Robert Burge '76 writes that his classmate, "Bill Hanway '76 has been instrumental in the success of the 2016 Rio Olympics. As Architect and “Executive Vice President and the leader for Global Sports” at AECOM (architecture, design, infrastructure and construction services firm), Bill and his large team were responsible for planning and building the Rio venues. Despite numerous naysayers, the venues were spectacular and completed on time. Bill and his firm are also continuing to work with the mayor of Rio and Brazilian politicians to transform the Olympic Park venues after the games (when many see little use) into public buildings (such as schools, hospitals, housing...) that will benefit the local community in positive ways. "Perhaps the most thrilling moment came as a shock. Exhausted, after days of hard work in Rio (and weeks, months, years leading up to the games), Bill slumped into his airplane seat only to realize that his seatmate was none other than Usain Bolt.
"For young, aspiring artists and architects at Allen-Stevenson, please know that Bill is hard at work now on helping to secure the 2024 Olympics Games for the city of Los Angeles."
