This time last year in the UK, we were suffering a heat wave and record-breaking temperatures. Twelve months on and recordbreaking temperatures are in the news again, only this time they seem to be being experienced everywhere apart from in good old Blighty! Have we even had a summer this year? I’m yet to be convinced, which is a real shame because as we all know, our industry always does better when the sun is out, although perhaps not to the levels of 2022! That said, despite the lack of any prolonged hot spells, many across the industry are reporting being busy still, which is always welcome news. And this is despite some areas having hosepipe bans, inflation running at levels not seen for a generation, the rates of finance have climbed at an alarming rate and families becoming desperate to enjoy some holiday sunshine. My conclusion is that perhaps it’s best to take some of what you see on, or read in, the news with a pinch of salt as thankfully, it never seems to be quite as bad as is being presented!

With more people than ever owning or using pools and spas in the UK, water-based hygiene needs to be at the forefront of people’s minds, so somewhat handily, inside this latest issue, we take a look at some of the current solutions that are keeping the water clean whilst minimising chlorine use. In addition to this, we also take a look at just some of the laboursaving products that are making the testing of water in pools and spas a more simple and accurate task.

We’ve also an in depth look at the latest environmentally friendly heat pumps that are on the market – products that will definitely take the chill out of the water on the overcast

days that we’re all so used to in the UK. With elevated energy costs, they’re a product that will no doubt soar even more in popularity. Coming inside from the cold, dehumidification is also featured as we take a closer look at some of the environmental solutions that are able to provide a breath of fresh air to pool hall and spa spaces.

One sector that has changed a lot over recent years is lighting and we take our annual look at a number of the latest products which are delivering some truly stunning results to wet leisure environments. The appeal of stainless steel is also focused on again as we look at pools, spas and a number of accessories that are utilising the benefits of this timeless and elegant material that is also both remarkably flexible in its use and extremely durable too. 2023 is a milestone year for distributor SCP UK who are celebrating 25 years in business, and we put the spotlight on them, the journey the company has had and its plans for the future. If that wasn’t enough, Paul Webb from Fairlocks Pool Products provides an ‘Opinion’ piece in which he talks about some of the values that have helped him in his career in the industry, plus Luke Griffiths from the STA highlights why pool plant procedures are so important with a case study about a leisure centre that paid a heavy price for not formally implementing any! On the subject of plant rooms, we’ve also a piece about the transformation of one which has given a Welsh swimming pool a brand-new lease of life!

There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA along with all the British entries shortlisted for the 2023 European Pool & Spa Awards hosted by EUSA are also revealed too. The winners will be announced later this year at the aquanale exhibition in Cologne. Finally, we’ve got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and from further afield. So, with a broad mix of subjects covered in this latest issue of SPN, hopefully we’ve provided a bit of something for everyone and I hope you find some time to enjoy it.

Therme Manchester’s New Design Submitted for Approval

Following a public consultation, Therme Manchester, the UK’s first city-based wellbeing resort, has submitted a refined new design for approval to Trafford Council.

The concept for the project has transitioned, from primarily a single building with zones and an undulating roofline, to a flowing pavilionstyle concept. This new design features separate connected structures that are immersed and enveloped in a natural landscape, with a revised location for car parking and enhanced connectivity with public transport.

The public consultation has shown overwhelming support with 91% of the responses towards the new design agreeing that it is even more impressive than the original, with the carbon footprint being one of the most important considerations. Therme Group have given their support for a district heating network that Peel L&P are promoting, to make rapid progress in the transition to low carbon heating.

Therme Manchester has enlisted the services of Fletcher Priest – a London-based architectural and design practice, and one of the largest in the United Kingdom – as Collaborating Architects. They are providing support to Therme ARC, Therme Group’s in-house architecture practice and design

company, with a series of design innovations. Additionally, the group has engaged GROSS. MAX., an Edinburgh-based firm responsible for the landscape design. GROSS.MAX. has also assisted Therme ARC in developing the concept within the broader urban landscape. Therme Group have taken on board the comments from the public consultation and will continue to listen and engage with community groups, in the Therme Manchester

post-planning design work, to ensure the development delivers optimum access to all. Pending planning approval, the £250m construction is set to commence later this year, with an estimated duration of 24 months for completion.

Delivering Quality Floorcare At The UK’s First Passivhaus Leisure Centre

Exeter’s £44m energy-efficient St Sidwell’s Point is the UK’s first Passivhaus leisure centre and has been designed to use up to 70% less energy than a conventional facility. On the wet leisure side, the centre features main and learner swimming pools with moveable floors, a confidence water pool plus a 100-seat spectator area.

“Since opening, footfall through the centre has exceeded all expectations, so keeping the premises clean, particularly as it is so busy, is an ongoing challenge,” said Jonathan Brown, Centre Manager.

“Due to the mixed nature of the site, with so many wet areas, we have the highest anti-slip tiles throughout. The flooring needs to be kept scrupulously clean for the safety of centre users, while also needing to be maintained to look good.

“From day one, we needed the best possible equipment, but the first floor cleaning machines we tried simply were not reliable or robust enough. We were therefore delighted when our janitorial supplies contractor H.D.Adcock Nelson Ltd recommended floorcare machinery from Truvox International.

“At the in-house demonstration we were extremely impressed with the ease-of-use and efficiency of both the Orbital 1500 and the Multiwash™ PRO 340.”

The Orbital 1500 combines orbital and rotary motions into one, providing a constant vibration that increases cleaning efficiency. The roto-orbital movement gives the machine great stability, which enhances the performance compared with a regular single disc machine. It is easy to use and manoeuvre and the low vibration levels provide excellent operator comfort. Meanwhile, the Multiwash™ PRO 340 is a scrubberdryer, which gives excellent scrubbing power and pick up, leaving the floor clean and dry as well as adding a finishing touch to the floors.

“With the two machines from Truvox International we can guarantee perfect cleanliness and hygiene across the flooring throughout the site as they solve all of our complex floorcare issues,” concluded Jonathan.

TURKISH BATHS FEATURE IN ENDANGERED BUILDINGS LIST

The North West’s only historic Turkish baths has featured in the Victorian Society’s ‘Top Ten Endangered Buildings’ list this year.

The Grade II listed Turkish Baths in Cumbria needs local ownership and support to bring it back into community use for another century.

The now dissolved Carlisle City Council voted to close the Baths in 2022. It was one of only 12 historic baths in the UK still operating, nine of which are open to the public.

An active ‘Friends’ group continues to fight to save the Baths and in June, a spokesperson for the facility’s new owners advised:

“Cumberland Council recognises the historic significance of the Turkish Baths building in Carlisle and its listed status. We remain committed to finding a viable solution that will not only protect the building, but also provide it with a sustainable future.”

ISPE UPLOADS WORKSHOP VIDEOS

Sixteen ISPE workshop presentations from SPATEX 2023 are now available to view, free of charge, on the ISPE website. These add to the previously released presentations from the ‘Virtual SPATEX’ event from 2021, and are a great source of information.

SEVEN YORKSHIRE POOLS AT RISK OF CLOSURE

Seven swimming pools in West Yorkshire are at risk of closure due to essential work being needed according to Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL) who run them on behalf of Kirklees Council.

The council’s current budget includes £6.1m for KAL, but this figure is expected to decrease drastically over the coming years with a maximum of £2.55m earmarked next year meaning the pools are all at risk.

A Swimming Pool Fit For King’s

Sitting on an 80-acre campus in the Cheshire heartland of Macclesfield, King’s School is renowned nationally for its excellence in sport. When the governors of King’s made the decision to upgrade their sports facilities with a new 25m x 13m (1-2m depth) swimming pool for training, competitions and galas, Warwickshire-based Buckingham Pools quickly rose to the surface as its builder of choice. In turn, Buckingham chose its tried and trusted supplier, Certikin, to provide much of the pool’s equipment.

Taking some eight months to design and build, the six-lane indoor pool is the jewel in the crown for a school that has in recent years produced pupils that have represented their country or been national champions in 22 different sports.

Certikin supplied the complete filtration system – two SLX filters and three circulation pumps providing a turnover of less than three hours to optimise the usability. Alongside the pumps, Certikin provided three inverters to make them variable speed. Easy to install and programme, these inverters offer a potential cost saving payback of less than six months.

Finishing off the swimming pool are Certikin’s gleaming stainless steel Gibraltar Rails ladders which come with anti-slip treads as standard.

Buckingham Pools offered a comprehensive QA package alongside its robust design and build methodology to ensure longevity and long-term assurance. Taking full responsibility for building the shell with shotcrete methodology resulted in exacting tolerances required over and above traditional concrete construction methods to ensure the pool complies with all the necessary standards.

MEDIEVAL REMAINS DISCOVERED AT POOL BUILD SITE

The discovery of extensive medieval remains at the swimming pool site at Abbey Fields has sparked intense local interest.

Archaeological findings on the site made by AR Demolition and Archaeology Warwickshire ahead of the redevelopment of Kenilworth’s swimming facilities by Warwick District Council and Kier Construction are of such a scale and quality, they have surprised everyone.

The Council’s Project Team is now working in partnership with Historic England to determine how best to preserve and record what has been found and the implications this could have on the design of the new building.

In the meantime, the Council is working closely with its contractor Kier to review the impact that these historic findings will have on the timeline for the building works.

Councillor Chris King commented: “Throughout this project we’ve been mindful of the historic significance of Abbey Fields and the need to carefully balance the future needs of our local community, whilst ensuring that the integrity of the scheduled monument is retained. Our position on this hasn’t changed and in the coming weeks we will work with our contractual partners and Historic England to reach the best possible outcome.”

PEATY’S CHILDHOOD POOL COULD BE DEMOLISHED

A former Derby leisure centre where Olympian Adam Peaty trained could be demolished. Having operated for 90 years, Queen’s Leisure Centre was popular with residents but has stood empty since May 2022, closing prior to the opening of the city’s £42m Moorways Sports Village complex. The council said all options remained open but it was exploring the “regeneration potential” of this part of the city.

Luxury Cornish Hotel Welcomes Modular Outdoor Pool From Myrtha

Strengthening credentials in the luxury hotel market, modular pool provider Myrtha Pools has completed the installation of a new outdoor heated pool in Cornwall.

Fowey Hall, part of the Luxury Family Hotels collection, will now benefit from a 18 x 8m pool this summer, which has been engineered and crafted with Myrtha Pools stainless steel technology.

A vanishing edge filtration system has been added to improve water circulation and quality, with a grey tiled finish enhancing the pool aesthetic.

The new pool forms part of a multi-million-pound refurbishment at Fowey Hall – a Grade II listed establishment – with substantial upgrades having been completed in May.

The pool itself boasts stunning sea views, making Fowey Hall one of the very few luxury hotels on the south Cornish coast to offer this facility.

Kevin Burns, UK Business Development Manager at Myrtha Pools said: “This is a stunning hotel, that is well-respected in the luxury market.

“The solution we’ve provided has been expertly

designed, with ease of care, maintenance and speed of installation all in mind. On top of this, it blends in seamlessly with the stunning views this establishment provides over the great Cornish coastline.

“The world’s leading hotels come to us because they know we can deliver efficient, flexible and smart solutions, that are futureproof for years to come. We’re pleased to consider Fowey Hall among this esteemed list and look forward to seeing the pool in action this summer.”

The new Myrtha Pools solution, which has been designed to LEED, BREEAM and Green Star standards, will provide Fowey Hall with a host of benefits, with the firm’s modular technology offering a 45% smaller carbon footprint than traditional methods of construction – which use tile and concrete – and cost savings of up to 20%.

Companies Rush To Book Space At SPATEX 2024

Following a successful 2023 show, SPATEX, the UK’s only dedicated water leisure exhibition, has witnessed a stampede from companies wishing to book space at next year’s event!

