The Filippous reopened Guiseppe’s Italian Bakery with an eye toward rebranding. By Mark Berger Tim Filippou has been around food since he was 7 years old. He worked with his father when he owned a pizza and grinder restaurant in North Kingstown. Filippou learned the ins-and-outs of the food and restaurant industry and how to prepare some of the more popular menu items. It was something ingrained inside of Filippou from early on, that would lead him to his lifelong career. His latest venture is reopening Guiseppe’s Italian Bakery, located at 1101 Mineral Spring Avenue in North Providence. Along with his daughter, Nicolette, they offer the freshest in sandwiches, calzones, and pastries. Most of their food is made from scratch at the bakery, such as Filippou learned from his father many years ago. In the first several weeks since reopening, we have seen an increase in business. They envision that trajectory continuing upward as the weather continues getting warmer. “We have enjoyed a steady stream of customers since we opened,” Filippou said. “Much of our initial customer base has been through word-of-mouth advertising. We have a good lunch crowd and see people returning to order their favorites.” Among those “favorites” customers keep coming back for 10 Shop In RI

include calzones (particularly the pepperoni and cheese), spinach pies, and baklava. While there are some clear favorites, most items are not staying inside the display cases for very long. Filippou laughed at the notion of having a “typical” day. Sometimes, he will arrive at 8:00 AM to begin making his fresh dough for that day’s items. Other days, he might return after they close to get a jump on the next day and stay until 12:00 midnight. He employs a baker to assist with the breads and other items on their menu.

The situation for which the family secured their location was a “no brainer” opportunity. The facility became available after the previous owner left before the December holidays. Filippou and his family saw its potential and got the necessary information and permissions to begin their business on the very active Mineral Spring Avenue. They credit their landlord, Anthony Manzo, for their start. In addition to the space, Manzo donated a couple of menu boards and has lent advertising support to the Bakery, for which Filippou is very grateful. Besides the calzones, customers can also choose from a variety of salads, pizzas, hot and cold sandwiches, desserts, and drinks. All of them are made fresh and for variety, some of the options can change. Looking for a salad for lunch? Then, one can choose from either a tossed, Greek, or antipasto salad. Parmigiana grinders include chicken, veal, meatball, eggplant, or sausage (along with a few combinations of these fillings). Pizzas come in 10-inch, 14-inch, and half-sheet sizes. They also offer such specialty pies, ranging from meat lovers to “Nikki’s Greek Pizza,” that comes without sauce. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert! Their selection of cakes, brownies, and other delicious items are hard to ignore so bring home some unexpected treats for the family. People can also choose from fresh cannolis, zeppoles, and other delectable goodies. “I like to put out a little bit of everything,” Filippou said. “There is something here to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth.” If you do not have the time to sit inside, they offer takeout. Filippou said that he hopes to expand, as the state continues to open up from the pandemic. “We offer catering for most occasions. There will be more people gathering as the nicer weather gets here and the restrictions are eased. We can prepare a meat tray, a cannoli tray, or whatever else a customer requests. With birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and other important events coming, we strive to be the preferred bakery destination for all of your needs,” said Filippou. Another change that will come soon is the bakery’s name. Filippou kept the existing name when they purchased the bakery to maintain continuity. Soon, the Bakery will be known as Tim and Nikki’s Pizzeria and Bakery to better reflect the family business partnership. As a “Welcome to the Neighborhood,” the bakery is giving a 10 percent discount to anyone who mentions that they saw this story in the Shop in RI Magazine. BABY BELL PEPPERS WITH FRESH CORN STUFFING I came up with this crunchy appetizer a few years ago, when I needed a tasty bite for one of our summer parties. I wanted something fresh that highlighted the veggies of the season, so when I spotted these baby bell peppers in the supermarket, I got the idea. I get requests for the recipe every year. (I grow my own baby bell peppers, but when we’re talking about feeding a large party, it’s time to go to the supermarket! ) I went to Twitter for some help. Since I follow a number of chefs, I asked the question: I’m cooking for a real chef for the first time. What’s the #1 tip you can give me? Only one chef answered, but it was none other than Andrew Zimmern, and

