In their first comprehensive architectural monograph, the architects of DEMOGO explore the driving question of the importance of context for their architecture and invite designers and theorists to reflect with them on the relationship between contemporary spaces and complex contexts. Built and planned projects are presented in chronological order with specially produced drawings and models. The most remarkable buildings and contexts are captured through the eyes of Iwan Baan.

The guest authors Petra Blaisse, Pippo Ciorra, Giovanni Corbellini, Sara Marini, and Alberto Bertagna also shed light on central questions of DEMOGO's work and supplement the monograph with a variety of perspectives and personal reflections.

MODERNISM IN AFRICA

THE ARCHITECTURE OF

Many African countries are home to extraordinary architecture that is virtually unknown. There are interpretations of Art Deco, International Style, Brutalism as well as of African vernacular architecture. Climate-responsive buildings with a fluidity of interior and exterior spaces play a large role. While many of these 20th century architects were of European origin, they were deeply influenced by their surroundings and found original, site-specific expressions, often in collaboration with African architects. A focus of the construction

activities were educational buildings which played an important role for these young nations that mostly gained their independence in the 1960s. While some of the documented buildings have been restored, others are still awaiting reconstruction.

China’s Belt and Road Initiative, started in 2013, has transformed many places around the world but also China itself. In some cases, it provided crucial infrastructure, such as the General Hospital of Niger in Niamey or the National Library of El Salvador, while it also generated entire urban areas, e.g. the Free Zone in Khorghos, Kazakhstan, with sometimes controversial effects to local communities and the environment. Based on research undertaken at the Politecnico di Torino, this publication looks at the Belt and Road Initia-

tive in architectural and spatial terms. Organized in thematic categories, it entails a survey of 21 case studies and investigates the impact of these China-backed projects. All buildings are documented with maps, architectural drawings and photographs specifically created for this book.

Contrary to the view that postmodern architects regarded themselves as self-referential artists, this book draws on the buildings, projects and writings of Charles Willard Moore (1925–1993) to reveal the architect’s sociopolitical aspirations.

Moore, one of the founders of postmodernism, wanted to create places that would inform people about where and who they are. His designed spaces were intended to counteract the alienation created by a technocratic mass

society. Moore’s architecture was intended to create the conditions for political action in a public sphere that promotes a diversity of citizens’ voices.

Achim Reese presents a reassessment of the work of Charles W. Moore, who dedicated himself to opposing a conformist mass society.

Viennese Architect Hermann Czech has been shaping a heterogeneous and ambivalent oeuvre since the late 1960s, persisting to the present day. His approach, blending theory and practice in what he calls “Denken zum Entwurf”, is a central theme. Through dialectical pairs of concepts the book explores Czech’s engagement with architecture’s internal contradictions and illustrates how he seeks to resolve architectural dilemmas in a dialectical manner.

Czech’s position is discussed in relation to the opposing pairs audacity/underestimation, consumption/production, artwork/utility, mannerism/participation, subjectivity/objectivity, and old/new. This aims to spotlight aspects of his work that have received limited attention in existing literature.

Since 1945, refugee and DP camps as a form of temporary mass housing have been either ignored or discussed only in the margins of architectural history. In this book, Antje Senarclens de Grancy examines for the first time the camps built in the early 20th century within a context of modernist architecture and urban planning.

In the refugee camp, modernist forms are condensed, accelerated and radicalized as if under a magnifying glass: ideas of rationalization

and hygiene, of standardization and prefabrication, of urban planning and of managing individual needs in a context of war and catastrophe. The focus is on refugee camps set up by the Habsburg state during the First World War as instant cities and planned by architects for purposes of internment and control.

The architectural work of Hans and Wassili Luckhardt (1890–1954/1889–1972) is not yet adequately appreciated. As members of the Glass Chain initiative and the Ring collective, they shaped, especially through their work with Alfons Anker, the development of Modernist architecture in the 1920s, as evidenced by their winning design for the layout of Berlin’s Alexanderplatz. While their early work was anchored in utopian expressionism, a more objective attitude emerged later, based on the application of new architectural constructs.

The book documents all 40 of Hans and Wassili Luckhardt’s realized buildings. Two essays deal with the unbuilt and utopian projects. Newly taken photographs and newly drawn plans by Carsten Krohn complement the historical illustrations.