Returning to the centrally located Coventry Building Society Arena from Tuesday 6 to Thursday 8 February, by the end of June, SPATEX had already received over 75 confirmed bookings for exhibition space, with many other companies poised to confirm attendance.

SPATEX’s delighted organiser, Michele Bridle, said: “It is really gratifying to see how many companies wish to replicate the success of this year’s show. It’s the one and only time in the calendar when the industry can come together for three days only, showcase their latest innovations, network, and do business.

SPATEX has the feel of an exclusive club that everyone in the industry wants to be a part of. My advice is contact us now to avoid disappointment.

“So, what can you expect? There will be

new products, new exhibitors, new events, new entertainment, new seminars and new workshops to look forward to. All sectors will, of course, be well represented but wellness and, in particular, saunas and steam rooms, look like having a strong presence.”

Display swimmers will once again be one of the 2024 highlights after a large swim spa proved a major visitor attraction at this year’s show. A synchronised swimmer, a rower and a counter-current swimmer were put through their paces for the launch of the Swimming Teachers’ Association ‘Swim to the Beat’ campaign which raised valuable funds throughout February for the

Michele added: “As the first international pool and spa exhibition in any calendar year, SPATEX is your window on all of the latest water leisure developments happening around the world.”

Certikin’s Training Days Are On A Roll!

It was a full house at Certikin’s in-house teaching facility, The Academy, when it held two Roldeck technical training days as part of the company’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training recently.

Biocidal Product Regulations And The Impact On Electrochlorination

Since the UK left the European Union many businesses have had to navigate through complex obstacles and hurdles, including changes to regulations.

Many regulatory bodies are controlled by the EU, meaning the UK had to adapt to new regulations and standardise their own businesses, which caused a ripple of confusion for many industries and sectors –including water disinfection.

Biocidal Product Regulations, like many regulations, fell under EU control, meaning a new regulatory system within the UK had to take charge of the marketplace surrounding biocides and chemical regulations.

When it comes to the swimming pool industry, frequently utilised biocides include chlorine and sodium hypochlorite, disinfectants used to create clean, safe water for swimming pools.

Biocides can be used in the workplace or the home, so it is important that these products can be used without causing harm to people, the environment or wildlife. This is where regulatory bodies come in.

Within the EU, the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR, Regulation (EU) 528/2012) concerns the placing on the market and use of biocidal products and active substances contained within them. This regulation aims to improve

the functioning of the biocidal products market in the EU, whilst ensuring a high level of protection for humans and the environment.

Following Brexit, the EU BPR 528/2012 has been implemented in the UK as the GB BPR. This means that the regulations now have to be implemented by a UK based organisation – in this case the HSE (Health & Safety Executive).

The HSE recently released an update on ‘active chlorine generated from sodium chloride by electrolysis’ stating that this active substance has been successfully notified into the GB Review Programme – confirming Hyprolyser® electrochlorination systems from Gaffey Technical Services Ltd have the green light for business as usual, with Gaffey closely monitoring BPR, to ensure ongoing regulatory compliance.

Despite recent rumours casting some confusion and doubt on electrochlorination and regulations in the UK, Hyprolyser® is safe and compliant under the rules of GB BPR –providing a reliable, sustainable, costeffective and efficient method of water disinfection within the swimming pool industry and beyond.

“The Academy is located in Certikin’s state-of-theart warehouse, factory and office development that we moved into at the end of 2021,” explained Marketing Manager, Chris Green. “It offers a comfortable, spacious teaching room for our specialist staff and suppliers to welcome and host training days for our customers.”

Delegates at the two fully booked Roldeck training days were treated to a busy programme that encapsulated everything you could wish to know about one of the country’s leading automatic covers. Topics included ordering requirements; cover and in-roller installation options; control panel programming; using the S-Switch and servicing and maintenance. The day finished with an overview of Roldeck’s older motors and panels.

“Customers report that these training days are invaluable in increasing product knowledge and offering the opportunity for unpressurised face-to-face contact with Certikin sales and technical staff,” said Chris. “We are planning to host several more in-house training sessions during the course of the year. This is, after all, a building built with our customers very much in mind and we want them to reap all its benefits too.”

Rising Star Named As New Golden Coast Sales Manager

Luke Honnoraty, one of the most experienced sales specialists at wet leisure distributor Golden Coast, has now stepped into the role of Sales Manager.

Luke follows in the footsteps of Adam Clark, who is now leading Golden Coast as General Manager, and will assume responsibility for the Technical Sales team in day-to-day operations.

“Adam has left big shoes to fill,” said Luke. “He was a great team leader and I’m proud to follow in his footsteps. He created a really strong foundation and I intend to build on that. Having worked for Golden Coast for ten years I have forged strong relationships with all the team members and will continue to ensure they have everything they need to succeed, with an emphasis on technical training.”

Speaking about his existing customers, Luke advised: “I will always be on hand for customers, and in that regard, it will be business as usual. In fact, I’ll be out on the road over the coming weeks visiting customers and making sure their needs are being fully met and that they are aware of our expanded product range.”

STA Becomes A PWTAG Approved Training Organisation

The STA is pleased to confirm its status as a Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) Approved Training Organisation.

This follows an application to PWTAG about a new unregulated pool plant course; the STA International Swimming Pool Technical Operator (SPTO). This unregulated course trains learners in swimming pool technical operations and like STA’s regulated pool plant qualifications follows PWTAG guidance. The course is aimed at people who operate a swimming pool plant and are responsible for a swimming pool’s technical operations.

Luke is already known to many customers as the Golden Coast expert on pool covers, but his technical knowledge spans the entire catalogue, standing him in good stead when it comes to helping identify and deliver the right solutions for each individual need.

“I’m really enjoying my new role which comes at a particularly busy time for Golden Coast, where we are seeing increased requirement for high-quality, high-performance products,” added Luke. “The great news is that the merger with Pollet Pool Group means we have an even bigger product catalogue than ever before, so are ideally placed to satisfy that demand.”

Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

Luke Griffiths, STA’s Technical Qualification and Business Development Manager said: ‘‘We are pleased to add the SPTO course to our portfolio of pool plant training, and delighted to formalise our workings with PWTAG as an Approved Training Organisation.

“STA’s unregulated courses are aimed at training staff in a specific area like SPTO, and who do not need to go through a regulated programme. This is often the case with countries outside the UK that do not require UK-regulated qualifications, especially when there are no country-specific entry requirements. This makes SPTO ideal for international learners, although not limited to international learners, because we’ve ensured a high standard of quality training can be delivered in line with PWTAG guidance but without all the regulatory requirements. This makes the SPTO course more flexible, accessible and cost-effective,” confirmed Luke.

To support the course delivery, STA has developed a new SPTO resource manual with a PowerPoint Presentation and assessment materials.

PWTAG Announces New Chair And Vice Chair

PWTAG (the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group) has a new Chair and Vice Chair.

After many years of dedicated service, Janice Calvert and Ralph Riley thought the time had come to step down from these respective positions and members would like to take this opportunity to thank them both for everything they have done for PWTAG over the past 20 plus years.

They have moved the organisation forward tremendously into a position where it is one of the most respected advisory groups to the leisure industry anywhere in the world.

They are not leaving PWTAG completely and will remain directors and council members, so the organisation will continue to use their extensive knowledge to offer advice and guidance.

At the recent AGM, Colin Day was voted in and welcomed as the new Chair with Ian Ogilvie accepting the position of Vice Chair.

Colin is well known in the leisure industry having worked for Lovibond Tintometer for the past 17 years and is also a past President of ISPE, whom he represents on the PWTAG Council.

Ian has been working in leisure for the past 30 years and has experience in the hotel industry, waterparks and competition pools. Swim By Day, Dance By Night With Albixon’s BERGEN

Reduce Operator Interaction With Certikin’s Hypo-Gen Electro Chlorinator

The process of electrochlorination is often used in large-scale water treatment applications – now it is available for small applications too, courtesy of Certikin.

Electrochlorination is an efficient and cost-effective way to produce chlorine using salt as a base product, reducing end-user chemical handling.

The process uses electricity to produce chlorine gas which is a powerful disinfectant. This involves passing an electric current through a brine solution which breaks down the salt molecules and releases chlorine gas. This gas is used and becomes an aqueous solution – sodium hypochlorite.

Albixon’s BERGEN covers in-ground pools, home spas, or swimming ponds, and also functions as a terrace laid directly over the water which can be walked upon. It not only protects the water from being contaminated with impurities and provides safety for children or pets, but with specially developed aluminium profiles with high rigidity and a load capacity of 250 kg/m2, it creates a compact surface that can serve as a relaxation area, a children’s playground, or perhaps a backdrop for barbecuing or socialising with friends... the possibilities are limitless.

BERGEN stands out especially for its stability, safety, and sleek design. The unique system of attaching terrace boards creates a seamless surface without gaps, preventing valuables or dirt from falling into the pool. The installation is easy and fast, with patented attachments that work without screws. Customers can choose from six natural colours and for even greater convenience, the terrace can be used in combination with the automatic MOOVER electric drive with solar charging. This ensures comfortable remote uncovering and covering of the pool without the need to bend over and manually manipulate the cover. The device is powered by batteries, which can be charged with solar energy or, if necessary, from the grid. The MOOVER doesn’t forget about the aesthetic side either. It recently won the international Red Dot Award 2023 for product design. The system is universal and can be installed on most types of rail pool enclosures.

The benefits of the Hypo-Gen system include:

• Fully automated on site production – including softener regeneration

• Reduced operator interaction – simply add salt

• Fully animated HMI – entire process mapped out on a single screen

• Robust airflow management with safety interlocks and gas sensor

• Brine solution strength monitoring ensures optimum performance.

Added to these, salt is safe and freely available, plus it is environmentally friendly, nontoxic and there’s little in the way of storage restrictions too. For additional peace of mind, the system also carries a 5-year warranty.

Electrochlorination can be used in pools and spas, both domestically and commercially and on multiple applications on a single site.

A Non-toxic, 100% Pet Safe Outdoor Cleaner With No Harsh Chemicals

Safewash is an outdoor cleaner, for use on all types of outdoor surfaces including patios, decking, paving, conservatories, windowsills, paths, roofs and awnings.

Completely biodegradable, it effectively prolongs the life of many surfaces, timbers and tiles and is non-hazardous, non-corrosive and 100% environmentally safe.

The product is perfect for homeowners looking to transform their outdoor areas in time for a late surge of summer sun, and to prevent algae and moss growing throughout the warmer months.

Many homeowners turn to bleach when cleaning outdoor patios, but founder of Safewash, Matt Postelthwaite says this can cause damage in the long-run: “Safewash is 100% bleach-free, noncaustic and biocide-free.

“Many of the traditional outdoor cleaners that people tend to use are full of harmful chemicals that can not only damage our surfaces, but can also

be poisonous to outdoor animals and pets.  “We created Safewash to be 100% safe for the environment and completely biodegradable over time, ensuring it leaves no trace in the environment.”

Application of Safewash couldn’t be easier too, simply dilute and spray on and results will be seen in as little as 24 hours.

The product is sold for both residential and commercial use and is available in both 1litre and 5litre super concentrate options.

Reviewers have hailed the product as ‘easy to use’ and ‘perfect for pets’, with one saying: “Neighbourhood pets regularly visit our garden, and the odd fox now and again, so I wanted to try a cleaner that I can use without worry of harm.”

Marquis Announce Production Move To Nevada

Superior Wellness Listed As One Of UK’s Fastest Growing Businesses

Chesterfield-based Superior Wellness has ranked 30th on the FEBE (For Entrepreneurs by Entrepreneurs) Growth 100: an annual list that reveals the UK’s fastest-growing privately owned businesses in the country where the founder or founders are still actively involved.

