Supporting Local Artists at the

Marri Salt, the host of Pensacola Arts Market

n the last year, markets have sprung up across the entire city of Pensacola— from Uptown Pensacola Market, to 200 South Outdoor Market, Palafox Market, Pensacola Positivity Market and a myriad of other pop-up markets at breweries and restaurants. In the wake of the pandemic, these outdoor markets allow people to shop in the open air, support local artisans and businesses and add a little social routine back into their weekends. One newbie in the bustling market community is the Pensacola Arts Market, organized by local artist and vintage clothing connoisseur, Marri Salt. As the owner of Funky Yet Groovy, a traveling and budget-friendly vintage boutique, Salt wanted to create a market focused on uplifting and supporting local artists. She hosted her first market in November 2020 and has since outgrown her original location at New Market Antique Mall. Although the market will rotate through various venues in Pensacola, The Pensacola Arts Market is currently located at Cordova Square, 1101 N. 12th Avenue, and is open from 10 am to 3 pm every second and fourth Saturday of the month. 10 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

“I really love showcasing local artisans and connecting with people,” Salt said. “I’m passionate about art because it provides so much for the community—dancing, music, joy, happiness. Artists provide most of our entertainment, and I think the pandemic showcased that. It makes me really happy to see busy markets all over Pensacola. I just wanted to create a nice, safe and affordable space to show everyone that we have some really cool people and things happening in Pensacola.” As a single mom with two kids, Salt explained that the pandemic allowed her to slow down and focus on her own artwork and business. She has hosted art markets in the past and planned to launch the Pensacola Arts Market before the state-wide lockdowns postponed her plans. Since opening, the market regularly hosts around 15 artisans with a sprawling variety of goods: potted plants, microgreens, crocheted art, handmade bags, beauty products, baked goods, candles and diverse artistic medi-

ums including digital art, painted canvases, drawings and sculptures. Most of the vendors are recruited by Salt herself through the network of artists she has built in Pensacola. Each month, the vendors rotate with new artists who are constantly brought in to keep the market offerings diverse and avoid multiple artists selling the same thing. Salt also spends a great deal of time marketing and showcasing each individual vendor online. “As an artist, I know how the world works, so I don’t want to charge a lot for setting up at the market,” Salt explained. “I spend a lot of time advertising and building this network for artists to connect with each other. I start out each month on Instagram with a flyer for the event, then each post after that is welcoming the artists you can expect to see at the upcoming market. I post a photo of them with some of the goods they sell and tag their business in the post to build up the excitement for the market. My goal is to regularly move the market around Pensacola and have this traveling band of artisans.”

For Christina Johns, a regular vendor at the Pensacola Arts Market and owner of @lifesnaturalbeat, the market lets her tap into the artistic energy of the space and constantly meet new people. She sells handpainted, planted pots with intuitive words and messages inscribed inside and also makes jewelry and prayer beads with hemp and crystals. “My favorite thing about the market is the people,” she said. “I love being out in the community, seeing new faces, talking to people and feeding off their energy and the other artist’s energy. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to come together like this. I’ve been setting up here for six months now and it’s such a diverse market. None of us are in competition with each other. We’re able to come and support each other.” For artists and power couple Sean Bush and Lindsey Hampton, art markets across Pensacola provide a space for them to support each other’s artwork and make money doing what they love. Although they are new vendors at the Pensacola

Arts Market, they have been setting up together at different markets around Pensacola for eight months now. Bush, found online @BitKnight_ Designs, creates bright-colored, high quality fan art illustrations and oil paintings inspired by nerd culture, and Hampton, found online @a_sunflowerdaze, focuses on fine art style figure paintings. “We’ve had a great experience setting up at markets together,” Bush explained. “I'd much rather do business in person, any day of the week, than pretend to be some persona online, where no one knows my face

or how I really feel about things. It’s a better experience to interact in person with someone interested in my artwork. Plus, we attract a variety of crowds with our different art styles. I keep the nerds in the tent with my art and she attracts a lot of women embracing body empowerment.” Hampton explained that her nude figure art can initially shock some people browsing at the markets, but it has allowed her to test the waters with creating more geometric-style art. “The markets can be inspiring and give me room to experiment with my art. Some people tell us, ‘I could never

