DECEMBER IS SUPPOSED to be a time of celebration, family, delicious meals and the tying up of the loose ends from 2014. We should be making merry, treasured memories, of which real photos are taken and printed out and then placed lovingly into a photo album. We’re meant to carefully choose gifts for our loved ones, and delicately wrap them with special wired, sparkly ribbon. We’re to bake pies from family recipes, and then eat those pies by the tiny sliver slice until our tummy hurts. I don’t know about the rest of you, but for me it’s more of a blind, slapdash, backwards stumble through the 31 days. I abandon my wild ambitions of all handmade gifts about seven to ten days into the month. I make maybe one or two dishes from the dozens of tabs sticking out of my holiday Food Network Magazine, and only one treasured family recipe (drop cakes—fried dough balls covered in powdered sugar. Because tradition!).

That’s OK, though. December is about making it through. Anything more is a huge victory, and should be celebrated thusly. Did you remember to bring your Secret Santa gift to the office party? Congratulations! You made it to the parade without any of the kids losing their reindeer antler headbands? Incredible! You sent out holiday cards on time? Are you a wizard?? Commemorate these amazing achievements with the cheer this season demands, and the victory cocktails it requires! Grab your nearest friend or loved one and hold on tight. December is a whirlwind, with all the usual Downtown trappings and then some. For the first time ever, there’s a December Gallery Night—a productive evening of giftshopping or an excuse for a night out amid the chaos? You decide! There’s no shortage of holiday festivities, from stage performances and the popular Winterfest festivities, to the Pelican Drop that will cap the year. As we enjoy these many December delights, we can’t help but look back fondly on all the greatness that 2014 has heaped upon us. We at DTC are rehashing some of our best memories from the year in a retrospective look at just a few of our favorites from the last 11 months. It’s been an amazing year for our city center and the success is certain to continue. This month, as is custom, there’s so, so much to do and see Downtown. Downtown Pensacola is certainly the place to party when the weekend starts, but if you want to get a head start on all the fun, just head down to 22 S. Palafox St. and up the stairs to Wild Greg’s Saloon. Wild Greg’s Saloon, a countrywestern dance club and bar, opened just last month, and things are already looking promising for such a young business. “We’ve certainly been busy. We’ve already been through one Gallery Night,” said Greg Urban, the club’s owner. “Like any new business, there are a few hiccups along the way, but we’re working through them.” The concept for Wild Greg’s is emulative of Dallas Bull in Tampa, Urban’s favorite bar, as well as The Block in Fort Walton. It features a full bar, balcony view, and boasts the largest dance floor around, as well as the meanest mechanical bull on the Gulf Coast, according to the official website. Urban also noted that feedback has been largely positive. Kurt Just, his business partner and Wild Greg’s’ general manager, is optimistic about the establishment’s trajectory.

“Overall, I’d have to say we’re happy,” Just said, mentioning that their customers are telling their friends about the club. “We’re hoping our customers are happy. They seem to be; they’re packing the place.” When asked about the professional traits that translate from business to business, Urban, who also helms a construction and excavation firm, said that building relationships is key. He added that taking time to acknowledge customers and say that they appreciate their business is just as important as maintaining a good rapport with representatives of a Fortune 500 company. Music is the area in which the Wild Greg’s staff gets the most responses. While the themed bar can be a haven for country music fans, Wild Greg’s plays its fair share of Top 40 hits, which does leave some patrons divided. For those that want to take to the dance floor, the club hosts free line dancing lessons from 8 pm to 9 pm on Thursdays and Fridays. Wild Greg’s will soon be hosting their line-dancing festivities on Wednesday nights as well. This year has been a great one for Downtown Pensacola, solidifying what many already know about the area’s positive potential and paving the way for future successes. We here at DTC headquarters get plenty of opportunities to partake, often voluntarily, in the very best of Downtown and we’re taking a nostalgic look back at a few of our favorite things from Downtown 2014.

