Ramstein humanitarian efforts: More than just ‘drop and go’ Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Jennifer Gonzales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs To provide the world’s greatest tactical airlift expertise anytime, anywhere, to the United States, our allies and to those in need: such is the mission of the 37th Airlift Squadron. “The 37th has been really busy over the summer,” said Lt. Col. Beau Tresemer, 37th AS director of operations. “COVID-19 isn’t stopping and neither are we.” Airlift is more than just picking up cargo and dropping it off somewhere. Similar to an aircraft, an entire system is in place for the 37th AS, and it connects with other systems in different squadrons to make their missions possible. According to Staff Sgt. Brian Clark, 37th AS loadmaster, the process from notification to liftoff can move extremely quickly. See HUMANITARIAN, Page 2

by Senior Airman Noah Coger 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For the past two years, a central focal point for U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa is increasing readiness. Exercises with Mission-Oriented Protective Posture gear, and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives material defense training have become regularly integrated into the Master Scenario Event List since 2018. “Typically, training for the readiness exercises are delegated

to staff sergeants and below,” said Chief Master Sgt. Jason Selman, USAFE-AFAFRICA CBRNE functional manager. But for Selman teaching is a passion that goes beyond rank. “As a father of four and grandfather to one, I’m constantly teaching in some form and it’s something I’ve been fortunate enough to integrate into my Air Force career.” No stranger to military life, Selman was born in Great Falls, See CBRN DEFENSE, Page 3

Page 2 HUMANITARIAN from Page 1 “If we’re going to fly a humanitarian mission, we’ll get a message from our aircraft commander — an alert message letting us know that we are, indeed, going to do the mission,” Clark said. “Once we get that message, we have an hour to show up at the squadron.” Although everyone who was notified for the mission must act quickly, it’s also important for them to note their physical and mental status. Risk management protocols are in place to certify that Airmen are capable of accomplishing the mission for that day. Communication is key to maintaining a clear vision of what’s happening. After those first steps are taken, the 37th AS will link up with other squadrons, such as the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron, under which the Air Terminal Operations Center falls. “I’ll check in with the ATOC and actually see what cargo we have for this humanitarian mission,” Clark said. “I’ll also call the passenger terminal to see if we have any passengers who are going on the mission. Once that happens, I’ll get my pro gear-things I’m going to need to actually go out and fly with. I’ll get a tool kit, reading material, and we’ll go and catch our crew bus to the flight line.” When they arrive, crew members go to their designated aircraft and begin their pre-flight duties, said Clark. “We put power to the aircraft and verify the cargo department is configured in such a way that we’re able to accomplish the mission.” Shortly after, ATOC personnel will arrive with the verified cargo. Then, passengers will show up and the pilots will come out to take care of their pre-flight duties. “At that point, once we have everything on the plane, safely put into the box, strapped down, we’ll fly our mission to wherever we’re going, unload everything, turn around and come back,” said Clark. Loading pallets and dropping

them off is only the tip of the iceberg. Beneath the surface is an entire organization of dedicated individuals working together to ensure the safe delivery of cargo and personnel. “It takes the whole team,” said Tresemer. “It’s not just us landing somewhere, dropping stuff off and leaving. There’s a huge logistics and support tail that helps us to get out the door, as well as receive us when we’re on the ground. A lot of the time, we’re the face of that, but we couldn’t make any of that happen without everyone here on Team Ramstein.” The commitments of the 37th AS, as well as the 86th LRS, are a great part of what keeps the “lift” in the 86th Airlift Wing. U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Jason Selman, United States Air Force in Europe-Air Forces Africa Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear functional manager, demonstrates how to detach the drinking tube on a gas mask during a CBRN defense course on Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 24. The CBRN course teaches Airmen how to survive and operate within a CBRN contested environment.

