AS ANYONE WHO CAME OF AGE IN THE NINETIES will tell you, the era had a distinct style. Sure, there was the ultra preppy look as highlighted in the cult classic 1995 film Clueless, but there was also an undercurrent of avant-garde grunge afoot (also on display in the flick). It was the height of O.G. supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington — who this fall recreated their iconic 1990 Vogue cover. It was the rise of the so-called heroin chic aesthetic, led by Kate Moss. Even today, she continues to steal the spotlight as the face of Yves Saint Laurent and on the runway for Bottega Veneta, where earlier this year she donned a nineties-inspired ensemble.

Then came the aughts, with its many fashion missteps — see ultra low-rise denim, Juicy Couture tracksuits, dresses-over-pants looks, and fedoras and trucker hats on the red carpet — that were well-documented given that the Internet had arrived in full force. It was around 2003, when I was sporting chunky hair highlights (yes, I did it) and Abercrombie & Fitch graphic tees, that I realized that nineties style had been a moment all its own.

Of course, every generation is wont to believe there’s something special about the time in which they grew up. But during a recent conversation with fashion photographer Erik Madigan Heck, he reaffirmed the inherent uniqueness of nineties style. Much like myself, he looked to magazines to connect him to the real world beyond the bounds of his Twin Cities upbringing. And he argues that the era was the peak of avant-garde fashion. For more hot takes from the contemplative creative — whose remarkable work has been seen the world over in the pages of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and in campaigns for Chanel, Valentino and the like — check out our feature story, “In Your Wildest Dreams” (page 110).

After a couple decades of increasingly homogenous style, I’m excited to see Gen Z take the fashion world by storm and destroy all the norms. In so many ways, it feels reminiscent of the nonconforming nineties, when prep and grunge — two ostensibly opposing concepts — lived in harmony. It seems the old impossible beauty ideals have been broken once and for all (good riddance)

Need proof? Just look to the catwalks, which are more inclusive these days thanks to trailblazers like Indigenous activist Quannah Chasinghorse, whose facial tattoos defy outdated beauty standards and reflect her Hän Gwich’in heritage, and Antiguan-American model Aaron Rose Philip, who is breaking barriers as the industry’s first Black transgender model with a physical disability. Or consider Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which busted box-office records this year by showcasing a wider range of lived experiences (even if they were all technically dolls) and calling into question the societal expectations placed on both women and men. It’s a not-so-subtle reminder that while we can honor the past with retro looks, we need to push toward a more just future where everyone feels seen, empowered to embrace their singular style and encouraged to practice radical self-love.

ANNE EISENHOWER ALWAYS KNEW

she wanted a life filled with beauty. As the granddaughter of President Dwight Eisenhower, she would ride her tricycle on the White House grounds. But it was the glamour of New York City that dazzled her, where in the 1980s and 1990s she became a celebrated designer, philanthropist and arts patron.

“Anne had flair, a creative orientation that flourished in her work as a designer and an artist,” her sister Susan explains. “She was drawn not to Washington, D.C., like the rest of us; she was a New Yorker through and through.”

It turns out she had quite a flair for jewelry as well. After Eisenhower’s unexpected passing in 2022 at the age of 73, Christie’s recently sold off her exceptional collection of baubles, taking in a staggering $11.5 million. Bijoux lovers from across the globe took part online, on the phone and in the auction room, where 31 pieces from this spectacular assortment went up for sale.

This was a collector’s collection to be sure. Eisenhower had a knack for knowing what to buy and when. The most coveted gems were of course featured, including diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, along with important historic and contemporary pieces. “Anne had the wherewithal to acquire incredible pieces of jewelry that once you’ve seen them, you never forget them,” notes Christie’s Jewelry Senior Advisor Lisa Hubbard, who had a longtime friendship with Eisenhower.

The star of the show was a jawdropping diamond and ruby Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet known as the Jarretière. Actress Marlene Dietrich bought the bauble in 1937 and wore it in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1950 film Stage Fright, then a year later at the Academy Awards. Eisenhower purchased the bracelet directly from Dietrich’s estate in 1992 then asked Van Cleef & Arpels to craft a complementing necklace and pair of earrings.

In spirited bidding from enchanted buyers around the world, the Jarretière bracelet sold for $4.5 million, capturing the high end of its early estimate. The earrings far exceeded estimates, bringing in $176,400, while the matching ruby Cascade necklace went for $1.1 million. In the end, this stellar jewelry suite represented not only exceptional value but also exquisite refinement.

Of course, good taste is what Eisenhower was known for. In the late 1970s, after working alongside design legend Dorothy Draper, she started her own interiors firm. In 1990, she was named one of Architectural Digest’s top 100 designers thanks to her traditional, uncluttered residential spaces that had a lived-in charm. “She was the sort of person who, when she walked into a room you noticed her — not because she was overthe-top, but because she sailed in and was simply an elegant presence,” Hubbard recalls.

The jewelry she collected carried that same élan. Her beloved Van Cleef & Arpels sapphire and diamond Waterfall necklace stunned with its geometric brilliance, selling for $819,000. Meanwhile, her Tiffany & Co. art deco diamond and multi-gem Moonlight Rose bracelet, unique for its scroll-like design, brought in $604,800 — a showstopper for sure. Although Eisenhower is celebrated for her exceptional style, she is equally known for her quiet generosity supporting causes like the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As her granddaughter Camila Mendoza explains, “While these jewels are indeed breathtaking, my grandmother is the real gem we are celebrating.”

WHEN YOU GROW UP IN A HOME BY BRUCE KADING, NOTHING compares to the nuanced layers found throughout. He and his team bring a special magic to all projects, be it a brownstone in New York City or a hunting lodge up north. From lighting to fabric, ambiance to authenticity, they treat each client like family while creating an artful sense of comfort and delight.

That’s exactly why the adult son of a longtime client turned to the Minneapolis interior designer when it came time to imagine his own family home some 30 years later. “It must have rubbed off on him one way or another,” Kading surmises. “Now he’s married with three young children, so he asked me to help out.”

The client had purchased a spacious shingle-style house in Edina originally built in the 1990s. With 7,500 square feet and five bedrooms, it boasts an open floor plan and magnificent millwork — but needed that Kading touch. “My childhood home was always so well coordinated with

careful attention to detail,” the homeowner shares. “We wanted the rooms to flow together and coordinate with each other, much like my parents’ home. Bruce is extraordinarily talented in accessorizing rooms to make them feel finished.”

One way Kading achieves his trademark warmth is with his deft sense of color, a careful mix of subtle hues with character and depth. In this abode, the wood paneling around the living room fireplace wall is painted one of the designer’s favorite moody blues, Benjamin Moore Bracken Slate. “It’s a muddy blue gray that gives the space a focal point that feels newer and younger,” he describes.

That same blue continues into the adjoining kitchen, where it adorns the woodwork of the new center island. A burnished pewter hood above the stove adds a note of luster, while nearby two brass ceiling lights offer a lovely mélange of metals. “It gives a punch to the whole space,” Kading explains. “I love combining materials and textures to make a space look

and feel as though it evolved over time.”

It definitely took some planning when it came to the home’s elegant coffered ceilings, which feature a gentle play of color. While the ceiling is painted a flat white, the wood beams are the same hue but in a satin finish. That ever subtle shift in sheen makes all the difference.

Quintessential Kading comfort is on full display in the family’s charming breakfast nook, where warm sunshine floods in. Here, a spirited assortment of pillows and patterns brings a sense of joy. “I like adding chairs on one side so it’s not all built in, making it feel a bit friendlier,” Kading points out. “The wallpaper is wonderful because the pattern has a sense of nostalgia to it yet it’s still very fresh looking.”

Throughout the home, on bookcases and consoles, is an inspired mingling of accessories that feel like they’ve been carefully collected over time. That’s no accident — Kading is a big believer in blending antiques and time-honored treasures into the design. “My team and I love repurposing favorite family pieces,” he explains. “We’ll often rewire vintage lamps to

add a real sense of quality and timelessness.”

But of course there’s always room for play in a Bruce Kading interior. Case in point: the chic little sporting club tucked into the lower level walkout. Here, a high-tech golf simulator provides year-round fun. Charming bistro tables let onlookers grab a seat, while antique golf clubs adorn the walls. “This is definitely my favorite room since I’m an avid golfer,” the homeowner says. “We knew we wanted a country club feel to the space, and Bruce really brought that vision to life.”

“WOMEN WOULD ASK OVER AND OVER AGAIN, ‘WHY don’t you do this for women?’” Martin Patrick 3 CEO Dana Swindler says of the wildly successful boutique and interior design firm. “And our response was always, ‘We’re a men’s store.’” But prior to the pandemic, women’s styles started trickling into the shop anyway. Now, there’s a fully fledged, dedicated department, where women are going to get a very stylish leg up on their fall fashion.

MP3, which got its start as an interior design company in 1994 under founder Greg Walsh, is no stranger to evolution. It began in a much smaller space, a mere 400 square feet in size just down the street from its famed spot in Minneapolis’s North Loop neighborhood, featuring the design firm and a handful of men’s accessories.

coffee shop Moose & Sadie’s. Because MP3 got in on the North Loop early, there was room to expand as demand and delight increased. Following their instincts — like realizing that womenswear should be fully realized within the shop — has always served Swindler and Walsh well, and they aren’t afraid to take risks to deliver what clients want.

The trick has been to keep everything evolving within the same point of view, which has a certain je ne sais quoi — hard to describe, but you know it when you see it. It is, at turns, urbane, sophisticated, witty and whimsical. It’s confident and stylish, but definitely not trendy.

“Martin Patrick 3 has always had a strong point of view,” shares Director of Women’s Buying Samantha Tousey. “This is an exciting new direction that will mirror the men’s experience.” Part of that, she adds, is understanding that intangible feeling you have when looking at something truly beautiful, like the Akris sleeveless houndstooth organza dress that caught Tousey’s eye while at market in New York City.

“Sometimes you buy things out of necessity, but more often, you buy something because it evokes a reaction of ‘I have to have it,’” she muses. “When building out the women’s assortment, we made sure to cover the essentials for a core wardrobe and also included some really amazing pieces that evoke that emotion.”

And Tousey would know, given her background in luxury retail. The University of Minnesota graduate navigated the fashion world with the likes of Chanel and Dior before being lured back to the Twin Cities. “I’m bringing that expertise to redefine the elevated shopping experience for women in Minneapolis and beyond,” she says. Indeed, MP3’s exceptional year-over-year growth is reshaping designer brands’ understanding of the Twin Cities shopper.

Walsh, who oversaw the design of the new department, wanted the space to feel light and airy in comparison to the more masculine areas of the boutique, including how the designer goods are displayed.