Ingredients: * Baby bell peppers * 6 ears fresh corn, removed from the cob…or organic f rozen corn * 1/2 Vidalia onion, peeled, quartered, grilled, chopped * 1 cup mayonnaise * 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce (I use Frank’s Red Hot) * 6 oz. feta cheese or Queso * Fresco, crumbled * Juice of 1 lime * Pinch of white pepper * 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped 14 ShopInRI

he said simply: “Be yourself.” Be myself? Yeah…I think I can fake that! Cut the corn kernels from the ears, and sauté them very briefly in a little olive oil. Place them in a bowl and let them cool. Peel and quarter the Vidalia onion, and throw it on a hot grill with a little olive oil to get some nice grill marks on it, leaving the onion still crispy, not soft. If you’re cooking indoors, throw the quartered onion in a hot pan with a little olive oil, and cook it until you get some brown marks on it. Remove it, let cool, then place it in a food processor and pulse it until the onion is chopped into small bits, just smaller than the corn kernels. Add the onions to the corn. In a separate small bowl, combine the mayonnaise and the Frank’s Red Hot. Pour in the crumbled cheese and mix well. Pour this into the corn and onion bowl and mix well. Add the lime juice, white pepper and parsley to the bowl and mix well again. Cut the baby bell peppers in half lengthwise, and remove the seeds and membrane. Stuff the peppers with the corn mixture and garnish with cilantro or parsley. If you’re preparing this ahead of time, refrigerate the stuffed peppers until you’re ready to eat, but allow some time for them to warm up to a cool, not cold, temperature.

We have come a long way as an industry since March of 2020, when our restaurants were forced to suspend their on-premises dining operation and our hotels were nearly empty with travel and events at a virtual standstill. Although it feels like an eternity ago, our industry is not long removed from more stringent operational oversight, empty dining rooms, and vacant lodging facilities. While we are not yet fully back to where we would like to be, our industry is in a much, much better position today, than even a month ago. That being said, each hospitality business is unique, and how individual businesses chose to approach the pandemic was their prerogative, as long as they followed the CDC guidelines that were enforced during that time. Whether a restaurant owner decided to keep their dining room closed and only offer take-out, or a hotel operator preferred not to allow guests from “high risk states” to stay, as long as they followed the mandated public safety protocols outlined by our lawmakers in Rhode Island, there is no reason for those operators to be ostracized

We strongly believe that the businesses that make up our industry, from restaurants to hotels, and everything in between, share common goals. Those goals range from reopening at fullcapacity, to retaining and rewarding loyal staff, and of course, ensuring profitability. When we look at our businesses through an individual lens, we forget that our industry relies on the success of all its partners’ contributions. A booked hotel leads to a busy restaurant, and a busy restaurant helps liquor and food suppliers fulfill orders, so on and so forth - Rhode Island’s hospitality industry is truly an interconnected ecosystem. With that, each of us has an unspoken responsibility to our peers and colleagues to act as cheerleaders for our industry, using our individual resources and platforms to ensure its viability as a whole. At the RI Hospitality Association (RIHA), we advocate on behalf of Rhode Island’s entire hospitality industry, not just our members. The issues that affect our industry do not pick and choose who they impact; the consequences of increased restrictions, employee shortages, and health and safety concerns have had a ripple effect throughout every level of our industry. From corporate chain restaurants and hotels, to small familyowned businesses, no one was spared from the economic impact of the pandemic. Through our advocacy and philanthropic efforts, direct collaboration with state legislators, and targeted relief programs, we believe that RIHA has done its part in acting as the “voice of the industry.” The legislation we develop, present, and oftentimes see enacted into law is a direct result of conversations with our members, as well as extended industry operators, owners, and employees. We leave no stone unturned, and are always willing to lend an ear to anyone who needs one. Your voice is the most effective advocacy tool we have. No one knows the hospitality industry better than its business owners, operators, and workers. The Italian-born author and chef, Marcella Hazan, once penned the words “There is no such thing as ‘Italian haute cuisine’ because there are no high or low roads in Italian cooking. All roads lead to home, to la cucina di casa.” No truer words could be spoken when describing Maria Cucina’s, the newly reopened Italian restaurant housed in Providence’s iconic Italo-American Club on Broadway. Maria’s Cucina really IS home ~ home to those seeking the kind of Italian cuisine that only their Italian nonna can make. Sunday gravy simmering for hours on the stove, perfectly seasoned meatballs soaking in all that gravy, house-made pasta dishes, from the classic Carbonara, to the popular Frutti di Mare, and so much more. Evocative of the days when Sunday family dinners were commonplace, and when everyone in the neighborhood was treated like a brother or sister, aunt or uncle ~ this is what Maria’s Cucina is all about. Maria Costantino, the mother of Co-Owner Gregory Costantino, is the inspiration for this new restaurant in the city’s historic Federal Hill neighborhood. It was around Maria’s Sunday table, where her seven sons were taught the values of family, faith, and timeless, authentic, home-cooked food. When Gregory and Chris Spertini, the restaurant’s founder and other co-owner, were deciding what to name the restaurant, it was only fitting that they use her name as a lasting memory. Her