Businesses must have sales between £3m and £200m, been trading for at least three years and have turned an operating profit in the latest financial year to make it into the top 100.

The Growth 100 celebrates British business at its best –highlighting founders that are driving their companies to deliver significant sales, revenue and profit, against a backdrop of unprecedented economic challenges.

US spa brand Marquis announced recently that it would be moving the manufacturing of its acrylic hot tubs and swim spas from Independence, Oregon to Las Vegas, Nevada where it will now share the manufacturing space currently occupied by Artesian Spas. Both brands were purchased by private equity firm Monomoy Capital in 2021 with Monomoy further expanding its presence in the sector with the acquisition of Nordic Hot Tubs in 2022. In the same year, Rick Gallagher assumed the position of CEO at Marquis Hot Tubs.

This latest move marks a significant transition in history of the Marquis brand which can trace its roots back to 1980, however Gallagher advised that

the company is committed to keeping the two brands separate and unique and that the move meant shipping and transportation will be much more cost-efficient.

In a formal notification submitted to the state, the company advised that it will be laying off its workforce of 115 employees at the manufacturing plant. Marquis’ marketing, accounting, product design teams and most administrative staff will remain in Oregon though.

The transition started in August and is due to be completed at the beginning of September.

NEXTPOOL GROUP ACQUIRES FRANCE’S AVADY POOL

The NextPool brand has recently strengthened its position in water treatment solutions for swimming pools by acquiring Avady Pool, the French family company specialising in the design, manufacture and marketing of dosing and water treatment control devices for private and public swimming pools.

Avady’s customers are mainly professional distributors, swimming pool manufacturers, store networks or independent swimming pool specialists, both in France and overseas, supplied through a historical partnership with distributor SCP Europe.

A Pearl Of White Tile At Dubai Private Pool

Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates known for its high-end commerce, ultra-modern architecture and lively nightlife. The standard of living is extraordinary –which explains the number of architecturally designed luxury homes boasting world-class amenities. A perfect example is this elegant private villa with its swimming pool tiled by Ezarri in white glass mosaic.

The pool features an unusually elegant design. Ezarri used Perla tiles from its Iridescent Collection to achieve the amazing idyllic blue. The iridescent effect of the white mosaic tile lends a sense of relaxation and wellbeing. A true treat for the senses. White tile with water produces a sky-blue effect in perfect harmony with the waters of the Persian Gulf.

In this private premises in Dubai, the effect is stunning. The blue contrasts with the ´camel´ tones of the façade and walls, with the metallic sheen of the urban architecture, and with the copper, ochre and yellow of the sands in the desert nearby.

Green also makes an appearance to achieve the blue tones of the Ezarri-tiled pool, creating a symphony of colours to offset the high temperatures in the UAE.

The swimming pool at this fantastic villa is specially designed to provide a sense of cooling comfort. Indeed, the pool has its own waterfall on one side, and semi-submerged sun loungers and spa on the other. But perhaps the most interesting detail is that part of the terrace sits at the same level as the pool floor. The part of the pool that connects to the tiered terrace is made of transparent methacrylate, providing views from inside the pool. All this creates a wonderfully refreshing underwater sensation.

Organisers Advise A Positive Outlook For aquanale 2023

EPA Recognises Hayward’s Full Suite Of Variable Speed Pumps

When aquanale returns from 24 to 27 October 2023 in Cologne, it will once again be the epicentre of the international swimming pool and wellness world. The event, which will be held in parallel with FSB – International Trade Fair for Public Space, Sports and Leisure Facilities – will focus on innovative technologies and new products from the pool, sauna, spa and wellness sectors. An online press briefing on 28 June offered a look ahead to the upcoming edition. Matthias Pollmann, Vice President Trade Fair Management at Koelnmesse, Ute Wanschura, Managing Director of the German Federal Association for Swimming Pools and Wellness (bsw), aquanale’s conceptual partner, and Anneli Wilska from the Sauna from Finland initiative, which has entered into a strategic partnership with aquanale this year, discussed the latest issues, trends and challenges affecting the industry and highlighted aquanale’s role as the

primary industry gathering in this context. aquanale 2023 is due to open in just over two months time and preparations are in full swing. Matthias Pollmann reported at the end of June that the response from exhibitors has been extremely encouraging: “We expect aquanale to be very successful and to follow on seamlessly from the strong events that have gone before. More than 90% of the space is already booked up, with 280 exhibitors from 30 countries covering almost all aspects of the industry. It’s a clear sign that the event is a vital business platform for the sector.

“We’ve set a target to attract 25,000 visitors from Germany and around the globe to the aquanale/FSB trade fair duo.”

Fluidra Increased RD&I Spend By 37% In 2022

Last year, Fluidra increased its RD&I (Research, Development and Innovation) spend to €53m, the highest figure in its history. This amount has more than doubled the €25m invested in this field in 2019, the first full year following its merger with Zodiac.

The company’s increased spending in this area over the past few years has been reflected in the business’ vitality index, which measures the proportion of sales of products launched over the past five years. In 2022, this index stood at 19.7%, which translates as €471m, 53% up on 2021.

In the framework of its strategy, Fluidra is working to centralise R&D in a network of four of its centres to gain an overview of

solution-oriented pools, rather than having separate product categories. Meaning, in addition to teams that work on innovation, these facilities will take in other relevant areas for the innovation and development of products, such as management teams, product conformity, intellectual property, open innovation, sustainable products and IoT, amongst others.

“RD&I is a core part of our DNA. We are well aware that success in the pool market depends on equipment that, on the one hand, is easy to use, install and maintain and, on the other, sustainable and reliable. We therefore focus on delivering the best solutions adapted to the needs of our customers,” explained Martí Giralt, EMEA Manufacturing General Manager (FMD) from Fluidra.

In 2022, the company completed the construction of its latest centre at Polinyà in Spain, with the aim of centralising work in the EMEA region in order to gain in efficiency and focus. It is anticipated that the centre’s R&D laboratory will open this year equipped with test pools to try out the products that are designed.

In June, manufacturer Hayward announced that all their fullfeatured variable speed pumps are now ENERGY

STAR certified. The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR certification recognises energy efficient, high-performance products compliant with the latest Department of Energy (DOE) energy efficiency standards.

US pool owners with any of these variable-speed pumps are now eligible for local utility rebates through ENERGY STAR’s rebate programme.

Hayward’s full suite of variable-speed pumps includes four models: TriStar XL, TriStar 950/900, MaxFlo VS 500 and now Super Pump VS 700. Users can programme their pumps to optimise energy efficiency without compromising performance. Quieter operation, better filtration and lower hydraulic stress on other pool pad products are a plus while dynamic control of pump speed in harmony with water features can produce dramatic effects adding to the ambiance of the pool and garden living space.

“I am incredibly proud of Hayward’s engineers, designers and product managers for achieving ENERGY STAR compliance for our entire suite of fullfeatured variable-speed pumps,” said Kevin Holleran, Hayward’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “The investment in design to increase efficiency without sacrificing performance demonstrates why we continue to be the number one rated products brand amongst US pool professionals.”

Hayward’s pool equipment portfolio contains the broadest range of ENERGY STAR certified pool pumps, including their industry-leading line of ultra-high efficiency pumps. Omni® SmartPad™ pool and spa automation products – which allows pool owners to set schedules and adjust their pool equipment remotely via their smart device – provide another energy saving option. Hayward’s energy efficient products have delivered 2.4BN kWh savings over the last three years.

WORLD NEWS 28 August 2023 SPN www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk

We have finally had some good, or at least better weather over the past few months, and as would be expected, this boosted consumer demand for our products and services. While we can prepare for good and bad weather, customers will always judge when they want to open their pools and use their hot tubs based on the temperature and whether the sun is shining!

The downside to the improved weather has been that some water companies have either issued or retained ‘temporary use bans’ (hosepipe bans) for domestic customers in various areas. When writing this piece, South West Water customers in Cornwall and Devon are affected, as are South East customers in some parts of Sussex and Kent. There is dialogue involving the BSPF, Water UK, UKWIR and the water companies to try and ensure businesses are not unduly impacted. A series of questions have been sent to the relevant bodies to seek definitive answers regarding servicing and filling newly purchased hot tubs, for instance. There is information on our websites, and members can access a factsheet.

Equity (or Equality), Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is a vital subject; not only are there legal responsibilities to protect specific characteristics, such as age, disability, race, etc., but when mishandled, there can be catastrophic reputational damage

Education, Excellence And Industry Initiatives

In this summer issue of SPN, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes touches on some of the initiatives being worked on by the industry’s associations, including awards to celebrate excellence from the membership

for an organisation – ask the Metropolitan Police, or the England and Wales Cricket Board! The plan within our industry is to raise awareness of EDI to show how this can improve a company’s performance and ensure a positive reputation. Discussions have begun about forming a Task Group to detail how to maximise the awareness of EDI and so watch out for news on this page in future issues as we look to engage with members to have a greater representation of the whole workforce.

On a different subject, it is that time of year when SPATA and BISHTA members can enter the 2024 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards. SPATA and (now also) BISHTA will require members not only to demonstrate technical and aesthetic expertise but also to show the importance of good administration, and that includes training. To assist members in entering the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, there are webinar video recordings available to watch on the SPATA and BISHTA websites, in the Trade section, and on the awards page, which provide all the information required for entry, including details of the marking system and maximising your entries. Please get as many great images of your projects as possible while the weather is still good! The deadline for entries to be received into the SPATA / BISHTA office is Friday 27 October 2023.

Congratulations to all of the SPATA and BISHTA members who have previously won a British Pool & Hot Tub Award, as many of them have now been shortlisted for the 2023 EUSA European Pool & Spa Awards. See all the entries starting from page 33 in this issue.

The annual Information and Networking Days are planned to go ahead in September in Andover (and online), and more details on the topics and speakers are provided on the

following page.

SPATA continue to offer industry qualifications / courses. Get your name on the waiting list for any or all of the SPATA courses; Liners, Heat Pumps, plus Environmental Control & Ductwork. The STA are hosting a fasttrack Pool Plant Operations (PPO) qualification on Tuesday 7 November, and this qualification can be used as evidence for obtaining a blue swimming pool installer CSCS card.

SPATA has been working with The Tile Association (TTA) to revise their guidance on swimming pool tiling and the wider design guidance for swimming pools. The document is due to be published very soon, and TTA is offering training on the new document via a ‘master class’ that anyone can attend. TTA members can attend for £50 per person, SPATA members for £100 per person, and non-members can attend for £150 per person.

BISHTA will continue to offer a range of courses on Water Hygiene Management, Dangerous Goods and Safe Hot Tub Handling. Qualifications are also available for Electrical Final Connections of Hot Tubs (with NICEIC) and the Certified Hot Tub Technician (CHTT). Contact the BISHTA office to see what courses are running or to get on a waiting list.

Providing A Platform To Stay Ahead Of The Game

The role of SPATA and BISHTA is to help members understand what they need to do to meet industry standards and abide by the Code of Ethics. The role is also to help members to be able to focus on managing their day-today business arrangements when there are so many potential distractions that can get in the way! The strength of the trade associations means that the industry has many more opportunities to dialogue with national and local governments, trade bodies, other wet leisure organisations and other industries.

In developments over the last few years, both trade associations have worked to bring digital opportunities into play, with many more online meetings and training webinars available. The respective online Member Hubs host SPATA and BISHTA Standards, supplements and essential documents, members’ factsheets, a complete list of members’ benefits, training opportunities, marketing and PR support materials, and so much more. Giving members 24-7 access from any digital device whilst in the office, on site or on the go!

Having existed for over 60 years, SPATA (and its forerunner – the Association of Swimming Pool Contractors) has not only been working on behalf of the pool industry and setting standards but giving help to consumers too. Similarly, BISHTA has been operating for over 20 years in the hot tub industry, working with public health agencies, the Health & Safety Executive, Trading Standards, Environmental Health Officers, The IET, and a range of other key bodies.

