Editor’s note

A

year has come to an end, as June marks our first anniversary of EQluxe. What a ride it has been (pun intended). When we embarked on this adventure a year ago we had no idea what was in store for us. We had always remained as an online platform and printing was a brave (perhaps insane) choice for certain but we were determined. We were blessed with a fabulous cover with a movie star, the always supportive Selma Blair, who coined our issue as “Maiden” and off we went! We know the horse-world was somewhat hesitant yet we hoped in the least they were curious to see what we could come up with that would separate us from other publications. Suffice to say, we had a plan and it was doing what we loved and using our experience in fashion and horses to present to our readers another option in an equestrian publication. I would like to believe that we have taken steps to getting closer to our original mission statement. I’m hopeful. So there you have it. Our second Summer Issue. Adoringly referred to as our Showstopper Issue. Truth be told, it was quite a task. (laughs) We wanted to do something unexpected and feature equestrians who were also influencers. Whether they were on TV, in a show ring, on a polo field, curating content, designing products, or visiting beautiful stables, we wanted to bring our favorites together and celebrate them. We are so thankful for the overwhelming support we have received in our first year and want to say thank you to everyone. Let’s just say, it was a lofty endeavor. Wrangling has never been one of my strong suits but with all of the schedules colliding it was a roundup for sure. (Maybe that was a bit snarky) Special thank you to our lovely cover girl Teddi Mellencamp. She was a trooper to say the least and as the results will show a pro through and through. Thanks again for joining the ride…here’s to another year!

A big thanks to everyone! Shelli Wright & Christopher Bredesen Editors | Co-founders

compiled by EQluxe Without knowing the Chanel S/S 2019 show would be close to one of his last. Karl Lagerfeld invited Chanel’s global audience to an uplifting day at the beach. Definitely an illusion of grandeur in the Grand Palais and yet the show delivered relatable fashion on carefree gals who blissfully displayed who we may want to be when summer hit! I mean, who wouldn’t want to be a carefree French girl? Thank you Karl for always allowing us to fantasize. You will be forever missed.

Written by Shelli Wright I’ll just preface this by saying, I love to support local talent. Whether that be a person, place or equestrian manufacturer. I came across Majyk Equipe through their IG account and found their devotion to manufacturing products without the use of neoprene interesting. I had to reach out. I was interested in discovering more about this California based company and how it came to be. I was immensely pleased after speaking with their co-owner Beverly and we started some reviews in motion. I was an instant fan. I love my Ergonomics Impact pad and I was happy to further our relationship to anything Beverly suggested. Naturally, when she suggested a IG shoot with equestrian influencers Zoey Luna and Yulia Bratkovskaya I was in and as a result a friendship and support from our camp was forged. Here’s their story.

The year being 2012.

Michael and Beverly Sirjani were living in Southern California. The couple had met while working as executives for some of the biggest sporting goods brands in the world. Now with a family in tow, they were enjoying a typical outdoor lifestyle while juggling fast paced work schedules. The pair, who had both grown up riding horses before their busy careers, had found themselves drawn once again to their childhood passion. Most weekends were spent riding and jumping at a local training facility where they often ran into the Kardashians and other famous faces out for a ride. One morning after a jumping lesson, as Michael disposed of yet another pair of cheaply made horse boots, he started to wonder why he couldn’t find the same sort of technology and design elements he had known and loved during his years manufacturing sporting goods for humans. Realizing he could apply the same core principles used in top brand sports shoe manufacturing to an equine line of products, Michael joined forces with a veterinarian team and together they came up with a plan on what was crucial to consider in a line of horse protective wear. While Michael worked on concepts with his newly assembled design team, Beverly set about contacting everyone they knew to see how they could get the materials to meet their high standards. At that point, the couple decided that perhaps it was time to name the new company they had started. They chose to name it after their mare, Majyk Motion, and to give a nod to their sports background, they added the term ‘Equipe.’ Thus ‘Majyk Equipe’ became the name attached to everything they made. As a result of their long-standing relationships in the sporting goods industry, the company was able to gain access to the highest grade materials available – materials usually only accessible to the billion dollar brands they had previously worked for. With a strong belief in what they had created, they set about making sure everyone was hearing about this very different line. After the initial boots were unveiled, trainers started commenting on how they had never seen boots with such defined structure and technology and quickly

