Rhode Island Shellfish Co. Seriously Fresh Fish - From the Shore to Your Door By Jennifer Coates When Peter Caswell, the founder and owner of Rhode Island Shellfish Co., chose the catchphrase “Seriously Fresh Fish” to describe his West Warwick-based business, he wasn’t messing around. He wasn’t lying either. RI Shellfish Co. literally uses seafood straight off the docks, fresh out of the waters of the Atlantic. “Shore to Door” is their motto! Everything that Caswell sells, and everything he serves, is harvested or caught fresh every day. This is a promise he makes . . . and one that he keeps. RI Shellfish Co. was incorporated in 2016, soon becoming the realization of a passion and love that its owner Peter Caswell had had since he first began cooking the generation’s-old recipes of his cherished mother, Annie. As a lifetime Rhode Islander who spent much of his early life digging quahogs off the state’s bountiful coast, it was only natural that the culinary journey he started at the side of his mother would take him to this now popular take-out eatery in the city. In 2016, Peter received a USDA Grant of Inspection and built a commercial kitchen which he affectionately named “Annie’s Kitchen,” after his late mother. Thus was born RI Shellfish Co.

Today, RI Shellfish Co. is visited by loyal fans and newcomers alike. All come for Peter’s outstanding fresh shellfish and for his prepared dishes which, like the seafood and shellfish they are made of, are prepared fresh to go (though have no fear, many of these dishes are available frozen so you can keep them at home to satisfy your cravings at a later date!) Peter’s specialty: anything to do with his favorite, locallysourced quahogs. Caswell has long felt that Rhode Island’s lowly quahog has taken a proverbial “back seat” to the increasingly popular oyster. It has become one of Caswell’s personal missions to revitalize the quahog and to showcase its many varied preparations, including his famous “Stuffies.” When they first opened Rhode Island, Peter wanted to make a “true” Rhode Island Stuffie that represented the way that good seafood was made years ago. Using a recipe handed down from generation to generation, they set out on a journey to bring these Stuffies to market for the consumer to enjoy just Caswell remembered growing up here in the Ocean State.

They begin by hand shucking only the best local quahogs and grinding the meat to the perfect consistency. Next step involves combining the quahog meat with their very own pork sausage, delicious local vegetables, crackers, and spices. Using only the perfect size quahog shells, they stuff each one by hand with their perfectly seasoned stuffing. From there, each Stuffie is vacuum packed to ensure the freshest product reaches you, the consumer. In Peter Caswell’s words, “At Rhode Island Shellfish Company we pride ourselves in continuing this great seafood legacy that is ingrained in local tradition, and hope you enjoy our product.” Peter’s famous Stuffies join a diverse and crowd-pleasing array of other shellfish options that are available for take-out. While our industry is embracing this long-awaited return to normal, many operators are still facing one important challenge: staffing. Many of our industry’s workers are choosing to stay home, or take different types of jobs for a variety of reasons. From the still very real concern about COVID-19 and workplace safety, to

Unfortunately, as long as the worker shortage persists, our industry will be slow to fully recover. But, there is action being taken. Rhode Island’s recently-enacted workforce legislation allows those receiving unemployment benefits to get back to work and earn up to 150% of their unemployment insurance benefit amount before they are no longer eligible for unemployment. This legislation incentivizes workers to seek employment, as some of their unemployment benefits are now protected. However, as of May 23, a “search for work” requirement has gone into effect, which requires those collecting unemployment benefits to prove that they are actively searching for work and that they are not turning down offers for employment. To provide assistance to both job seekers and employers alike, the RI Hospitality Association (RIHA) recently launched the “Rhode Island Hospitality Jobs” website: a convenient resource for our members to post job openings and for job seekers to easily identify local opportunities in the industry through the use of a simple search tool. For employers, the website also offers additional resources to help recruitment efforts including: insight into what today’s employees are looking for, advice on how to attract Millennial and Gen Z workers, and tips on how to write an attractive and effective job posting. We both worked in food-related businesses.” The couple agree that throughout their past experiences, exemplary customer service was always paramount. “The first thing we wanted to instill in our shop was the service,” she continues. “It’s not just the food, which is important, but also the service. When you step inside, you leave the world outside and enter to enjoy a new experience and savor every minute.” The enthusiastic couple emphasize that they try to learn customers’ first names, learn their culinary preferences, and make each visit a memorable and fun-filled experience. “This is not a store,” Moritz tells, smiling. “This is our home.” Strenio currently makes more than 20 different varieties of homemade pasta. One recent daily offering included selections such as Herbed Ricotta Cheese ravioli, Asparagus & Prosciutto ravioli with

Parmesan & Lemon, Linguine, Bucatini, Tagliatelle Garganelli, Rigatoni, Conchiglie, and Creste di Gallo with whole grain.