The Best Of British, Showcased In Europe

In this feature, we reveal the British entries shortlisted for EUSA’s 2023

European Pool & Spa Awards, the winners of which will be announced later this year at the biennial aquanale exhibition, taking place in Cologne, Germany

Hosted by the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA), the annual European Pool & Spa Awards celebrate the most outstanding domestic pools, spas and hot tubs in the wet leisure industry, with award winners from across Europe competing for the highest accolades. The 2023 event is the eleventh European Awards hosted by EUSA, with the award

winners’ presentation this year taking place on 24 October at aquanale in Cologne.

The Awards are open to all National Associations (with EUSA membership) to submit entries on behalf of their respective member companies, with judges assessing each entry’s visual impact, innovation and aesthetic appeal.

SPATA and BISHTA have submitted the UK entries from the winners of the British

Pool & Hot Tub Awards. These submissions alone provide each company shortlisted with some exceptional PR opportunities. These are outstanding accomplishments and an endorsement to celebrate, which can provide much stronger positioning against competitors, more credibility and increased turnover opportunities – as many SPATA and BISHTA award winners have experienced over the past decade.

Pool Plant Smoke Without Fire… And An Expensive Lesson Learnt!

In this issue, Luke Griffiths, STA’s Technical Qualifications and Business Development Manager, highlights how a pool plant room incident at a leisure centre proved costly due to a lack of procedures and knowledge at the facility

At a leisure centre, which will remain nameless, a fun session was taking place when the fire alarms sounded. The team evacuated the building and dealt with the emergency. The fire zone call point which was triggered was located in the flume pool plant room. Staff Investigated and found a flume pump had burnt out and was smoking. Luckily there was no fire, just a burnt-out pump which had created smoke and triggered the alarm.

Lucky escape, if the smoke had not been detected when it was, it could have been a disaster. The pool manager assumed it was wear and tear on the pumps as they were old. The manager called out a pool contractor to service the pumps and make the repairs.

When the contractor was on site they noticed that the pipework leading to the pumps came from a void under the pool and was confused why there didn’t appear to be any pre-pump strainers. When they investigated further they discovered that the void under the pool was actually a room that the pipework travelled through and the strainer baskets were located on this section of pipework.

The pump failure was caused by the strainer baskets being blocked, resulting in an increased pressure to the pumps, where they eventually ran dry, burnt out and imploded.

WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?

Over several years the pools had a manager who looked after the plant room. The plant room was his pride and joy and he did all the maintenance on his own without any set plans, procedures or maintenance regimes – he just knew it inside out, did everything on his own and the pools ran like clockwork.

When this manager left the company there was no handover, no pool plant induction and no information passed over to the new manager. It also took some time to recruit (common in leisure at the moment). As well as this the new manager had no pool plant qualifications and didn’t even know what a pre-pump strainer basket was.

Further investigations found that for over a year the strainer baskets to the flume pumps had never been cleaned because the new manager didn’t know this room existed.

Due to this multitude of errors, it resulted in over £30,000 in costs for labour, new pumps, strainer baskets and pipework, this excluded the loss of income from the flumes being closed during the works. The facility had to wait 16 weeks for the pumps to be in stock and the contractors to be available to complete the works.

LESSONS LEARNT FROM THIS NEAR MISS?

The pools senior management had no involvement in the pool plant operations for this facility. It was never any problem to them because the manager in place did everything and it was always kept open. It only became a problem when it had to close and the subsequent costs for it to be resolved. More attention needed to be paid to pool plant operations.

There was no documented Pool Technical Operation Procedures (PTOP) detailing the swimming pool’s technical operation,

specifically around pool plant operations and procedures to ensure optimum water quality. Nor was there a planned preventative maintenance schedule or record.

The new manager was not a qualified pool plant operator and hadn’t completed a site-specific induction in plant operations. Had there been an opportunity for a handover period as part of an induction process, or if there were adequate trained pool plant operators to provide cover for the necessary maintenance tasks in the event of someone being on leave (or in this case having left the organisation) maintenance tasks like the one missed could have been picked up. The previous manager doing all the maintenance on his own and lack of procedures was a big contributing factor.

This is a unique situation, and hindsight is always a wonderful thing, but the positive news from this story is that the facilities whole pool plant procedures have changed as a result and they are now operating to the highest standards having learnt this lesson.

For the purpose of this article, it exemplifies that having more qualified, knowledgeable, experienced and competent pool plant operators on site, the safer, more effective and efficient pools can operate. To help leisure operators attract and recruit professionally trained pool plant operators, STA has created a new Pool Plant Operator Career Guide and launched a free new job advertising board at www.jobsinleisure.org

A Bright Future For Welsh Pool

With key pieces of plant room equipment being supplied by Golden Coast, in this latest issue, we look at a plant room transformation which has given the local swimming pool in the Welsh town of Aberaeron a brand-new lease of life!

Acommunity pool in Aberaeron is looking forward to welcoming visitors for many years to come after its plant room recently underwent a dramatic refit in record time.

After receiving a £200,000 grant, the plant room was deemed the main priority for the pool, as the outdated equipment was becoming increasingly difficult to manage.

Aberaeron Pool Manager Martine Branford explained: “Our pool is relied upon by our community and is visited frequently whether it’s for fitness, fun or swimming lessons. Dozens of primary and secondary schools in the area use it. But the plant room was so old that the issues were becoming relentless. There was always something to fix. When we received the grant, we knew we had to take the opportunity to create a plant room with equipment we could depend on to give us clean, safe water.”

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

Swimming pool specialists Pool Tech Services were called in to take a look and make recommendations for a suite of new equipment. The team worked alongside local heating engineers to strip the plant room in its entirety and install new pipework and equipment over the course of just a few days.

Pool Tech Services provided its automatic pro-sense dosing system, with several other key pieces of kit being supplied by leading wet leisure distributor Golden Coast.

“The bespoke Calplas filters were made in Spain within a very short space of time and shipped to the Golden Coast premises in Barnstaple, who delivered them safely to our site,” explained Danny Grant, Managing Director of Pool Tech Services. “It was a minor miracle of international logistics, and we were grateful for how quickly they were able to get them to us. It was no mean feat. As a result, we were able to get the best parts from around the world and put them together

to create a balanced system.

“The biggest challenge was getting the giant Calplas filters in. They were barely able to fit through the door and once they were in they pretty much filled the plant room. Not that I ever doubted my measurements!”

The Calplas filters feature top diffusers and internal piping to deliver optimum filtration, backwash and water flow. Because the Calplas filters are made of glass-reinforced polyester, they remain completely robust, watertight and resistant to corrosion. In addition, a sight glass and access hatch allow for easier maintenance.

Whereas the pool’s old filters used sand, the new Calplas filters use state-of-the-art AFM (Activated Filter Media). Manufactured from processed glass, AFM is self-sterilising and expands its surface area by 300% for maximum filtration. The unique three-stage treatment of the AFM media prevents bacterial growth in the media bed and the short, fast backwash reduces water, chemical and energy consumption.

But to gain maximum benefit from the new filters, good pumps were required. Gone are the old ones, and in their place came new Speck Resort pumps to support better water circulation through the filters.

“The pool now has supercharged filtration that works like a dream,” beamed Danny. “We sorted all the hydraulic issues and it now has outstanding flow rates that deliver clearer, cleaner pool water. The automatic dosing system ensures accurate chemical usage and the system takes all essential water readings that dictate how the pool

is treated and heated. It works together seamlessly to save on energy without compromising on water quality.”

For Pool Manager Martine, the new equipment enables easier, stress-free day-today operation, with the resulting plant room far exceeding expectation.

“All our customers are commenting on how clear the water is,” said Martine. “The new kit is a joy to operate and it’s so easy to use that I can train other staff on it, and finally go on holiday without worrying! Maintenance and operation are much more efficient and effective, which has freed up more of my time to run the pool. Plus, we will save money and energy otherwise spent on chemicals and water usage.

“But the plant room is just the first stage in our plan to invest even more in our pool. The next step is to re-tile some areas and upgrade the changing rooms. This renovation project has given us a boost to do more for a facility that really is the heart of our community. The pool is almost 50 years old, and now we can enter the next 50 years confident that we have everything we need. To be honest, I think we might have the best plant room in Wales.”

Solutions To Minimise Chlorine Use In Water

After years of feedback from pool and spa owners, operators and users, across both domestic and commercial wet leisure environments, the industry’s manufacturers have been tasked to come up with safe, effective and dependable water disinfection solutions that don’t rely solely on large doses of chlorine. As a result of this increasing need, there is now a wide range of treatments, and in particular, systems that are on the market which do exactly that.

Lowering chlorine use in wet leisure settings, and in some cases, removing it completely, has been a priority for many within both private and public settings and it provides a welcome answer for indoor pools to help eradicate the unwelcome odours we all too often associate with water that’s been treated with the chemical. That’s not to say chlorine no longer has a role – far from it. Chlorine will always have its place in the sanitation of pools and spas, but reducing its use provides some highly appreciated, additional benefits, meaning many pools across the UK have already, or are in the process of, adopting or at least looking at alternative approaches to water sanitisation. With numerous solutions and systems on offer, we take a look at just some of the options that are available.

DISCOVER A NEW GENERATION SALT CHLORINATOR WITH SALT & SWIM® 2.0

Available through SCP UK, Salt & Swim®

2.0 is a new generation salt chlorinator from Hayward and offers pool owners precise and user-friendly controls thanks to the product’s LED display. In addition, a transparent cell allows for visual checks on production and a gas detector is included as standard. Salt & Swim® 2.0 gives a visual indicator and changes colour depending on the control selection made – in particular for chlorine production – regardless of whether a pool has an open or closed pool cover and will then adjust production accordingly.

Available in options which cover a wide range of chlorine production (8, 16, 22, 33 g/h/cl), five levels of chlorine production are possible: 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100%.

A flow detector kit is available as an option and for peace of mind, the Salt & Swim® 2.0 comes compete with a twoyear warranty. It is joined by two other salt chlorinator products from Hayward –the AquaRite Flo and AquaRite Flo Advanced – the latter of which is fully featured and will allow the control of additional pool equipment. Both AquaRite models come with a wide range of chlorine production capabilities and each includes a three-year warranty.

In addition to Hayward products, SCP also offers salt chlorinator solutions from two other leading brands – Davey and Pentair –plus of course, a number of other products which will reduce the amount of chlorine used in installations of all sizes.

PURIQ FAIRLOCK’S 100% ECOFRIENDLY UV WATER PURIFIER

The PURIQ Bright Series UV-C water purifier offers optimal technology for crystalclear water without the need for multiple chemicals and is kinder for the user too. Using the latest technology, the lamp placed in the pool water emits a very

powerful UV-C light with a wavelength of exactly 253.7 nm that kills practically all bacteria, viruses, algae and moulds. Using a UV light provides non-chemical disinfection, enabling effective primary control over waterborne bacteria, which can benefit both public and private pools.

This results in optimal purification, reducing the need by 80% of chlorine and other chemical usage. The PURIQ UV-C system, with its 100% eco-friendly operation, provides more natural, healthier water. The extra wide SAE 316 stainless steel housing extends the time the water is exposed to the strong UV-C radiation while also minimising the pressure drop as the water passes through. Not only is the system better for the pool and pool user, but the environment benefits too. There is a significantly reduced number of toxic by-products produced by the UV purifier ensuring that the end response is a cleaner, safer environment for all.

