COMMENTARY: A message from 86 AW commander Team Ramstein, Today marks the 20th Anniversary of September 11th 2001 — a tragic day in our history that we will never forget. For two decades, uniformed members and their families have recognized a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. when American Airlines Flight 11 flew into the North Tower. That instant altered our nation and the core mission of the U.S. military more profoundly than any moment since the attack on Pearl Harbor. Since that day, Ramstein has served as our nation’s Global Gateway — a critical transit and staging hub for sending troops and equipment and for receiving and caring for service members wounded in the fight. On 9.11 we remember the service members, civilians, and families lost in the Pentagon, in the Twin Towers, and in the United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania on that fateful day. We also remember the first responders that perished in New York City, who lived by the same ethos of service and sacrifice that
we do — the urge to rush toward the chaos to help and protect others. In acts of true heroism, these individuals became a lifeline of hope for people who needed help. Much like the remarkable work that you all have undertaken in the last month to assist the men, women, and children from Afghanistan who need a safe place to rest while waiting for a flight to their next destination. The attacks also renewed the value of alliances and partnerships, including the value of our alliance with NATO and with our German hosts. We are a powerful and compassionate Air Force that continues to do so much good for so many. Please use this day to reflect on the importance of what you and your families do for our nation and its allies. Each and every one of you are saving lives and making a difference. Thank you for serving and keeping our country safe. I am humbled to serve beside you. – Brig. Gen. Josh Olson 86th Airlift Wing commander

PERSCO: Total accountability Story and photo by Senior Airman Caleb Kimmell 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs From packaging and distributing meals to performing security detail, U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Kenton Waring, 435th Air Expeditionary Wing personnel support for contingency operations non commissioned officer in charge, is a jack of all trades. He is currently deployed to the 435th AEW at Ramstein Air Base, from Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, but is currently assisting RAB in support of Operation Allies Refuge by obtaining total accountability for the evacuees. “This situation is evolving constantly,” said Waring. “It has been an amazing lesson, showing me how fast we need to change to overcome any obstacles.” OAR is facilitating the rapid humanitarian evacuation of U.S. citizens, Special Immigrant Visa applicants and other at-risk evacuees from Afghanistan. Over 30,000 evacuees have received support such as temporary lodging, food, and medical
screening and treatment at Ramstein while preparing for onward movements to their next destinations. The plans, layout and general flow of the operation have been continually evolving. Food lines have been expedited, tents have been moved, and processes have been steadily improving as hundreds of Airmen and partners work to care for evacuees. “I’ve only been working in this position for a week,” said Waring. “I can already feel the camaraderie growing. The rapport is amazing.” Waring’s main responsibility for OAR is obtaining accountability for every evacuee in their pods using their locator identification cards, a temporary ID similar to a driver’s license given to all evacuees upon arrival at the inprocessing center. Waring also says it’s unique to see the United States military and the German Bundeswehr work together on such a scale as this. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Waring. “This operation is a huge undertaking. It’s a blessing to be a part of it all.”

CET bridges cultural gap, facilitates communication in OAR by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The quickly created Cultural Engagement Team is charged with ensuring members of Operation Allies Refuge are aware of Afghan cultural differences and sensitivities. The team, comprised of U.S. Air Force Public Affairs Officers, Information Operations Officers, U.S. Army Special Forces Soldiers, U.S. Department of State, U.S. Army Task Force 361st Civil Military Operations personnel, American Red Cross, USO and other civilian and U.S. Government partner organizations, ensures respect for Afghan culture is aligned with all aspects of care provided while at Ramstein. “We want to make sure our Airmen, Soldiers, and volunteers are familiar with and understand the cultural differences.” U.S. Air Force Capt. Shelby Chapman, 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs, Chief of Mission Partner Support. “We’ve been fighting alongside these people in Afghanistan for the last 20 years against a common enemy. Everyone’s intent here is to be respectful while we support the Afghan evacuees through such a turbulent time in their lives.”
Chapman, currently acting as the CET director of operations, explained the team uses a variety of methods to facilitate communication with the evacuees to provide understanding of their current situation and what to expect while housed at Ramstein. “Transparency through communication was what the Afghan residents of OAR were craving and the CET continues to push honest, open, transparent dialogue,” said Maj. Keavy Rake, 48th Fighter Wing, Chief of Public Affairs from Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England. Since the team’s creation Aug. 25, they shifted the viewpoint of OAR being a military operation to that of a humanitarian one. The team worked alongside OAR leadership to refocus internal communication efforts by elevating the importance of the human element within the professional airlift mission. “Right now, the evacuees who transit here don’t really have a large sense of control over their lives because they don’t understand what’s happening,” Chapman said. “By refocusing our efforts on them as individuals, we’re able to acknowledge the cultural differences in order to facilitate communication successfully.”