Design has long established itself as an independent research competence. The New Experimental Research in Design (NERD) series seeks to provide a public platform to reflect upon and discuss the specifically experimental dimension of the field. The researchers from around the world exhibit a diverse and insightful range of approaches, giving rise to further debate and action in the rapidly evolving field. In times of multiple crises – the authors in this volume strive to find tactics of response. They introduce experiments into more-than-human

design, co-species production, critical algorithmic immersion, feminist engagements with new materialism and more. From autoethnographic explorations to socially engaged methods, they challenge not just the role of design in these times, but the self-positioning of the designer.

Design’s Dilemma

b

etween A rt and Problem S olv ing

The design dilemma is based on the historic separation of design and art since the late Middle Ages. It describes the transformation of design from an art discipline to a problem-solving discipline. On the one hand, this great divergence is accompanied by myths that construct opposites of free art and unfree design, of aura and loss of aura, or of distance and touch. On the other hand, the avant-gardes have often invoked the unity of art and design, which museums or marketing also

take up again today. In order to better understand design’s wandering between art and non-art, its 600-year history of ideas is now traced for the first time in the fields of art and industrial history as well as the philosophy of pragmatism, technicism, capitalism, functionalism or Darwinism.

Studies in Mixed Material Architecture

Most modern buildings are built from diverse materials, but few confront their manifold composition as a question of both design and performance. This book takes a close look at a series of global building traditions and contemporary practices to uncover the possibilities and challenges of working with mixed materials. Visually stunning, color-coded drawings reveal the materials and construction for every project. Through case studies, design experiments and writings, the authors examine the opportunities of heterogeneous con-

struction for contemporary, sustainable, circular, and culturally situated architecture. With contributions by Jeannette Kuo, Ajay Manthripragada, and Jesús Vassallo, and photography by Naho Kubota. Graphic design by Andrew LeClair.

The wall design is an inversion of confined masonry, a construction system ubiquitous in developing countries around the world. In lieu of the typical concrete frame and masonry infill, this project combines a dry-stacked brick frame with timber bracing to provide lateral stability. The timber elements are milled to the dimension of the brick, enabling a seamless integration in the masonry coursing. The rotation of the brick from layer to layer produces a stepping effect at the corner, creating a clear distinction between this construction method and the seamlessness of other common trabeation systems.

This book examines the key role of the digital image in architecture over four decades – in the process of digitizing knowledge in theory and practice – as well as its influence on architectural design and visualization: the transition from the analogue to the digital age is analyzed on the basis of 51 design visualizations, from hand drawings to photomontage to computer renderings, in order to illustrate how architecture has been impacted by digital methods and media.

Architecture Transformed is the result of a collaboration between the Deutsches Doku-

This book shows how architectural design can improve housing. It looks at 14 innovative multiunit dwelling projects through the lenses of current research on urban housing systems, driven by questions on social, environmental, and economic sustainability. Residential buildings designed for diverse cultural contexts are brought together and examined according to spatial antonyms: the individual and communal, the interior and exterior, and the determined and undetermined, to create a resource for future architectural practice. The book concentrates on design decisions and

incorporates rich illustrations and conversations with architects and residents. It follows a series of talks curated by the Melbourne School of Design to extend the debate on the missing links between architectural practice and housing research.

What is it like to live in one of the research houses? How has the concept of “building simply” worked out in practice?

This book presents an evaluation of long-term measurements in relation to three experimental buildings made of solid wood, masonry, and lightweight concrete in a monolithic construction form, and provides insights into how the designers’ original ideas are reflected in actual use. The three buildings are compared in

comfort. Surveys of the residents and a photo series add to our understanding of the human experience. This transparent comparison is intended to contribute to the further development of the “building simply” concept.

BUK ETHZ MADE OF SOLAR

BIRKHÄUSER

The rapid development of solar technology is not manifesting itself in terms of more efficient energy generation, it is also reducing costs, so that solar architecture may soon be the new normal. Solar components are increasingly finding their way into architecture as a wide range of technical solutions opens up fascinating new design possibilities. Made of Solar showcases the principles and qualities of a new architecture. Integrated on

roof or façade, the carefully designed solutions presented here follow the rules of solar power production, but also deliver new architectural freedoms. The book selects and presents 25 pioneering structures via 3D details, plans, graphics, and large-format color photographs.

