After decades of compiling facts, figures, and records about high school athletics, my file research has been cut in half thanks to the brilliance of prep historian Leland Barclay. Barclay has just published a high school sport buff’s dream; the Almanac of Arkansas High School Football. For decades, this kind of information has been available for professional and college football teams, but there was no compiled reference source for high school sports. This book is unique. The book not only recaps the current season, but as a special bonus will allow its readers the opportunity to recap the high school seasons dating back to 1955. That includes conference standings, All-Star selections and state playoff results. Remember the Little Rock Central-Little Rock Hall Thanksgiving Day classics? You can take a stroll back into the past with the Tigers and the Warriors. Barton won four straight Class A state championships, and played in four consecutive title games. What was the consecutive win streak the Bears set? Barclay’s book has the answer. Barclay’s depth of knowledge and attention to detail makes this a must-read. N f  E The state of Arkansas is one of only a few states without a professional sports team to capture the fancy of sports fanatics, which probably explains the love affair that the state has with high school football. The beauty of high school football is the fervor and passion that the players display every autumn Friday night across the state. High school football is the last step where the players simply play the game for fun. It is to the players that this book is dedicated. Naturally, thanks are in order to the fine newspapers across the state that cover their area teams with relentless pursuit. Newspapers that were helpful in the research for this book include the Southwest Times Record of Fort Smith, Northwest Arkansas Times of Fayetteville, Log Cabin Democrat of Conway, Courier-Democrat of Russellville, Morning News of Springdale, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette of Little Rock, Jonesboro Sun, Pine Bluff Commercial, Texarkana Gazette and Malvern Daily Record. Bryant completed the ninth perfect season in the 37-year history of the bigschool playoff era with a 21-7 win over familiar conference foe North Little Rock at War Memorial Stadium for the Class 7A crown. The game marked the seventh between the two 7A-Central teams in the past four years with Bryant owning wins in three straight that began in the 2019 state championship game. “This is the seventh time we’ve played them in four years,” Bryant head coach Buck James said. “We know each other very well. Brothers fight. It’s not enemies that fight, it’s brothers that fight. Those guys understand what it’s like, and they play against each other every Friday night. To do what they’ve done, I have a lot of respect for them. Getting here four years in a row takes a lot of courage.” Bryant finished 13-0 and applied the Arkansas Activities Association’s 35point Sportsmanship Rule and the continuously running clock in 10 of the victories, including the first eight games of the season. In a rare showing of both offense and defense, the Hornets outscored its opponents by a 559-114 margin which included 396-58 in the first half. The 445 -point scoring margin is the most in the state’s largest classification since Springdale in 2005. “It was confidence,” James said. “I think we had confidence all year. I think we did some things all year. This team only gave up 60 points, two of them

Searcy won its first official football state championship with the formula that worked two weeks in a row against the best from the 6A-West in beating Benton, 28-27, for the Class 6A title at War Memorial Stadium. It was the first appearance in the state championship game for Searcy since losing to Crossett in 1984. “It’s kind of surreal,” Searcy head coach Mark Kelley said. “We’re excited, but it will be a couple of days before it soaks in.” Searcy claims a state championship in 1933 along with Russellville and El Dorado long before the modern playoff era. Searcy was 10-0 in 1933 with wins that included small schools like Gurdon, Lonoke, Cotton Plant, Walnut Ridge, and Augusta. In 2019, the Lions had to beat the top two teams in the 6A-West in successive weeks to claim that title of best in Searcy history. That included a 50-38 win over Greenwood, winners of the last two Class 6A titles and nine in all, in the semifinals. Searcy racked up 740 yards offense but needed two fourth-quarter interceptions by the defense to hold on. “They’ve done really well, just like last week,” Kelley said. “We came out and played really fast offensively, then against a well-coached team they’ll make it difficult in the second half. That’s what they did. They stayed on the field with their offense, but we made just enough plays to get the win.”

