WELCOME BACK, MISS SOUTH DAKOTA FAMILY! The Miss South Dakota Competition is a yearly tradition that, like many other traditions, has

been sorely missed during the last year and a half of this unprecedented global health crisis. But this time away certainly wasn’t down time for any of us. The volunteers in our state, as well as nationally, have been working tirelessly to utilize this time for growth and realignment. They have given of their time, talents, and energy to keep this scholarship program running, and their effort continues to be inspiring! Our candidates and our volunteers have been met with challenge after challenge during this past year like no other, and have leaned on each other for support and understanding. Holding this year’s state competition is a feat that very few states will get to enjoy as South Dakota is only one of a handful of states that will hold an in-person competition. We’re still struggling, like everyone else, to fundraise for scholarships and award our candidates the opportunities they work so hard for and deserve. If you’ve ever felt a glimmer of interest in joining us as a volunteer, or if you’re a young woman who would benefit from participating in our scholarship program, we’d love to have you! As we celebrate Miss America’s 100th Anniversary and near Miss South Dakota’s 75th, we don’t have to look very far to witness the unshakeable foundation we stand on. We continue, even during a global pandemic, to prepare great women for the world and to prepare the world for great women.

2019 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

The Miss America Organization recognizes the value of volunteer service and in 2015, the South Dakota Scholarship Foundation initiated the Volunteer of the Year Award. This award is presented to an individual(s) whose dedication and service to either a local competition or the state program has made a positive impact on the state organization.

Our 2019 winner, September Kirby, first got involved in the pageant in 1980 as a contestant and was ‘hooked’. Over the past four decades since, she’s been a local Executive Director, Field Director, Teen ED, Miss ED and now Board President. In addition, September played a major role in the transition of the Miss SD competition to Brookings. The only real break she took was when her daughter, Calista Kirby, competed for and won the title of Miss SD 2012. September’s incredible work ethic, dedication and vast historical knowledge of our beloved program is treasured. Thank you September!

2019 Competition in Review One word said it all . . .

It was a first for the city of Brooking and a first for the Miss South Dakota Organization as well. After 72 wonderful years in Hot Springs, the Miss America franchised State Competition made its premiere appearance in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center on the campus of South Dakota State University in Brookings. And, for the first time in the history of the Miss South Dakota Pageant (now called a “Competition”) the annual event had a one-word theme – “Believe!” It was really quite the party as 28 Forever Miss South Dakotas, now residing in states from coast to coast, arrived in Brookings ready to celebrate the completion of SDSU’s long-awaited, state-ofthe- art Performing Arts Center and to enjoy the luxury of their new home. Brookings Memorial Day Observance at the Swiftel Center. Upon returning to the Performing Arts Center, the Candidates were greeted by Brookings Mayor Keith Corbett and SDSU President Barry Dunn, and with their warm and friendly welcome, Brookings felt like home and it truly was good to be here!

Simunek Conrad, Miss SD 2015 – opened the show with an up-beat, theme-setting “Something to Believe In” followed by a rousing and most appropriate, “Gee, But It’s Good to Be Here!” led by show host and popular weather meteorologist, Shawn Cable. Sixteen enthusiastic and goal-driven local representatives began their week-long rigorous rehearsal schedule on Sunday, May 26th and, along with the entertainers, took time on the 27th to sing for the

As always, music played an important role in giving life to the 2019 Competition theme with “I Believe in Music,” “When You Believe,” “Don’t Stop Believing” and “I Believe” being among the many songs rendered beautifully by the talented cast. Throughout the week the Miss South Dakota spotlight was, of course, on Carrie Wintle, our 73rd Miss SD who, along with her piano instructor, wowed the audience nightly with their intense and highly impressive classic piano duet. Carrie’s year of service was especially rewarding when making appearances with her Outstanding Teen “sister,” Jessica Benson. Together, these young ladies made numerous appearance throughout the state while making wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. While “Believe!” was the word of focus throughout the 2019 Competition Week activities, behind it all there was another word of even greater importance – SCHOLARSHIPS! There is no doubt about it. Scholarships are the main reason America’s brightest young women want to compete in the Miss America program, and for the sixteen ladies competing for the 2019 Miss South Dakota title, the competition was keen to say the least. But in the end, it was a tall, articulate Political Science major from Hot Springs who walked away wearing the 2019 Miss South Dakota banner and crown. Who knew then what we know now? Congratulations and Thank You, Amber Hulse, for TWO years of dedicated service to the Miss South Dakota Organization. Amber’s Y ears in Review When I was crowned Miss South Dakota in June of 2019, I had no idea what ride of a lifetime I was in for, let alone that I would be serving the Rushmore state in this once-in-a-lifetime role for not just one, but TWO years. The last 730 days have been everything but ordinary and it is hard to comprise the most amazing days of my life thus far into a few paragraphs. Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020 and rocked everyone’s world, plans, and lives, my year as Miss South Dakota began as any standard Miss South Dakota’s year should: spending the 4th of July at Mt. Rushmore, attending the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, going to bull-riding and concerts at the State Fair… shaking hands, kissing babies, and even getting to “play guitar” on-stage with the Beach Boys! I celebrated Roselyn, the first-ever Miss South Dakota’s 90th Birthday with several forever Miss South Dakotas, joined some of my Miss South Dakota sisters at the induction of Ray Peterson into the South Dakota Hall of Fame and reveal of the Miss South Dakota exhibit, shot a few pheasants in the name of scholarships, and spent time visiting children in the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals with my Miss America sisters in the area- all in-between my school tour visits, two trips to Florida for Miss America’s Outstanding Teen and Miss America Orientation, an adventure in NYC for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and preparing for Miss America. After Miss America in December, things slowed down slightly as I started back at school as a full-time student. Before the pandemic hit in March of 2020, several Miss South Dakotas said goodbye to Shawn Cable during his last day on the news in Sioux Falls. I even got to welcome the new Miss