understood how unique these boots were compared to what was already available. As they considered ways to get the word out, they decided to send some boots to athletes around the country hoping that someone might see and like them. One day the phone rang and a young female voice told them that she had seen their designs, really liked them and was interested in getting some for her boss to try. That voice belonged to a young groom and her boss turned out to be none other than two times Olympian and World Famous eventer, Boyd Martin. After testing them, Boyd was so impressed that he asked if he could partner with the brand to create more products. Soon the phone was ringing with other world class riders all asking if they could get some for their horses. Trainers, riders and stores also started contacting the company for details and soon Majyk boots were appearing on the legs of top-rated horses at every major event around the country. Majyk riders kept winning and the ‘#Believe in Majyk’ message was popping up everywhere. The company continued to double in size every year, picking up awards along the way including ‘Best in Test’ Horse and Rider brand for 2017. Since then, the line has expanded to include a full range of boots, pads and girths with more items planned through 2019 and 2020. Majyk is still fortunate to have long standing partnerships with the most prestigious manufacturers in the world. This allows them to stay at the forefront of material development and gain access to the newest technologies not usually available. Unlike some equine companies who buy ready-made generic designs from factories and simply add their brand name, Majyk only makes unique products. This allows them to cut out the middleman and offer a superior line at much lower prices than other comparable products. It also means, that as true equestrians, they understand every element of what goes into each item they sell. The company also prides itself on using eco- friendly, anti-bacterial materials (You will never find Neoprene in their products!) Now Majyk is adding more uniquely designed items to its line. A brand-new line of Technical Saddle Pads will launch today with Girths coming in April/ May 2018. “This line of products took over a year to bring to market.” Says Sirjani. “For other companies the process can be a little easier if they buying ‘off the shelf’ items from mass producers. We only offer unique styles that have been designed and engineered by us. You won’t find a Majyk style with someone else’s brand name – we never sell a clone item.” The Pads and Girths will be front and center at this year’s Land Rover Kentucky Three Day Event. Last year Majyk had the largest number of horses out in the field in their boots at these horse trials making it the #1 choice – this year expect to see pads and girths alongside the boots. “We realize what an honor it is for the top riders in the world to choose our products.” Says Sirjani. “As a newer company, all we have to stand on are our products. We’ve been amazed to see how well the line has done – our sales have grown and grown with so many Majyk fans seeking out our whole line where it is represented alongside other, older brands.” Majyk’s new technical saddle pads check all the same boxes as their hugely successful boots. Made with proprietary designs and technology, the pads allow for multiple shim options, offer wither and spine relief, moisture wicking, stay cool fabrics and nonslip backing. The approach that Majyk takes to horse protection is always a little different. With a background in making

human athletic wear for some of the biggest companies both in the US and the world, Majyk’s in house design team is able to utilize its longstanding partnerships to gain access to new materials and technologies usually only reserved for human athletes. “It’s time to bring the Equestrian World into the 21st Century” says SIrjani. “We never use neoprene in any of our products and only choose the latest fabrics and materials that have been proven to benefit athletic performance. The same properties are even more important for horses, where excessive heat buildup and blunt trauma can cause damage to a horse.” The original inspiration for the line, their beloved Dutch warmblood mare, Majyk Motion (Magic Motion) passed away in 2014 after a battle with cancer leaving a huge void to fill. On Royal Wedding Day 2018, Majyk’s Grand Daughter, Royal Majyk (aka Duchess) came into the world carrying excellent blood lines while also carrying on the Majyk legacy. She will be one to watch in the future! Today, the products are sold on four continents. Majyk Equipe has been a longtime dream realized. With a combined love of horses, design and technology, this West Coast company has managed to change the game and raise the level of horse protection standards. Born in a place world famous for its sporting innovations, this California brand continues to inspire horse lovers around the world with a very twenty-first century approach to a very traditional sport.

So the name may sound familiar, and you may be right in connecting the relation. However, being real has never been a problem for Equestrian Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave. Her tenacity and spark has set her apart as not only a soaring entrepreneur and an accountability coach but she has managed to win everyone over one episode at a time on Bravo’s hit television show, “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”. We caught up with Teddi at one of the beautiful Balmoral Farm training facilities in Malibu at which she rides at to ask her about her life as a mother, Bravo tv star, athletic guru and her equestrian life past and future. | S19 35

Q+A |Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave As if introductions were needed, tell a little bit about yourself. I’m Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave— you might know me from the Bravo series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. I also run all in by Teddi, my health and fitness accountability coaching business and former nationally ranked professional equestrian. And most importantly I’m a mom to our kids Slate, Cruz and Bella with my husband, Edwin.

How did you end up on the Real Housewives? Was being in the entertainment industry something you always wanted to do? Yep, when I was younger I wanted to be an actress, but I had a bad experience after an audition where casting made comments on my appearance and decided that was it for me. Housewives came calling after I had met one of the other women, and I ultimately decided to just go for it. What prompted you to start your inspiring ALL IN? Tell us more about how you became an accountability coach? There were a few things, but a major turning point I’ll never forget was when I had taken the kiddos to a play group and we took a photo. I instantly started to photoshop my body to the point I was distorting my childrens’ faces. I knew then and there that I had to make a real-life change; something photoshop couldn’t fix. And so I started an Instagram account to hold myself accountable to a healthy lifestyle, which began inspiring others. It grew from there. As equestrians, where form especially in Hunters is so prominent, what would be your suggestion in remaining positive when maybe we don’t have that perfectly long lean body stereotype? Take pride in yourself and your work. You have to tell those negative voices that you got this. As long as you are eating quality foods that nourish your body and are taking care of yourself, that’s what is important. Not what size breeches you are wearing.

Now let’s get into the Horsey stuff! When did you decide to take up Horseback riding? Was it something you were always interested in as a little girl or was this something that you explored later in life? I started riding when I was four years old. Our nextdoor neighbor in Indiana was a horse trainer and had ponies in her yard— from then on I was hooked! What discipline of riding did you choose at first? Are you still pursuing this and why? I did English. Professionally, I rode in the Hunters. Where do you train? I train at Balmoral Farm with Carleton and Traci Brooks.

