MESSAGE FROM THE INTERIM PRESIDENT OF BCIT

On behalf of all our exceptional faculty and staff here at BCIT, I am very proud to congratulate this year’s student award recipients on their outstanding achievements.

I wish we were able to recognize each of your achievements in person, but be assured we are no less excited and honoured to celebrate you virtually.

BCIT students have persevered throughout the challenges over the last year, demonstrating the unmistakable qualities and skills for which BCIT graduates are recognized: innovation, drive, and leadership. Whether in business, computing, health sciences, construction, energy, or transportation, our students and alumni are poised to succeed on their future journeys.

I’d also like to recognize the support of the community behind our remarkable students.

Congratulations to our 2022 award recipients on their tremendous successes. This has been an incredible year of change and recovery, and as the world continues to change and shift around us, our learners have shown true commitment to their educational goals.

Today, we honour their achievements, as well as their determination, tenacity, and heart.

The BCIT Foundation is extremely proud of supporting and celebrating student success.

As we navigate a changed world, we are reminded of the importance of the BCIT Foundation student awards program, and the incredible impact of these awards on the dynamic needs of our students. BCAA Cathy Giles Cathro Memorial Award An endowment established in 2006 to honour the memory of BCAA employee Cathy Giles Cathro to remember her dedication to exceptional customer service by supporting the next generation of customer service professionals in British Columbia. Cathy trained and mentored numerous BCIT graduates, often commenting on her pleasure in sharing with them her many years of experience in serving BCAA customers.

These awards are presented to students who received outstanding marks in specific courses in their final term(s) or who have demonstrated a combination of high academic standing, leadership, service, and all-round achievement, as selected by faculty.

Absolute Award An annual award established in 2006. Absolute Software is an IT management and security company and a leading provider of firmwareembedded, persistent endpoint security and management solutions.

Recipient: Brian Ho, Bachelor of Business Administration Affinity Group Sales Graduating Achievement Award An annual award established in 2021 for a graduating student of the Professional Sales program.

Recipient: Demmi Skierka, Marketing Management – Professional Sales Anne Lippert Achievement Award in Honour of the BCIT Board of Governors An endowment established in 2004 by board member Anne Lippert and other BCIT Board of Governor members as a legacy of their support of BCIT. The annual interest provides cpacademic and achievement awards for graduates of any eligible full-time BCIT program.

Recipient: Jonas Greig, Financial Planning ASQ Vancouver Quality and Business Excellence Student Award An annual award established in 2005, this award is presented on behalf of all members of the Vancouver Section of the American Society for Quality (ASQ). ASQ Vancouver is the premier resource for Quality professionals in all areas of Business and works to provide its members value in the areas of certification, networking, training and community involvement so that individuals can fulfill the ASQ mission of “Making Good Great”.

Recipient: Margaret Orayani, Business Operations Management BaseTwo Media, Luke Fahrmann Award An annual award established in 2017 to honour Luke Fahrmann—a 2016 graduate of the Television and Video Production program—whose sudden passing was a great shock to all who knew him. Luke’s former employer, Basetwo Media, has generously sponsored this award and would like to present it to a student in their final year of study who has excelled academically and who embodies the spirit of passion and curiosity that was characteristic of Luke.

Recipient: Janelle Hill, Business Management BCIT Business Operations Management Faculty Achievement Award An annual award established in 1984, this award is presented to a graduate of BCIT’s Business Operations Management program demonstrating high academic achievement as well as outstanding leadership skills.

BCIT International Business Management Faculty Achievement Award An annual award established in 1999 by the department is presented to a graduate of the program.

Recipients: Simarjeetsingh Manmohansingh Dhillon, International Business Management Simon Olthof, International Business Management BCIT International Success Awards An annual award established in 2007 by the BCIT International Business Services Department.

Recipient: Stuart Barnes Rodriguez, Business Information Technology Management BCIT Marketing Communication Industry Project Award An award established in 2013 to recognize the top student team that developed an integrated marketing communications campaign for a real industry client. This project is part of their capstone course where all of the Marketing Communications students develop a comprehensive marketing campaign and compete for the client’s business with a pitch presentation.

This is a peernominated award for Marketing Communications students that have demonstrated exceptional leadership through course work, as well as program and institute initiatives.