work with my partner!’ But I think it’s exciting, and I get to be hype for him when he makes a sale and vice versa. The markets are like a family and a community to us,” Hampton said. The Pensacola Arts Market is currently located at Cordova Square, 1101 N. 12th Avenue, and is held from 10 am to 3 pm on alternating Saturdays. The route is mostly through quiet residential neighborhoods but also connects with busy commercial areas as well. Some landmarks along the way include the Tryon Branch Library, Tippin Park, Bryan Park, Sacred Heart Hospital, Washington High School, Highland Terrace Park, Woodland Heights Community Center, Hollice T. Williams Park, Plaza Ferdinand and Plaza de Luna.

Tell me a little about your early years and discovering your creativity.

DS: I grew up in rural Williamsburg, Virginia as an only child, so I think I always gravitated toward creative endeavors. As a kid, I made videos on our family camcorder and would record tapes on my parent’s piano. It didn’t occur to me until the end of college that I could make a career out of creativity. I went to college at James Madison University and quickly switched from science and technology to media arts and design. Watching TV was like my number one past time for most of my life, so I started to get really interested in movies. In college, I played in a few post-rock bands. It wasn’t until I started moving away from my band mates that I decided to be a one-man act and play music independently.

Is there an overlap in your career as a cinematographer and your interest in making music?

For many of us, music is the much-needed respite from daily chaos and our catalyst for creativity. While some people are drawn to music with heavy lyrics and a structured rhythm, others relish in the layers of soundwaves created by ambient music that allow them to imprint their own emotions and memories on the noise. Local cinematographer and musician, Doug Stanford, began creating music in 2013 under the name YNICORNS and just released his newest album “we miss you, stay safe // &&&” in April 2021 with the record label “Post. Recordings.” Armed with his electric guitar and pedalboard, Stanford creates layers of sound reminiscent of the ambient, post-rock and experimental genres. His music can be found on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube @YNICORNS. 14 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

DS: I think that both cinematography and the way I play music are philosophically very in line, because cinematography is about communicating a lot of unspoken things in the story. The dialogue might tell you a character says one thing, but the cinematography can tell you they think a different way. If you need to communicate how someone feels without announcing it to the audience, you can do that through the way you shoot it. With the music I play, there are no words or lyrics, so it allows the listener to imprint their own feelings in that space. I look at both mediums as a way to communicate mood and atmosphere in ways that are difficult to do verbally.

Can you walk me through the steps of making a track?

DS: There are two basic composition methods I use for YNICORNS, and it's all guitar based. I play a regular electric guitar and put it through a pedal board with 15 or so effect pedals that are mostly reverb, delays, looping and one pitch shifter. The board is almost a generative music machine like an instrument of its own, because I can have different phrases playing in different loop lengths. So, you have like three different parts playing out of sync with one another that start to build unexpected combinations of harmony and rhythm. This most recent album started off as 30 improv recordings that were 15 or 20 minutes each, and then I rearranged them to

easier listening lengths. The only unconventional thing I do is inspired from Godspeed You! Black Emperor, where I use a screwdriver to pick the guitar strings. It creates this weird violin-like sound that kind of sounds like a violin bow made out of a saw blade.

Your album “we miss you, stay safe // &&&” that came out this year seems to have some pandemic-undertones. Was this a byproduct of the pandemic?

DS: Originally, this album was going to be songs about being alone. I started working on it in the midst of the statemandated lock down when I was quarantined by myself. The entire thing felt weird and unpredictable and frightening. Then, in the summer, America blew up with this massive civil rights problem surrounding police violence and people took to the streets to protest. Suddenly, the album took a turn from being just about loneliness to this shift about the experience of mid-summer protest and the violence and confusion that erupted along with it. So, there is a shift in the album—it begins in a place where you have some sense of what’s going on and ends in a place where you understand what’s happening, but it’s a completely different world.

Your Spotify bio says that your music is inspired by nostalgia—can you explain what you mean by that?

