It’s the start of a brand new year and what a start it’s been! Despite a slow first week back, which was to be somewhat expected given the long festive break, it seems like it’s been nonstop since – well that’s what I’m experiencing. I may be wrong, but it seems the slow December experienced by many was due to a lot of people just waiting and wanting to get Christmas out of the way – or maybe Santa actually delivered this year! Whatever the reason, long may it continue!
Throughout this issue, we take a closer look at various key subjects that span a number of sectors across the industry. For example, we showcase the latest new models and brands available in the hot tub sector, plus we examine various options available for the effective sanitisation of pool water, options which use a variety of ingenious technologies to achieve quality results and a safe environment for users. UV is just one of them and once again, that gets its own stand-alone feature inside.
We also take a closer look at some of the products that are keeping the water flowing in pools and spas. By this, I am of course talking about pumps and we look at what’s currently available from numerous leading brands. We also highlight a number of the latest pool cleaners, most of which are robotic, that will take the effort out of cleaning swimming pools throughout the season.
At this point I think it’s worth me highlighting that many of the products mentioned in our features will be present at SPATEX, but you can also bet that many more didn’t make our feature deadlines too. In fact, I know many didn’t!

And I say start, of course, we will be rolling into the second month of the year soon, so depending on how you consume SPN (digital edition online or traditional paper magazine received through the post) we may already be into February, and that means that the annual SPATEX exhibition is almost upon us!
For the UK wet leisure industry, the three-day SPATEX show is the first major industry event of any year and it returns to the Coventry Building Society Arena from 4 to 6 February. For anyone who has a need for new products, services, or perhaps some knowledge or inspiration, SPATEX is without doubt the place to be. This year it’ll again feature over 100 high quality exhibitors, many of which are regulars, which just goes to show the importance of the event. For those unfamiliar with SPATEX, the event helps to keep the trade up to speed with the latest trends and technologies – and that’s even more essential than ever given the uncertainty that the industry and wider economy has experienced over recent months. In this latest issue, we feature a full preview of the annual trade show and take a closer look at what visitors can expect to find when they arrive at this year’s Midlandsbased event.

OK, back on track… elsewhere, Golden Coast’s Adam Clark provides some thoughts on the subject of health, wellness and fitness, while the STA’s Robbie Philips looks at the design of commercial spas, quite literally from a very unique perspective! Somewhat linking to this subject, we’ve also a piece on water treatment specialists AquaFinesse, plus a piece on Recotherm too, as both of these companies celebrate anniversaries this year. There’s also our regular and useful updates from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA, including a look at the many organisations these three associations collaborate with, plus a piece on the benefits membership offers to businesses. Finally, we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, people, product and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield. So, with this first issue of the year broken down, all that leaves me to say is I hope you enjoy reading it, I hope to see you at SPATEX and of course, I hope you all have a fantastic 2025!
PS – If you are involved within the industry and have some relevant news that you would like to appear within SPN, please do get in touch.

Broxtowe Borough Council have launched their exciting plans to replace its ageing leisure centre in Bramcote, backed by Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington who visited the site at the end of last year.
Broxtowe Councillors, leisure employees and consultants toured the current facilities and discussed future proposals. The plans will now need both planning approval and to secure adequate funding to give the project the green light.
Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Milan Radulovic said: “We were delighted to welcome Rebecca Adlington to the Borough to discuss our plans to create a new and improved leisure centre at Bramcote. We know that the
centre needs to be improved along with our swimming provision which we know many residents make good use of.”
Deputy Leader Councillor Greg Marshall said: “We’re really excited to be on the verge
of putting our plans into action and begin working on what is going to be a fantastic new addition for the Borough. It was great to meet with Rebecca Adlington, listen to her stories of how she remembered competing at Bramcote and look to the future for a brand new facility that all our residents can enjoy.”
Adrian Turner, Managing Director of ReCreation, the Development Consultant for the new facility said: “Our guarantee is to provide a leisure facility that the people of Broxtowe will love. Ageing pools like Bramcote’s represent the majority of swimming facilities in the country –and so many are not being replaced. Broxtowe Council on the other hand are doing the right thing for their community and we cannot wait to start building in 2025.”
Operator Abbeycroft has reported positive results after installing cutting-edge assisted lifeguard technology at its Mildenhall Hub to enhance lifeguard operations. The technology provides an extra layer of protection for swimmers at the popular site while improving operational efficiencies.
Demonstrating its commitment to a safety-first culture, the not-for-profit social enterprise worked with the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) throughout the process to ensure a smooth transition to the new technology and that lifeguards and facility staff are confident and fully trained in using the advanced safety features.
RLSS UK is collaborating with Lynxight in the UK and Ireland to support pool operators in adopting affordable technology that complements existing lifeguard provisions without adding significant costs.
Going live at Mildenhall Hub’s main sixlane, 25m pool last September, the system’s
benefits are already being felt, according to Julie Hughes, who oversaw the installation as Abbeycroft’s Lynxight champion. “It gives an additional layer of safety for our swimmers. It’s like having a secondary lifeguard on hand. Our lifeguards are our primary response team, but this system backs them up.”
“It’s an amazing system. It has made us safer, brought a new level of engagement to our lifeguards and demonstrated our commitment to public safety,” said Tracey Loynds, Operations Director for Abbeycroft. “We are proud to be one of the first small trusts in the UK to install this technology. Working with RLSS UK has ensured that we have considered safety first, and we felt that a blended approach would support the wellbeing of our lifeguards while enhancing the safety of our swimmers.”
Abbeycroft manages and operates 12 facilities on behalf of West Suffolk Council and Babergh District Council.

HTH, a leader in the pool and spa products industry, is proud to announce the relaunch of its brand design. This change has been a major project and marks an important step in the company’s evolution to offer an enhanced and modern experience to its customers and consumers.
First, in order to gain a better understanding of the market, the company carried out an extensive survey of 1,600 consumers. This study identified HTH consumer profiles and improved the company’s understanding of their demands and requirements. three key points emerged from this study:
• The requirement of quality: Consumers are looking for easy-to-use, high-performance products with guaranteed visible results for
healthy, sparkling water.
• Serenity first: For them, swimming pools should remain a pleasure, not a burden. They want it to be easy to maintain, without adding to their already busy dayto-day lives.
• Trust and proximity: When they choose a product, they want to be accompanied by competent professionals who can answer their questions and reassure them.
The new logo features a lifebuoy and a slogan. ‘Together’ maintains an emotional bond and brings empathy to the brand whilst ‘for crystal clear water’ appeals to the rational side of demanding end-users by focusing on the expected result.
This design has been widely approved by consumers, who find it differentiating compared to other players in the market and compared to the previous design. These results were observed during the packaging test carried out in 2023 with a panel of 300 pool owners. The new design performed better than its competitors in terms of preference, intention to buy and overall appreciation.
From 2025, all products in the HTH and HTH Spa ranges bearing the old logo will gradually be replaced by products with the new HTH visual identity.

Diss Swim Centre was officially re-opened on 13 January following an investment by South Norfolk Council of nearly £4m.
The centre was reopened by gold medal winning, British Paralympic swimmer JessicaJane Applegate and the Council’s Chair Sharon Blundell.
Staff are now welcoming members back to the centre showcasing the improvements that have been made, futureproofing the facility for many generations to come.
The improvement and refurbishment work included: Re-shaping and re-tiling the swimming pool area, expanding and improving changing rooms, creating a new pool viewing area and improving the entrance lobby and reception.
The £4m investment was helped by securing £1.2m of Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme funding from central government to reduce the carbon footprint of the Swim Centre. This included installing air source heat pumps, new building cladding and insulation and solar panels on the roof.
Plans have been approved to restore Ipswich’s Broomhill Lido and bring the historic pool back to public use.
In December, Fusion Lifestyle received approval for the plans it submitted to Ipswich Borough Council in February for the site in Sherrington Road.
The planning officer has set some conditions for the development – including work on protected tree orders, and ensuring that everything is done in accordance with the local planning authority.
The pool will keep its iconic 1930s look. It will be designed in a similar style to the 1930s original building, but will “remain identifiable as a new element”, according to planning documents.
State-of-the-art amenities including a stunning swimming pool and spa are now available to residents of ‘Viadux’, Manchester’s new £300m residential tower.
The Viadux site has a rich history, including being home to the Manchester Central railway station until its closure in 1969. As part of a huge engineering project, the former station’s Victorian railway arches are now home to a breath-taking and unique leisure area featuring a 20x6m swimming pool and adjoining 4x3m spa.
The pool installation was carried out by Cheshirebased Portrait Pools. As one of the UK’s top luxury pool and spa builders, the Portrait Pools team offer a wealth of specialist knowledge and a professional approach to project design and specification.
The Portrait team design and install pools and spas as turnkey projects from the initial concrete base, through environmental control, to the most intricate features such as moving floors and state-of-the-art filtration.
They have worked with Heatstar for around 30 years and consider them their preferred supplier for swimming pool environmental control. The unit chosen for the Viadux project was the Heatstar XF EC 8000 Super+, a high efficiency heat recovery ventilation system. Centred upon a high efficiency ‘Cross Flow’ plate and with air-to-air heat recuperator, the XF EC utilises fresh air introduction to provide natural dehumidification and utilises the recuperator to maximise heat extraction from the expelled room air. The XF EC also utilises ‘Blue-EC’ ultra-efficient, intelligent digital inverter fan technology and is fully compliant with all the latest building control regulations.
Portrait’s James Blomeley said: “Heatstar and Portrait Pools share the same values of quality and excellence and have worked together for many years now, with Heatstar always being our ‘go to’ company for all our air handling needs. This is a decision based on an excellent working relationship linked with consistently reliable, well-engineered products, with an aftersales service that we know our customers can rely on.”