Thanks to the polished interior, there is virtually no adhesion of contaminants to the walls, which boosts the effectiveness of the UV-C radiation by a further 35%. The PURIQ UV-C water purifier contains intelligent electronics that signals an alert when it is time to replace the lamp, which ensures that the unit is always operating at peak efficiency and the water is clear. This way, the customer always has a perfectly working device they can rely on.

HYPROLYSER® SYSTEMS – ECOFRIENDLY, ON SITE HYPOCHLORITE GENERATION

Using electrochlorination technology; Hyprolyser® combines harmless and readily available salts, water and electricity to create a low strength, fresh <1% sodium hypochlorite solution, which falls below the threshold for hazardous classification.

Manufactured in the UK to exacting standards by Gaffey, the Hyprolyser® iSEC range is perfect for most pools up to 300m3

They are quick and easy to install and are proven to be significantly cheaper to run without the need to purchase costly chemicals.

In comparison for a busy 25m pool, the savings over a ten-year period are some 70% over traditional calcium hypochlorite systems with break-even in year two.

With no more hazardous chemicals transported to site, or need to be carefully stored, they give you a safer, cleaner and more environmentally friendly way to provide chlorine for your pool on demand; and provide a safer environment for pool operatives.

A significant environmental benefit includes a 92% reduction in plastic waste when compared to operators using traditional

packaged calcium hypochlorite products in drums, and similar reduction in energy and water usage involved in recycling those plastics.

Unique volumetric brine and water measurement ensures consistent accurate dosing and optimised energy usage. All key performance parameters are constantly monitored and can be accessed remotely via optional telemetry output at any time.

Hyprolyser® systems use ‘Plug & Play’ technology and are readily scalable for larger applications, making them ideal for any pool size, from small spa pools to the highcapacity requirements of leisure centres and theme parks with multiple pools and water features.

LIGHTHOUSE INTRODUCE TREATMENT OPTIONS FROM POOL TECHNOLOGIE

New for the UK market in 2023, Lighthouse has introduced products from French manufacturer Pool Technologie.

The brand has distinguished itself by offering a complete range of automatic water treatment products and as an expert in salt-water swimming pools for over 30 years, it offers reliable and high-performance equipment that is at the cutting edge of

technology plus eco-friendly and sustainable too.

Lighthouse can now offer the best device, suited to both installer and customer needs. With standard salt at 4g/l, low salt 2g/l and an ultra low salt system available down to 0.5/g/l, there is a system to suit everyone.

There are three ranges of equipment, from the entry-level ‘Mini’ system, which has basic functionality to make life easy for the customer including pH and chlorine peristaltic dosing, UV and salt chlorination.

Certikin, Plastica and SCP UK, Quantum eliminates contaminants leaving water fresh and clean.

Easy to install, Quantum gives peace of mind as dangerous organisms such as cryptosporidium and adenoviruses are destroyed by the photocatalytic process ensuring pool users are kept safe. Several natural processes occur as the pool water passes through the unit with only pure water returning to the pool.

As a result of the processes occurring inside the Quantum, including the production of hydroxyl radicals, the treated water is free of all oil-based substances such as sun creams and all organics including urea are totally removed resulting in sparkling water. Quantum also reduces the need for chemicals in the pool and helps eliminate the smell of chlorine.

Once installed, this cost-effective solution requires no maintenance; it is equipped with an intelligent lamp life indicator so when the UV lamp which initiates the photocatalytic reaction needs to be replaced this is displayed. Quantum is compatible with both salt and sea water and is available in three sizes. Choose from Mini (35m3), Single (65m3) or Double (130m3) to meet the specific needs of the pool’s capacity.

ELECRO’S H.R.UV-C SYSTEM REDUCES BOTH CHLORINE AND MAINTENANCE

H.R.UV-C is one of the newest members to the Elecro family of Sanitisers, and like its Quantum cousin, is also available from a number of leading distributors in the UK.

Designed using the latest knowledge of highly reflective reactor casing materials, the H.R.UV-C produces up to 95% reflectivity (if you compare this to stainless steel reactors only 20 to 28% reflection is typically achieved). Unlike stainless steel units that suffer corrosion issues, the H.R.UV-C is 100% sea and saltwater compatible.

The super reflective properties of the Elecro H.R.UV-C optimises the UV-C radiation and dramatically increases the performance. In addition, because the inside surface casing is so repellent, it means the product is also self-cleaning, reducing the need for maintenance.

Intelligent electronics indicate when the lamps are not producing sufficient UV-C and need to be changed, ensuring the unit is always performing optimally.

The H.R.UV-C is compatible with and complements all traditional treatment

methods including; chlorine, bromine, active oxygen / hydrogen peroxide and salt electrolysis. A narrow and extended chamber ensures maximum exposure to the powerful UV-C.

The intelligent lamp life indicator signals when the lamps are no longer producing sufficient UV-C and need to be changed. This ensures the unit is always performing optimally and has a long lamp life, up to 9,000 hours.

The H.R.UV-C is easy to use and install, plus can be retrofitted to any existing pool system too.

EXPERIENCE EXCEPTIONAL WATER QUALITY WITH QUEST FROM CERTIKIN

QUEST is a revolutionary breakthrough in swimming pool technology that sanitises water without requiring additional chemicals. Using a powerful combination of silver and copper electrode ionisation the system kills the bacteria and algae in the pool whilst at the same time the oxidising cell destroys and breaks down organic debris (caused by sweat, sun cream, dust, leaves, etc), leaving pure crystal clear and clean water.

A pulsed magnetic chamber further helps to improve the water quality by preventing the formation of new scale. This not only improves the efficiency of the pool’s filtration, circulation and heating equipment but also helps with the sanitisation as calcium deposits which are a breeding ground for bacteria no longer occur.

QUEST is simple and quick to install and operate whilst being less harmful, less expensive to maintain and more effective than traditional chlorine-based systems. In fact, one user of the system commented that they “thought their existing saltwater pool was awesome however now it does not come close to this freshwater system”. Within just two days they noticed a massive change with the water clean and clear giving the feeling they had just stepped out of a shower!

In water with good conductivity the system will operate without requiring any salt to be added to the pool water. In pools where the conductivity of the water is low as little as 0.5ppm of salt may be required to enable the oxidising cell to operate efficiently.

LET BIO-UV AND ASTRALPOOL MAKE LIGHT WORK OF WATER DISINFECTION

In a new arrangement for the 2023 season, AstralPool UK and BIO-UV are working together with the UK distributor supplying UV systems for both residential and commercial pools to the British market.

For more than 20 years, BIO-UV Group has been developing and marketing chlorine-free water treatment systems based on type C ultraviolet disinfection technology.

BIO-UV Group was the first 100% French company to be approved by the French Ministry of Solidarity and Health for medium pressure dechloramination in 2004 (MP range). The company has also been approved for low pressure since 2013 (LP and UV HO ranges). These two technologies ensure the lowest operating costs on the market.

So, if a more natural disinfection system with low operating costs sounds appealing for either commercial or domestic pool clients, AstralPool UK are now able to offer a range of UV water treatment solutions. Easy to install and maintain, the range features models to suit different pool sizes, each designed for long service with lamps lasting up to 13,000 hours.

To date, more than 150,000 private pools and spas in Europe are equipped with BIO-UV systems.

BIO-UV MP (medium pressure) is an ideal solution for commercial pool set ups. The system can reduce combined chlorine levels by up to 80% for an average level of 0.1 to 0.3 ppm, and is capable of destroying the three types of chloramines (mono, di and trichloramines) as well as trihalomethanes. Units are available with either a digital screen or touch screen (BIO-UV MP TS)

for displaying different reactor parameters to enable more efficient management and maintenance.

DRYDEN’S DA-GEN: A FREE RADICAL POOL SOLUTION

Owners and operators can get safe, low-cost and ecological pool water disinfection with the state-of-the-art DA-GEN (Dryden Aqua Generator) from Golden Coast.

DA-GEN is an innovative hydrolyser that uses oxidation and low water conductivity to generate free radicals for water disinfection. Free radicals and other oxygen compounds such as ozone, peroxide and persulfate destroy organic substances and pathogens in the water while minimising the use of chlorine.

Used with the Dryden Aqua Activator based on magnesium chloride, DA-GEN improves filtration and effectively removes phosphates, preventing the growth of algae and bacteria. The result? Exceptionally clean, clear water.

DA-GEN works as a complete, fully automatic water treatment system, and is fitted with a built-in Wi-Fi module to allow users to control it using the DA-GEN app on their device. Parameters are monitored 24/7 including pH, dosing, free chlorine and/or redox, filtration, temperature, backwashing and automatic flocculation.

“DA-GEN keeps everything under control and delivers outstanding water quality levels,” explained Hayden Phillips, North East Business Development, Golden Coast. “It works best with Dryden DAISY® system, so after the initial steps of enhancing filtration performance, coagulation and

disinfection using natural UV, DA-GEN offers advanced oxidation for disinfection using free radicals.”

Quick, Easy And Accurate Testing

Asafe environment is an essential and expected part of any wet leisure experience, and that obviously extends to the water found in pools, spas and hot tubs. It needs to be safe, clean and clear, but the last thing owners and operators want to do is spend an excessive amount of time and energy monitoring and testing and the water found in these products, let alone doing it with any inaccurate equipment.

Fast, user-friendly and accurate testing products are therefore a godsend. Not just for highlighting any safety issues, but also for ensuring equipment is operating within the correct environment too, as if not, there’s potentially a heavy price to pay for new equipment further down the line.

User safety is of course at the top of every pool or spa owners’ list though, and with commercial facilities experiencing much higher bather loads than their domestic cousins, owners and users need to be able to trust that the cooling waters that are being enjoyed are safe and in the best possible condition. Considerable time and money has been spent on developing more efficient and user-friendly testing systems, and that’s not surprising, as for commercial operators in particular, where there is the possibility of infection, only the latest products and best procedures are good enough. Down time as a result of poor procedures invariably leads to bad press, and this often spells disaster to a facility’s reputation, with guests then voting with their feet – a scenario to be avoided at all costs!

Regardless of size though, wet leisure products are always major investments for their owners and they need to be kept in the best possible condition – and that includes the water within them. Therefore, having the correct products to test water conditions is essential and needed on an ongoing basis and in this issue, we take a closer look at

just some of the testing solutions that are currently on the market.

Creating The Ideal Indoor Environment

Creating and maintaining the perfect environment for indoor pools and spas is not an easy task – far from it! It’s one thing ensuring the water is clean and heated to the desired operating temperature, but providing the correct atmosphere outside of the water is an entirely different challenge. Without having effective dehumidification and ventilation in place, problems can arise for both users of a facility and the fabric of the building itself. One of the most obvious and visible issues is condensation, something which if not dealt with will ultimately lead to damage of either the décor or even the structure of the building housing any pool or spa.

So it’s essential that an indoor environment should have a well-planned and appropriate dehumidification and ventilation system which will provide comfortable conditions for swimmers, bathers, spectators, staff and just as importantly, one that also protects the facility itself.

It is a specialist area, but thankfully there’s plenty of advice and product choices available which will solve numerous operating challenges under the headings of ‘dehumidification’ and ‘environmental control’ and in doing so, will reduce energy usage, help to protect facilities and therefore minimise running costs for owners and operators.

With the wealth of expertise that’s available in the sector, designers and installers should find that choosing the most energy efficient way to manage indoor pool and spa environments whilst satisfying building control regulations isn’t as daunting a task as they had feared. In fact, when compared to the not so distant past, creating the perfect operating conditions are now a breeze and in this issue, we look at just some of the current solutions.

TROTEC’S GERMAN QUALITY –AVAILABLE FROM FAIRLOCKS

The DS series of dehumidifiers from Trotec

feature highly efficient moisture control and heat recovery for all indoor pools and spas are in stock and available from Fairlocks Pool Products.

