2021 Miss South Dakota Judging Criteria and Scoring

Mission of the Miss America Organization: Prepare great women for the world and prepare the world for great women. Job Description: Miss South Dakota is an articulate young woman who can engage with people of all ages and background, who wants to be a positive role model and has a true belief in and is ready to execute her social impact initiative. Phases of State Competition:

1. Private Interview with Panel of Judges

• Allows insight into candidate’s ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the job • Provides opportunity to learn about her qualities and attributes • Allows insight in her commitment to advance and execute here social impact initiative and have a year of service, not celebrity • Ability to get a sense of accomplishments above and beyond the resume • Allows insight into the ability to express and distinguish her beliefs and true knowledge of the world around her

2. On Stage Interview/Social Impact Pitch

• Brings the interview to the stage to see how discussions take place in a public forum showcasing the candidate’s ability to communicate, stage presence, commanding presence, and relatability. • Allows the candidate to speak on her social impact initiative in a public, presentation-style format • Allows the ability to see if candidate can serve as a role model and is reflective of her generation.

3. Talent

• Opportunity to see the candidate’s preparatory and performance skills • Look at interpretive ability and technical skill level including execution, technique synchronization and control • Allows insight into stage presence and on-stage personality • Looks for how enjoyable and relatable the performance is

4. Red Carpet

• Allows look into how the candidate exhibits her own personal style, attitude, personality, grace, presence, and confidence in evening wear or what a candidate would wear at a formal red-carpet event. • Allows a look into composure, confidence, and the attention she captures on the stage and how she appears in the spotlight

5. Final Conversation for the Job/Final Ballot

• Allow a final, highly energetic, and challenging conversation with the judges to determine who is the best candidate for the job • Allows a look at the sense of composure in the final moments of decision • Allow a look at interactivity with the judges and the audience