America, Camille Schrier, to South Dakota for a weekend. Her trip to Sioux Falls was her last flight just before the world shut down travel. The second year of my reign looked much different, from virtual appearances to serving in another capacity as a White House Intern in Washington, D.C. Luckily, the virtual world COVID-19 created allowed me to speak to students and serve as Miss South Dakota even though I was almost 2,000 miles away in the nation’s capital. Seven hundred thirty days ago, I never could have imagined being here. In January, I was accepted to my dream law school on a full-ride scholarship, and in May, I graduated summa cum laude with my degree from USD. COVID-19 may have made my reign look much different than any other Miss South Dakota’s ever. During my TWO YEARS of service, you could easily say I was wearing many different hats, a graduation cap included. However, despite where I was and what I was up to, I proudly wore the crown and name of my favorite place in the world across my chest while I was at it.

MISS AMERICA I was a part of the Miss America class who made history, the first ever to compete under the Miss America 2.0 guidelines at both the state and national level… little did we know we could make history again as the only Miss America class to serve for two whole years! I must remind myself sometimes that I was a candidate at Miss America because looking back, it truly does feel like a dream. Spending my first anniversary of competing at Miss America at the White House was a tripit is truly incredible how much can happen in only a year. While my Miss America experience looked and was much different than any Miss South Dakota before me, competing on that stage is an honor that very few women can claim. As someone who aspires to represent this state as my career one day, getting the opportunity to announce myself as the representative from South Dakota is a memory I will never forget. I even brought home some hardware! During the opening ceremony, I was one of the five women selected for the Jean Bartel Social Impact Initiative Scholarship! Leading up to Miss America, I did not prepare with hopes to place high or be applauded for personal achievements- I instead focused on my work with Operation Overload. This recognition acknowledged the thousands of hours of work I had put in for the students of South Dakota, driving to rural schools, digging up resources and

scholarships, and planning Super Saturdays in an attempt to ensure that no student was left behind or overloaded when it came to seeking higher education or their careers after high school. This pursuit was the whole reason I wanted to serve as Miss South Dakota, and this award at Miss America only hallmarked my mission. Competing in the Miss America Organization changed my life forever. I never thought when I started at 13 that I would ever make it to the national level. It does take a village, and I would not be the woman I am today in life or this organization without the guidance, wisdom, advice, mentorship, but most importantly, friendships I have found due to Miss America. Almost every one of my closest friends I met through this organization- whether it was at the local, state, or national level. My Miss South Dakota sisters are my mentors, chosen family, and community. The Miss America Organization changed its mission to “preparing great women for the world and the world for great women” the year I won Miss South Dakota. This organization and the women within it did prepare me for life, so watch out, world, there she is... future lawmaker and aspiring real-life Elle Woods.