“We didn’t want the space to feel overwhelming or cluttered; we wanted to allow the shopper to discover each item and absorb the design detail and craftsmanship with intention,” he explains. “We wanted the space to feel luxe and calming, not overstimulating. As shoppers travel farther back into the new spaces, it is like a journey for the senses with an undeniably feminine feel, playing on the lighting, the fabrics, and even the home decor and furnishings we incorporated into the space.” Bonus: There’s ample space in and around the fitting rooms, encouraging fashionistas to relax, socialize and truly enjoy the shopping experience.

Tousey notes that the expansion is full of sophisticated pieces with a fashion edge — “classic with a twist,” as she puts it. She’s fresh off launching Akris and Gabriela Hearst in the store, adding to the who’s who roster of fashion houses on offer, like Rosie Assoulin, Brunello Cucinelli, Dries Van Noten, Dusan, Etro, La DoubleJ, Proenza Schouler and Toteme.

It’s all in service to the cultured, well-traveled MP3 woman. She knows it when she sees it, even if she can’t explain it. “She is a woman who looks at her wardrobe as an investment, often drawn to those items that are classically chic or alternative statement pieces that can evolve into heirloom fashion,” Walsh says.

Now, thanks to Martin Patrick 3, she doesn’t have to go to another city to find it — it’s right where she lives. And it won’t be like anything else, because it has the team’s often imitated but never duplicated viewpoint of elevated whimsy that stands alone. As Swindler concludes, “We definitely don’t want to be like everybody else.”

FROM THE VERY FIRST CONCEPTION OF THE LOUPE, I SOUGHT fine contemporary designers who are relevant and have a dialogue with the jewelry, design and fashion worlds. Having lived in New York City for most of my adult life, I am constantly inspired by eclectic, modern and sophisticated styles, and I wanted to bring this aesthetic of niche, high-end jewelry to the Midwest in an approachable and modest way. Simultaneously, as a native Minnesotan, it was very important to me to find a way to add value to the Minneapolis market. I believe in the power of brick-and-mortar, both to foster relationships and build community. Our physical store is now a touchpoint to do all of this as well as champion the artistry of the designers we carry.

The process of choosing these designers begins with understanding their point of view. We want to find jewelry that tells a story, that celebrates design and artistry. It is not just about the inherent beauty of a piece; it is about the potential relationship one can form with a piece over time. In this way, like modern heirlooms, these objects tell a story and become part of a dialogue, in one’s life and for future generations.

My background is in ceramic arts, and I’ve always had a natural appreciation for how things are made: the balance between form and function, the intricacies of craftsmanship, the consideration of materials. I am always inspired by our designers’ workmanship and attention to detail showcased throughout their collections.

A standout example of this is Brazilian designer Fernando Jorge, who reimagines wardrobe staples, creating jewelry that is distinctly sculptural and effortlessly sensual. His multi-chain necklace is composed of delicate 18-karat gold graduating parallel lines that offer an understated yet indisputably feminine look. Striking a balance between craftsmanship and innovation, he infuses his collections with movement, energy and a connection to natural elements. Using locally sourced and hand-carved gemstones and his signature gold finish, Fernando creates sophisticated jewelry, all with wearability in mind.

I get great inspiration from the extraordinary, innovative work of Brazil-based designer Silvia Furmanovich. A world traveler, she imbues her collections with the artistic traditions of a specific place and culture. In her own words, her design ethos is “not so much about creating beauty but seeking it out and recognizing the beauty that already exists in all things,” which inherently lends itself to a design approach that is elevated, sustainable and occasionally Old World. Her Marquetry collection is absolutely iconic, featuring fine jewelry and home accessories made from naturally colored salvaged wood from the Amazon.

In Silvia’s Japan collection, traditional Japanese bamboo weaving is intricately paired with precious stones and her signature marquetry technique is married with vintage textiles. After discovering a box of textile swatches from the Meiji period in Kyoto, she incorporated Nishijin an

iconic textile with richly colored threads — into the collection, an homage to traditional kimono dress. Rich with Japanese motifs, the swatches depict cranes, clouds, chrysanthemums and other symbols that reflect personal and social identity. In Silvia’s Obi clutch, pale green floral marquetry provides a backdrop to a stunning swatch of vintage gold-toned silk, synthesizing the historical and the contemporary, the refined and the raw. Silvia’s travels across Uzbekistan inspired yet another of my favorite offerings. Within her Silk Road collection, she explores diverse textile traditions through a series of miniature-scale silk tapestry earrings. Composed of multicolored strands of pure silk and adorned with diamond, garnet and morganite set in 18-karat yellow gold, Silvia’s one-of-a-kind earrings each contain more than 1,600 meticulous knots, reflecting a traditional Uzbek design. Whether working with local silk weavers or incorporating vintage textiles, Silvia’s Silk Road collection honors tradition and suggests historical and worldly connections. I see her jewelry not only as exquisite works of art, but artifacts that create a dialogue with other cultures.

Overarchingly at The Loupe, we want to offer jewelry that transcends trends — that will endure and be passed down. Trained in classical goldsmithing, Caroline Ellen reimagines classical silhouettes in modern forms. Her design process finds beauty in simplicity, and we see this in the way she considers every detail, from 18-karat gold bangles with carefully set diamonds to her 20-karat gold engraved collection featuring Greek proverbs. With refined design and rarefied elegance, every piece is a timeless treasure.

I delight in rounding out our collections with a few super special pieces, knowing there is the chance one will catch a very specific eye and speak directly to that person. Praised for her use of kaleidoscopic color, Irene Neuwirth approaches her Gemmy Gem collection by using unexpected vibrant-colored stones to create beautiful, truly unique mosaics. We see this throughout her Tropical Flower collection, where meticulously hand-carved stone flowers are paired with bold center stones, creating one-of-a-kind pieces — flowers that last forever.

The designers we work with have a distinct and compelling point of view, which they translate from collection to collection. Overall, they have a refined design aesthetic and display meticulous craftsmanship. It is inspiring to discover cutting-edge design and innovation, and I love keeping a pulse on emerging designers and being able to offer new and diverse perspectives to our clients and community. Jewelry, ultimately, is extremely personal; it is all about what speaks to you, how you want to express yourself, what sentiments you want to capture. It can even have the talismanic power to remind us of who we are, where we have been and where we hope to go. Beyond the beauty, I love the almost alchemical quality that jewelry possesses: to speak, to tell a story, to become part of one’s personal journey. At The Loupe, we are honored to continue the art of storytelling through jewelry.

FALL IS THE TIME WHEN MANY PEOPLE TURN THEIR ATTENTION TO FOOTBALL. Some of us turn a lot of attention to it. We hear ourselves explaining to loved ones that, yes, there was a game we just watched, but now there is another game, and they’re all very important and there’s no way to possibly, under any circumstances, miss them.

I’ve lived in New York City for more than 20 years, but that has not diminished my profound love for my hometown Minnesota Vikings. I believe you’ve heard of them. The Vikings do not always make it easy to be loved. They are a good team, often close to being a great team. But they’ve never become the greatest team, and, alas, Vikings fans of many generations have been hurt many times. Yet we still believe. And if you’re a serious fan, you might find yourself headed downtown to the big game as we try to beat our rivals from Green Bay or Chicago. Now what should we wear?

Let’s start with what we shouldn’t wear. Not purple face paint, if for no other reason than it might end up streaked with tears (particularly if this is a playoff game). Generally speaking, you don’t want to wear anything that looks as if you’re about to invade the European mainland a thousand years ago. So no Viking helmets, fake blond braids or plastic armor. I know you live and die with your team, but I might counsel against a jersey, too — because football jerseys look far better on actual football players or wide-eyed children rooting for them.

What a grown man should wear to the game requires a little more nuance. First, let’s talk color. Vikings fans, as we know, bleed purple (though this advice works for whichever team you support). Start with a scarf. The wonderful corduroy scarves schoolboys wore, usually in the UK or at East Coast prep schools, are the perfect sporting accessory. You might find this so agreeable that you end up wearing it in your civilian life. You can track these down from classic New England stores like the Andover Shop.

You’re going to want a really good — and very lucky — hat. You might consider a baseball cap for the big game. But I’m not going with the latest thing from the souvenir booth; let’s get a little more creative. We need a Vikings hat and, if you don’t have an old one yourself, then it’s time to get on eBay and look for a hat with some personality. Without too much trouble, I found a good corduroy hat that says “Vikings” in a simple gold font. This is the good stuff.

Now purple is not a color most of us wear very often, but you have to do what you have to do. So I’m thinking about a purple knit tie from, say, Charvet. I know very few people would consider this approach, but they should! Who wears a tie to a football game? Well, coaches used to dress very well patrolling the sidelines in a coat, tie and even a raffish hat. That’s no longer the case, but you can still maintain the tradition. If you arrive at a game in a tie, you might be ushered right to the owner’s box to join the only other person wearing a tie (besides the TV announcers). But that’s alright!

If you want to get in the merchandise game, you have to commit and really do your research. I love those windbreakers that the late great Vikings coach Bud Grant wore to games. Or those old gray sweatshirts that say “Property of the Minnesota Vikings” in faded letters. These will definitely win you admiring glances from your fellow fans.

Not everybody reading this is a Vikings fan, so a good guideline for any game this fall is to wear sporting clothes that translate well, like a rugby shirt. These look great under any jacket, with just the right amount of color showing through. I envision olive-colored cords or easy-fitting khakis, some L.L. Bean duck boots, maybe a barn jacket or chore coat (cotton if you’re indoors and wool or waxed cotton if you’re in the elements). Imagine you’re back in college standing on the sidelines cheering on your team — a little twist of Ivy style is welcome. If you’re attending a game outside, what about a purple Shaggy Dog sweater from J. Press? You can whisk it off and wave it around your head when the Vikings win.

Many men have one old tweed jacket that’s been destroyed over the years. Now’s the time to take it out of retirement. This will look a lot less fussy if you’re wearing a cap and jeans or chinos. You can also wear a Vikings pin on your lapel. And that’s the spirit here: to stylishly support your team. Hopefully our next decision will be what to wear to watch the Vikings in the Super Bowl. A man can dream, can’t he?

A MONTH BEFORE MY TRIP TO JOALI Being, the resort sends me a sixpage questionnaire. It inquires about my height and weight; my eating, sleeping and exercise habits; and the frequency of my bowel movements. Um, come again?

Wellness is central to everything at this boutique venture from Turkish entrepreneur Esin Güral Argat. She opened the ultra luxe property on the island of Bodufushi in 2021 with a four-pillar focus: mind, skin, microbiome and energy. Its spa and fitness center are the largest in the Maldives and feature a salt-inhalation room, a cryotherapy chamber and more. The food is equally health-conscious, curated by an integrative medicine specialist to check various low-calorie, gluten-free and sustainable boxes. One of the first things guests do upon arrival is meet with an ayurvedic therapist who uses a bioresonance machine to assess their lifestyle.