CBRN DEFENSE from Page 1 Montana, at Malmstrom Air Force Base, and has served for the past 27 years. His father, a retired Air Force veteran, worked in missile security when Selman was born and then moved his family to Dallas, Texas, to finish his career as a recruiter. Selman joined at 18 to become a law enforcement specialist to carry on the tradition of service. After one enlistment, though, the Air Force began a reduction in manning within his career field, forcing him to be reclassified into another Air Force specialty. This unexpected shift placed Selman into what was called readiness, which was not on his list of choices. “At the time, I wasn’t excited about it,” Selman said. “I’d never heard of Readiness and didn’t know what I’d be doing. However, it was still a job and I was a young senior airman with a wife and child that I had to take care of, so I had to take it.” The readiness career field, now known as Emergency Management, encompasses two core mission sets: all-hazards emergency management and counter weapons of mass destruction consequence management. In short, how to prepare for and respond to both natural and manmade disasters. And at the core of these is education and training. “It was actually a blessing in disguise,” Selman said. “I really wound up enjoying the career field and it’s afforded me opportunities that I don’t think I would have had otherwise. I was able to get a Bachelor’s degree in Disaster

and Emergency Management and a number of certifications that will translate really well to civilian life once I retire.” Just as Selman felt he was new to the career field, a majority of currently serving USAFE-AFAFRICA Airmen weren’t exactly sure what Emergency Management’s role would be when exercises ramped back up in 2018. At that time, a study found that 96% of USAFE Airmen had been in the Air Force for 10 years or less when the Air Force stopped implementing Operational Readiness Inspections in 2010. This left roughly 4% of USAFE-AFAFRICA Airmen with ORI experience. The Air Force used ORIs to evaluate a wing and its ability to fulfill mission-essential tasks while supporting contingency operations. Senior noncommissioned officers and higher ranking officers became critical figureheads in re-implementing their knowledge through training and guidance when readiness exercises resumed in 2018. “I saw it as an opportunity to do what I enjoy most: passing on knowledge to the next generation,” Selman said. “Our Airmen are the Air Force’s core — it’s future — and in order for them to thrive, they need knowledge.” Promoting to chief master sergeant in 2018 six weeks after arriving at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, provided Selman the opportunity to step into a new role in a new location as USAFEAFAFRICA CBRNE functional manager at Ramstein Air Base. However, the new role wouldn’t deter Selman from doing what he

loved as he found ways to continue leading through instruction. So when the opportunity to teach a CBRNE defense course popped up recently, Selman immediately jumped on it. “It’s just something that I’ve always enjoyed. I want to pass along the knowledge and experience I have, and the passion I have for it,” Selman said. CBRNE defense training, which occurs every 18 months, teaches

Jacob Sargent, USAFEAFAFRICA emergency management and CBRNE program man-

ager. “His career path has been extremely diverse, and that really pays dividends when opportunities like this present themselves.” Before retirement, Selman takes advantage of every opportunity to teach CBRNE courses. “We are training our replacements,” Selman said. “It’s our responsibility as leaders, NCOs, and SNCOs to make sure our Airmen have that knowledge and they see us with that passion.”

Ensuring Ramstein Cybersecurity 86th Communications Squadron The Ramstein Wing Cybersecurity Office consists of 20 personnel assigned to the 86th Communications Squadron, better known as King COMM. This office is the largest of its kind in U. S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa and has one of the busiest and most unique missions in the Air Force. For them, cybersecurity is much more than a catchphrase or a month-long campaign every October; it is a relentless daily challenge of protecting information, the network it resides on, and most importantly, the users that access it. For those assigned to the office, their duties run the gambit from creating Secret Internet Protocol Router Network tokens, inspecting emissions security for classified processing areas, issuing cryptographic communications security material, establishing cybersecurity policy, tracking compliance, vetting IT hardware/software purchases from approved vendors, and much more. They also engage over 480 Cybersecurity Liaisons from various organizations to assist with communication-related needs. The Wing Cybersecurity Office trains and advises these CSLs as their unit’s representative in which they educate and inform assigned personnel on cybersecurity requirements. The CSLs are a critical link in protecting information and accomplishing communicationrelated tasks in an effective and efficient way. The Department of Homeland Security launched National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in

October 2004 as a broad effort to help Americans become safer and more secure online. Education and awareness are the best ways to combat the continuous barrage of cyber threats that exist. With new developments in technology there will always be new associated threats and vulnerabilities. Adopting and implementing those new technologies requires time for testing to understand what may actually be at risk to networks and their users. Cybersecurity is a rigorous, never-ending and high-stakes battle. The rate of technological prowess throughout the world is increasing at unprecedented speeds. With every advancement in securing technological systems, the technology to attack these systems increases as well. Military personnel must remain ever vigilant with regard to the exponentially growing and rapidly evolving threats to our nation’s cybersecurity. With the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency and National Cyber Security Alliance campaign of “Do Your Part. #BECYBERSMART” their goal is to cover a variety of topics that stretch far beyond just the military. The campaign addresses technology in our everyday personal lives and in some ways affects us all. Considerations need to be made for email and password protection, mobile devices, applications, routers, Bluetooth technology, and Wi-Fi enabled devices, to name a few. Service members and their families have become accustomed to living in a world connected through the internet, games, and