Splash pads have been linked to more than 10,000 cases of preventable waterborne illness caused by bacteria or viruses over a 26-year period, according to a CDC study which is relevant to operators around the globe.
Also called water playgrounds, splash pads are designed to prevent water collection and minimise drowning risks among children aged five years or younger.
Although splash pads around the world offer a safer option for small children to play at water parks, experts have noted that poor toileting/ hygiene skills combined with recycled and recirculated water is a recipe for illness.
Data was analysed on 60 waterborne disease outbreaks associated with splash pads collected between 1997 and 2022. The outbreaks caused more than 10,000 illnesses, 152 hospitalisations,
99 Casualty Department visits, but no deaths. Among the 60 outbreaks, 21 were at splash pads with other water venues such as pools or hot tubs and 39 were in settings with only splash pads. Ninety five per cent of the outbreaks were reported between May and August.
Of 52 outbreaks for which the cause was confirmed by laboratory testing, 40 were caused by Cryptosporidium, five by Shigella, three by Escherichia coli O157:H7 and one each by Campylobacter jejuni, Giardia duodenalis, norovirus and Salmonella serotype Newport.
The report highlighted that because chlorination is the primary method for disinfecting splash pad water, and Cryptosporidium in particular is tolerant to it, operators and public health officials should promote safe use behaviours to help prevent outbreaks.
Swimming Pool News was sad to learn of the passing of Selwyn Mindel in the run up to Christmas.
More recently known as the man behind North West London firm Unipools, which was established back in 1976, Selwyn worked alongside his brother Norman (who sadly passed in 2018) for many years both at Unipools and Compass Pools, and he was a figure known by numerous colleagues across the industry having been involved in the sector for multiple decades.
One of life’s real characters, he truly left a legacy as he was instrumental in a number of initiatives that will have benefitted many working within the wet leisure industry over many years.
Selwyn was a Founder of ISPE (The Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers) and held a directorship for more than two decades with the organisation. So vital was his input that the Institute have a ‘Selwyn Mindel Award for Performance and Achievement’, a tribute that is only presented from time to time to individuals for outstanding service to the Institute and to those who have gone that extra mile.
He was also one of the three founding Directors of SPATEX Ltd which puts on the annual trade exhibition. He held this position for the best part of 20 years, providing valuable input into the show’s running and speaking in the seminar arenas.
Given the above, somewhat unsurprisingly during his illustrious career within the industry, he also served as a Director at the BSPF (British Swimming Pool Federation) for a number of years plus he also managed to be President of SPATA (The Swimming Pool And Allied Trades Association) from 2000 to 2001!
A stalwart of the industry, he will be sadly missed and we wish his family all the best.
Swim England’s new Director of Community Participation and Health, Helen Marney, stated she is ‘thoroughly looking forward’ to ‘a new and bigger adventure in a sport that has the power to transform lives’.
Helen has more than 20 years of wide-ranging experience within the sport sector.
She will join Swim England in March from British Triathlon, where she has been Director of Development since 2019 –responsible for the development and growth of the sport as well as driving the organisation forward as part of the executive team.
Helen will be responsible for the strategic direction and leadership of several key aspects of Swim England’s work, including learning to swim, stronger clubs, aquatics for health, lifelong participation and outdoor swimming.
She will also oversee qualifications and workforce, volunteering, place-based growth, local delivery in partnership with counties and regions plus equality, diversity and inclusion.
“I was looking for a new and bigger adventure in a sport that has the power to transform lives, communities and
ecosystems,” said Helen. “One that could lead the way for the wider sport and physical activity sector in its collective mission to tackle inequalities, improve health, grow participation and engagement and develop skills and capabilities that last a lifetime.
“There aren’t many sports that could do that across our landscape –swimming and aquatics can. I want to be part of that!”
Helen is the first of four new directors who will be joining Swim England’s senior leadership team.
Over the coming months, a Finance Director, People Director and Director of Safe Aquatics and Welfare will also be appointed.
The SPN team were saddened to learn of the passing of Golden Coast Founder David Adams at the start of the year at the age of 87.
David founded Golden Coast during the sweltering summer of 1977, when he decided to build his family a pool in their back garden. Initially, it was just a way to keep his kids from overheating as the temperatures soared – but it soon became so much more as he identified a gap in the market for a specialist in the emerging wet leisure market.
A pioneer in every sense of the word, throughout the early 1980s, David oversaw the growth of Golden Coast and having become a member of SPATA, became the South West Regional Chairman of the Association. Working closely with industry organisations across a number of years, David also served as
SPATA President and he was awarded a Fellowship of the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers in the same year as his son Jamie served as South West Chairman of SPATA.
With Golden Coast having gone from strength-tostrength over the years and with his three sons all working for the Barnstaple-based distributor, David retired as Managing Director of business in 2006, and took on the role of Chairman whilst handing over the dayto-day running to his sons Jamie, Shaun and Dominic.
It was Jamie that shared the news of his father’s passing via LinkedIn with the simple message ‘A life well lived – RIP David Adams’.
Our condolences go to Jamie and all the members of the wider Adams family.
Kent-based Aqua Technics Pools UK are excited to announce the launch of their new Infinity 3m diameter round pool to the UK market.
Dorian Davies, Aqua Technics’ Dealer Network Manager for the UK and Europe said of this announcement: “We are absolutely delighted to introduce the 3m Infinity round pool to the UK and European wet leisure trade. It fills a need in our range for discerning prospective pool owners who still want to enjoy a home aquatic retreat in locations such as small gardens, roof terraces or courtyards, where they perhaps don’t have the space or the desire for one of our larger rectangular pools.”
The 3m round Infinity pool features non-slip entry steps, a bench seat which runs round the entire circumference, where bathers can relax and chat, plus a central area 1.45m in depth for deeper immersion. The pools can be specified either as plunge pools with a circulation, filtration and treatment package to keep the water clear and sparkling or there are various options of additional therapy jets and
blown air injection jets, to give a complete home hydrotherapy massage spa.
The 3m Infinity can be further customised to the homeowner’s needs and desires through the addition of various options such as LED lighting, next-generation air source heat pump systems and stainless steel water features. The pools can be installed completely in-ground, semi-sunk or aboveground.
Manufactured in Perth, Western Australia, Aqua Technics’ multi-award-winning pools are exported all over the globe. The most popular models in the most popular colours are held in stock at their Ashford distribution centre, meaning very rapid delivery and installation times for UK and European consumers, and the 3m Infinity round pool has been added to its expanding range of UK inventory models, with models in Twilight, Platinum and Horizon available on the ground for immediate delivery.

Oase has over 50 years’ experience in the swimming pool sector, and continue to be committed to innovation. This commitment has lead to the introduction of Oase Sportive.
Oase Sportive focuses on ways to stay fit and healthy, using the swimming pool as a training partner. With SwimSwimmer, the brand offers a counter-current unit for swimmers, while Swimrunner, as its name suggests, appeals more to walkers and runners. Exercising in water with either of these solutions puts less strain on muscles which reduces complaints.
SwimSwimmer provides a natural swimming experience and mimics a river current, generating either a strong or gentle current and provides great benefits for both competitive and leisure swimmers. Water is
drawn and pushed towards the swimmer by the turbine.
Suitable for both new and existing swimming pools, the space-saving SwimSwimmer can be recessed or surfacemounted.
For anyone who wants to keep training even though they are injured or in chronic pain, Swimrunner is a dream solution!
This underwater treadmill fits in home swimming pools and enables users to exercise at their own pace. Swimrunner comes with a waterproof smartwatch for personalising training sessions. Users can set the speed of the treadmill between 0.5 and 6km p/h and monitor their heart rate as they exercise.
Last but by no means least, for cycling enthusiasts, Oase Sportive also offer an option called Swimbiker, and importantly, a below and above-ground small Swim-Fitness Pool option to facilitate each of these in-pool training methods.

For the 2025 season, SCP UK have a number of exclusive Fairland AquaX inverter heat pump models on offer – three of which are the AquaX 20, AquaX Vertical and the AquaX Essential. All are available in a number of sizes and between these three options, 7.5kW to 34.5kW is catered for.
The AquaX 20 and AquaX Essential both incorporate a ‘Cool & Heat’ function and there’s a separate model for clients wanting this function in the Vertical format. All offer fourseason functionality (request sizing for all year use), with the AquaX 20 model operating from temperatures as low as -20°C. This model also achieves COP 20 – a new industry standard for energy efficiency – with 1 kW consumed becoming up to 20 kW maximum in the pool.
AquaX 20 and Vertical models also feature a turbo function too, meaning an extra 20% capacity for quicker heat up.
All models are extremely quiet in their operation, with the AquaX 20 and AquaX Vertical models featuring TurboSilence inverter technology which is an optimised version of Fairland’s
original Full-inverter technology.
This perfectly balances the inverter / compressor / control and heat exchanging technology, which creates the turbo performance and silent operation at the same time.
For ease of operation, each model includes a digital control panel plus there’s built in Wi-Fi which ensures simple remote control via an app.
For peace of mind, warranties are long too with the Vertical model offering 12 years on both the heat exchanger and compressor, plus three years on parts. The Aqua X 20 model extends this with 15 years and seven years respectively and the Essential model offers an impressive five years across the board!