Love Binetti jacket $350 Pinko turtleneck $154 Wayf pants $108

| S19 36

How often do you train? It depends on how crazy my work schedule is – sometimes twice a week, sometimes once a month, or when I’m taking my kids there for lessons.

Do you compete? Before I had kids, when I rode professionally, I rode six days a week and traveled for shows almost every week. Since having kids and getting my amateur status, how much I ride changes. I compete only occasionally now. Will you be showing again? Yes, of course! I just don’t like to go to shows without practicing. So when I have more time to practice, I’ll show again. Preferred saddle? Butet

Preferred helmet? Charles Owen

Ok, so getting back to the show, everyone loves you…the fans love you. Perhaps you could help us in our daily lives as well….Can you share with our readers your secret to navigating the Drama and remaining Real? You just have to remember to be true to yourself and not worry about what other people will think of you. If I’m being myself, then at the end of the day I have nothing to regret.

What’s next for Teddi? Continuing to grow the ALL IN empire – when I started my business it was just me, but now, I have over 40 coaches. I’ve created an Athleisure line with more products on the way, I have a journal coming out, we’re going on All IN retreats— it’s all so exciting and everything I envisioned when starting out. As long as I can continue showing others how to create a healthy lifestyle and make themselves a priority, I’m good.

I spend my days fully-immersed in this fashion-heavy, design-covered, creativity-overloaded badass equestrian fantasy world. Don’t get me wrong - its not always ponies, art, florals and exceptional shoes. Somedays it really truly is no make-up, manure stains on my breeches, the nastiest case of helmet head, feisty employees, construction problems, and screaming children. But for the most part it is carefully-curated, controlled-chaos and you can bet its done with a smile. There’s a lot that makes my world go round these days - from business apps to must-have leather totes to some ‘treat-yo-self’ extras. Here is what’s currently making my horse babe heart skip a beat this summer.

“I anxiously awaited the launch of this scent from Hermes several years ago, knowing I would be absolutely captivated by the combination of feminine rose and masculine, textural leather. I took one sniff and then declared to the Hermes store employee that I had just discovered my “forever signature scent!” They didn’t share my same level of excitement, but happily sold me the bottle and sent me on my way. I’ve worn it everyday ever since.”

ZOEY LUNA, known to her fans as @zlequestrian has made a name for herself in the equestrian forums as a knowledgeable and established source for training tips and rehab DIY for eager OTTB owners and horse rescue advocates. After catching up with Zoey at her training facility at Willow Creek Farms we had a chance to hangout and find out more about the blonde vixen that has captured so many hearts in the Instagram equestrian world..

Zoey started her riding career over 10 years ago in Santa Barbara CA. With numerous wins in hunters, medals and jumpers, she has proven herself an accomplished rider and trainer. Originally, her popular instagram was founded as a platform to showcase her retraining and sales of off the track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs) and now the premise has expanded to all breeds, but always keeping with the same basic ZL principle: a solid foundation and results that last. One could say her love for training has evolved into a brand as well as, and we’re not sure there are many in the EQ IG world that have not heard of ZL equestrian. But the one thing we are sure of, is that they’ve never seen her like this before. Enjoy!

fter working in conjunction with several national aftercare agencies we thought we should probably bring awareness to an aftercare association that’s right in our back yards. CARMA is a placement accreditation program based out of Santa Anita Park and works with aftercare charities within California that retrain, rehome and retire thoroughbred racehorses. We caught up with CARMA to find out more about the intricate workings of their non-profit and how as interested parties we can participate.

Q+ A Tell us briefly how CARMA came to be and where are you located? CARMA was launched in 2008 by owner-breeder Madeline Auerbach to address the need for funding for retired racehorses. Working with various industry stakeholders, such as owners, breeders, and trainers, and the California Horse Racing Board we were able to implement a voluntary .03% donation of owners’ purses paid through the Paymaster Office. Based at Santa Anita Park, CARMA works with racetracks and

| S18 58

stakeholders throughout the state.

More than just a grant program, CARMA also helps in approving aftercare organizations to help in the rehoming or rehabbing of these athletes. How many organizations in California has CARMA accredited? CARMA’s Annual Grant Process is an important part of our mission. We regularly work with 20-25 Aftercare Charities that retrain, rehome and retire Thoroughbred Racehorses. While we do not have an official accreditation process, our grant application is extensive and we were the first Thoroughbred funding charity to actually go out and physically visit and inspect each facility applying for a grant. This “site visit” process has since been implemented by other notable granting organizations, such as the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA).

What criteria does an organization or facility have to meet to become approved? As I said, our grant application is extensive. We ask for information on all the facets of an organization including; business operations, financial statements and tax returns, facility descriptions/photos, adoption contracts/agreements, individual race records for qualifying horses, volunteer documentation, and much more.

love How many horses does CARMA usually have in it’s placement program? CARMA averages 25 horses per month in our Placement Program.

Where do the horses come from? Horses for the Placement Program come from the Thoroughbred Racetracks in California – Santa Anita Park,

“The fact is Thoroughbreds make excellent riding horses and are versatile enough to do just about any sport.” Golden Gate Fields, Del Mar, CARF and Los Alamitos.