Staying secure on Social Media

Graphic by miniaria / Shutterstock.com

by Senior Airman Jeremiah Houghton and Master Sergeant Christopher Parente 86th Communications Squadron It is estimated that 3.8 billion people use social media to some degree in their daily lives. Many would agree that it is a great way to express yourself. Social media platforms offer interactive tools to share personal insights, engage with friends and family, and receive breaking news updates from around the globe in seconds. For some, during the COVID19 pandemic, social media has served as a great distraction, source of information and entertainment, or just a way to connect with others. This capability can be both a blessing and a curse, as there are many security and privacy concerns which may be overlooked by the public. It is easy to keep up with friends from around the globe. It is also just as easy for third parties to collect your sensitive personal data. Have you ever been thinking about a certain product, maybe did a quick web search and then almost immediately saw an advertisement for it? This online phenomenon is known as Targeted Advertising, which is a form of online advertising that focuses on the specific traits, interests, and preferences of a consumer. Advertisers discover this information by tracking your activity on the Internet. What is often overlooked is that these social media platforms are

operated by businesses with the primary goal of making a profit. The easiest way to turn a profit on a platform with billions of users is by placing targeted ads. These types of ads keep track of what websites you visit and how you behave on the internet by creating a profile. You/we are the product. This is just one example of ways in which many websites and platforms are collecting personal information from their users. Some people might say, “Wait, isn’t this an invasion of my privacy?” All users, however, have given permission for these practices of information collection. Many websites require users to agree to the Privacy Policy or End User License Agreement when first creating an account. Even with the standard social media privacy protection practices (i.e. setting all posts to friends only, not disclosing personal information, etc.) these platforms gather personal information behind the scenes. This information can never be guaranteed safe from outside interlopers. For example, in 2018, Facebook’s collection of private information from its users was hacked by outside attackers. At the time, these attackers were able to access the personal information from 50 million Facebook users. These attackers could not only access Facebook accounts, but could also get into any other

application that uses Facebook account credentials to access, such as Spotify and Instagram. No matter which standard internet safety information practices you may employ, your information is still available. No information is guaranteed safe from those who want it. It is

highly recommended to “Stop and Think” about whose hands your information may end up in. Cited sources: • https://www.nytimes. com/2018/09/28/technology/facebook-hack-databreach.html#:~:text=SAN%20

Department of the Air Force family suicide prevention training is now available as a way to educate spouses, partners, adult family members, and loved ones on the signs and symptoms of suicide. The new online training video, Equipping Family Members to Help Airmen in Distress, aims to build and strengthen relationships and connectedness among family members and loved ones. “The Department of the Air Force knows the importance of resilience and taking care of families, who are often the first to sense distress in their Airmen. They are also the key to finding potential solutions to prevent suicide and other issues associated with interpersonal and selfdirected violence,” said Brig. Gen. Claude Tudor, Air Force Integrated

Resilience director. “By developing this inaugural family-based suicide prevention training, we are also enhancing the overall human performance of the family unit. This ultimately keeps our Airmen and Space Professionals mission-ready for whatever our nation requires us to do.” Viewers will learn about options for intervening and how to access available resources. The training stresses the importance of being proactive and developing protective factors like good physical health and nutrition, nurturing spirituality, and creating strong bonds among family members and peers. “Suicide is the leading cause of death among Airmen and Space Professionals, and one loss to suicide is one too many,” said Dr. (Maj.) Jordan Simonson, Air Force Suicide Prevention program man-

ager. “Equipping family members to recognize the signs of distress in their service member, and educating them on the resources available is integral to prevention efforts.” Frequent moves, family separations, and deployments are part of the unique challenges of military life, in addition to the typical stressors most Americans face such as job satisfaction, relationship issues, and financial stressors. “For our warriors, it’s all that and more. So, coming up with a way to engage family members while strengthening their relationships in times of distress is critical to preventing suicide ideation,” Simonson said. The video can be shown in either small group discussions, or to a single viewer using a resource guide and questions for thought. The video also satisfies the requirement for annual suicide prevention training for Key Spouses. “The training will not only help family members identify signs of distress, they will learn about the tools and resources available to help them take care of their Airman and Space Professional,” Simonson said. “While service members have annual training for suicide prevention, it’s just as important that those closest to us are also able to recognize the symptoms of suicide ideation and know where to turn for support.” This new training video complements the Department of the Air Force’s Resilience Tactical Pause, an ongoing exercise to promote connection and engagement among all Airmen and Space Professionals, and break down barriers to seeking mental health assistance.

