An endowment established in 2006 to honour the memory of BCAA employee Cathy Giles Cathro to remember her dedication to exceptional customer service by supporting the next generation of customer service professionals in British Columbia. Cathy trained and mentored numerous BCIT graduates, often commenting on her pleasure in sharing with them her many years of experience in serving BCAA customers.

BCIT Marketing Communication Industry Project Award

An award established in 2013 to recognize the top student team that developed an integrated marketing communications campaign for a real industry client. This project is part of their capstone course where all of the Marketing Communications students develop a comprehensive marketing campaign and compete for the client’s business with a pitch presentation.

An annual award established in 2014 by the department. This is a peernominated award for Marketing Communications students that have demonstrated an exceptional ability to foster a feeling of camaraderie among members of a team, enabling the team to cooperate and work well together.

BCIT Marketing Communications Award in Honour of Carroll Nelson

An endowment established in 2006 in honour of Carroll Nelson, a BCIT teaching faculty member for 25 years and recipient of the 2005 BCIT Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award. She was a former program head for Marketing Communications and Direct Response Marketing and in 1985, worked on re-branding the marketing curriculum and initiated a hugely successful internship program. In 1998, Carroll introduced the first Direct Marketing program in Canada and educated, challenged, mentored, and led her students to be the best they can be. Her success is reflected in the widely acknowledged superior performance of BCIT Marketing graduates.

BCIT Marketing Management Business Consulting Award

An endowment established in 2010 by the BCIT Marketing Management program with contributions from external industry partners who support the BCIT Marketing Management business consulting program. The income earned on the fund each year will provide a graduating achievement award for a student in the Professional Sales, Entrepreneurship, Professional Real Estate or Tourism Management options of BCIT’s Marketing Management Diploma of Technology program.

BCIT Professional Sales Student Silent Auction Award

An annual award established in 2010 by the department.

Brian Devereaux Memorial Award

An annual award established in 2016 by the Canadian Materials Handling and Distribution Society (CMHDS). The award is in memory of Brian Devereaux, a popular and long-time member of the society. Brian worked at the London Drugs Distribution Centre for more than 40 years and shaped the company significantly during that time. He will be remembered by many for his humor and willingness to freely give of his time to mentor others in the logistics industry.

British Columbia Institute for Studies in International Trade Award for Excellence in Studies in International Trade

An endowment established in 2006.

Building Owners and Managers Association of BC, Gerry Thomson Memorial Award

An endowment established in 1996. In 2005, the award was amended to honour the memory of BOMA’s past president, Gerry Thomson, who also managed BOMA’s education program, resulting in the establishment of this endowment with BCIT.

Chartered Professionals in Human Resources Award

An annual award established in 2004. The Chartered Professionals in Human Resources, committed to providing leadership in HR excellence, is the foremost professional association for those involved in the business of people.

Cintas Rising Phoenix Sales Award

An annual award established in 2021.

Recipient: Benchawan Klinfung, Marketing Management - Professional Sales Option

Columbia Plastics Ltd. Award

An annual award established in 1995.

Recipient: Michael Josh Tolentino, Business Operations Management

CPA Education Foundation (R. Glynn Spelliscy) Award

An annual award established in 1995 by the CMA to honour Glynn Spelliscy for his contributions to the society. He held many positions provincially and is a former national president.

Recipient: Rachelle Swanson-Wolansky, Accounting

CPA Education Foundation (William B. Hards Memorial) Award

An annual award established in 1977 by the CMA and renamed to honour William Hards in 1994 to commemorate his years of service to the society. The William Hards award is presented to a graduating Financial Management Diploma student who has demonstrated very strong academic performance and a course of conduct benefiting other students in the Diploma program, and in addition has indicated an intention to enroll in both the BTech and CPA programs.

CPA Education Foundation Awards for Bachelor of Technology

An annual award established in 1999. The Chartered Professional Accountants’ Education Foundation’s (CPAEF) goal is to advance accounting education through scholarships for students, sponsoring relevant and practical research, and bringing together academics in BC. The recipients of this award should demonstrate strong academic achievement and community service.

The CPABC Vancouver Chapter Award

An annual award established in 2016 by the CPABC Vancouver Chapter to a graduating student intending to become a CPA who has demonstrated volunteerism or leadership in the community.

Duncan McPhee Memorial Award

An annual award established in 2010 in memory of Duncan McPhee, a 2006 graduate of BCIT’s Professional Real Estate program, who passed away in 2008. Born and raised in Lions Bay, Duncan was a young man of many passions. He was a gifted guitar player and an enthusiastic skier. He was also passionate about real estate, and worked in Whistler where his charisma and positive attitude left lasting impressions on clients and coworkers alike. The Duncan McPhee Memorial Award is awarded to a graduate of BCIT’s Professional Real Estate program based on their academic and all-around achievements in the last year of studies.