Sky is the limit Story and photos by Senior Airman Caleb Kimmell 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A young girl’s eyes lit up as three U.S. Air Force pilots spoke about their experience of flying. She asked questions one after the other to learn as much as she could, in hopes to one day be a pilot just like them. U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Melissa Dombrock, 76th Airlift Squadron commander, Capt. Allyson Swift, and Capt. Taylor Stephens, 37th Airlift Squadron instructor pilots, visited the youth pod to meet a young evacuee with dreams of becoming a pilot. “This is an opportunity to make a difference in a young girl’s future,” Stephens said. “I couldn’t say no to this.” The three pilots met with the young girl and her two sisters. The girls asked the pilots questions like how to become a pilot and how to join the U.S. Air Force. “We have a responsibility to pay it forward, as women aviators, for the future,” Dombrock said. “Any opportunity to do that is important because we stand on the shoulders of giants, the women who did this before us. We’re try-
ing to inspire, provide hope, and be there for this young girl.” The pilots asked the three sisters questions about their plans for the future in the United States. “I have not seen any other countries yet,” said one evacuee. “I wish to see them all.” Swift says that when she walks through the pods while volunteering, she has an overwhelming feeling that she could do more. When she received news that she could talk to the young girl, she leapt at the opportunity. Stephens says helping with Operation Allies Refuge is a large responsibility that has impacted everyone deeply. “It puts life into perspective,” Swift said. “This girl was speechless and all I could think was ‘I am so blessed. Just to be able to speak to you and impact your future.’” The pilots say they have high hopes and expectations for the young girls. As their meeting ended, the pilots gave the young girls patches from their uniforms as a small token to remember them. “My hope for her is that she goes forwards and knows no limits,” Dombrock said.

munity of over 4,000 Afghan evacuees, Capt. Todd Locke, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal flight commander, has had a very interesting and unique experience at Ramstein Air Base. Locke is the “Pod Boss” for Pod-one here. The Pod Boss is the director of operations and oversees all activities inside each of the Pods. This includes the packaging and distributing of food, ensuring security and sanitation, and general day-to-day events. Each Pod is a secure area on RAB where evacuees are being housed as a self-contained unit.
Every Pod has a medical tent, a food tent, restroom facilities and sleeping tents for the evacuees. Locke’s day starts with a meeting with all other Pod bosses, they go over their plans for the day, discuss the flow of incoming and outgoing evacuees and how they will be handled. Throughout the day, Locke ensures augmentees and other workers have everything they need for the evacuees to be safe and comfortable. “Our main goal is to make them comfortable,” said Locke. “We let them know they’re safe, that they will be taken care of, and if we need to adjust we are

more than happy to accommodate that.” Locke has to ensure the several thousand evacuees in his Pod get fed. He does this by organizing the meal preparation and distribution effort. Additionally, several security protocols are in place to ensure neither servicemembers nor evacuees are ever in harm’s way. This includes placing unarmed security inside the Pods around high traffic areas, and other security members at exit and entry points to the Pod to control access. Locke also assists with getting other supplies to evacuees such as shoes, jackets, blankets, toys, and games to all evacuees who want or need anything. “It’s been amazing to see how quickly each Pod developed their own style based,” Locke said. “Other Pods are set up differently so they do different things, it takes on the flavor from their volunteers and the director of operations, and just seeing what works.” In addition to U.S. Air Force augmentees, the U.S. Army and German Bundeswehr are also assisting where they can, such as providing security or handing out meals and water. “We have a large contingent of augmentees, from the U.S Army to the U.S. Air Force, along with German forces,”Locke said. “It’s been awesome to have everyone come together for a single mission. We couldn’t do it without them.”