influence and legacy live on today in every dish that is served from the restaurant’s bustling kitchen. Spertini, who oversees all the restaurant’s many operations, along with Costantino, partnered together to open Maria’s namesake, Maria’s Cucina, in January of 2019. Both men have had illustrious careers and know the formula for success. Outstanding, memorable food. Impeccable hospitality and service. Consistency and accessibility so that customers know their loyalty is valued. An ongoing commitment to improving, refining, perfecting. These attributes are found in abundance at Maria’s Cucina, under the leadership of these respected business partners. Maria’s Cucina shares its space with the Italo-American Club, one of the oldest Italian clubs in the country. The restaurant occupies two floors of one of the city’s grandest old Victorian mansions on Federal Hill. The building, a former home built in 1897, is not only palatial, it is also an architectural marvel of its time – rich hardwood floors and paneling, sparkling crystal chandeliers, towering coffered ceilings, stained glass windows, and private, sunbathed rooms. When Spertini and his team took over Maria’s Cucina, they even uncovered exquisite murals hidden under three layers of wallpaper. No detail was spared in restoring this breathtaking showpiece. Though the restaurant’s fine linen-covered tablecloths

may make the dining rooms appear formal, the ambiance at Maria’s Cucina is far from stuffy. Like your grandmother’s own dining room, it is welcoming and inviting. “Pull up that extra chair and shimmy over, your cousins have arrived for Sunday dinner” ~ it’s that kind of feeling at this “hometurned-restaurant.” This is “fine dining” without the fine dining prices! Everyone who comes to Maria’s walks away talking about the menu prepared by the restaurant’s executive chef, Jay Harrington. Harrington was highly sought after by Spertini, who knew he wanted a chef who could cook the classics, but with a contemporary flair ~ that is exactly who he got. Chef Harrington is bold and creative, but he also knows what is “sacred culinary territory” ~ those tenderly nurtured gravies and traditionally-made pasta, seafood, and meat dishes. But it is his boldness and creativity that make his meals both interesting and unforgettable. Harrington is accompanied in the kitchen by his sous chef, the venerable Anthony Ianello, who has 40 years of experience in the culinary world. Together, they are a formidable team. Customers may love the chef ’s Vitello alla Milanese (the all-time favorite pan-fried breaded veal chop, topped with arugula, cherry tomatoes and parmigiano, and tossed in lemon vinaigrette) but the next time they come, they want to try the more non traditional Spaghetti alla Barbabietola from his Vegan menu (yes, there is a vegan menu at Maria’s Cucina!) This is a mouth-watering dish of house-made beet noodles, sauteed with pine nuts, fresh tomatoes, and basil, in a white wine sauce. WE SHARE HOPE IS DOING GOOD THINGS We Share Hope, a non-profit food rescue mission bases out of Rumford, RI, sets out to serve the underprivileged and under resourced with food and supplies through donations from their food bank, and their self-service market. As a leading food rescue mission in the state, they serve over 75 non-profit groups in Rhode Island, growing from a two-man operation to a staff of over 35 workers and volunteers. Below is an interview with Executive Director Johanna Corcoran on how their operation is run, how to receive donations, and get involved. What is the Goal and or Mission of We Share Hope? At We Share Hope, we strive to help individuals and families facing food insecurity by sharing what we are given with those who need it most in our community. We accomplish our mission in two ways: We provide food deliveries five days a week to non profit groups in Rhode Island who distribute food to their community members. In addition, we are home to Hope Market, a budget-friendly marketplace that provides goods at very low cost to under resourced communities. How was We Share Hope started? We Share Hope started in 2008 with two individuals distributing bread donations from the back of a car. Today, We Share Hope is one of the leading food rescue organizations in the state and has proudly served over 75 non-profit groups in Rhode Island. Hope Market is based on a ‘pay it forward’ concept: any revenue from the market powers the distribution side of We Share Hope and enables us to donate hundreds of pounds of food every week to local nonprofit agencies who are feeding their own communities. What do you feel is the biggest misconception about We Share Hope and Hope Market? Many people think they need to meet certain eligibility requirements to visit Hope Market. This is not the case; all are welcome to visit us, and we are happy to assist those new to the market with obtaining the items they need to feed themselves and their families.

