RECYCLING AND RUBBISH COLLECTION/DISPOSAL Recycling The Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre, located at 79 Maria Place Extension (next to the Fire Station), is a one-stop shop for resource recovery and waste minimisation in the Whanganui District. The Centre is open Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 4.30pm and Sunday, 10.00am to 4.00pm. It is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday and New Year’s Day. A monthly pick-up service is available for people who do not have a car or who have a disability which prevents them from easily leaving their house. Please contact the Council’s Customer Services

Rubbish disposal Wanganui District Council does not have a rubbish dump or waste transfer station. Waste transfer stations and refuse removal companies are owned by private operators. The two operators are: Midtown Transfer and Recycling Depot (Waste Management)
Green waste Green waste can be disposed of at the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre or either of the waste transfer stations.
Kerbside refuse collections Urban
Domestic rubbish bags can also be dropped off at the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre for $3.00 each.
Rural The Council provides a weekly bag collection service to rural properties through Budget Waste. The service is a combination of kerbside pickups and pick-ups from refuse bag collection points. As with urban refuse collection, standard black garbage bags are preferred; however, only the pink Budget Waste sticker may be used in these areas.
Kerbside refuse collection is available in urban areas, operated by the companies mentioned above. These companies can also supply wheelie bins. Refuse bags must be accompanied by a prepaid pink (Budget Waste) or yellow (Waste Management) sticker. Prepaid stickers are available from the Council, dairies and supermarkets. Prepaid garbage bags, which do not require stickers, are also available at selected supermarkets (yellow = Budget Waste, orange = Waste Management).