Available as an optional upgrade on a number of models, Sundance Spas’ new Spa Sense™ option works to measure a spa’s chlorine, pH and alkalinity multiple times a day, reporting directly through the Sundance’s SmartTub® system. By specifying it, owners can now throw out those hardto-read test strips and do away with hours of research for calculated dosing instructions. Through the easy-to-use SmartTub® app, owners receive easy-to-read and up-to-date results, which simplifies testing and streamlines chemical dosing.
Spa Sense™ is the only sensor that offers precise recommendations based on a specific spa model and water volume. Simply enter in the details about the spa into the SmartTub® system, including product preferences and owners will then receive daily personalised reports and customised dosing instructions, tailored to individual needs. Interested in incorporating a new product into a routine? Owners can scan any watercare product and get instant usage suggestions based on their personal preferences. And because Spa Sense™ is fully integrated with Sundance Spas’ SmartTub® system, automated daily reports are available on a smartphone 24/7.
With Spa Sense™, owners can stop struggling with confusing, colour-coded test strips. Backed by the technology of the patented SUTRO Water Monitoring System, Spa Sense™ recognises the exact spa model and provides precise recommendations of what and how much product to add.
Spa Sense™ features MICROFLUIDIX chip sensing (from the creators of Fluidix® jets), a feature which Sundance advises is the only liquid-based reagent sensor on the market. This cutting-edge microfluidics technology provides some of the most accurate water testing available and simplifies water care from day one and far beyond.

It’s as simple as one, two, three – with everything needed wrapped up in one elegant box. This year, a new, innovative and unique product will launch that will revolutionise the way consumers care for and maintain their hot tubs.
Hydro Balance is, according to its manufacturers, the most comprehensive spa kit on the market, providing a simple and effective three-step formula for cleaner and longer-lasting spa water.
Developed by the team at Total Water Products in Baglan, South Wales, the home of Lo-Chlor Chemicals Europe, Hydro Balance has three main components:
Cleanse - A deep cleaning solution that removes body fats and other unwanted harboured waste from the internal pipe work of hot tubs.
Tonic - A mineral-based dual-action water conditioner that keeps your hot tub water fresh. Revive - A formula that provides ultimate clarity by harnessing the power of natural ingredients that ensure water stays clear and radiant
Each Hydro Balance kit contains a bottle of Cleanse, Tonic and Revive. A basic, three-step process that produces crystal clear hot tub water which is kind to a user’s skin and wallet.
Following over two years of development, Hydro Balance received its product launch at Piscine Global 2024 in Lyon in November last year and will have an official launch at SPATEX 2025 in February.
Sam Grunhut, Business Development Manager at Total Water Products said: “We are very excited about the launch of the product at SPATEX 2025.
“Following our product reveal at Piscine Global 2024, we were delighted with the appetite for the product across Europe and we cannot wait to introduce it to the UK market this year.”

Gecko Alliance, a leader in spa experience technology, used Piscine Global in Lyon to showcase the launch of Gecko waterlab, a groundbreaking water monitoring and dosing recommendation product seamlessly integrated under the spa.
Gecko’s research, including in-depth interviews and analysis of thousands of surveys, confirmed water sanitation as the top pain point for hot tub owners. Driven by a commitment to consumercentric innovation, Gecko, in partnership with General Galactics Systems, developed an innovative technology: Gecko waterlab. The solution continuously monitors water quality, provides real-time insights and offers dosing recommendations to ensure clear and safe water.
Furthermore, owners will enjoy a complete spa experience with Gecko’s new all-in-one mobile app. Completely redesigned, it features a seamless and intuitive user interface, enabling remote control of spa functions such as temperature adjustment, water sanitation monitoring and receiving water maintenance recommendations.
Unlike most market solutions that need frequent interventions, Gecko waterlab’s long-lasting probe requires calibration only once in a four-year lifespan – the longest in the industry. The convenient under-the-spa installation and set-and-forget functionality provide a hassle-free user experience. “It was important to design a solution that won’t trade one maintenance burden for another,’’ said Jérôme Landry, Product Line Manager at Gecko Alliance.
“We are really thrilled to introduce this game-changing product,” added Jean-François Ferland, CEO of Gecko Alliance. “Our goal is to provide the best spa experience in partnership with spa manufacturers. It starts by making spa water sanitation simpler. This new product shows our commitment to innovation and customer intimacy.”

Like many modern families around Europe, the owners of this pool in the Czech Republic wanted to create a space in their garden that would be the focal point of their time together, a place where they could all relax and have fun in the privacy of their home. That dream became a reality with their new NIVEKO pool, which is now not only the aesthetic highlight of the garden, but also the heart of their f amily life.
As the family didn’t have a clear idea of how their dream pool should look, they reached out to NIVEKO’s team of experts. Besides advising them on the choice of pool, they also helped them to configure it to meet all their requirements and also blend in perfectly with the house and garden.
The family loved the gorgeous design of NIVEKO pools right from the very start. After carefully weighing up all the advice from the NIVEKO experts, they opted for a Skimmer
Invisible measuring 8 x 3.5 x 1.5 m, which is instantly eyecatching with its elegant white and state-of-the-art features, such as stairs along the pool width and the white PVC slats hidden away in the slatted cover pit. That lies outside the pool ground plan, meaning it doesn’t take up any space in the pool and is almost invisible. This simple and minimalist feature not only enhances the clean and elegant lines of the pool, but it also makes the most of the space available for swimming and relaxation.
The delighted owners were thrilled with the result, saying “we’ve achieved our dream of a perfect pool” and greatly appreciate not only the beauty and quality of their pool, but also how well NIVEKO managed the entire process, from design, through installation to service.