2019 Miss South Dakota Dear South Dakota,

Thank you. Never in a million years would the quirky, 13-year-old band-geek that took a leap and competed for Miss Hot Springs’ Outstanding Teen on a whim back in 2013 believe the woman she has become today. Shortly after being crowned Miss Badlands’ Outstanding Teen and being taken under the wing of one of my idols to this day, Sara Frankenstein, Miss South Dakota 1998, becoming Miss South Dakota grew into a dream of mine. I saw Sara, a lawyer, a mother, and a powerhouse of a woman- and wanted to be just like her one day. This organization gave me women to emulate, and from 2013 on, I walked in their footsteps. Now, I stand on the shoulders of giants. I would not be here writing this letter as Miss South Dakota… wow, it still feels weird (even after two years!) if it was not for hundreds of other mentors and people in my life, like Sara, who all had their part in the making of this incredible journey I am on. Miss America does prepare great women for the world and the world for great women. So, let me take a minute and thank the world that made me who I am. Thank you to my parents- even George Washington said, “All that I am I owe to my mother,” and that could not be truer. You sacrificed so much to raise me and give me anything I needed to succeed. Words will never be able to do justice for how thankful I am to have you as my mom. And Dad, well, you sure made things interesting this year for mom and me. I left the hospital, not knowing if I would ever get to talk to you again- to chase this dream because I knew it was what you would want me to do. So, I did it, and by the grace of God, you woke up the morning after. I know you were not always a fan of me competing but judging by the number of nurses you told that I was Miss South Dakota, I think we can finally say I made you proud. Thanks for making me work for it. I would be remiss if I did not thank the Hot Springs community: my teachers, coaches, mentors, family friends, community members, and anyone who supported this small-town girl with big dreams. You kept my feet on the ground when my eyes were on the stars. I always joke that it is a good thing my parents only had one- I still do not know how my mom juggled all the activities and events. It would never have been possible without people like you all. You do not have to have the same blood to be family, and I am grateful for all my “adopted” family- you are my village. I did not grow up with any siblings, but before we even won, I adopted a little sister, who became my “official” little sister through these crazy two years. Payton, I am forever thankful we were riding this rollercoaster together. Who knew we would both be chasing our dreams, moving across the country, and living the big city life now. Our lives have paralleled in so many ways, and I don’t know if I could’ve done it without you… and car karaoke, of course. Thank you to my Miss South Dakota family- the board, my Miss South Dakota sisters, generous sponsors, and all of you “pageant people” out there who saw my potential at 13 and convinced me to go for it, supported “it,” and never doubted my ability to actually reach “it.” I’ll never forget when Shantel Krebs grabbed me by the shoulders and literally shook me, saying, “You are going to be Miss South Dakota someday” after my first year competing as a Miss, fresh out of high school. Shantel became another idol of mine, in both pageants and politics… little did we both know she would be taking on larger roles one day too. One of my favorite quotes is, “if you see a turtle on a fence post, you know it had some help.” Well, I sure feel like that turtle and know I would not be Miss South Dakota today without the support of HUNDREDS of people over the last decade. Because of you, I am here, and it is because of the Miss South Dakota and Miss America Organizations that a west river girl made it all the way to the west wing and got into her dream law school. If that is not enough, because of this organization and the professional development I gained from participating, I will be graduating debt-free! Miss South Dakota is a launching board, and while this journey and time serving South Dakota have been incredible, I am so excited for the next chapter. I will never stop pursuing ways to give back and serve this breathtaking place I get to call my home. So, South Dakota, here’s to the next fence posts: law school, public office, and whatever else God has in store for me on this crazy ride. 2021 NOTES FROM THE PRODUCER It was a Friday the 13th like no other. The day started out with a typical, “Thank God, it’s Friday!”, but I knew from the very beginning that Friday, March 13th, 2020, was going to be different. It would be a day to remember. I could just feel it. State Executive Director September Kirby served as my chauffeur for the day and we were off to my under-graduate alma mater, Dakota State University in Madison, to attend a special reception for Camille Schrier, Miss America 2020! The event was indeed special, for in addition to talking with Camille, we were favored with a live demonstration of her scientific skills which she also performed as a Talent at Miss America. The reception also provided us with an opportunity to spend time with Camille and take full advantage of a photo op with Camille and Shantel Krebs, Miss South Dakota 1997, now President of the Board, Trustee and CEO of the Miss America Organization. We all know there should be nothing but the very best for Miss America, and since Madison is known nationwide for its Blizzards, it was “Let’s all go to the Dairy Queen” – and we did! Our burgers and DQ Blizzards were delicious – very all-American and fun! Sadly, that afternoon things changed dramatically when Camille was informed that her national tour was being put on hold and she was instructed to go directly back home to Virginia. People were told to start wearing masks and social distance by standing 6 feet apart. The Coronavirus-19 had found its way onto American shores and was spreading rapidly. Little did I know or realize I had met up with two driving forces in one day: one being a world-wide pandemic and the other, Miss America! And thus began my 13 months of self-isolation. Like so many other annual events, both the Miss South Dakota and the Miss America Competitions were cancelled for all of 2020, and I couldn’t help but think, “Poor Amber!” Would she really have to wear her crown, sash and heels for another full year? Then again, Amber would have the honorable distinction of being the one and only Miss South Dakota to have her year of service placed under her official picture – TWICE! Nice! And so we FINALLY find ourselves searching in earnest for our 74th Miss South Dakota – the special young woman who will step into Amber’s well-worn shoes. What a rollercoaster ride it has been in a year plagued with postponements, cancellations, political upheaval, sickness and all-too-often, death. And because there have been so many negatives dominating our lives, as your Producer I have felt the need to bring you something uplifting and fun, and this year’s overall production theme promises to do just that! I do hope our talented performers’ energy and enthusiasm will provide you with a well-deserved escape from the doldrums of our so-called “new norm.” It’s only logical then that the Coronavirus-19 pandemic, with its world-wide devastation and gloom, would become a reality for me on a Friday the 13th. It was, however, our charismatic and inspirational Miss America who, on that very same day, became the driving force that showed me what it means to be happy and whose smile stayed with me daily throughout my isolation – setting my wheels in motion for the show you will see tonight. Oh, to have been so lucky on a Friday the 13th! Thanks, Camille! Enjoy the show!

