RAHM, CADA VEZ MÁS GRANDE

Jon Rahm no tiene límites, y así lo viene demostrando desde que, con apenas 10 años (hace 18) empezaba a ganar campeonatos en su País Vasco natal. Su ansias de triunfo se vieron recompensadas muy pronto con títulos y más títulos amateurs a ambos lados del Atlántico, en Estados Unidos bajo la ‘tutela’ de la Universidad Estatal de Arizona. En 2016, el fornido joven vizcaíno de Barrika daba el salto al profesionalismo, donde hasta ahora atesora 19 triunfos (11 en el PGA Tour y 8 en el DP World Tour), incluidos los del US Open (primer español en conseguirlo) y el Masters.

Su primera victoria en el PGA Tour, no tardaría en llegar: el Farmers Insurance Open en enero de 2017. Su poderío desde el tee, su extraordinario juego corto y su maestría con el putter se mostraron en todo su esplendor cuando embocaba un putt desde 18 metros para eagle para cerrar su ronda y sellar su victoria en Torrey Pines. Hacía apenas dos meses que había cumplido 22 años.

Cerraba esa temporada (2016-2017) con once top 10, incluidos dos segundos y dos terceros puestos.

La siguiente temporada la sellaba con la victoria de su equipo en Ryder Cup y con cinco top 10, incluidas sendas cuartas plazas en dos grandes: el Masters y en el PGA Championship.

En la temporada de 2018-2019, el jugador de Barrika registró una victoria (Hero World Challenge) y una docena de top 10. Quedó tercero en el US Open, noveno en el Masters de Augusta

It seems as though Jon Rahm has no limits when it comes to success, something he has been demonstrating time and time again since he was just 10 years old (18 years ago), when he started winning championships in his native Basque Country. His eagerness to win was rewarded with further amateur titles on both sides of the Atlantic – in the United States as a student at Arizona State University. In 2016, the stocky young Biscayan from Barrika made the leap to the professional ranks, where he so far has 19 wins (11 on the U.S. PGA Tour and eight on the DP World Tour), including the 2021 U.S. Open (first Spaniard to win that title) and the 2023 Masters. His first victory on the PGA Tour did not take long to come: the Farmers Insurance Open in January 2017. His power off the tee, his extraordinary short game and his mastery with the putter were on full display when he holed a putt from 18 metres for eagle to close his round and seal victory at Torrey Pines. It had been just two months since his 22nd birthday.

He closed that season (2016-2017) with 11 top-10s, including two second and two third places.

Highlights of the following season were his European team victory in the Ryder Cup and five top-10s, including fourth places in two majors: the Masters and PGA Championship.

In 2018-2019 he recorded one “unofficial” victory (Hero World Challenge) and a dozen top10s. He was third at the U.S. Open, ninth at the Masters and 11th at the British Open, but ➠ y undécimo en el Open Británico, no superando el corte en el PGA Championship.

El de Barrika lo conseguía 31 años después que liderara ese ranking su admirado Seve, quien se mantuvo en la cima mundial durante 61 semanas en diferentes tramos. Rahm se convertía en el segundo golfista español y noveno europeo que lideraba el golf mundial.

En la temporada siguiente, 2020-2021, ya con el Covid 19 haciendo de las suyas, Rahm se anotó su primer grande, el US Open, y fue tercero failed to make the cut at the PGA Championship. The major was Rahm’s sixth victory on the PGA Tour and his 13th international title overall, and it confirmed widespread expectations about Rahm’s potential. En la siguiente temporada, 2021-2022, Rahm cosechó una victoria (México Open) y quedó ocho veces entre los diez primeros.

Y llegaría su más extraordinaria temporada hasta la fecha, la de 20222023, en la que lleva nada menos que cuatro victorias, coronadas con la de su segundo grande, el Masters, el pasado mes de abril.

Rahm nació y creció en la localidad vizcaína costera de Barrika y es un fiel seguidor del Athletic Club Bilbao. Participó en deportes y actividades como fútbol, piragüismo, pelota vasca y kung fu cuando era niño antes de centrarse en el golf. Conoció a su esposa, Kelley, cuando los dos eran estudiantes en la Universidad Estatal de Arizona. Kelley era lanzadora de jabalina para el equipo de atletismo. El campeón español le propuso matrimonio a Kelley durante un paseo en Torrey Pines en 2018. Era un sitio muy especial para Rahm: obtuvo allí su primer título del PGA TOUR (Farmers Insurance Open 2017) y su primer grande (US Open 2021). Tienen dos hijos, ambos con nombres vascos: Kepa y Eneko. Su jugador favorito es Seve.

Rahm was born and raised in the coastal Biscayan town of Barrika and is a loyal supporter of Athletic Club Bilbao. He participated in various sports and activities including football, canoeing, Basque pelota and kung fu as a child before focusing on golf. He met his wife, Kelley, when they were both students at Arizona State University, where Kelley was a javelin thrower for the track and field team. He proposed to Kelley during a walk at Torrey Pines in 2018. It has become a particularly special place for Rahm: he won his first PGA Tour title there (2017 Farmers Insurance Open) and his first major (2021 U.S. Open 2021). They have two sons, both with Basque names: Kepa and Eneko. His favourite player is Seve.
