Leaders from the 86th Airlift Wing brief Gen. Tod Wolters, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Kaleth Wright, USAFE-AFAFRICA command chief, during an immersion tour of the 86th Airlift Wing Nov. 1 on Ramstein. Wolters and Wright visited different units around Ramstein during the immersion, where they recognized outstanding Airmen for their contributions to the mission.

Courtesy of 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Gen. Tod D. Wolters, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander, visited the men and women of the 86th Airlift Wing Nov. 1, citing the wing’s operations and successes as a model, ranking it as the best he has seen in a career spanning more than three decades. “I live on Ramstein, and this is renowned as a great installation,” Wolters said. “I’m here to tell you that it has just gotten better. This is the most squared away wing that I have ever seen in the history of my service to the United States Air

Force. Its pieces and parts, and the sum that they create, are something that no other defense service will be able to replicate in our lifetimes.” Credit goes to the men and women of the 86th that make this possible, Wolters added. “It’s a testament to all of you; it’s a testament to our 21st century Air Force,” Wolters said. Infrastructure resiliency was the theme for visits to several Ramstein units, which included stops at the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Water Plant and the 86th Operations Support Squadron Air Traffic Control Tower. Wolters was particularly impressed by the caliber of Airmen

he met during these visits. “I was briefed by a staff sergeant this morning, and I guarantee you that when I was a lieutenant colonel running a squadron, I was about half as smart and half as articulate as that staff sergeant,” Wolters said. “That’s the talent that our Air Force brings in today. And because we train so hard, we molded and grew that young Airman into a staff sergeant. And before you know it, you’ve got someone who is 26 years old, and they are talking to you with the same maturity and sageness of a CEO of a billion dollar corporation. That’s us. … That’s you. And we need to take advantage of that. We need to make

sure that we’re so good that nobody wants to come out and fight you.” Staff Sgt. Joshua Moore, 86th Medical Support Squadron pharmacy technician, was among those who briefed Wolters. Moore’s team developed an innovative solution to the needs of the flying community for high-altitude missions, and shared his story with Wolters. “It was awesome and rewarding,” Moore said. “It really shows a lot, coming from our leadership, when they recognize our team for what they do. We place a lot of pride in what we do at the pharmacy, and we See SucceSS, Page 2

other’s skills, knowledge, training, research and development, and equipment in the law enforcement field for the benefit of those being served.” The relationship between local national police and Air Force security forces play a crucial part to keeping U.S. service members and civilians safe. “This award comes from a prestigious association of international police leaders and means a great

deal to the law enforcement officers of both the 569 USFPS and Polizeipraesidium Westpfalz,” Adrian said. “It recognizes the fantastic relationship between the Status of Forces Agreement and host nation populations in the Kaiserslautern Military Community and how we team up every day as part of our combined community. This is also the first time that this award has been bestowed upon an international partnership, so

this makes both departments all the more proud to receive this accolade.” At a press conference Oct. 28 at Polizeipraesidium Westpfalz headquarters in Kaiserslautern, the two units presented the award to the public. The 569 USFPS and Polizeipraesidium Westpfalz distinguished themselves through outstanding cooperation in support of law enforcement operations in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. During this time, the two agencies crossed the divide between military and civilian law enforcement agencies in order to provide a safer joint community, comprised of 335,000 German and American citizens, according to the citation accompanying the award. “Both agencies have incredible police officers and professionals,” Adrian said. “Based on these relationships, we are able to better learn from one another as well as operate a combined and truly cohesive team, especially while responding to help members in our community, alongside one another.” The partnership between the two units ensures the safety and security of the KMC by patrolling the downtown bar district, canvasing neighborhoods during a spree of serial burglaries and engaging in emergency services during manning shortfalls.

are grateful to be recognized.” Tech. Sgt. Samuel Stroman, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron, briefed Wolters on his unit’s efforts to instill pride and ownership in first-term Airmen through the beautification of the installation. “I was honored and ecstatic to brief COMUSAFE and highly appreciative knowing that what we do on a daily basis does not go unnoticed,” Stroman said. “We try to convey to our Airmen how important they are to the mission’s success. Today’s experience solidified my efforts in

this belief to maintain excellence in all we do.” The tour concluded with an allcall with hundreds of Airmen of the Mighty 86th, where Wolters emphasized his priorities of trust, teamwork, and training. The language leaders use, down to particular pronouns, are of particular importance in promoting teamwork, said Wolters. “I very rarely hear a conversation about success on this installation and the use of the word ‘I’ and ‘me,’” Wolters said. “Every time I talk to the great Airmen on this base in this wing, what I hear is ‘they did it’ (and) ‘we did it.’”