Therme Group has announced the acquisition of Therme Erding, the largest wellbeing destination globally located near Munich in Germany. With this transaction, Therme Group is set to surpass 3.5 million annual visitors to its portfolio of wellbeing destinations, a new type of social infrastructure that integrates all aspects of wellbeing in a single location.
To complete the acquisition of Therme Erding, Therme Group deployed alongside its own equity a €320m funding package secured from Macquarie Capital’s Principal Finance team – globally recognised as a leader in bespoke and complex real asset financing solutions. The funding, arranged by Deutsche Bank, represents one of the largest single-asset financings in the industry. The acquisition of Therme Erding reinforces Therme Group’s leadership in the
sector and its commitment to advancing the expansion of its state-of-the-art wellbeing infrastructures worldwide.
“Therme Erding is an exceptionally highquality asset and we are delighted to be able to utilise our balance sheet to partner with an experienced operator in Therme Group. “As we expand globally, we are not just growing our portfolio – we are redefining how cities can integrate spaces that prioritise health, connection and inclusion, making urban wellbeing accessible to all. By breaking away from the exclusivity of the traditional wellness sector, we aim to reimagine the sector’s potential and its benefits for society as a whole,” advised Dr Robert Hanea, Founder and CEO of Therme Group.
Myrtha Pools has signed a significant partnership agreement with Aquatics Finland. This partnership focuses on raising awareness about the possibilities of swimming pool construction and renovation in Finland.
As part of the collaboration, Aquatics Finland’s junior team will be renamed the Myrtha Junior Team, and Myrtha Pools is proud to support them on their journey towards the upcoming international aquatics events.
Aquatics Finland will organise environmental seminars within the framework of the collaboration, aimed at professionals in swimming pool construction as well as representatives of municipalities and cities. These seminars will share information and experiences about the latest technologies and solutions that improve the functionality and energy efficiency of swimming pools.
In Australia, a council is facing significant financial challenges and is currently in an unsustainable financial position, largely due to skyrocketing costs of a pool project.
The main issue for North Sydney Council is the increased costs of the North Sydney Olympic Pool redevelopment, combined with reductions in other sources of revenue and rising infrastructure backlogs.
The Council had said the pool would cost AUS$58m when plans were approved in 2020 and the expected completion date was in 2022.
However, The Sydney Morning Herald reported at the end of last year that a project update valued the construction contract at just under AUS$92m, and the council would need to find further additional funds as the forecast costs had risen again and were projected to total over AUS$122m!
In a ground-breaking partnership, renowned pool manufacturer Myrtha Pools has joined forces with Xhawula uMgungundlovu Aquatics NPC (‘Xhawula’, a non-profit organisation) to build in 2025 the much-anticipated South African Aquatics Park (SAAP) on land leased from St Charles College in Pietermaritzburg. This momentous project marks the first collaboration between Myrtha Pools and an NPO in Africa and underlines their shared vision of providing high performance swimming facilities for aspiring athletes and developing swimmers.
The centrepiece of the SAAP is the introduction of the region’s first major 50m pool, built to the highest international standards and featuring a Myrtha moveable bulkhead that allows for a range of configurations. From training and competition in both long and short courses, to allowing two different water polo training sessions to take place at the same time.
“Myrtha Pools is thrilled to be partnering with Xhawula and the SAAP on this project,” said Ricardo Bersi, Myrtha Pools Area Manager. “The commitment shown by Xhawula and its community in creating a world-class pool is a perfect match for the dedication we see in the athletes we serve. We believe the pool will serve as a tangible symbol of their unwavering determination.”
“We are thrilled to partner with Myrtha Pools to bring world-class aquatic infrastructure to Pietermaritzburg,” declared Theo Verster, CEO of the South African Aquatics Park. “The Myrtha Pool at the South African Aquatics Park will not only set the standard for excellence in aquatic sports across Africa but also serve as a beacon of hope and opportunity for our community. Together, we are creating a facility that will inspire the next generation of swimmers, promote water safety and uplift lives through the power of sport.”
Fluidra, together with the Barcelona City Council and INDESCAT – the Catalan sports industry cluster – have teamed up on a new project, BCN Water Solutions. The goal is to ascertain the needs and challenges faced by sports centres and facilities with pools and to identify opportunities to improve sustainability, responsible water use, energy efficiency and the user experience at these facilities.
During the first stage of the collaborative effort, a study was conducted to identify the most pressing challenges. As a result, six key areas for improvement were identified: reduction of water consumption, optimisation of energy costs, digitalisation, enhanced user experience, efficient infrastructure management and predictive maintenance.
In the course of preparing the study, opportunities for improving the use of these spaces were also identified. In particular, digitalisation plays a key role in optimising resource management and improving operating efficiency.
The implementation of technologies such as measurement and
simulation systems, along with the use of control panels in facilities, enables informed decisionmaking. Meanwhile, non-digital solutions, such as pool covers to prevent evaporation, support efforts to improve sustainability and water conservation.
Finding a new approach to enhance the user experience is also important. To that end, it makes sense to transform facilities with pools into multifunctional spaces that can meet the needs of different types of users, integrating athletic, recreational and social uses to create inclusive environments that satisfy current demands.
“At Fluidra, we are committed to innovation and sustainability as fundamental pillars of our business. This project is a clear example of how strategic partnerships with entities such as INDESCAT and the Barcelona City Council allow us to address the major challenges the sector faces and to find solutions that improve the efficiency and environmental impact of pool facilities,” said Carlos Franquesa, Fluidra’s President of Southern Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
Welcome to this first issue of 2025. I trust you are looking forward to the exciting possibilities the year may bring to our industry!
Now that SPATA and BISHTA have agreed to adopt the BSPF’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policy, there are plans to provide more training on this important topic. To keep costs for the course as low as possible, discussions are underway about how to seek funding from the industry. Any news will be shared with members (but the wider industry are welcome to attend the training too). I remain very grateful to the members of the EDI working group for all of their great ideas to date.
Exciting partnerships with like-minded organisations drive development. Industry collaborations span the UK, Europe (EUSA), and globally (WAPSA), fostering shared learning to enhance member value and industry growth and for more about this work, see pages 30 and 31.
SPATEX is also an obvious example of how the industry can work together in partnership so that exhibitors and visitors reap the rewards. Seeing what exhibitors have done to make their stands welcoming and full of products and services is always fantastic. For visitors, discovering new and innovative products from a variety of suppliers all under one roof is the perfect showcase. Due to the excellent location, attendees can stay for more than one night to have enough time to see everything. Along with exhibitors, there is the chance to participate in the entertainment on offer too! Whether
Following a much-needed festive break, in this first issue of 2025, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights a number of subjects including February’s SPATEX exhibition along with networking events in Coventry, plus EDI initiatives and more!
it is the Industry Gala Evening on Tuesday or the SPATEX Party and Casino Evening on Wednesday, there is fun to be had; see below for more details!
Regarding education, a special ‘thank you’ to Luke Griffiths (and his team) for putting on an excellent ISPE workshop programme. Luke is no stranger to SPATEX (having contributed as an exhibitor and speaker at the STA). Thank you also to the other industry bodies, such as the STA, PWTAG, IoS and RLSS UK, for their respective contributions to the SPATEX seminars in Arena 2. There will also be SPATA and BISHTA updates on Wednesday (in Arena 1 and Arena 2) thanks to partnership working with colleagues, including Dr Ant Shepherd at The University of Portsmouth, who will be sharing insights into the warm water immersion research they have been conducting using hot tubs that show a positive impact on helping reduce Type 2 Diabetes. Chris Brady will explain how this can drive more spa sales through development and innovation. Ed Platt (from the Chemical Business Association) will host a session on Pool Chemical Safety: Logging and Learning Lessons from Real-world Incidents. I would also like to mention the work of Dr Geertje Van Keulen from Swansea University Medical School. Dr Van Keulen, a member of The Biofilm Alliance, will discuss ‘A Network for Regulatory Sciences, Academic Research, and Industry Collaboration’. Microbial biofilms, costing an estimated $5 trillion annually, affect health, safety and industry. A lack of regulatory frameworks and standardised protocols hinders progress in biofilm control. This session will outline efforts to address these challenges and drive real-world solutions.
I hope you will enjoy the entertainment and networking opportunities while at the show.
On Wednesday 6 February, the SPATEX Party
starts at 5:00pm, and is a chance to relax and socialise with industry peers. On the Tuesday night, the Industry Gala Evening (which is open to all but advanced booking is required) will reveal the SPATA and BISHTA award winners as part of the 2025 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards ceremony. It is also an opportunity to re-present the 2024 ISPE Awards. Thank you to all the sponsors this year for supporting the event; their logos appear below.
Award winners will have an opportunity to be short-listed for the 2025 EUSA Awards, with the results announced at November’s Piscina & Wellness in Barcelona.
There are many reasons to be a BISHTA and/ or SPATA member, and several of the main ones have been captured in an article that appears in this issue on pages 32 and 33. You are warmly invited to visit stand A1 at SPATEX, where the SPATA and BISHTA team will be on hand to answer any questions. You can also view the gallery of 2025 Awards shortlisted entries and winners on the stand.
By the next issue of SPN, the full details for Dyfed Thompson-Smith’s President’s Weekend will be announced. Dyfed and Amanda look forward to welcoming you to the Southsea and Portsmouth area for their weekend.
Lastly, I would like to celebrate the achievements of a former SPATA President who recently died. David Adams was President from 1986 to 1987, and having founded Golden Coast, he went on to help SPATA for many years. Inspired by his work, one of his sons, Jamie Adams, also served the industry with similar distinction. See page 13 for more details about David’s achievements in the industry.
Enjoy SPATEX and your time in Coventry!
In this issue, the British Swimming Pool Federation highlights the many advantages of working collaboratively with overseas wet leisure industry bodies and how this benefits companies working in the UK sector
The British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF) is delighted to showcase the benefits of its active involvement with two prominent international bodies: the World Alliance of Pool and Spa Associations (WAPSA – www.wapsa.org) and the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA – www.eusaswim.eu). These partnerships reflect the BSPF’s dedication to supporting innovation, sharing expertise and promoting excellence across the UK’s wet leisure industry. By engaging with these global networks, the BSPF aims to equip its members with the tools and insights to stay ahead in a dynamic and competitive landscape.