Moritz shares that she is grateful for the support that the store continues to receive from the community and from throughout the region.

“Another favorite is corn and polenta ravioli,” Moritz shares. “This is a very popular summer ravioli. The corn is sweet and the fresh herbs are delicious. It’s to die for.”

“Ninety percent of our customers tell us that they haven’t bought boxed pasta in the three years since we first opened,” she reveals. “They tell us that the shop has elevated pasta to a new level for them and that they enjoy buying fresh pasta that was just made.”

The shop owners emphasize that they welcome customers’ suggestions and enjoy learning about new products. “We are always trying to expand our offerings and changes are made according to the season,” he says. “We try to pay attention to what our customers prefer and we also keep our cheeses local.” In addition to the fresh pastas, the shop makes fresh mozzarella and pizza dough daily, and recently began producing pints of homemade gelato with a variety of delicious flavors. “We wanted to have something else and gelato was the perfect dessert,” Moritz tells. “We wanted to have a selection of appetizers, pasta, and dessert. Our customers can now bring home a complete meal to prepare at home.” The shop owners also sell fresh bread from Seven Stars Bakery on weekends, delicious biscotti from J. Pace and Sons in Boston, and cannoli with a choice of chopped pistachio nuts or chocolate shavings.

According to Moritz, the shop also has an interesting selection of pantry items, including some locally made sauces, including a marinara sauce made by Karen Green of Secrets in the Kitchen. “Her sauce is just amazing,” Moritz says. Another favorite found at Prica Farina Pasta Company is Quito’s “Zuppa Sauce,” made locally at Hope and Main in Warren, and developed at the well-known restaurant in Bristol. The “Giardiniera,” produced at Kitchen Garden Farm in Sutherland, Mass., contains a spicy pickled mix of crunchy garden vegetables and has quickly become a popular item for shoppers who visit the shop regularly from as far as Worcester and the Boston area. It’s a universal fact that the most popular way to bring people together is with food. Everyone loves a delicious meal, and sharing one with those we endear is commonly something that people most enjoy doing together. Summer months in Rhode Island have historically provided a chance for people to bond over food, while creating pleasant memories.

By Julia Romano As we are all too well aware, the COVID-19 onslaught took from us more than we ever could have imagined. With no prior warning, the coronavirus health debacle has prevented us from coming together, even in the outdoors, where in Little Rhody, we look forward to and even crave doing during the summer months. Operation Warp Speed has enabled the country to be very close to putting the pandemic behind us, taking off the face masks, and breathing in fresh air. This is especially true in the sense of being able to congregate with friends and family and returning to spending time together savoring our favorite fare, while thinking about anything but the health crisis of the last eighteen months. When it comes to summer socializing and food, some of the most mouth watering favorites are cooked over a grill in many backyard barbecues. Barbecue (or barbeque) (BBQ) is a term used with significant regional and national variations to describe various cooking methods which use live fire, coal, and smoke to cook the food. Pork, beef, and chicken are grilled to perfection, while basted with one’s own spices and sauces, creating juicy, tender barbecue. 26 Shop In RI

There is no concrete information about who first thought of the notion of BBQ. The word barbecue has pretty much the same meaning across all languages. Even in Hindi, the word barbecue means meat that has been grilled in a highly seasoned sauce, according to the Hindi-English dictionary online. The word “barbecue” is believed to have originated from the Taino Indian word “barbacoca,” referring to a tool used for cooking over the open flame or the term “sacred fire pit.” Other historians have said that the word could have also come from the French expression “barbe e queue” - which translates literally as “whiskers to tail.” In the days of Imperialism and exploration, it’s likely that French explorers took part in different types of skewering and kabobs. During that time, it was commonplace for French people to gather around a fire, eating some type of critter on a stick that we would cringe at today. In some countries like the Philippines, street vendors will actually now take the bits of food we don’t typically eat, such as the innards, and fry them up over an open flame as a tasty snack. Enough said about that! Barbecue (or spelled barbeque, in different areas)

became a favorite food of Americans in the late 1900s, when ranchers made their way with their cattle across the Midwest. Cowboys didn’t slaughter their own cows for themselves, but saved most of the good meat for their customers, restaurants, and butcher shops. They used the leftovers, which were the tougher parts of the animal, and cooked them for their own meals. This meat was so tough that it had to be cooked for hours and hours on end in order to be tender enough to eat. To understand BBQ’s origins in America, we have to take into account African American history. In the Deep South of America, African Americans who were usually only given leftovers to eat after a hard day’s work, created deep barbecue pits that worked to soften the meat by cooking all day, creating the most flavorful long-cooked meat in the country, such as pulled pork. Today, we can’t imagine BBQ without this classic dish, even though it was born out of poverty and the innovation of African Americans throughout early American history. Barbequing history is a fascinating subject because cultures all over the world have had different types of barbequing throughout time and within each culture, there are different barbecue sauce styles by region. Many BBQs include ribs (pork or beef), pulled pork, and chicken, with side dishes including beans, potato

salad, corn on the cob, and coleslaw. • The most popular holidays for barbecuing are: July 4th (76 percent), Memorial Day (62 percent), and Labor Day (62 percent). • The most popular flavors of BBQ sauce are hickory, followed by mesquite, honey, and then spicy-hot. • BBQs have been a White House tradition since Thomas Jefferson. Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th president of the United States, hosted the first BBQ at the White House that featured Texas-style barbecued ribs. Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter hosted a “pig pickin’” for about 500 guests, including visiting foreign dignitaries. Ronald and Nancy Reagan, also, were avid barbecuers who entertained with BBQs at their ranch. • The largest attendance at a BBQ was 45,252 people at an event organized by Estado de Nuevo Leon (Mexico) at Parque Fundidora in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, on August 18th, 2013. • BBQ competitions have been taking place since at least 1959. The first one is believed to have taken place in Hawaii just a few months after it became a state, and was only for men. Twenty-five men entered the cook-off, competing for the grand prize of $10,000 (about $80,000 today). There have also been television shows featuring people cooking up their best BBQ recipes to compete for significant prizes.

PROS AND CONS OF CAFFEINE By: Susan Gazerro There is so much controversy about caffeine. Is it good for you? Is it bad for you? Does it help you to lose weight? Is it bad for your heart? There are so many questions. I decided to do my own research, as I do drink one or two cups of coffee each day so I wanted to find the truth! The first article I came across was very positive. It clearly stated that caffeine can improve memory, decrease fatigue, improve your mental functioning, and study after study showed that coffee can improve your shortterm memory and speed up your reaction times. This was all according to a study presented in 2005, at the Radiological Society of North America.

Many students have used coffee, soda, or energy drinks to caffeinate themselves while studying and taking exams or just to stay awake for a long day of lectures. Coffee has become such a staple of everyday life that you can barely go a block before finding a coffee shop. This is especially true here in the Northeast. We have a coffee shop on every corner. Every other week, an article comes out either praising caffeine for its health benefits or criticizing its side effects. So, should you stop drinking coffee or should you invest in a coffee machine? Let’s go back to those previous pros and cons. Pro: Energy

Another article I read had more pros than cons, as is shown below: • Pro: Energy • Con: Stopping caffeine causes withdrawal symptoms. • Pro: Caffeine is not addictive. • Con: Interferes with sleep • Pro: Long term health benefits • Pro: Not just for coffee lovers • Con: Caffeine has different strengths in different products. • Pro: Coffee is widely popular in social settings.

The reason most people are so dependent on coffee is because it gives them energy. This often translates to better performance at school and work, and moderate caffeine intake can even improve mental health. Con: Stopping caffeine causes withdrawal. Caffeine withdrawal is real and symptoms range from the “Monday morning blues,” to headaches and muscle pain.

Pro: Caffeine is not addictive! I’ve read many articles proclaiming that caffeine is a drug controlling the sheeple of today, but the good news is, the widespread belief that caffeine is addictive is just a myth! While it shares some characteristics with addictive substances, caffeine does not lead to the harmful effects and behaviors associated with addictive substances. Con: Interferes with sleep. Consuming caffeine within 6 hours of your bedtime has been shown to disrupt sleep. Getting enough sleep is already a problem for many people and if caffeine isn’t already part of the problem, it certainly won’t help. (On the other hand, some claim that drinking a cup of coffee before a power nap has great results!) A power nap is only 10 or 15 minutes. This has been shown to give you more energy as opposed to taking an hour long nap or longer.

Pro: Coffee is widely popular in a social setting. Getting a cup of coffee or tea is great low-cost activity for a short work meeting or getting to know someone. Cafes are also a convenient place to study, work, or hang out. Con: The cost adds up.

Pro: Not just for coffee lovers

If you’re buying a beverage every weekday, even if it’s a small black coffee, the cost will add up fast! Making coffee at home is often cheaper but, depending on what type of machine you have and what coffee you buy, your monthly caffeine allowance could surprise you. I once listened to a financial advisor discuss how to save money. One of the first things she suggested to cut out was buying coffee. She was saying “stop drinking coffee” because we don’t realize how much money we spend and could be saving if we didn’t buy it every day. Some fancy coffee drinks can run between $5 and $10 dollars. If you are buying these daily, that adds up.

Caffeine now comes in many forms for those who don’t enjoy the taste of coffee. You can get your dose in teas, sugary lattes, and even chocolate!

I hope this has helped you make a decision (or at least justify what you’ve already decided) on how much caffeine you want to consume!

Pro: Long term health benefits. Contrary to the belief that coffee causes long-term harm to your health, studies have found that regular coffee drinkers had lower risks of cardiovascular disease, liver cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Type 2 diabetes, and more.

Con: Not all caffeine is equal. Most studies about the health benefits of coffee refer to black coffee. The sugar and fat in lattes, sodas, energy drinks, and caffeinated candy bars are not good for your overall health, especially on a regular basis. And while tea has its own benefits, it does not share all the perks of coffee and doesn’t contain nearly as much caffeine.

DOING GOOD BY DONATING STOCK By: Carrie McPherson

Like many investors, you may own shares of stock (or other assets like mutual funds) that have appreciated in value given the generally favorable environment for the markets in recent years. If the stock is held in a taxable account, it means that a decision to sell shares at some point in the future may result in a taxable gain. One option to consider is gifting those appreciated shares to qualified charities. This may provide a tax benefit for you and it could result in a larger gift for the receiving organization as well. Weighing your options Donating stock rather than cash makes the most sense if it has been held in a taxable account for longer than a year and it has appreciated in value. It also may be best if you were already considering selling that stock position.

Consider a situation where an individual wants to take a stock valued at $2,000 and use it to fund a donation to a qualified charity. In this example, we’ll assume the stock was purchased 10 years ago for $1,000 and is now valued at $2,000. The donor can proceed in one of two ways: Option A The donor sells the stock, realizing a capital gain of $1,000. Assuming the gain is subject to the top long-term capital gains tax rate at the federal level (20%) the federal income tax on the gain is $200; and could be more when considering any state taxes. That leaves only the after-tax value of the proceeds from the stock sale (approximately $1,800) available to donate to the charity. Option B Instead of selling the stock, the individual arranges to donate the stock to a qualified charitable organization. In this way, no stock sale occurs while the individual owns it, avoiding the federal capital gains tax. Ownership of the full $2,000 value of the stock transfers to the charity. The organization can sell the stock at any time without any tax consequences given its tax-free status. The donor may be able to claim the full $2,000 value of the stock as a charitable contribution for tax purposes. The advantages of donating stock In this example, it is clear that there are several advantages to donating stock directly to the charity rather than liquidating the shares first and donating the proceeds in cash: 1. A long-term capital gains tax liability is avoided by not having to sell the stock first.

2. The net value available to donate to charity is larger by directly gifting stock rather than liquidating it first and donating the after-tax cash proceeds. 3. The larger value of the donation means the available tax deduction for the gift is larger as well.