Such language allows teams to grow and thrive in shared successes and is the language of champions, Wolters said. First Lt. Alane Schwartz, vehicle operations flight commander with the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron, attended the all-call and agreed that it takes a team to accomplish the mission. “This is my first assignment as a flight commander, and this was personally valuable for how I can grow as a leader in today’s Air Force,” Schwartz said. “But it’s not about us as leaders. It’s about working together as a team. We are not alone

in what we do to accomplish the mission. My folks support USAFE and AFAFRICA missions each and every day. We may not touch the aircraft, but we are part of a team that makes our mission so successful.” Adversaries should take great caution if they ever make the unwise decision to confront Team Ramstein Airmen, said Wolters. “It starts with you, the world’s greatest Airmen,” Wolters said. “Because of your demonstrated successes, I am absolutely, positively convinced that if the enemy has to fight you, they’ll lose. You’re just that good.”

The 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron joined local police in receiving an award for cooperation, which was the first time such an award had been given to an international partnership. The International Association of Chiefs of Police awarded their 2016 Civilian Law Enforcement — Military Cooperation Award to the 569 USFPS and the Polizeipraesidium Westpfalz in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Representatives from both units were on hand at the IACP conference Oct. 16 in San Diego, California. “This award recognizes excellence in law enforcement cooperation between civilian and military law enforcement agencies in developing innovative joint efforts that lead to improvement in public safety for both military and civilian communities,” said Capt. John-Paul Adrian, 569 USFPS operations officer. “It is bestowed on two partner law enforcement organizations, one military; one civilian, each year by a subcommittee of the IACP. The goal of the committee is to foster a closer relationship between the civilian and military law enforcement disciplines so that each can take mutual advantage of the success, from Page 1

Ramstein community builds bonds with EOD ruck, run Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 786th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal flight conducted a Halloween-themed ruck and run event Oct. 28 on Ramstein. EOD Airmen conduct ruck marches on the last Friday of every month as one of the ways to keep themselves ready for their mission. October’s ruck march was a special one, not only because of its theme but also because it was made to support the Combined Federal CampaignOverseas. The event was a good chance to do something different for physical training, and to support a charitable cause a participant may care about, said Airman 1st Class Anthony Griffin, 786 CES EOD apprentice. “The purpose of the ruck and run was to promote good physical and mental health, as well as raise money for the CFC,” Griffin said. “I did not expect the amount of people that showed up mainly because we started to advertise so close to the event date, but I was happy to see everyone come out and support us and the CFC.” Two events which supplemented the ruck and run were a 6-foot wall climb and gas can carry. Participants set out in pairs, and the fastest teams to finish the course were given prizes.

Participants in the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron’s explosive ordnance disposal ruck and run complete their final lap Oct. 28 on Ramstein. Although 786 CES’s EOD flight conducts ruck marches every month, the October ruck and run was a special Halloween-themed event designed to support the Combined Federal Campaign.