MEET YOUR 2021 CO-HOSTS

Mitch Krebs Mitch Krebs is the Director of Rural Healthcare Program of the Helmsley Charitable Trust which seeks to improve access to, and quality of care for rural residents. To date, Helmsley has granted more than $500 million throughout seven upper Midwestern states including South Dakota. Prior to joining Helmsley, Mitch was principal for Herd Wisdom LLC, a public affairs and advocacy firm he founded. He also served as Assistant Vice President of Media and Community Relations at Avera McKennan Hospital; as Press Secretary for Governor Mike Rounds; and as Public Policy Director at POET. Mitch had a 15-year career as a broadcast journalist, reporter, lead anchor and news director in network television prior to shifting careers to public service and advocacy, volunteering countless hours in support of special causes, organizations and church groups. His dedication to the Miss America Organization dates back to more than two decades. He’s judged many local competitions as well as Miss South Dakota and Outstanding Teen, and served on the board of the Miss South Dakota Scholarship Foundation. When not working, Mitch enjoys playing saxophone with several area rock bands and spending time at his “hobby ranch” where he lives with his wife, Shantel, who served as Miss South Dakota 1997.

Kristi Bauer Richter Kristi, Miss South Dakota 1994, resides in Brookings, SD with her husband, Tom, and three children; Matt (23), Talon (17) and Taryn (14). They spend most of their free time following the kids and their activities which range from musicals and plays to baseball, softball and hockey. Kristi owns her own business in Orthopedic Surgical Sales. Exactech is the main line she represents and is grateful to have her ultimate dream job. A 26-year volunteer with the Miss South Dakota Organization, Kristi has served as Local Pageant Director, Choreographer, Entertainer, Judge, Interview Coach and spent nine years as State Executive Director. She now serves on the Brookings Host Committee and is head of Scholarships and Donations. She also volunteers on the Board of Directors for Prairie Repertory Theatre Company. Kristi has a B.S. in Communication Studies and Theatre from South Dakota State University and, as a dancer, takes great pride in having had 14 years of training in Ballet, Pointe, Tap and Jazz. 2021 MISS SOUTH DAKOTA JUDGES Christopher Tooley

From a state where most bleed Husker red, Chris Tooley unapologetically claims pageantry as his favorite “sport”. Born and raised in Nebraska, Chris has been involved in the Miss America system for nearly two decades. He has worked alongside candidates who participate in the Miss Nebraska Scholarship Program; assisting from interview to stage runway presence and wardrobe. Chris is the former Executive Director of the Miss Nebraska Organization. He has also been involved with the Nebraska’s Outstanding Teen program since its inception, helping start the program and most recently, assisting in the production of the state competition. He comes to South Dakota with experience judging several local and state competitions, most recently crowning Miss Washington’s Outstanding Teen, Payton May who went on to win the title of Miss America’s Outstanding Teen! Chris’ studies include his undergraduate in management of human resource and he recently completed his MBA program. Chris utilize this background, his knowledge and skill as a Human Resources Business Partner with one of Omaha’s largest Health Systems. Chris lives in Omaha with his rescued fur baby, Lucy, where he enjoys cheering on the Husker Volleyball team as well as traveling across the US, including the South Dakota Black Hills, which hold a special place in his heart.

Ann McKay Thompson

Ann McKay Thompson is a former Miss South Dakota and received one of the Grand Talent Awards at Miss America. Since then, she has become a nationally recognized innovative leader having founded the South Dakota Discovery Center, Capital University Center, (the concept for adult learning) and the Oscher Life Long Learning Institute in South Dakota. She was one of the first women to serve in the Cabinet of a SD Governor, first in Education and Cultural Affairs, then Department of Labor. She was chosen as a Bush Leadership Fellow with studies at MIT and went on to publish with Simon and Schuster, NY. The National Press Women chose her as their National Woman of Achievement the same year her coauthored book on women became a national award winner. Other recognitions include being named One of ten Outstanding Young Women of America, a Presidential appointment to the Kennedy Center for the Arts in Washington DC, and her induction into the South Dakota Hall of Fame. As President of the SD Commission on the Status of Women, she coordinated the successful passage of the Equal Rights Amendment and has always advocated an even playing field for women. Ann has served on over 37 boards or commissions. She now serves on the Board of the Hall of Fame and the Foundation for Monument healthcare in Rapid City.

