Ahmed Akbar Sobhan

Ahmed Akbar Sobhan is the chairman of Safwan Bashundhara Global and a long-standing figure in Bangladesh’s business sector. Through careful planning and a strong sense of direction, he has established a group of companies that have made significant contributions to the country's industrial development. He was born on February 15, 1952, in Islampur, a historic area of Dhaka. As the youngest of six siblings, he was raised in a household where education and discipline were emphasized. His father worked in the legal profession at the Dhaka High Court. After completing his schooling, he enrolled at the University of Dhaka and earned a degree in Business Studies. While studying, he also engaged in extracurricular activities and athletics, developing a balanced approach to academic and personal growth. His professional life began in 1978 when he started working in the service sector. Alongside that, he explored opportunities in domestic trade, which helped shape his understanding of local market dynamics. These early ventures set the foundation for larger business goals. A significant step in his journey was the founding of East West Property Development (Pvt) Ltd. This company quickly became a recognized name in real estate and was popularly known as Bashundhara Housing. Its early success paved the way for wider expansion into other sectors. Encouraged by that momentum, he went on to establish the Bashundhara Group, which, over time, grew into a diverse business organization. The group’s operations now include cement, paper, steel, gas, dredging, engineering, and shipping, among others. Each venture has played a role in strengthening the country’s industrial base. As the current chairman of Safwan Bashundhara Global, he continues to guide the group with a focus on structure, delegation, and accountability. These principles have consistently supported the company's growth over the years.