Griffin was proud of the turnout for the event, saying the social bonds formed were just as important as the physical benefits gained from the event. “Seeing the event come and pass has been rewarding,” Griffin said. “Not only did it promote the physical and mental pillars of the Air Force; it also helped promote the social pillar. I believe camaraderie was built between everyone.” There are times during deployments when EOD Airmen have to hike to the location of their mission and must be physically and men-

tally ready, said Staff Sgt. Andrew Trelly, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal craftsman. “I have been in a situation where the missions required me to walk long distances with my gear in my pack,” Trelly said. “It definitely keeps me ready and focused on what I have done and what I can possibly do. There are a lot of places we have been to as a career field where you cannot take a vehicle, so we have to be able to whittle down the gear that we would need in order to actually physically carry it out, get to the objec-

Honoring our best on Veterans Day by Brig. Gen. Richard G. Moore, Jr. Commander, 86th Airlift Wing On this Veterans Day, please join me in thanking and honoring every Airman, Soldier, Sailor and Marine who has served our great nation. On Veterans Day, we honor all who have served in the military and thank them for their service and sacrifice. We remember the courage it takes to defend honor, duty, and our country. We remember the achievements of our heroes, their courage and their dedication, and we say thank you for their sacrifice. Each of you has come from a different walk of life. But as a veteran, and as a fellow Airman in the Mighty 86th, you share the same fundamental qualities needed to serve a cause larger than your own: courage, determination, selflessness, pride, dedication to duty and integrity. I thank you for the hard work you display each and every day and for the sacrifices you have made in defending our country. I thank your families, for making your service possible and for providing the strength back home we all need to protect the freedoms we cherish. Please have an amazing Veterans Day, be safe and thank you for what you do!

tive, complete the objective and then return.” Besides helping physically prepare for potential missions, hiking as a unit fosters a sense of camaraderie that might prove helpful in difficult situations. The ruck marches teach the Airmen to depend on each other for mutual support and to execute pillars of resiliency, said Capt. Catherine Robertson, 786 CES EOD flight commander. “There are times when we have to rely on the person next to us to get us to wherever our operation is,” Robertson said. “Doing these rucks and staying with a wingman are vital to us executing our mission.” “It helps because you get to mingle with other units,” Robertson said. “You get to meet people that you may not

see on a daily basis, build a network. It’s important that we get folks together and do this on a monthly basis. “In this way, we can rally people across the wing, across the base and bring everybody out for just a little fun,” Robertson continued. “Get out of the office, get out of the regular day-to-day activities and be better at fitness while you’re doing it.” Whether the individuals participating in the ruck march belong to EOD or not, the objective can apply to all Airmen: to stay ready and get better. “As a career field we have learned lessons from the past,” Trelly said. “We will not forget those lessons we have learned; we will continue to strive to be able to support the mission no matter what it may be.”

Children learn about ‘stranger danger,’ how to identify ‘good guys’ Story and photos by Senior Airman Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Children attending the Kuk Sool Won martial arts class on Ramstein recently learned valuable techniques to avoid and evade strangers, as well as how to identify first responders who can help in emergencies. Thirteen children had the opportunity to meet with members assigned to the 86th Security Forces Squadron and 86th Civil Engineer Squadron fire department and learn how to identify them in public. “It’s important for the kids to know who they can go to for help,” said Mike Grimes, 603rd Air and Space Operations Center weapon system manager and Kuk Sool Won martial arts class instructor. “That was the purpose of bringing in members of security forces and the fire department to interact with the class.” With the intention of teaching kids how to identify security forces members, Staff Sgt. Calin Cronin, 86 SFS installation patrolman, spoke about some of the identifiable features of a security forces member’s uniform. “We have two different uniforms, the blue bike patrol uniform and the traditional Airman Battle Uniform,” Cronin said. “We also may be wearing radios, guns, handcuffs or a police vest.” While building trust between children and emergency responders, Grimes also wants to make sure families continue to teach their children about safety around strangers. “On a military installation we get complacent in teaching kids about dealing with strangers and who to go to because we feel safe,” Grimes said. “In the real world, bad things

happen, and we need to make sure our children are prepared.” One way to ensure that kids are prepared for these scenarios is to work with them on an occasional basis. “It comes down to training or just putting the ideas into (children’s) heads,” Cronin said. “Do things like practice fire alarms and drills, and ask them who to call in certain situations.” After the first ever addition of bringing in first responders to the class ended in success, Grimes wants to continue the addition for future classes. “Overall I think the class went well,” Grimes said. “It was good information for everybody and the parents liked it. Portuguese partnership supports 65th Air Base Group mission