What is Food Rescue exactly and is that what We Share Hope ultimately is? Food rescue, also called food recovery, is the practice of collecting shelf-stable or fresh, edible food that would have otherwise gone to waste from restaurants, grocers, and other food establishments. The food that we rescue is either excess inventory, does not meet the high cosmetic standards in the food industry, or is nearing the ‘best by’ date. We quickly transfer these items to nonprofit partners, and Hope Market. Food rescue is a ‘win-win’ because it gets food to those who need it most and reduces food waste, minimizing the amount of toxic emissions from food waste in landfills. Get a Head Start with Meal Prep Chicken

Ingredients • 1 extra large tortilla flatbread or lavash bread • 2 tablespoons Roasted Pepper Bruschetta • 5-6 slices cooked chicken breast about 3 ounces • Handful of arugula or spinach • 2 slices provolone cheese • 3-4 thin slices of tomato • 2 tablespoons Artichoke Bruschetta • 10 sliced kalamata or black olives • Sliced red onion • Balsamic glaze

Most grocery store delis use unleavened lavash flatbread for their wraps, but the lavash is hard to find for us regular folk. Instead, use an extra large tortilla for these wraps for the best success at rolling without tearing your wrap. Instructions Lay the tortilla or flatbread on a flat surface. Starting on the edge closest to you, layer a stripe of red pepper bruschetta about 1/2 inch inside the outer edge. Place the chicken slightly overlapping the bruschetta, then add a strip of arugula, then the provolone cheese and the tomato. Top with the artichoke bruschetta then the olives and sliced red onion and drizzle lightly with the balsamic glaze. Starting from the edge closest to you, fold the portion of the tortilla with the red pepper and chicken into itself, and fold the outer edges of the sides inward, then continue to tightly roll and wrap the sandwich. Slice the wrap in half and server, or cut the halves into even portions to serve as pinwheels. Make the day before or refrigerate for 2-3 days.

As a fitness instructor, I ask this question to all new clients: “What body part do you think I want to help you make the strongest?” The answers are always the same: biceps, quads, stomach, lower back, etc. My response is “No. What I intend to most help strenghten is your mind.” The reason for my answer is that I believe when you have a strong mind, anything and everything is possible. We all have different shaped bodies. We all want to look like the model or athlete we see on television. Truth is, most of what we see isn’t real. Are there some people with an almost perfect body? Sure, depending on whatever is considered as “perfect.”

I wish people could just accept and love who they are. This is the most attractive quality anyone can have. Beauty comes from within. I know, such a cliche, but so true. I have dealt with many people over the years in my business career, my fitness career, and life, in general. Confident people, not the most attractive people, get the guy or girl they are seeking. Confident people, not the most attractive people, get the promotion or job they are looking to secure. Confidence is beauty. This, along with kindness, is the epitome of the phrase, “beauty comes from within.”

I do not want to train anyone whose goal is to be “skinny.” I will work with clients to help them become healthy and to achieve their healthy weight, but I will not work or train anyone to be “skinny.” Again, confidence is what wins. Skinny doesn’t mean happy. Is it a different world when you are at a healthy weight? Yes, it is a whole different world, but this article is to instill in people’s minds that we are all different. We need to accept our best US and work with that. Stop striving to be perfect. The truth of the matter is that you already are perfect. that what you have is “your” perfect because believe it or not, there are many people who wish they had what you have. I know this is not easy, especially for those who work hard everyday to perfect their physicality. However, if you stop and really look at the big picture, what you are striving for may actually be harming you. Maybe not literally, but emotionally, for certain. Accept who you are, love who you are. Build and grow confidence within yourself and your world will improve. If you can do this, you will find peace.

