Affordable Housing

The statewide average cost to buy a single-family home in 2011 was more than $282,000. That was for existing construction; new single-family homes cost an average of more than $320,000. AHFC helps educate prospective home buyers and assists with various types of loans. Options are key to the loan programs, which range from single-family and multi-family loans to other programs in urban and rural areas. Singlefamily loan programs include categories such as first-time homebuyer, veteran, rural and refinance. Multi-family loans include those for special needs housing and senior housing units. Homeowners’ associations can apply for loans to improve common areas of a complex. And sponsors of affordable housing, such as nonprofits, regional housing authorities, municipalities or state agencies, can get AHFC loans to assist lowincome borrowers in rural Alaska.