The daughter of a scientist, I’m a born skeptic, so the idea of using electromagnetic frequencies to detect toxins sounds like hocus pocus to me. Then again, I’m not your typical wellness devotee. I have never eat-pray-loved my way to a higher self, and I bristle at the notion that a stranger can fix whatever ails me.

I get that for some folks, wellness is an identity. But for me, it’s a painful reminder of my personal failings: I weigh too much, I work too hard and I’m a B student at most things I take on, from painting to motherhood. I don’t need a resort to tell me what I already know.

And yet, I’m curious. What if a mindbending, gut-mending, energy-renewing week in paradise actually works?

My stay begins at sister resort JOALI on nearby Muravandhoo island. The 73-villa property offers the classic overwaterbungalow experience with a twist: There’s art everywhere, including a manta-shaped treehouse by South African artist Porky Hefer that’s bookable for private meals. The aquatic center rents water toys, but I’m content just snorkeling in the crystalline sea behind my villa. I’m joined by darting reef sharks and clown triggerfish, arguably the most extra marine life in an ocean filled with showoffs. When I’m not underwater, I’m strolling along the white sandy beaches.

These first three days are a joyful blur of deep-tissue massages, sake tastings and indulgent Turkish breakfasts. I eat and drink more than I should because soon I will ship off to JOALI Being boot camp.

Turns out, I had nothing to fear. Nobody confiscates my snacks upon check-in or shakes me awake at dawn for a grueling hike. The thatched roofs of the 68 biophilic villas recall Scottish croft houses, if ye olde cottages had private infinity pools. Guest rooms boast a metallophone for “sonic healing,” a guidebook of mindful breathing exercises and a minibar

stocked with sparkling tea (but no alcohol). There’s matcha granola at breakfast and grilled tuna steaks for dinner. If this is deprivation, sign me up.

And sign up I do — for a soothing “mind-therapy” massage, a guided tour along the island’s Discovery Sound Path, and a sound bath meditation, which begins with a symphony of singing bowls and ends with the clang of a gong. My favorite, however, is the perfume-making workshop at the herbology center. With the help of a Turkish aromatherapist, I concoct an earthy fragrance composed of neroli, patchouli, vetiver and clary sage. (Even skeptics like to smell nice.)

I also go Zen hunting at the resort’s hydrotherapy hall. My Watsu session, a form of underwater shiatsu, takes place in a tiled spa with a domed ceiling

and heated pool. It’s like having a Turkish hammam all to myself — except the pool is too warm for my liking and I start to feel nauseated from the 360-degree swishing. Vertigo forces me to make a quick (and messy) exit. The therapist later tells me that Watsu is powerful stuff; everyone reacts differently and some bodies need to purge. (This is probably the nicest thing you can say to someone who has just puked on themselves.)

I have better luck with cryotherapy, which subjects users to extreme cold to increase blood flow and relieve chronic pain. It is set to a chilly -125°F — that’s nothing for a cold-blooded Minnesotan like me, I think as I strip down. A staffer cranks up Daddy Yankee tunes over the speakers, and I step inside the sub-zero chamber. Within seconds, the hair in my nostrils ices over. I’m breathing more smoke than Snoop Dogg and dancing maniacally to keep warm. I’m sure I look absurd, but the rush is exhilarating. This three-minute polar plunge unleashes a flood of endorphins that makes me feel like I’m on ecstasy (and judging by the swimsuit-and-Crocs-withsocks getup I’m wearing, I wouldn’t look out of place at a nineties rave). Yet the high is all-natural.

Truth be told, I’m floored by how much I’m enjoying myself. Who is this new smoothie-swilling, mantra-chanting, cryo-raving hippie and where did she bury the cranky old me?

Of course, JOALI Being is a rarefied, alternate reality that bears little resemblance to my real life with its work pressures and a buck-wild toddler. But for all its woo-woo, the wellness retreat did its job: It reminded me that it’s OK to think about myself sometimes — I’m worth it.

In 2022, just in time for spring fashion week, a 16th century seminary that had been closed to the public for decades was unveiled in the heart of Milan. Under the direction of the Lungarno Collection by Ferragamo, the building has been transformed into a house of worship of a new order. It’s the seventh hotel under the Italian fashion family’s hospitality arm and the brand’s biggest feat to date — the land leased from the Catholic Church and meticulously restored over the past 10 years to bring the austere stone structure into the modern era. Clean lines, warm woods and rich colors create a handsome yet streamlined sensibility across the 73 guest rooms. The modern feel complements a natural stone patina and historic views over the courtyard, which has served as a catwalk for Ferragamo and is otherwise bustling with shopping, dining and strolling passersby. The Piazza del Quadrilatero is perhaps the most fashionable part of the entire project: a modern-day arcade for runway models, hotel guests and the public — and the perfect spot for requisite people watching.

Nearly two centuries ago, a young French trunk maker named Louis Vuitton surely wouldn’t have imagined his handmade luggage being toted across the globe. But today, the designer’s signature monogrammed cases are transported to LVMH hotels from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean. Luxury conglomerate Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton owns more than 50 properties under high-end brands Belmond and Cheval Blanc, including this latest reimagining of a 72-room barefoot-luxe stay along a private stretch of the Riviera Maya. But even with Vuitton behind it, Maroma’s redesign feels more local than worldly. Case in point: Mexican artisans were commissioned for the intricate millwork, wall textiles and painted Saltillo tiles. Don’t miss the bath amenities by boutique Mexican perfumer Xinú and the gauzy caftans crafted by Collectiva Concepción out of Mexico City.

PALAZZO VERSACE DUBAI

Versace was an early influencer of haute hospitality, opening its first resort on Australia’s Gold Coast more than two decades ago. When that original opulent hotel shuttered this summer, it left a single palazzo in Dubai to carry on the venerable Versace name. Thankfully, the Emirati version can hold its own. A 215-room behemoth on the Jaddaf waterfront, it combines Italian Renaissance architecture, French Baroque design and a touch of 1980s South Beach style. You’ll notice silken fabrics and chinoiserie patterns, plus crystal chandeliers presiding over gold and pastel palettes. Here, the marriage of brand and destination is a perfectly over-the-top pairing. Forget you’re in the desert for a moment and take your pick from three pools and nine culinary concepts. While the palazzo is situated near the tip of the Arabian Peninsula, you’d swear you were on a bygone version of the European continent.

These master chocolatiers are always coming up with new flavors, often inspired by the tropical fruits and desserts of their childhood. The vanilla rum truffle, for example, is a riff on their father’s favorite baba au rhum. “Our kids are our brand ambassadors, and the whole family is our test kitchen,” says Isabel. You’ll find bars, bonbons, cakes, cookies and more at their Coral Gables storefront — and you may even glimpse chocolatiers working in the kitchen through the glass panel behind the counter.

Songstress Jennifer Lopez named Garcia Nevett one of her favorite Latina-owned businesses, and the acclaim keeps rolling in. Try the tupelo honey cardamom, rum apricot, and chili caramel bonbons, all of which earned accolades at the International Chocolate Awards. And stock up on guava sandwich cookies dipped in dark chocolate to take home (trust us on this one).

It’s only fitting that the Rubell Museum’s restaurant serves culinary works of art as exquisite as the contemporary artwork adorning the walls. Classic tapas like truffled tortilla Española (Spanish omelet), slices of Ibérico ham, and gambas al ajillo with garlicky Key West pink shrimp all pair wonderfully with a Spanish cider or gin and tonic. There are a few surprises, too, like butterflied whole branzino drenched in a rich fish broth/olive oil glaze as well as smoked vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Executive Chef Carlos Garcia was born in Venezuela and honed his cooking chops at Spanish hot spots El Bulli, El Celler de Can Roca and Mugaritz, one of the most esteemed Basque eateries in San Sebastián. Unsurprisingly, Leku is a favorite venue for private parties during Art Basel. The dining room opens onto a foliage-filled garden, and the industrial, art-centric design is balanced with lush subtropical plants.

This charming concept store in Coconut Grove is Miami’s best kept shopping secret for an effortlessly chic look. Fashion maven Natalie Pons makes everyone feel like an old friend, styling each guest from head to toe in the most flattering pieces. The wardrobe assortment here is refined but relaxed, including denim, tees, sweats, knits and dresses. Plus most of the accessories on offer are from female-run brands like Clare V. and Kerri Rosenthal.

Fresh off his first Michelin star for Stubborn Seed last year, Top Chef champ Jeremy Ford continues to push Miami’s palate with his new Coral Gables eatery. The menu is meant to be shared, starting with table snacks like jamón Ibérico croquetas and house-cured coriander guanciale. Lots of global spices are incorporated, like berbere and persimmon jam to brighten up chicken liver mousse, and turmeric vinaigrette on a seemingly simple but absolutely delicious salad of local lettuces. Order the 44-ounce wagyu tomahawk for the table right away if you’re so inclined; it takes an hour to prepare but is well worth it. Desserts, like the apple Dutch baby pancake by pastry chef Ana De Sa Martins, are a must. If you normally skip sweets, the foie gras green apple truffle tart is listed as an appetizer but is a picture-perfect finish.

SUPERBLUE

Since opening in May 2021, Superblue has quickly become Miami’s premier immersive art experience, pushing the boundaries of what a museum can and should be, with 30,000 square feet of flexible space for presentations of large-scale works, along with performances, workshops and family programs. The inaugural exhibition, Every Wall is a Door, features James Turrell’s disorienting “Ganzfeld” installation in monochromatic blue with reflection holograms and Es Devlin’s “Forest of Us,” inspired by the bronchial trees that exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide within our bodies. Viewers walk through the film into a mirror maze before contemplating light boxes by Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado depicting deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. And don’t miss “Pulse Topology,” an immersive biometric artwork consisting of 3,000 suspended light bulbs, each of which glimmers to the heartbeat of different participants.

Even the outdoor Blue Rider cafe, constructed of shipping containers, is a veritable art exhibit, transformed by British-Nigerian multidisciplinary artist Yinka Ilori with colorful murals and layered patterns showcasing Nigerian parables and West African fabrics.

In deep conversation with Editor-in-Chief Kate Nelson, famed photographer Erik Madigan Heck discusses creating his painterly fantasy worlds, looking to art history to tell the future, and drawing a line between art and fashion.

