Rugby helps recovery, says Zac Guildford

SCOREBOARD Results

Zac Guildford says being involved with the Crusaders has helped enormously in his recovery from his alcohol problem. The little wing has been back for five matches and both he and the team management feel he has moved forward successfully after time at a rehabilitation clinic and putting the booze behind him. “I’m feeling good, I feel I’ve come a long way,” he said. “I think it’s about 106 days today, so I feel a lot happier. My mind’s a lot more at ease, and [I’m] just really proud of myself. “Rugby’s part of my recovery and being able to get back out there and have a go with the boys has been pretty good. I just need to find the tryline now.” So far, helped by being back in rugby, it had been “pretty easy”, he said. “But I know there will be tough times, so I can’t kid myself. “The first few weeks felt a bit foreign but I feel like I’m getting there now. Slowly building, and hopefully I can play some of my best rugby in the next week or two because it feels like I’m slowly getting there.” His contract with the Crusaders expires after

The Celtic Squash Club kicked off its winter league competition this week. Jane Lowe lost to Robbie Kok 1-3, John Surridge lost to Brendan Clarke 2-3, Pete Blacklow beat Gary Stratford 3-0, Pat Summerfield lost to Billy Nolan 2-3. Steve Devereux beat Chris O’Reilly 3-1, Jon Bond beat Mark O’Grady 3-2, Marie Kennedy beat Chris Thompson 3-1, Lucas Hooper lost to Steve Devereux 1-3. Ed Harrison beat Lawrence McCormick 3-2, Phil Andrew lost to Blair Horrell 0-3, Jock O’Connor beat James McCloy 3-1, Petr Holub lost to Mick Hooper 0-3, Ron Carlson beat Chrissie Stratford 3-0.

this campaign and some overseas clubs have approached him, but he said he did not know yet what he would do. “I’ve just been trying to concentrate on playing rugby. Hopefully in the next month or so be I’ll able to sort it out. I would like to stay in New Zealand but have lot of thinking to do before I make that decision.” Crusaders assistant coach Tabai Matson said the 24-year-old was “a changed man” and being back in the team environment had been really helpful for him. “I so impressed, when he arrived back from his programme he got in front of the team and must have spoken for 20 minutes - and I’d never heard him speak for two minutes. “For him to get up there and tell us everything was magnificent, and one of the things about our environment is it’s a levelling environment, so if you stick you head up you get your head knocked off. “We have a chipping culture and people get into each other and it creates a bit of a humour and a harmony in our group, but the senior players said what he is going through is not a laughing matter.” - APNZ