Pulaski Academy scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half and set single-season records with a 63-21 win over rival Little Rock Christian for the Class 5A championship at War Memorial Stadium. Pulaski Academy set single-season state records with 790 points and 9,062 offensive yards for the season. Pulaski Academy scored nine offensive touchdowns and rolled up 766 offensive yards, also a championshipgame record, on 86 offensive plays in the championship game. The Bruins began the season with an 84-64 win over Class 7A Springdale Har -Ber, setting a single-game record with 1,025 yards. Behind every record-setting offense, of course, is a record-setting quarterback. Quarterback Braden Bratcher set state single-game records against Har-Ber with 764 yards passing and exactly 1,000 yards of offense with 136 more rushing yards. He threw nine touchdown passes and ran for one. He kept it up to the end for the Bruins. In the championship tilt, Bratcher earned Most Valuable Player honors with 513 yards and five touchdowns in the air on 38-of-49 efficiency. He also ran 13 times for 125 yards and a touchdown, Little Rock Christian managed to stay close for a half but could not overcome four turnovers, which Pulaski Academy turned into 22 points. “You get turnovers, those are game changers,” Pulaski Academy head

Offensive touchdowns scored by Pulaski Academy for the season with 372 first downs coach Kevin Kelley said. “On all levels of the game, you win 80 percent of the games if you get the most turnovers. We turned it over more than they did last time. This time, it switched over.” Little Christian stunned Pulaski Academy, 63-61, in a 5A-Central game in October when Isaiah Hankins connected on a 31-yard field goal with four seconds left. It ended Pulaski Academy’s 63-game conference winning streak that dated back to 2009 and gave Little Rock Christian a cushy road to the finals with wins over a third seed and two four seeds. The Warriors’ win made it two in a row over Pulaski Academy after Little Rock Christian also defeated the Bruins, 50-38, in the state championship in 2018 that ended a four-year string of state titles. Pulaski Academy ended it’s twogame losing streak to its rivals, though, with the record-setting offensive

performance and a dominating defensive showing. “I tried to caution our team on not worrying about beating Christian but playing your best in the state championship,” Kelley said. “Winning the state championship is our only goal. To be able to come and play them in it is a little nicer. If we can play as good as we can play, it’s not about who you play. We played our best game our last game.” Pulaski Academy held Little Rock Christian, which was undefeated entering the title game, to season-lows of 201 yards and two offensive touchdowns. Up just, 35-21, at the half, Clay James intercepted a pass for Pulaski Academy on Little Rock Christian’s first play of the second half. That started a landslide. Pulaski Academy scored on four of its five second-half possessions and forced the Warriors into three turnovers over the final two quarters and to just 50 yards of offense. “When you’re playing Pulaski Academy, you have to play perfectly execution start to finish,” Little Rock Christian head coach Eric Cohu said. “We didn’t make enough plays. You cannot lose the turnover battle.”

PULASKI ROBINSON 56, SHILOH CHRISTIAN 28 Attendance 4,901 • Partly Cloudy 45 degrees • Kickoff 7 p.m. • Time 3:05 DECEMBER 13, LITTLE ROCK — The Robinson Senators methodically ascended to the top of Class 4A. They reached their crescendo with a flurry of scores in a 56-28 win over Shiloh Christian’s high-powered offense for the Class 4A championship at War Memorial Stadium. Robinson lost in the championship game last year, 28-0, to Arkadelphia in miserable weather. The year before, the Senators lost in the semifinals. In 2016, they lost in the third round. The before that, they lost in the second round. In 2014, they fell in the opening round. “Six years in a row, I think we’ve gotten one game further,” Robinson head coach Todd Eskola said. “Last year, one of the parents looked at me and said we’ve done better by one game so next year we’re going to win it. They were prophetic.” The championship is the first for Robinson since 1980 when the Senators beat DeQueen, 28-6, under Bob Goodloe with Jim Eskola, Todd’s dad, serving as an assistant coach. Todd Eskola was a ball boy on that ’80 team. “It’s overwhelming,” Eskola said. “The community, it means so much to them. They’ve wanted it for so long.” The rise to the championship may been methodical, but losing in the manner in which they did in 2018 fueled the fire for the Senators. “We were here last year and it didn’t go good,” Eskola said. “Our promise to our kids was that we were going to attack for four quarters. If we didn’t win, we didn’t win but we were going to attack offensively and defensively.”