WIC Overseas offers free supplemental services amid pandemic

Kristin Scherzer, the Women, Infants and Children Overseas regional manager, works in one of the program’s consultation offices at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 5. The program is a Department of Defense nutrition education and supplemental food program that provides multiple benefits like food vouchers, nutrition education and health screenings.

food groups, and depending on the stage of life that the participant is in.” Other WIC Overseas benefits include nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to other base organizations supporting health and wellness. Health screenings are also a part of the program, aiming to promote women’s health during and after pregnancy, healthier birth weights for babies and reduced anemia rates for children. “We like to get one prenatal and one postpartum hemoglobin or hematocrit (level) from our moms,” Scherzer said. “Then for the children, starting at age 1, we test once a year to screen for anemia.” All WIC Overseas counselors are registered nurses, dietitians or other health professionals with a nutrition background. “Some of us have extra training in women’s health or pediatrics,” Scherzer said. “We get a lot of our nurses certified as lactation

women who are formula feeding up to six months after delivery, breastfeeding women up to a year after delivery, infants up to age 1 and children up to age 5. “We really encourage folks to give us a call to see if they qualify,” Scherzer said. “It only takes a few minutes, (where) we ask a few basic questions.” Earnings such as cost-of-living adjustments or housing are not factored into the income criteria, so just because someone may have a higher-paying position doesn’t necessarily mean they will not qualify. One of the program benefits qualifying individuals can receive is drafts, which are similar to vouchers. These vouchers are redeemed at local base commissaries for foods meeting U.S. Department of Agriculture nutrition guidelines. “(Participants) can use them at any of the base commissaries: Baumholder, Vogelweh or Ramstein,” Scherzer said. “We supplement from each of the five main

The Women, Infants and Children Overseas program re-opened its office doors Oct. 1, at Ramstein Air Base, to continue offering free supplemental services to Kaiserslautern Military Community families. Though services never stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic, program participants can now schedule in-person appointments with the WIC Overseas office. “We have a few COVID screening questions to make sure it’s safe for them to come in,” said Kristin Scherzer, WIC Overseas regional manager. “The best way for them to get in touch with us is to give us a call and see if they qualify. If they do, we’ll be happy to set them up with an appointment.”

WIC Overseas is a Department of Defense nutrition education and supplemental food program. The program provides multiple benefits such as food vouchers (or drafts), nutrition education and health screenings to help families save money and lead healthier lives. In order to qualify for enrollment, individuals must be activeduty service members, DOD civilian employees, DOD contractors or dependents who are stationed overseas. Individuals must also meet criteria based on income and household size. “The income guidelines for the WIC Overseas program are, in fact, the highest in the nation,” Scherzer said. “They’re very generous and it’s not rank dependent.” The program specifically aims to support pregnant women up to six weeks after delivery, postpartum

counselors, as well. That helps us educate our families better when they come to us with problems or difficulties with breastfeeding.” Breastfeeding mothers can also take advantage of a hospital-grade breast pump loan service provided by WIC Overseas. The service helps mothers who may not be able to afford breast pumps for the duration of their breastfeeding period. Starting a family or having another child can be a costly life event that comes with many questions and uncertainties, and the WIC Overseas program can be a helpful resource. Its mission is to promote and support healthy babies, healthy pregnancies and healthy children by providing access to nutritious food and beneficial lifestyle choices. “I think the most positive feedback we get from our program is when our families tell us how much the nutrition education we provide helps them make even subtle changes in the way their family eats,” Scherzer said. “It might seem like something very minor, but for them it makes all the difference in the world, and for us, that’s extremely rewarding.” To determine eligibility status and possibly enroll in the WIC Overseas program, call one of the offices to do a short pre-screen over the phone: Ramstein Air Base at DSN 480-4466 or commercial 06371-47-4466, Baumholder Clinic Kaserne at DSN 531-3496 or commercial 0611-143-531-3496 or Kleber Kaserne at DSN 541-5141 or commercial 0611-143-541-5141.

