Mondays T Hudson’s Seafood House on the Dock:
An Island Landmark
Built in 1912 as a seafood processing plant, Hudson’s has been a family-owned business since the 1920s, primarily as a seafood processing plant. Owned and named by the venerable J. B. Hudson, Sr., thousands of oysters were processed by Hudson’s Seafood. These oysters were brought in by oar-powered boats known as bateaux, shucked at Hudson’s, then sent by barge to the Northeast. The discarded shells were dispersed creating the very peninsula and foundation on which the restaurant currently stands. This class will be presented on the dock at Hudson’s by Andrew Carmines, the founder and president of Shell Ring Oyster Company and general manager of Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks. You will learn the amazing history of this popular restaurant, the effects of Hurricane Matthew, information about oyster farming, artificial oyster reefs, and how oyster beds and reefs are essential to salt marshes where they help control erosion and filter and cleanse huge volumes of water.
Andrew Carmines, besides being general manager of Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks, has also been involved in several environmental initiatives such as the Hilton Head Island Sea Turtle Project and is a member of the Southern Shrimpers Alliance and the East Coast Shellfish Growers Association. Mondays & Wednesdays T Drawing and Sketching Our
Low Country Landscape
Drawing is an exciting and satisfying way to record what we see, and what could be better than to draw on site in the Low Country. Alex Sharma will demonstrate how to use graphite pencils to create landscape scenes through contour line, pattern, and value starting with the basics of composition and perspective to create the illusion of space and volume. Prepare to enter a while new world of possibilities as we discover our local landscape in a whole new way. Supply List (available at Staples or Walmart): • Sketch pad your choice size • A soft eraser, pink pearl, or white • A pencil set of varying hard to soft lead so that you can draw light lines and very dark, thick lines. Alternatively, 3 pencils: HB (any office pencil is fine), a 6B, or an Ebony Pencil 2B or a 3B. • Bring a folding chair. Alexandra Sharma has a Masters in Fine Arts and has taught art at the university level. She is a member of the Hilton Head Art League, The Apple Pie Painters, and Delta Phi Delta, the national art honorary. She is represented locally by the Charles Street Gallery in Beaufort, SC. Wednesdays T Current Events Let’s get together, liberals and conservatives alike, to discuss last days of the Trump presidency and the first months of the new Biden administration. Those of you who have participated in Current Events before know we welcome all points of view, encourage a frank and open discussion, and respect everyone’s opinion. Due to the interactive nature of the class and considering the outdoor venue, we have limited the class size to fifteen. Since we expect a much larger number of people to sign up, we will choose the fifteen by lottery and inform those chosen by email. Your moderators: Bruce Lerner is a retired sales and marketing executive and small business owner. He provides a liberal perspective to the discussion. Jim Van Cleave is a thirty-seven-year veteran of Procter & Gamble in advertising, media, and TV production. He is a conservative. Wednesdays T Green’s Shell Enclosure This outdoor talk at Green’s Shell Enclosure will provide background on the prehistory of Hilton Head Island and will go into detail about the shell rings that are scattered about the island. Green’s Shell Enclosure is particularly interesting because it provides our last glimpse of the chiefdoms that existed in the fourteenth century AD. It is an unusual shell ring because of its late date and the possibility that it reflects the first adoption of agriculture along this portion of the coast. Wear comfortable shoes as some walking is required. Rex Garniewicz has a PhD in archaeology from Indiana University and is currently the President of the Coastal Discovery Museum. His archaeological research focuses on the interpretation of animal bones from archaeological sites and the transition to agriculture. Thursdays T Haiku on the Beach Haiku on the Beach is a hands-on haiku writing gathering. We will write haiku collaboratively and have a lot of fun. The instructor will be prepared to discuss haiku following the participants' interests. She will introduce historical and contemporary haiku examples written both in English and Japanese. She would love to be re-connected with the people who had come to her previous classes. And, she would like to meet new people interested in haiku after such a troublesome time. Bring a folding chair. Miho Kinnas is the author of two poetry books and holds a Master of Fine Arts in poetry from the City University of Hong Kong. She has conducted many haiku workshops, including for LLHHI and the Pat Conroy Literary Center. She has been the artist in residence at Beaufort Middle School for the past two years.

Thursdays T Nature Walk through the Coastal Discovery Museum
Honey Horn Grounds
Carlos Chacon, Manager of Natural History at the Coastal Discovery Museum will lead a nature walk through the Grounds at Honey Horn. The walk will emphasize native trees found on HHI and their natural history. Participants will learn how to identify some of the most iconic trees found on HHI, their history and ethnobotanical uses. Carlos Chacon is a graduate of University of Costa Rica with a degree in Tropical Biology. He also has an MS in Earth and Environmental Resource Management from University of South Carolina.