Temporary Tecture is a fundamental statement on the impact and significance of temporary infrastructures in the city: not only do they ensure the functioning of numerous processes –from construction and dismantling to orientation and protection – but they also shape the cityscape significantly as an overarching structure. Despite their omnipresence, these structures of necessity continue to lead a shadowy existence in both professional discourse and public perception.

This book opens up a new perspective on what is described here for the first time as contemporary vernacular architecture. It shows that it even offers an architectural language from which architects can learn in terms of adaptability, use of local resources, circular economy and conceptual radicalism.

The design classics that are still handmade today by the fourth generation of the Auböck workshop in Vienna were ahead of their time from the very beginning and shaped Austrian design across generations.

The book focuses on the style-defining era of the interwar and post-war period and also refers to the experimental 1980s. The works are viewed through the lens of surrealism. For the first time, works by the sculptor and textile artist Mara Uckunowa-Auböck (1895-1987),

who met Carl Auböck II (1900-1957) at the Bauhaus in Weimar, are also presented. The book contains newly produced photographs of the essential, original works shown in the exhibition, as well as a foreword by Lilli Hollein and texts by Kimberly Bradley, Nina Schedelmayer and Bärbel Vischer.

Le Corbusier not only designed and built churches, but also engaged intensely with religion and faith and, through his oeuvre, had a significant impact on church architecture of the twentieth century. The book explains Le Corbusier’s relationship with religion; it introduces his designs for La Sainte-Baume, the Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut de Ronchamp, La Tourette monastery, and the church of St. Pierre, and investigates his impact on the ensuing modern church architecture in Europe. This includes the Jubilee Church by Richard Meier, the Ignatius Chapel by Steven Holl, the

Santa Maria Church by Álvaro Siza, Tadao Ando’s Meditation Space, and the Chapel of Reconciliation by Reitermann & Sassenroth. For the third edition, the introduction, the conclusion, and the bibliography have been revised and supplemented.

9 783035 628920 149 Luis Burriel Bielza notes Father Couesnongle’s instructions regarding the altar for the monastery of La Tourette: “The altar does not have to be formed by a slab on columns, but to make block with the ground, a solid mass.” The importance of the connection with the ground will be developed in the next chapter. Like the stone blocks at the entrance of each Unité, the altar is the tuning fork of the whole space. When interviewed by the Dominicans in 1960 Le Corbusier said of La Tourette: The altars mark the centre of gravity as well as the value and hierarchy of everything. In music there are keys, ranges and chords. An altar is “par excellence” the hallowed place that sets the tone, that has to trigger the radiance of the work. This is made possible by proportions. Proportion is an ineffable thing. invented the term “ineffable space”: places start to radiate and they generate an “ineffable space” – a shock. Altars, “high” altars, also designate, like the “high” seas, the depths and profoundness of their raison d’être. Once again the experience of religion is firmly allied to the experience of space. The floor is finished in Le Corbusier’s opus optimum meaning that the steps of the reader are continually mapped against the sequence of the Modulor (Fig. 5.51). The walls similarly were conceived in Modulor panels. Prostration forms an important part of the Dominican liturgy but it only happens at the key stage of initiation into the order. When a Dominican monk lies flat on the Modulor floor of La Tourette its lines are imprinted on his body and he is absorbed into the radiant web of mathematical relationships that govern both the building and its environment. Le Corbusier and Trouin discussed the possibility of a “Radiant Order” to be created at La Sainte Baume – something similar appears to be happening here. The voices of the monks would add to the overall effect, amplified by the extraordinary acoustic, a reverberation time of seven seconds, sounds bouncing back from the deepest recesses of space, stimulating questions about its meaning. Particularly intriguing is the dark void that holds the organ pipes at the end of the monks’ side of the church (Fig. 5.52). Le Corbusier wanted it to be circular in form but it was built square as a cost cutting measure. Set into the wall, it is a geometric echo of the square in the ceiling above, this time releasing a blaze of light. What appears to be at stake is the x-axis of the body set perpendicular to the y-axis of the spirit emanating from the hole in the roof above. All our movements are mapped within this grid. There are three key light sources in the church that let in light at different times of day: “Thus the church was joined to the cosmos like the pyramids and other sacred edifices,” wrote Xenakis, something that should be borne in mind for the discussion in the next chapter. There is a vertical slot in the wall in the more public east end of the building, a square hole in the ceiling at the other end, and the coloured circles set within the single height space of the ear-shaped crypt that protrudes beyond the northern boundaries of the church. In order to reach this space it is necessary either to step laboriously up and over the corner of the main altar platform or go past the 5.51 – View of main altar showing opus optimum floor 5.50 – Statue of Mary against red ‘bodily’ background in the church 83 Sited on top of a hill overlooking the quiet, ex-mining town of Ronchamp on the eastern edge of France, the chapel of Notre Dame du Haut Ronchamp (Fig. 4.1), the counterpart of Notre Dame du Bas in the village below, is framed within a complex of buildings which include accommodation for pilgrims (Fig. 4.2), a house for the curate (Fig. 4.3) and a small ziggurat shaped war memorial with seven steps (Fig. 4.4). It is characterised by the curve of its massive roof which Le Corbusier likened to a crab shell, an “object that evokes a poetic reaction”, that he picked up on a beach in Long Island, admirable for its radiant geometry, its structure and, possibly, its symbolic association with Demeter. The space within the chapel and the openings into the outside world are defined by the curves of the three minor chapels, each of its four sides being very different in character. The scheme at Ronchamp was the result of “meticulous research,” involving the continual adjustment of a “thousand factors … which no-one ought or would wish to speak of.”  Its evolution, first documented by Daniele Pauly has since been subject to extensive study by others, but with minimal consideration of the liturgical and social issues that underpin its architecture, foregrounded here. The architectural heritage of postmodernism bears witness to an era that was defined by the energy crises of the 1970s, the return to architecture as a means of communication and a conduit of meaning, neoliberalism in the construction sector, the end of grand narratives, and the spirit of optimism in the early 1990s. Focusing on the German-speaking world, this volume reveals how this heritage can be captured, preserved and further developed. It includes contributions from the conference of the same name, which took place in Weimar in March 2022 in collaboration with ETH Zurich.