New name, who dis? 7th Combat Weather Squadron by Senior Airman Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 7th Weather Squadron was re-designated as the 7th Combat Weather Squadron, Oct.1. “The only thing that has changed is the name,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Nicholas Reitz, 7th CWS director of operations. “It’s not that our mission has changed, our name just finally reflects our mission. The redesignation was part of a greater effort to align the name and missions of five U.S Army weather support squadrons across the globe.” The 7th CWS’s mission is to provide decision-grade environmental intelligence and combatcredible forces in support of U.S. Army Europe-Africa’s mission. “The U.S. Army does not have an indigenous weather capability and relies on the U.S. Air Force to provide critical weather intelligence at every echelon of its mission,” Reitz said. The 7th CWS provides indispensable weather intelligence to Gen. Christopher Cavoli, U.S. Army Europe-Africa commanding general. They also brief rotary-wing aircrew and combat vehicles before every mission. “We’re the only dedicated U.S. Air Force weather and environmental intelligence organization aligned in direct support to U.S. land component forces in the European and African theaters,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Damien Usita, 7th CWS weather operations manager. The 7th CWS supports all permanently assigned U.S. Army forces in Europe and Africa.

“We integrate, deploy with, and provide direct support to Army command staff, groundbased and aviation units, and airfields,” Reitz said. “The 7th CWS Airmen have to be combat mission-ready at all times because at a moment’s notice they can deploy with their U.S Army counterparts. It’s a balance of “soldier skills” and technical expertise that make our Airmen so lethal.” As the direct line of intelligence for USAREUR and USARAF, the 7th CWS provides roughly 24,000 weather products annually, supporting and protecting approximately 58,000 personnel and $3 billion in assets. “Whether providing staff support, shaping command guidance or providing tactical observations and mission execution forecasts, our team of combat ready professionals ensure that U.S. land component forces are empowered with decision-grade environmental intelligence,” Usita said. “This maintains our advantage over our competitors in support of combat credible forces in the European and African theaters.” Ultimately, the 7th CWS provides an immeasurable strategic advantage to the U.S. Army, exemplifying interoperability, agility and resilience. “We enhance wartime planning by becoming part of the military decision-making process and allow senior leaders to effectively execute operation plans and exercises,” Reitz said. “Accurate weather prediction from the 7th CWS allows USAREUR to deter aggression from adversaries in the European theater.”

The Wright way to fitness

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class John Wright, 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs photojournalist, times participants of the Basic Endurance and Strength Training program at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 25. by Staff Sgt. Jourdan Barrons 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Across the Air Force, units are still adhering to COVID19 restrictions which have postponed Physical Fitness Assessments for Airmen until January 2021. With Airmen looking for ways to improve fitness and maintain readiness, one Ramstein Airman helps others reach their goals as a Basic Endurance and Strength Training coach. “The BEAST program is intended to help Airmen who want to improve their PT scores,” Airman 1st Class John Wright, 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs photojournalist said. “It’s also for anyone who wants to

improve their overall level of fitness and health.” BEAST is an eight-week program that focuses on strength conditioning and endurance. Wright helps plan workouts that fit into COVID-19 restrictions. “We make sure everyone physically distances themselves during the warm-ups and cool-downs,” Wright said. “To accomplish this during the workout, we split them up into smaller groups and have developed a buddy system where two to three people typically work together.” The buddy system allows members to pace each other and motivate each other without being in a large group. Members can find someone to push them

or someone who can keep them consistent. “People are less likely to quit and give up when they have someone next to them pushing them to keep going,” Wright said. In addition to planning workouts, Wright also coaches individuals to help them meet their goals. He explained that maintaining fitness standards and health are important to him. “You need to be ready at all times,” Wright said. “You never know when you’ll be in a scenario that requires physical fitness. You might be in a situation where your peers are depending on you, and if you’re not ready for that task, you risk letting your team down.” Wright received his Personal