Do you have follow up procedures once a horse is placed in it’s new home? Yes – once they are placed with an Aftercare Charity, we get regular updates every three, six, nine and 12 months. After the first year the updates come in a couple times a year. Social media plays an important role in the way we are updated, as many of our horses end up in the show ring so we get pictures and posts that way.

One thing we found interesting was the extra mile, no pun intended that CARMA takes in creating awareness in the rehabilitation of retired race horses by hosting events and honoring past participants and graduates. Tell about some of the events our readers can look forward to. CARMA regularly hosts Aftercare Awareness Days at Santa Anita Park, where we showcase off-track Thoroughbreds second careers as performance and sport horses. Demonstrations include jumping, barrel racing and dressage performed on the main track between live races. Dates for all our upcoming events can be found on our website at www. carma4horses.org/events To broaden awareness, what can you suggest to equestrians who find interest in supporting or owning one of these retired off the track Thoroughbreds? Anyone interested in owning an off-track Thoroughbred can look on our website for a list of CARMA Grant Recipients (www.carma4horses.org/aftercare_organiations) . Many of these organizations have horses available for adoption. The fact is Thoroughbreds make excellent riding horses and are versatile enough to do just about any sport. One of our Placement Program graduates originally went to a cattle ranch and was cutting cows before beginning training as a Grand Prix jumping prospect. Truly Thoroughbreds can do anything! How does someone volunteer or help CARMA? We love volunteers! Anyone interested in helping CARMA can send an email to us via our website. We regularly have volunteers at our on-track events and our Thoroughbred Classic Horse Show, so help is always appreciated.

I started riding

when I was 4 maybe 5 it’s difficult to remember. However, I do remember the giant retired racehorse I had my first english lesson on. I was 6 and she was a calm pokey bay mare named Maggie. Maggie was gentle, stubborn at times and had about as much go in her as I needed, but boy did my little legs hurt from kicking. Maggie would be the first of many Off the Track Thoroughbreds that would enrich my equestrian life. In fact, I have one right now which is why I feel so strongly about bringing awareness to the aftercare opportunities available. There seems to be a misconception surrounding the idea of riding an ex-racehorse. In actuality, to be an OTTB you only need to be registered with the jockey club and not all horses registered have actually raced. In fact my first children’s hunter was an off the track but never had any starts out of the gate. She was a small little 15’2 hand chestnut who had a jump on her that took us through many years of showing. It seems strange to think that she may have been taken down another unfortunate path somewhere not suitable for her talents. The truth being, many thoroughbreds go on to be amazing hunters, jumpers, dressage horses, polo ponies, western pleasure horses and great pets. Thus the importance of aftercare. There are several organizations that care for, retrain and place these horses in safe homes where they are given the opportunity to live respectable lives. The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is an agency that helps approve and regulate participating aftercares and accredit new ones. We were very fortunate to discuss with TAA their purpose and what they do.

When we pulled in to the circular drive

at the entrance to Gleneagles, I really thought I'd look down and find myself in a Downton Abbey type dress and stepping out of a Model T type car - entering the drive was like crossing an invisible line in time and stepping back into a the world of early 19th century luxury. I had come for the express purpose of immersing myself in the Mark Phillips designed equestrian centre and all the varied options offered, my husband had come to tee off at the 3 onsite courses and try his luck at the lottery of garnering a tee time at nearby St. Andrews (for their Old Course).

globetrot

The white gloved doorman quickly opened my door, assured my husband that our bags would be deftly delivered from the boot to our room and invited us to enter the hotel. Our days and nights were the perfect holiday at this “glorious playground”, a mix of our favorite hobbies, the chance to improve and try new pursuits. I was able to practice my cross country jumping with the expertise of the British Horse Society trainers who guided me deftly with, sometimes minor technique changes, and in other cases larger modifications to my form that made handling the combination of obstacles (and helping my horse) so much easier. And while my initial goal for the week was to passionately pursue my cross country work, I couldn’t help but allocate a few lessons to try my hand (and legs) at both a polo lesson as well as carriage driving, of which once I took my first “drive” on one of the hedge and tree lined carriage paths had me hooked - I was truly a “Lady” out for a nice afternoon drive in my gig. Afternoon tea became our daily meeting point after my morning equestrian break and his round of golf (his favorite turned out to be The Queen’s course, though it did seem it was a bit of a love/hate relationship. All three courses were intrepid and exquisite, he said. Yet he found himself fascinated and mesmerized by the variety and diversity of the natural construction of this one in particular.)

