Moontower Phoenix, 2023
The Francis A. Countway Library at Harvard University was designed by Hugh Stubbins, a prominent Cambridge architect, and completed in 1965. Shepley Bulfinch renovated the Brutalist library to create a more proper entrance for Harvard Medical School. A new plaza on Huntington Avenue better connects the library with the Longwood medical community. The first floor was reimagined as a “hub of activity” with a new cafe, bookstore, events room, and makerspace. The building now
In case you hadn’t noticed, downtown Phoenix is booming. Shepley Bulfinch contributed to the city’s burgeoning skyline with the residential tower Moontower Phoenix. Moontower Phoenix rises 24 stories and has 326 residential units, complemented by a variety of amenities. (Its interiors were handled by Michael Hsu Office of Architecture.) An infill project built on vacant land, the tower also provides a publicly accessible local cafe as well as an artist-in-residence program. Moontower Phoenix was designed

Intermittent interventions to the building designed by Shepley Bulfinch were added over the course of several years. Phase one of the restoration, which entailed exterior work and improvements to the first and second floors, was completed in 2021. Phase two was finished in 2023, bringing upgrades to the lower-level classrooms. The renovation project was an AN Best of Design Editor’s Pick in 2025.

All of these features add up to make Moontower Phoenix a catalyst for transforming the city’s downtown. The development is within walking distance of Ray Phoenix, a new residential tower by Johnston Marklee with Lamar Johnson Collaborative.

In 1943, Shepley Bulfinch (then Coolidge Shepley Bulfinch and Abbott) completed the Simpson Infirmary in Wellesley, Massachusetts. That building was later torn down. In its place at Wellesley College, Shepley Bulfinch, with Mikyoung Kim Design, designed the Vivian A. Kao ’04 Health and Counseling Center. Part of the goal was to create a building that helps remove the stigma around seeking treatment for mental health. “We used the footprint of the