Harding Academy wiped out a onepoint halftime deficit with a four scores in the third quarter in a dominating half to win the Class 3A title with a 51-26 win over Osceola at War Memorial Stadium. The state championship is the seventh for the Wildcats but just the second to go 15-0 along with the 2002 team. “This is only the second time in Harding Academy history to go 15-0,” said Harding Academy head coach Neil Evans. “We’ve had some 14-0 teams and some other undefeated teams, but this is only the second 15-0 team. It’s pretty special.” Evans is the fourth head coach to guide Harding Academy to a state title along with Bill Barden, Tommy Shoemaker and Roddy Mote. “I’m in a long line of people that’s led these guys to this type of heights,” Evans said. “I’m blessed to be surrounded by great people.” The Wildcats did it behind a stout third quarter, gaining 165 yards of offense and scoring 24 unanswered points. Ben Sloan capped the opening drive of the third quarter with a 24-yard field goal for a 24-22 lead with 10:42 left in the quarter. Fordyce won its third state championship but first since winning consecutive titles in 1990 and 1991 with a 28-6 win over Junction City for the Class 2A title at War Memorial Stadium. Fordyce claims to be the oldest football program in the state, having started in 1904, and the only one with Redbugs as a mascot in the nation. There’s also the ghost of Bear Bryant, who was selected All-State twice for the Redbugs and played on the 1929 state champion that went 10-0 under Bob Cowan that gave up one touchdown all the season. Then there’s Jimmy ‘Red’ Parker, another revered coach who started his illustrious coaching career at Fordyce and coached the Redbugs to a 38-game winning streak from 1957 into 1961. Then there’s Jim Cox, who coached the Redbugs to the state championships in 1990 and 1991. “More than anything, I know it’s not me,” Fordyce head coach Tim Rodgers said. “To be a part of this community, it’s not about me. It’s about them. I thank the Lord that I get the opportunity to do that.” Rodgers was an assistant coach under Cox in 1990 and 1991. As the baseball coach, Rodgers guided the Redbugs to the state championship game in 2013, 2014 and 2015. “We went to the finals three years in a row and got beat three years in a row,” Rodgers said. “To be there three times and not win is tough. We both lost and were both in the same side. You’ve got to beat everybody to get there.” Junction City also defeated Fordyce, 14-12, in the regular season in a 2A-8 conference game by forcing two key turnovers; a fumble and an interception. In the rematch, Junction City committed five turnovers while Fordyce had just one. “I thought we moved the ball about as good as you can against Fordyce’s defense, but (five) turnovers against somebody like this that was it,” Junction City head coach Brad Smith said. “That’s what happened the first time.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Fordyce scored on Quartey Shelton’s 4yard run with 5:12 left in the half. On Junction City’s next possession, the game turned for good as Junction City was driving to tie the game when Fordyce’s Sam Allen forced a fumble and returned it 88 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead at the half. “They turned the ball over a couple of times, and we didn’t,” Rodgers said. “We made plays when we needed to. The first time, we didn’t make those plays. Tonight, we stepped up and made plays; that fumble return right before half and that pass play to get us down there to score the first half. Then the second half, we always talk about finishing ball games. They got close, we just stepped it up every time.” Junction City answered with a touchdown on Kyle Kidwell’s recovery in the end zone of teammates’ Jamal Johnson’s fumble and stopped Fordyce on its next possession. On the punt return, though, Mantrel Neal recovered a fumble, and Shelton scored the first of his two fourth-quarter touchdowns on a 9-yard run for a 22-6 lead. He added another on a 1-yard score to set the final.

