LEARNING HOW TO LEARN
By Jackie Shelton

As a child, Hannah Santos ‘14 never thought she would go to college, as school was frustrating for her. She says she knew the answers to the questions being asked of her on her tests, but she couldn’t figure out how to communicate them, which led to many failing grades.
In the 7th grade, she learned she had problems processing information, and that knowledge allowed her family to get her an IEP (Individualized Education Program) so she could get the extra help she needed.
“It’s like you have all these files in your brain and they all come out at once,” she explains. “It can cause things to go backwards or like you’re experiencing dyslexia or just your brain is going too fast. For me, it made it hard to talk sometimes.” Though she has a long history of Bishop Manogue Miners in her family, the plan was for Santos to go to a public high school, one that could accommodate her learning disability. But then, in 2009, Bishop Manogue introduced its Integrated Learning Center (ILC), to provide resources for students with IEPs and 504 plans. Santos says she was happy to be a guinea pig for the new program.
A Strong Beginning
As a private high school, Bishop Manogue is not required to have an ILC, but the administration saw the need and put the resources toward being as accommodating as possible for all of their students.
—Hannah Santos
“Bishop Manogue is considered a college prep school and it didn’t always have a program to help students with diagnoses,” explains Tony Ghilieri, director of the Integrated Learning Center. “But we know it’s important for those students who want a Catholic school education and need accommodations.”
Since 2009, Bishop Manogue’s ILC program has helped students learn how to learn, working through challenges that include: ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder); specific learning disabilities in math and reading; anxiety disorders; dyslexia; communications disorders and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).
Ghilieri has been working with paraprofessionals Jami Hunt and Nate Tremaine for the last 10 years to identify students’ learning styles and disabilities to help them navigate school and life.
Santos says she learned how to learn and, as importantly, how to communicate what she had learned. “I was offered the ILC program in college, but I didn’t feel like I needed it,” she says. “That class prepared me for college more than anything else I did.” “The kids make it easy,” Ghillieri says. “They come in with a good attitude and understanding of what we need to accomplish. I’m really proud of how much work they put into their education.”

The Results Tell the Tale
Ghilieri tells of the many success stories the program has been a part of, including a young woman with a speech impediment who worked on self-determination, self-advocacy and reading skills. She recently graduated from Boise State and is now studying to be a physical therapist.
Another student struggled with math and didn’t even know if he wanted to stay in school when he began as a freshman. “It wasn’t easy for him,” Ghilieri says. “But we worked with him to the very end to help him do what he wanted to do.”
What he wanted to do was sail, so after graduation, he went to a maritime school in Texas and is now the captain of a Florida sailboat using his math skills on a daily basis.
Santos credits the program and her basketball prowess with getting her into Holy Names University, where she graduated in 2018 with a BS in criminal justice and an art minor.
“It is cool to see the different routes students go through to reach whatever their passion is,” Ghilieri says.

Hannah successfully graduated from Holy Names University with a degree in Criminal Justice and is now attending the police academy.

FINANCIALS
Bishop Manogue Catholic High School is proud to share the financial statements for 2019-2020 and 2020-2021.
The pie charts below provide a graphical representation of the school’s income and expenditures based on category.
The Board of Directors and the Financial Department are happy to report the financial well-being of Bishop Manogue continues to improve. It is a priority to maintain the tuition rate with the actual cost to educate a student, and once again that goal was met. Additionally, the school was able to make principal payments toward debt reduction over the last year totaling over $543K. Total debt reduction over the past two years has surpassed $1,000,000.
From 2020 to 2021, total revenues increased by 9 percent to $11,170,996. This is due to an increase in total revenues which includes tuition, donations, fundraising, COVID funding, and other revenue sources.

leadership believes this upward momentum will continue. A primary goal for fiscal year 2022 is to be debt-free.
Due to COVID restrictions in the last two fiscal years, there was a shift in spending, which provided an opportunity for new and creative ways to devote money for improvements to the school during the pandemic. In years past, many obvious and physical changes were made by upgrading classrooms, sports complexes, safety equipment, and more. However, for the last two years, much of the focus and spending has been geared toward safety and technology efforts to help keep students and faculty healthy and safe while still providing top-notch education.
In addition to the “pandemic-focused” spending, the school contributed over $500,000 during the past two years towards building and capital improvements which included two new science labs and new carpeting throughout the school. Other notable spending included over $727,000 towards athletics, clubs, and organizations which included resurfacing the tennis courts and upgrading the technology infrastructure throughout the school.
Finally, the school continues to offer financial assistance or discounts to 3 in 5 students who attend Bishop Manogue with the full realization that providing our students with an opportunity to access a faith-based, college-preparatory education remains a top priority.
Many of the accomplishments listed above can only be met through the dedication of BMCHS supporters; for that, Bishop Manogue is forever grateful. Thank you for investing in the future.