An Airman tracks incoming flights Oct. 5 at Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal. The 65th Air Base Group enables expeditionary movement of warfighters, warplanes and global communications to combatant commanders, and supports joint coalition and NATO operations to promote partnerships.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Nicole Keim 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs LAJES FIELD, Portugal — Wheels go up as aircraft emerge into the blue sky over the choppy Atlantic abyss. Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal, is a critical piece of the 86th Airlift Wing mission to provide airlift capabilities around the globe. “There are only a few islands that actually exist in the middle of the Atlantic,” said Col. Dan Furleigh, 65th Air Base Group commander. “It is almost halfway between the continental United States and Europe, and this is the only one that has a 10,800 ft. runway that we land airplanes on, and have for nearly 70 years.” Six hours away from its parent wing at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, the unit is home to nearly 600 Airmen including local nationals. With its long

history, heritage is rich within the small community of the Island. One of the pieces to that foundation is the partnership that holds the mission together. “Without our partnership with the Portuguese, we wouldn’t be able to accomplish the mission,” Furleigh said. “The opportunities to work sideby-side with them are few but are extremely important. They run a 24/7 airfield that we have access to and assist in managing to ensure we are flowing traffic to and from areas that are strategically important.” The 65th Air Base Group enables expeditionary movement of warfighters, warplanes and global communications to combatant commanders. They also support joint coalition and NATO operations to promote partnerships. The location of this base is not the only thing that makes this assignment special, said Furleigh.

An Airman assigned to the 65th Security Forces Squadron simulates securing a room Oct. 5 at Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal. Leaders from the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein visited Airmen at Lajes to thank them for their service and tour the base.

“This is so unique because it’s such a small community,” Furleigh said. “All of our Airmen here are on 12-month unaccompanied assignments. The small community and size of the force put a huge emphasis on teamwork here. You typically have Airmen that are coming into jobs at a lower level or grade than what they would normally find at a larger installation. ... They have leadership opportunities that they otherwise wouldn’t see.” The small size of the force at Lajes does not stop Airmen from fulfilling all of the duties required to provide a platform for airpower. “It’s a different challenge every day because there are so few people. ... There’s a lot of wearing different hats,” said Senior Airman Ryan Matthews, 65th Operations Support Squadron radar maintenance journeyman. “That isn’t necessarily all bad because the operations tempo is still maintainable.

However, it is interesting when someone (is working one job on one day, and a different job the next).” The strategic location of Lajes plays a huge role in flight success over the Atlantic, said Matthews. “We have to be ready here and open to meet any needs over the Atlantic,” Matthews said. “I think our mission really shines through. For example, during an in-flight emergency, if someone flies over the Atlantic, half-way across the ocean and something goes wrong. A few months ago an aircraft had some trouble. Had they not been able to land at Lajes, they might have coasted into the ocean.” Whether it’s the relationship Airmen build with the Portuguese, the emergency services it provides to aircraft across the Atlantic, or flowing aircraft to and from crucial missions, Lajes remains a vital cog in the 86th Airlift Wing mission.

Air traffic controllers watch the flightline Oct. 5 at Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal. Six hours away from its parent wing at Ramstein, this geographically separated unit is home to more than 600 Airmen, including local nationals who serve there.

Pilot grounded, life rebuilt by Senior Airman Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs “I remember the ride up the mountain in the van,” he recollected with some effort. “I recall the room you get ready in. I had (my equipment), and I remember prior to putting on my boots. As far as I remember, I have never put on my ski boots in New Zealand.” Kevin Ormsby, former Air Force pilot, had seemingly lost everything after a life-changing ski accident in New Zealand that rendered him unable to fly. While stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, as an instructor pilot, Ormsby visited New Zealand to ski with members of the U.S. Olympic Freestyle Ski Team. After starting his second run on July 29, 2002, he was found unconscious. “No one there saw the accident. I’m not exactly sure what happened,” said Ormsby, who is currently stationed at Ramstein. “They just found

me lying in the snow.” With no witnesses to the accident and no recollection of it himself, he regained consciousness in the middle of September 2002 at a hospital in