Sally Christenson

Sally resides in Pierre, SD. She and her late husband, Bernie, also owned a home in Fountain Hills, AZ, where they spent their winters for 20 years. Her passion has been in the field of education. She received a degree as an educator from Northern State University and taught school in Aberdeen, Jamestown, ND, Watertown, and Pierre. She initiated the first Head Start program in her hometown. During her teaching years she was active in educational committees and various commissions. Sally has been active in her church and led Bible Study groups, belongs to AB PEO chapter, holding offices including the office of President. She has chaired various fund raising events. Sally was appointed by Governor Rounds to serve on the Judicial Qualification Commission and served as Chair. She was appointed to the Career Service Commission by Governor Janklow. Sally serves on the Commission on Equal Access to our Courts. She has been a member of the state Junior Achievement Board and helped initiate the local Junior Achievement program in Pierre. She serves on the Fairy Godmother Board, a branch of the SD Community Foundation. She’s an avid reader, plays golf and is an exercise enthusiast. Her children and grandchildren remain the loves of her life.

2021 MISS SOUTH DAKOTA JUDGES Elizabeth (Beth) Raml

South Dakota Army National Guard, where she takes care of the IT needs of the Recruiting staff across the state. She worked for 10 years as a Recruiter for the SD Army National Guard in Watertown and the surrounding communities. Beth enlisted in the SD Guard in 2001. She deployed to Iraq in 2003 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. She has held several jobs within the Guard, including Truck Driver, Supply Sergeant, Patient Administration Specialist, along with Recruiter, and the current position in IT. Beth is married to Charles Raml. They have been married for 9 years and have two children. Beth enjoys gardening and most things craft related. She can often be found digging in her garden, planting and harvesting plants and flowers. She enjoys preserving food and cooking for her family. When not gardening or crafting, one can bet she is enjoying a good book! She also keeps active by managing and playing with a local slow-pitch softball team in the summer. Beth is honored to be a judge in this year’s pageant and, as a woman who frequently wears a uniform, she is truly looking forward to putting on a beautiful gown and joining these young women as they compete for this great honor!

Chris Jung

Chris lives in West Fargo. Originally from South Dakota, he earned his B.A. in English from Northern State University in Aberdeen. He then went on to attend law school at Texas Tech University and the University of South Dakota and graduated with his J.D. in 2009. For eight years, Chris was in private practice as a partner at a law firm in Aberdeen, focusing primarily in the areas of collections and commercial litigation. Since 2017, Chris has worked as an attorney for the North Dakota Department of Human Services. He also teaches as an adjunct professor at the University of North Dakota School of Law and Rasmussen College. In his leisure time, Chris enjoys traveling, playing cards, singing, spending time with family and friends, judging speech and debate, and volunteering with his church as an assistant minister, soloist, and reader. But a cautionary note: If you want the program to end before midnight, don’t let Chris get ahold of the microphone.

Job Description: Miss South Dakota is an articulate young woman who can engage with people of all ages and background, who wants to be a positive role model and has a true belief in and is ready to execute her social impact initiative.

Phases of State Competition: 1. Private Interview with Panel of Judges • Allows insight into candidate’s ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the job • Provides opportunity to learn about her qualities and attributes • Allows insight in her commitment to advance and execute here social impact initiative and have a year of service, not celebrity • Ability to get a sense of accomplishments above and beyond the resume • Allows insight into the ability to express and distinguish her beliefs and true knowledge of the world around her 2. Payton’s Y ears in Review Miss South Dakota’s Outstanding Teen – Payton Steffensen Having not one, but two years to reign is definitely an interesting situation that I have loved to explore! I have been so honored to be a part of every fundraiser, competition, parade, and even zoom meeting that I have participated in throughout my reign! My most proud moment this entire experience was representing SoDak at Miss America’s Outstanding Teen and really putting our program on the map. The whole week was a blast, being surrounded by smart, talented, encouraging, and positive young women, some who have become lifelong best friends! In addition, I am so thankful to have been able to give away a car with “Payton’s Keys of Hope,” and I cannot wait to continue contributing to the single-parent family community for years to come! Another highlight I am especially fond of was the Miss SD Pheasant Hunt, where I met some amazing donors, learned to shoot a gun, and even managed to get the first bird (of many) that day! Of course, all the effort was absolutely paid off at each parade I was able to attend, with so many hugs, waves, and smiles (before masks of course)! Lastly, attending each local competition and spending quality time with my sister queens and my Miss, was a blessing in itself. I love the girls in this organization so much, and I know each one has the courage and drive to achieve great things. This reign definitely was not conventional, but has taught me so much, and the knowledge and poise I carry with me now will always help me in future endeavors.