I am a fitness instructor. Is exercise important to me? Absolutely yes, but do I want or expect people to think that exercise is all there is in life? Absolutely not. It is a piece of life. An important piece of life, but only a piece. You cannot obsess about being someone you are not. The people who appear to be perfect may not be as happy as you think. Speaking from experience, everyone has something they would like to change. Whether it be a job, a relationship, their past, etc., everyone has something. I wish I could change people’s way of thinking, but I know I cannot. However, I will keep preaching to my class and clients that exercise is about being healthy. The weight loss is a fringe benefit. RETIREMENT READINESS FOR WOMEN By Carrie McPherson Saving for retirement is never easy, but women in particular can face unique challenges. Statistics from a recent Morningstar special report on women and investing show why it’s important they make retirement planning a personal priority—and start as early as possible. The earnings gap is real. Over a lifetime, whether they have a high school education, a bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree, women earn, on average, significantly less than men with equivalent schooling. Consequently, many women have less income available to put toward their futures. Earnings peak earlier. On average, women’s earnings peak at age 44, while men’s earnings continue to climb until age 55. That means less income growth over a career lifetime for women.

4. Work longer. Every year you remain in the workforce and continue to earn a paycheck is one less year you need to tap your savings. If you enjoy what you do, stay in your career. If you face a mandatory retirement age, find other work for the income it provides.

Caregiving responsibilities lower women’s lifetime earnings potential. More women than men report having to reduce hours or quit working at some point during their careers to care for loved ones. Meanwhile, men keep earning.

5. Find a side gig. Some women boost their retirement savings by generating income through the gig economy. Consulting, teaching and sales are just a few ways to produce income to increase your bottom line.

Women live longer. With a higher average life expectancy, women need to fund more years of retirement despite earning less during their working years.

6. Make sound decisions when choosing your government benefit options. Claim your Social Security benefits at full retirement age (or later) to receive your maximum monthly benefit. Filing at an earlier age will result in a permanent reduction in benefits. Medicare is different: you must sign up during the limited enrollment window on either side of age 65 to avoid penalties. Since future medical needs and costs are so unpredictable, it’s generally recommended to also purchase a Medicare Supplement insurance plan, which helps pay for out-of-pocket costs such as co-payments, coinsurance and deductibles under Original Medicare.

Long-term care may be on the horizon. It’s estimated that 58 percent of women age 65 or older will need long-term care during their lifetimes. Assisted living and nursing home facilities can be quite expensive. Women of color face the greatest income disparities. As a result, one quarter of Black women over age 65 and 31 percent of Hispanic women over age 65 live in poverty. With these uphill challenges, it’s no wonder women are more likely than men to fall short of their retirement goals. And the pandemic hasn’t helped matters either, considering most job losses in 2020 occurred among women. Here are steps you can take to change this concerning pattern and enhance your own retirement readiness: 1. Put time on your side. The sooner you prioritize retirement planning, the better. Grow your nest egg with consistent contributions. Automatic deposits make it easy; simply identify the amount or percentage you want to save from every paycheck. Invested savings can grow over time through compound interest. 2. Seek income equality. Know your worth and advocate for fair compensation. Be willing to negotiate for salary increases. Consider moving into a higher-paying career if earnings are limited in your field. 3. Maximize your retirement plan contributions. Take advantage of the employer 401(k) contribution match if it’s available to you. WHY THE SUDDEN INTEREST IN INFLATION? By Edward Pontarelli

You may have noticed that the topic of inflation is getting more attention. Those who were around in the 1970s likely still remember when rapid rises in the cost-of-living were of great concern. But for those who are younger, the concept of an extended period of high inflation may seem strange to you as you have never experienced it. The conventional wisdom is that during periods of rapid economic growth, inflation is likely to pick up. There is speculation that the economic recovery underway now, in conjunction with dramatic stimulus measures by the federal government and the Federal Reserve, may set the stage for another bout of significant inflation. This would be a dramatic change. In the past nine years, the annual change in the cost-ofliving never topped 2.3 percent. The last calendar year when inflation was measured at more than 3 percent was in 2011. It last rose as high as 4 percent in 1991. By contrast, from 1974 to 1981, the cost-of-living soared each year by an average of 9.4 percent. In that eight-year span, the fundamental cost of living in the U.S. doubled. Inflation can take a toll.

When inflation is in check, it becomes more likely that the standard-of-living for individuals and families will improve. Interest rates tend to track with inflation trends, so lower cost-of-living increases usually keep interest rates down. That makes borrowing cheaper for purchases like homes and automobiles. By contrast, when the pace of change in the cost-of-living picks up, it makes most things more costly for consumers, potentially slowing economic activity. History indicates that high inflation can result in a more challenging investment environment. If interest rates track higher with inflation, the market value of bonds declines (bond prices and interest rates move in opposite directions). In the high-inflation period of the 1970s and early 1980s, stock markets struggled as well.

