The theme of the 2021 UW MLA Capstone Studio was "bridges," specifically around the Ship Canal that runs through Seattle.
My project focuses on bringing life to the shoreline at the Fremont Bridge. The Fremont Bridge is a unique bridge, even in the waterway-happy Seattle. With two proximal, high-traffic pedestrian trails, funky colors, an artist-in-residency, and particularly low clearance, this bridge is singularly iconic and human-scale in a way that its surrounding bridges are not.
What design opportunities can help connect people to the urban nature around them at this site? How can we create an area that is true to the neighborhood while also connecting cohesively with surrounding areas? Check out my project to discover what design solutions I envision could turn this site into a fun, educational destination.