Here the British Swimming Pool Federation highlights a number of the key UK-based organisations and partners that it works closely with for the betterment of the British pool and spa industries and those operating with them
Since its establishment in 1999, the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF) has been a driving force behind the growth, sustainability, and excellence of the UK Wet Leisure Industry. By fostering partnerships with leading organisations, the BSPF advances safety, quality and innovation within the pool and spa sector. Through close collaboration with esteemed bodies such as the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE), the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG), the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and the Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA), the BSPF is committed to promoting best practice and elevating industry standards.
Continuing its invaluable work on workforce qualifications, the ISPE remains a cornerstone of professional development within the industry. The ISPE is now under the leadership of Luke Griffiths (as General Manager) and Bob Judd (as President). At the 2024 seminar in October near Newbury, SPATEX showed its support by exhibiting and contributing towards the attendance of the new students who were picking up their certificates and/or awards. There will also be an opportunity to recognise the students who have achieved excellence with the re-presentation of the ISPE 2024 awards, as an integral part of the Industry Gala Evening being held on Tuesday 4 February 2025 at SPATEX.
SPATA collaborates closely with PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group) to ensure the highest standards in pool and spa water quality, maintenance and guidance. There are opportunities for SPATA to provide feedback on industry guidance, through the Swimming Pool Water Book (The ‘Blue Book’), other publications and the Code of Practice. Working with PWTAG involves aligning industry practices with PWTAG’s guidelines, ensuring that pool and spa facilities and members’ working practices meet rigorous hygiene and safe operation standards. This collective effort helps safeguard public health and promote professionalism across the sector.
In collaboration with organisations such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), the BSPF is a member
of the National Water Safety Forum (NWSF). Regular updates through weekly members’ e-newsletters and email communications keep members informed about developments that could impact their operations, enabling them to adapt proactively and thrive.
Through their advocacy, SPATA and BISHTA ensure their members’ voices are heard at the highest levels. This representation helps to address industry-specific challenges, such as regulatory changes or economic pressures. By participating in these initiatives, members contribute to the collective strength of their industries, paving the way for future growth and sustainability.
SPATA and BISHTA each offer their own ‘Stakeholder Account’ service for businesses concerned about securing payments. This free, UK-based solution safeguards funds in a secure account, ensuring payments are only released once agreed-upon work is completed. This service fosters trust and smooth transactions, providing businesses and their clients’ peace of mind. Members should be aware that any direct costs associated with this service (e.g., overseas bank charges) are to be reimbursed to BISHTA or SPATA by the member.
The Stakeholder Account service is particularly valuable for building trust with new clients. It eliminates potential disputes over payments and ensures that all parties are satisfied with the agreed outcomes. This service also enhances a member’s reputation for reliability and professionalism, further strengthening their position in the market.
Membership in SPATA and BISHTA also opens the door to prestigious recognition through the British Pool and Hot Tub Awards. Winning an award is not merely a mark of distinction but a powerful marketing tool that enhances a company’s reputation and visibility. These accolades highlight the creativity, technical skill, and innovation demonstrated by members, offering compelling content for press releases, social media campaigns, and promotional materials. Beyond boosting consumer confidence, the recognition gained from these awards often leads to new business opportunities, partnerships and collaborations that drive revenue growth and professional credibility. Many winners also have the chance of being shortlisted as a UK entrant in the European Pool and Spa Awards, organised by EUSA.
Awards are a testament to a company’s expertise and dedication to excellence. They inspire confidence among clients and motivate teams to strive for continuous improvement. Moreover, the promotional opportunities associated with winning or being nominated for an award can significantly boost a business’s market presence and attract new customers.
SPATA and BISHTA’s efforts extend beyond their sectors, as both are proud members of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF). As an experienced pool plant consultant who regularly inspects commercial overflow spas, Robbie Phillips utilises Pipe Camera Technology to assess the condition of spa pipes during his visits, and the images prove that infections in spas can be linked to the state of the pipe work and circulation. As he explains here, these camera inspections reveal three major concerns in the design and operation of spa facilities
Spas present an operator with specific problems which contribute to potentially a high-risk facility i.e. low volume, relative high bathing load per volume of water, nutrients in the form of cosmetics, body fats, high temperature and water as a transmission agent. As a consequence, there is the potential for bacteria to multiply rapidly if the chemical parameters are not adhered to constantly and precisely, and most importantly chemical contact is optimum throughout the whole system.
The reality of this, if these parameters are being compromised e.g. the automatic dosing system not operating correctly or the plant operator not being given the training required to detect and recognise a problem, is that the spa could be endangering its clients through organic contamination and bacterial growth.
Using Pipe Camera Technology, we are able to investigate the condition of pipe work and the overall system. Together with ATP bio swabbing for real time contamination detection, water and surfaces can be quickly tested for organic contamination. These detection systems can provide rapid signs of poor design, maintenance and testing.
The revealing images at the bottom of this page were captured in fully functioning, operational spas.
Five major faults identified are: Gravity fed pipe from the spa tank to the balance tank. It is my contention that because the flow in these pipes are fed by gravity alone, the flow is relatively low and
are ideal sites for biofilm to attach and grow rapidly. At precise times, the towers formed, release massive quantities of pathogenic bacteria (harmful to humans).
Corrugated pipes with undulating surfaces where biofilm can be protected and thrive away from the water flows and disinfectant. This in combination with low flow can be a major risk.
Blockages in pipes, which can be caused by system failure or deliberate customer action − these again will have similar impact on the colonisation of pipe work, little or no flow and disinfectant.
Poor backwashing and cleansing regimes which do not take into account bathing loads.
To compound matters if water balance is not controlled, calcium build up acts as a perfect site for biofilm growth!
Whilst camera images and bio swabbing can give definitive evidence, there can be tell tale signs that often indicate the presence of biofilm; these can be present individually or in combination with cloudy water, or ribbon like strands of matter in the spa tank, or a marked increase in disinfectant use, or musty smells in and around the spa and plant, or inconsistent bacterial results that cannot be traced back to operational failures.
The following maintenance and management solutions are based on practical observations, and must be conducted in line with appropriate risk assessments and safe risk controls being applied. They should be applied together alongside the relevant best
practice advice from PWTAG and the Health Protection Agency:
• Wherever possible always use pipes which are not corrugated in all areas of installation. If possible, replace such pipe.
• Install pipes which can be easily disconnected, checked and cleansed.
• Regularly clean pipes with soft brushes, pressure hosing or specialised methods.
• As a part of the spa’s regular maintenance, physically clean and super chlorinate the system.
• Apply a purge chemical which also physically breaks down the biofilm structure.
• Regularly check for blockages and remove.
• Consider the use of chlorine dioxide-based chemicals periodically, when the spa is not being used, to prevent the formation of biofilm.
• Ensure your Spa Safe Operations and Technical Operation Procedures are robust.
• If the spa is shut down for any period ensure there is a suitable risk assessment and controls.
• Ensure the spa is tested chemically, at the correct intervals, with suspect results reacted to appropriately and all reactions recorded.
• Bacterial testing is carried out in line with National Recommendations.
• Make sure your spa plant operators are fully qualified and trained and are regularly kept up to date with industry best practice via CPDs, including a new Spa Operators CPD.
Whilst this research focuses on commercial spa experience, there will also be similar problems with domestic spas.

attractive in the long term.
Founded in 1945, the Swiss family owned business has been one of the first companies to develop and sell automatic pool cleaning robots since 1970. Thanks to the constant search for improvements, close cooperation with specialised suppliers and the use of high-quality materials, the qualified employees create top-quality technological and long lasting products.
One of the company’s popular options is clubliner series which integrates the technological innovations and know-how derived from years of work in the most compact form. High-quality materials, perfect workmanship, intelligent driving system and a unique filter system don‘t just guarantee a long service life, they make the Mariner 3S clubliner unbeatable in cost efficiency. Developed for pools up to 25m long, it cleans all pool floors as well as paddling pools to a water depth of as little as 20cm with unmatched thoroughness and also deals with the pool’s walls.
Sophisticated water routing guarantees effective cleaning performance across the entire width of the appliance. The dirty water is first channelled through the filter and only then through the pump. This protects the pump from clogging and damage. Thanks to flow optimisation, no dirt is whirled up that could escape cleaning. Two lamella filters guarantee a large filter surface. The spacious filter box can be conveniently removed from the top of the robot and carried to the cleaning area without any loss of dirt.
Since its launch in 2022, the X-Warrior Cordless Pool Cleaner from Ocea UK has more than proven itself to the trade and pool owners. With up to an impressive 8 hours of endurance and prices starting at just £899 Retail, the versatile pool cleaner is suitable for all pool sizes, finishes and user requirements. Whether a pool needs infrequent or daily cleans, the model performs every time. With timer-delay and a selection of pre-programmed cleaning times of 30 mins, 1 hour and 2 hours the X-Warrior can be programmed to suit. There is even an app where users can set up programmes and adjust these with ease at the touch of a button. Unlike other cleaners, the X-Warrior
plots a path before it starts the clean. Using its precise Gyroscope motion sensor and six probes, it gathers spatial data to plot its path and avoid any obstacles. No more tripping over cables at the edge of the pool, as it’s completely cordless – just plug the cleaner in to recharge when required. For added convenience, the X-Warrior can be left in the pool when it is not in action, or leave it to clean under the cover when the pool is not in use. Removal from the pool is straightforward too – simply use a telescopic pole with the hook provided and it’s as easy as that, with the cleaner always ensuring it returns to the edge of the pool at the end of each cycle or when the battery is low. Alan Thorne, Director of Ocea UK advised: “By offering demo models to the trade they are able to demonstrate the product to their customers before committing. The influx of orders from this process has been fantastic and we would encourage anyone to give it a go, we are confident they will love it. UK stock is available for next day delivery.” SPN
The industry’s annual show returns to the Coventry Building Society Arena in February and the organising team have once again pulled out all the stops to make it an event to remember. More than just an exhibition, SPATEX is also the UK’s largest networking opportunity for the pool and spa trade. Here, we cover all the news from both the organisers and exhibitors, highlight various products that can be seen, plus take look at the educational opportunities
By Jon Wadeson
Running for what is now its eleventh year in the West Midlands, SPATEX returns to the Coventry Building Society Arena between 4 to 6 February and with the annual UK show being the first opportunity in 2025 to see a bumper crop of new products, visitors should expect a healthy amount innovation to be on display this year spanning the various sectors that the show now covers.
To qualify this further, well over 100 participating companies will be present, including a handful of names that have never participated before. These include Aqua Therapy UK, Bellagio Spas, Bullfrog Spas, EcoAir Box, Sizzler Outdoor Kitchens and Valerium Canopies to name just a few, and these brands will line up with more familiar names and exhibition regulars to provide a truly diverse range of products that span the wet leisure industry and increasingly, garden and outdoor leisure sectors too.
Since moving to the Midlands, the threeday event has firmly cemented its place on the exhibition calendar and as far as wet leisure is concerned in the UK and beyond, it is now the only event that covers the full spectrum of core wet leisure products and more. Something which is being recognised further afield as this year’s event once again features an international flavour with exhibitors drawn from 11 countries.
As sponsors of the New Products Zones within the halls, we certainly hope to see as
many new brands and products around the exhibition as possible.
For those unfamiliar with the exhibition, attendees can expect to see an impressive array of pools, swim spas, hot tubs and ice baths on display around the show hall, with a number of them providing working demos which is a huge bonus to visitors. In addition, expect to find just about anything associated with each of these products within the hall too.
This wide range of products and services is largely down to an organising team that has worked incredibly hard to create as broad an offering as possible, with many spa, hot tub and wellness companies now viewing the show as a crucial, must-attend annual event where they can showcase both their products and themselves.
With energy costs rising and with concerns surrounding the environment, there’s always a big focus on new, greener products that are both sustainable and energy efficient too.
Energy-saving will also be a major topic in the show’s very popular double seminar programme. SPATEX is widely recognised as providing the best source of free information in the industry and it’s thanks to the tremendous support of a large number of esteemed associations that support the event – namely, Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE), Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA), Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS), Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG), Water Management Society
(WMSoc), Legionella Control Association (LCA), Institute of Swimming (IoS) and, of course, the British Swimming Pool Federation’s SPATA (Swimming Pool & Allied Trades Association) and BISHTA (British & Irish Spa & Hot Tub Association). Combined, they bring their individual knowledge to create a varied programme of seminars that combines hands-on practical advice with technical know-how plus, essential health and safety guidance and compliance. This year, SPATEX will again play host to two seminar arenas, with free to attend workshops taking place in each across all three days.
All workshops hosted by the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE) in Arena 1 award Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points plus a Certificate of Attendance – a valuable record of the courses that have been attended. Any STA seminars attended will also grant half a point to attendees.
In Arena 2, visitors can find a variety of experts who will be imparting their knowledge across a wide range of wet leisure topics.
With plenty of products for people to see, once again, the SPN team will be walking the show rather than taking a stand.
With this issue going to press in advance of the show, there’s always the chance of last minute changes, so for a full and up-todate list of all the exhibitors or any show news, visit the SPATEX website (www.spatex. co.uk) which also has lots of other useful information regarding the show which is
sure to help attendees plan their visit more effectively, including a link to pre-book free on site parking which is a new development for this year.
In short, as ever, there’s a lot to do and see at SPATEX, so read on and we’ll hopefully whet your appetite for what is sure to be a great event in Coventry this year.