Understanding the inflation rate.

The most cited measure of inflation, the Consumer Price Index, weighs changes in prices for a basket of consumer goods and services. It helps give individuals and policymakers an idea of cost-of-living trends over time. The most important number focuses on “core” inflation, a measure of goods and services that eliminates cost changes for food and energy-related commodities. It is felt that components like food and energy are subject to wild fluctuations that can be caused by geopolitical developments or weather events. Because of their volatility, they are considered a less reliable barometer of broader economic trends. Why the concern today?

There is growing optimism that as the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines continues, the economy will gain steam. At the same time, economy is still getting a lot of support. The federal government has provided six trillion dollars of stimulus in the past year. This has come in the form of direct payments to individuals, enhanced unemployment benefits, special support programs for businesses and aid to local and state governments. Likewise, the Federal Reserve has kept interest rates at historic lows and purchased billions of dollars’ worth of bonds to help add liquidity to the markets. Will the confluence of a steady return to normalcy along with dramatic fiscal and monetary stimulus light enough of a fire in the economy to make inflation a bigger concern? Only time will tell, but it is an issue that bears close watching. Be careful not to overreact to short-term upswings in inflation, but it is always good to have a longterm plan in mind to respond to a changing environment. Alpacas Turn Hobbyist Into Entrepreneur By BRIAN LOWNEY

The animals are shorn once a year, usually in late April.

The farmer-entrepreneur sells the fashionable, all natural items at farmers markets throughout the region, and online. Coarser fibers are made into felt that is used to line winter boots.

The lifelong Swansea, Massachusetts resident started Moonlight Rose Alpacas more than eleven years ago, after retiring from the United States Department of Agriculture. He began with a foundation of seven colorful alpacas and now owns a large herd of 68 animals – 34 of each gender.

“The colder the winter, the faster the fiber grows,” Rose reveals, adding that because the past winter was unseasonably warm, there will be less fiber available for spinning this year.

Rose became interested in these furry creatures, which he describes as “a smaller cousin” to the llama and camel, after seeing a magazine advertisement and visiting some farms. According to Rose, Alpacas are physiologically similar to goats.

According to Rose, there are 22 colors recognized by the National Alpaca Association, a registration body similar to the American Kennel Club. All of Rose’s alpacas are registered and blood typed, which allows him to carefully plan matings according to pedigrees. The gestation period for alpacas is 11 months, and Rose discloses that multiple births are rare. “Alpacas have the unique ability to stop labor,” Rose discloses, revealing that females often resume the delivery once a bad storm passes. Alpacas range in price from several hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on their quality. The respected alpaca breeder adds that these unique animals were introduced to the United States from Peru in 1986, and today, there are more than 175,000 of these prized creatures living throughout the country. He notes that there are about 40 alpaca farms in Massachusetts and a few in Rhode Island. Alpacas are indigenous to the Andes and are raised in several South American countries by herdsmen, who also use the fiber to make clothing and blankets.

Climbing clears my mind and helps me focus. It’s a strategic sport, and gets endorphins flowing. 12:00PM - After rock climbing, I shower and get ready for the day. Ask An Expert The BIGGEST painting mistake I ever made…

My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www.LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. As a business owner, I do understand when coaching an employee through things, sometimes thoughts may cross their mind, as though I am one that doesn’t make mistakes. Every now and then I have one of them mention this to me as I am walking through something and I usually cannot help, but chuckle to myself. Whether they believe it or not, I tell them (and I REALLY mean it!) that I make more mistakes on a daily basis than probably all of our employees combined!! If I were to be asked what my biggest mistake in my actual painting days was, there would be several VERY good candidates!!! My biggest mistake as a painter, however, I would have to say occurred way back in the year 1995… I was just starting out in business and we were painting a new construction home. The home was sided in cedar clapboard. There were a ton of nail holes that had to be filled throughout the home. For some reason, I thought it would be a good idea to fill all the nail holes with caulk. The home was painted with a mediumtone olive color on the body. When the painting process was complete and I stepped back to admire our work, the house was covered in dark-colored dots, as EVERY nail hole that was filled was MUCH darker than the color all around it!! UGHHH!!! What was determined to be the best way to fix it, was to, literally, dig out the caulk from every single nail hole, spot 70 Shop In RI