Farewell

Being the longest reigning Miss South Dakota’s Outstanding Teen, these two years have taught me so unbelievably much. I have not only grown up, but have found my true calling in life and thrived, while in the midst of a global pandemic. I have learned lessons, tried new things, and pushed myself to be the best person I can be.

Without this opportunity and responsibilities I fulfilled, I would not be the young woman I am today. In addition, everyone who has supported me through the surprises, crazy drives, long hours, laughs, tears, and every moment in between, thank you from the bottom of my heart. To my wonderful Momma, Super G and Grammy, siblings, friends, family, sponsors, community members, mentors and Miss, thank you for always being my biggest cheerleaders. Jeff Gould is an author, public speaker and broadcaster gifted at inspiring and encouraging audiences and employees. As a public speaker for over 20 years, Jeff has spoken to groups in the Midwest on a variety of subjects, from historical lectures to weddings and funerals, from hands-on sales training, to one-man theatrical productions. His message is always entertaining: a blend of humor and stories, his content is rare and valuable: practical steps towards living a life of passion and purpose. Jeff has also developed a number of on-line courses designed to help parents and retirees, along with workshops and webinars through his website ILikeThatStory.net An award-winning radio broadcaster for more than 30 years, Jeff has been named South Dakota Broadcaster of the year, and as an advertising consultant received awards for both effective ads and ad campaigns. He is also an entrepreneur with syndicated Christmas program in more than 60 markets. Jeff’s warm and engaging speaking style has been compared to Paul Harvey and Garrison Keillor. He continues to blog and podcast. Jeff has been married to Libby for 30+ years and now that their four daughters have grown, they travel together on speaking engagements and seek to encourage others wherever they go. Jeff is also the father of Miss South Dakota 2014, Meridith Gould Selby.

Happy AFTER ALL THESE YEARS

Just like the other 72 outstanding women who have gone on to wear the crown, Roselyn Anderson Ridley was, still is, and forever will be a Miss South Dakota. But only an ever-smiling Roselyn can claim to be the very first. Held outdoors and under the stars at Woodward Field in Hot Springs, the first Miss South Dakota Pageant with its American Indian theme, featured eight contestants representing the cities of Wagner, Redfield, Chamberlain, Edgemont, Lead, Watertown and Roselyn’s little home-town community of St. Onge. No scholarships were awarded at the 1947 competition, and the original four competition categories – Interview, Bathing Suit, Evening Gown and Talent continued to be the judging criteria for Miss America and all preliminary competitions until 2019 when Swimsuit was dropped from the competition. While the Bathing Suit may have been Roselyn’s least-favorite category, Talent was special for Roselyn, and although she considered herself to be just an average pianist, her keyboard skills in rendering, “O Sole Mio” were good enough to win over the judges on her way to becoming South Dakota’s very first “Miss” to

compete in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, NJ. Today, at 92 years young and having traded her crown for a cowgirl hat, Roselyn can be found still living the dream on her beloved ranch at St. Onge. Fortunately for all of us, while the pageant was still in Hot Springs, Roselyn made her annual Runway Walk a special pageant highlight. Her annual appearances provided the entire Miss SD “pageant family” with the incredible opportunity of getting to know, adore, and truly appreciate the incredible lady who started it all. Roselyn, your infectious smile makes everyone HAPPY, and we thank you for sharing it with us. You’re not only the very first, but also the very best – and will be FOREVER.

Jan feels blessed to have lived a life rich with experiences, one of which was serving as Miss South Dakota in 1960. She’s lived in Minneapolis, Vancouver, BC, NYC and SFO, all communities in which she played an active role. She has been married twice and has raised a daughter and five stepchildren. She loves spending time with her granddaughter, now competing on her university’s equestrian team. Jan is currently in Norway with her fiancé (yes, you CAN find love in your later years) and will return to the US with him as COVID dictates. Her insatiable curiosity and eagerness to learn has led to successful careers in investment banking, real estate consulting, marketing, photography, and media/ entertainment. In 2007, she chose to listen to her intuition, gave up her beautiful Sausalito home, gave away her belongings, and set out to experience life without the “trappings”. She says it was an amazing journey that expanded her life in many ways. In 2010, as advisor to four millennials, she negotiated a TV series on their behalf, sold it to MTV as a “feel good” show and Executive Produced the series, “The Buried Life”. Through Inspiritrix, her consulting practice, she has assisted clients in identifying their life purpose and living their lives to the fullest. (Inspiritrix is a Greek word which means “one who inspires another to attain their Golden treasures”.) Her wish is to be “Fairy Godmother” to as many people as possible for the rest of her life.