Palo Alto, California, with a broken bone, torn ligaments and a severe brain injury. “I had shattered the bone and tore the medial collateral ligament in my

left knee, and tore the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus cartilage in both my knees,” Ormsby said. “The brain injury I had sustained was accompanied by double vision which still affects me today.” Due to the severity of his brain injury, he couldn’t pinpoint the exact moment he started making conscious decisions. “I don’t exactly remember when my first lucid thought was, because I was in and out for a while,” Ormsby said. “I remember sometime in October that year I told myself, as soon as everything is fixed physically, I’ll be good to get back into the jet.” Ormsby was released from the hospital in 2003. He felt he wasn’t the same person he had been prior to the ski trip. After losing close friends, his comfort zone and his job, in 2004 he had a brief encounter with suicidal thoughts. Brian Ketz, 16th STB Commander. “The Soldiers of 569th are ready to execute its vital responsibilities and will succeed.” The new unit’s command team, Capt. Katherine Hansen and 1st Sgt. Ronald Steele, unfurled its just-designated guidon during the ceremony. “Standing up a new company is a journey and sometimes unpredict-

able, as courses of action for upcoming missions change almost daily,” Steele said. “We are about to make history and set the stage for human resources companies Army-wide.” The new company is one of only 12 human resources companies in the Army, and the variety and prominence of missions in the European theater highlight its importance. “Having the first human resources company for Installation Management Command and Central Command, we’ll enhance those exercises and missions throughout Europe,” Hansen said. “Having new Soldiers as we stand up a new

company gives them an idea of how organizations are formed, and they’ll set high standards for future Soldiers.” The company will provide expeditionary human resources support, personnel accountability, casualty liaison, and postal support in Europe for the 16th Sustainment Brigade. Junior Soldiers seemed to appreciate the significance of the moment. “Activating the 569th is more than what everyone sees,” said Spc. Antonette Brown, a human resources specialist with the company. “The Soldiers will be remembered as the foundation of something great.”

Little teeth, big smiles: children visit dental squadron Photos by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer

Ben LeNeave and his daughter, Emma, fill out a pre-appointment form during the 86th Dental Squadron’s “Little Teeth, Big Smiles” event Nov. 5 on Ramstein. The event was a way for children up to 10 years old to get their teeth checked or cleaned in an environment tailored to their age group. According to the Center for Disease and Control, tooth decay is one of the most common chronic conditions of childhood in the United States. Untreated cavities can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing and learning.

Capt. Heather Rybar, 86th Dental Squadron general dentist, talks to her patient, Emma LeNeave, during the 86th Dental Squadron’s “Little Teeth, Big Smiles” event Nov. 5 on Ramstein. The event invited parents to bring their children, up to 10 years old, in to receive a dental checkup and cleaning.

rebuilt, from Page 8

“I was frustrated because I could tell I was different, and I had lost everything,” Ormsby said. “I had no future. Everything I had was gone. I kept thinking, ‘I’ve got nothing. No one will care if I’m gone.’” The next decision he made seemed to have come out of nowhere but felt like a natural reaction. “I had an impulse to pick up the phone and call for help,” Ormsby said. “The decision must have come from all the suicide training that explained what to watch out for and who to call.” After picking up the phone, Ormsby continued in the military for seven more years after the accident while rebuilding himself in hopes to get back in the air. The thoughts of getting back in the jet were just false hopes, he explained. “I was told that it was highly improbable for me to get back in the jet,” Ormsby said. “But what I wasn’t told was that it was impossible, so I continued to think I could.” In 2008, while stationed at Osan Air Base, South Korea, hearing the jets take off, he realized he wouldn’t be able to fly again, but continued to contribute as he could. Although he was never cleared to fly again, Ormsby attributes his recovery toward his desire to return to the sky. “My recovery was due in good part to my desire to get back to flying, which I had worked hard to get into in the first place,” Ormsby said. “Even though in the long run my double vision made flying a complete impossibility, I was able to excel and be a dynamic member of the units I worked in.” In 2009 Ormsby was separated from the Air Force and he moved back to his home town in Truckee, California, where he was a ski instructor for two years. “I had been applying to jobs before I left the military but hadn’t yet received a job offer,” Ormsby said. “As much as I love skiing, I realized that instructing was just a temporary thing.” Ormsby applied for many jobs throughout Europe and eventually was accepted into his current position as a U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces in Africa long-term planner. With his life rebuilt and his future ahead of him, Ormsby recounts how far he has come since the accident. “It’s been miraculous,” Ormsby said. “The doctors told my parents I was going to be a vegetable for the rest of my life. Then they told them I would be dependent for the rest of my life. Now, look at me. I am living by myself in Germany, thrilled with my career and excited to see where it takes me next.” Ormsby shares his story with people because he feels it could make a difference in their lives. “It’s like we’ve been told, ‘Every Airman has their story,’” Ormsby said. “Mine was, ‘I lost everything, but I didn’t lose a life.’ Now I hope to leave a positive influence on others.”