PENSACON Personally, my favorite part of Pensacon was simply strolling through the Bay Center, checking out all the costumes and feeling the excitement of giddy fans, nerds, hobbyists and comic-lovers. Seeing this massive event come together so successfully because of organizers reaching out and being embraced by the community was a heartening show of how Pensacola can do things right. Also, one night we ran into RJ Haddy from the SyFy Channel’s

special effects makeup competition show Face Off in the Crowne Plaza lobby, and he politely bantered with us for at least two minutes as we gushed embarrassingly at him, which was awesome. ICE FLYERS Normally I’m no sports nut, but the Pensacola Ice Flyers ice hockey team inspires a raging, semi-aggressive hockey monster to awaken. This monster is known to explain the “icing” rule to passersby unprompted, yell obscenities at refs and most especially, to joyously take part in the embarrassing ritual fan dance any time a Flyer scores. This year saw the beloved team winning a second consecutive SPHL championship to close the 2013/2014 season, and the first few games of 2014/2015 have shown the seemingly unstoppable force of these athletes. CABARET What happens at Pensacola Little Theatre’s annual fundraising event stays there, or at least those I went with tell me that daily as I threaten to spill their secrets like a small-town Gossip Girl. Musicians, dancers, vendors and more adorn every floor, nearly every room, and even the sidewalk of the Cultural

Center as guests enjoy top-notch entertainment, uniquely themed party rooms, and only the appropriate amount of alcohol. The event has grown considerably since its inception, and anticipation for the year’s theme often rivals that of the Oscar nominations announcement, at least in Pensacola. SoGo However you feel about the branding of a small but happening segment of Downtown, the socalled SoGo district is certainly blossoming with good things. I’ve been smitten with the Bodacious Olive and the aspirational lifestyle it sells to area

foodies since it opened. (Why, yes, I do need a splash of lemongrass mint white balsamic in my glass of ice water! This popcorn is just begging for a drizzle of harissa olive oil, don’t you agree?) But now that the surrounding retailers and businesses have opened, the high-end hotspot is my go-to for little gifts (Mainline Art House), coffee (Bodacious Brew), hair needs (Volume One), ramen (Nom), and my very necessary crab claw-shaped crab claw crackers (So Gourmet). PALAFOX MARKET The Palafox Market has been deemed a great success for the community and local farmers for several years, and its year-round bounty makes the perfect addition to any table. A visit to Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza offers enough food to stock the fridge and pantry and an arts and craft section filled with perfect gifts for yourself or others. This year I stepped outside my usual market grocery list of honey, greens and veggies to try out the other delicious offerings like freshly baked breads, meat from Green Cedars Farm or the tasty wares of the folks I now know fondly as Chilito Man and Tamale Lady. I encourage all market patrons to try something new from these passionate farmers and makers at their next visit. SAENGER CLASSIC MOVIE SERIES Seeing a movie in theater for just $5 nowadays is almost as rare as seeing classics like Dr. No and Psycho on the silver screen. The Saenger makes it happen though, and in the process, makes the hot, humid months of summer a little easier to get through. There’s something about seeing classic movies in a vintage-styled theater and paying only $5 for the experience. Seriously, this is

simultaneously the least expensive and classiest date night that Pensacola offers. Take advantage of it. It’s only $5. STEVE MCCURRY When Pensacola State College announced it would not only be hosting an exhibit by the famed photographer Steve McCurry, but would also host the man himself for a lecture at the Saenger, there was likely a collective questioning of, “Wait, who is that?” But once we realized he’s the photographer behind Afghan Girl, arguably the most iconic photograph in the world, PSC had cemented its growing and prominent role in the artistic community by bringing yet another important contemporary artist to speak to the community. The lecture McCurry gave at the Saenger showcased an amazing body of work that stretched well beyond his most famous work, and the stories of his travels basically make him the Indiana Jones of photography. THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES Performing in and helping to organize a V-Day event on Feb. 14 at Artel was an amazing experience for a multitude of reasons. It brought together a passionate, dedicated and varied group of Pensacola women, many of whom I got to know for the first time during meetings and rehearsals. It showcased the gorgeous and versatile space that is Artel. It raised funds for FavorHouse of Northwest Florida. It made more than 200 people laugh, gasp, cry and/or cheer at the spirited performances of Eve Ensler’s seminal work. For me, V-Day will never mean Valentine’s again.