I have had a wonderful life and grateful for my SDSU graduation in 1962. I earned a M.Ed. ECE from Iowa State in 1964 and Ph.D. from University of Akron, OH in 1997. I married another SDSU graduate, Richard Schulte. We are approaching our 55th years married. I have received many recognitions, including: Recipient of Excellence in Teaching Award, Cuyahoga Community College 2002; appointed as faculty member of NAEYC Professional Development Panel; Peer Reviewer for programs seeking NAEYC Accreditation from 2004 to 2014. We have two children and seven grandchildren. At the time of the collapse of the Vietnam War, we sponsored four Vietnamese siblings who became members of our family. My gratitude for SDSU and the opportunity to be represented as Miss South Dakota expanded my appreciation for many who were encouraging.

MARY HARUM HART

Mary sang a medley of Beatle hits and was a Semi-Finalist in the 1970 Miss America Pageant. A graduate of Augustana College, Mary taught English at Sioux Falls Washington High School before leaving the state to pursue a career in Broadcast Journalism. She worked at several television stations and appeared on TV shows and commercials, but eventually became a household name as the female co-host of Entertainment Tonight (ET) earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in May of 1989. She continued to host Entertainment Tonight from 1982 until retiring from the show in 2011. Mary and her husband, Burt Sugarman, are the parents off one son, Alac (AJ).

Sue grew up on a ranch in the Black Hills, and in 1969 represented South Dakota in the Miss American Teenager Pageant in Palisades Park, NY where she was one of eight finalists. She attended SDSU from 1969 to 1972 majoring in art. She became Miss South Dakota in 1971 and after crowning Janet Hunter as Miss South Dakota 1972, Sue married her college sweetheart, Tom Thelen. They have 3 children and 11 grandchildren with one more on the way in July. They moved back to South Dakota and, in 2018, Sue decided to finally finish the degree she started nearly 50 years before. So, 52 years after she started college, Sue graduated from SDSU with her bachelor’s degree on May 8, 2021. She is an accomplished artist working in many mediums featuring primarily landscapes and wildlife.

CAROL BARNETT NESBITT

The year she gave up her crown, Carol met the pageant sound guy, and two years later married him. They’ve now been together for 40 years, have 4 children and 3 grandchildren. Carol worked as a news anchor and reporter for years, but for the last 25 years has worked in communications for Catholic school systems in Sioux Falls and Denver. She has continued to give back to her beloved Miss SD program over the years, serving as a Miss SD Board member, pageant entertainer, co-host, local pageant director, scholarship fundraiser, program book coordinator, coordinator of the “Forever Miss SD Sisters” alumni group, and finally – interview & talent coach and general cheerleader of contestants. As one of 12 children whose dad died young, Carol understands the value of the scholarships offered to contestants through this program and the training they receive through their participation, and how life-changing both can be. Carol has sung in many bands including a jazz standards band and several big bands. She’s been an active volunteer with Dougherty Hospice and The Banquet (soup kitchen) and, along with her brother, helped create three Christmas CDs, raising more than $100,000 for charity. She and her husband are enjoying Colorado and do a lot of hiking in the mountains. She recently conquered her first two “14-ers”.

PENNI LARGENT HANSEN

Penni invested her Miss South Dakota scholarship funds into her goal of a career in Broadcasting. Following the completion of her broadcasting degree from Arizona State University, she worked in her industry as a TV News Reporter. However, she soon discovered her real life’s passion was actually raising and helping children. Penni was an active member of the Jr. League of Dallas, TX and Cleveland, OH, volunteering her time into the child-focused service programs of an AIDS daycare and the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas. Penni spent years as a court appointed special advocate for abused and neglected children, and then turned her focus to hospitalized children in Dallas. She, along with her 85-pound Golden Doodle, regularly visit two children’s hospitals as a therapy team, bringing smiles and a bit of joy to children of all ages. But, of all of her accomplishments, Penni is the most proud of her 37-year marriage to Mike Hansen, their two grown daughters, and her 2-year old granddaughter. Penni has always believed that she is truly #1LuckyPenni!

Jennifer received her Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science and Nutrition from South Dakota State University, and her Master of Science degree in Food Science and Nutrition from North Dakota State University. She is also a registered dietitian. She currently is taking a break from her professional career and enjoying being at home with her kids. Previously, she was with International Dairy Queen for over 24 years and held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility, serving most recently as the Vice President of Quality Assurance and Food Safety. In this role, Jennifer managed the company’s world-wide quality assurance program to ensure store operators had access to products that met Dairy Queen’s standards for quality, consistency, value and safety. She has also served on the University of Minnesota Advisory Council for the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, and is a founding member of the National Restaurant Association’s Executive Nutrition Study Group. In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys volunteering at her children’s school, entertaining, gardening and going on walks with her family. She lives in Plymouth, Minnesota with her husband Chip and their three children.