OSI: Silent professionals during Operation Allies Refuge
U.S. Air Force Special Agent Melvin Watson, Office of Special Investigations investigator, speaks with an evacuee during Operation Allies Refuge at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 7. Ramstein provides safety, shelter, food, and medical services to evacuees while they await transportation to other transient locations.
Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Alexcia Givens 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Air Force Office of Special Investigations, Detachment 515, has deviated from its normal operations in favor of 24-hour support during Operation Allies Refuge at Ramstein Air Base. Throughout OAR, OSI has been coordinating and orchestrating the efforts of federal law enforcement agencies, operating as a conduit for information between echelons here in Europe and the United States. This cooperation ensures the safety and security of our military service members, the multitude of volunteers, our installations, and the evacuees themselves. “Normally, we don’t find ourselves in a situation wherein 24 hours we go from normal operations to having an additional several thousand people living on our base,” said Special Agent Aaron Yardley, OSI Region 5 special investigator. “We highlight information to [the wing commander] and his team, so [Brig. Gen. Olson] makes the best decisions relative to the safety and security of Ramstein and the Kaiserslautern Military Community.” The diversity of OSI skillsets OSI surged from across the globe ranging from special agents to analysts to mission support personnel, has enabled them to operate similarly to working in a deployed environment. “OSI personnel are often referred to as silent professionals working with our interagency teammates to ensure evacuees can move forward to the United States,” said Col. Terrence Joyce, OSI Europe/Africa wing commander. OSI has been working with the Department of Defense,
Department of State, Federal Bureau of Investigations, Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, the Transportation Security Administration, Security Forces Defenders, and other federal agencies to guarantee decision-makers have the information they need to make timely force protection, safety, and security decisions". “Our goal is to rapidly and thoroughly address any concerns with our guests that arise,'' said Joyce. “We are making sure we do our due diligence because our goal is to make sure [guests] can move forward as quickly as they can to their next location.” The mission of OSI outside of
OAR is to protect the installation by cooperating and collaborating with the host nation, law enforcement, and security services to ensure commanders have information to protect their base and local community from any criminal, terrorism, and intelligence threats. This mission has given OSI personnel an opportunity to be part of the larger humanitarian efforts. “This operation shows the spirit of America,” said Joyce. “It shows how we integrate and take care of one another. It truly captures the spirit of America because so many active-duty military members and dependents are willing to contribute during and after duty hours to support OAR.”

