Message from the Headmaster

We have a saying at Crescent School: “It’s about the boys.” It is fundamental to our mission Men of Character from Boys of Promise and the work we do to support the learning and wellbeing of our students. It’s a mantra taken up by our faculty and staff. Our single-minded focus helps to ground us and inspires us to strive for betterment in all that we do.

As one academic year closes and a new one begins, we have the opportunity to pause and reflect on the outcome of our collective effort. It is satisfying to recount our achievements and celebrate the great work that has taken place in support of our boys both inside and beyond the classroom.

The Crescent Report Card is a relatively new practice here. This publication reminds our community of our strategic goals, as established in our Strategic Plan 2015-2020 and describes what has been achieved over the past four years. It also captures many of the memorable highlights from the 20182019 academic year across virtually every facet of school life.

This is the fifth and final year of our current Strategic Plan. We intend to use this time to fulfill the remaining objectives that we set out to accomplish. Working together with the Board, we will also use the coming year to begin planning for our next Strategic Plan. I am certain that it too will deliver an unprecedented experience for all our boys. Because while we never waiver from our mission, we must also continually strive for growth and improvement, similar to our boys.

Message from the Chair of the Board

The 2018-2019 school year is in the books. As your Board Chair from September 2016 to June 2019, it is my unique privilege to reflect on how Crescent is doing from my vantage point as Board Chair, alumnus and Crescent parent.

The past three years have gone by very quickly and Crescent has accomplished many things in that time. Much of my tenure as Chair focused on helping to steer the “Our People” and “Our Place” pillars of the Strategic Plan 2015-2020.

This work took place in three stages.

First, Mr. Fellin and the leadership team addressed the challenge of building our Portrait of a Graduate. Next, the team articulated the academic plan (coined The Crescent Way) that details the integrated and intentional approach to Crescent’s curriculum and co-curricular program to deliver on the promise of our Portrait of a Graduate; and finally, they turned to what the campus of the future must look like to accomplish the mission.

We have achieved virtually everything we set out to do, and I am confident that what remains will be addressed in the year ahead.

I leave my post knowing that Crescent’s governance remains in very capable hands.

The Board of Governors – 17 dedicated men and women who give so much of their time to serve Crescent, led by new Board Chair Jamie Coulter – is committed to ensuring Crescent remains the fantastic place that it is. The future is boundless and I look forward to watching it unfold. I hope you read this Report Card with pride, and agree with me that we’ve earned an A+.

Our Portrait of a Graduate identifies the knowledge, skills and character strengths that we believe a graduate of Crescent School needs to achieve future success, wellbeing and purpose in his career, community and family life. It consists of three guiding questions and six essential qualities.

Our Strategic Plan 2015-2020 was created collaboratively by our Board of Governors and school management team. It demonstrates our commitment to the long-term growth and development of our school. The Plan establishes goals aligned with our people and our place.