Recipient: Ruby Dale, Marketing Management – Marketing Communications BCIT Marketing Communication Student Team Player Award An annual award established in 2014 by the department. This is a peernominated award for Marketing Communications students that have demonstrated an exceptional ability to foster a feeling of camaraderie among members of a team, enabling the team to cooperate and work well together.

Recipient: Tamiya Kabatoff, Marketing Management – Marketing Communications BCIT Marketing Communications Award in Honour of Carroll Nelson An endowment established in 2006 in honour of Carroll Nelson, a BCIT teaching faculty member for 25 years and recipient of the 2005 BCIT Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award. She was a former program head for Marketing Communications and Direct Response Marketing and in 1985, worked on re-branding the marketing curriculum and initiated a hugely successful internship program. In 1998, Carroll introduced the first Direct Marketing program in Canada and educated, challenged, mentored, and led her students to be the best they can be. Her success is reflected in the widely acknowledged superior performance of BCIT Marketing graduates.

STUDENT AWARDS CELEBRATION 2022

BCIT Marketing Management Business Consulting Award An endowment established in 2010 by the BCIT Marketing Management program with contributions from external industry partners who support the BCIT Marketing Management business consulting program. The income earned on the fund each year will provide a graduating achievement award for a student in the Professional Sales, Entrepreneurship, Professional Real Estate or Tourism Management options of BCIT’s Marketing Management Diploma of Technology program.

Recipient: Geoffrey Magrill, Marketing Management – Tourism Management BCIT Professional Sales Student Silent Auction Award An annual award established in 2010 by the department.

Recipient: Jordan Lee, Marketing Management – Professional Sales Brian Devereaux Memorial Award An annual award established in 2016 by the Canadian Materials Handling and Distribution Society (CMHDS). The award is in memory of Brian Devereaux, a popular and long-time member of the society.

Brian worked at the London Drugs Distribution Centre for more than 40 years and shaped the company significantly during that time. He will be remembered by many for his humor and willingness to freely give of his time to mentor others in the logistics industry.

Recipient: Daniele Aoyama, Business Operations Management British Columbia Institute for Studies in International Trade Award for Excellence in Studies in International Trade An endowment established in 2006.

Recipient: Thi Thanh Thao Vu, International Business Management Building Owners and Managers Association of BC, Gerry Thomson Memorial Award An endowment established in 1996. In 2005, the award was amended to honour the memory of BOMA’s past president, Gerry Thomson, who also managed BOMA’s education program, resulting in the establishment of this endowment with BCIT. Recipient: Alexey Nekhoroshev, Marketing Management – Professional Real Estate Chartered Professionals in Human Resources Award An annual award established in 2004. The Chartered Professionals in Human Resources, committed to providing leadership in HR excellence, is the foremost professional association for those involved in the business of people.

Recipient: Briana Smirfitt-Brown, Human Resource Management, Advanced Placement Degree/Diploma Entry Columbia Plastics Ltd. Award An annual award established in 1995.

Recipient: Cole Hebert, Business Operations Management CPA Education Foundation (R. Glynn Spelliscy) Award An annual award established in 1995 by the CMA to honour Glynn Spelliscy for his contributions to the society. He held many positions provincially and is a former national president.

Recipient: Janak Basi, Accounting

CPA Education Foundation (William B. Hards Memorial) Award An annual award established in 1977 by the CMA and renamed to honour William Hards in 1994 to commemorate his years of service to the society. The William Hards award is presented to a graduating Financial Management Diploma student who has demonstrated very strong academic performance and a course of conduct benefiting other students in the Diploma program, and in addition has indicated an intention to enroll in both the BTech and CPA programs.

Recipient: Sherwin Rahmanian, Accounting CPA Education Foundation Awards for Bachelor of Technology An annual award established in 1999. The Chartered Professional Accountants’ Education Foundation’s (CPAEF) goal is to advance accounting education through scholarships for students, sponsoring relevant and practical research, and bringing together academics in BC. The recipients of this award should demonstrate strong academic achievement and community service.

Recipients: Helen Priskila Utama, Bachelor of Accounting Karen Anne Keffer, Bachelor of Accounting The CPABC Vancouver Chapter Award An annual award established in 2016 by the CPABC Vancouver Chapter to a graduating student intending to become a CPA who has demonstrated volunteerism or leadership in the community.