U.S. Air Force Special Agents assigned to the Office of Special Investigations gather for a discussion during Operation Allies Refuge at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 7. The priority of OSI outside of OAR is to identify, exploit, and neutralize criminal, intelligence, and terrorist threats to the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Space Force, and those impacting our allies and partners. This is often done through collaboration with state, federal, Department of Defense, and host nation law enforcement, intelligence, and security.
U.S. Air Force Special Agent Michael Bicket, Office of Special Investigations investigator, speaks on the phone during Operation Allies Refuge at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 7. Saving lives and starting lives: Medical efforts in OAR
U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Simon Ritchie, left, 86th Medical Group field response team chief, and Capt. Jeffery Rueben, center, 52nd Operational Medical Readiness Squadron physician assistant, provide medical checkups for evacuees at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 31.
Story and photos by Senior Airman Taylor Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The medical Pods at the temporary Joint Mobility Processing Center at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, are just the first stop for medical care for newly arrived evacuees during Operation Allies Refuge. Here, and throughout their stay on the installation, Air Force medical teams make sure evacuees
rapidly get the care they need: whether receiving much needed over-the-counter medicine, being seen by an OB-GYN or getting treated for other illnesses. With the JMPC quickly reaching capacity during OAR, many evacuees ended up being medically treated before they were processed through the center. “We had almost 7,000 people at one time here in the holding areas that had not been to the medical triage or gone through processing,”
U.S. Air Force Capt. Jeffery Rueben, center, left, 52nd Medical Readiness Squadron physician assistant, and U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Jeffrey Tremel, right, Defense Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Agency independent medical technician, provide a medical check-up for an evacuee at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 31. Ramstein provides safe, temporary lodging for evacuees from Afghanistan as part of Operation Allies Refuge. Medical technicians are available around the clock to provide assistance for evacuees in case of illness or injury.
said Lt. Col. Simon Ritchie, 86th Medical Group field response team chief. “That’s where the secondary mission of my team became, ‘Okay well they’re not coming to us so we need to go to them.’” Ritchie’s team began to periodically visit the holding areas to treat evacuees. Many of the evacuees were treated for injuries or illnesses related to their difficult journeys , such as diarrhea, dehydration and exhaustion. “We (also) have a lot of people who are diabetics, who have high blood pressure, auto-immune disease and thyroid disease, but they don’t have their medicine or lost their medicine,” Ritchie said. “So we’re trying to replenish with at least (enough) supply to get them to their next location.” Evacuees with more serious injuries were treated at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.
Some expecting mothers were treated at the LRMC as well. “I would say one out of four women is a woman with a child,” Ritchie said. “We’re seeing massive families come through here, with 28 people, (that) kind of thing.” Transport to the LRMC proved too long for some expecting mothers, with 3 babies being born on Ramstein as of this writing, and 17 total between the two locations. A pod was specifically created to attend to pregnant mothers. “We’ve had two babies delivered here in this (pod),” said Capt. Danielle Holland, 48th Surgical Operations Squadron OB-GYN. As a trained obstetrician, Holland has brought new children into the world but Operation Allies Refuge was an experience unlike any she’d had before. “I never expected I would be delivering babies in (pods),”

Holland said. “We (also) needed to come up with different ways to do exams without the tools we normally have at home.” To add to the difference in tool availability, communication barriers proved to be difficult for Holland and her team to navigate around. “They have so many different dialects and that’s challenging in and of itself, but it’s also particularly challenging to be talking about female problems,” Holland said. “Some of the translators I’ve worked with said, ‘I don’t even know these words because we don’t really learn them.’” Evacuees have been grateful to Holland nonetheless, with one mentioning that it was the smoothest newborn experience she had ever had. “This was her 9th baby,” Holland recalled. “(It) made me happy and sad at the same time that delivering in the (pod) was the best delivery experience she can think of because she said she’s never had anyone treat her so well during labor.” Saving lives and helping new ones is where medical is positioned to perform at the end of the day, and the Airmen at the medical tents are seeing the results firsthand. “We do a lot of admin work so you don’t get these situations thrown at you with all the unknowns where you have to improvise and overcome the challenges,” Ritchie said. “It’s a really good opportunity.”

A new best friend for OAR volunteers unleashed

quickly noticed that Goliath instinctively comforted a few of her friends who suffered from anxiety and other stress disorders. Later, when Cordero had her own stress breakdown, she saw Goliath was keen to offer his support to her as well. Given his instinct to comfort, she decided

to take classes online to train Goliath as an emotional support dog. He was such a good boy in his training and was eventually certified. In her military role, Cordero was quickly readied for action when the initial evacuation from Afghanistan began. “As soon as Operation Allies Refuge started, we were put on standby to receive patients,” she said.
Cordero was looking to help with OAR in other ways as well Outside of duty, she has taken to volunteering her time simply by walking the evacuee camp and making Goliath available to Airmen, Soldiers and partners who just need a new best friend - if even for only a few minutes at a time. Out of respect for cultural differences, Goliath does not interact with evacuees at

the base. Pictures are popular as Goliath frequently poses for the pup-arazzi with service members and volunteers. Cordero realized that while some Airmen and Soldiers have their family members to lean on, some base residents and augmentees may not. Many service members are very young and may not know how to properly cope with stress, she said. She believes that even talking to them and distracting them from the heaviness of the situation can make a difference. She said if Goliath makes her happy, its paw-sible that he can make other people happy too. “Even if he wasn’t an emotional support animal, he’d still be able to help immensely like he has in the last few days,” Cordero said. “He just walks around, looks cute, smiles and approaches pretty much everyone.” Those that have encountered Cordero and Goliath at Ramstein all agree that what they are doing is paw-some.