FLEXIBILITY AND PEACE OF MIND FROM CERTIKIN

The ingenious, multi-tasking Calorex Variheat Series 3 air handling unit, featuring a PLC touchscreen as standard and endless configuration options offers the ultimate in flexibility to suit almost every plant room. Total peace of mind is provided as commissioning comes as standard together with a two-year on site parts and labour warranty.

Indoor swimming pools constantly evaporate large volumes of moisture into the space around them. Totally selfcontrolling, the Variheat will remove this moisture and recover energy from it. In controlling the operation of the heat source and combining it with a highly efficient heat pump dehumidifier, it provides air and water

heating, humidity control, ventilation and energy recovery.

By utilising this method, energy costs are kept to a minimum. Typically, for every

unit of power that a Variheat consumes, it will convert more than twice this amount to usable heat.

The potential energy savings are huge. In fact, compared to traditional heat and ventilation, considerable energy cost saving can be made and corresponding CO2 emissions can be dramatically reduced.

Pre-set at the factory, Variheat fans will automatically speed adjust to differing duct work and/or system air filter resistances, ensuring optimum air flow is constantly maintained. This reduces commissioning time and automatically optimises performance, power consumption and noise levels.

The Variheat features internet connection capability to PC, smartphone or selected BMS that provides remote monitoring and set point control; comprehensive diagnostic information and EC/Inverter constant flow fans.

The use of air source heat pumps to heat the water in external pools is well established but many of these are not suitable for indoor

AN INNOVATIVE SOLUTION FOR A PRESTIGIOUS LONDON PROPERTY CASE STUDY

Recotherm were instructed by pool and spa specialists Poolcourt Ltd to design a bespoke air handling unit for a unique project at a prestigious residential property located in Belgravia, London.

There were various design challenges to overcome on this project. The unit needed to be installed in the basement with limited access and the property featured a swimming pool area with a moving floor, so the client desired a ventilation solution capable of handling a substantial cooling load to maintain a comfortable environment during events. However, the property was also subject to strict local planning regulations prohibiting the use of exterior condensing units normally needed for cooling.

Recotherm, who are well known for their high quality units and their expertise in designing bespoke swimming pool ventilation systems, proceeded to develop

a one-of-a-kind unit. By integrating the condensing element of the refrigeration process into the unit, they overcame the local authority’s restrictions whilst also providing efficient and effective ventilation that could adapt to changing pool floor configurations. The basement access was overcome with Recotherm’s popular ‘flat pack’ process, building the unit within the plant room.

Recotherm’s unit included three fans to ensure that the system could operate on, and prioritise whenever possible, full fresh air even when the condenser was running at full speed. This design ensured efficient cooling while maintaining optimal air quality in the presence of a crowd.

pools and installers need to be aware of the pitfalls such as low operating ambient limits and instead go for high quality, performance systems for both air to water and air to air.

Many of Recotherm’s domestic units are designed around heat pumps providing the low pressure, hot water (LPHW) and the company has also recently developed their Aerum systems that provide fresh air dehumidification combined with air to air heat via Toshiba heat pumps – ideal where additional LPHW plant is not needed or desired.

With Aerum, all the features normally associated with the Recotherm Aeris range (high build quality, state-of-the-art controls, pleasant fresh air environment in the pool hall and technical backup) are still there, but with the added advantage that the unit is a standalone package and can provide a significant amount of cooling in the summer if this is required.

Heat pumps may be a necessity in future and they can be a benefit if owners want to reduce their impact on the environment, but they do operate at lower temperatures in a high temperature environment so heat exchangers and ductwork generally need to be bigger which can impact on space and capital costs.

To help customers make the correct choice of system, Recotherm have qualified, time served surveyors, designers and f-gas engineers in-house.

The company has also expanded their

Service Department staff to take on the demand for service and commissioning visits. All of the firm’s engineers are fully trained on Recotherm AHUs and Trend controllers. Their new engineers also have a wealth of experience on competitors’ units, which allows the company to trouble shoot if someone has a problem whilst the Recotherm technical helpline provides off site assistance and on call resolutions when possible.

ENJOY PROVEN DEHUMIDIFICATION TECHNOLOGY FROM HEATSTAR

For nearly 45 years, Heatstar have been guiding their clients towards responsible energy solutions for swimming pools, setting the benchmark in an environmentally conscious industry.

The Heatstar EC range of highly energy efficient environmental control systems are able to out-perform alternative equipment by utilising different advanced technologies to achieve unrivalled performance, reducing fuel bills and guaranteeing long term efficiency.

A star of the Heatstar EC range is the energy efficient Phoenix EC, a hybrid heat recovery ventilation system of exceptional quality, suitable for the effective dehumidification of indoor commercial and domestic swimming pools.

This system offers ultra-high heat recovery and heat efficiency thanks to its utilisation of hybrid technology. This hybrid set up focuses on three main areas: (1) The fans used in the units, (2) optimising heat recovery (‘free’ heat) and (3) energy efficient dehumidification.

Firstly, the Phoenix EC utilises the most energy efficient fans on the market. These digital fans utilise ‘auto-fan’ technology whereby the speed and power of the air-

recirculation fan is managed automatically to enable significant energy savings whenever there is low demand for dehumidification or airheating.

Secondly, the unit is fitted with a cross-flow recuperators to optimise heat recovery. The recuperators passively conducts heat from the exhausted pool room air via a series of adjoining plates directly to the incoming colder fresh air. This process, in combination with the dehumidification heat pump, produces unrivalled levels of heat recovery. Lastly the Phoenix boasts energy efficient dehumidification. The Phoenix’s dehumidification heat pump creates a cold evaporator coil to condense the moisture present in the air to reduce humidity levels. Through this process the heat pump absorbs both latent and sensible energy which is upgraded and recycled back into both the pool room air and pool water.

At an ambient air temperature of 20°C the Phoenix EC can deliver an efficiency of over 140% and is able to offer the lowest operating cost of any such system.

Firm Favourites For Heating Water

For a while now, heat pumps have been a firm favourite within the UK wet leisure industry and they’re often the go-to choice for heating the water in suitable pools and spas in an environmentally friendly way. With increased coverage of their benefits, combined with high energy prices they’re a product which is guaranteed to prosper. In this issue, we put various eco-friendly options under the spotlight

For numerous wet leisure installations across the UK, heat pumps have, for a number of years now, been accepted as an ideal solution to heat water efficiently whilst extending what are normally short pool seasons here in the UK –with this year being a prime example!

With models producing many times more energy than they consume, heat pumps effortlessly outperform many types of more conventional heating methods – so it’s easy to see why they’ve been such a popular choice for both owners and installers alike.

Their use has attracted attention far beyond our industry too. Even before the energy crisis kicked in, heat pumps for homes were being touted as an ideal longterm solution for heating needs and they appeared on a number of mainstream media programmes and news pieces, meaning their profile was lifted due to a much wider audience. After hopefully peaking, energy prices are slowly coming down, but their profile and therefore use within pools and spas is likely to be further enhanced.

The very latest heat pump models have become increasingly sophisticated and intelligent in their operation, resulting in impressive energy, and therefore cost savings being made. Most designs now feature some form of inverter technology and a number of them can now also be controlled and monitored remotely via smart device apps too. As the technology improves, so too does their flexibility, ease of use, and even their looks. All of which further adds to both their appeal and ultimately their increased adoption too.

With various brands, models and options available from a variety of sources, careful research, planning and advice is a must, but there’s often a perfect heat pump solution on offer for virtually any pool or even spa configuration. So, with options aplenty on offer from numerous suppliers and brands, in this issue, we take a closer look at some of the

hottest heat pump options that are currently on the market.

COST EFFECTIVE HEATING WITH ECO-V HEAT PUMPS FROM WATERCO

The Electroheat ECO-V pool heat pump range from Waterco uses just a fraction of the energy to generate the same amount of heat compared to gas and electric heaters. Unlike solar heating, there is no reliance on the sun as the latent heat in the air is used. For every 1kW of electricity consumed, the Electroheat ECO-V can produce up to 8kW of heat. Waterco’s inverter technology uses a variable speed compressor. It slows down and speeds up as needed to maintain the desired temperature. This provides a more stable water temperature and 15%-30% energy savings over fixed speed systems, as well as quieter operation.

Electroheat ECO-V inverter pool heat pumps also feature automatic de-icing. In cooler climates or winter months when a build-up of ice is detected, the heat pump shifts temporarily into the cooling mode to reverse the

flow of refrigerant through the evaporator coils. Hot refrigerant moves through the outside coils, melting ice and defrosting the system. When the defrost cycle is complete, the unit shifts back to heating mode.

Available in both sidemounted and top-mounted fan versions and model sizes from 5kW to 25kW, whatever the installation there is a Waterco ECO-V heat pump to suit.

Showing Wet Leisure In Its Best Possible Light

options

With what seems like a vast number of options now available for every type of wet leisure setting, it’s no exaggeration to say that the latest lighting technologies and products have literally transformed the look of many of today’s waterbased installations in both domestic and commercial environments, allowing them to be seen in their best possible light.

Super efficient LED’s have become the accepted choice of professionals across a wide range of projects and their development and use has meant that the plain yet functional white lights, with the occasional filter on show, that were a common sight have largely become a memory from yesteryear.

As with any kind of product that has an element of technology, improvements are made on an ongoing basis and time has definitely not stood still for options within the lighting sector. LED is a far more sustainable lighting solution when compared to previous generations and technologies. They do not generate toxic waste, they have a longer service life and they require significantly less energy to function. That all combines to provide a greatly reduced impact on the environment whilst saving costs too. In addition to their green credentials, and for many installations arguably a more important feature is that a mix of cleverly installed lighting can provide dramatic effects inside a pool or spa, enhancing features and project aesthetics plus they can also be used externally to soften walls and other finishes too. Often, they can even provide enhanced visual benefits, which greatly assists with safety, which is especially key for busy commercial settings.

In short, whole areas can be improved with thoughtful and imaginative lighting, with operating costs being greatly reduced over the lifetime of the product. So with these benefits, surely now is the time to see the light!

Thanks to its ingenious design, the MidBRiO has an impressive light beam angle of up to 160°. Where other lights diffuse 120°, the Mid-BRiO illuminates more of the pool delivering highperformance lighting with hardly any unlit areas.

Mid-BRiO delivers a compact, innovative and modern solution for illuminating swimming pools of the future. It screws into a standard 1.5” wall inlet regardless and is compatible with all pool coverings (one-piece, liner, concrete, etc.). For a customised finish, it is is available in two coloured bezels – an elegant stainless steel version and white.

WATER-TEC LIGHTING OPTIONS SUIT A WIDE RANGE OF SETTINGS

The latest range of products from WaterTec – which are available through Fairlocks Pool Products – have been developed with recent environmental issues at the forefront of their design. LED lighting is now the world’s number one choice for all lighting applications and with Water-Tec, Fairlocks are able to offer the very latest technology – high powered LEDs with low energy consumption combined with the contemporary look that customers desire.

Some of the benefits of the Water-Tec LED lights include all 316L stainless steel bodies with electro polished front face, high powered energy efficient LED power of 2,000lm for WT4 and WT5, up to 50,000 hours life span, colour changing RGB options with full digital control (DMX and Zigbee).

LED lighting is now the go-to option for swimming pool lighting as it offers the safest, most cost-effective option. The Water-Tec light range features options for either Warm or Cool lenses and standard 20m cable

length. All are controllable to suit the mood / ambience of the pool with both Wi-Fi and / or a smart device (both White and RGB) options.

The team at Fairlocks can advise on the number of lights required to provide the best lighting display for the size of pool, and type of atmosphere the lighting design can provide. There really are unlimited options with swimming pool lighting and it comes down to style, design and the ultimate look of the finished pool that will determine the light installation.

