PURCHASING PERMITS

A Black Hills Motorized Trail Permit is required to access the South Dakota portion of the motorized trail system and when riding an unlicensed OHV on a forest road designated “open to all vehicles.” Permits are available as a sevenday consecutive pass ($20) or an annual pass ($25). Prices are subject to change. Purchase permits from local vendors, Black Hills National Forest Service offices or the Black Hills Visitor Information Center off I-90, Exit 61 in Rapid City. The visitor center is open seven days a week, year-round, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Permits are also available to purchase online at BlackHillsBadlands.com/BHVIC. Please note that a separate permit is required when operating an OHV in Wyoming. There is no reciprocity for out-of-state registrations.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS FOR RESIDENTS AND OUT-OF-STATE VISITORS

OHVs must be registered and licensed to be used on public highways and some forest service roads. If you live in a state where ATVs/UTVs cannot be licensed for road use or your vehicle is not licensed for road use, you must contact a SD county treasurer’s office to obtain a special ATV/UTV road travel permit. If you have questions, call the SD Department of Motor Vehicles at 605-773-3541.

WHERE TO PLACE PERMITS

Permits need to be affixed in the proper locations and visible to oncoming vehicles to be valid.

ATVS/UTVS

Place the permit on the front left external wheel panel.

MOTORCYCLES

Affix the permit on the front center fork or the top of the fender.

VEHICLES WITH WINDSHIELDS