Recipient: Selena Chiang, Accounting Fasken Martineau DuMoulin Award in Human Resource Management An endowment established in 2000, Fasken Martineau is one of the world’s leading international business law and litigation firms.

Recipient: Alex Nguyen, Human Resource Management Forge Properties Awards An annual award established in 2016 by Forge Properties, this award is presented to a graduate of BCIT’s Accounting or Architectural and Building Technology program.

Recipient: Gabrielle Bothe, Accounting Glenna Urbshadt Award An endowment established in 2005 by BCIT Marketing Professional Sales program head, Glenna Urbshadt.

Recipient: Ariana Dehzad, Marketing Management – Professional Sales Glenna Urbshadt International Education Award An endowment established in 2019 by former BCIT Marketing Professional Sales program head, Glenna Urbshadt.

Recipient: Josef Hawboldt, Marketing Management – Professional Sales Go Sales Award An annual award established in 2022 for a graduate of the Professional Sales program.

Recipient: Daniel Morissette, Marketing Management – Professional Sales

Jill Vassallo Memorial Award An endowment established in 2009 by faculty member Dr. Kevin Wainwright and RG Properties. In 2011, the endowment was renamed in memory of Jill Vassallo, a BCIT Bachelor of Business Administration student and graduate of Marketing Communications (2010). Jill passed away from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on September 7, 2010, the day she would have begun classes in the BBA. Jill was just shy of her 20th birthday. It had been her fourth battle with the disease which first emerged at the age of four. Known for her organizational and people skills, the foundational skills she learned at BCIT helped Jill also learn the importance of working with others. And while she enjoyed team management, her ability to be a leader was one of her greatest attributes.

Jill lived spontaneously and never let a day go by where she didn’t live life to the fullest. During her long illness, Jill maintained a blog and kept connected with family, friends, and classmates. She was an inspiring individual and this endowment is dedicated to honour her spirit and her life. “I can laugh at anything and I’m always smiling.”—Jillian Vassallo Recipient: John Oxley, Bachelor of Business Administration Jim and Isabel Verner Memorial Award An annual award originally established in 1984 by former faculty member, Jim Verner, in memory of his wife. When Jim passed away in 2004, his family renamed the award to honour him as well.

Recipient: Riley Hayles, Business Management Joe Ribic Memorial Award An endowment was established in 1998 in memory of Joe Ribic, Program Head, Applied Operations Management, who passed away January 10, 1998.

Recipient: Antonio Li, Business Operations Management Konica Minolta Professional Sales Award An annual award established in 2018 for a graduate of the Professional Sales program.

Recipient: Brent Murray, Marketing Management – Professional Sales Laurie Jack Memorial Award An endowment established in 1977 by family, friends, colleagues, and the BCIT Student Association in memory of Laurie Jack, former president of the Student Association. The annual interest provides awards to students who have represented the student body at BCIT. Recipient: Jordan Ywork, Marketing Management – Professional Sales Leavitt Machinery Achievement of Excellence Awards Annual awards established in 2004. Leavitt Machinery, a proud employer of many BCIT Grads over the years, acknowledges the hard work and determination it takes to be successful at BCIT. Leavitt Machinery sells, rents, leases, and provides aftermarket support for materials handling and high reach equipment. With branches throughout, BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Washington, and Oregon, Leavitt Machinery will continue to lean on BCIT Grads for growth.

Luke Fahrmann Memorial Award An annual award established in 2017 to honour Luke Fahrmann, a 2016 graduate of the Television and Video Production program, whose sudden passing was a great shock to all who knew him. What started as a onetime donation, initiated by faculty and students at BCIT, has grown into a permanent endowment, allowing Luke’s legacy to live on. This award will be presented to two students as they commence their second year of study who embody Luke’s raw passion and unbridled enthusiasm for photography and digital storytelling.

Recipient: Min Woo Lee, Television & Video Production New Car Dealers of BC Award in Honour of Julia Blockberger An endowment established in 1995 by the New Car Dealer’s Association of BC in honour of Julia’s 28 years of support of their organization, including 12 years as show manager of the International Auto Show.