Step into Erik Madigan Heck’s ethereal realm and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination. Born and raised in the Twin Cities, the famed photographer is regularly called upon by the world’s top fashion houses and magazines — the likes of Valentino, Carolina Herrera and Comme des Garçons as well as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar — to craft his signature fantasy worlds. He has been tapped by commercial clients including Nike, Levi’s and BMW, and in 2012 became the youngest creative to shoot Neiman Marcus’ iconic Art of Fashion campaign. His work has been displayed the world over, including at Minneapolis’s own Weinstein Hammons Gallery. Considered one of the most innovative artists in contemporary photography, he has received accolades including a Forbes 30 Under 30 nod, an International Center of Photography Infinity Award, a FOAM Fotografiemuseum talent award and an Art Directors Club gold medal. And rightly so.

Heck’s love of art started at an early age, with his late painter mom and his avid collector dad ensuring he had a steady diet of creative pursuits, including weekly visits to the Minneapolis Institute of Art and Walker Art Center. “I had a very idyllic childhood splitting my time between Excelsior, a tiny village, and Edina, a very affluent white suburb,” says the 40-year-old artist. “My mom taught me how to paint, and my dad collects Papua New Guinea art, so I grew up surrounded by all these tiny statues, shields and spears.” These days, he calls rural Connecticut home but spends much of his time working in London and Paris.

It was during high school at Benilde-St. Margaret’s that he delved into the world of photography. Newly equipped with a 35-millimeter Canon EOS 630 gifted by his mom — the same lens he uses to this day — he established

his first aesthetic: moody black and white. The reasoning?

“I was very conservative with how I thought art needed to be and had a very classical sense of what photography was,” he explains. “When you study photography, you start at the beginning with Henri CartierBresson, Edward S. Curtis, and all the early pioneers of black and white. Then you get to the sixties, with William Eggleston and others introducing color photography as art photography. No one had really made color photography great that I could see. Around the time I got into photography, digital photography was just starting, but it looked awful. The only manipulation you could do was these really crass levels that created really bad art. So I decided I was going to be a purist and only do black and white.”

Indeed, the deep appreciation for art history that influenced him in the very beginning still informs his work today. “When you look at art history, everything that came after the late 1800s has had a shelf life,” he notes. “Painting and sculpture are the only mediums that will never stop; they are always changing and are just as relevant as they were 400 years ago. Everything else has a very finite timeline. Black-and-white photography ended in the sixties. Color film photography ended in the late nineties. Digital photography ended a year ago with AI. It’s just an acknowledgement that when you start using a medium that’s dead, your work can only be based in nostalgia. At this stage, I’m more interested in what comes next as opposed to looking backward. I’m super fascinated by AI and what that’s going to do to digital photography.” (More on AI later.)

Before Heck zeroed in on photography, his teenage creative interests ranged from music to fashion to digital art (and he still dabbles in multiple mediums to this day). “If I were to make a hierarchy of art mediums, music has always been my No. 1 thing,” he says. “But I’m not an inherently talented musician. As a teen, I DJed a lot and spent all my money on records; I wanted to be a hip-hop producer.”

His dad’s house in Excelsior was just minutes from Prince’s Paisley Park, yet Heck didn’t listen to the Purple One’s storied songs until after he’d left the Twin Cities. “He’s obviously a legend, but I didn’t grow up worshiping him like a lot of my friends did,” he explains. “Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were also legends who were pretty underappreciated; a lot of people didn’t know they produced Janet Jackson and a whole bunch of amazing tracks. When I grew up, we had a lot of hometown heroes who were appreciated elsewhere much more than they were in Minneapolis.”

He was equally fascinated by fashion. “I was in high school in 1998 to 2002, which was arguably the peak of avantgarde fashion,” he shares. “You had Belgian designers like Ann Demeulemeester, Martin Margiela and Dries Van Noten and Japanese designers like Yohji Yamamoto. As a kid coming of age in Minneapolis, fashion let me connect with the rest of the world, because it was truly the stage for the world coming together in a very avant-garde, punk rock way. It was still really underground, so as a 14-year-old studying fashion, I sort of felt like I was in a secret club. And I wanted to be a part of that world.”

After staying true to his black-and-white approach for nearly a decade, Heck’s viewpoint began to broaden upon moving to Paris in his early twenties. “When I was there, I started shooting 8-by10-inch Polaroids, and that’s when I started dabbling in color,” he recalls. “By that point, I had put in my 10,000 hours in the dark room with black-andwhite photography and was getting bored; I was ready to try something new. Plus Photoshop was already really great by then, so I could make the photograph I wanted to make.” Thus began his love affair with the color-soaked ethereal imagery that has become his trademark.

Ann Demeulemeester, once an inspiration, soon became a friend and collaborator. Haider Ackermann followed, along with a bevy of other burgeoning fashion designers. “It was the very underground part of fashion that unfortunately doesn’t exist anymore,” he says. “I never really wanted to shoot for fashion magazines per se. I started my own, which wasn’t really a magazine and wasn’t really fashion; I was collaborating with fashion designers to make art for five or six years until just after graduate school. At that point, I started getting commissioned by magazines, and that’s how I got into it.”

It was during his nearly decade-long tenure in New York City — including getting his MFA from Parsons School of Design — that he founded Nomenus Quarterly. Deemed Heck’s self-paved “golden pathway” to success, the definition-defying publication featured work by designers like Demeulemeester, Jean Paul Gaultier and Dries Van Noten as well as artists like Christian Boltanski, Lucian Freud, Kiki Smith and Lawrence Weiner. It wasn’t really a publication at all, but rather a limited-edition box containing prints of oft-unseen artist etchings and photographs. It was at once exclusive — the dozen or so boxes per run cost some $7,500 at its peak — and universal since it was available online for free. Much like the artist himself, it was utterly enigmatic.

So for Heck, where does fashion end and art begin — or are they one and the same? “I don’t think anybody of a critical mind would say that fashion

is art,” he posits. “Because fashion is functional firstly, it cannot be art. So even in the most sculptural abstract idea of fashion, like Viktor & Rolf, it is still a wearable item and therefore negates itself as being art. However, I think there is so much craftsmanship and beauty in fashion when you actually look at how things are made and the ideas that go into them. You can make a compelling case that it comes close.”

“Fashion is fashion, and I think it’s fine to just be what it is,” he continues. “I don’t think fashion needs the accolade of being labeled art with a capital A; that’s never what it wanted to be. It’s a symptom of society needing to label everything these days, and people believe that if you call something art, it makes it more grandiose. Fashion is fashion — an object you put on your body. Food is food — nourishment for your body. Art, to me, has no purpose other than to exist for the sake of pure delight. A painting is a painting. A photograph is a photograph. You don’t wear it or eat it. They just exist for what they are.”

Heck has made a name for himself creating art with fashion. The influence behind his ethereal aesthetic goes back to his early art history education. “I grew up looking at mostly French impressionist painting, and most of it was very colorful and romantic showing people in nature,” he notes. “I think when you’re bombarded with that as a child, it seeps into your brain and shapes your worldview for what is good art.”

But the acclaim and adoration he now regularly receives wasn’t instantaneous. “When I went to graduate school, I wanted to make very romantic photographs — but the contemporary art world doesn’t necessarily like that,” he recalls. “There was a lot of ‘Why?’ The answer for me is that there are enough things in the everyday world that give us reasons to be cynical, scared or upset. All you have to do is go on your social media feed and you would think the world is ending in 10 minutes.

So when I make artwork, I want it to be beautiful and make people happy, because I feel that’s the responsibility we have as artists now.”

His is a refreshing if not overly popular take. “It’s definitely not an in-vogue perspective on art,” he admits. “I find a lot of contemporary photography to be very cynical, even the work of [Minneapolis artist] Alec Soth, who I adore. But there’s no surface between his lens and the people he’s photographing; it’s just this 1:1 relationship. Whereas I like the sort of dream of a film that takes me to a different place rather than just showing me what’s exactly in front of your eyes.”

Heck’s signature fantastical worlds might give the impression of being created in Photoshop, but they are in fact the real deal. Much of it is captured using that same lens he received as a teen, with little manipulated in post other than amping up the color for visual effect. “If something is shot in studio, we build everything; if it’s shot outside, that’s just nature — I can’t take credit for that,” he notes. “But I don’t invent anything in postproduction.” Given that, does he see a future where his work is threatened by AI?

“Anybody who says AI is a threat doesn’t quite understand art history,” Heck affirms. “The exact same thing was said when photography was introduced in the 1800s. Every single painter was like, ‘Oh my God, painting is dead.’ Obviously that didn’t happen. The other thing is that AI is not sentient; it still takes a human to tell it what to do. There’s no difference between giving AI a prompt and pointing your camera somewhere and clicking it. You still have to sample from something. So, if you’re taking a picture of the world, you’re sampling what’s in front of you. If you’re creating an AI image, you’re sampling your own work or something from the Internet. You can always still take a picture; you don’t have to use AI. I think it’s only something to worry about when we cross that threshold of

the computer actually thinking for itself. But I’m not a science fiction buff, so I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about that.”

In addition to his fashion photography, Heck has also been tapped to shoot portraiture of notable figures including President Joe Biden, the late great Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, singers Adele and Taylor Swift, and Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, among others. Though a rare honor, the experience is quite a departure from his usual work.

“It’s always very flattering to be asked to shoot portraits, but it’s more of a young man’s game,” he says. “It’s grueling because you’re usually told the night before, you can’t plan for anything and you generally have less than 20 minutes with somebody. If it’s a president, you probably have three to five minutes to make a picture. There’s so much pressure to make something amazing. I actually thrive in those situations, so I was fine with it. But you have to ask yourself why you’re doing it.”

“I think a lot of it comes down to ego so you can tell your friends, or so you have it in your back pocket as a reputation builder,” he continues. “I did most of those editorial portraits in my late twenties when I wasn’t married and didn’t have kids. All I had was my career that I was trying to build and build and build. But now, I would be much more thoughtful about it. Like if I were to photograph a politician, I wouldn’t want to be a tool of propaganda for somebody I didn’t agree with politically. Even with celebrities and musicians, when I ask myself why I would do it now, it would have to be a very compelling reason.”

In addition to the time limitations, Heck also has less creative control given all the players involved, including the subject, the manager, the publicist, the magazine’s editorial team, and on and on. “When you photograph a celebrity or public figure, you’re more constrained in your time and ability to create something personal, whereas in fashion you have

much more creative flexibility,” he says. “But both are great for creating; sometimes tight constraints make better work. With fashion, most of the time I’m able to creative direct the whole thing. There are still parameters, like maybe we need to shoot in Scotland. But within that, I can generally do whatever I like — except pick the dresses, of course.”

He tries to shoot every project, whether editorial or commercial, as if it’s personal work. His lauded 2021 book The Garden is the culmination of a six-year daily photography practice shot at his charming Connecticut home, where he and his then-wife relocated in late 2016 to raise their sons. “I tend to get very bored every August because the fashion industry shuts down,” he recalls. “Bri finally said, ‘Why don’t you photograph me and our kids?’ So she forced my hand in a way, but it turned out to be amazing. But I didn’t set out to make it a book.”

