NEWS OLYMPIAN’S POOL CAMPAIGN GETS BACKING FROM ALEX SALMOND Olympic swimmer Hannah Miley has received the support of MP Alex Salmond and the pair have joined forces to campaign for a new eight-lane swimming pool in Hannah’s home town of Inverurie. The current fourlane main pool in the Aberdeenshire town is nearly 50 years old and has a waiting list for swimming lessons of more than 1,500 people, resulting in non swimmers of all ages facing waits of up to 18 months. There are plans already in place to replace the ageing facility with a six-lane pool, however, champion swimmer Hannah said: “An eightlane facility would be an obvious choice for a brand new pool,” and added: “I’ve trained in many pools over my career and the ability to have eight lanes over the chosen six would not only allow you to increase the capacity for lessons and training but have the ability to hold national competitions such as the Scottish Short Course Championships.”

YOUNGSTERS TO MAKE THEIR MARK AT NEW CITY POOL Youngsters from Worcester are making their mark on the city’s brand new swimming pool by creating an eightmetre high piece of artwork. About 100 children from local schools have taken part in workshops to help create the striking designs that will feature prominently at the new £10.5m pool, which is due to open early next year. At the end of the year, the children’s artwork will be brought together in a composition piece that will decorate the frontage of the new pool in what is being likened to a ‘modern version of a stained glass window’.

Hotel’s Spa Users Relax Under Stunning Ceiling Design A new £4.5m hotel spa features a dramatic £60,000 timber ceiling, manufactured by a leading architectural products manufacturer – Hunter Douglas. The state-of-the-art Clubspa and Evergreen Spa at Kenwick Park Hotel in Louth, Lincolnshire, opened 20 months after its former leisure facility was destroyed by fire. The building features a 20-metre indoor swimming pool complete with 600m2 Hunter Douglas 111mm module linear open solid wood ceiling system, which was specified by Nottingham-based Franklin Ellis Architects, which undertook the interior design. One of the most important aspects of the ceiling design was that it should look as similar as possible to the original timber ceiling because it held a special place in members’ hearts. Specified in African Ayous on a corrosion-resistant suspension system, the exterior grade multi-faceted ceiling, which was specified with a 19mm gap, was complex in design and installation due to the shape of

the triangular openings that were formed by the roof structure, into which the solid wood ceiling had to be installed. David Harris, General Manager of Hunter Douglas Architectural Products UK, said: “This was another successful swimming pool installation for us and it was great to see how good the eye-catching design looked in its new home,” and added: “Our linear open ceiling is one of the most popular options because it is visually attractive.” As you would expect for a leisure centre environment, the wood panels are finished on all sides with a water-based varnish, and they are impregnated with Magma Firestop, which achieves Class ‘0’ BS476 fire rating. The wood panels also have Hunter Douglas’s standard nonwoven acoustic fleece bonded to the back of them, which closes

off the void visually but still allows sound to be absorbed by the ceiling. Hunter Douglas worked closely with Elmsmere Engineering, a Hinckleybased installation company, to ensure that the ceiling was installed quickly and without complications. Hunter Douglas 01604 648229 www.hunterdouglas.co.uk

Enclosure Is Crowning Glory For Demo Pool There are lots of ways to cover a pool but few can rival the good looks and robustness of the Aquacomet enclosure, which is why when Cambridgeshire retailer Aqualeaf Ltd built a demonstration pool at their premises earlier this summer, they chose Certikin to supply the crowning glory. Based in Ely, Aqualeaf operate nationwide and have in their 40-year history installed swimming pools all over the UK and Europe. “As a successful swimming pool business we require premium quality, reliable products that we can guarantee for our customers,” said Director, Paul Carman. “Certikin is our supplier of choice because it offers excellent products, reliable service and fantastic support. We are delighted with our Aquacomet pool enclosure for our demonstration swimming pool. It has attracted a lot of attention and proved a huge success in helping secure many new customers.” Aesthetically elegant, all Aquacomet enclosures are aluminum in structure with a combination of twin skin and clear polycarbonate walls which are superb at keeping the heat in and the leaves out. Most RAL colours are available, including a unique wood style finish, which allows the

enclosure to blend into its natural environment. The enclosures are suitable for many applications (both commercial and domestic) and not just swimming pools and spas. The range includes fixed models (with opening side windows) and various telescopic options. In fact, every possible permutation is catered for including low level, high level, lean to, fixed and sliding options. Certikin offers a free site survey. Installation is optional to give full peace of mind, or supply only and guidance provided should it be preferred.