Recipient: Chantal French, Marketing Management – Tourism Management OMNI Television Award in Design Essentials An endowment established in 2010. Omni Television is a leading provider of ethno-cultural television programming.

Recipient: Bronwyn Handling, Communication Design Essentials Peter Thomson Memorial Award An annual award established by Dr. Robert Gayton and family in memory of their close friend Peter Thomson. Peter was the director of the BCIT Venture Centre since 1986 who passed away suddenly in October 2007.

In his honour, the Centre was renamed the Peter Thomson Centre for Venture Development. This award was created to recognize the achievements of graduates who encompass the ideas that were at the heart of Peter Thomson’s vision to support and empower young entrepreneurs to create a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of entrepreneurial business.

Recipient: Noah Jensen, Marketing Management – Entrepreneurship Real Estate Institute of BC, Robert (Bob) Mikitka Memorial Award An endowment established in 1999. The REIBC is the only professional organization whose members come from every segment of the real estate community and across nine provincial chapters. Their mission is to advance and recognize excellence in education, knowledge, professional development, and business practices uniting all sectors of the real estate industry. Bob Mikitka worked as a real estate appraiser for 35 years and was very active in professional real estate organizations, serving for many years on several boards, culminating in the position of president of the Real Estate Institute of BC and chairman of the Real Estate Foundation of BC. Recipient: Shun Er Tan, Marketing Management – Professional Real Estate Robert K. Wallace Award An endowment established in 2013 by the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver and friends and colleagues of Robert Wallace in honour of his retirement. The annual interest provides a graduating achievement award for a student from the Professional Real Estate program.

Recipient: Merrick Sandhu, Marketing Management – Professional Real Estate

Robert Malcolm Memorial Award An endowment established in 2011 by the brother of the late Robert Malcolm. Mr. Malcolm was a long-time newscaster who anchored the top-rated BCTV Night Final newscast from 1972-1991. He passed away in August 2010 at the age of 69. He began his career in radio, including CKDA in Victoria and CFUN and CKNW in Vancouver before taking over the helm of Night Final. He had interests in writing, directing, and broadcasting and did some lecturing and mentoring of students at BCIT. Recipient: Random Havelka, Television & Video Production Robert Nason Award for Excellence in Direction of a Television and Video Production An award established in 2017 to honour and celebrate Robert Nason, one of BCIT’s outstanding and most long-serving faculty members. Rob has been with BCIT’s Broadcast and Media Communications program for 50 years. Over this time, he has been an invaluable source of knowledge and skill, inspiring hundreds of students as they pursue careers in the area of television and video production. BCIT is forever grateful to Rob for his commitment and dedication to this program and BCIT students.

Recipient: Mansour Bani, Television & Video Production Royal Canadian Legion Invictus Award An annual graduating achievement award established in 2012 by the Royal Canadian Legion Foundation (BC Yukon Command) to recognize a graduating Degree program student who is, or was, a member of the Canadian Armed Forces and has participated in the Royal Canadian Legion Military Skills Conversion program at BCIT. The award recipient has demonstrated high academic standing while at BCIT, as well as exceptional leadership, achievement, and service within their local community.

Recipient: Fraser Clarke, International Business Management – Global Supply Spicers Canada Award An endowment established in 2005.

Recipient: Seyedeh Niloofar Bastan, Graphic Communication Technology Management Sunbelt Rentals Grad Achievement Award An annual award established in 2021 for a graduate of the Professional Sales program.

Recipient: Shima Golchiniraei, Marketing Management – Professional Sales Wesgroup Equipment Graduating Achievement Awards An annual achievement award established in 2019.

Recipients: Caitlin Vania, Marketing Management – Professional Sales Alexander McCarthy, Marketing Management – Professional Sales Westkey Graphics Award An annual award established in 2007. For more than 50 years, Westkey Graphics, a leading manufacturer of printed products, has manufactured and distributed business forms and commercial/promotional products throughout Western Canada and Northwestern United States.

Recipient: Takshita Kumar, Graphic Communication Technology Management

William (Bill) Gillis Memorial Award in Business Management Studies An endowment established in 2005 by Jim Gillis, Dianne Devlin, and David Gillis in memory of their father, Bill Gillis, a pioneer in the BC lumber industry and founder of Mill & Timber Products Ltd. Bill was a business and community leader, as well as an environmentalist. In 2002, he was inducted into the Fraser River Hall of Fame in recognition of his significant and noteworthy contributions to the health and sustainability of the Fraser River.