DESIGN, SIMPLICITY AND FLEXIBILITY – ASTRALPOOL’S LUMIPLUS FLEXIMINI

LumiPlus – AstraPool’s most comprehensive range of underwater LED lights for public, commercial and residential pools – was expanded last year with the introduction of its most flexible, convenient and compact option: the FlexiMini.

More harmonious, elegant and efficient pools are the three things that pool owners look for most when designing a new space in their garden or renovating an existing water feature. Which means that opting for smaller, discreet and energy-efficient designs is undoubtedly a guarantee of success.

With all this in mind, AstralPool developed the LumiPlus FlexiMini lights.

The smaller size of these LEDs makes for a more discreet and modern design that aligns with current trends for residential projects.

The company also went a step further in terms of installation and designed the LumiPlus FlexiMini as a single point of light that adapts to the most popular pool types on the market. This move simplifies installation

for both new and existing pools and means it can be combined with any of the fittings from the LumiPlus Flexi range in white, beige, light grey, anthracite and stainless steel.

The LumiPlus FlexiMini has taken flexibility to a new level – not only can it be adapted to almost any existing installation, but it also offers two wattages to choose from. For example, users can set different intensities depending on the area of the pool or opt for more discreet, efficient lighting based on more points of light with lower intensity.

Manufactured with LEDs, premium electronic components and produced entirely in the EU in compliance with European quality standards, the entire range of

LumiPlus Flexi lights is highly adaptable to any type of pool – liner or concrete – and is suitable for both new builds and existing installations.

In addition, it comes with a three-year warranty.

A RANGE OF ENERGY-EFFICIENT POOL LIGHTING OPTIONS FROM PLASTICA

Plastica believe that any swimming pool light sold should be LED and have made a conscious effort to adopt and understand the concept in order to give the best possible service and support in planning and specifying LED lighting projects. They are able to offer a full range of options, from

THE FAST TRACK TO BETTER LIGHTING AT KENT POOL CASE STUDY

The newly built £20m White Oak Leisure Centre in Swanley, Kent is one of many facilities that has benefitted from innovative direct LED lighting from EVA Optic.

Supplied in the UK by wet leisure distributor Golden Coast, a number of LED lights were fitted, including 34 60w 117cm EVAline linear lights around the perimeter of the 25 metre, 6-lane swimming pool.

Around the adjacent learner pool, ten 60W 233cm EVAline linear lights were fitted, along with five EVA Optic downlights.

Unlike indirect lighting, EVA Optic direct LED lighting is positioned overhead shining down over the water, producing minimal glare and surface reflection. This allows greater visibility into the water for swimmers and lifeguards, and ensures a safer pool environment.

EVA Optic LED lighting is extremely powerful, with the main pool at White Oak achieving an average lux of 313 and uniformity of 0.84. The learner pool had an average lux of 420 with a uniformity of 0.6.

EVAline is a modular LED line system, made from clear anodised aluminium. A base module is connected to the ceiling, and a light module is connected to the base at any spot where light is needed. Because of this flexibility, EVAline is suitable for most locations and can be easily configured to the site’s requirements.

standard like for like PAR56 replacement, all the way up to multi-light configurations which all link into a central controller to ensure synchronicity during colour changes across the size range.

The Eolia light is a direct replacement for PAR56 style lighting systems, present in most standard pool installations. These are available in white, with 20W and 40W versions available, as well as a 30W RGBW which can be linked to other Brio RGBW lights such as the Mini Brio 2 and Mini Brio+.

The Chroma universal light is an essential product to help bring pools with old, obsolete or hard to source lights back to life. Its adjustable feet allow it to be fitted to most PAR56 style niches, as well as others that possess a niche within the adjustable limitations of the light. These lights are available with 20W and 40W versions in white and a 40W RGBW model which, just like the Eolia, can be synchronised with other RGBW lights within the Brio range.

The Mini Brio range has evolved over the last two years and now has four impressive 1.5” mini lights available. The Mini Brio+ range is a direct replacement for the older Mini Chroma models, but now has approximately half the power consumption with the same light intensity. The Mini Brio 2 is brighter version of the Mini Brio+ with 1300lm from just 12W on the white, and 900lm from 12W on the RGBW.

LINER AND CONCRETE POOL LIGHTING SOLUTIONS FROM CERTIKIN

The PU2 Mini LED Light from Certikin is available in a liner as well as concrete pool version. Available in both RGBW and white, these highly efficient lights are easy to install, have a high output and the neatest of finishes. The RGBW version is controllable via a smartphone using the free app, giving complete control over colour, sequences and brightness. For concrete pools, the full 316 grade stainless steel body fits directly into a standard 1.5-inch pipe, leaving just the 2mm thick stainless steel fascia on display in the pool. For liner applications, the light screws into a standard Certikin inlet fitting leaving an attractive, clean finish.

These are now available ready to order and are an ideal companion to the Flolux range of stainless steel fittings available from the company.

Certikin is at the forefront of lighting design, and pool and spa owners will struggle to

find a greater range in the water leisure marketplace. Over the years, the company has continued to develop an ever-expanding line-up of products which includes the Certikin PU9 and PU6 lights. These are some of the most popular and reliable lights in the industry, with numerous benefits for both the pool builder and customer alike.

GOLDEN COAST OFFER ROBUST LED LIGHTING FROM EVA OPTIC

The SubAqua underwater LED light is the latest innovation from Dutch manufacturer EVA Optic, offering highly robust lighting made to withstand the demands of a swimming pool environment.

Available from Golden Coast, the SubAqua range includes the 25W Mono, where customers can choose from warm white, clear white or Mediterranean blue, and the

25W RGBW in warm or clear white. Both models have a satin cover and are ideal for residential pools. Also available are the 40W Mono and the 50W RGBW, both with a microprism cover making them well suited to competition, recreational, and instruction pools.

All existing accessories for the A series and RX series lights are fully compatible with the new SubAqua series, meaning EVA customers can easily upgrade their lighting to SubAqua without having to purchase new accessories or change their installation setup.

The SubAqua range of underwater lighting can be installed up to 25 metres below the water level and is waterresistant up to an IPX8 rating.

A unique temperature monitoring solution automatically adjusts the lights’ performance to prevent overheating damage and ensure maximum lifespan. Using a DMX controller, users can create custom light scenes and adjust the colour and intensity of the lights as needed.

“The SubAqua is just the latest in a long line of superior lighting solutions from EVA Optic,” said Ian Picken, South East Business Development, Golden Coast. “SubAqua lights have multi-angle beams that illuminate right to the bottom of the pool and offer perfect colour mixing with minimal glare, so swimmers can enjoy a clear and vibrant view of their surroundings.” SPN

Quality, Strength And More –The Appeal Of Stainless Steel

The durability and longevity of stainless steel in pools, spas and their associated accessories not only makes for a responsible choice, the timeless material also provides luxury, highend looks too. Stainless steel is recyclable, so is ecologically sustainable, as well as being eminently durable. It can also withstand challenging climate conditions meaning it’s equally at home in both an outdoor or indoor environment.

Its numerous benefits mean that the wet leisure industry has implemented stainless steel in many situations – from small spas and hot tubs to the largest of pools, plus a wide range of ancillary products such as gratings, drains, lighting, filters – all utilise the multitalented material. In short, the flexible nature of stainless steel has captured the imagination of many manufacturers and end users making it a popular option across the pool and spa market.

In this latest stainless steel-focused feature, we examine a selection of products that are utilising the versatile material and benefits it provides.

ONE-PIECE STAINLESS STEEL POOL OPTIONS FROM ASTRALPOOL

AstralPool UK Ltd have supplied a number of complete stainless steel pools ranging from commercial applications to high-end developments.

Due to their intrinsic link with the manufacturers through its parent company Fluidra, AstralPool are well placed to build on the existing technical expertise by introducing further R&D of the pools, an example being where different flooring finish options are being developed to provide customers with a variety of styles to choose from. This is based on direct customer feedback where the need for alternative flooring options was highlighted.

A few years ago, AstralPool introduced new onepiece stainless steel pool options, which offer a degree of flexibility and

functionality to cater for this niche market where users desire a high-end product but with the convenience of a onepiece solution.

They offer a stunning luxurious finish with functional performance and can be provided with a range of optional extras such as turbine driven counter-current units, loungers and neck massagers.

The company are committed to developing this niche sector and have a dedicated Business Development Manager working alongside a technical and project team. With a remit to develop this area, AstraPool seeks to expand the awareness of the company’s offering to existing trade customers but also to create awareness amongst key architects, specifiers and spa consultants who may be involved at various stages within the design process in this niche market.

Based on the fact that customers are continually looking for that exclusive ‘wow’ factor, AstralPool are confident that the demand will continue to grow as a pool with a polished stainless steel finish will certainly deliver this plus much more!

CUSTOM-BUILT SOLUTIONS PRODUCED TO EXACTING STANDARDS

For SpaFlo, stainless steel provides the best solution in the long term and the company is focused on creating striking, luxurious, custom-built spas and pools that they manufacture exclusively from the durable and flexible material.

“At SpaFlo, our in-house designers use stainless steel to create stunning bespoke products, that satisfy the most demanding and high-end brief,” said Richard Gowland, Managing Director at the Widnes-based firm. “Thanks to our in-depth specialist knowledge, experience and ingenuity around the use of this material, the demand for stainless steel products for a variety of spa related applications means that we’ve set up a Special Projects Division to help our trade customers turn a potential headache into a sleek and seamless installation,” added Richard.

SpaFlo also offers a wide range of stainless steel accessories, including pool strainer boxes, skimmers, UV and air blower connections, lounger and bubbler stations plus pipework manifolds that can all be manufactured to suit any installation and complete the streamlined look.

The appeal of stainless steel for use in the construction of pools and spas goes much further than it being a material chosen for challenging environments. The design team’s creative flair and attention to detail ensures that every SpaFlo designed and built stainless steel spa product is unique and will stand out in any prestigious garden or indoor spa space.

As a multi-award-winning business, SpaFlo works with most of the leading pool and spa installation companies on projects for highend hotels, super yachts and luxury spas, as well as supplying private individuals.

Designed, manufactured and tested in their own UK-based factory, SpaFlo’s stainless steel spas have enabled them to innovate and mitigate against global price and supply chain issues, without cutting corners or delaying delivery.

RENOVATING THE LEISURE SECTOR WITH MYRTHA STAINLESS STEEL SOLUTIONS

Myrtha Pools has fused stainless steel design with off site methodology, combining the sustainable and modular principles of modern methods of construction to save leisure operators both time and money in their pool upgrades.

Kevin Burns, UK Business Development Manager at Myrtha Pools, said: “The overarching aim of our stainless steel, PVC technology is to increase the longevity of leisure facilities, while assembling most of the necessary components to this operation in factory-controlled off site environments. This means the time required on site is reduced, so leisure operators can keep their existing pool open longer and not miss out on vital income.

“Our adaptable chromium-rich steel panels are easily moulded to fit any size and location and to meet the needs of each individual project. They also offer a 45% smaller carbon footprint than traditional materials used for pool construction, such as tile and concrete. However, for cash-strapped operators, it’s important to note that an existing concrete pool can be relined rather than replaced. Our RenovAction® technology is a perfect example of how operators can simply refurbish rather than start a completely new build to target areas that are failing without significant demolition.

“For example, improvements in both guttering and filtration can be achieved through renovation, delivering additional benefits to hygiene and water quality. It’s about making those incremental improvements that over time make a

significant dent on the biggest cost of having a pool – running and heating it.”

Stainless steel over traditional methods can futureproof pools through heat resistant liner and removable protective film, which is added to the steel lining before Myrtha’s pool skin technology is added. Corrosion prevention and filtration improvements are also in the make up of the technology, helping leisure operators deliver on their long-term planning objectives.

