WELCOME ASFF opens on Thursday 7th November and continues until Sunday 10th November As we move into our 3rd year of ASFF, we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring you this new instalment of York’s international short film festival. Programming this year’s festival has been exciting, from choosing the Official Selection from over 30 countries, to organising this year’s masterclasses, networking events and guest screenings. We have a rich selection of films from across the world, in genres including drama, comedy, thriller, documentary, animation, experimental, artists’ film, music video and a new family friendly programme. This year’s masterclasses include Joakim Sundström (Seven Psychopaths ) and BAFTA on Sound Editing, Warp Films, Film4, Channel 4, Alice Lowe on Screenwriting (Sightseers, Hot Fuzz and Kill List ), and a lively panel discussion exploring the nature of short film, as well as many other industry opportunities. We have a number of events, from our ever-popular Meet the Filmmakers evening to daily networking sessions with industry representatives from Edinburgh Film Festival, London Film Festival, Channel 4 and many others. There are also special programmes from BAFTA, Yorkshire Film Archive, and Screen Bandita, as well as our guest countries: India, Mexico and Kuwait. On a practical note, due to the historical nature of some of our venues, seating is allocated on a first come, first served basis, so please arrive at the venue early. Friday 8th November Screenings all day and Friday Night Party at 1331 A series of talks at York St John University and York Theatre Royal during the afternoon from film industry representatives. Please note we can only accommodate a limited number of people per talk, so please book early.

Saturday 9th November Screenings all day and Meet the Filmmakers Meet the Filmmakers event at Yorkshire Museum from 7pm, with screening at 8pm, followed by a panel discussion with our filmmakers and networking opportunities, music and bar.

Sunday 10th November Limited screenings across the city and Award Ceremony An award ceremony will round off the festival at the ASFF HQ (De Grey Rooms) from 6pm, free drink with your ticket and networking. Category winners will be announced, as well as Best of Fest Award and the People’s Choice.

Tucked away inside the venue is Brandy Brown’s Little Cinema, a boutique cinema space providing a luxurious viewing experience with its leather reclining chairs and sofas. The cinema will be screening our comedy and drama programmes throughout the festival, allowing you to combine networking and catching the films you want to see.

MASTERCLASSES: TALKS FROM THE INDUSTRY (FRIDAY 8 NOVEMBER) Alice Lowe Alice Lowe on Screenwriting Alice Lowe has appeared in some of the UK’s best loved TV comedies (Black Books, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace), and popular British films Hot Fuzz and Kill List. As cowriter and star of the acclaimed black comedy Sightseers, Alice will discuss screenwriting techniques and how performance can be used as a writing tool.

Film 4 Tom Leggett on Film Production Film4 is known for working with the most innovative talent in the UK. As Development Editor, Tom Leggett collaborates with filmmakers to nurture films from conception to the end result. He will discuss the production processes involved, and what the channel looks for in its upcoming talent.

PANEL DISCUSSION Is A SHort EVER JUST A SHORT?

Panel Discussion Is a Short Ever Just a Short? Lisa Bryer (Chair of BAFTA Short Film Jury), Alan Bernstein (Director of Learning at London Film School), Philip Ilson (London Short Film Festival Director) and Colin Pons (Producer and Board Member of Showroom & Workstation) debate whether a short film can exist in its own right or if it has to lead to other things.

Channel 4 Susie Wright: Channel 4 Susie Wright is Media Project Manager with Channel 4’s Creative Diversity team, which is a first point of contact for new, emergent and unorthodox talent. She will discuss her role in making Channel 4 the most creatively diverse broadcaster in the UK, and what the channel looks for in new content.

Sheffield Doc/Fest Hussain Currimbhoy: Documentary Sheffield Doc/Fest is the UK’s leading festival focusing on documentary. As Programmer for the event, Hussain Currimbhoy knows what to look out for in cutting edge factual film. Discussing how the genre is developing, he will explore the notion of what documentary is in 2013 and what makes a good non-fiction film.

Warp Films Barry Ryan on Warp Films Warp Films is known and respected the world over for such modern classics as Four Lions, Dead Man’s Shoes and This Is England. Producer Barry Ryan will cover the breadth of Warp’s projects, encompassing a dynamic range of shorts and features, and offer insights into production and how to stand out in the film industry.

Film London Maggie Ellis: FIlm London Film London is the capital’s film and media agency. Maggie Ellis, head of Artists’ Moving Image, will discuss the movement and development of artists’ film into features and the crossover from galleries into cinemas, highlighting the opportunities for filmmakers at Film London.

Beggars Group Craig McNeil on Music Video Craig McNeil is Director of TV and Film at Beggars Group (Rough Trade, 4AD, Matador, XL Recordings). He has extensive experience in promoting music videos to the leading music channels. Offering insights into what makes a music video commercial, he will give advice on how to make yours stand out.

MASTERCLASSES: TALKS FROM THE INDUSTRY (FRIDAY 8 NOVEMBER) Cowboy Films Cowboy Films: Lisa Bryer Lisa Bryer is Founder and Producer of Cowboy Films, the company behind such recognised titles as Marley, Last King of Scotland, Fire in Babylon and Goodbye Charlie Bright. Lisa will share the secrets of being a successful producer and provide advice for those aspiring to get into this field.

Raindance Chris Thomas on Directing Chris Thomas has been directing actors in film and theatre projects for the past 20 years, so he knows a thing or two about the business. He will provide various approaches and helpful dynamic tips on directing, how to get better results from the cast, and create a richer experience for the audience.

BAFTA Joakim Sundström on Sound Editing BAFTA nominated Supervising Sound Editor Joakim Sundström will discuss the principles of sound editing and design, drawing upon his extensive experience working on Oscar and BAFTA winning films (Seven Psychopaths, The Constant Gardener). He will be joined in his masterclass by Producer Mia Bays.

Tandem TANDEM on Animation TANDEM is an Oscar winning animation studio. Producer Emma Burch will discuss the studio’s filmmaking process with Oscar and BAFTA winning director Daniel Greaves. Looking closely at his new short, Mr Plastimime, the masterclass will include clips from his Oscar winner, Manipulation, and a Q&A.

Yorkshire Film Archive Yorkshire Film Archive presents a series of short films from their collections, featuring both amateur and professionally-shot footage of the City of York, dating from the 1920s to the 1980s. The screening will also preview Filmed and Not Forgotten, a visually evocative project to discover the stories of people caught on film in Yorkshire during the First World War.

De Grey Rooms (ASFF HQ)

A theatre since 1744, built on the ruins of St. Leonard’s Hospital, the building is a perfect blend of architectural styles from the past three centuries. Partial access.

Originally used as an officers' mess, the De Grey Rooms feature a sweeping neo-classical ballroom in a Grade II listed building. Fully accessible.