Recipient: Ryo Nakagawa, Business Management Zabierek Award of Innovation An annual award established in 2022 by Arek and Brian Zabierek. The Zabierek Twins graduated from BCIT in 2017 which allowed them to gain practical experience for the sales industry, which they quickly took into their own entrepreneurial journey. The Zabierek Award of Innovation is awarded to a student who provided innovation and creativity while maintaining a strong GPA in the Professional Sales program.

Recipient: Thomas Donnelly, Marketing Management – Professional Sales

DEAN’S GRADUATING AWARDS Selected by the Dean, these awards are presented to students who have demonstrated a positive attitude, leadership, effective team behaviour, and participation in BCIT and community activities, as well as outstanding academic achievement.

Recipient: Spencer Stevens, 3D Modeling, Art and Animation BCIT 3D Modeling, Art and Animation Award An annual award established by the department.

Dermot was a longstanding employee of the Real Estate Council of British Columbia who passed away in February 2008. He served with distinction, at all times demonstrating a professional manner embraced with high ethical standards, a concern for “what is right” and a commitment to education as a key element for creating a better future. He was a professional in the field of real estate – an individual committed to ensuring the real estate fraternity in BC would set a standard for service to the public that the citizens of BC could point to with pride. Brian was program head of CST Technical Programming who died suddenly on April 13, 2002. He was a respected professional, colleague, and friend to many at BCIT and a talented instructor and mentor to his students. He had tremendous pride in the accomplishments of his students.

Centerprise is a Victoria, BC management consulting firm serving Canadian Financial Institutions and their suppliers since 2008. With strong BCIT ties (founder Mike O’Shaughnessy is a double grad of CST 1986 and BTech 2013) Centerprise desires to “pay it forward” by supporting Computer Systems Technology students showing promise in technology and entrepreneurship.

Award An annual award established in 2019 by Mike Burton. Mike is the CEO of Superion Inc. which is a managed IT services provider based in Surrey, BC. In presenting this award, he is thrilled to give back and lend a helping hand to the technical minds that will shape the future. Recipient: Brenden Louie, Bachelor of Architectural Science Association of BC Forest Professionals ForesTrust, Wayne Cochrane Memorial Award An endowment established in 1999 in memory of Association member Wayne Cochrane. The Association of BC Forest Professionals is responsible for registering and regulating British Columbia’s professional foresters and forest technologists and is the largest professional forestry association in Canada.

The Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC provides awards to students in ASTTBC recognized technology programs through the ASTTBC Foundation. BC Building Envelope Council Education Foundation Awards An award established in 2008. The BCBEC Foundation was established in 2006 from a surplus in the BC Building Envelope Council operating budget. BCBEC is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a platform for proponents of the building industry to discuss issues and exchange information on building envelope issues. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide scholarships for post-secondary students and apprentices who excel in the study of building envelope design, construction, and technology.

BC Hydro Award An annual award established in 2008. BC Hydro’s primary business activities are the generation and distribution of electricity. Recipient: Junko Fujiwara, Bachelor of Technology in Construction Management Bennett Land Surveying Ltd. Award An annual award established in 2005. Bennett Land Surveying Ltd. is a legal, engineering, and topographic survey firm of BC Land Surveyors, and has been active in the Lower Mainland of BC for over 40 years. Their projects range from surveys of individual lots for homeowners to complex residential and commercial projects.

Recipient: Cole Barnett, Geomatics Engineering Technology Binnie Consulting Ltd., Robert Binnie Memorial Award An annual award established in 1994 in memory of the founder of R.F. Binnie & Associates. It was then re-established as an endowment in 2006.

Both worked closely with members of the Bentall family.

Recipient: Chulwoo Kim, Civil Engineering Technology Darwin and Sara Lamont Appreciation Award An annual award established in 2018 by Binnie Consulting Ltd. in honour of Darwin Lamont, a BCIT alumnus dedicated to serving the engineering industry and mentoring BCIT graduates during more than 46 years as a Binnie employee. This award is given to a student graduating with a diploma and recognized by faculty as a deserving student in the Civil Engineering program.