You don’t have to have a fine arts degree to benefit. “Focus on the process rather than the product,” said Cahill. “It’s a way to practice mindfulness, forget about all your stress and worry and be in the moment. Sky Clarke, 21st TSC Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Coordinator, offers resources to help individuals make connections and enhance their quality of life. Research shows social connections improve physical, emotional, and mental health. It can also reduce the likelihood someone will consider or attempt suicide.
Story and photo by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command How do you connect with others, and why is that important? Research shows that social connection improves physical, emotional, and mental health. It can also reduce the likelihood someone will consider or attempt suicide. “We need those genuine, physical face to face interactions,” said Lathan Newkirk, Suicide Prevention Manager for U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz. According to Newkirk, making and maintaining connections can be a challenge for Team 21 Service Members and civilian employees who are busy with work responsibilities, may be away from loved ones, or face cultural and language barriers living outside the U.S. September is Suicide Prevention Month — a good time to commit to connect. “Social connections and a sense of
belonging can be protective factors,” explained Newkirk. “Loneliness and feeling like a burden can increase the risk for suicide for some individuals.” According to the latest Unit Risk Inventory report, younger people, ages 17 to 25 are most at risk, so programs that help them make connections are important, said Newkirk. Another group that can benefit from strong connections are Service Members who are newly arrived and have been stationed overseas for less than 12 months. This month, make and strengthen connections with your 21st TSC battle buddies, family and community, keeping young adults and new arrivals top of mind. Connect through art “Arts and crafts are always a great way to connect, whether it’s household or with other people outside of your household,” said Jana Cahill, Baumholder Arts and Crafts Center Program Manager and certified to

Connect through BOSS BOSS (Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers) is a great way for single/unaccompanied soldiers, regardless of rank, to get involved in the community, out of their barracks room and connected to others around them, according to Kaiserslautern BOSS President, Staff Sgt. Sebastian Clayton. “We continuously look for ways to gather our soldiers in a group,” said Clayton. “By providing them with an outlet to de-stress and relax the Soldiers are more willing to get involved and connected with one another. By doing so they begin to create a network of support amongst each other.” According to Clayton, community volunteer opportunities, trips and events such as a mud run, promote a positive atmosphere and help Soldiers “bounce back“ from negative thoughts. All eligible soldiers are automatically enrolled in the program, and the Kaiserslautern military community currently has approximately 1,000 active members. To connect with BOSS visit bit.ly/ Boss21 or call 49 (0)611-143-5419058.

