T Green’s Shell Enclosure

This outdoor talk at Green’s Shell Enclosure will provide background on the prehistory of Hilton Head Island and will go into detail about the shell rings that are scattered about the island.

Green’s Shell Enclosure is particularly interesting because it provides our last glimpse of the chiefdoms that existed in the fourteenth century AD. It is an unusual shell ring because of its late date and the possibility that it re ects the rst adoption of agriculture along this portion of the coast.

Wear comfortable shoes as some walking is required.

Rex Garniewicz has a PhD in archaeology from Indiana University and is currently the

President of the Coastal Discovery Museum.

His archaeological research focuses on the interpretation of animal bones from archaeological sites and the transition to agriculture.