| S19 66

Both of us being avid outdoors people, we expressly made it a point to enjoy the other pursuits available - truly an amusement park for all manner of adult delights: • My Harris hawk Enya was the perfect ambassador for an afternoon “hunt” on foot. And while it seemed to me she glared reproachfully down her nose at me in the training yard, once out on the paths, she and the others flushed prey with skillful accuracy. • Canines Luke and Oban showed us the brilliance of lessons at the gundog school with their prowess at pheasant flushing, agility and duck retrieval amongst water obstacles. • While we both enjoy sporting clays at our local club at home, it was too tempting not to try them here, at a place where the “London season” was traditionally followed by grouse shooting here. And my husband, a hunter, took advantage of the deer stalking in the hills. His animated description of the experience, terrain and techniques had me wishing I’d tagged along. • The off road driving package was a true highlight for me - a steadfast test of trust in your skills, faith in your vehicle and a grown up chance to “play” over open and varied terrain - I LOVED it! We did not have the opportunity to enjoy the fishing (we both love to fly fish) as we didn’t want to miss the chance to sample a whiskey flight, meander through the boutique shops and enjoy a spot of croquet on the lawn. Dinner in the Michelin rated Andrew Fairlie restaurant was our “special” evening, and it did not disappoint. Each course was unique in its variety, the subtle nuances of flavor that tickled your senses, sometimes latently and the sense that each part of the meal was prepared expressly for our enjoyment and culinary delight. This grand estate gave us an opulent week of respite from buzzing phones, pinging emails and traffic laden commutes while showing us that we didn’t have to be born 100 years ago to still enjoy a grand way of life. Gleneagles bewitched us, and we will return.

barn envy

In 2016, Vertical Arts Architecture completed this private horse property. The equestrian complex consists of four buildings – the barn, indoor riding arena, bunkhouse, plus additional hay and bedding storage space. The Vertical Arts team used structural steel and maintenance-free materials on the barn; the owners did not want a typical wooden barn. The color palette and roofing is cohesive with the owner’s home nearby.

The barn

features wash and grooming stalls, hay and bedding stall, tack room, plus a locker room for employees complete with a washer and dryer. Vertical Arts focused on designing a functional space to ensure optimal ventilation and cleanliness, ensuring a healthy environment for the horses. The courtyard style facility protects the animals from wind and winter elements, it was also inspired by the owner’s Moroccan heritage. Large garage doors were installed in the barn to allow plenty of ventilation on warm summer days. The installation of an automatic cleaning system for the stalls makes the barn easy to maintain. Feeding is a breeze with built-in water troughs and feeding cubbies. Additionally, Vertical Arts included a specialized three-step composting system with an aeration mat near the barn. The 8-stall barn features Classic Equine stall kits. The fencing in the outdoor runs and indoor arena is by Classic Equine. The fountain also doubles as a drinking trough for the horses.

The Indoor Arena The barn is connected to a staging area and heated indoor arena by a drivable breezeway, allowing the horses to stay indoors. Vertical Arts used Kalwall translucent panels on the top story of the riding arena and barn to allow light in while reducing shadows, glares and bright spots that can spook horses. The lounge, viewing area and office are attached to the indoor arena. Inside there is a kitchen, bathroom and fireplace. One of the challenges for designing and building this project was the land itself. After some analysis, there were only three to four flat areas large enough for the equestrian buildings. The Vertical Arts team was able to overcome the land’s challenging sloped site by situating the large indoor arena close to a hill, allowing the surrounding land to be graded and flattened for easy accessibility by large vehicles and horse trailers.

Bulgari Resort BALI

Written by Maddy Pasqualini

Summer is coming and I can already feel the stable grit and grime sticking

to my sweaty skin. Don’t get me wrong, I love a quiet early evening summer ride, but I think we can all agree that summer at the stable leaves a little something to be desired in the way of feeling refreshed. I made it my mission for this summer issue to find all of you (and myself), the most refreshing, luxurious, exotic, opposite of the barn getaway possible, and I think I have done just that. May I introduce to you, the incomparable Bulgari Resort in Bali...

Its imposing arrival pavilion, with its magnificent proportions and masterful design welcomes guests to to a private and glamorous stay in Bali. The breathtaking natural beauty of this secluded setting blends perfectly with its exquisite design and complete luxury experience. Bulgari opened its all villa property in Bali in September 2006. The resort is comprised of 58 villas with ocean views, 5 mansions offering 3 to 5 bedroom accommodations, and the remarkable 1300 square meter Bulgari Villa. All accommodations offer a plunge pool and patio with secluded tropical gardens, high technology features, and an extensive range of amenities. The resort also boasts sophisticated facilities, such as the Italian and Indonesian restaurants, the lounge bar, the Spa, and the cliff-edge pool. The resort is located on the Bukit peninsula which is home to some of Bali’s most exclusive villas and resorts, as well as one of the island’s holiest temples and some of the world’s finest surfing locations. The area resembles the coastal regions of the Mediterranean far more than the verdant topical landscape of inland Bali. Uniquely positioned at more than 150 meters above the shore, the resort offers unrivaled views across the Indian Ocean. Nestled between the cliff and the ocean is a stunning 1.5 kilometer long beach that is accessible only through the resort. The resort is located near the village of Pecatu and the stunning clifftop site of the Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple, on the island’s far southwestern tip. The Jimbaran Bay as well as the international airport lie approximately 20 kilometers north of the resort while Kuta, the touristy heart of Bali, is a 40 minute drive.