ARTEL PAINTSCAPING Another highly anticipated art event for Pensacola, the Paintscaping 3D projection on the face of the Artel Gallery during Foo Foo Fest was, in a word, cool. Really, really, really cool. For many, the medium of 3D projection is completely new, and the way it utterly transformed the building and the space around it was imaginative and compelling. From its lighthearted take on Pensacola’s history to the Tron-esque visuals at the end, the Paintscaping project brings hope that public art and more

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL The talented artists of Cirque du Soleil have made their way to the Gulf Coast in their touring shows several times over the last few years, and Varekai, this past April’s performance at the Pensacola Bay Center, definitely lived up to the company’s high level of artistry and ambition. The show was loosely based on the story of Icarus, but whether the actual plot makes sense is kind of a moot point in the world of Cirque du Soleil, as colorful costumes, dizzying aerialists and slinking dancers leap and twirl across the stage. Interspersed with more dramatic sequences were comical vignettes that often included embarrassed audience volunteers who became unwitting comedic highlights of Varekai. THE FLOOD AFTERMATH The flood of April 29 and 30 was a devastating surprise for much of the Southeast, including Downtown Pensacola. The damage was seemingly arbitrary, with some businesses sustaining tens

of thousands of dollars worth of water damage and others remaining nearly untouched. There was nothing random, though, about those who volunteered time and resources to help those affected. Rival restaurants helped stack sandbags during the rainfall and remove water by the bucketfull immediately after. Politicians put aside their differences and banded together for emergency restoration money. Now, the conversation has turned to prevention and storm water management, and Downtown Pensacola is better for it. LEGO EXHIBIT Everything was awesome this year as the Pensacola Museum of Art procured the worldfamous Nathan Sawaya Art of the Brick exhibit. Some of the creations were fun and whimsical, while others were serious and impressionistic, but they were all made of everyone’s favorite childhood toy, and the installation was one of the best in the museum’s history. Demographics that wouldn’t normally go to an art museum suddenly felt compelled to rediscover their youthful joy and perhaps discover for the first time the inspiring and impactful effect of artistic expression.

There are many ways to celebrate the new year, and Pensacola provides everything for a great party to welcome the new and get rid of the old. Whether you’re enjoying a dinner with drinks at one of the many fantastic restaurants downtown or reveling in the auditory feast of the Symphony Orchestra’s year-end concert at the Saenger Theatre, the night is limitless. Regardless of what you do through the night, all Pensacolians end it the same way: watching a glittering pelican light up the night. The Pelican Drop has been an instant classic since its début in 2008. Upward of 50,000 people gather annually to party under the light of the 14-foot tall pelican. Beginning at around 6:45 pm with a blessing to honor Pensacola and bring it good fortune in the upcoming year, the streets of Palafox and Government will be closed to traffic allowing revelers to safely enjoy the many street vendors and attractions. Street closures will begin the morning of Dec. 31 and stay up through 1 am New Year’s morning. This

Local and guest talent including the Pensacola Little Theatre and the band Rewind, hailing from Louisiana, will be performing throughout the night. Being such a popular event, many people will arrive early to reap the best parking spots, so keep that in mind when planning your evening. In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers. By Josh Newby.