The popular coffee table tome features his trademark romantic photography of Bri and their two older sons, Felix and Winston, paired with poetry he wrote surrounding his mother’s 2020 passing from metastatic breast cancer. But, as Heck points out, it’s more fantasy than family album.

“It seems like a dream in hindsight,” he notes. “It was this fairy tale that I was able to make with my ex-wife and kids at the time, which was great, but I don’t view it as a memento. It wasn’t like we were just laying around in trees in dresses; we would set aside time to go make pictures. It was a lot easier when the children were smaller, because it was fun for them and they didn’t really care about the camera. Then they hit a certain age and stopped wanting to be in the pictures, which kind of ruins it.”

The concept also morphed into a way for Heck to make a living during the pandemic, when the fashion world came to a screeching halt. “It was very convenient that we had been photographing Bri and the children because it allowed us to continue working,” he explains. “Companies would send us clothing, Bri would model, and I would photograph. It was an amazing thing to have during the pandemic when nobody was working in my industry.”

Although they moved to Connecticut on a whim based on a recommendation, it suits Heck well. It’s not unlike his own idyllic upbringing in the Twin Cities, which remains one of his favorite destinations. “I think Minneapolis is one of the best cities in the country

for its livability,” he shares.

“The way it’s structured as a city is very European. You have a lot of likeness to Copenhagen, Denmark, and Stockholm, Sweden, with the lakes. You have quaint little neighborhoods, like Linden Hills, and you have access to a big city downtown if you want. But it’s still very livable. New York City is the antithesis of that; it’s like a concrete terminator that sucks the soul out of you if you don’t leave every weekend. Whereas in Minneapolis, you can have a very relaxed, easy life while still being in a city.”

A decided sense of purpose is driving him these days, a conscious choice he committed to on Instagram, where he’s prone to getting candid. “I think that’s probably just from having three young sons and watching the world change so drastically,” he says. “When you’re a parent and you interact with other families and kids on the playground, it is pretty crazy how you notice an erosion of manners and civility. I experience the same thing in business dealings; the way magazines commission you and the relationships you have are very different now. There seems to be a lack of kindness these days. So I think it is a combination of wanting things to be better for everybody and also turning 40 this year — a natural point in your life when you have to stop and ask yourself, ‘What am I doing?’”

So when it comes to art history, does Heck think he’ll be remembered as a defining figure of this era? “One could hope, but that’s obviously not up to me,” he demurs. “It’s tricky because there’s so much art being made now. I was very lucky to start when I did, because you could still put your stamp on the world. It’s not that it was less competitive, but there were far fewer people making photographs on the world stage because we didn’t have Instagram.”

“And while it’s a good thing that everybody has a voice, I do think it has possibly changed the world for the worse because there’s a lot of noise now,” he continues. “Visual literacy has been diluted because we’re so overexposed to things. It’s a very different world today. But hopefully people still know my work and like it — that’s all I can ask for.” While it remains to be seen how Heck goes down in art history, chances are his enduring ethereal creations will stand the test of time.

HENRI INTERIORS PUTS A PSYCHEDELIC SPIN ON A WAYZATA RESIDENCE.

FOR A FAMILY HOME IN WAYZATA, HENRI INTERIORS WENT A LITTLE wild. The starting point was a stately 11,000-square-foot structure where every inch was regal and refined. The only issue was that the family was entirely not.

Joe and Kari Kazer wanted a lively place for their four kids that would fit their relaxed family vibe and showcase his psychedelic art — yet not feel like a museum. After an extensive search, the couple instantly clicked with Amanda Lorenz, owner and principal designer of Henri Interiors, who was able to expertly walk the tricky tightrope of softening the estate’s stately edges while keeping the interiors just edgy enough.

“When we bought the house, we saw so much potential in the architecture, but a lot of it just didn’t feel like us,” Kari explains. “Amanda was able to warm it up and make it feel more like us.”

Getting that comfy, cozy feel was a challenge given the starting point. For one, the style was over-the-top with what Lorenz calls lots of “pomp and circumstance,” from second story gated lookouts to ornate ironwork at every

turn. Butter yellow walls were accented with dark woodwork and paneling. “It was very opulent, and these people are so low-key,” she says. “We needed to make everything way more approachable.” An additional challenge was the scale; it was so overwhelming with vast, voluminous rooms that needed to be reconfigured into livable everyday spaces.

“It’s almost like the great room was a grand ballroom,” Joe recalls. To size down this open space, Lorenz created what he dubs “little scenes with bohemian corners.” First up, the designer modernized the ironwork on those lookouts and swapped out the chandeliers for whimsical lighting in black and white. The walls were promptly painted white, along with the rest of the house, for a clean backdrop that showcases Joe’s artwork and those original arches that made the home architecturally interesting in the first place.

“So much of the renovation was about unmasking elements of the home,” Joe says. “It was really oppressive how all the finishes were universally applied. It just distracted from the architecture.” Lorenz agrees, adding that a lot of the original abode circa 2006 worked well — it was just hard to get back to that.

and lots of little stools. “For young families, I like using utilitarian objects to offset all the big pieces,” notes Lorenz. Here, earthy, textural stools do double duty as side tables and add to the overall ease since they’re mobile and therefore super kid-friendly, which was important for her design philosophy for this project. “These kids are just as fun as their parents with interests and lives of their own,” she adds. “We wanted to create an environment where they’re encouraged to be fun and vivacious.”

In stripping things down to nail that relaxed, casual feel, most of the wall coverings had to go. Previously, nearly every wall and angled alcove (and there were many upstairs) was covered in some type of treatment, from grass cloth to patterns. But much like the rich wood paneling (which was all painted white or a color), it felt what the couple and designer collectively call “oppressive.”

Similarly, one of the kids’ bedrooms upstairs was cloaked in heavy carpet, thick textiles and wall coverings, which were high-end yet suffocating. “It was like there was a turtleneck on everything,” Joe jokes. “They just took it all too seriously.” This was yet another opportunity to infuse some playfulness, which took shape via a turquoise window nook where the blue color saturates the surrounding millwork — a technique Lorenz used again on the bar downstairs. Here, black-on-black millwork pops against the white walls, creating a focal point that’s artsy and mod.

In the big traditional dining room, Lorenz did something really wild: not very much. She opted to leave the extravagant dark paneled wall covering on the ceiling along with the oversize metallic pendants, which worked well with the new white walls, further perked up by Joe’s colorful skate decks on display.

Plus, this contrasting motif feels cohesive with the rest of the interiors. The black-and-white palette repeats in the foyer on a tiled floor stretching down the hallway, which was similarly stripped down to show off its original arches. Upstairs in the primary bedroom, the designer repeated her strategy, saving the square-style wall paneling for its elegant, contrasting texture. “One of my favorite things is keeping something and making it work to your benefit, so you can really see it in a new light,” Lorenz says.

And when things couldn’t be repurposed, she added a new glow of her own. Case in point: The overscale powder room, which needed some edginess to make it shine. “I wanted to do something that was risky for the average Minnesotan and put lights above the sink instead of a mirror,” Lorenz explains. To up the wow factor, she installed a curvaceous modern Australian sink then staggered disc-like lights by Hennepin Made above, keeping a standing mirror just to the right of this de facto art installation. It’s stunning, sculptural and the perfect amount of weird.

Not every home can fuse handblown glass and repurposed wall paneling with neon paintings and bright skateboards. But that was key for this family with very urban style in a very suburban setting. And fortunately, Henri Interiors pulled it off beautifully. “My artwork is funky and different,” Joe shares. “Amanda was able to integrate it and infuse our personality into the home. Not all designers would be able — or willing — to do so.”

For builder Curt Dubose, it’s thoughtfully incorporating technology into custom home design. All of these concepts — both big and small — that make our houses feel better truly help the environment breathe better, too. And a breath of fresh air is the original dose of wellness.

CARA WOODHOUSE

INTERIOR DESIGNER

Cara Woodhouse is in the mood to make your home feel good. The New York interior designer feels so strongly about it, she’s writing a book on the topic slated to debut next year. She is known for her work crafting evocative, curvaceous, colorful interiors along with her collaborations with the likes of ABC Stone and Rug Art. In a moment of reflection, she pauses to discuss everything from spirituality to accessibility — plus why pink has her feeling all the feels.

“Our homes are inherently healing spaces,” says Woodhouse, who travels internationally for both work and play. “How you feel, live and function within your home sets the tone for how you walk out the door into the world. And whenever I go away, my home is always calling me back. Everyone should feel that way.”

While part of this form-meets-function philosophy is purely practical, she also leans into a little “woo,” be it crystals, feng shui or simply a dedicated space for spirituality. As meditation is having a moment, she has found herself creating custom in-home studios. “A lot of my clients are taking time to rebalance, and knowing you have a sanctuary for that release feels so good,” she notes. These modern Zen rooms are cozy, light and filled with floor pillows, while often sporting a separate treatment area or even an infrared cedar sauna.

Another natural spot for designing that at-home sanctuary? The bathroom. This is where Woodhouse reveals her love of marble, accentuating surfaces with cool, luxe stone in eye candy shapes and hues. She recently used pink onyx, which reminds her of rose quartz, known to be all about self-love and, in this case, selfcare. “I’m known for pink, but I’m so not a girly girl,” she laughs. “There’s just something about it when done beautifully — not Pepto-Bismol pink, but a super elevated, sophisticated tone that is nurturing, calm and cool.”

As with color, light really sets a mood. In her own midcentury home in Roslyn Harbor, Woodhouse reconfigured a bathroom with skylights that stream natural light down toward the bathtub. “Windows are everything — they’re the original TV — and skylights are literally like art,” she notes. “When you’re taking a bath, all the elements are right above you, which is so calming.”

While a full remodel with skylights and stonework isn’t always in the budget, therapeutic design touches also come in easily accessible doses. It can be cleaning the chaos out of a closet or a nightstand drawer. It can be thoughtfully selecting your go-to glassware or that rug underfoot. These are just some of the high/lows that Woodhouse plans to pinpoint in her forthcoming book, with the hope that it helps everyone find contentment at home. As she explains, “One client in San Diego told me, ‘I’m going to die in this house; I want it to make me happy.’” And that is exactly Woodhouse’s goal.

In Desert Hot Springs, California, wellness and modernism have always run deep. Hollywood royalty escaped here to soak in the spas while renowned architects made their marks on area residences. Now, the oasis has another claim to fame: being the site of the world’s first 3D-printed, net zero-energy community. While it might look like a movie set, it’s a real neighborhood of 77 futuristic houses, complete with swimming pools, fire pits and mountain views. And Basil Starr, the mastermind behind the master-planned Palari Villas Scenic Crest development, believes these “homes of tomorrow” may just save the planet.

