alison neil interior design portfolio
As an interior designer, my work should reflect my clients’ vision and take the design a step further. Unique and innovative design is something that intrigues me and is used in my designs as much as possible. Innovative design merges various disciplines that I actively seek inspiration from to see what is trending in all creative fields. Inspirations for my work come from the worlds of graphic design, architecture, pop culture, and other media. Seeing a design that others might find “risky” or “unconventional” inspires me to seek a new approach in creative solutions. I strongly believe that every space that a designer creates gives them the opportunity to do something different and as a result, advance the design industry.

NEO CITY HOTEL
commercial This conceptual hotel design connects the initial slogan of the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games “Discover The Future / Discover Tomorrow” with the futuristic designs in Anime produced in the 1980’s-1990’s. Many iconic anime speculated what current years (2015-2020) would look like with concepts such as alien invasions, robots and cyborgs, and other technological advancements. Neo City Hotel invites guests to immerse themselves into the alternate worlds and realities drawn by nostalgic anime, through the futuristic design of the hotel. The three Anime used as reference are Ghost in The Shell (1992), Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995), and Akira (1988). 7

Address: 2-Chōme-13 Takadanobaba, Shinjuku City, Tōkyō-To, 169-0075, Japan Scope of Project: Floors 4-8 Size: approx. 5,000 sqft Shinjuku is a city located in Tokyo, Japan. It is known as a major commercial and administrative area. One of the busiest train stations in Japan, Shinjuku Station, is in this city, as well. Takadanobaba is a neighbourhood within Shinjuku city. During the day, it is a commuter’s hub for people travelling from the west of Tokyo. Once the night falls, the city turns into a college town with students flooding the streets and taking advantage of the night life opportunities. This area was chosen to cater to the target market for this hotel - young adults - so that they can enjoy their trip regardless of the time of day. Offering different types of experiences during the day or night also encourages guests to explore the city.

GDH PHARMA CEUTICAL
corporate The design concept for GDH Pharmaceutical’s Vancouver office is symmetry and nature. Symmetry is an element that does not traditionally exist in nature. However, humans seek symmetry for comfort and most items that humans find aesthetically pleasing are symmetrical. With that in mind, we can say that symmetry is essentially part of human nature. This office design combines GDH Pharmaceutical’s rebranding concept and their corporate goal to take care of their clients’ health, with the human desire for symmetry, harmony and balance.

RILEY PARK RESIDENCE
residential The client is a family which includes a graphic designer, a lawyer, and three children. Located in the Riley Park neighbourhood, which features beautiful Queen Elizabeth Park, this residence is the perfect option for a large family. The project reflects the family’s desire for spaces to encourage interaction. In the high pace of a connected society, families can find it difficult to spend time together. By creating common areas, the family can be brought together to enjoy the growing years of their young children.

respite centre This project, designed to accommodate 1,500 refugees on the Mexico-USA border, is centered on a focal point. The oval-shaped structure forces the bridge to go around it, which brings the attention of anyone who crosses the bridge. The structure is highlighted in order to draw attention to the underlying issue and to address the issues in the refugees’ home countries to make it safer for those who cannot flee to safety. Values of Latin culture such as community and family will be highlighted in the common areas of this refugee respite centre.