Trainer Certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine in 2018. He furthered his education in fitness by earning another certification as a weight loss specialist in 2020. “I got into fitness because I enjoy working out and challenging myself. I like setting goals and then accomplishing them,” Wright said. He now has a chance to inspire others and help them achieve their desired fitness. “I enjoy watching people make progress and push themselves to accomplish things they didn’t realize they could,” Wright said. “It’s always fun to see the pride on their face when they reach that goal.” Seventy-eight percent of

the program’s 30 participants improved their run time. “BEAST is a wing-recognized fitness program,” said 1st Lt. Dean Naldrett, 86th Medical Group practice manager and BEAST lead. “Having someone with a background in fitness and nutrition has been a big help in the planning stages.” Wright plans to continue meeting for a workout group even though the eight-week BEAST program is finished. “The program may look a little different, but as long as people show an interest, I’ll keep coaching them,” Wright said. The next BEAST program is scheduled to start in November 2020 in order to help Airmen prepare for upcoming Physical Fitness Assessments.

With COVID-19, complacency is the enemy by Kirk Frady Regional Health Command Europe As the winter season approaches and temperatures drop, most of us will begin spending more time indoors around family and friends. As such, healthcare officials warn that now is not the time to become complacent and let down your guard when it comes to COVID. As much of Europe is in the midst of a second wave of the novel coronavirus, public health experts are concerned about the situation worsening with the start of the flu season. European health officials warn the combination of two highly infectious respiratory outbreaks occurring simultaneously would put an unimaginable strain on the overall healthcare system. “As everyone knows, cases are on the rise across all of our host nations, and as a result, we are seeing a similar increase in our populations,” said Col. Rodney Coldren, director of Preventive Medicine Services for Public Health Command Europe. “Over the past few months, we have typically seen sporadic COVID cases with occasional super spreading events. However, we are now seeing a slow, but steady, stream of cases in all of our locations across Europe. (Department of Defense Education Activity Europe) schools, military health clinics and dental clinics even had to suspend their normal or routine operations. I do not believe that the second wave is going to get any less severe anytime soon.” Recent surveys conducted in the U.S. indicate that many people think that just wearing a facemask is protection enough. According to medical experts, while facemasks can decrease the risk of infection, both for the wearer and as source control, they are not protective enough to have any bearing on being in what is considered a close contact. The bottom line is, being in

close contact, or proximity, with someone for an extended period of time presents a threat to all those involved. So what is considered a close contact and an extended period of time? “As a general guideline, close contact is defined as being less than six feet apart for more than 15 minutes (cumulative),” Coldren added. “Being outdoors at rest (not exercising) at this distance is likely quite protective. However, being in a poorlyventilated room for a long time is not particularly protective.” “Remember, the closer you get, the less time is required,” said Coldren. “You don’t have to engage in a 15 minute hug to be considered a close contact. Likewise, if you are in a

meeting in a closed room for an hour, six feet really isn’t sufficient separation between individuals. It’s really a judgement call, but coworkers and individuals in conference or meeting rooms often will be considered close contacts for the purpose of quarantining.” Health officials warn that most COVID cases are caused by a minority of infected individuals. COVID explodes via super spreader events, or large gatherings of people, and that’s why identifying and quarantining close contacts is so important. “The danger is that when we quarantine those who are considered ‘close contacts’ and

they end up all testing negative, some people might think we over-reacted and that we labeled too many people as close contacts,” said Coldren. “A few studies have shown that most infected people only end up infecting household contacts, yet not infecting any of their other so-called close contacts. The problem is that we have no way of knowing who is a super spreader and who isn’t.” So what can and should individuals do to protect themselves and those around them this winter? “As we all try to adjust to life under the ‘new normal’, that doesn’t mean returning to life as U.S. & GERMAN ATTORNEYS U.S. & GERMAN DIVORCES • SUPPORT ISSUES • EEO WILLS & PROBATE • EMPLOYMENT • PERSONAL INJURY MSPB • CONTRACTOR ISSUES • TAX ADVISORS

we knew it pre-COVID,” Coldren said. “Remember, anything done virtually is the safest and anything done outdoors is better than indoors. However, if you absolutely do need to accomplish something in person or face-toface, the shorter amount of time and the further apart you are with others the better. And yes, by all means, please wear a mask, but don’t rely on it alone.” “Of course, the best protection against COVID by far, is to not be too close to someone who has it. We all know how to keep this beast in check, we simply cannot let our guard down,” concluded Coldren.