An endowment established in 2000, Fasken Martineau is one of the world’s leading international business law and litigation firms.

An endowment established in 2005 by former BCIT Marketing Professional Sales program head, Glenna Urbshadt.

Jill Vassallo Memorial Award

An endowment established in 2009 by faculty member Dr. Kevin Wainwright and RG Properties. In 2011, the endowment was renamed in memory of Jill Vassallo, a BCIT Bachelor of Business Administration student and graduate of Marketing Communications (2010). Jill passed away from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on September 7, 2010, the day she would have begun classes in the BBA. Jill was just shy of her 20th birthday. It had been her fourth battle with the disease which first emerged at the age of four. Known for her organizational and people skills, the foundational skills she learned at BCIT helped Jill also learn the importance of working with others. And while she enjoyed team management, her ability to be a leader was one of her greatest attributes. Jill lived spontaneously and never let a day go by where she didn’t live life to the fullest. During her long illness, Jill maintained a blog and kept connected with family, friends, and classmates. She was an inspiring individual and this endowment is dedicated to honour her spirit and her life. “I can laugh at anything and I’m always smiling.” Jillian Vassallo

Laurie Jack Memorial Award

An endowment established in 1977 by family, friends, colleagues, and the BCIT Student Association in memory of Laurie Jack, former president of the Student Association. The annual interest provides awards to students who have represented the student body at BCIT.

Leavitt Machinery Achievement of Excellence Awards

Annual awards established in 2004. Leavitt Machinery, a proud employer of many BCIT Grads over the years, acknowledges the hard work and determination it takes to be successful at BCIT. Leavitt Machinery sells, rents, leases, and provides aftermarket support for materials handling and high reach equipment. With branches throughout, BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Washington, and Oregon, Leavitt Machinery will continue to lean on BCIT Grads for growth.

Luke Fahrmann Memorial Award

An annual award established in 2017 to honour Luke Fahrmann, a 2016 graduate of the Television and Video Production program, whose sudden passing was a great shock to all who knew him. What started as a onetime donation, initiated by faculty and students at BCIT, has grown into a permanent endowment, allowing Luke's legacy to live on. This award is presented to two students who embody Luke's raw passion and unbridled enthusiasm for photography and digital storytelling.

An endowment established in 1995 by the New Car Dealer’s Association of BC in honour of Julia’s 28 years of support of their organization, including 12 years as show manager of the International Auto Show.

OMNI Television Award in Graphic Design

An endowment established in 2010. Omni Television is a leading provider of ethno-cultural television programming.

Peter Thomson Memorial Award

An annual award established by Dr. Robert Gayton and family in memory of their close friend Peter Thomson. Peter was the director of the BCIT Venture Centre since 1986 who passed away suddenly in October 2007. In his honour, the Centre was renamed the Peter Thomson Centre for Venture Development. This award was created to recognize the achievements of graduates who encompass the ideas that were at the heart of Peter Thomson’s vision to support and empower young entrepreneurs to create a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of entrepreneurial business.

Real Estate Institute of BC, Robert (Bob) Mikitka Memorial Award

An endowment established in 1999. The REIBC is the only professional organization whose members come from every segment of the real estate community and across nine provincial chapters. Their mission is to advance and recognize excellence in education, knowledge, professional development, and business practices uniting all sectors of the real estate industry. Bob Mikitka worked as a real estate appraiser for 35 years and was very active in professional real estate organizations, serving for many years on several boards, culminating in the position of president of the Real Estate Institute of BC and chairman of the Real Estate Foundation of BC.

Robert K. Wallace Award

An endowment established in 2013 by the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver and friends and colleagues of Robert Wallace in honour of his retirement. The annual interest provides a graduating achievement award for a student from the Professional Real Estate program.

Robert Malcolm Memorial Award

An endowment established in 2011 by the brother of the late Robert Malcolm. Mr. Malcolm was a long-time newscaster who anchored the top-rated BCTV Night Final newscast from 1972-1991. He passed away in August 2010 at the age of 69. He began his career in radio, including CKDA in Victoria and CFUN and CKNW in Vancouver before taking over the helm of Night Final. He had interests in writing, directing, and broadcasting and did some lecturing and mentoring of students at BCIT.

