SPOTLIGHT ON THE ARTS
New Mills Art Trail
this month…
NEW Mills Festival is delighted to announce the return of the Art Trail for 2025, which will take place across the town from September 12-28. It transforms the town into a gallery featuring 70 artists in nearly 60 venues. More than 50 local companies are taking part, displaying the artists’ work in windows in different shops and businesses. All the art works on display can be viewed on foot whilst taking in the town’s historic heritage sites and places of interest! Joanna Allen, Art Trail coordinator, says: “The curated Trail will take you on a journey through New Mills showcasing a broad range of high-quality art. We are lucky to have so many exciting local and regional artists taking part…and one international artist! This year we have painters, photographers, puppet makers, jewellers, printmakers, 3D work and textile artists; there really is something for everybody.” The free New Mills Festival Brochure also includes an Art Trail Map to help you plan your route. Other events include the first ever New Mill Open Art exhibition, to be held at the Milestone Gallery for the duration of the festival. There will be a selection of participating artists’ artworks, prints and cards available from the Pop-Up Festival shop, which will be at the Rock Mill Centre. More information is available at https:// newmillsfestival.co.uk and Facebook page.

82 Reflections September 2025
‘SECRET FREEDOMS’ PROJECT THE Level Centre at Rowsley is one of 80 venues across the UK taking part in a project called ‘Our Freedom: Then & Now’, which aims to bring community-based events into arts centres and libraries to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of Word War Two. As part of this project, Level Centre will focus on ‘Secret Freedoms’ and will be exploring the role our disabled and learning disabled community played during and after WWII – and how the freedoms of those who are disabled and learning disabled are often secretive to this day. If you have any stories to share, they would love to hear them. The Level Centre will celebrate the importance of these stories with an artistic project, and a week-long celebration of Secret Freedoms in October.