THE INTERVIEW RELEASE DATE: December 25 CAST: James Franco, Seth Rogen, Lizzy Caplan EXDOUS: GODS AND KINGS RELEASE DATE: December 12 CAST: Christian Bale, Aaron Paul, Joel Edgerton, Ben Kingsley, Sigourney Weaver What I got from the preview: You know the timeless tale. Jewish baby Moses is sent down-river to live with Egyptian royalty before growing up and answering God’s call to rebel against his adoptive family and set the children of Israel free from 400 years of slavery, which is almost as long as this film’s slated running time. Most notable for: Ridley Scott is one of the few directors alive today who could probably pull off an old-Hollywood Biblical epic, cast whitewashing and Joel Edgerton notwithstanding. I hope this movie returns the director and the epic genre to their former glories. Unqualified critical observation: Biblical movies are so hot right now. You have the ones that actually find an audience amongst everyone (Noah, The Passion of the Christ, and Son of God, to name a few recent ones) and those that just preach to the choir (Saving Christmas, God’s Not Dead). One group is entertaining and often effective; the other group is full of overly preachy content that only serves to validate the converted and alienate everyone else. Let’s hope this one falls into the former group, for God’s sake.

INHERENT VICE RELEASE DATE: December 12 CAST: Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone, Josh Brolin What I got from the preview: This pastel-palate noir film takes place in the 1970s, when a drug-addicted detective takes on the case of his missing ex-girlfriend. The trailer is delightfully vague, stringing together just enough shocking, abstract images and period music to tease the senses and propel this movie into a cross-genre experience of its own. Think a movie based on a Hunter S. Thompson book, but with harder drugs, better source material and less pop-psychology. Most notable for: Every now and then, Paul Thomas Anderson emerges from his mysterious life as one of the few remaining auteur filmmakers of his time and delivers a cinematic experience with plots so interwoven and characters so memorable that it leaves you dazed for days. Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and The Master are just a few of his masterpieces. Unqualified critical observation: This was almost my pick of the month, and it would’ve been had I not feared alienating my dear audience with extreme pretentiousness. This will be one of those movies that reminds you why the movies were invented in the first place.

What I got from the preview: Two media personalities played by real-life best friends Franco and Rogen get the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interview Kim Jong-un, the infamous North Korean dictator who’s best known for boldly pairing a bowl cut with fascism. As the two prepare to embark on their journey, the CIA recruits them to pull off a top-secret assassination mission. Most notable for: Franco’s and Rogen’s on-screen chemistry was hilariously proven in The Pineapple Express and This Is the End. That they continue to get paid for making

incredibly enjoyable movies that basically show them just hanging out is a testament that dreams really do come true. Unqualified critical observation: The Interview was supposed to open earlier this year, but was pushed back due to its controversial subject matter. Jong-un has responded to the movie previews by saying that the film is essentially an act of war. Annoying one of the world’s most awful people, while watching two of its funniest people, is absolutely worth $8 in my book.

ANNIE RELEASE DATE: December 19 CAST: Jamie Foxx, Rose Byrne, Cameron Diaz, Quvenzhane Wallis What I got from the preview: It’s a hard-knock life for little orphan Annie, until New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks adopts her in this modern update of the classic Broadway play that proves a little sun-will-come-out-tomorrow optimism goes a long way. Most notable for: I’ll just come right out and say it. Annie is black. Yes, one of the most iconically red-headed and freckled little girls to ever grace the Great White Way or the Silver Screen is now a minority (gasp[!]). But hey, if Ridley Scott can get a bunch of honkies to play Israelites and Egyptians, then I’m okay with this “urban reimagining.” Unqualified critical observation: The musical has always been passable to me. The underlying themes of love, loneliness and family always outshined the music. This will surely be a completely serviceable movie, engaging a new generation with a classic story. And with Jay-Z producing, well, there just better be a Hard-Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem) remix (check the bassline out).