The authors shed light on the theoretical and practical challenges of dealing with an era that is subject to a wide range of qualitative perceptions and is – as its name suggests – still ongoing.

The high-tech architecture of the 1970s–1990s is typically characterized by the use and exhibition of advanced technologies. In terms of appearance, these buildings often have innovative façades, supporting structures accentuated in color, and expressively displayed technology systems. Unfortunately, however, the rapid obsolescence of technology has often led to the complete replacement of the very systems that defined the architectural form. In 2023, an international conference at ETH Zurich in collaboration with BauhausUniversität Weimar explored the question of

how best to deal with the structural legacy of technologically innovative architecture. This book summarizes the results and provides an overview of the current state of research.

All’antica Bauornamentik der Frührenaissance in Italien

All’antica

Bauornamentik der Frührenaissance in Italien

The beginnings of Renaissance architecture in Florence, around 1420, were accompanied by a renewal of sculptural architectural ornamentation, and soon cast their spell over the rest of Europe. The ‘antique style’ was considered modern everywhere; Gothic architecture, the previous notion of modern, fell into gradual disrepute. This was an epoch-making paradigm shift, underpinned as architectural theory also took up the subject of architectural ornamentation. For the first time, Joachim

Poeschke presents a detailed study of architectural ornamentation’s development in Italy from approx. 1420 to 1490. His focus is on the period’s productive engagement with antiquity, which defined the artistic work of the early Renaissance to a huge extent, and which is best noted in the details of architectural ornamentation.

Georg Eisler (1928–1998) showed unwavering commitment to figurative painting and depicted his environment with a critical eye. Throughout his life, he devoted himself to a variety of themes that reveal his unique view of the world. His primary interest was people in their social and societal contexts.

In addition to mundane subjects such as coffee house scenes, still lifes and portraits both of well-known contemporaries and his own acquaintances, he critically examined social and political issues and dealt with these through his art. He also drew on personal

experiences, such as his period of exile in Britain, in his paintings.

This publication is the first comprehensive catalog raisonné of Eisler’s diverse oeuvre, spanning more than 1,700 paintings.

Friedrich von Amerling (1803–1887) was one of Vienna’s most important portraitists. His oeuvre reads like a who’s who of the 19th century. He received commissions from the Habsburg court, the Austrian nobility, and the haute bourgeoisie, because no other portraitist could blend realism and idealism so aptly. In addition, throughout his life Amerling studied his own appearance in a series of self-portraits and portrayed many of his fellow artists. He became particularly popular for his depictions of young women.