With demand across the hot tub and spa sector showing signs of a recovery, manufacturers and distributors are keen to ensure the New Year brings new opportunities – and energy efficiency and value for money will be key over the next 12 months and beyond. With that in mind, we look at hot tubs for the year ahead including enhanced and fresh models supplied by both established and new brands which feature the latest in design and technology
By Jon Wadeson
It’s no secret that for a variety of reasons, the hot tub sector has endured a challenging time over the last 24 months, but some positive signs have finally started to emerge. And whilst it’s still too early to predict how the sector will fare over the next 12 months, for many, it does feel that the bottom was in last year and while the line may not be a steep or a straight one, the general trajectory is up going forward.
So with demand for the year ahead still somewhat uncertain, pressure remains on both sales teams and manufacturers to offer not only the best possible service and value for money products, but also something different or in many cases, something new. Often, that means the introduction of new ranges, but it could also be enhancing existing models with the latest technological innovations, all with a view to keeping that all important step ahead of the competition.
So what’s on offer for the season ahead?
We round up just some of the latest models and brands looking to make their mark in this constantly evolving sector.

After using the infrared therapy in sauna applications for some time and seeing the benefits customers were achieving, the Jacuzzi® team decided to do additional research to develop infrared light therapy into a hot tub application.
The Jacuzzi® team worked with a PhD at the Cleveland Clinic to develop a research white paper on this specific technology and its benefits. The team then began working with an experienced development partner to identify the exact wavelength output requirements for the near IR (NIR) and the Red Light therapy in the underwater application.
The result – The J-LX® Collection was developed to give users the most rejuvenating and regenerating hydrotherapy experience available. That feeling is designed to last long after the hot tub session has finished.
Both hot tub models in the J-LX® Collection feature the FX-IR Seat, which
performs the Jacuzzi® brand’s most advanced hydrotherapy. The FX-IR Seat combines full-back and neck hydromassage with near Infrared and deep Red Light therapy to target deep tissue within the lumbar region of the lower back. The J-LX® hot tub offers an open seating configuration for six or more bathers while the J-LXL can accommodate five to six bathers and also features a lounge seat.
The J-LX® Collection was the first to feature IR and Red Light therapy in an underwater application. However, since its introduction, both retailers and end-users have benefitted from the addition of these features into models within the J-400™ Collection, plus Jacuzzi® PowerPro™ and PowerActive™ swim spa models too.
Oasis Spas are thrilled to announce the launch of a stunning new range of hot tubs called Equinox.
Consisting of six models, the range features three Lite models and three Pro options. All models are produced in Alpine White acrylic with a dark wood side skirt and each comes with a dark grey cover.
The six options all feature Oasis Spas’ new edge foam insulation which is injected onto the top quarter of each spa. This results in a significant reduction in heat loss whilst leaving access to all pipes, jets and equipment. In fact, the new Equinox range includes all four elements of the brand’s heat loss retention:
• Silver thermal insulation sheet on the base of the hot tub
• Thicker silver thermal insulation on the sides of the skirt
• Full foam insulation in the top quarter of the hot tub
• Hot tub cover.
All models also come with colour changing LED lights (five of which feature corner LEDs), Ozone water treatment system and each features Spatech controls, with the Pro models benefitting from more advanced CA300 systems with a five-year Spatech warranty instead of the two-years found on each of the Lite models.
Air massage jets and pop-up fountains can also be found on all three Pro models which as their name suggests, feature higher levels of specifications across the board and more advanced options on the majority of their equipment.
For owners who want to enhance their spa further, optional Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and speakers are offered across the whole Equinox range.