INTO THE WOODS RELEASE DATE: December 25 CAST: Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine, Meryl Streep What I got from the preview: In this fairytale to end all fairytales (and musical to end all musicals), all your favorite fantastical characters join together in a dark yet oddly cheerful movie about a witch who teaches lessons to the likes of Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and Rapunzel. Most notable for: They’ve been trying to make this movie for a long time, every since Shrek proved that ironic takes on fairytales could be lucrative. Well, it was worth the wait, as some of the best young actors and actresses join together to bring this magical tale to life. Unqualified critical observation: Johnny Depp as the Big Bad Wolf is acceptable, since any movie with him should make an effort to conceal his presence in as much make-up and CGI as possible. The other roles, with everygirl Anna Kendrick playing Cinderella, embodiment-of-all-that-is-wonderful-and-pure Meryl Streep playing the witch, beautiful Emily Blunt playing the Baker’s Wife, and dreamboat Chris Pine playing the square-jawed prince, are spot-on and should be a delight to behold. downtowncrowd.com Dec 2014

The newest addition to Downtown’s culinary scene is located in an intimate space inside the Artisan building at 410 S. Palafox, and chef/owner Brad Jones is bringing a style of Japanese dining that has as yet been absent from Pensacola’s palate. For those unfamiliar with izakaya, the term refers to a sake shop where patrons can stay, have drinks and share a variety of small plates. Jones says Nom is Japanese-inspired but is a decidedly modern American izakaya, with a focus on sustainable sushi, shared plates and house-made ramen. “Izakaya is essentially a Japanese pub. Generally in Japan you go to an izakaya to drink with your buddies and share bites of food,” he says. “We specialize in sushi, ramen and shared plates. Ramen’s not so much share-able but sushi and our small plates are meant to be shared.” The izakaya portion of the menu includes fresh takes on small dishes like mini tuna tacos with green apple daikon slaw and tori karaage, a Japanese fried chicken with green tea salt. These tasty bites are perfect to start off a meal with mouth-watering flavor combinations. The sushi menu includes inventive rolls that boast mostly locally sourced fish and shellfish. Popular choices like the cucumber wrapped Artisan roll and crab saladtopped the Graffiti Bridge are quickly becoming favorites among patrons, Jones says. For those seeking more comforting fare, order a bowl of ramen, the perfect dish to warm up as the weather cools down. This ramen bears little to no resemblance

to the plastic packets ubiquitous in college kitchenettes. The noodles are made in house, and so are the three flavors of perfectly crafted broth. The ramen options are chicken shoyu, tonkotsu (pork), and vegetarian miso, and each broth is crafted to have layers of flavor that serve as the base of each bowl. “Our broths have a lot of umami in them,” Jones says. “We bring in things like seaweed and shiitake mushrooms to flavor our broths and we have chicken broth, a pork broth and a roasted vegetable broth.” The latter two options include perfectly cooked meat, as well as vegetables that add flavor and texture, and a soft poached egg. The vegetarian miso includes marinated tofu, crispy shiitakes, and all are finished with a drizzle of flavored oil and served with a side of seasonal pickled vegetables to cleanse the palate after slurping down the rich soup. While Nom is on the smaller side, Jones says he preferred the intimate space for his restaurant, where he can be close to his customers and maintain the high quality of dishes he serves. The atmosphere is modern and minimal, with one statement décor piece against an exposed brick wall and wall-mounted chalkboards behind the sushi bar for a rotating list of specials. While the eatery would seem perfectly at home on a street in a bigger city, Jones and his team at Nom are putting a hometown twist on their Japanese fare, and elevating the food landscape in Pensacola at the same time.

Free Lunchtime Trolley for Downtown

Downtown Pensacola has new transportation coming to town. In November Jack Williams of Seville Quarter, along with Quint and Rishy Studer, began providing a free trolley service for the Downtown area that runs Monday through Friday from 11 am to 2 pm. The trolley’s route, resembling the shape of the letter Q, is what sparked the name for the trolley, the “Q.” Making the loop approximately every 20 minutes, the Q will start its route at the newly built Maritime Place Office Building by the Maritime Park. From there, the route will continue east on Main Street, north on Tarragona Street, west on Government Street, north on Palafox Place, west on Belmont Street, and south on DeVilliers Street, completing the route back to Maritime Place. Rishy Studer, owner of the Bodacious Family of Shops, said the trolley would help Downtown workers and shoppers get from place to place in an entertaining way.