Robert Nason Award for Excellence in Direction of a Television and Video Production

An award established in 2017 to honour and celebrate Robert Nason, one of BCIT’s outstanding and most long-serving faculty members. Rob has been with BCIT’s Broadcast and Media Communications program for 46 years. Over this time, he has been an invaluable source of knowledge and skill, inspiring hundreds of students as they pursue careers in the area of television and video production. BCIT is forever grateful to Rob for his commitment and dedication to this program and BCIT students.

An annual award established in 2007. For more than 50 years, Westkey Graphics, a leading manufacturer of printed products, has manufactured and distributed business forms and commercial/promotional products throughout Western Canada and Northwestern United States.

William (Bill) Gillis Memorial Award in Business Management Studies

An endowment established in 2005 by Jim Gillis, Dianne Devlin, and David Gillis in memory of their father, Bill Gillis, a pioneer in the BC lumber industry and founder of Mill & Timber Products Ltd. Bill was a business and community leader, as well as an environmentalist. In 2002, he was inducted into the Fraser River Hall of Fame in recognition of his significant and noteworthy contributions to the health and sustainability of the Fraser River.

Phil Henderson Community Service Award

An endowment established in 2006 in honour of Phil Henderson, former manager of the BCIT Student Association for 17 years, in recognition of his extraordinary community service while at BCIT and as a citizen of Burnaby. The award is presented to a graduate who demonstrates exceptional community service at BCIT or the community at large. Phil Henderson passed away on May 10, 2008.

Architectural Mentors Award for Excellence in Architectural Science

An annual award established in 2006 by Peter Lang, IBI Group, who participated in the Architectural Science mentorship program. It is his hope that this award will be an avenue of participation for the profession in the education and encouragement of the next generation of students/employees.

Association of BC Forest Professionals ForesTrust, Wayne Cochrane Memorial Award

An endowment established in 1999 in memory of Association member Wayne Cochrane. The Association of BC Forest Professionals is responsible for registering and regulating British Columbia’s professional foresters and forest technologists and is the largest professional forestry association in Canada.

An annual award established in 2001. The Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC provides awards to students in ASTTBC recognized technology programs through the ASTTBC Foundation. An achievement award established in 2005, this award is presented to a graduate of Civil Engineering, based on achievement in Geotechnical courses in terms 3 and 4.

BC Building Envelope Council – Cameron Harrison Memorial Award

An annual award established in 2011 by the BC Building Envelope Council. Cam was a 2007 graduate of the BCIT Architectural and Building Engineering Technology program, receiving awards for achievement. On a weekend break from work at RDH in Victoria, Cam was involved in a motor vehicle accident and passed away. The award is to recognize his many contributions to the field of Architectural and Building Engineering Technology.

BC Building Envelope Council Education Foundation Graduating Achievement Awards

An award established in 2008. The BCBEC Foundation was established in 2006 from a surplus in the BC Building Envelope Council operating budget. BCBEC is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a platform for proponents of the building industry to discuss issues and exchange information on building envelope issues. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide scholarships for post-secondary students and apprentices who excel in the study of building envelope design, construction, and technology.

BC Hydro Award

An annual award established in 2008. BC Hydro’s primary business activities are the generation and distribution of electricity. It is the third largest electric utility in Canada, and endeavours to provide energy solutions to its customers in an environmentally and socially responsible way by balancing British Columbians’ energy needs with the concerns of the environment.

An endowment established in 2006 by members of the Mining Advisory Committee. Achievement awards are presented to graduates of the BCIT Mineral Exploration and Mining Technology program.

Bennett Land Surveying Ltd. Award

An annual award established in 2005. Bennett Land Surveying Ltd. is a legal, engineering, and topographic survey firm of BC Land Surveyors, and has been active in the Lower Mainland of BC for over 40 years. Their projects range from surveys of individual lots for homeowners to complex residential and commercial projects.

An annual award established in 1994 in memory of the founder of R.F. Binnie & Associates. It was then re-established as an endowment in 2006.

Charles J. Duncan Memorial Award Sponsored by the Dominion Company and the Duncan Family

An endowment established in 1989 by the Duncan family and the Dominion Company in memory of Charles Duncan, who was employed by the Dominion Company for close to 50 years as a carpenter, as was his father before him. Both worked closely with members of the Bentall family.

Darwin and Sara Lamont Appreciation Award

An annual award established in 2018 by Binnie Consulting Ltd. in honour of Darwin Lamont, a BCIT alumnus dedicated to serving the engineering industry and mentoring BCIT graduates during more than 46 years as a Binnie employee. This award is given to a student graduating with a diploma and recognized by faculty as a deserving student in the Civil Engineering program.