Hidden heroes: Safety Office advocates for employees, protects workforce Story and photo by Keith Pannell USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs The job of the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Safety Office is to make the work environment safer for garrison employees. It sounds simple. It’s not. “We protect the workforce, the Soldiers, the family members, (and) ensure the facilities, events, buildings and anything the garrison owns is safe from hazards,” said Leah Holly, acting Garrison Safety Office director. “We identify hazards, potential hazards and apply mitigations to them.” The five-member office (four in Kaiserslautern, one in Baumholder) looks at safety mitigations for potential hazards in garrison facilities, unit and Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation events, schools from Sembach to Baumholder and at sites in the Black Sea area. The inspectors say it’s true, they can be bearers of bad news, but they remind everyone who

safety regulations are “written in blood.” “I learned this from my first supervisor a long time ago,” said Herb Nold, safety inspector for almost 40 years. “For every safety regulation in a book, hundreds had to have been injured or killed for that to become a regulation.” The safety team says many of the infractions they see are due to complacency. “I think it comes down to, ‘I’ve been doing this job twenty years, I know it, I know the hazards of it and I know I can do it faster than the regs say' or 'I don’t need to wear my personal protection equipment,’” said Todd Lewis, garrison safety inspector. “There’s a reason the procedure is that way. It’s to avoid hazard and injury.” The inspectors’ jobs changed dramatically in March with the COVID-19 pandemic. “When the pandemic first started, we spent a lot of time making sure the Deployment Processing Center, the unit quarantine bar-

racks and even family housing units set aside for quarantining families were safe,” said Nold. “We had to make sure everyone was following the guidance and not mixing possible positive cases with those who were unaffected. There were hundreds of Soldiers in the DPC at any one time, and it also was the beginning of the summer PCS season.” In the beginning of the pandemic, the U.S. had one set of COVID guidelines and the host nation had a different set of rules — with both being adhered to for safety. The safety team went around the garrison making sure local national employees were taken care of as much of U.S. employees. When garrison leadership made decisions to slowly start reopening facilities near the beginning of summer, it brought a different set of challenges. “When facilities like the fitness centers, Java Cafes, the Education Center and even Child and Youth Services among others, wanted to

open up, we were very busy making sure all of the signage, hand cleaning stations and things like that were in place,” Nold said. ”We also looked at work stations being socially distanced within offices and proper barriers were in place to protect employees and customers.” One aspect stateside safety inspectors don’t deal with is the duality between U.S. laws and host nation laws. Many times the safety laws parallel each other. Once in a while, they don’t. “The host nation employees are the continuity to the office,” Holly said. “They are the encyclopedias of not only host nation laws, but American regulations.” The safety inspectors say one of the most difficult parts of their jobs, before the pandemic, was overcoming the stereotype of safety inspectors trying to ruin events. “People think we’re coming into their office or into their event planning to make their lives harder,” Lewis said. “In reality, we are advocates for the workforce. Our job is to make them safe and push those requests up the chain of command.” “A lot of times, I’ll ask an office to ‘tell me what is wrong,’” Holly said. “Honest answers will shed light on problem areas and you may be able to move to the beginning of the DPW line for service orders or you may get money to buy safety supplies or ergonomic furniture.” Whether issues are simple or complex, the inspectors say they want to know about them. Whether it’s needing steel-toed boots, a pad to stand on at a desk or an ergonomic chair for a bad back, they want to hear about it. “There’s a saying in the safety office that, ‘Safety is expensive,’ because it always costs money,” Lewis said. “What we say is, ‘It’s not expensive, it’s priceless.’ Would you rather pay for an ergonomic chair or back surgery?”

Halloween

Kaiserslautern American

for Dogs

Page 19

Photo by Susan Schmitz / Shutterstock.com

by MilitaryinGermany.com Halloween is a fun time for the whole family, including the dogs, as long as you take certain precautions. Halloween for dogs could potentially be a very stressful and unpleasant time for them.

Human treats

One of our all-time favorite Halloween treats — chocolate — is considered poisonous to dogs. It contains a chemical, methylxanthine, which is very toxic for them. The darker the chocolate the higher the concentration. Candy may be artificially sweetened with xylitol which is also highly toxic. Even ordinary highsugar, high-fat candy in large amounts can be bad and in certain cases could lead to pancreatitis. Party snacks can be too salty, or

may contain other ingredients too risky for your dog’s health. One of the most dangerous aspects of candy could be the wrappers! Dogs don’t bother unwrapping the candy before gobbling down as much as they can, and ingested cellophane or foil wrappers could cause a life-threatening blockage. Some people will prefer to have healthy snacks and treats. These can also be extremely poisonous to dogs! Raisins and grapes should be treated with the same caution as chocolate when it comes to pets. It’s possible that even small amounts can cause kidney failure in certain cases. If you’re not sure you can keep your dog away from all these tempting treats, then confine him to a safe part of the house away from the festivities. And make sure you have some doggie treats on hand for him – but don’t over treat!