DS: This new album itself isn’t necessarily nostalgic, but my music in general is kind of repetitive and hypnotic. Through repeat listens, you can hear new textures and little details you may not have heard the first time. I think repeat listens are opportunities to dive deeper into the sound, lose yourself and be meditative. A track from one of my first albums called “We Laid In Cool Grass as Satellites Streaked the Summer Sky” was inspired by a night I had hanging out with a really good friend of mine in the backyard just staring at the sky and talking for a long time. To me, that’s really nostalgic to be taken back to that specific experience. The ultimate goal is if someone can re-experience something from my listening to my music, like triggering a memory about a trip they took or a person they lost. That would make me so happy. elta-8-THC delivers a hemp-based high without paranoia or anxiety—all while being completely legal. This popular hemp-cannabis derivative is flying off the shelves at local smoke shops, dispesaries and cannabis stores. Delta-8 is closely related to Delta-9-THC, the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis known to provide the effects of being high.

Delta-8 is derived from pot’s legal cousin, hemp. The hemp-based derrivative makes Delta-8 legal under the 2018 Farm Bill that governs the production, sale and use of legal hemp products. While experts say Delta-8 can deliver a high that’s milder, but similar to regular cannabis, it’s currently lawful to sell, possess and use. This federal legalization is making Delta-8 the most talked about product in the hemp industry. While the recreational use of marijuana remains illegal under state law, local sellers say that Delta-8 is seeing dramatic growth in sales. When Pensacola-natives Frank DeRise and Blake Hammac noticed other companies taking the plunge into the Delta-8 market—and returning a huge profit despite Florida’s heavily regulated medical marijuana industry—the duo saw the 16 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

potential for profit and launched Pensacola’s first Delta-8 cannabis shop. Located at 503 North Navy Blvd. in Pensacola, Legal Leaf offers a variety of Delta-8 gummies, smokeables, canned drinks, vaping options and other hemp products, including CBD. Unlike medical marijuana, consumers are not required to have a medical card for any of the products found at Legal Leaf. DeRise and Hammac emphasize that these products can help those in the community who may suffer from medical issues, pain or anxiety. For those that may not have the resources to access medical marijuana, Legal Leaf provides a legal alternative to access THC products. “We saw the need for this type of product in our local market and wanted to make legal THC products more available to those who couldn’t or preferred not to get it from a traditional medical dispensary,” Frank DeRrise, co-owner of Legal Leaf said. “There’s a lot of individuals who could be helped by having access to legal THC without a card. There is an unseen cap on the medical marijuana side for Florida. It’s expensive to acquire a medical card and not everyone can afford that.”

In addition to being more readily available than medical marijuana competitors, Legal Leaf offers a variety of consumption forms. Products range from concentrates to edibles but also include non-traditional varieties of Delta-8 products, such as canned THC infused soda. The most popular products are reportedly the standard flower with edibles coming in as a close second. Legal Leaf does not currently participate in the manufacturing process of Delta-8; however, all of their products are acquired from reputable vendors that provide copies of lab tests and comprehensive lists of the active ingredients contained in each of the products. As for the future of Legal Leaf, the owners have plans to open up a second location in the near future and plan to expand into a mobile vending operation that the owners refer to as a “Cannabus.” Both DeRise and Hammac look forward to potentially expanding this independent LLC into a multi-state franchise.

Downtown Crowd consulted with local experts to get the scoop on everything you need to know about this hot new THC product. So if you’re intrigued, but also a little confused, it’s high time you check out the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions surrounding Delta-8-THC.

WHAT EXACTLY IS DELTA-8? Delta-8 is a cannabis compound that has become popular because of its similarity to Delta-9-THC, the main compound in cannabis that gets you high, causing euphoria, happiness, sedation, symptom relief and much more. Large amounts of THC are found in a majority of cannabis strains. The similarities between the two cannabinoids lie in their chemical structures and their names. THC’s scientific name is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or Delta-9. Delta-8 is short for Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol. Delta-8 can cause effects similar to regular Delta-9 THC—but they will be much less potent. Nearly all Delta-8 on the market today is manufactured from hemp-derived CBD, which makes it, in theory at least, part of a federally legal chain of origin.

WILL DELTA-8 GET YOU HIGH? Delta-8 will get you high, albeit not as high as regular cannabis. For those living in states where cannabis is illegal, Delta-8 may be a legal way to experience some THC-like effects from cannabis. Some consumers may even prefer Delta-8 products that aren’t as strong as regular cannabis, even if they can legally obtain THC products. Delta-9 can cause negative effects for some, bringing on anxiety or paranoia. Delta-8 may offer a smoother, milder high.