Shortly after her Miss South Dakota reign, Melissa moved with her young daughter Kaylee to Montana. It was there that Melissa began the start of what would become a long and fulfilling career as an investigative reporter and news anchor. Melissa soon landed in Colorado Springs, CO, where she would raise a family with four children and many furry friends, while simultaneously working at the local news station; for many years she was lead co-anchor on the week-day evening news. In 2005, Melissa reconnected with an old college flame, and by 2006 they were married, and Melissa and her children (Kaylee, Myanna, Allie, and Jackson) moved to Fort Collins, CO, to join Chris. The family got a lot bigger, as they gained a step-dad and step-sister (Vivian), and only two years later would welcome another baby sister (Reagan). With six children and many furry and non-furry friends, Melissa spent the following ten years focusing her efforts on raising her kids, often describing these efforts as “herding cats.” As her children slowly have left the nest, Melissa has been able to focus her time and energy on something she has always loved: man’s best friend. For the past several years, Melissa has volunteered her home, time, and occasionally her children’s time, on fostering rescue dogs and helping to place them in loving homes and, out of a hundred dogs she’s fostered and nurtured back to health over the years, she only kept two of them! Melissa would tell you how thankful and happy she is that she can host a Family Dinner every Monday night with all of her kids and the love of her life.

Nicole resides in Bedford, NH with her husband Kevin and two girls, Cameron (age 10) and Emerson (age 7). After spending 5 years in Chicago and 12 years in Atlanta, she finds New England a beautiful place to raise her family and feels the heart of the people in New Hampshire really resemble the heart of those in South Dakota, making it truly feel like home. Nicole works as an advisor to the nonprofit senior living industry, by leading market research and strategy at OnePoint Partners. She also continues to volunteer through the Miss New Hampshire Program to continue to give back to the Organization that gave so much to her.

Alecia continues to work in the senior living industry helping active seniors as well as those with dementia/Alzheimer’s get the most out of life.  She has worked for the Good Samaritan Society for 15 years. She currently serves as the Senior Living AdministratorSioux Falls Area overseeing the independent living, assisted living, and memory care assisted living campuses in Sioux Falls and Dell Rapids that Good Samaritan Society and Sanford operate.  She advocates for senior issues and represents the industry as she serves on the board of directors for the South Dakota Heath Care Association. Alecia lives in Tea, SD with her husband Brandon and their children Kenadi(11), Jamison(9), Rylie(8).  She enjoys her role as chauffeur taking her children to practices, games and camps as they are discovering their own passions and interests. She is forever grateful for the opportunities that the Miss South Dakota program has brought her and the relationships she continues to build by staying connected. She is hopeful we are able to be together in person for the 75th next year!

After finishing her degree in Exercise Science at South Dakota State University in 2012, Loren headed south to Atlanta and earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Emory University in 2015. Since that time, Loren resides in the Atlanta suburbs where she met and married her husband Jason in 2019. They are currently cat parents of two. She practices physical therapy in a local outpatient clinic, helps at the local hospital and also owns/operates her blog “Hey, Lo! Blog”. Her husband is co-owner of a growing group fitness company- Twisted Cycle. She recently underwent training to become a pelvic floor specialist to help women feel their best pre/post-natal. Loren spends her free time traveling, lifting weights, hiking and enjoying DIY projects. Loren fondly remembers her time as Miss South Dakota 2010 and appreciates all you who helped make her dreams possible.

Since my time as Miss South Dakota, there have been a whirlwind of adventures and trials, but just like the journey of being Miss South Dakota, every piece has made me who I am today. After I passed on the crown, I went out into the business world and dove into media sales with NewsCenter1 Media Group the NBC television affiliate for western South Dakota. I later moved into management and built teams that handled the revenue side of the business. During that time, I married my love Josh Whetham and we now have two little girls- Cami, 6, and Savvy, almost 3. Pregnancy was the most challenging time of my life. Cami was born at 27 weeks because I developed extreme preeclampsia and hellp syndrome. As a result, the only way to even have a chance at saving both of us was to deliver. With Savvy we were able to extend the pregnancy longer but it was touch and go most of the time. Since I went through these scary pregnancy challenges, I have been drawn to hospitals and healthcare. It was a desire I couldn’t seem to kick, so this year I took a position in community relations for Monument Health in Rapid City, SD. I now get to advocate for the hospital where our lives were saved. Josh and I recently built a new house and barn on our land north of New Underwood where we raise performance horses. Life has already taught me so much and I look forward to all that God has in store for myself and my family.