Dixie Hudson Excellence in Design Award The Dixie Hudson Graduating Achievement Award was founded in 2018 with the generous donations from her friends, family and co-workers.

Dixie Hudson founded the part-time Interior Design program at BCIT in 1979 and continued to pour her heart and soul into improving the program and the experience for the students right up to her passing in 2018. This award will be given to a student who excels in leadership, creativity, and design.

Interior Designers Institute of BC Award An annual award established in 2018. The IDIBC Student Award is given annually to a deserving fourth-year student based on their final Capstone Project. The criteria for the award is the demonstration of IDIBC’s Vision Statement: “To benefit public health, safety and welfare, contribute to the enhancement of the environment and increase the perception, appreciation, and value of design in the community.”

Anderson & Associates A graduating achievement award for the School of Construction and the Environment, specific to the Geomatics program (Diploma or Degree).

Recipient: Konrad Balzer, Geomatics Engineering Technology Ledcor 60th Anniversary Award An endowment established in 2008 to commemorate 60 years of construction excellence. Employee-owned, with a broad portfolio throughout North America, the Ledcor Group of Companies was founded in 1947 with roots firmly planted in the oil patch. Ledcor expanded geographically and diversified into the building and industrial sectors, with six construction divisions: Commercial Building, Heavy Civil, Industrial, Mining, Pipeline, and Telecommunications.

Victor Heath Memorial Award in Fish, Wildlife and Recreation An annual award established in 2008. Victor Heath was a department head who was extremely proud of establishing the Forestry Training program at BCIT at its conception prior to it changing and evolving to the Fish, Wildlife and Recreation program. He was also one of the founding members of the Pioneers of BCIT. Recipient: Ahyun Suh, Architectural and Building Technology John Salisbury Memorial Award An endowment established in 2011 by Mr. John Salisbury. John was a long-time resident of Pender Harbour, BC on the Sunshine Coast.

He passed away in September 2011 at the age of 85. It was the education he received at BCIT taking night school courses in mining during the 1970s and his great memories of former Mining instructor Moose Manifold that were his prime reasons for establishing the John Salisbury Endowment to support students in BCIT’s Mineral Exploration and Mining Technology program.

Recipient: Ramtin Shirmohammadi, Mineral Exploration and Mining Technology Steve and Dorothy Sweet Memorial Award An endowment was established in 2013 by the estate of Mrs. Dorothy Sweet, a former BCIT employee. The annual interest provides a First Year Scholarship and Graduating Award to a student in the Fish, Wildlife and Recreation program.

Architectural Institute of British Columbia Award in Architecture Established in 1966, this annual award recognizes outstanding achievement in the graduating class. The Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) is an independent, professional self-regulatory body established in 1920 by provincial statute: the Architects Act. In the interest of the public, the AIBC regulates the profession of architecture through a responsive regulatory framework. The AIBC provides a range of regulatory and outreach programs, including the Student Affiliate program, which supports the next generation of architects and architectural technologists.

Reg Ridsdale developed the BCIT program for the Electronics Department in 1964, and was department head until his retirement in 1982. The Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) provides awards to students in ASTTBC recognized technology programs through the ASTTBC Foundation. BC Hydro Awards An annual award established in 2008. BC Hydro’s primary business activities are the generation and distribution of electricity. It is the third-largest electric utility in Canada, and endeavours to provide energy solutions to its customers in an environmentally and socially responsible way by balancing British Columbians’ energy needs with the concerns of the environment.

Recipient: Andrea Louise Chua, Mechanical Engineering Technology – Mechanical Design David C. Smith Memorial Achievement Award An endowment was established in 2015 by Wayne Shalagan in memory of David C. Smith to provide an annual graduating achievement award to a student in the CNC Machinist Technician program. David Smith was a Vancouver-based machinist who was passionate about his craft.

After running several machine shops in Vancouver, he subsequently set up a small machine shop on his own, performing intricate highquality, specialized machining and related services. He was well-known throughout Vancouver and beyond for making specialty parts and solving technical problems associated with rare aircraft and motor vehicles.

