KYLE HAMILTON:

THE AVATAR

BY HAYLEY SALVATORE

10 | 2023 baltimore ravens gameday

FROM A YOUNG AGE, KYLE HAMILTON always had a seemingly limitless variety of interests. He painted with his mother, Jackie, beat his older brother, Tyler, in games of Call of Duty and played basketball with his father, Derrick, all while studying hard to become a member of Mensa, the oldest high-IQ society in the world. Kyle credits his unique roots as a South Korean-Black American with providing him an open-minded perspective when trying new things. His capacity to transition seamlessly between new activities is something that has translated to his football career, most notably when the 6-foot-4 athlete made the decision to trade the basketball court for the football field. When Kyle, a Georgia native, received Division I collegiate basketball scholarship offers, most thought he would follow in Derrick’s footsteps and pursue a career in professional basketball. Kyle instead committed to the University of Notre Dame to play football, demonstrating how easily adaptable he is to new experiences. Since being the first safety tabbed in the 2022 NFL Draft, having been selected in the first round by the Ravens, the defensive weapon’s role is constantly changing within the position. Now in Year Two, Hamilton’s aptitude for adaptation makes it difficult for opposing offenses to predict where he’ll be on the field, allowing him to disguise routes to take down his opponent with quickness and stealth.

he provides in his ability to play different positions within the traditional safety role. “It’s like a pitcher having a bunch of different pitches,” No. 14 said in the days leading up to the Ravens’ Week 3 matchup earlier this season. “You don’t just want to be throwing the same fastball the whole game. You want to have some changeups, sliders and stuff like that so it’s difficult for the offense.” Hamilton’s tall frame is unusual for a safety, and he uses it to his advantage; he can be big when blitzing to make tackles or smaller if he’s in the backfield analyzing the opposing quarterback’s next move.

“I can move around and disguise where I’m at, in terms of different defenses that we play, and I feel like it also provides other guys on our defense to come in, play different areas and go make plays,” Hamilton said.

“I call him ‘The Avatar,’” edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney said. “He is 6-4 at safety and can run, can hit. I like playing with him. I think he’s a great player, smart guy. Kyle, he’s going to bring it.”

Hamilton views his role within the defense as ever-changing. He embraces the edge

In addition to his size, Hamilton’s calculated

footwork stems from his roots playing AAU and travel basketball in high school. “At my size, to be able to have good feet is rare, and I feel like my family growing up and playing basketball helped with that,” Hamilton said. Those two characteristics pair well to make him largely impenetrable in the backfield. Through 10 games, Hamilton has recorded 53 tackles (45 solo), a forced fumble and two interceptions, opening last Sunday’s tilt against the Browns with an incredible pick-six on the game’s second play. His immense skillset was also on full display during the Ravens’ overtime defeat to the Colts, when he recorded three sacks in the first half of the game – the most first-half sacks by any player in franchise history. Hamilton has become an impact playmaker within a well-defined, dominant defensive unit. He is committed and willing to use every aspect of his game to make plays that help take the team to the top.

With his speed, size and versatility, TE Isaiah Likely, a 2022 Ravens’ fourth-round pick out of Coastal Carolina, is another tool in the team’s pass game while also serving as a crucial blocker in Baltimore’s top-ranked rush attack. He’s likely to continue to be a factor in the Ravens’ future success, so get to know more about him below:

Do you have a favorite team outside of the NFL?

What is on your bucket list (non-football related)?

 I’m a fan of LeBron James, so I’d have to say the Los Angeles Lakers.

 I definitely have wanted to see London, England. I was going to go there before, but now it’s a bonus I got to go with the team. It was my first time out of the country!

What job would you have if you weren’t playing professional football?  I was in school to be a football recruiting analyst for a college program, so something in football operations.

If you could switch lives with any one teammate for one day, who would you choose?  I would switch lives with “L.J.” [Lamar Jackson]. If I was Lamar for a day, I would definitely be out and about in the city more than he is because it’s just one day.

Do you have any hidden talents?  I’m a hooper! I play basketball. I was a point guard.

Who is your biggest motivation?  My little sister. She’s 19 now, so she’s not really too little anymore. (laughter)

What is your go-to karaoke song?  I don’t know about a song, but I love Rylo Rodriguez. I listen to him every day!

Do you have any nicknames among your teammates?  They call me “Zay.” We have “Big Zay” and “Little Zay” [Zay Flowers] on the team now. (laughter)

What was your favorite class/ course you took in college?

@DaGorilla4

 Well, I was really good at math or statistics, so probably one of those classes.

@isaiahlikely_4

K Justin Tucker counted and sorted baby clothing and wrapped diapers at Share Baby for the fifth annual Caw to Action community day of service. Tucker joined 25 Ravens players who were out in the community through the annual event.

Caw to action Earlier this year, the Baltimore Ravens hosted their fifth annual Caw to Action community day of service. Alongside the United Way of Central Maryland, the Ravens identified 58 charitable organizations throughout the area to host separate volunteer events. The day, which offered both virtual and in-person volunteer opportunities, allowed Ravens fans from across the country the ability to participate and give back! Throughout the day, 33,860 volunteers participated in Caw to Action, totaling 5.7 million minutes of service – an NFL record for a single day of volunteering.

In addition to fan support, Ravens players participated in the day of giving, supporting a wide range of organizations. OL Patrick Mekari wrote letters to servicemembers at Progress Unlimited, RB Keaton Mitchell planted trees at Cecil Elementary School, and S Kyle Hamilton walked dogs at Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter. Those players were joined by 23 of their teammates, including DT Justin Madubuike, FB Pat Ricard and ILB Roquan Smith, at various sites. Finally, over 100 Ravens staff members from the Ravens Volunteer Network answered their own Caw to Action at 20 different sites across Maryland.

Currently in its 76th season of operation, Baltimore’s Marching Ravens consists of over 150 musicians, Crew Members, and Staff. On gameday, the Marching Ravens can be found at their pregame concert at Oriole Park, marching down RavensWalk and through the tailgate lots, and performing in the stadium throughout gameday. In addition to performing at Ravens home games, the ensemble continues to be deeply involved in the Maryland community, appearing at several parades and events throughout the year. Truly a Maryland tradition and a Pro Football Institution. For information and to schedule an appearance, visit:

RISE & CONQUER

The Ravens’ live mascots, Rise and Conquer, live in the Animal Embassy at the Maryland Zoo. These important birds aren’t able to travel due to a dangerous avian flu. But you can meet other Zoo animals along Ravens walk before each home game. For more information, visit:
