Whether you’re of Italian descent or simply love seafood, these ideas will help you host an unforgettable Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve. Italians love to be with family and even moreso, love to eat good Italian food. Holidays are perfect times to show your family how much they are loved as you create a feast that will knock their socks off. The Feast of the Seven Fishes, also known as Festa dei Sette Pesci or La Vigilia, is celebrated on December 24. This Christmas Eve celebration kicks off the holiday festivities with a huge dinner consisting of seven courses of fish and seafood. The Feast of the Seven Fishes tradition stems from the Roman Catholic practice of abstaining from meat the day prior to religious holidays, which currently is typically reserved for Fridays during Lent. In earlier days, Italians refrained from meat and celebrated Christmas Eve by pulling out all the stops and incorporating fish into a large meal. Over time, this overthe-top meal turned into a custom that many Italian-American families look forward to each

Christmas Eve. Below are some ideas to impress and satisfy your guests. Appetizers - Shrimp Cocktail (don’t forget the cocktail sauce and horseradish for some heat) - Clams Casino - Clams on the half shell - Fried Smelts - Stuffed Quahogs A cool, fresh salad is the perfect way to break up a multi-course meal. Calamari and snail salad are very traditional dishes for this celebration. Along with the shrimp cocktail, clams casino, and fried smelts, I order these salads from my favorite local seafood store and always have plenty of tabasco sauce and lemons on hand to add some zest to these dishes. The feast continues with flavorful seafood pasta. Some sure-to-please options are linguine with clams in a white sauce, or for a dish that is much richer, my family loves linguine with lobster in a pink vodka sauce. I always make both to ensure all of my guests are satisfied.

By Will Demers The smallest state has a capital city that has a smaller downtown area, it’s a fact. But that doesn’t detract from the fact that our fair city has a variety of places to go and see theatre, art, concerts and get some fantastic food. And when someone says the word “pub” it sort of conjures images of dark wood, beer, french fries and sports on flat screen TV’s. Every city has one; or two or even three. But on an inconspicuous side street close to the heart of the city is one of those places that is sort of a “best kept secret” although probably the local college students know of it more than the casual diner (it’s located across from a popular hangout bar.) “G Pub” is located in a sub level but large space flanked with some of that dark wood, seventeen plus television screens, game tables and a whole lot of places to sit and eat, watch, or play. It speaks comfort, and, possibly on a busier night than my companion and I attended, more upbeat and fun to see what goes on in a larger (most of Providence’s pubs are smaller by comparison) venue with a young vibe. Opened back in 2014, the Pandemic closed this venue in 2020 along with so many other restaurants in the area; there had been some stops and starts in reopening this particular venue until October, and happily has returned to the lineup of places to visit this Fall. Settling into our seats and greeted by the friendly staff at the bottom of the long staircase, we observed our surroundings. An expansive bar spans most of the far end of the room, two or more folks seemed to be ready to whip up your favorite concoction or draft a beer or six. High top tables aren’t far away from the bar and that 14 Shop In RI

area abuts the main dining room, which consists of booths at the far right, rows of free standing tables down the middle and a banquette for more seating. The far end of the room away from both the bar and dining area “sports” those game tables, more high tops and what could possibly be a private area for functions. It was a pre-opening night for us so the crowds were nonexistent but as we checked out the new menu things were getting a little more crowded. Our kind, friendly server greeted us and was incredibly attentive and eager to offer advice on the menu, as well as my choice of wine. I chose a Rose (Anchor & Hope, a RI rose) $9 which she allowed me to sample beforehand, and it fit the bill perfectly. My friend selected something more classic, a Vodka with soda water. But if it’s a beer you wish, of course there are more than enough choices. For appetizers the fare is a mix of predictable and surprising; we chose Crab Cakes $16 which were delicious and accompanied by a roasted pepper aioli as an excellent accompaniment. But the Crispy Brussel Sprouts $10 were the star attraction: hot, crispy and slightly spicy with the kimchi vinaigrette lining the plate, so good!

For entrees there is truly something for everyone. Short Ribs, Fish and Chips, Bangers and Mash (an English favorite, I was tempted) and Filet Mignon. I chose the Grilled Miso Salmon $26 and was very glad I did. Light, savory with a touch of saltiness and delicious mushrooms in an orange ginger broth with noodles. My companion wisely chose a G Pub Burger $16 and left absolutely nothing on his plate! Four items tried and all of them rather exceptional for “pub” food, actually several of these menu items wouldn’t be out of place in a casual fine dining venue. It’s certainly a testament for the creators of this lovely menu which is filled with surprises. Currently the venue is closed on Monday and Tuesday, open the rest of the week and as always, whether Pandemic or not, it pays to let any restaurant know you’re coming so call ahead or make a reservation! It lets any business know how to staff for the night and provide the best service they can but we’re sure that all walkins are quite welcome. recent history, and despite attempts to incentivize and attract workers, the issue persists. For a public-facing industry such as ours, the pandemic poses a particularly difficult problem to solve. We cannot make the virus go away, and despite our best attempts to curb its spread and ramp up our hygiene and sanitization efforts, we cannot quell the fears that many prospective and existing industry workers still have.

It is really hard to believe that we are closing in on the two-year anniversary of the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. While some are more comfortable that the virus is largely contained, others are still fearful, and we cannot ignore the lasting effects this publichealth crisis has had on how we live our lives. From continued mask-wearing and social-distancing to avoiding crowded public places and being hyper-aware of every cough, sneeze, and sniffle you hear, everyone is learning how to be “normal” again. The same can be said for the hospitality and tourism industries - their workers and patrons. As restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions work to instill consumer confidence in the safety and enjoyment of their offerings, there is still a large contingent of consumers who have not returned to their pre-COVID rituals and routines, in an effort to limit their potential exposure to the virus. Consequently, there are a host of additional factors that are making a robust sector return incredibly challenging. Adequate staffing continues to affect nearly every industry, from hospitality and tourism, to retail, medical, law enforcement, and more. People are quitting their jobs at higher rates than in any time in

Coupled with staffing shortages is the concerning rate of inflation, which has steadily risen in recent months. From disrupted supply chains to rising labor costs, rent, and inventory pricing, business owners are spending money they do not have, just to stay open. If costs continue to skyrocket, though, many of these businesses will find themselves in unsustainable business models. Loyal customers are thinking twice about what they deem to be “frivolous” spending, and operators are spending more money to run businesses that make less revenue than they did two years ago. Our industry has a big challenge heading into 2022. After an exhausting two-year stretch, how will we lay the foundation to build a recovered hospitality industry, despite not having the requisite building materials? What is the barometer of success for the hospitality industry in 2022? In my mind, it is composed of economic relief through the federal government that will allow restaurants, hotels, and other industry businesses to stay afloat, despite rising operating costs. Next, we need to solve the supply-chain issue that is affecting every aspect of how we do business right now. Finally, bolstering our workforce through training, education, and incentivization is vital to our industry’s success. With vaccination rates inching higher and higher, and the spread of the virus slowing down, it is my hope that jobseekers begin to turn to our industry again for meaningful, flexible, and rewarding career opportunities. While our profit margins may be lower than in years past, our morale should be higher than it has been at any point during the pandemic. A new year is coming, and with it comes the opportunity to restore and strengthen the hospitality industry. The year 2021 was a learning year; there were points of progress and unexpected setbacks, but I hope we can leverage the lessons learned to 2022, the year we truly turn things around.

Water Street Kitchen & Bar opened this past July with the intent to be a restaurant that stays open during the winter months. Offering brunch every Saturday and Sunday, and “buck a shuck” raw bar happy hour every Tuesday and Thursday, this place has something to offer for all palates. WIth gorgeous views, a menu with delicious options, and a sprawling second floor dining room perfect for events and fine dining, Water Street Kitchen is a much-needed addition to East Greenwich. When did Water Street Kitchen & Bar open and what is the theme of this restaurant? We opened on August 1st, 2021. Water Street is a waterfront restaurant specializing in seasonal food that uses locally sourced, fresh ingredients. Our offerings range from fresh fish, prime cut steaks, and a raw and sushi bar. What differentiates this waterfront restaurant from the other waterfront restaurants in East Greenwich? The quality of our food and amazing wine list definitely set us apart from the other area restaurants. Chef Jim Colleran produces some of the highest quality composed dishes in East Greenwich, and we have a wine list that pairs very well!

Steve Anderson Based on a post we saw on your company Instagram, we see your head chef has great experience. Will he continue to make sure the restaurant ethos remains with working with local, Rhode Island vendors?

We want them to feel relaxed. We want them to take some time to enjoy some of the best views in East Greenwich, while enjoying perfectly executed food, with a glass of wine or craft cocktail.

We shop locally whenever possible. Jim has built a career on building relationships with local vendors and will continue to use these vendors with Water Street.

The buzz around town is that you offer some great cocktails and have some of the best mixologists on staff. Tell us about your standout cocktails and why people will love them.

Most waterfront restaurants in East Greenwich close for the season. What makes Water Street Kitchen & Bar want to stay open year-round?

Our bar manager is very good at creating a list that matches the season. He is also very good with staying on top of the trends of distilled spirits and craft beers. This, in turn, makes our seasonal cocktail menu fun and interesting. Our current list has a Pumpkin Float, Pama Mule, and Maple Cider Old Fashion.

We feel that East Greenwich needs an upscale casual restaurant year-round. We are reasonably priced and we think that today’s consumers will see great value in the quality we offer. If you could explain your restaurant in one sentence, what would that sentence be? Water Street is a premier waterfront restaurant with amazing food, great service, and breathtaking views of Greenwich Cove. How do you want customers to feel and what do you want them to experience when they are dining in your restaurant?

What would you say to someone who hasn’t dined at your restaurant whom you would want to come in? It’s an experience like no other in East Greenwich. Is It Okay to Indulge in the Array of Different Foods During the Holidays? By Susan Gazerro

Allowing yourself to indulge or cheat over the holidays really shouldn’t impact your weight at all. Giving up on your healthy habits for just one day isn’t going to cause weight gain, although you’ll probably feel bloated and tired. In the days leading up to the holidays, especially Thanksgiving, social media, television, newspaper, and magazines are flooded with advice on how to not overeat. They reiterate how to stay healthy when you’re tempted by carbs, salty and sugary foods like stuffing, sweet potato casserole, and pie. Let’s be realistic, the holidays are centered around sharing food with family and friends. You eat delicious foods you don’t otherwise eat on a daily basis. You should be able to enjoy the holiday without the guilt, but keep it to just that one day. You must wake up the next day and say “yes, I feel bloated so I’m getting back on track today.” You shouldn’t feel defeated. If you do, those leftover Christmas cookies will be calling 34 Shop In RI

I don’t like diets, but this is almost like the “fasting diet.” Fasting diets are those where people choose six hours in the day in which they can eat anything and everything they want, then fast for the other eighteen hours. Think of the holiday as having whatever you want, but you must get back on track the next day. Now contradictory to what I just wrote, my suggestion and what I prefer, is choosing one indulgence and filling the rest of your plate with veggies and other healthy foods. You can truly eat all you want if you are not eating carbs and sugar. Pick one indulgence and the rest of the plate should be healthy foods. However, if you are disciplined and eat healthy on a regular basis the rest of the year and can stay disciplined after the holiday, there’s no reason to “say no” to the different types of carbs or desserts being passed around the table. In fact, allowing yourself to indulge over the holiday really

shouldn’t impact your weight or health at all. This is going to sound crazy, but your body may actually burn more fat when you get back on track because now it really has something to burn. This is why you can’t slide down that slope. You must get back on track and your body will thank you for it. One unhealthy meal is not going to cause you to gain weight, just as one healthy meal doesn’t cause you to lose weight. The routine and habits you have most days are what matters. If you are healthy most of the year, it’s absolutely okay to enjoy the holiday food spreads without guilt. Where the holidays become a problem is when people look at November and December as a time to let loose before getting “back on track” in January. You can and will gain weight if you throw your habits out the window for two straight months. The holidays likely mean more than just one or two unhealthy meals, and going off your healthy or normal way of eating for a few weeks or a couple of months at a time, can and will add up. It’s the multiple holiday parties each week, more desserts, Christmas cookies, pies, more alcohol than normal, extra treats and snacks in the office, etc. This usually starts around Halloween or Thanksgiving and continues for at least one to two months which causes many people to gain weight. I will say again, holiday is one day not multiple days, and yes, you may have parties to go to, but you can bring a healthy dish to pick on. You can choose to fill your plate with the best options available. You can skip the dessert. You can have something healthy and filling to eat before you go so you are not hungry and eating everything that is offered. It really all comes down to how much you control food or how much you allow food to control you.

Ask yourself these questions when you are tempted to eat something: • Am I really hungry? • Do I know what this already tastes like? If yes, do I really need it? • How am I going to feel after I eat this? • Can I take one bite to satisfy the craving, and then be done?

Should You Consider Your Home a Retirement Asset? By Edward Pontarelli Jr. If you own a home, chances are your net worth has shot up

in the last year. According to a new report, skyrocketing home prices caused by a pandemic-fueled real estate frenzy have led to a scenario where homeowners in the U.S. are sitting on a record $22.7 trillion worth of home equity.1 Seeing the estimated value of your home increase on real estate sites can be exciting, especially if you’re counting on that money to one day help fund your lifestyle in retirement. But it’s important to remember that real estate is a more complicated asset than cash. Keep these factors in mind as you consider how the value of your home may be used to bankroll your retirement.

1. You need somewhere to live.

Whether it is in your current house or somewhere else, you need a roof over your head, and that usually comes with a sizeable cost. Many people who downsize their homes underestimate how much they’ll end up spending on a smaller condo or to live in a retirement community. In fact, some come to realize that their new accommodations are on par with or even more expensive than their previous homes – especially considering that they may end up spending two or three decades there in retirement. Regardless of your situation, do the math so you know what you’re getting yourself into financially and how it will factor into your plans for retiring.

2. Selling your home might not be as easy as you think.

Given the strong demand and short supply of houses on the market, you may be seeing homes sell at lightning speed in your local community – but it’s important to remember there are no guarantees. In some areas of the country, hot housing markets are beginning to cool. As a result, you might be disappointed in the price you are able to generate when you sell your property. Many people have been disappointed to discover that their home is not as valuable as they might have expected. It’s important to keep a pulse on the housing market in your area to help determine what you may be able to get for your home.

3. Determining a home’s value can be difficult.

Compared with a stock, bond or mutual fund that can readily be priced in the market and bought or sold daily, a home is a different kind of investment. The value can’t be precisely determined, and it is not considered to be as much of a liquid asset. If you’re serious about selling your home, it

may be worthwhile to hire a professional appraiser to give you a realistic sense of how much you can expect to a buyer to pay you for it. How to Save for Education Without Taking your Eye Off of Retirement By: Carrie McPherson It’s no secret that many American parents want to support their kids by paying for their college education. According to recent research from Student Loan Hero, 92 percent of parents today have already paid for or plan to assist with these costs. Furthermore, 68 percent of parents say they would consider withdrawing from their retirement savings, potentially delaying retirement, to help their kids pay for college. While the choice to delay retirement to pay tuition is understandable and even admirable, the reality is doing so may not be the wisest financial decision. If you are considering how to balance saving for college and retirement, read on for some perspective.

Prioritize college bills or retirement?

Although it may be hard to hear, saving for retirement should take priority over college tuition. To understand why, consider the following:

• You may not get to choose your retirement date.

Injury, caring for an aging parent, or a layoff are among the factors that could ultimately make the decision for you.

• You don’t want to run out of money in retirement.

If your savings come up short, you don’t have the ability to apply for scholarships, grants or financial aid to help bridge the gap. (Your child has access to these options to help pay for college.) Instead, your options are likely to be working longer, finding other sources of income or spending less on travel and other retirement dreams. While it’s imperative to focus on your own financial security in retirement, funding higher education is still an important goal for many parents. The key is striking the right balance between saving for both goals. Consider the following tips as a starting point:

1. Paying for college doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing.

Many parents choose to pay a percentage of the total bill, cover certain expenses (e.g. tuition, technology fees or room and board), pay for a set number of years, or contribute as much as they are able to save by the first day of school instead of funding the full cost. Revising your college savings goal in one of these ways could allow you to direct more money to retirement.

2. If your child has sights on graduate school, decide whether you will contribute to those bills too.

This decision is particularly important if your child needs a graduate degree before entering his or her field of choice. If you intend to provide financial support, calculate how much the total cost will be so you have a clear savings target in mind.

3. Discuss your intentions with your child.

No matter how much you contribute, talk to your child (if and when your child is old enough) about your financial commitment so he or she knows what to expect. Discuss how your contribution will look like at their preferred colleges. For example, if you agree to pay a set amount, perhaps this money will fully cover community college, a substantial amount at a state school, and leave a larger portion of the bill outstanding at a private college. Breaking down the costs for your child can help him or her make an informed decision about how much student debt (or scholarships, grants, etc.) is needed to cover the bill. No matter your financial situation, know that it is possible to make meaningful progress toward both goals, particularly if you are intentional about how to allocate your savings. When Robert “Bob” Liptrot enrolled in an adult education woodcarving class more than 40 years ago, little did he know that one day his work would be enjoyed and collected all over the country, and sought after at some of the most popular artistic venues throughout the region.

engineer at Brown and Sharpe in Providence, and later in North Kingstown, he enjoyed his avocation and passion for carving in his basement studio and sharing his gifts and talent with people from all walks of life. Customers often tell the carver that they appreciate his attention to fine detail and expert craftsmanship.

His company, “DesignInWood,” based in this picturesque village, features a kaleidoscope of delightful Santa Clauses, colorful snowmen, inspirational nativity sets and plaques, as well as beautifully hand carved signs featuring scallops and sea shells, pineapples, shamrocks, American flags, numerous canine breeds, and other animals.

“I liked carving from the very start,” he continues. “It has always been an interesting life. There were three members of the original class who also went on to sell their work.”

Liptrot also creates beautiful house signs for private residences, which are often presented as wedding gifts or housewarming presents. “I took the class at Scituate High School with a woodcarver and it piqued my interest,” the artisan begins. “The first show I ever did was at the Gaspee Days Festival in Historic Pawtuxet Village in the late 1970s. My interest in wood carving just took off and it has never stopped.” While Liptrot was employed for 47 years as an

Liptrot later taught woodcarving in adult education classes at the Community College of Rhode Island, and has always maintained a strong interest in the arts. “I still create a lot of signs,” he adds. “Many are made for local businesses and organizations.” The well-known artisan recalls that early in his carving career, he was invited to participate in an event in Newport. “I designed a sign with a pineapple - a symbol of hospitality - for the event, and it really

became popular,” Liptrot recalls, adding that he mostly uses pine or basswood to carve his designs. “Every item is individually carved, painted,and signed,” he emphasizes. “Many people throughout the region collect my work, particularly the Santas.” He adds new designs when they are available. “I’ve done hundreds of shows in several states, and my work is on Etsy and by custom order. Many people see the work at festivals, take a business card, and then call later to place an order,” he explained. Through the years, Liptrot created almost 75 different Santas and snowmen and other holiday collectibles. “Every year visitors stop at our booth at shows such as the Scituate Art Festival, and ask about which new designs are available,” he said.

“I never copy anything and I like to make changes, such as placing a different hat on a snowman or Santa,” he quips.

The talented carver emphasizes that his enterprise wouldn’t be successful without the support of his wife Priscilla, to whom he’s been married for 63 years. While she isn’t actively involved in production, the retired educator helps at the craft shows. The couple has three children.

According to the carver, breed-specific dog signs are popular with owners.

“She’s my sounding board and gives me ideas and suggestions,” he says, adding that the busy couple enjoy perusing antique shops and catalogs searching for ideas.

Other animal-themed choices that customers appreciate include brilliant bright red cardinals, hooting owls, graceful swans, ducks, loons, and other birds.

“I’ve carved numerous Golden and Labrador retrievers, but almost any breed can be carved,” he says. “I just carved a Dachshund.”

“Throughout the Ocean State, shells, especially scallop shells, are often used to decorate signs in businesses and homes,” Liptrot notes. “After 40 years of carving, I am still very enthusiastic,” he says, adding that his daily routine includes rising every day at 5:30 A.M., eating breakfast and reading the newspaper, and heading downstairs to my workshop.”

How to Stop That Annoying Chirp From the Smoke Detector My name is Tom Lopatosky. If you have not had the pleasure of being woken up from a cozy sleep

by a seemingly annoying chirp that you just can’t seem to determine where it is coming from, let me assure you, you have no clue of the enjoyable experience you are missing (sarcasm thickly laid)! The chances are that at some point in our lives, we have all had to deal with some variation of this annoying sound. Sometimes when we hear it, we know immediately what it is. Other times (perhaps simply not thinking of it right away), it may take a bit for us to figure out the cause of this high pitch noise. I am not sure how, but I have known friends of mine that have just let this “beeping” persist for so long, it almost seems to become part of the fabric of their home, and they live with it, being totally oblivious to the irritating chirp that happens every few seconds (typically every 30 to 60 seconds depending on the model). Again, I have no idea how this constant “chirp” does not drive them absolutely bonkers, but for some reason, it does not! For me, even if I am at a complete stranger’s home, at the first sign of this infamous chirp, as polite as possible, I ask the homeowner if I can help them out to eliminate this dastardly distraction. Call it my obsessive compulsiveness, this sound is one pet peeve that bothers the heck out of me – which is probably what it is intended to do (and rightly so). In any event, the reason why the smoke detector beeps like this, is to provide a warning that its battery needs to be changed. Even a smoke detector that is hard-wired has a battery backup and at some point will need to have it switched to a new one. Once the battery is changed, the smoke detector may continue to beep until its internal codes are cleared. Usually, the battery can be changed in two different ways. First off, most smoke detectors these days have 9-volt batteries, though some do use AA batteries. For a wide variety of reasons, it is probably a good idea to have some type of household battery storage place that you can draw from anytime you need a battery of any type. If the smoke detector is a battery-only smoke detector, you would

simply have to detach the bottom portion of the smoke detector, change out the battery with the appropriate size, and reconnect the smoke detector to its base. For hard-wired smoke detectors, there is one extra step. With hard-wired detectors, in the process of disconnecting the base, you will also have to unclip the portion of the smoke detector that is wired to its base and then reconnect it once the battery is swapped out. The entire process should take less than 10 minutes (and that is including setting up the stepladder to reach it). Clearly, if you have a smoke detector that is located much higher up, the process will be a bit more involved. On certain occasions, you may have to reach out for someone (family friend, handyman, contractor, etc.) to help out to access the smoke detector because of the height of its location. The chirping from a smoke detector may indeed be one of the more maddening sounds that one might endure – definitely my opinion! – but as mentioned earlier, it is most likely meant to be that way in that it ultimately may motivate someone to change the battery out as quickly as they can to help better ensure a safe environment for all those in the household where the smoke detector is installed.

By Mark Berger The need for used vehicles has never been greater. Many factors continue hurting auto dealers, who struggle to meet increasing customer demands. Toyota of Smithfield asks vehicle owners to consider bringing in their older car or truck for more fuel efficient models. General Manager John Durrani hopes those looking for inventory should bring in their used car to take advantage of several dealer incentives. “Anyone trading in either their used or certified pre-owned cars will receive an additional $1,000 over book value,” he said. “There isn’t a better time for anybody to trade in their cars. Your trade is worth more than it ever has before, and it’s worth more than its ever going to be worth.” The dealership has back orders for weeks and sometimes months on certain models. Durrani said the market has been “pretty crazy”. With few cars available on their lots, announcing tradeins bonuses has become critical. Durrani said people currently have the means to either purchase a new vehicle or one of the very few remaining used cars. That stems from several rounds of stimulus checks federal and state governments mailed to families. The ask remains because of raised requests. “We are appealing to the public for used vehicles. Simply put, we don’t have the inventory to adequately fulfill orders,” Durrani said. To help facilitate the need for more certified, pre-owned vehicles onto their lot, Toyota of Smithfield also offers 115% of the book value for any used cars. It does not matter whether the customer decides to purchase a car from their lot. “We will buy your trade, even if you don’t purchase a car from us,” he added. The dealership holds a monthly private sale. This month’s has not been finalized at press time because of the upcoming holiday season. These sales are done by appointment only. Those who attend will be expected to follow social guidelines but also have access to their inventory. Managers will be there to answer questions and offer additional incentives.