Delta-8 consumers report many of the same effects as THC, such as mild euphoria, happiness, uplifting feelings and relief from some symptoms such as pain and insomnia. Adverse side effects may be similar to those of regular cannabis, including dry mouth, red eyes, getting the munchies and short-term memory loss. It’s important to note that Delta-8 hasn’t been studied extensively and more research is needed on the effects it has on the mind and body.

Delta-8 has more similarities to Delta-9 than CBD, both in its chemical structure and because it gets you high. Delta-8 binds to the body’s endocannabinoid system like Delta-9. CBD doesn’t bind as readily to the endocannabinoid system, making it non-intoxicating; although, CBD can offer medicinal benefits for the consumer. If you are looking for effects similar to THC but with a reduced potency, Delta-8 may be for you. If you seek relief from certain symptoms and don’t want to get intoxicated, you may want to try a CBD product.

WHAT MAKES DELTA-8 LEGAL? Delta-8 currently exists in a legal gray area. The 2018 Farm Bill, a federal act passed by Congress, legalized hemp in the United States. That act defines hemp as: DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM | 17

LET’S HASH OUT DELT∆-8 “All derivatives, extracts, cannabinoids, isomers, acids, salts, and salts of isomers, whether growing or not, with a Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0.3 percent.” This language makes Delta-8 legal, because it does not contain any Delta-9 THC. There are 11 states where Delta-8 is believed to be illegal according to state law.

HOW IS DELTA-8 MADE?

The federal Drug Enforcement Administration has a proposed rule to indirectly classify Delta-8 THC as a Schedule I controlled substance, which would make it federally illegal. That rule is not yet final.

Commonly, CBD is extracted from hemp and refined into an isolate, and then that CBD isolate is synthesized into Delta-8. Delta-8 requires more processing and is more expensive to make than CBD, but this increased production cost is balanced out by the high demand for it.

Additionally, in August 2020, the DEA released an Interim Final Rule, a document meant to update and confirm the differences between hemp and cannabis. That interim rule said: “All synthetically derived tetrahydrocannabinols remain Schedule I controlled substances,” which would make Delta-8 illegal because it is a tetrahydrocannabinol that is extracted, or synthetically derived.

Delta-8 is found in trace amounts in cannabis and hemp plants, and as hemp is legal to grow anywhere in the US and more readily available, the cannabinoid is often sourced from that.

lenging to find genuine Delta-8 products. When shopping for Delta-8 products, check out a producer’s website to see if they have information on how they source and create their products. Quality, tested products usually have a QR code or batch number on the box that allows you to look up test results on the producer’s website. Stay away from products that are not tested or have questionable test results, as you won’t know if they contain Delta-8, and if they could potentially contain harmful substances. Currently, however, there are about 70 active STARBASE programs nationally, and Pensacola will be the third program in Florida. U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio announced the return of STARBASE to Pensacola in a press release Wednesday, just a couple of months after he penned a column with U.S. Sen. Rick Scott asking the DoD to reinstate Pensacola’s program.

ollowing an eight-year hiatus, a popular Department of Defense education program for fifth-grade students at low-income schools is making its highly anticipated return to Naval Air Station Pensacola.

The Science Technology Academies Reinforcing Basic Aviation Space Exploration program, better known as STARBASE, will allow fifth-grade students at Title 1 schools throughout Escambia County to 22 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

STARBASE was nixed from all U.S. Navy bases in 2013 due to sequestration budget cuts throughout the Department of Defense.

The STARBASE program is billed as a hands-on, 25-hour curriculum that takes place over a span of five days, offering lessons on a variety of STEM subjects, including robotics, coding, rocket science, 3-D printing, computer science and designing space stations and all-terrain vehicles. The first students are expected at STARBASE Pensacola in 2022.

“STARBASE Pensacola is about showing children the art of the possible,” said Capt. Tim Kinsella, NAS Pensacola commanding officer, in the press release. “Students will get to spend five days learning in a state-ofthe-art facility and will get the opportunity to see a future in a STEM related career. It is my hope that STARBASE Pensacola will inspire students to unlock their potential, and see that they can be more than they thought possible.