said Jason Ille, Outdoor Recreation supervisor. He added that if they don’t have it, let them know. “That’s how you get good ideas.” In addition to leisure travel and group outings, equipment rentals and special events, Outdoor Rec offers the Warrior Adventure Quest program to Service Members. The program builds camaraderie and is targeted to units that are post- and pre-deployment. Ille is grateful for the number of activities Outdoor Rec is able to offer, while observing COVID restrictions and guidelines. “They give us the ability to be social, something we’ve been deprived of because of COVID.” Connect with Outdoor Rec at bit.ly/ OutRec21 or call +49 (0)631-34064117.
Connect at work- Employment Assistance Program Department of the Army civilians and Service Members share their work environment, but may face different challenges when it comes to making connections. James M. Honeycutt, Employee Assistance Program/ Prevention Coordinator can help individuals and entire teams identify and meet those challenges. “This is not therapy,” Honeycutt makes clear. “However, if someone is having trouble organizing what’s going on their life, they can meet with us. We can make a plan, and there are providers in the community that we can refer people to, that do provide treatment.” Honeycutt explained that the EAP helps individuals and teams develop solution-focused action plans to address workplace issues. Many issues, such as stress and bullying can be related to connectivity. Weekly or bi-weekly meetings or events such as potlucks, where work issues are not discussed, can help build stronger connections. “The focus then is not on tasks, the focus is on relationship building,” he said. EAP can help the relationship building process through mediation and training that enhances communication and promotes team-building. This is vitally important in the U.S. Army mission-essential environment. “When collaborating on a task, especially in stressful environments, I find I have a lot more patience with
people if I know more about them,” said Honeycutt. To connect with EAP for individual assistance or team training, email james.m.honeycutt4.civ@mail.mil
Connect through sports “I love playing sports,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Carlos E. Chavarria Jr., 21st TSC G2 Geospatial Engineering. He has been playing intramural softball for 18 years. He and Sgt. 1st Class Samuel Wheaton, S-3 NCOIC, 21st STB, coached the 21st TSC and 21st STB Sentinel Soldiers softball team to a second place finish for the spring 2021 season. Chavarria and Wheaton said intramural sports are a great way to build camaraderie and have fun with fellow Soldiers outside of the uniform. “When you are part of a team it gives you a window of opportunity to relate in another way,” said Wheaton. The two coaches are a perfect example of making connections through sports. They both hail from Chicago, went to the same high school, and graduated the same year. But they never would have known each other if it weren’t for sports. Now, they share a bond and a network of connections even though one is a White Sox fan and the other roots for the Cubs. Chavarria encourages anyone to participate in intramural sports, even if they don’t think they are athletically inclined. He says one of their softball players this year “was horrible” at first, but got better over the season and developed confidence as well as connections. “I’m a big proponent of intramural sports,” said Chavarria. “It builds unit cohesion.” Find your sport and connect with a team at bit.ly/IMsport.
Connect with the library Finding a place to escape may not sound like the best way to connect, but Landstuhl Library Director Joshua Hampton says providing facilities for study, computer use or meetings helps people make connections. He has even given up his own office space so groups can get together. “The great thing about libraries is that people associate it with privacy,” said Hampton. “It’s a very safe space. Building your vocabulary in German will bring you one step closer to complete fluency! The number of steps to fluency however is in question as German can be a tough language due to its sentence structure, pronunciation and extremely long words. A great way to add to your vocabulary repertoire is to use flashcards. More precisely, put flash cards on things! Your house or apartment is full of places to stick sticky notes (or flashcards) so you can learn visually instead of just studying a boring dictionary. We have put together a list of essential “around the house” vocabulary that you can afix on the objects they translate to.

September 17, 2021 SUICIDE PREVENTION from Page 14 No questions asked. We treat everyone the same. No judgement.” As a trusted resource, Hampton says libraries regularly and happily serve as a referral source, connecting individuals with everything from VAT information to current events. “We’re kind of like Google in real life,” he said. Libraries also sponsor large scale programming that has seen crowds of more than 500 pre-COVID. Smaller programs, such as story times and reading programs are ongoing. Connect with Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Interested in maximizing your potential? Sky Clarke, 21st TSC Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Coordinator, looks forward to meeting you. She’s passionate about helping Team 21 with everything from enhancing resiliency to improving overall (holistic) health. She wants to help Soldiers, families and civilians connect with each other and with programs that enhance quality of life. “There are so many resources here, but we need to help people access them,” said Clarke. “Most provide complete confidentiality, and if one doesn’t fit, move on to the next. There’s a resource out there for you.” She cited the WeCare Europe App (iOS and Android) as a good way to find the right resources. The Comprehensive Soldier Fitness program helps Soldiers, family members, and Army civilians stay healthy while facing challenges common in Army life.