Accomodations

Designed by architects Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel and Partners the resort uses traditional Balinese style with dramatic contemporary Italian design to create a uniquely styled space that distinguished Bulgari properties from the rest. The hotel has been built and furnished using hand-cut volcanic stones, rich exotic woods, and refined fabrics. Natural lava and palimanan stone are used for the garden and interior walls, refined bangkiray hardwood in the villas, natural green-colored sukabumi stone to clad outdoor showers, plunge and swimming pools. A collection of exquisite Balinese antiques and exotic art pieces adorn the entire resort. Furniture and decorative details, such as stemware, flatware, ceramics, and woven fabrics were designed and produced in Bali by a team of local artists and designers in collaboration with the resort’s architects. Around every incredible guest room, there is a private garden, pool, open air living room, and a 300 square meter area overlooking thatched roofs and the Indian Ocean. The villas are designed to ensure maximum privacy to guests, creating a quiet and secret atmosphere perfect for guests looking to get away from the stresses of the outside world. All villas include two equally large spaces, one for the bedroom, and the other for the bathroom. The bathrooms feature a bathtub and two showers, one inside, and one outside in the garden. The open-air living room, between the private garden and the small swimming pool, is located southwards opening to the cliffs and the sea. In the westernmost part of the resort stands the 1300 square meter Bulgari Villa, featuring three bedrooms, two living rooms, and a kitchen. Its remarkable garden hosts a 17 meter long swimming pool surrounded by an extensive terrace.

Welcome to Summer, a show season that sometimes seems endless whether

you’re showing hunter/jumpers, saddleseat, western or dressage. The rigorous scheduling and travel leaves most equestrians little time to slip out on those off days and for those who are supporting we all know you sometimes just need to get away from the show grounds. Welcome to “Sip Away” our new feature designed to present ‘other’ options nearby for some much needed R&R. First stop: Sonoma

escape

Eight years ago as part of a Christmas gift experience, my son Sam and I had an epic wine tasting adventure. We sampled our way through Sonoma Valley discovering new places, people and wine preferences. I remember stopping at Cline Cellars Vineyard for a picnic lunch followed by tastings. We were greeted and invited to enjoy all of the amenities as well as the wines. It was such a fun place to be that we actually had to convince ourselves to leave and continue on with our Sonoma quest. When my friends at Eqluxe reached out and suggested I write a little Sonoma tasting excursion I was delighted to share my “find” with their readers and my husband. Cline Cellars did not disappoint this time around either! Once again we were warmly greeted and invited to share an unforgettable experience. Nancy and Fred Cline own both the the Cline Cellars Winery and across the street the Jacuzzi Family Vineyards. The Cline Cellars property was once a horse ranch and riding stable. When Nancy was a young girl, she used to ride there and dreamed of someday owning a horse ranch. Years later when the ranch was put up for sale, she and her husband purchased the property and turned it into the vineyards and winery it is today. There’s even a statue of a horse at the entrance! Across the street is their other property, Jacuzzi Family Vineyards winery which, is stunningly modeled after the Jacuzzi family home in Northern Italy, a homage to Fred’s Italian ancestry. The Cline Cellars Vineyard, our first stop, is zzzframed with blooming roses adjacent to old adobe buildings, picnic tables under towering eucalyptus trees, an old white farmhouse/tasting room, duck and fish ponds, expansive groomed lawns, a renowned museum of California missions and an active wine making operation. There are multiple wine tasting areas at Cline, with one reserved for wine club members. The Farmhouse tasting room and the tasting bar next to the duck pond are open to the public. Five tastes from a menu of 26 choices is only $10 per person plus tax. However, that tasting fee is waived with wine purchase (per person). Wines range from $14 a bottle for 2017 Syrah to $65 a bottle for a Cline Reserve 2015 Furvus Rosso. The Reserve collection is made in Amphorae, terra-cotta clay vessels, dating back to ancient times when original containers were used by the Greeks and Romans to age and store wine. I’ve been to many wineries over the years and have learned about the barrels, french oak, white oak, stainless steel, etc., but clay vessels were a first for me. A private tasting had been reserved and set up for us on the members only

tasting patio overlooking the pond. We started with “bubbles” actually my favorite choice of beverage. Our wine guide served us a 2017 Nancy’s Cuvee - Sonoma Coast. According to the wine list “This sparkling wine has lovely aromas of toasted bread that tease the nose and are followed by crisp, bright flavors of melon and green apple. A blend of Chardonnay (76%) and Pinot Noir (24%).” Delicious and then we moved on to two chilled white wines, a 2017 Farmhouse White blend of Palomino, Muscat Canelli and Roussanne and a 2018 White Cashmere blend of intermingling Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Muscat Canelli and Viognier. I enjoyed both and was pleasantly surprised to learn of the charitable mission attached to the Cashmere labels that benefit breast cancer and Alzheimer’s research efforts. We tested the 2017 Cashmere Rose, 2017 Cashmere Red and my favorite, the 2016 Cashmere Black, which were all so good and worthy of purchase! In addition to the Cashmere labels, we were treated to a 2017 Farmhouse Red, a bright and full bodied blend of Zinfandel and Syrah. We then tasted Single Vineyard wines from Contra Costa County, a robust 2016 Big Break Zinfandel and the 2015 Heritage Zinfandel which was wine with big and flavorful notes of chocolate, sweet berries, spice and coffee. We concluded our tasting with a square of dark chocolate and a tasting of the 2016 Late Harvest Mourvedre, the perfect dessert wine with flavors of berry and dark chocolate. We toured the grounds and were impressed by the California Missions Museum on site which showcases one of a kind, handcrafted models of all 21 California missions made for the 1939 World’s Fair. The Clines saved the models from being individually auctioned off in 1998 and created the museum in 2005 to feature these historical works of art, designed to scale by German cabinet makers under the direction of Italian artist Leon Bayard de Volo. In addition to the models, the museum showcases two stained-glass panels which were housed in the Mission Dolores that survived the 1906 earthquake and paintings by local artists Robert Morris and Henry Nelson. Admission to the museum is free.