“I wanted to do something entirely different,” says the founder and CEO of Palari Group, where the mission is to build a better, more sustainable future. “Change starts with the individual home, but it extends to the homeowner.”

That immediate change can be seen in California, but Starr is thinking globally. Originally from Ukraine, he is in talks to help rebuild his homeland in his typical time-sensitive, eco-friendly manner, plus he employs refugees on his team. Palari is also leading the way toward a carbon-neutral future in support of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Near or far, his houses all have the same principles: beauty, affordability and sustainability.

For his Desert Hot Springs “sustainable sanctuaries,” Starr fine-tuned the process from start to finish. To begin, he enlisted Mighty Buildings to accelerate and revolutionize the construction phase. Typically, it takes 10 to 12 months to build a home, yet they did it in four thanks to a secret weapon: 3D printing. That means all those striking white patterned walls (which are made of mostly recycled glass and are tougher than concrete) are constructed offsite. Since everything gets shipped flat pack to the lot, installation is quick and inexpensive. The team assembles a watertight envelope — roof, walls, doors and modern Andersen windows — in a mere four days, cutting down on both waste and cost.

“Our beautiful building blocks make the process easy and extraordinarily fast,” says Mighty Buildings Chief Strategy Officer Chris Murphy, who sees their kits as an answer to the housing and climate crises in this economy. “Prefab unlocks the ability to build quickly and efficiently, especially in places that need it.” And this is exactly the course correction Starr is shooting for when it comes to creating sustainable sanctuaries for the greater good.

Although Starr’s “home future-proofing” begins with the walls, it extends inside. Tapping into the latest technology keeps every abode ultra smart and energy efficient, increasing value and lowering utility bills. To start, each residence runs wholly on gas-free energy and uses gray-water recycling, which reduces consumption by nearly half. Smart features also encompass thermostats, lighting and battery backup — music to Californians’ ears after recent blackouts. And if anything needs to be tweaked, fixed or micro-customized, an online portal is always at the ready.

If it sounds a bit like the Tesla of homebuilding, that’s because it is. Starr firmly believes his model could enhance global wellness by drastically decreasing energy consumption while increasing housing for the world. “Tesla revolutionized the auto industry,” he affirms. “We want to do the same for housing.”

KATHRYN KENNEDY

Beautiful homes became an obsession for Kathryn Kennedy as a young girl. Growing up in the Twin Cities, she would flip through her grandmother’s design magazines, igniting a lifelong love for houses. When that obsession became her business — and a successful one, as she’s been recognized by business publications as well as the Coldwell Banker President’s Club (the top 50 agents for volume company-wide) — she found real estate to stretch far beyond just finding beautiful abodes for clients, especially in recent years. It became about helping them create their own haven for well-being.

“Wellness is all about being happy in your space, especially your outdoor space,” says Kennedy, whose family of four has a built-in serenity spot thanks to their St. Paul backyard pool, a feature everyone now wants. Post-pandemic, she’s seeing a shift in what people are looking for both inside and out when it comes to the new era of “home sweet home.”

“My buyer clients bring up different points now,” she explains. “During the pandemic, they enjoyed spending more time with their family at home, so they want their house tailored around that.” These days, affluent buyers have wish-list asks ranging from gyms and golf simulators to tennis courts and spalike bathrooms. Bonus rooms are popular — whether it’s a dedicated office or a reading nook carved out by a stairway — as are decks and patios for entertaining.

Another top request? A waterfront property, especially in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. “Centering your life around a body of water promotes mental, emotional and physical wellness,” she notes. “If you live by a lake, you’re more apt to go for a walk.”

While some clients are looking for that lakefront retreat or a pastoral hobby farm, Kennedy says plenty of people are seeking out downtown condos. The biggest upside to urban living is walkability — an instant wellness perk for downtown dwellers who can stroll to a grocery store or coffee shop and have quick access to nearby parks and biking paths. Plus, having social company close by is always a good idea, as Kennedy explains: “Old-fashioned neighborhoods — where you actually see your neighbors — are back!”

Whatever the size or the locale, there’s one thing she declares absolutely invaluable when shopping for real estate, and it’s critical for the well-being of both the home and the homeowner. “Natural light tops the list,” she shares. “Vitamin D makes for a better mood and increases productivity, which is so important with so many people working from home now.”

That’s why her clients are inevitably drawn to residences with large windows and skylights. High-quality insulated windows also assist with soundproofing (especially in urban areas) and promote sustainability alongside energy-efficient elements like solar panels and clever landscaping to filter sun and create seasonal shade. But the greatest perk by far is the spirit-boosting serenity that sunlight pours into a space. “An abundance of natural light lifts us up; it truly helps us kick the winter blues and makes us feel cheerful,” Kennedy says in her trademark cheerful tone. And the exhale that comes from feeling happy at home is perhaps the most beautiful part of all.

CURT DUBOSE BUILDER

Ministry and mental health aren’t typical stepping stones into homebuilding, but for Curt Dubose, they certainly set the path. He was leading worship when his travels took him to Littleton, Colorado, days before the Columbine massacre, and he became struck by how unaddressed anxiety and depression issues were. Shortly afterward, his young son developed spinal meningitis, a diagnosis resulting in hearing loss (later to be corrected by a brain-implanted, hardwired technology). In an effort to stay closer to home, Dubose joined the family business, spearheading business development for residences with a very unique focus: healing.

“I had just been down a rabbit hole of darkness,” recalls the CEO of Texasbased PentaVia. “My curiosity about depression, anxiety and healing were at an all-time high.” To redirect these thoughts, he created the Five Roads of Design, which address the physical, social, intellectual, emotional and personal aspects within a residence. This acts as a road map for creating the ultimate custom abode — but it also strikes a chord for Dubose. He didn’t want just a smart home; he wanted a home strong enough to protect a family.

What does this mean exactly? To be sure, it goes far beyond security systems and safe rooms. By leveraging technology and design, the team provides the highest degree of personalization for their clients. For instance, they may devise an automated nursery where the room itself monitors an infant’s vitals and has real-time data ready to share with the pediatrician if needed. And when it comes to indoor air quality, the company was on it well before the pandemic, installing energy systems that sanitize and purify air.

“We are utilizing technology to create wellness,” Dubose explains. “It’s a unique opportunity to do something thoughtful, and we go down roads others typically don’t go down.”

In thinking about these roads of design, he aims to create abodes that are an extension of clients’ values. Sometimes that’s as simple as imagining the best spot for the Christmas tree, then shifting walls and stairways to fit exactly where the homeowners envision their best memories forming. Other times, it’s encouraging kids to spend fewer hours on screens by creating a performance stage with built-in microphones for nightly entertainment.

Creativity and wellness come into play by way of craft rooms, edible gardens and comfortable courtyards, too. The last of which is a PentaVia trademark to let in naturally healing light and fresh air through large-scale windows while maintaining a sense of privacy.

“Builders don’t typically talk about healing,” Dubose says, “but we have a responsibility to our clients to think about these types of things.” And he hopes the conversation will only grow from here.

AS FAMILIES EVOLVE, SO DO THEIR HOMES. THAT’S why Marcia Page was looking for a new living space to accommodate her grown children who had moved away. Something that felt less complicated, a place to create new memories with future grandchildren in mind. “Our three daughters are spread across the country, and we wanted a home that would delight their growing families when they visit,” says Page.

Just the kind of project interior designers Talla Skogmo and Jennifer Zirkelbach like to tackle. The mission was to reimagine a Twin Cities lakeside retreat originally built in 2019 by John Kraemer & Sons. The 6,100-square-foot residence had good bones and good light but needed to be tweaked to accommodate Page’s new lifestyle. “We were given a clean slate of beautiful materials that were part of the original home,” Skogmo recounts. “The house provided great spaces for artwork, and our palette quietly complements the simplicity of the home.”

You sense that simplicity in the sun-filled living room, where an entire wall of windows frames the peaceful lake right outside. Here, low-profile furniture keeps the sightlines open while blending in seamlessly with the natural world. “The seating works well for large groups as well as small intimate gatherings, business meetings and social engagements,” Skogmo notes. “The outdoor living space is an extension of the living room and contributes to great family fun.”

In fact, family fun was a big part of the design. In the summer, there are endless lawn and water activities to enjoy, while a cozy theater room hosts regular movie nights. But a particular passion for strategy-driven board games like Catan drove key decisions. “This is a family that plays games,” explains Skogmo. “The dining room table needed to accommodate not only dining but game playing. The finish of the Keith Fritz dining table was tested with dice rolling.”

It’s precisely this kind of thoughtful, highly personalized service that sets Talla Skogmo Interior Design apart. Founded in 2004, the award-winning firm delivers classic and timeless interiors to clients across the country. For Skogmo, it all comes down to the client’s specific needs and desires. Her team then tailors the design to each individual abode, whether a city loft or a log home.

Within this sizable residence, one of the most petite rooms turned out to be a favorite. The existing study felt a bit too masculine, so the team lightened it up with Benjamin Moore Cloud White paint, then added a modern wing chair upholstered in creamy white Pierre Frey bouclé. Glass doors afford privacy while allowing easy interaction with the rest of the house. “The desk is set up to benefit from the great views of the lake and the main level,” Page explains. “And it has a surprise feature: its own intimate fireplace at eye level. Some days it hardly feels like I’m working.”

You’ll find that attention to detail throughout the home, where Dinesen white oak floors lend a warmth. Color remains muted with a palette of light textured gray, dusty blue and warm yellow — a nod to the family’s Scandinavian heritage. Then to balance those soft hues, strong pops of black found in light fixtures and in the metal on the doors provide a striking contrast.

And yet, sometimes it’s what you don’t see that makes all the difference. “This house is great technologically,” says Page. “From lighting to music to shade control to opening the garage, we are literally connected to each feature via our phones. The surprise is that it’s actually very easy to manage, even for a couple of Baby Boomers.”

You feel that functionality in the kitchen, where it’s all about an ease of entertaining. A generously sized center island grounds the space and offers room for guests to gather and share a cocktail before dinner. Right above, the original basket lighting was replaced with spectacular glass globes that set off the entire room.

Upstairs, the sleeping quarters bring their own surprises. The primary suite is a supremely tranquil retreat with the best view of the lake. Simple white textiles soften the space, accenting the beautiful custom bed and walnut nightstands. Then right down the hall, a bunkroom is ready to host future grandchildren. IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD OF COASTAL COWGIRL, YOU’RE ABOUT TO.

Over the summer, the trending aesthetic garnered 300 million views on social media and counting. It is easily going to carry on beyond a TikTok craze and into fall fashion thanks to the wearability of Western classics, from fringe jackets and flowy skirts to cowboy hats and turquoise jewelry. But turquoise doesn’t need a viral trend for a return to the spotlight, since it never left the fashion stage.