Peoples Choice Voting Continues in SOGO Gingerbread House Competition

Look out for whimsical gingerbread creations throughout the SOGO District of Downtown. A panel of local celebrity judges have scored the gingerbread creations, and those results will be kept under wraps until an award ceremony scheduled for Dec. 17. However, local friends, family, shoppers, and fans of these gingerbread makers have the chance to vote for their winning choice as well. Top prize for the People’s Choice category is $1,000. Votes cost a quarter each, with all proceeds going to benefit the Health and Hope Clinic, which provides health care services to uninsured individuals and families in our community. Votes may be cast by purchasing tickets at the SoGourmet shop upstairs from the Bodacious Olive. Tickets or cash may be dropped into the voting ballot boxes at each gingerbread house location. Elf Parade and Winterfest 2014 Nov. 28 - Dec. 24 Downtown Pensacola will be transformed into a magical wonderland full of lights and sounds once more as Winterfest returns. This year’s celebration kicks off Friday, Nov. 28 when the elves gather behind the T.T. Wentworth Museum at 3:30 pm for their costume contest. At 4:30 pm, the elves and all their fellows will be lead by Parade Marshall Mollye Barrows and begin their parade to Plaza Wonderland at the Old County Courthouse where the opening ceremonies and Reindeer Games will take place. At 6 pm Santa Claus will be in his sleigh, waiting to hear the Christmas wishes of all the good children. The Snow Princess will be crowned during this time, during the Snow Princess Tea at Portabello Market inside the Pensacola Cultural Center from 3-4 pm. Girls age 3-7 who come dressed as snow fairies will make up the Snow Princess’s court and help escort her, along with the Snow Prince, during the Elf Parade. Tickets for the Tea are $25 for one child and one adult and include passes for that night’s 6 pm showing of The Polar Express at the Saenger Theatre. Lost Virtue: Pensacola’s Red Light District at the Destination Archaeology Resource Center Through December The Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) is opening a new temporary exhibit titled Lost Virtue: Pensacola’s Red Light District inside the Destination Archaeology Resource Center. While the women who worked in Pensacola’s red light district left few written records behind, archaeology is helping to tell their story. Several artifacts associated with the women who worked in Pensacola’s red light district during the late 1800s and early 1900s uncovered through archaeology will be on display for the first time. The DARC is located on the first floor of the Florida Public Archaeology Network headquarters at 207 East Main St. (next to Fish House). Admission is free. PMA Presents Pat Regan: Roots & Remembrance Through Jan. 3 During this exhibition, artist Pat Regan will be debuting a new body of work at the Pensacola Museum of Art. As an artist, Regan garners much of her inspiration from her lifetime of painting as well as the red clay banks of her Mississippi childhood memories. Regan attended Pratt Institute in Venice, Italy where she studied art and architecture. UWF Fall Chamber Music Concert Series Dec. 3 The University of West Florida Department of Music will present an afternoon of chamber music on the first Wednesday of November and December at 12 pm in the Old Christ Church in historic Downtown Pensacola. Hot Glass, Cold Brew at First City Art Center Dec. 5 First City Art Center will hold its Hot Glass, Cold Brew event Fri., Dec. 5, from 5 to 9 pm at 1060 N. Guillemard St. This event is a fundraiser that directly supports First City Art Center and its programs. There is a suggested donation of $25 for non-members and $20 for members. Guests can choose to bring a cup from a previous HGCB and get $5 off. For those who sign up for a new FCAC membership on that evening, your entry will be free!