Across the street from Cline Cellars was our second destination. The Jacuzzi Family winery is beautiful with Murano glass chandeliers, commissioned artwork, hand painted tiles, fountain, Italian stonework, arched windows, handcrafted wooden bars and beams. The Olive Press tasting room and operations is across the hall from the wine tasting room. An open Grand Piazza in the center of the villa lends itself to conversation, wine tasting and casual strolling. Acres of vineyards surround the Italian villa-inspired building. Our wine tasting experience began with more bubbles - Pina Prosecco Docg from Asolo, Italy. Five tastes from a menu of 24 choices is only $10 per person plus tax. However, that tasting fee is waived with wine purchase (per person). Wines range from $20 a bottle for a 2016 Bianco di Sei Sorelle to $40 a bottle for a 2016 Valeriano - Estate Carneros. After the bubbles, we tried three whites: a white wine with “notes of peach, ripe apple, and a touch of citrus and almond” from the Vernaccia grape 2017 Gilia; the 2018 Arneis from Sonoma County had “refreshing flavors of citrus, mineral, tropical fruits, melon with bright acidity and a clean vibrant finish”; and a 2017 Rosato Di Primitivo with “flavors of citrus, strawberry and watermelon.” In addition to their white wine collection, Jacuzzi has a lighter red wine collection, a bolder red wine collection and a sweet wine collection all available for tasting. We enjoyed the 2017 Sangiovese from the Sonoma Coast which was Best of Class in the West Coast Wine Competition with Gold Medal 93 points.

escape We experienced the flavors of blackberry, coffee and figs in the 2014 Aglianico and the berries and cherries in the 2016 Montepulciano. We enjoyed a bold wine from Lodi terroir, the 2017 Teroldego, which had intense dark fruit aromas. After tastings it was time to head over to the olive pressing operations area where we tasted olive oils and balsamic vinegars. The Olive Press is the most highly awarded olive oil producer in the nation and is internationally recognized as the best in the U.S. Two 95 year old olive trees flank an ancient granite olive oil mill in front of Jacuzzi. It takes 1000 pounds of olives to produce 15 gallons of olive oil, whereas 1000 pounds of grapes produce 60 gallons of wine. Our wine tasting adventure was relaxing, informative and truly enjoyable. This is a great stop over from the Sonoma Horse Park! If you’re showing on Saturday, stop by on Sunday! In the spirit of full disclosure, my husband and I purchased a half case of wine at Cline Cellars and a half case of wine at Jacuzzi Winery as well as a bottle of exquisite olive oil and a bottle of coconut balsamic vinegar from The Olive Press. Just a little bit of Sonoma to take on home!

Come with us to the beach as our resident foodie couple

Chef Christopher Turke and Restraunteur Jan Peterson show us how to make an amazing paella that will have your barn buddies not only raving about but craving every time they see a campfire.

F

or those of you who have not had the opportunity to enjoy both cooking and eating Paella it’s time for a change or as we like to say “an awakening”. Paella is a Spanish dish usually prepared for larger groups and made of rice, saffron, Spanish (not Mexican) Chorizo, smoked paprika, chicken, seafood and anything fresh and available in your region of the world. Paella was originally the Valencian poor mans meal and was made from any ingredient in season. In the coastal regions it would be seafood, in the mountains it would be rabbit but always with the basic ingredient of rice which is one of Valencia’s staple crops. Because this dish is so versatile and flexible you can easily make it vegetarian by simply adding any fresh and local produce and using vegetable stock instead of a chicken, fish, or shellfish stock. For best results we strongly suggest you purchase a Paella Pan. Paella pans, sometimes-called paellera’s are made especially for the job. They are round, open metal pans, which are approximately 2-2.5 inches deep. These pans spread the heat and withstand cooking over hot coals. Paella pans can be made of carbon steel, stainless steel or enamel and have two handles which allows you to transport it from the fire to the table and serve. The material, shape and shallow depth of the pans are what make them perfect for cooking rice, which is the focus of the paella. For Larger Groups use an 18-inch paella pan which makes up to 12 servings, or go bigger with a 24 inch pan which makes up to 19 servings. You can also reduce the serving size by half when using a paella pan without negatively affecting the quality of the paella. There are literally hundreds of ways to cook paella and every cook has their own favorite recipe. Here’s our basic recipe, but again the ingredients change from season to season-based on availability of fresh local ingredients. (Our recipe will serve 12 people depending on how hungry you are). Jan and I enjoy cooking this dish outside over an open fire because the shape of the paella pan creates a vortex and draws the wood smoke back down to the surface of the ingredients creating a wonderful smoke flavor. We use a stainless steel rack (like the one on your BBQ at home) that we evenly balance on river rocks that we place around our bon fire pit. Be sure to have plenty of small pieces of wood already handy before starting this dish. Half of the fun is collecting and gathering all your mis en plas you need for this dish right down to the wood.