prime the nail holes, fill all the nail holes with the proper putty, spot prime the putty that was put in, completely prime all of the siding, and then apply two coats of finish. As one might imagine, this was a VERY expensive problem to properly correct. To this day, I really don’t think the homeowner ever caught the mistake, as the crew jumped right on fixing things and the home looked beautiful in the end. My guess is the client just thought we had an EXTREMELY extensive prep process! In the course of my travels, I happen to pass by the home every once in a while and I always seem to just shake my head – this was CERTAINLY an experience I will NEVER forget, and hopefully, this lesson will help you avoid the same mistake!

Memorial Day RHODE ISLAND HONORS ITS HEROES ON MEMORIAL DAY 2021 The United States recognizes members of its armed forces on many days throughout the year to include its veteran community resulting from all six uniformed services: the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. Currently, its regular and reserve segments total approximately 0.75 percent of the population, which comprises more than two million men and women. Currently serving members are acknowledged on Armed Forces Day, observed on the third Saturday of May each year, while former service members are honored on Veterans Day, a national holiday, which falls on November 11th. The most significant time, when America takes time to commemorate their fallen (also a national holiday), occurs on Memorial Day. The following are some interesting facts about Memorial Day. Memorial Day was originally referred to as Decoration Day. The holiday was celebrated by “decorating” the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and more, thus, the name “Decoration Day.” The term Decoration Day gradually 80 Shop In RI

morphed into Memorial Day (a title which itself dated back to 1882), but the name change was only recognized in the 1960s. It was confirmed by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968, which moved the date from May 20th of each year to the last Monday in May, confirming it as a national holiday and making a three-day weekend in 1971. Many cities within the country assert to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. According to the Library of Congress, President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed Waterloo, New York, to be the ”Birthplace of Memorial Day,” referring to a celebration the town had in 1866. However, other places are known to have acknowledged the holiday earlier, and the location of where the first celebration occurred is still in question. Union General John A. Logan established the holiday. Although people were already decorating graves of fallen Civil War soldiers in an unofficial manner, General Logan classified Memorial Day as a holiday. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he famously said. Memorial Day wasn’t celebrated on the “last Monday in May” until relatively recently. When General Logan officially launched the holiday, he called for it to be observed on May 30th. After the Uniform Monday Holiday Act took effect in 1971, however, it was moved to the final Monday in May. It’s been thought that Logan may have selected May 30th because no other battle in history had fallen on that day. It’s typical for the United States president or vice president

to give a speech on Memorial Day. Traditionally, the speech is made at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. Prior to the official Memorial Day weekend, the 3rd U.S. Infantry also placed American flags in front of Arlington’s over 260,000 graves. Originally, only soldiers who had died in the Civil War were honored on Memorial Day. After WWI, though, the holiday started to include members of the American armed forces who died in any of our nation’s conflicts.

Memorial Day in Rhode Island 2021-Boots on the Ground-Newport In 2021, Memorial Day will be celebrated at Fort Adams in Newport, RI, after 2020’s cancellation of the annual Boots on the Ground Memorial display due to the coronavirus pandemic. Every year since 2016, Operation Stand Down Rhode Island has displayed more than 7,000 boots with flags in them, each one as an acknowledgement of a member of the U.S. military killed in the War on Terror. The 2021 display will feature a special, separate display honoring those who took their own lives due to post-traumatic stress

disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions. A placard is attached to each boot and displays the name and photo of the fallen soldier, along with biographical information, military branch, rank, and circumstances of death. The Memorial is updated each year to incorporate additional U.S. service members killed in the ongoing Global War on Terror. The boots are alphabetized and organized by states and U.S. Territories. This allows those with a personal connection to more easily locate a specific fallen hero’s boot. Many times, family, friends, and compatriots of the fallen can be seen solemnly viewing a particular boot and leaving a memento. Since its inception, over ten thousand visitors from all over the U.S. have visited during Memorial Day Weekend. During the first three years the Memorial was displayed at Roger Williams Park in Providence. In 2019, the Memorial was displayed at Fort Adams State Park in Newport. Fort Adams is one of the oldest military posts in the country. The organization is still looking for sponsors for this year’s display.