In spite of his medical diagnosis, this Johnston, RI, native, without question, possesses the type of drive that prevents him from never ever giving up, and instead, he is putting all of his energy and efforts into making a difference by leaving behind a legacy in writing a book about his life, called “LEGENDARY SPEAKING,” written by accomplished author Joseph Broadmeadow. This book will cover Billy’s humble beginnings through his trials and tribulations to his breakthrough into radio, television, and also his acting career. Billy has interviewed and worked with over 350 celebrity athletes and entertainers throughout his career. The annual scholarships from the foundation are his way of giving back to society by awarding young men and women of his alma mater, who, like Billy, value hard work, and as a result, excel in their studies, as well as outside of school. The scholarships will also require eligible students to participate in sports and be a contributor to the public via community service. To accomplish the goals of the foundation, Billy has been working aside a dedicated team of professionals so as to acquire fiduciary donations that will lead to a culminating endowment goal of $1 million in the foundation. By creating this foundation, Billy’s principles and values will leave a legacy for years to come. Throughout his life, Billy has developed a tremendous number of friendships with people who continue to be supportive and have been vitally instrumental in helping him attain his

I attended the Commencement for the Class of 2021 for Saint Raphael Academy on Sunday June 13th at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence, RI. Listening to the Salutatorian address by Isabella Calise, I was extremely impressed not only by her accomplishments but also by her presence, confidence and her loving personality that just can’t help put a smile on my face. Her achievements are astounding and I felt this bubbly senior should be recognized for all her hard work and determination. LA: The list goes on & on for what you have achieved over your four years of high school. Tell me what awards you’ve won, extracurricular activities you’ve been in. IC: I was on the Lasallian Youth Leadership Team for 4 years. A community outreach leader. I helped students find community service opportunities near them and I got to work and talk to a lot of people that I really enjoyed. I did Mock trial for 3 years where I served as an attorney and it brought me into the courtroom and assured me that’s what I wanted to do in the future. I did Drama for 2 years which included three plays which helped me get out of my shell. I was Captain of the Golf Team for 3 years where I played as an independent. I was the first female golfer in the history of Saint Rays! I was Editor-in-chief for the Saint Sentinel school newspaper, which was my favorite leadership role. I love to write and edit. I love to “Be in charge” so it was the perfect position for me. It was a role I had worked for and really happy to do. I was the Student Ambassador for 4 years where I spoke on the radio for open houses, volunteered for open houses, made instructional videos and gave private tours. I was Class President my Junior & Senior years. I am a member of the National Honor Society, RI Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society, International Thespian Honor Society, Moore Scholars, Summa Cum Laude. Now what made you finally decide on Boston College and what do you plan to study? IC: Well, my dad worked in law enforcement so I always had familiarity with the justice system. When I was in middle school learning about the constitution and government it peaked my interest. I was always told growing up that I would make a great lawyer because I “Had to know the answer to everything” I knew I wanted to be a lawyer by age 11. I want to major in Political Science. I feel political science encompasses not just government but also the people. I’m interested in how government shapes people. Boston College is great for this major because they have a political science curriculum that is really open to what YOU want to get out of it. I really like the flexibility of BC. LA: What do you think makes you stand out from all the other salutatorians?

IC: I am a huge people person. There are a lot of people that make up my success and I recognize that. I want to be known not just for my academic achievements but also that I am a good people person. I try to treat everyone well. I’m not just all brains. I have a good smile too! LA: You definitely have a smile that lights up a room! What has been the highlight of your senior year? IC: It has to be Prom. It felt the most normal and I know that all my hard work paid off. It all came together, being part of every bit of the planning process I think prom was the highlight because I got to enjoy it. It was a milestone that I felt so privileged to celebrate and be a part of. You don’t always get to see your hard work pay off. To know you put your heart and soul into something and see other people enjoy it. Seeing it all come together and have a great time. LA: Who gave you the best advice and what did they say? IC: My father. He said “Work for yourself because you’re what will get you through life” Something I always reflect on is that the best work you can do is for yourself. If you’re working for everyone else in life then what are you doing for yourself? I’ve done all of these accomplishments and it’s great to think I did it for myself because I wanted to work this hard. LA: I knew you were going to say your dad! Describe a dramatic experience that has changed your life. IC: Growing up until the age of ten I wanted to be a vet. Then one night I got attacked by a German Sheppard and it bit off my ear. I had two surgeries and looking back on it I feel everything happened for a reason. I like to think I had that experience

for a reason. Why did God let this happen? It was very traumatic. It was a lot for a ten year old kid to go through. I think of it as a way of God turning my course of life. LA: What is your greatest fear and have you ever had to face it? IC: I would have to say working your absolute hardest and having it not work out for you. Am I going to flop? Freshman year my dream was to go to Harvard and be Valedictorian and neither of these things happened but I faced that fear and realized that things happen for a reason. God doesn’t always give you what you want. He gives you what you need. LA: Is there someone that you will never forget? IC: My grandfather. There are few people in your life that are actual angels. They couldn’t do anything wrong. Everything that comes out of their mouth sounds like it was spoken directly from heaven. I will never forget him because he’s always been my biggest supporter and always given the best advice.