Dating all the way back to 5500 BC, Egyptian royalty worshiped the gem, believing it had mystical powers. In fact, turquoise was one of the earliest gemstones ever excavated by man. This opaque bluish-green mineral has long been considered a symbol of the heavens, hence its nickname: the sky stone. Turquoise also played an important role in American history, and we have Indigenous cultures to thank for that. For centuries, Native American tribes like the Navajo, Hopi and Pueblo have used the stone in art, jewelry, sacred ceremonies and trade negotiations.

This gemstone is so rich in history, and its magical prowess lives on today. In our current sustainable fashion environment, what’s old is new again, so turquoise fits right in. In fact, an investment in this stone may have great return, as turquoise appreciates in value. Each beautiful bauble is truly unique, never to be recreated, making it practically priceless.

Truth be told, Indigenous style has always been foundational to American fashion. Think of Ralph Lauren, with his iconic denim, cowboy boots, prairie skirts, fringe and suede looks layered with turquoise jewelry that have graced his runway since the seventies. I fondly remember admiring these outfits dripping in turquoise during New York Fashion Week. Of course, anyone living the Southwest lifestyle will tell you turquoise is as ubiquitous as a pair of sneakers. Almost everyone has some and showcases the gem proudly.

Every summer, we see a sprinkle of sky stone jewelry pop up, but the look is timeless and seasonless. To carry the Coastal Cowgirl trend into fall, you need just two things: fringe and turquoise. Enthusiasts will show you how it’s done with no limit to their layering, wearing countless necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings. In short, more is more and less is a bore when it comes to this glorious gemstone. Have a beach vacation? Pack the turquoise with that white linen dress. Heading out west on a ski trip? Pack the turquoise with a shearling coat and a cozy sweater.

I have no doubt that turquoise’s colorful spirit and legacy will live on for years to come. After all, this special stone has been revered for millennia by ancient and Indigenous cultures, who recognized its special connection to nature. A gem that symbolizes the beauty of Mother Earth and the heavens above will surely bring out the beauty in each of us when we wear it. The sky is the limit for the sky stone.

HAVE YOU EVER ENTERED A HOTEL SUITE SO SWANKY THAT YOU DIDN’T WANT TO leave? Now imagine if that same suite carried you to dazzling destinations, without you ever having to step foot outside. Such is the appeal of luxury train tours. In lieu of on-foot excursions and crowded tourist traps, you’ll find yourself floating from point A to B on a river of steel, savoring the scenery outside your window as much as the fine wine flowing from the bar car.

The analog quality of this slower mode of transportation feels like a balm in an age of constant connectivity and fractured attention. Add to this the growing trend of upscale accommodations — some of which could qualify as works of art on wheels — and suddenly this regal take on rail travel has secured its position at the top of our adventure bucket list.

Because train travel is spent almost entirely within the confines of a few well-appointed cars, thoughtful design and high-end service become all the more important. Locally sourced furnishings and foods ensure you still feel connected to the places whizzing past your picture window. Collectively, these choices culminate in an exquisite experience that is as transportive as it is transporting. Stepping into a high-end railcar can feel like entering a world apart, one that seamlessly blends a reverence for the past with modern-day comforts.

Take leading luxury travel brand Belmond. The art deco glamour of the company’s Venice Simplon Orient Express — a nod to the 1930s novel Murder on the Orient Express, which first enshrined the route’s ritzy reputation — is the stuff of legends. As is the train’s midnight brunch, a post-party service of chichi fare like lobster rolls, truffled club sandwiches and Champagne. It isn’t the first high-end train service in modern times (that distinction belongs to South Africa’s Rovos Rail), but it remains the best known of Belmond’s high-end railway offerings around the world.

Farther north, the brand’s Royal Scotsman draws inspiration from the stately castles of the Scottish Highlands, with carriages clad in dark polished wood and tweed upholstery in the same varied greens that blanket the hypnotic hills rolling by outside. When not enjoying the sumptuous cabins, you’re treated to haute cuisine in luxe dining cars Raven and Swift, where head chef Mark Tamburrini prepares contemporary dishes like salmon, venison and other local delicacies — all washed down with the finest malt whiskies, of course.

And for its Andean Explorer in Peru — one of the highest train routes in the world — Belmond

endeavored to create carriages as magnificent as the surrounding vistas along the journey through Cusco, Puno and Arequipa. In order to connect the interiors with such stunning landscapes, designer Inge Moore of London-based Muza Lab opted for soft alpaca ivory and slate grays to echo the Andean cliffs, complemented by throw pillows featuring brightly colored Peruvian textiles. Days aboard the Explorer include indulging in Andean-inspired spa rituals, taking in fresh air and mountain panoramas on the observation deck, and enjoying pisco sour nightcaps in the piano lounge (a staple of all the toniest trains).

The aforementioned Rovos Rail, which currently operates six trains across Southern Africa ferrying passengers to destinations like Cape Town and Victoria Falls, gives back to the community by equipping local craftspeople with valuable carpentry skills to design its mahogany interiors. The pioneering brand was the first to outfit trains with posh amenities — think double beds and en-suite bathrooms with Victorian tubs — when it debuted more than 30 years ago. Today, it remains the most luxurious train in Africa and one of the top five in the world thanks to its opulent suites, deluxe dining programs and picturesque journeys.

In Japan, the artistry on display throughout the Seven Stars in Kyushu makes each room feel more like an interactive museum than railcar. The intricate woodworking along the walls and room partitions is custom made by the Kinoshita Wood Factory, beckoning you to feel the craftsmanship with your own hands. Actual works of art can be found in the en-suite bathrooms in the form of limited-edition Sakaida Kakiemon porcelain wash

basins. Between such exquisite attention to detail, scenic views of the South China Sea, and top-shelf tea and sushi service, it’s no wonder that passage aboard the Seven Stars will set you back $11,000.

As this travel trend continues to take off, operators are teaming up with top brands and creatives to turn the train industry’s emphasis on distinctive design into an opportunity for companies to market themselves via kitted-out carriages.

For instance, last year an inaugural Aman train journey began carting guests from Jakarta, Indonesia, to the luxury hospitality group’s Amanjiwo resort near Yogyakarta, a Javanese center of arts and culture. Interiors boast traditional batik tapestries and Javanese paintings, plus Amanjiwo resident anthropologist Patrick Vanhoebrouck hops aboard to offer insights into Javanese history, architecture, spirituality, artistic traditions and more during the seven-hour excursion.

In Vietnam, five-star hotel brand Anantara has attached its own stylish carriage to the end of an existing train traversing one of the country’s most popular routes. The Vietage car ferries globetrotters between Da Nang and Quy Nhon, connecting two of the hotelier’s glamorous properties. From the outside, the Vietage looks identical to the other cars. But inside, you’re immersed in a sleek, modern space clad in light wood and rattan. A swanky marble bar is a hot spot for socializing with other passengers — that is, when you’re not enjoying highlights like soothing shoulder massages and elegantly plated Vietnamese fare with a French twist.

This spring, the Royal Scotsman unveiled a firstof-its-kind Dior-branded spa car, an homage to the fashion designer’s love of Scotland. It features a menu of tailored treatments inspired by the Highlands, like the D-Elements massage that employs semi-precious hot stones and a body mist emulating the country’s famously cloudy climate.

Even Hollywood is getting in on the action. Belmond recently brought in famed American

filmmaker Wes Anderson to lend elements of his singular style to one of the carriages of its British Pullman train. He created a bespoke design for the Cygnus carriage that evokes the same colorful, timeless feeling of his movies.

Even with all the style and sophistication these trains provide indoors, you’re still likely to find yourself glued to the window throughout your excursion. Endless scenes of breathtaking landscapes replace the usual Instagram scrolls and Netflix binges. Something happens when you adjust to the pace of slower travel, a world where daily appointments are replaced with long, languid afternoons spent amid enchanting scenery and fashionable company. You’ll feel transported back in time and begin to tune into all the beautiful nuances of the day. You may have to leave those details behind when your train tour comes to an end, but you’ll carry with you a newfound appreciation for slowing down and remaining fully present. After all, it’s the journey, not the destination.

HAD NO IDEA WHAT THE DRAKE PASSAGE

involved because I’m not on TikTok. After mentioning to my Gen Z hairdresser that I was about to embark on a trip to Antarctica, he promptly whipped out his iPhone to show me stomach-churning viral videos of what’s known as the Drake Shake. Connecting three oceans between South America and Antarctica, this thoroughfare is notorious for its convergence of currents, waves and wind — dubbed the Drake Shake when rough and the Drake Lake when calm. You never know which one you’ll get, but you must pass through in order to visit the White Continent. There was no turning back now; I was about to check off this ultimate bucket-list trip.

In preparation, I spent a week scouring the Internet for a wardrobe of sporty items that I would surely never wear again. I bought my first (and last) puffer vest. Something called base layers. And so much fleece. All of this to set sail aboard the Viking Polaris, the renowned cruise line’s expedition ship designed to explore the planet’s most remote destinations.

This two-week journey begins on a chartered flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, Argentina, descending to the bottom of the world with an aircraft full of sportswear-clad adventure seekers. It’s not until you step on the 378-passenger ship that you meet your fellow globetrotters, a group of mostly affluent, welltraveled seniors (AKA retirement goals).

Like the passengers aboard the Polaris, travel writers love to talk (perhaps even brag) about the places they’ve been. I didn’t get my first passport until I was 25, so I’ve spent the ensuing years making up for lost time. Current count: 54 countries and six continents. Despite my travels, I’ve never considered myself a cruiser but more of a rugged sailing type who would rather spend a week barefoot on a boat. This sentiment changed in short order upon experiencing the Polaris, which feels like a luxury boutique hotel on water. The decor gives off Scandinavian chic vibes, the food rivals a Michelin-starred restaurant and the service is absolutely extraordinary.

I spent the two-day journey through the Drake Lake (phew) mostly spa-ing, reading and sipping wine in the Living Room with new friends as we anxiously awaited reaching the Last Continent. Come turndown, we received an official certificate recognizing our successfully crossing of the passage,

and once we had made it through, the first sight of the Antarctic Peninsula is one I’ll never forget.

Despite a recent influx of tourism, the Ice remains one of the coldest, driest, darkest and most hostile environments in the world. In short, this is the ultimate dare for an adventure enthusiast. Just seeing this land — one that so few people have witnessed — feels special. And with that privilege comes responsibility. Scientists are available for onboard conversation and questions, and passengers can participate in fieldwork, adhering to strict protocols designed to protect the delicate environment.