Aquaservice UV, designed and supplied for Pools
For many commercial and increasingly domestic settings, when it comes to the effective treatment of water in swimming pools and spas, UV systems have become an established choice. Their success is no real surprise when you consider the many benefits on offer from these ultraviolet systems, but their big selling point is a large reduction in chlorine use. As more installations make the switch to UV, additional products have become available. Here we shed some light on some of the options that are currently available
By Jon Wadeson
Ultraviolet light, or UV light as it’s most commonly shortened to, is, when used correctly, an extremely successful disinfectant. UV’s effectiveness lies in its ability to inactivate viruses, bacteria and pathogens and in the world of wet leisure, that includes the nasty Cryptosporidium and Giardia variants which are able to survive in water despite the presence of various sanitisers.
In addition to its biocide action, UV has a powerful oxidising effect which successfully removes organic pollution from pool and spa water. So when UV is used in conjunction with chlorine, the various chloramines that cause eye and skin irritation are turned into easily removed by-products. This action leads to healthier bathing for swimmers and improved working conditions for staff in commercial environments.
Although hugely effective, UV is still a secondary disinfection process that is used alongside, primarily chlorine, as the principal disinfectant in swimming pool and spa water. The reason for this is that UV only treats water as it passes through the lamp, therefore a sanitiser is needed to provide a constant defence throughout the rest of the water system.
So whilst chlorine use is minimised, it still plays an essential role in providing the safest possible water.
Through the use of UV, it is possible to reduce sanitiser levels drastically by as much as 80% and down to as little as 0.5ppm. In addition to requiring less chemicals, water treated with UV will also require less backwashing plus heating costs will be lowered too – both of which are great given the current climate!
So in summary, the water in a UV treated pool or spa is better for anyone using or operating it, it uses less chemicals, requires less backwashing and both water and heating costs are reduced – what’s not to like?
With so many benefits, it’s little wonder that UV has become a popular choice for pools of
all sizes and its use has expanded beyond the commercial sector and found its way into an increasing number of residential installations. There are plenty of options available to choose from for both sectors too, so in this latest issue, we shed some light on just some of the ultra effective options that are making water safer through the power of UV.
According to Norwegian manufacturer Aquaservice, their AquaUV Pool Line UV System (AQS-PL UV for short) is the most versatile swimming pool UV system on the market. It’s designed to treat all types of pool usage, from heavy use children’s swimming pools to low use diving or private pools.
Of course, each type of usage requires a different type of UV set up – no one type of UV system will fit all swimming pool usage and requirements – and systems are offered with flow rates ranging from 6m3/h to 580m3/h and the total maximum lamp power output spanning 0.4kW to 8.4kW. For ease of installation, connections can be amended to suit pipework and in addition, having the ability to supply bespoke options when required, makes it one of the most unique swimming pool UV systems available on the market.
These medium pressure UV lamp systems offer a minimum lamp life of 10,000 hours, and as with the company’s Pool Line filters,
they have been designed to comply with NSF 50 standard. Other features of the AQS-PL UV systems include:
• Corrosion Resistant Epoxy Coating
• Power Stepping
• Manual or Automatic wiper
• BUS connection option
• Temperature Switch or Sensor.
AQS-PL UV systems emit polychromatic UV radiation. The multiple wavelengths in the medium pressure UV lamps destroy the molecular bonds of combined chlorine/ chloramine compounds. Therefore, UV removal of chloramines is a non-chemical and reliable method to control combined chlorine in swimming pools. In addition, each system is sized and designed to achieve a minimum of a 99.9% reduction of cryptosporidium, therefore guaranteeing safe bathing for all with no risk of chlorine resistant organisms surviving in the water.
AstralPool UK and BIO-UV have been working together for just over two years with the Hampshire-based distributor supplying the French manufacturer’s UV Stainless Steel, UV FW and UV NEO systems for residential pools and UV MPL, UV FW and NSF certified triogen® UV CF systems for commercial installations.
Customers are constantly looking for more environmentally friendly solutions to treat and disinfect their pool water automatically.
For over 30 years, BIO-UV Group met these challenges by offering alternative technologies (UV-C, salt electrolysis and ozone) and complementary solutions to treat water, guaranteeing flawless hygiene and bathing comfort. Some of the advantages of the BIO-UV range of UV-C products on offer include:
• Mirror-polished 316L stainless steel, passivated 316L stainless steel or PVC reactors ranges
• Dedicated electronic ballasts guaranteeing maximum UV lamp efficiency and integrated control
• Lamp operating indicator light for each lamp
• Insignificant pressure loss
• Inlet / outlet connections using unions supplied along with fastening lugs.
Easy to install and maintain, the range features models to suit different pool sizes, each designed for long service life with lamps lasting up to 13,000 hours.
So, if a more natural disinfection system with low operating costs sounds appealing for either commercial or domestic pool clients, AstralPool UK are able to offer a range of UV water treatment solutions.
New for 2025, the Certikin Titanium UV Clarifier is up to 1.5 times more effective than a standard Certikin UV unit at helping to prevent green water in swimming pools. The system is made using the latest photocatalytic technology, improving clarity by neutralising algae, bacteria and viruses and lined with a thick and polished titanium tube to clear green pool water fast, allowing the pool to be operated at a lower free
chlorine level.
It features a high output, energy efficient ballast, housed in a fully serviceable control box and is available in two sizes – 55w and 110w.
The two new models join the existing range of Certikin UV systems for which there are seven models available for pools between 15,000 (15m3) and 150,000 (150m3) litres. They are fully serviceable which means both the lamp and control box can be replaced should there be a problem. The control box uses less plastic to produce and the serviceability means less plastic waste. Additionally, the control box is fitted to a bracket which allows the unit to be wall mounted.
Available through leading distributors including Certikin, Lighthouse, Plastica and SCP, the H.R.UV-C one is of the newest members to the Elecro family.
Designed using the latest knowledge of highly reflective reactor casing materials, the H.R.UV-C features the highest UV reflective index on the market thus optimising the UV-C radiation and dramatically increasing its performance.
This is achieved thanks to the E-PTFE reach chamber which is extremely repellent, maintaining UV reflectivity. Up to 95% reflection amplifies the exposure of microorganisms to UV.
It’s win, win as no harmful gases or by-products are produced in the process and the powerful sterilisation eliminates the smell of chlorine. It is highly effective in neutralising bacteria, viruses, algae and fungi that traditional chemicals cannot.
The inside surface casing is extremely repellent and therefore self-cleaning.
Intelligent electronics indicate when the lamps are not producing sufficient UV-C and need to be changed, ensuring the unit is always performing optimally.
The H.R.UV-C is compatible with, and complements, all traditional treatment methods including; chlorine, bromine, active oxygen / hydrogen peroxide and salt electrolysis. A narrow and extended chamber ensures maximum exposure to the powerful UV-C. It is easy to use and install, can be
retrofitted to any existing pool system – a self-cleaning system, reducing the need for maintenance.
The intelligent lamp life indicator signals when the lamps are no longer producing sufficient UV-C and need to be changed, ensuring the unit is always performing optimally and has a long lamp life, up to 9,000 hours.
The H.R.UV-C is available in three sizes: Mini (30m3), Single (55m3) and Double (110m3) and in three models − Standard, Classic and Pro.
From the smallest hydrotherapy pools to leisure centres, spas and water parks, Evoqua ATG has a UV system to meet the needs of the aquatics industry with flow capability from 5 up to 5,000m3/h. One of the more recent additions to the Evoqua ATG product range is the compact Wafer® UV generator.
It’s about one third of the size of comparative units making it easy to install and retrofit in the most restricted of plant rooms. The eight models in the range use the latest in medium pressure UV lamp technology, in single and twin lamp configurations to handle flows from 5 to 600m3/hr. As with Evoqua ATG’s WF range it includes UV intensity monitoring, overtemperature control and automatic cleaning. Lamp life is 9,000 hours, and the enhanced safety quick release Twistlok™ UV lamps can be changed without removing the wiper motor, so maintenance requirements are significantly reduced by comparison with other systems. The SPECTRA control system includes features such as data
stream monitoring, process interlocks and programmable set points and it interfaces with most BMS protocols. A key feature is variable power stepping from 100% down to 30%, allowing operators to optimise the operational power of their system to match bather loads and pool opening times.
Specific models within the range are also validated to the US EPA UVDGM validation protocol making them the units ideal for validated applications.
Available through Fairlocks Pool Products, the PURIQ UV-C Bright Series water purifier offers optimal technology for crystal-clear water without the need for multiple chemicals and is kinder for water users too.
Featuring the latest technology, the lamp placed in the pool water emits a very powerful UV-C light with a wavelength of exactly 253.7nm that kills practically all bacteria, viruses, algae and moulds. Using a UV light provides non-chemical disinfection, enabling effective primary control over waterborne bacteria, which can benefit both public and private pools.
This results in optimal purification, reducing the need by 80% of chlorine and other chemical usage. The PURIQ UV-C system, with its 100% eco-friendly operation, provides more natural, healthier water. The extra wide SAE 316 stainless steel housing extends the time the water is exposed to the strong UV-C radiation while also minimising

Whether in a domestic or commercial setting, providing a clean and safe environment is an absolute must for any swimming pool owner. When it comes to pool water treatments (and putting UV only systems aside), traditional methods are still popular, effective and proven, but with an everincreasing range of alternative products and systems on offer, is there such a thing as the best solution?
By Jon Wadeson
With numerous options available for a variety of settings, this issue we examine what’s on offer
When it comes to the ownership and operating of swimming pools, effective water treatment and the peace of mind it provides should be at the top of the list of priorities in both residential and commercial environments. After all, these products are supposed to promote enjoyment and relaxation, so the last thing that’s needed for anyone responsible for the running of a pool and the upkeep of the water within it are doubts about cleanliness and therefore the safety of a pool’s users.
So implementing the right products and water treatment options that are proven to work time after time is a huge factor for owners and operators. If automated, well that’s better still, particularly when time is tight or when distractions could lead to any manual treatment being missed.
Until relatively recently, that meant relying on just a handful of options, however there are now a number of methods available for the precise and perfect treatment of water, most of which are done automatically. This expansion of options has been partly driven by a want to reduce traditional chemical use. Cost, convenience, availability and eco credentials are all factors too.
Here, and putting UV aside as we’ve covered that particular sector in the pages prior, we take a closer look at a variety of water treatments and systems which are providing a clean and safe environment for bathers in pools both big and small.
Since its inception in 2000, BIO-UV Group has grown to become one of the leading companies in water disinfection and treatment systems. Here in the UK, AstralPool are their partner and exclusively distribute the innovative and environmentally friendly solutions which are based on UV-C, Ozone and AOP technologies. Each one is ecological and an automatic process that requires minimal addition of chemicals to the pool. This guarantees wellbeing and bathing
comfort by reducing irritation.
For the residential market, BIO-UV has developed and launched the innovative O’Clear concept which combines UV light and salt electrolysis. Easy to install and compatible with all types of pools, it is a unique water treatment system that guarantees a perfectly disinfected pool without the addition of chemicals. The water circulates inside a reactor where the UV-C, associated with O’Clear’s exclusive electrodes, eradicates all microorganisms, and thus ensures a flawless remanence with only 0.5g/litre of salt.
AstralPool are also responsible for the Zodiac brand in the UK and with the Zodiac eXO® iQ salt water chlorinators, are able to offer a truly efficient and automatic disinfection solution which is easy to use and provides complete water treatment with less maintenance.
All pool water quality management functions are centralised in a single interface allowing automatic pH and chlorination regulation as well as management of other pool equipment such as pump, heater and
responsible for the
lighting. With its long-lasting electrode and high-quality sensor the eXO® solution offers optimal water quality all the time. As proof of its reliability, the chlorinator comes with a three-year unconditional warranty.
The eXO® iQ also has the option of connecting to the popular iAquaLinkTM system for increased convenience with remote and real-time control of your water quality and pool’s equipment from your smartphone or tablet.
Enjoy a healthier swim with Mr Light. Supplied by Certikin, it proudly boasts a 1,000pppm salt level – believed to be the lowest salinity level in the UK market. This reduces salt usage, promotes sustainability and extends the lifespan of pool equipment with three-times lower salt levels.
Using the latest in Inverter technology, Mr Light automatically adjusts the output current to prevent over chlorination. Thanks
to the 120% hyper disinfection boost mode, Mr Light enables the pool to recover fast from challenging conditions, whether it’s raining or sunny, party or holiday. The ingenious technology enables seamless interaction with variable-speed pumps and other devices to make it super user-friendly and efficient.
The stylish touch screen controller includes an inbuilt peristaltic pump for pH dosing, an integrated pH and temperature probe, ORP probe and a flow switch, all housed within the salt cell for monitoring the water quality.
It has self-cleaning cycles of 2, 4 or 6 hrs (4hrs default) and an average cell life of 10,000 hrs. Both the controller and salt cell carry a five-year warranty.
A prime focus of scientific advances today is ceramic nano crystal technology and it is this which is used in the Quantum to create one of the most powerful forms of sterilisation – photocatalytic oxidation. Manufactured by Elecro Engineering and available from Certikin, Lighthouse, Plastica and SCP UK, Quantum eliminates contaminants leaving water fresh and clean.
Easy to install, Quantum gives peace of mind as dangerous organisms such as cryptosporidium and adenoviruses are destroyed by the photocatalytic process ensuring pool users are kept safe. Several natural processes occur as the pool water passes through the unit with only pure water returning to the pool.
As a result of the processes occurring inside the Quantum, including the production of hydroxyl radicals, the treated water is
free of all oil-based substances such as sun creams and all organics including urea are totally removed resulting in sparkling water.
Quantum also reduces the need for chemicals in the pool and helps eliminate the smell of chlorine.
Once installed, this cost-effective solution requires no maintenance; it is equipped with an intelligent lamp life indicator so when the UV lamp which initiates the photocatalytic reaction needs to be replaced this is displayed. Quantum is compatible with both salt and sea water and is available in three sizes. Choose from Mini (35m3), Single (65m3) or Double (130m3) to meet the specific needs of the pool’s capacity.
New Adaptive Response Technology, ‘ART’ for short, is set to be a gamechanger for electrochlorination water disinfection.
This innovative technology, developed by Gaffey, is built into their range of Hyprolyser® iSEC® electrochlorination systems and allows them to adjust to constant changes in both environment and site conditions. Addressing increasing climatic influences such as high ambient and warm feed water conditions in plantrooms and overcoming fluctuating water pressures is essential to manage during daily operations.
Hyprolyser® ART can detect the smallest irregularity within its process and automatically self-regulate to function seamlessly, ensuring continual and consistent chlorine generation for effective and efficient chlorination. On-screen annotations instruct remedial actions to be taken by the operator to
avoid unnecessary interruption to chlorine generation.
Gaffey are also simultaneously launching their new Hyprolyser® iSEC® High Capacity Skid 250-2000 system, where a single unit alone can deliver up to a huge equivalent of 291 litres of sodium hypochlorite 14% per day to treat up to 4,000m3 of pool water for example.
Hyprolyser® electrochlorination systems are fully compliant under HSE/BPR and deliver real COSHH and cost saving benefits.
Generating non-hazardous <1% sodium hypochlorite from salt, water and electricity, Hyprolyser® is one of the most sustainable water disinfection solutions available for pools today.
Managing Director Phil Gaffey said in a statement: “We are proud to be more than just manufacturers in the water disinfection industry. Pushing technology forward is always our goal and by listening to industry feedback combined with improving technology, our in-house technical team have made some great strides that will make a real impact for our customers all around the world.”