LA: What advice do you have for incoming freshman? IC: “Work for yourself ” LA: Ok Bella, last question. It’s a big one. What dreams do you have for the world of tomorrow? IC: I hope that everyone grows in understanding that the world is so complex. Experiences are unique to each individual that you do not see. I think if everyone took the time to understand what another person was going through whether you agree with them or not. The world just needs to understand each other before we act against each other. Isabella or “Bella” Calise that she is called by her peers has made an impression on me. Enough to make me write my July article on her. Besides everything she has accomplished, which is over the top, she is humble, outgoing, generous and a friend to everyone. I have spent quite a bit of time with Bella this year as she was the “Little Red Head Girl” in the virtual play You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown that she was in with my daughter who played Lucy. Bella is wise beyond her years and has become not only a friend to my daughter but myself as well. Boston College is gaining a “Top of the Class” student and I can not wait to see her fly.

Why Do Deck Stains Peel?? My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www.LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Deck stains are perhaps THE most challenging product to adhere long term to any surface on the exterior of anyone’s home. Why is that? Well, there are a few factors involved, which also tend to be intertwined with each other. Let’s start off with the obvious where most deck stains are not able to be applied to all six sides of a piece of decking once it is in place. If this type of treatment is not done when the deck is initially installed, it would be pretty much impossible to do afterward. If the deck is not sealed on its underside and butt ends, moisture (both when it rains or snows & natural moisture that emanates from the ground below the deck) can easily be absorbed into the unsealed portions of the wood and loosen up any coatings that may be on the sealed portions of the deck as the deck dries out. If this process occurs enough, it will do so to the point where the coatings will start to peel. One overwhelming fact of this whole conversation, is that the majority of decks do not have wood that is super receptive to receiving ANY type of coating. In fact, the harder the wood (mahogany, Ipe, etc.), the more challenging it will be to get any type of product to properly absorb into it; even pressure treated wood, as soft as it is in comparison to the harder types of decking, is not easy to get stains to properly penetrate. Unless the deck surface is roughed up enormously (glassblasting is the only true process I am aware of that 100% allows for this), there is a shot that the pores of the decking are not open enough to comfortably receive whatever stain product is being applied to them. Simply sanding a deck is not necessarily the complete answer because although it is a necessary part of the surface preparation process, if not done correctly, can actually tighten up the grain of the wood TOO much. 68 Shop In RI

Because of this, unless someone is willing to undertake the expense of glassblasting their deck, I typically advise folks to use as thin a stain as they are ok with using along the thought process that the thinner the stain, the easier it is going to be to penetrate the wood. This may be counterintuitive to other information that is out there, but in 25+ years wrestling with these types of projects, this is what we have found to work best. When staining a deck, one should be prepared to put a maintenance coat on it yearly if need be. Depending on individual situations, deck coatings absolutely could last more than 3 years, but should not be banked on to do so. Having a deck with any type of coating system associated with it, is not for the faint of heart. Decks can be beautiful centerpieces of one’s home, if they are not properly maintained however, they can develop into an eyesore that is the bane of existence for many a homeowner.

Toyota of Smithfield continues asking the public and companies that either own or lease vehicles to trade them in for more efficient models to offset the current used car shortfall. General Manager John Durrani seeks the community’s help in bringing their used cars and reap some dealer incentives as their reward. “We are now giving anyone who comes in with their used or certified pre-owned cars an additional $1,000 over book value,” he said. “There isn’t a better time for anybody to trade in their cars. Your trade is worth more than it ever has before, and it’s worth more than its ever going to be worth.” Inventory continues to be problematic for dealers. The dealership is on back order for at least another six weeks on some models. Durrani said the market has been “pretty crazy”. With few cars on the lots, the on-going call for trade-ins have become crucial. Durrani said with stimulus checks still arriving in people’s mailboxes, that creates opportunities for people to either purchase a new vehicle or one of the few remaining used cars. He added the ask continues to mount as the demands increases. “There is a strong need for used vehicles, but we simply don’t have the inventory to accommodate them,” Durrani said. To help facilitate the need for more certified, pre-owned vehicles onto their lot, Toyota of Smithfield also offers 115% of the book value for any used cars.