ENJOY STRENGTH AND LONGEVITY WITH PLASTICA’S STAINLESS STEEL PRODUCTS

Plastica has extensive experience in manufacturing various swimming pool products, particularly those made of

stainless steel. Their expertise allows them to offer bespoke solutions to meet the specific requirements of individual orders. For instance, they can create handrails or ladders that are tailor-made to fit the exact specifications provided by the client.

One area where Plastica has focused on ensuring quality and safety is in the production of 43mm 316 grade mirror polished stainless steel ladders. Launched in 2019 and designed and manufactured at their own factory, they are installed with a double top tread positioned close to the pool wall, which helps reduce the risk of entrapment. Additionally, the ladders feature anti-slip treads with improved grip, enhancing safety for users.

Another product that Plastica is known for is their stainless steel Domestic Slidelock Reel System. Widely recognised as one of the top domestic reels available, Plastica developed a T-model version of the reel system, which is supplied with all the necessary straps, fittings and an instruction guide, ensuring easy installation for new or existing covers on adjustable tubes. The T-Model system is available in two sizes: the small tube extends from 3.05m to 4.57m (10’ to 15’) pool width, and the larger version extends from 4.88m to 6.4m (16’ to 21’) pool width.

Building upon the success of the Slidelock Reel System, Plastica introduced the Slidelock Max Telescopic Reel in 2020. This upgraded version features 138mm diameter anodized aluminium tubes and provides coverage for tube widths ranging from 6m to 7m with a maximum cover width of 6.7m on the smaller option. The large option ranges from 7m up to 8m with a maximum cover width of 7.7m. The Slidelock Max end stands are constructed with highly polished 48mm diameter 316 stainless steel tubes with various end stand options available, including the T-model, floor base plate and a new shaped wall mount.

For high-quality pool design and construction that companies are proud to put their name to, for many projects, it makes sense to finish with a Flolux fitting.

FOR CERTIKIN, IT’S ALL IN THE DETAIL

In addition to the innovatively designed range of Flolux fittings which are an ideal companion to the new PU2 Mini LED Light (which is featured in the lighting feature of this issue of SPN), Certikin urges customers not to ‘throw the baby out with the bath water’, as many pools and spas can be made to look as good as new using Certikin’s replacement fittings.

FLOLUX FITTINGS – THEIR QUALITY IS REFLECTED IN THEIR FINISH

A huge amount of thought goes into designing luxury swimming pools and spas. But when selecting swimming pool and spa fittings, such as eyeball returns, pool builders tend to default to white PVC as standard. For luxury builds though, PVC fittings can compromise high-end design by detracting from a polished and luxurious look. Not only this, plastic fittings are known to break down and discolour over time due to chemical and UV exposure.

Flolux stainless steel fittings are superior in both style and substance. Purposefully designed to finish any build impeccably, their mirror-finish causes them to disappear into their surroundings, enhancing, instead of detracting from the design.

Made from 316L marinegrade stainless steel, they’re also longer-lasting than the PVC alternative. Compare the two

When

hand-in-hand and the difference in quality is obvious – Flolux fittings are solid and weighty.

Suitable for concrete and some fibreglass pools, Flolux fittings come in push-fit and threaded systems that are very easy to install during the build, or retrospectively.

The ideal upgrade for any luxury pool or spa, stainless steel fittings are successfully offered as a contract variation by builders across the globe, helping to increase customer satisfaction and profitability.

For a quick and simple way to give a pool a refreshing make-over, then look no further than Certikin’s stainless steel transformation kits for concrete pools. Designed to transform standard Certikin plastic fittings into luxurious polished stainless steel fittings, they are suitable for both new build and retrofit. Available in a square (ideal for a contemporary modern look) or classic round design, the range includes skimmer, cover plates, inlets and vac points.

SPAFLO’S AWARD-WINNING STAINLESS STEEL SOLUTION

The company created a bespoke 6-seater stainless steel hot tub, with overall external dimensions of 3.0 metres x 2.4 metres. The design incorporated individually placed seat massage jets, so each seating position offered a slightly different massage. Colour changing LEDs, with many different pre-programmed sequences, completed and enhanced the project which was completely tailored to the landscaped garden and usage requirements. Creating a luxury bathing facility that didn’t look out of place at the property was a big design factor for the clients. Fast access to the hot tub was also a priority in the design that resulted in a fully automatic slatted cover being fitted – not an easy task. SpaFlo designed a suitable wet tank housing for the cover, that had suction installed to ensure suitable water movement in the wet pit. An overflow for heavy rainfall was also fitted plus an automatic water top-up to ensure the correct level of water is maintained within the hot tub for the slatted cover to work.

SpaFlo manufactured and delivered the luxurious stainless steel hot tub to site, at the correct time to ensure the landscapers’ progress was consistent.

When it comes to making an entrance (or exit) Certikin also have a range of quality ladders for both domestic and commercial pools.

Certikin 1.7”/43mm ladders are supplied with stainless steel anti-slip treads as standard, as well as the new Certikin 1.7”/43mm pinch anchor. The pinch anchor design is based on the popular 1.5”/38mm model for a secure, sturdy installation on all types of pool surround.

All 1.7”/43mm ladders are now manufactured in 316 grade stainless steel as standard and are suitable for concrete and liner pools.

GOLDEN COAST OFFER PEERLESS STYLE WITH PAHLÉN STEEL

Equally at home alongside wood, tiles, fibreglass, or concrete, stainless steels’ refined style adds an edge of smartness to pools and spas. And with Pahlén’s offerings – exclusively available through Golden Coast – achieving that sought-after luxury has never been more accessible.

Golden Coast offers an array of Pahlén stainless steel fittings, including inlets, vac points and main drains. Crafted from acidproof stainless steel (AISI 316L), these accessories effortlessly combine form and function, ensuring lasting durability and impeccable aesthetics.

“Pahlén’s meticulous designs have always been a step above,” explained Mark Hopkins, South East Business Development, Golden Coast.

“Their widemouth stainless steel skimmer is truly revolutionary. Traditionally, skimmers require a lid and frame accessed from above, disrupting the pool’s aesthetics. But Pahlén ingeniously resolved this issue by allowing the skimmer basket to be emptied from the front,

seamlessly integrating both functionality and elegance.”

The Swedish brand’s commitment to innovation and the use of stainless steel in its products extends to their line up of countercurrent units, including the Jet Swim Motion. This ingenious system employs a cutting-edge flow technique, simulating natural swimming conditions. Also available is the Pahlén Jet Swim 2000, which offers adjustable jet streams up to 71 m³/h – making it ideal for users looking to make fitness gains.

As well as the Pahlén range, Flexinox water curtains and water cannons are another eye-catching stainless steel option, giving an exotic edge to a pool build and adding something a little different to the norm.

ASTRALPOOL HAS EXPANDED ITS STAINLESS STEEL FITTINGS RANGE

In addition to offering complete stainless pool solutions, AstralPool also offer a range of fittings produced in the material. Last year it added to its range with the launch of three solutions for enhancing a pool’s finish with stainless steel.

LumiPlus FlexiNiche is AstralPool’s LED projector solution that adapts to any type of new-build or existing pool, as it can be fitted in niches of 180 to 230mm in diameter by just adjusting the screws. Ideal for public, hotel and residential pools, and now available in a stainless steel

version (all in stainless steel or with an ABS body and stainless steel embellisher).

A High-Water Level Skimmer is another of the solutions available in stainless steel and its main feature is that it gives the visual effect of an overflow pool, as it enables the water line to be placed just below the coping stone (approximately +/-4 cm).

The stainless steel embellishers round off this range of ABS pool accessories and enable existing pools originally built with ABS materials to be upgraded.

For 2023, AstralPool have added STYLE stainless steel pool fittings to their offering too. Perfect for building, renovating and improving a pool, and compatible with all interchangeable accessories (plastic and stainless steel), they are available in both round and square options and feature a contemporary design.

Delivering An Honest And Reliable Service For All

In this issue, with a landmark birthday on the horizon, Fairlocks Pool Products Director Paul Webb, MISPE,

As I approach the landmark of my 60th birthday (1963 was a great year to be born which I share with several other leading figures in the pool industry including Richard Way and Martin Borley, plus not to mention the late George Michael and my lovely wife Annie), inevitably I find myself reflecting on my life and career.

Time seems to fly by especially as we get older, but I still vividly remember my first day at the PG Group, (later to become Certikin) back in January 1990. I started on the same day as Neil Murray – it literally seems like yesterday!

Over the years I have been fortunate to work with some eminent characters in the pool industry including, in my opinion, our founding father the late Peter Geekie, Patrick Thorpe, and David Adams, all of whom taught me so much which enabled me to successfully start Fairlocks Pool Products Ltd with my good friend and business partner Julian Hunnable in 2006.

Recent events have also started me thinking too; the Titan sub disaster in June was something which initially left me cold, but later made me seriously consider the morality of the company who arranged the dive and the vast amount of money paid by the five people who tragically lost their lives. The CEO of OceanGate who also lost his life seemed to have a very haphazard approach to safety to say the least and it is baffling that the sub had not gone through any formal testing procedures or been subject to any regulation either.

Then there is the big question – should the wreck of the Titanic be left alone now?

After all these years the wreck had laid

undisturbed but recently became the centre of a feeding frenzy with social media awash with theories and suggestions, one of which I saw was that it was not the Titanic which sank in 1912. Apparently, the owner of the ship, JP Morgan switched the ship to its sister vessel Olympic, which had already been damaged in a collision with a warship, as he wanted to claim the insurance money. The story goes that all the other rich people in the USA, including Mr Astor, who at the time was the wealthiest man in the world, were against starting a federal system. So basically, JP Morgan along with the Rothchild family arranged that they were all on the Titanic and then at the last minute they changed their plans and didn’t sail on that ill-fated voyage from Southampton in April 1912. The following year, the Federal Reserve System of America was formed…

In life we all face difficult situations and at times must make tough choices both in our personal and work lives, I have always tried to do the right thing and be honest (as a child my dad used to say “you know where you are with a thief but you never know where you are with a liar” and these days my wife is constantly telling me to be the bigger person and rise above confrontational things and people. It can be hard of course, and when the ever-demanding pool owner calls to say their cover has broken down and it is an emergency as they have a pool party, it certainly tests this resolve to the max!

Having said that, I love working in the pool industry (what else could I do now anyway?) and I’m always saying to family and friends that running Fairlocks Pool Products is my hobby which I relish every single day and

right now, as the big 60 draws ever closer, the ‘R’ word could not be further from my thoughts!

Over the years the industry has changed massively and these days, although it’s still a seasonal one, the peaks and troughs are thankfully much smoother. Our product mix helps enormously with this, and we have spent lots of time identifying products which not only are unique to FPP, but can be can also be used all year round – our Nemo underwater tools being one great example.

Thinking back to my time spent with the late and hugely respected Peter Geekie, he realised very quickly if he was going to build a successful distribution business, he could only sell via the pool trade. The main point being you can’t have it both ways – it’s as simple as that – and I am proud to say I run a trade only company and it will always remain that way. Of course, this must be a two-way street and whenever we pass leads to our trade partners, we expect them to use our products in return, which generally is the case I’m pleased to say!

I think experience, teamed up with common sense and conscientiousness, is the key to future success, there is no substitute for having been there and done it. Unfortunately, there are still too many suppliers who claim they have far more experience than they do, it’s very easy to hide behind other people’s knowledge, ultimately, they will be found out. But sometimes it’s too late and ending up with a disgruntled customer is not what anyone wants! Providing good, ecologically sound (wherever possible) products, together with honest and reliable service, is not a bad benchmark and it’s one I have made a cornerstone of our business from day one.

In the words of my idol the late, great and hugely missed soul superstar and pop legend Luther Vandross… “Never Too Much”.

Live long and prosper people!