Waterco’s energy efficient Hydrochlor MK3 Mineral Chlorinator chlorinates the pool making it healthy, crystal clear and ready to swim in year-round. A saltwater chlorinated pool in fact requires considerably less attention than a standard chlorinated pool. Hydrochlor can work with a standard salt pool, but the company’s engineers didn’t stop there – they also designed it to work in synergy with Waterco’s Mineral Crystals to transform your pool into a therapeutic oasis. Hydrochlor uses the latest Switch Mode
Power Technology to increase energy efficiency by over 50%, significantly reducing power consumption. Hydrochlor draws less current and this translates to high power conversion and less energy wastage, without compromising chlorine output.
Its unique Intelligent Power Pack intuitively recognises the size of the connected chlorinator cell and automatically adjusts its power output to suit. This allows customers to stock one power pack, rather than a power pack per cell – while simultaneously reducing inventory.
Also, the cell housings are identical, which means that the salt cell can be easily upgraded or downgraded.
An alarm indicates when salt levels in the pool water are too high or too low; if the pool is running beyond the maximum recommended salt level, the chlorinator will limit its output to protect the chlorinator cell.
Hydrochlor includes an in-built, easy to use timer equipped with battery back up, which will maintain settings for up to 150 hours and its self-cleaning chlorinator cell has the added ability to reverse its polarity and automatically clean calcium build-up from its electrodes. If no water flow is detected in the chlorinator cell, Hydrochlor automatically switches off the chlorine production to protect the chlorinator cell activates the No Flow LED indicator. SPN

the run time of a pool pump, Waterco offers several variable speed Eco pumps capable of moderating their motor speed, reducing water flow when required and reducing energy consumption by up to 82% compared to a standard motor pump. Lowering a pump’s flow rate not only significantly decreases the pump’s energy requirements, but also reduces water flow resistance in pool equipment and plumbing. Even though the pump may need to be operated for longer, it is far more efficient pumping low water flow compared to high water flow.
The ECO-V is ideal for domestic swimming pools with ancillary systems such as heating, in-floor cleaning, fountains and vacuum cleaning. Owners can operate the product on a low (ECO) speed setting for the majority of its running time.
Available in single-phase 1.00hp and 1.50hp versions, the three-speed Lacronite ECO-V variable pump is equipped with the very latest permanent magnet brushless DC motor, reducing water flow when needed to lower energy consumption.
“A few weeks ago I made a resolution to pay more attention to fitness. Not my fitness, you understand, but everyone else’s,” says Adam Clark, General Manager at Golden Coast, who in this issue provides his thoughts on health and fitness
Iwonder how many people out there made a New Year’s resolution and how many of them were something to do with their health and fitness? Of course, lots of those resolutions will be broken by now but it just all goes to show how important health and fitness – how we look and how we feel – has become to people in 2025.
From online influencers to 24-hour gyms and fitness clubs, people want to train when they want to train and nothing could satisfy that need as well as your own pool, spa or sauna.
I know that the wet leisure industry has considered itself a part of the health and fitness industry for some time now but are we really aware of how powerful the growth in fitness has been and just how it will influence the future of our businesses?
One of the ways we can gauge the growth of the fitness industry in the UK is to look at gym membership. In 2024, there were 10.7 million gym members in the UK, which is a 4.1% increase from 2023. This means that 15.9% of the UK population is a gym member, higher than the pre-pandemic figure high of 2019.
That’s a lot.
Those sort of figures point to fitness becoming more important across the whole of society and particularly the more affluent members. Wealth is increasingly being spent on health.
One of the drivers of the fitness industry, for right or wrong, are the body images of influencers on social media channels and where as those bodies can be toned and honed by Crossfit or weight training, a swimmer’s physique is still seen as one of the most popular and aspirational shapes. Pools, whether they are indoor or outdoor, and swim spas give people an opportunity 24/7 to work on that ‘swimmer look. And, of course, you’d be well advised to get off your exercise bike and into the water. Swimming is one of the best cardio-vascular regimes available.
Ozempic seems set to launch a fad for the
weight-loss pill.
The acceptance of that idea, of using a drug to treat a health and fitness issue is perhaps built on the back of the biggest pharmacological business success stories of modern times. Statins, used to reduce cholesterol, are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs in Britain with over 50 million doses a year. However sauna bathing can help reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. One study found that ten sauna sessions in a Finnish sauna over three weeks led to a statistically significant decrease in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.
Of course, there are side effects: sauna bathing helps you look and feel great.
The UK’s health and wellness industry is one of the largest and most diverse in the world. It makes up over 8% of our GDP. We come in fifth in a worldwide table ranking just behind the US, China, Germany and Japan. All countries with much bigger populations than ours.
Hydrotherapy can contribute to mental health. Spas and saunas can encourage
The benefits of wet leisure are real and so, to a large extent customers are buying the health benefits that we have been talking about”
de-stressing and deep relaxation. Swimming, soaking and sweat bathing benefit the head and the heart. The wet leisure industry has never been so well positioned to benefit from a huge focus of interest from society as a whole.
What we offer, people want.
Increasingly people are looking for a highly personalised and inspirational installation. They want their pool, spa or sauna to be unique; to be an expression of themselves, their wants and needs. This might mean that it has a particular design aesthetic or it might be an installation that has a very low carbon footprint or uses very little energy. A steam room might be the focus of a wellness suite. A small spa might become central to an exercise regime if it is in fact a swim spa with a counter-current machine.
When you are selling something it’s always important to know what the customer thinks they are buying. It looks as if a lot of your customers are going to be thinking that they are buying health, a better body, a calmer mind and contentiously, longevity.
The benefits of wet leisure are real and so, to a large extent customers are buying the health benefits that we have been talking about but when you are putting together a quote or a proposal it may well be worth reminding them of that.
My commitment to Crossfit wasn’t a resolution it was a promise to myself, and one that will stand the test of time.
I think the wellness market is going to endure as well.
According to surveys, only half of consumers rate their physical health as ‘good’ despite 85% wanting to prioritise it in their daily lives.
Seventy eight per cent of consumers have purchased sport and wellness equipment, products or tech in the last two years and 78% are interested in buying or subscribing to new health, fitness and wellness products and services in the next two years. Okay, so there will be some tennis rackets and jogging shoe figures in amongst those statistics, but there will be pools and spas and saunas as well.
In my opinion, our industry is looking at a very healthy future.