Bryant walloped up-start Bentonville West in the semifinal, the Wolverines to just 113 yards and eight first downs. North Little Rock went on the road and beat previously

undefeated Bentonville, 42-24, behind Brandon Thomas, who ran for 153 yards and two scores. In the second round, Bryant broke a 7-7 halftime tie with 35 points in the second half on the way to a 42-14 win against Fayetteville. North Little Rock beat Springdale Har-Ber, 49-21, with Thomas rushing for 219 yards and three scores. In the first round, Conway’s Nick McCuin threw four touchdown passes in a 63-21 win over Rogers. Little Rock Catholic scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to rally past Van Buren, 35-27. Searcy warmed up for the championship game with a 50-38 win against Greenwood, which was going for an unprece 6 A dented third three-peat. The Lions had 740 yards of offense on 94 plays with quarterback Bryce Dixon completing 30of-42 passes for 445 yards and five touchdowns. Marion Crockett caught 10 passes for 157 yards and touchdowns of 6, 54,

and 36 yards. Griffin Love had touchdown grabs of 61 and 43 yards. Benton also had plenty of offense in the semifinals, rolling up 569 yards in a 63-35 win over West Memphis. Garrett Brown completed 25-of-35 passes for 471 yards and six touchdowns. Dixon also threw five touchdown passes in the second-round 55-15 win over Pine Bluff. Benton squeezed past Jonesboro, 18-7, in the second round. The playoff thriller, regardless of classification, was Pine Bluff’s 49-48 four-overtime win in the first round. Elisha Taylor scored on a 9-yard run and Ethan White booted the extra-point kick for the win. Peyton Edwards ran six yards for a touchdown as Sheridan started the fourth over time with the score before missing the extra point. Regulation was tied 21-21 and each team scored in all four of the overtimes. Taylor ran for six touchdowns, including all four for Pine Bluff in the overtime periods. Pulaski Academy and Little Rock Christian rolled up big numbers in semifinal wins. Pulaski Academy downed Morril5 A ton, 68-41, behind 807 yards of offense. Braden Bratcher completed 28-of-55 passes for 529 yards and six touchdowns. Morrilton’s Jacolby Criswell ran for five touchdowns. Little Rock Christian defeated White Hall, 42-14, in the semifinals after Kendel Givens ran for 119 yards and five touchdowns. Pulaski Academy had to tough out a 28-21 win at Harrison in the second round. Harrison led, 21-20, after Gabe Huskey’s 32-yard scoring run with 54 seconds left in the third quarter. Pulaski Academy answered on Caleb Nichol’s 1-yard touchdown run with 10:18 left in the game. The biggest play, though, for Pulaski Academy was Bratcher’s 45-yard heave to Andrew Cobb, who caught the ball about the 5 among two defenders and scored, on the final play of the first half for a 20-7 lead.

Tyrique Jones ran for all four of Crossett’s touchdowns, and Crossett’s defense stopped a run around the left side just shy of the goal line on a two-point try after Kyren Harrison scored on a 3-yard run with 44 seconds left.

Harding Academy put up gigantic offensive numbers the entire playoffs and the semifinals were no different as the 3 A Wildcats beat Prescott, 49-21, with Stone Sheffield rushing for three scores, including a 1-yard run with 1:04 left in the first half that cracked a 14-14 tie. Jaheim Brown threw for 209 yards and a touchdown and ran for two to lead Fordyce to a 38-14 win over Salem in the 2 A semifinals. Junction City outlasted Gurdon, 44-37, in the other semifinal on Jakiron Cook’s 256-yard, four-touchdown performance. Brown threw three touchdown passes and ran for one in Fordyce’s 24-20 win over Hazen in the third round. Fordyce had no troubles in wins over Lavaca and Magazine in the first two rounds.

Pulaski Academy (3-2) lost to No. 8 LR Christian, 63-61 Bruins had 63-game conference winning streak snapped when Isiah Hankins kicked 38-yard field goal with four seconds left. Akeem Gilmore threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Kendel Givens with 1:22 left but Christian still trailed, 61-60, after a failed two-point conversion try. The Warriors’ Corey Platt recovered the onside kick at Pulaski Academy’s 48 and moved to the 21 to set up the field goal.

Vilonia’s Draven Smith needed just 11 carries to notch 313 yards and six touchdowns rushing in a 57-21 win over Beebe. Smith had scoring runs of 58 and 61 yards in the first quarter, 21, 46, and 19 in the second quarter before closing his effort with a 74-yard jaunt in the third quarter.