Interior Designers Institute of BC Award

An annual award established in 2018. The IDIBC Student Award is given annually to a deserving fourth-year student based on their final Capstone Project. The criteria for the award is the demonstration of IDIBC’s Vision Statement: “To benefit public health, safety and welfare, contribute to the enhancement of the environment and increase the perception, appreciation, and value of design in the community.”

John Salisbury Memorial Achievement Awards

An endowment established in 2011 by Mr. John Salisbury. John was a longtime resident of Pender Harbour, BC on the Sunshine Coast. He passed away in September 2011 at the age of 85 years. It was the education he received at BCIT taking night school courses in mining during the 1970s and his great memories of former Mining Instructor Moose Manifold that were his prime reasons for establishing the John Salisbury Endowment to support students in BCIT’s Mineral Exploration and Mining Technology program.

Ledcor 60th Anniversary Award

An endowment established in 2008 to commemorate 60 years of construction excellence. Employee-owned, with a broad portfolio throughout North America, the Ledcor Group of Companies was founded in 1947 with roots firmly planted in the oil patch. Ledcor expanded geographically and diversified into the building and industrial sectors, with six construction divisions: Commercial Building, Heavy Civil, Industrial, Mining, Pipeline, and Telecommunications.

Lesli Balagno Memorial Award

An annual award created in 2016 by Heffel Balagno Design, the Balagno family and in collaboration with Cantu Hardware & Bath, this award is in memory of Lesli Balagno, one of Vancouver’s most accomplished and respected interior designers.

Ozmer Catt Memorial Award

An endowment established in 1997 by family and friends of Ozmer Catt, father of two BCIT faculty members, Danny and Carl Catt. Recipients of the award exemplify the qualities that Ozmer Catt valued and exhibited: commitment to community service, world peace, the conservation of nature, and a sense of adventure.

SAG Conference Award Foundation Awards in Mining

The SAG Conference Award Foundation established awards to encourage leadership skills and academic achievement in mining and mineral processing. These awards are available in 2020 to students in the Mineral Exploration and Mining Technology Diploma Program, and the Mining and Mineral Resource Engineering Degree Program. Alongside their academic accomplishments, recipients have demonstrated their leadership contributions on campus or in the community through activities such as student government, inter-institute team challenges, volunteering, and campus societies.

The award is given to the student with the highest achievement in geotechnical engineering courses.

John Salisbury Memorial Award

An endowment established in 2011 by Mr. John Salisbury. John was a long-time resident of Pender Harbour, BC on the Sunshine Coast. He passed away in September 2011 at the age of 85. It was the education he received at BCIT taking night school courses in mining during the 1970s and his great memories of former Mining instructor Moose Manifold that were his prime reasons for establishing the John Salisbury Endowment to support students in BCIT’s Mineral Exploration and Mining Technology program.

ASTTBC Reg Ridsdale Memorial Award

An annual award established in 2001 by the late Donald Bealle, AScT, to honour the memory of ‘a mentor and superb teacher’, Electronic Technology Instructor Reg Ridsdale, who died in 1997. Reg Ridsdale developed the BCIT program for the Electronics Department in 1964, and was department head until his retirement in 1982. The Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) provides awards to students in ASTTBC recognized technology programs through the ASTTBC Foundation. Students are also offered a free student membership, which can be obtained by contacting the ASTTBC office.

An endowment established in 2009 by family, friends, and colleagues in memory of James Gordon, who passed away March 20, 2009. Mr. Gordon moved to Canada from the UK in 1975 and in 1983 formed Gordon Crane & Hoist. He established himself as one of the premier crane engineers in Canada. He pursued and was dedicated to numerous charitable, fraternal, and community interests, including Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of BC and Yukon and Chair of the Vancouver Branch of the Engineering Institute of Canada.

Edna Ladner Memorial Award

An endowment established in 2006 through the estate of Edna Ladner. Edna was an ardent researcher of local history and respected author of a book about pioneer life on the Fraser Delta. Her personal account of her mother, who was a nurse and had married into the pioneering Ladner farming and fish-canning dynasty after whom the Delta community is named, has been incorporated into a book that has been used nationally to demonstrate a comparative model of early nursing practices. This award is for graduates who have completed BCIT’s Specialty Nursing, Emergency Nursing Combined Emergency/Critical Care Option.

Lily Bruce Summers Memorial Award

An endowment established in 2007 by the family of Lily Bruce Summers. The fund fulfils her wish to be part of the nursing community, where nurses care about and care for others, which is a philosophy she lived by. Also, because Lily felt strongly that living in Canada provided a good life for her and her family, the fund is a way for her to give back to her community and her country. The recipient of this award is encouraged in their pursuit of becoming a part of the nursing community and wished every success.