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS

When your fire is right (on the downside of a heavy flame just as the coals/wood are totally hot and glowing,) place your pan in the middle of a bridge made with the rocks. The pan should be about 6-8 inches over the flame. You will need to bring with you a large pot that you will use to heat your stock. Place the pot with your stock in it on the grill to heat up before you start the whole cooking process. In the paella pan add about 3 tablespoons of olive oil (good time to check that your rack is stable and level), let the oil get hot, add your chicken skin side down, and fry until nicely browned on both sides, about 10 minutes. Remove the chicken, add the Spanish dried chorizo, saffron, onions and garlic, sauté for 2 minutes, then add the tomatoes red and green peppers, smoked paprika and some salt and black pepper, add one more drizzle of olive oil and then add your rice. Toast ingredients for about 2 minutes then add your wine and reduce. Now you can slowly add the HOT stock. Stir in the stock one ladle at a time SLOWLY until it is about ¾ gone. Arrange the chicken thighs back into the pan. DO NOT STIR THE RICE ANY MORE AFTER THIS STEP. It is important to control the fire, just an even heat with no or very little flame to allow the rice to cook through. 10 minutes later add the shrimp, and arrange nicely. Then 3 minutes later add the mussels and clams and cook for another 5 minutes, or until they open. Finally add the peas or green beans. Cook for another 5 minutes then taste the rice to see if (A) it is done mainly the chicken (B) it is seasoned properly, and (C) the rice does not need more stock. When the rice is done it will have a slight burn underneath, this is called “socorat” and is considered the best part of the dish. Take it off the flame and allow to cool for 5 or 10 mins (If the rice hasn’t cooked completely then cover it with newspaper and add a little water on top, this allows the top rice to cook through without adding more liquid to the already cooked rice underneath). Then finish with the fresh parsley.

Nothing says beach party like a few pitchers of Sangria. Sangria is a fruit-based wine “punch” with its traditional heritage well rooted in Spain. Typically, sangrias are made with red wine, fresh seasonal fruit and club soda or citrus flavored soda. It’s as easy to make as it is to drink, Enjoy.

INGREDIENTS (makes one pitcher) 1 1 1 2 1 2

Bottle of red wine lemon cut into wedges Orange cut into wedges Tbsp. sugar Shot brandy Cups ginger ale or club soda

PREPARATION:

Pour wine in a pitcher and squeeze the juice wedges from the lemon and orange into the wine. Toss in the fruit wedges, remember to remove the seeds, and add sugar and brandy. Chill overnight. Add ginger ale or club soda just before serving. Now all you need to do is remember the sunscreen and enjoy your party because once the cooking starts you will have more hands asking to help than you need.

PARTY

“You’re Basic!”

Brews

By Lila Joy Ginsburg As the weather warms up, there’s nothing like a nice cold one to beat the heat. Some of the best brews come from Europe, with 7,500 breweries even the pickiest drinker is sure to find a match. But this story isn’t about that. This is about the basic brews, for all you basic drinkers out there. The “Budweisers” of every country!

BELGIUM

Nothing beats a hot summer like a delicious Belgian Beer. From Stella and Chimay to names we can’t pronounce, Belgium reigns high in the beer world. Jupiler ranks highest among the most popular “basic” of the brews. It’s no Stella, but it gets the job done.

|S19106

GERMANY

Home of Oktoberfest, Germany is one of the top 5 beer-producing companies and the world, and their beer consumption resides in the top 3. There are over 1300 breweries in Germany, and over 250 million gallons are consumed annually, so needless to say, this is a country that knows beer! Two breweries have been neck and neck over the past couple of years, Oettinger and Krombacher. So get out your big steins and try each! It’s a beer celebration after all.

PARTY

NETHERLANDS

Amsterdam is a city full of green. And by green, I mean Heineken! Heineken is king in this country, there is no question about it! Visit the Heineken museum and learn the beer-making process, and how to properly pour a draught beer (hint: it’s all in the tilt). Proost!

BRITAIN

When the Brits pop into the pub for a pint, the most popular draught of choice is Carling. The Brits tend to favor lager over ales, so it’s no surprise they can be found cheering on their favorite football team with this Canadian pale lager in their hand.

FRANCE

In France, Kronenbourg 1664 is a name that can be heard to the same level as Budweiser is in America. Found at your local bistro or even grab a pint at the nearest McDonalds, you can find this deliciously satisfying Euro pale lager anywhere. So if you aren’t in the mood for wine, there is an ageold easy solution for you!

ITALY

In a land flowing with wine, the beer options may be few, but the quality is top notch! Peroni is the go to here, a delicious crisp pale lager that makes any hot day under the Tuscan sun slightly more bearable!

IRELAND

Well, you probably know what I’m going to say with this one. Ireland is the home to many delicious beers, but none of them loved as Guinness. And for those of you who have tried this delicious toasty stout, unless you have tried it in Ireland, you don’t know the true Guinness taste. If you’re unsure about this heavy beer, hop on over to the Gravity Bar at the Guinness Brewery in Dublin for a free sample, the sweeping view of Dublin from their 7th story window is worth the trip.