Pork Filet

with Mushroom Cream Sauce

Ingredients (for 4 people) 2 pounds pork filets Approx. 1 pound fresh mushrooms 1 cup liquid cream ¼ cup finely diced onions ¼ cup chopped parsley 4 tablespoons vegetable oil Cut the filets into 1 inch thick slices. Brush off the dirt from the mushrooms. In a nonstick pan, add oil and roast the filets on both sides for 2 minutes on high medium heat. Season the filets with salt and pepper and put them in a preheated oven at 100-120 degrees Celsius. In the same pan, roast the mushrooms and then the onions on high heat for 2-3 minutes. If the mushrooms are really large, cut them in half or even quarters. Add salt and pepper to your taste. Add the liquid cream and reduce the heat to medium. Add the filets to the pan and let simmer for 5 minutes. Add the chopped parsley to the sauce.

A great side dish for this is Spaetzle. You can buy them at the commissary or on the economy or make them from scratch. Roasted potatoes are also a nice choice with this meal. You can also add peas and carrots as a second side dish. It is important to not add all of the liquid in the jars when heating these vegetables up. Just a tablespoon of liquid and a tablespoon of butter should be added to the vegetables. Season to taste and heat for 5 minutes.

Biggest ammo shipment in 20 years arrives in Germany

A driver at the port of Nordenham, Germany, places a container of ammunition onto waiting train cars. More than 600 containers of mixed Army and Air Force ammunition was shipped to Germany and moved to Miesau Army Depot for storage and distribution across Europe. This is the largest Army-run ammo shipment in Europe for more than 20 years.

Story and photos by Sgt. 1st Class Jacob McDonald 21st Theater Sustainment Command NORDENHAM, Germany — The largest single Army-run shipment of ammunition to Europe in more than two decades, over 600 shipping containers worth, arrived in Germany Oct. 29. The Army and Air Force ammunition arrived at the port in Nordenham, Germany, where it was loaded onto trains and shipped to Miesau Army Depot, Germany, for storage and distribution. “The shipment by itself is special because it’s over 620 containers,” said Lt. Col. Brad Culligan, commander, 838th Transportation Battalion, Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, “We continue to build up the presence in Europe.

This will help with reassuring our allies, along with the common defense of Europe if needed.” Reassuring European allies by increasing the readily available ammunition also increases the readiness of U.S. forces stationed in Europe. “This is about deterrence,” said Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, commanding general, U.S. Army Europe. “We could have 1,000 tanks over here, but if we didn’t have the ammunition for them they would not have any deterrent effect. It’s another example of the commitment of the United States to security and stability in Europe.” Culligan, who oversaw the transfer of the cargo from the ship to trains said the mission required an immense amount of coordination from multiple entities. “The ship actually belongs to Military Sea Lift Command,” Culligan said. “It’s a Military Sea

A container full of ammunition is offloaded from the U.S. Naval Ship Lance Cpl. Roy M. Wheat Oct. 29 at Nordenham, Germany.

