Upper School Play

Synopsis of Scenes

The play takes place in a timeless Verona where two feuding families, the Montagues and Capulets reside.

ACT I

Fighting breaks out in the streets of Verona, forcing the Prince to intervene and demand peace between the feuding families. 

Lord Capulet throws a masquerade ball to introduce his daughter, Juliet, to Count Paris. Romeo and his friends decide to attend the ball uninvited. Juliet and Romeo fall in love at first sight. 

ACT II

Romeo, hiding from his friends, discovers Juliet’s balcony where she speaks of her love unaware he is listening. Romeo and Juliet decide to get married in secret. 

ACT III

Mercutio and Tybalt get into a brawl, resulting in their deaths and Romeo’s banishment.

ACT III (Continued)

Juliet receives the news of Tybalt’s death and Romeo’s banishment. Sister Lawrence, trying to console Romeo, devises a plan. Meanwhile, Juliet’s father insists upon her marriage to Paris, which sends her into a panic. 

ACT IV

Juliet procures a potion that will send her into a death-like sleep temporarily while Sister Lawrence sends for Romeo. The Capulets’ wedding plans are canceled after they find Juliet in a death-like sleep in her room. They begin to mourn. 

ACT V

When Romeo hears of Juliet’s death, he is heartbroken. Procuring lethal poison, he dies beside his beloved Juliet. When Juliet awakens and finds Romeo dead, she ends her own life. With their children gone, the Montagues and Capulets make a long overdue vow of peace and stop their fighting forever.