Mr. Smith was intelligent, hardworking, creative, and an extremely capable problem solver. The machinist and related trades were his passion. In addition, he was very generous with his knowledge, skills, and time, and believed in sharing these talents and gifts with others.

David Smith died December 16, 2013 of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

This endowment is intended to help facilitate other machinists to rise to their potential and to contribute as David Smith did.

He pursued and was dedicated to numerous charitable, fraternal, and community interests, including Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of BC and Yukon and Chair of the Vancouver Branch of the Engineering Institute of Canada.

CIPHI, John A. Stringer Memorial Award An endowment established in 1976 by Mrs. Mabel Stringer in memory of her late husband who was an executive member of the CIPHI and a strong supporter of BCIT’s Public Health Inspector program.

Recipient: Youngwoo Kim, Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Health Edna Ladner Memorial Award An endowment established in 2006 through the estate of Edna Ladner.

Edna was an ardent researcher of local history and respected author of a book about pioneer life on the Fraser Delta. Her personal account of her mother, who was a nurse and had married into the pioneering Ladner farming and fish-canning dynasty after whom the Delta community is named, has been incorporated into a book that has been used nationally to demonstrate a comparative model of early nursing practices. This award is for graduates who have completed BCIT’s Specialty Nursing, Emergency Nursing—Combined Emergency/Critical Care Option.

Recipient: Heather Tone, Bachelor of Science in Specialty Nursing John K. Soutter Food Technology Achievement Award An endowment established in 1994 by former Food Technology faculty member, John Soutter. John’s original contribution of $3,000 was $100 for each year he worked at BCIT (1967-1997).

Recipient: Yingying Xu, Food Technology Kathy Martin Pediatric Memorial Award An endowment established in 2020 in memory of Kathy Martin, a faculty member of the School of Health Sciences.

Recipient: Jenna Lew-Cooke, Bachelor of Science in Nursing Lesley M.R. Wiebe Humanitarian Award An endowment established in1986 by the husband and friends of Lesley Wiebe, a dedicated nurse who passed away in September 1985.

Recipient: Kelsey Winters, Bachelor of Science in Nursing LifeLabs Medical Laboratory Services Awards for Clinical Excellence An annual award established in 1966. LifeLabs provides laboratory testing services, which help physicians and other healthcare providers in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease and illness in patients.

Recipients: Sie Ngar Charlene Chen, Medical Laboratory Science Janet Huang, Medical Laboratory Science Lily Bruce Summers Memorial Award An endowment established in 2007 by the family of Lily Bruce Summers.

The fund fulfills her wish to be part of the nursing community, where nurses care about and care for others, which is a philosophy she lived by. Also, because Lily felt strongly that living in Canada provided a good life for her and her family, the fund is a way for her to give back to her community and her country. The recipient of this award is encouraged in their pursuit of becoming a part of the nursing community and wished every success.

Linda Herman Award Emergency Nursing An endowment established in 2017 by Linda’s family, colleagues, and friends. Linda was generous of spirit, caring, and compassionate and would light a room with her warmth, her humour, and her razor-sharp wit. She lived her life aligned with her purpose and would proclaim that she had an amazing career as a nurse, teacher/ mentor and health care leader. Linda trained to be a nurse in Chatham Ontario and began her career at Sick Kid’s in Toronto. She found her passion in nursing as an Emergency nurse and worked at Langley Memorial, MSA in Abbotsford, and St Paul’s during the AID’s crisis. Linda moved into her first leadership position as Head nurse at St. Paul’s and subsequently Lions Gate Hospital. Linda had a provincial impact on hospitals and health care working for the Ministry of Health. Linda finished her career as a health care leader working in quality and improvement, and as a Director at Chilliwack hospital, Maple Ridge hospital, and finally at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. One of the highlights of Linda’s career was teaching in the Emergency Nursing Diploma program at BCIT. Linda loved to mentor and encourage those who also had a passion for emergency nursing. Before Linda’s passing, Linda set the criteria for this annual financial award. The award will be granted to a student in BCIT’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program who has “the passion and the light in their eyes for emergency nursing.

Recipient: Megan Wong, Bachelor of Science in Nursing Mabel and Arnet Pentland First Year Achievement Awards An endowment was established in 1991 with matching funds from the Government of British Columbia. The interest from this endowment provides annual bursaries and first year achievement awards to students in Prosthetics and Orthotics. Mr. Pentland was a former member of the BCIT Prosthetics and Orthotics Advisory Committee.