According to Bines, COVID restrictions has made connecting more difficult, but services such as weekly counseling meetings via Zoom are making a positive impact. Whether you are a student or parent, you can connect with ASACS by emailing shirill.bines@dodea.edu.
Connect with religious support There are a few different elements of what makes a person: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual,
according to 21st TSC Chaplain, Col. Stanton Trotter. “If we actively cultivate each area then we thrive as a human,” he said. Trotter defines spirituality as having a connection/awareness with a higher power — most would say God — and then sharing a connection with other children of God. “So having connection with others — family, friends, neighbors, co-workers — is an essential element to being spiritually fit,” said Trotter. “Reaching out to other people and serving, helping, volunteering are the best ways to make connections and feel good about yourself. I encourage everyone not to focus on limitations or the bad that is front of them, but rather to focus on the help that they can offer to others. When we help others, we also gain from that too.” The USAG-Rheinland-Pfalz Religious

Connect by volunteering Volunteer-power was unleashed at full force last month, as dozens as representing the community, and organizations including the American Red Cross and USO sprang into action to support Operation Allies Refuge. As volunteers served the community, they made new connections and strengthened existing ones. According to USO Senior Area Operations Manager, Casey Pizzuto, when you volunteer for the USO, you become part of a family with a very important purpose. “USO’s mission is to strengthen America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation.” USO programs that help people connect include Military Spouse Coffee Connections, where spouses share advice, learn about local events,

Slovak medics aim to sync medical efforts with LRMC visit Story and photos by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Medical professionals of the Slovak Republic Armed Forces visited with Landstuhl Regional Medical Center trauma specialists during a military medical expert exchange at LRMC, Aug. 19. The exchange allowed the medical professionals to discuss best practices and increase interoperability between NATO allies. The visit included discussions on LRMC’s unique Trauma program, which expands across three continents and encompasses four combatant commands, a tour of the hospital, a visit to LRMC’s European Medical Simulation Center and insight into LRMC’s Traumatic Brain Injury and Rehabilitation programs. “We have senior leaders from the Slovak Armed Forces military medical service and (civilian health care specialists) who came to visit,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Brad Rittenhouse, medical director, Trauma Program, LRMC. “They want to find out what our (trauma care) practices are and also more complex surgical and inpatient care multidisciplinary practices.” According to Rittenhouse, the amplified interoperability would benefit both NATO partners in efforts to enhance patient care for Service Members and families through the exchange of ideas. “A lot of the processes and difficulties that we have are similar,” explains Rittenhouse. “If we understand each other's practices then either on the battlefield or in peacetime we can better support the NATO alliance.” The congregation included

surgeons, physicians, nurses, medics and administrative personnel in efforts to capture LRMC’s exclusive trauma response program holistically. Also joining the group was the Slovak Armed Forces’ Deputy Surgeon General, Slovak Armed Forces Col. Jozef Ragan. “The medical professionals (who visited) are leaders in their professions,” said Ragan. “We recognize the opportunity we have (through col-

laboration) to do our jobs better for our (Service Members).” Although U.S. and Slovak Armed Forces have a history of cooperation on the battlefield through years of NATO operations in the Middle East, no formal program exists to exchange medical best practices. “Through cooperation we can fill the (medical practice) gaps,” said Ragan. “I hope this visit will reveal those areas to allow us to eventually be able to work in combined teams.” Although the informal visit was strictly an observation of how the DOD’s only Level II Trauma Center outside the U.S. operates, Ragan believes future training partnerships
can evolve patient care for both nations. “(Service Members) deserve the same treatment, whether you’re American or Slovak, and we should guarantee that treatment,” said Ragan. According to Ragan, in addition to developing capabilities, the association may also contribute to advancing military medicine through research and education. “It's about creating capabilities which we can sustain and continue in tough times,” said Ragan. “You need a team which is properly trained and well communicated to support our troops during a war conflict or during
disaster relief operations.” Landstuhl Regional Medical Center is the only forward-stationed medical center for U.S. & Coalition forces, Department of State personnel, and repatriated U.S. citizens. The largest U.S. hospital outside the United States, LRMC serves as the sole military medical center for more than 205,000 beneficiaries throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. LRMC is also the evacuation and treatment center for all injured U.S. Servicemembers and civilians, as well as members of 56 Coalition Forces serving in Afghanistan, Iraq, as well as Africa Command, Central Command and European Command.