Amerling’s approximately 1,200 paintings are collected here for the first time in an illustrat-

ed catalog raisonné. Several essays discuss the painter’s outstanding artistic talent, his life, his models, his collection, and his residence.

The work of the Austrian artist Rainer Wölzl deals with historical processes and their representability; he negotiates cultural, social, and political topics and creates complex connections between past and present, media and time, documentation and fiction. Wölzl’s subjects are often based on reflections on power. Methodically, he combines principles of montage and dispersion in order to develop new connections and question our habitual ways of looking at art and the world. Wölzl’s art is rich in allusions. It leaves room

for contradictions and connects current, historical, and imagined worlds. This monograph presents the artist’s works from 2006 to the present day in a compendium of large-format charcoal drawings, paintings, graphs, sculptures, and installations.

This book presents artistic and theoretical positions that deal with the dynamics of and points of transition between animate and inanimate matter. Following on from the exhibition Holobiont: Life Is Other (Bregenz/Vienna, 2021/2022), it explores how art, philosophy, and the technological sciences destabilize and expand the concept of living things. How do biological entities, machines, media, architectures, networks develop symbiotically in the context of biotechnological possibilities and ecological challenges?

The Holobiont theory of biologist Lynn Margulis opens up new perspectives on life as a coop-

erative, holistic system: the “other” is not assimilated, integrated; instead it is preserved in its unavailability and peculiarity as new connections emerge.

The work of OFIS arhitekti shifts between the interplay of Slovenian and European identity, traditional construction and modern design language. This monograph reflects this diversity in 24 selected buildings, which include sports facilities, hotels, social housing, and single-family homes. In addition to classic new buildings, the presented projects also include conversions and revitalisations, such as the Hotel Bohinj on Lake Bled. Each building is

comprehensively documented in large-format photographs, texts, and drawings. Particular focus is placed on the constructions and building details in 1:5 to 1:20 scales. Moreover, isometrics and exploded views illustrate the analytical approach.

Building measures in existing buildings is of crucial importance for the path to a climateneutral future. Nevertheless, continuing to build not only requires planners to take great care in planning, but also to be patient and imaginative when dealing with unforeseeable problems. This book chronicles outstanding quality of living conditions that can be created through alterations and conversions, refurbishments, renovations and modernisations carried out on existing buildings. It shows

26 exciting best practice projects from the years 2014–2023 – from a converted church in London to a multi-storey car park extension in Cologne. Detailed drawings at a 1:20 scale provide a precise picture of each of the construction solutions along with floor plans and sections.

In order for the turnaround in the construction industry to succeed, material resources must be fully reused and recycled. Single-origin and low-pollutant building materials, which are used in reversible component joints and are simply joined, are the basic prerequisite for the circular design of buildings. This handbook explains how to plan and build according to the circular principle. It shows the past and present of circular architecture and analyses the fundamentals of single-origin construction in terms of methodology, mate-

rial and construction. Joining and connecting techniques will be discussed, as well as the choice of materials in general and the life cycles of individual layers and their functions.

How can architectural constructions be integrated into the landscape? How is architecture conceivable in flood-prone areas or arid landscapes? What role do the topography and materiality of the landscape play in architecture? These and other questions are addressed in the newly published DETAIL edition Spuren – Traces. It discusses how “reading”, observing, and capturing space and landscape determine an architectural design in different landscape contexts. The book provides insight into an approach to architectural design. On the basis of selected works created between 2021 and 2023 in the master’s programme at the Chair for Building and Design under the direction of Prof. Uta Graf at TU Munich, certain aspects become the focus of consideration. Colourful,

large-format illustrations of artefacts and models, project descriptions and essays document the various issues. The order of the works is chronological, but can be understood and read differently. The open structure of the book makes it possible to discover and follow “traces” while reading it.

We are committed as a company to climate protection

Out of conviction and a strong sense of responsibility, Birkhäuser is committed to a climateconscious and climatefriendly book production.

We use only paper from sustainable forestry and plantbased inks and print our books as locally as possible in order to keep transportation distances to a minimum. Together with our partners, we produce our books in a climateneutral manner. This includes the purchase of climate certificates to offset CO2 emissions.

The conscious protection of the environment, the climate and nature is a core value of our publishing house.
