Such stuff as dreams are made on... FREELANCE artist Szilvia Ponyiczki explores the power of dreams through her work inspired by the ideas of Carl Gustav Jung. Born in Hungary and now based in Lincolnshire Szilvia has a Masters in Fine Art from Nottignham Trent University and recently displayed her art at the Lost Stories Exhibition at the Surface Gallery in the city. “People of ancient cultures were great believers in dreams and their powers. They were convinced that dreams were oracles, messages of gods or demons; and depending on their culture they had different rituals facilitating insightful dreams,” said Szilvia. “Unfortunately this knowledge has gradually lost its importance during the development of mankind. Dream appreciation and interpretation gained back some of its importance through the writings of S. Freud and C. G. Jung, and through the works of the surrealists in arts.

“I believe that dream representation can take us back to that lost ancient knowledge of mankind, make the human unconscious accessible; showing us what we do not know, what we do not notice.” In the past couple of years she has painted figurative dreamscapes, based on her own dreams. “Immersion in dream analysis made it possible for me to see dream images and later every other image, from the perspective of dream analysis. This made me develop a dream representation based method, making real images dreamlike by moving them from reality into the unconscious, oneiric realm; in an attempt of an authentic portrayal of the unconscious.” A member of the Lincolnshire Artists Society Szilvia has exhibited widely in her home country and her work has also featured in shows in the United States as well as closer to home in Grantham and Sleaford. :Dreams can help us to gain better insight into problems, offer new and creative solutions, and lead to a new way of thinking. Not only because our brain can work freely during sleeping when there are no disturbances from daily life, but because it has access to both the 38