Most excursions involved zippy little Zodiac boats and were centered around wildlife viewing. To which I can confidently say: There’s nothing cuter than a penguin — except a baby penguin. But on the Polaris, the spotting of any creature is celebrated. One of my favorite excursions was kayaking, and I was fortunate enough to experience this on a sunny (albeit cold) day, calmly gliding amid bright blue icebergs that resembled art sculptures. Here, I spotted graceful whales, showoff penguins and lackadaisical seals lounging about on the ice.

Given the volatile environs, weather is constantly monitored aboard the Polaris. As our journey was coming to a close, it appeared a potentially dangerous storm would be in our path as we crossed back over the Drake Passage, inevitably resulting in a Drake Shake dramatic enough to land a viral video (no thanks). Instead, our intrepid captain opted to head back a day early. Sure, it was disappointing to lose time on the White Continent, but it was also a reminder that the greatest adventures in life are the most unpredictable — just like Antarctica itself.

It’s been two months since my return from this trip. I received a postcard in the mail today that I had sent during an excursion to Port Lockroy, the southernmost post office on the planet. This is surely the truest definition of snail mail. In a time when we can zip across the country in an afternoon and communicate with people around the world with a touch of our phone, it feels exciting to know that some things still take time: a two-day sail through the Drake Passage, a two-week excursion to see the Antarctic Peninsula (just a tiny piece of the landmass), and a two-month journey for a postcard to arrive back in the States. I’m dubbing it “snail travel,” a phenomenon where the best trips are worth the time spent — and the wait for that coveted checkmark.

OVER THE PAST SEVEN YEARS, I’VE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH AS an artist to spend my days doing what I love. I have made a name for myself in the art world, having painted the iconic W at the W Minneapolis hotel, sold a line of limited-edition prints for Sundance Film Festival and more. Today, I’m honored to have my work globally represented through the Singulart digital platform.

Recently, I completed my third restaurant project with renowned chef David Fhima, crafting the artwork for the stunning interior of hot spot Maison Margaux in the North Loop. Our collaboration began five years ago, when he opened his freshly renovated eatery Fhima’s in downtown Minneapolis. From the very beginning, we combined pop culture themes and bold expressionism to engage customers in a multi-sensory dialogue of food, community, family and joy.

Restaurateurs have long been known to put significant thought and effort into the ambiance of their establishments. From the lighting and music to the furniture and table settings, every element is carefully curated to create a memorable meal. But in recent years, a growing number of restaurateurs have taken this concept to the next level by incorporating works of art into their decor, turning their walls into mini galleries and creating an immersive experience that tantalizes all the senses.

Such is the case with chef David Fhima and his son/collaborator, Eli, who together are enriching the Twin Cities dining scene by bringing their walls to life. Their latest venture, Maison Margaux, has helped put Minneapolis on the map alongside other innovative foodie cities like New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. David is a well-known culinary figure who has worked in renowned restaurants across the country. Locally, his establishments have long been considered some of the city’s top dining destinations. My partnership with David began in 2017, soon after I started painting and after an unexpected breast cancer diagnosis. We were introduced to each other while he was preparing to open Fhima’s since he was looking for some art. What began with a simple inquiry has turned into an enduring friendship and inspiring collaboration that has resulted in my artwork adorning the walls in not only all of his restaurants but also in the home he shares with his wife, Lori.

For Maison Margaux, the creative process began by walking through the space with David, hearing firsthand the memories that inspired him, and understanding the vision and emotional environment he wanted to create. The art was to be a spice for the space that would

that is seamlessly integrated into the space. From large-scale sculptures to smaller drawings and paintings, these works add color, texture and visual interest to the eatery’s already impressive design. And because the art is constantly rotated and updated, guests are treated to a fresh and exciting experience every time they visit.

But it’s not just high-end restaurants that are embracing this trend. In cities across the country, restaurateurs are partnering with local talents to create unique and engaging spaces that showcase both the food and the art. In San Francisco’s Mission District, Foreign Cinema has turned its outdoor dining area into a makeshift gallery displaying a rotating selection of contemporary art that keeps diners coming back for more. Galleries and museums with in-house eateries, like the Whitney in New York City and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, are also getting on board.

What all of these examples have in common — and what David and Eli Fhima have brought to Minneapolis — is a commitment to creativity and a deep appreciation for the intersection of food and art. With each restaurant they open, they continue to affirm their support of the local artist community while staying ahead of the curve to keep the Minneapolis dining scene relevant and interesting.

As diners enter Maison Margaux, they are enveloped in an environment brimming with creativity that stimulates their senses, making for a fully immersive destination experience. Chef David Fhima remains dedicated to constantly improving his craft and creating unforgettable culinary memories for his guests. And now, by turning his walls into galleries, he is proving that good food and good art are the perfect pairing to be savored together.

OF THE MEANINGLESS SLOGANS THAT DEFINE OUR 21st century world, “living your best life” is among the tritest. Sufficiently vague as to be meaningless, it echoes the hollow tone of a dime-store self-help manual, while cheapening and coarsening the pursuit of happiness — ultimately reducing it to a simple hashtag.

To really understand what living your best life means, it is necessary to consult the oeuvre of Slim Aarons. In a world before social media, his photographs celebrated the life well lived. Mediated by his seemingly omnipresent camera lens, life became a visual roman-fleuve of the gilded elite as they migrated from resort to resort, seemingly forever living not just their best lives, but the very best lives imaginable at that point in history.

It helped that his subjects were almost uniformly beautiful, rich, elegant, well-dressed and carefree, but the Aarons eye was transformational. The way Slim composed his photographs, enjoying a cigarette, sipping a drink or just sitting in the sun became elevated to an aspirational, almost sacerdotal act — fleeting instants of joy and beauty captured and forever preserved in the amber of his photography.

The world recorded by Slim Aarons is, as we know, a never-never land of Cockaigne and lotus-eating forever out of reach, over the rainbow and in the past. Yet thanks to his instantly recognizable body of work, it has come down to us in all its sybaritic splendor, shorn of the miseries that infect even the best-lived lives. Slim’s images do not document the unhappy marriages, private griefs, domestic disappointments, cruelties, infidelities, fears; they do not even show the sunburn and mosquito bites. Instead, they present the world of the perennial perfect moment.

Slim said it best himself in the introduction to his 2003 book, Once Upon a Time: “I believe in fairy tales. For six decades, I have concentrated on photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.” There is something of Fitzgerald about these words, slightly elegiac and knowing, yet colluding in the seductive fantasy.

But more than visual Prozac to be devoured by the optic nerve, Slim’s photographs are valuable social documents, capturing a discrete moment in the development of modern leisure culture. Slim did not make a conscious decision to turn his back on reality, only on the less agreeable aspects of reality. In the wake of World War II, he spoke for many when he said, “I decided I had had my fill of suffering and despair.” Instead, he made a conscious decision to — yes — live his best life. –Nicholas

So good that he made plans to incorporate another 4,500 square feet up on the rooftop as the business continues to flourish. It also acts as a gathering space for architects, builders, interior designers, clients and the public to collaborate, experience the offerings, and interact with the knowledgeable staff.

When clients choose DWELL 44, he says, they’re getting outstanding service and individualized attention in a space that is “adapting to the crazy world we live in and are going to be living in.” A world where design professionals are increasingly moving out of offices and need a space to work together. It’s about creating a community of collaborators.

“We offer the full experience,” Coty adds. “There’s simply nothing else like it.” When architects meet with clients, for instance, they have access to the client’s preferred snacks and drinks or a special bottle of wine from the shop’s wine fridge to celebrate a dream home brought to life. Plus they get the chance to test drive the wide variety of chic, comfortable furniture on offer in the show room during their brainstorming sessions. The proof that it’s a winning combination? Coty says nearly every customer becomes a lifelong friend.

Brock Berglund and Anna Wilson

IDA GRAVES

How do you distill the purest spirit? Husband-and-wife team Brock Berglund and Anna Wilson aim to find out from their 77-acre property in Alexandria, where they make vodka, gin, aquavit and amaro. An attorney and a marketing professional respectively, they launched Ida Graves after his home-brewing hobby led him to ask: Are all these booze brands actually craft-focused and sustainably sourced? “I wanted to start a business where I could have a hand in making the product and ensuring it lined up with our values,” he says.

“The distilling felt like a passion and a really unique opportunity to bring in flavor in a way we weren’t experiencing in other products on the market,” Wilson adds. A business plan, the pandemic, the addition of some kids and a relocation to Alexandria to remodel the pole barn — which now houses the distillery and a tasting room — quickly followed.

The land provides both inspiration and ingredients. For instance, honey collected from the 45 onsite hives, combined with more of the sweet stuff from a local beekeeper, provides the base for Ida Graves vodka. Berglund says the flavor profiles change with the weather and the plants that the bees pollinate. The duo also forages for ingredients. “I really enjoy working with the seasons — what’s blooming and what’s coming up,” he notes. “It changes every year with different rainfalls and if winter comes early or late. It’s fun to work with those constraints and get creative.”

To date, Berglund has crafted an impressive 10,000+ bottles with his own hand. Looking ahead to 2024, the pair plans to add a cocktail room. But, they emphasize, simplicity and sustainability will remain top priorities as they grow. “The flavor profile and ingredients honor the Minnesota landscape,” Wilson shares. “Every step of this process is done with an incredible amount of attention and intention.”

“I never understood the juxtaposition that if you make a living with your art, then you’re giving up creative liberty,” Bobby Rogers shares. “It’s very possible to create beautiful work that speaks to the desires of our world and to sustain yourself while doing so.”

The prolific artist, photographer and founder/ creative director of multidisciplinary creative studio the Bureau is just 31 years old. But the drive to create as a means to overcome hardship — which propelled him through South High School, where he’d sell drawings for a few bucks a pop, and into the Minneapolis College of Art and Design — has established him as a multi-hyphenate powerhouse who continues to fortify a growing reputation.

After MCAD, where he studied illustration and graphic design, he hopscotched between work as a design manager for architect Charles Stinson and a design supervisor at North Minneapolis’s Juxtaposition Arts, a youth-oriented nonprofit visual arts center. “This was a really particular moment for me, seeing the extremes,” he notes. Photography soon followed as he taught himself the craft by capturing protest movements with his camera. The ability to relate history in motion through the eyes of those most affected hooked him. Now, that work has evolved at the Bureau, which often stages art-directed, researched-backed works that get captured for posterity.

“The evolution is the fun part,” explains Rogers. “A lot of artists might be hesitant to make shifts, but for me, that’s the creative chess game. At the Bureau, building multidisciplinary worlds and a new creative aesthetic has always been the goal for us. I had to create this world that didn’t yet exist, merging my artistic intrigue with social-political interests while building a platform for both myself and my community.”

MID-SEPTEMBER WHEN THE SUMMER LIGHT BEGINS TO FADE, I feel a distinct urge to refresh my closet and embrace the inevitable season shift.