Recipients: Calista Branter, Prosthetics and Orthotics Lauren Hum, Prosthetics and Orthotics Nicole Holdcroft, Prosthetics and Orthotics Erin Scott, Prosthetics and Orthotics Morgan Wankling, Prosthetics and Orthotics Margaret Neylan Memorial Achievement Award An annual award established in 2010 in memory of Margaret Neylan, former Department Head of Nursing, then Associate Dean of Nursing at BCIT. Margaret passed away in March 2005. Her life was dedicated to family, health care, and education. She pioneered the development of numerous nursing programs and, in retirement, dedicated her time to improving care for seniors.

Recipient: Judy Condotti, Bachelor of Science in Nursing Stemcell Technologies Award An annual award established in 2017. This graduating achievement award recognizes an outstanding student in the Biotechnology program within BCIT’s School of Health Sciences. STEMCELL Technologies Inc. is a biotechnology company based in Vancouver that develops specialty cell culture media, cell isolation systems, and accessory products for life science research. Driven by science and a passion for quality, STEMCELL supports the advancement of scientific research around the world with our catalogue of more than 2,000 cell biology research tools.

Yvonne Aydon Memorial Award An endowment established in 2016 by husband, family, and friends, in loving memory of Yvonne Aydon, a dedicated learner, practitioner, leader, and mentor in the field of Electro neurophysiology. Yvonne was truly gifted, and her lifelong dedication to her work made a difference in the field and to BCIT graduates and programs. This award is presented to a graduate of BCIT’s Electroneurophysiology diploma program who demonstrates leadership qualities.

Radion Laboratories Ltd. dba Bowers Medical Supply Award An annual award established in 2004. The Bowers Medical award is presented to a student who has demonstrated consistent academic excellence, personal courage, and relentless perseverance. In 1972, BCIT alumnus F.E. (Ted) Bowers founded Bowers Medical. For more than 40 years, Bowers Medical has remained a national company that is family owned and operated. As the CEO, Mr. Bowers has always mandated the company to deliver the highest quality of healthcare solutions that best serve his fellow Canadians. Basic values such as dedication, hard work, and intellectual discipline are direct reflections of Mr. Bowers’ own personal traits.

SCHOOL OF TRANSPORTATION ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS ∆ GRADUATING ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS These awards are presented to students who received outstanding marks in specific courses in their final term(s) or who have demonstrated a combination of high academic standing, leadership, service, and all-round achievement, as selected by faculty.

Recipient: Oliver Wackenreuther, Bachelor of Technology in Technology Management BCIT International Success Awards An annual award established in 2007 by the BCIT International Business Services Department.

Recipient: Afsal Shamsudeen Sainudeen, Airport Operations Brett Loftus Memorial Award An endowment established in 2011 in memory of Brett Loftus who was an exceptional alumnus of the BCIT Airline and Flight Operations Commercial Pilot program and a flight instructor with Pacific Flying Club (PFC) based in Boundary Bay. He was killed July 6, 2011 in a plane crash north of Harrison Lake. As a Flight Instructor with PFC, Brett touched the lives of many BCIT students and staff in an extremely positive way.

Recipient: Damil Djaksigulov, Airline and Flight Operations Commercial Pilot (Fixed Wing) Geoff Smulders Memorial Scholarship An endowment established in 2005 by the family and friends of Geoff Smulders, who died on April 22, 2005 in an airplane crash caused by mechanical failure. He was working as a pilot for Nav Air Charter, Inc. at the time. Geoff loved flying, sports, and partying. He was not an armchair observer of life—he got out there and lived it.

Recipient: Riley Graf, Airline and Flight Operations Commercial Pilot (Fixed Wing) Hong Mar Memorial Award An endowment established in 2012 in memory of Hong Mar, one of Canada’s pioneering bush pilots who served Canada’s northern communities before a plane crash took his life in 1967 at age 44. This scholarship, generously endowed by Dr. Yosef Wosk and family and friends of Mr. Mar, is a tribute to his legacy, and to his fellow bush pilots who devoted their lives to a profession that remains exceptionally dangerous and challenging.