Decorations

Try to keep all those fun and scary decorations away from where they can be easily chewed or bumped over. Candles can burn inquisitive noses or cause a fire if knocked over. Power cables could trip up your dog or lead to electrical shock and injuries if chewed.

Costumes

I have to admit that I’m not a big fan of dressing up dogs! But I know a lot of people are, and many dogs also seem to enjoy all the attention they get when dressed up. It’s a great time to let your imagination run wild in designing something cute and clever but do make sure it doesn’t stress your dog and that they are safe and comfortable in it. If the costume is too tight it

Photo by Javier Brosch / Shutterstock.com

could cut off circulation, restrict breathing or vision, or cause sores and irritation. If too loose, it could get caught on something or trip up the dog. The dog could also tear of bits of the costume and ingest them, leading to risks of intestinal blockages, choking or stomach irritation. It’s best to never leave your dog alone when dressed up in a costume.

Trick-or-Treaters

Even sociable dogs accustomed to visitors may find all the doorbell ringing and lots of strangers stressful, or become overexcited. Some dogs may also be frightened of people they know if they are in costumes and look very different. It might be best to

keep him away from the door. Halloween for dogs could be just as much fun for them as Halloween for you! Keep your furry friends safe this Halloween season. Dogs who usually spend most of their time outside should be kept inside. Unfortunately there are some people who will take tricks to extreme and cruel lengths with your pet possibly being the victim. Also make sure your pet has ID on him. And if you suspect any injury or poisoning has occurred, get him to your vet as soon as possible.

Have a safe and happy Halloween! These tips were submitted by: www.happyhealthydogblog.com

Page 20 by MilitaryinGermany.com Koblenz combines two features that are fundamental to Germany: history and beauty. This is a city, after all, that was founded by the Romans, and that celebrated 2,000 years of continued existence…in 1992. This is also a place where two of Germany’s most famous rivers, the Rhine and the Mosel, meet: Koblenz is derived from the Latin word for “confluence.” With so much water, the hills, riverside, and land surrounding Koblenz teem with life. But it is what Koblenz offers that makes the city worth seeing: plainly put, Koblenz will entertain you and enlighten you. A short list of things to do It makes sense that transportation is important in Koblenz. After all, goods and services have been transited and traded up and down the rivers for two millennia. Here’s a list of to-do’s in Koblenz that will get you and your fellow travelers in motion. Stroll the Rheinanlagen. The Rheinanlagen, or Rhine Gardens Park, offers a 3.5-kilometer stroll along the banks of the Rhine river. It’s brilliant any of time of the year, with parks and well-manicured greenery nestled next to the water. Ride the Koblenz cable car…to an awesome cliff-top for-

tress. The Koblenz cable car takes visitors more than 300 feet upward, across the Rhine River, and to the famous Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. The fortress offers astounding views, a great park for children, and a chance to wander the fortress grounds. Keep your eye on this one. Especially relevant for those who appreciate military history, the Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung Koblenz, or Scientific Collection of Defence Engineering Specimens,

houses an excellent collection of defense-related items. Unfortunately, the collection is currently closed for COVID-related reasons. But check their website before you go to Koblenz to see if things have changed. The one thing you have to see: The Deutsches Eck Seeing the Deutsches Eck from the bluff above Koblenz is impressive: a triangular platform juts like a stone arrowhead into the dark water where the Rhine and Mosel rivers meet.

However, seeing it from that platform is even more impressive. When you’re there, faced with the dark flowing water, you get a true sense of the depth that exists in Koblenz. You’ll feel a connection to generations of human beings who have stood in that exact spot, just gazing at the water and letting it lead their imaginations downstream. As a bonus, the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial, located in the same spot, is pretty incredible, too.

Getting there By car Koblenz is one hour and thirty minutes north of Kaiserslautern, just of one hour northwest of Wiesbaden and just over three hours northwest of Stuttgart. Visit the Deutsche Bahn website for train information. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies, when it comes to travel.