Lift Command vessel that is crewed and manned by Military Sea Lift personnel underneath the U.S. Navy. We are moving Air Force ammunition as well as Army ammunition, so it is truly a joint mission here that is being worked from all levels: from battalion and all the way through the (21st Theater Sustainment Command) and to higher headquarters back in the United States.” Hodges, who was present for the arrival of the first trainload to Miesau also commented on the joint nature of the endeavor, adding that German support was a key factor to getting the ammunition where it needed to go. “The fact that the ammunition came from Nordenham port by rail all the way to Miesau is only possible because our ally, Germany, allows it to happen,” Hodges said. “So it’s another way that Germany contributes to deterrence, by enabling the move-

ment of ammunition and equipment inside Germany for the United States Army.” He also complimented the Soldiers, civilians, contractors and German local national employees who made the mission a success. “I am so impressed with the quality of the work force out here,” Hodges said. “It’s a quality work force that made this possible.” Personnel at the depot started unloading and breaking down the shipment for storage or movement to other locations as it arrived. Ammunition will later be moved to various locations throughout Europe. “It’s the ultimate theater sustainment,” Culligan said. “We’re bringing ammunition into the theater to resupply and set the stage for the European theater for any type of exercises or potential future missions that may come about.”

New system will help beneficiaries manage specialty care referrals by Ashley Patoka Regional Health Command Europe Public Affairs Regional Health Command Europe will implement a new referral reminder system for patients who have a referral for specialty care beginning Nov. 30. The new process will apply to all patients who are being referred for specialty care. These patients will receive automated phone calls from their military treatment facility reminding them to make an appointment with an MTF specialist or host nation specialist. “This new system is beneficial to the patient because it will remind our beneficiaries to make their specialty care appointment at a time that may be more convenient for them,” said

Lt. Col. Michelle Gradnigo, Regional Health Command Europe chief of managed care. The implementation of this new process is an effort to prevent routine conditions from becoming chronic, enhance patient satisfaction and decrease the number of unused referrals. For patients with a referral, automated calls will be received at the phone number listed in the clinic’s medical record system. Patients can expect an automated call once their referral has aged to two days, 7 days, 14 days and then again at day 20. “The automated system will remind patients that might have forgotten about their referrals to make an appointment which fits into their busy schedule,” Gradnigo said. “Approximately 20 to 30 percent

of all referrals are not activated or used by patients. When a beneficiary misses a specialty care appointment, that appointment is an opportunity cost, which may negatively impact the health of the patient and subsequent treatment options.” The automated system also provides patients with an option to cancel their referral or be directly connected to the MTF during business hours to book their appointment. Additionally, the patients will be reminded to provide the details of their civilian specialty appointments to assist the MTF with obtaining their host nation medical reports. Currently, MTFs manually call patients to see if they used or will use their referral. In some cases, if the MTF cannot successfully reach patients who have civilian specialty

referrals, they call the civilian specialist to determine if the patient was seen, according to Gradnigo. All patients will receive a total of four automated reminders for each referral. Patients can interrupt the call schedule by responding to the automated call survey, contacting the MTF to report the appointment date and the name of the specialist the appointment is with, or by letting the MTF know that the referral will not be used. “We hope that this new system will make the referral process easier for our beneficiaries. Regional Health Command Europe is constantly striving to improve our practices and provide the best health care for our Soldiers and their families,” Gradnigo said. For more information, contact your clinic’s managed care office.

Children walk in lantern processions to honor St. Martin by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Nov. 11 not only marks the beginning of the German carnival season but also St. Martin’s Day. Today Germans honor the patron of the poor and friend of the children, St. Martin. Traditionally on the night of Nov. 11, Kindergarten children walk in processions through Kaiserslautern and villages in the KMC to honor Martin of Tours. They carry lanterns, which they crafted in kindergarten, and sing Martin songs. Usually the walk starts at a church and goes to a public square. A man on horseback dressed like a Roman soldier, Saint Martin, accompanies the children. When they reach the square, the Martin’s bonfire is lit and Martin’s pretzels are distributed. Martin was born in the year 316 or 317 as the son of a Roman civil servant. At age 15, he joined the emperor’s cavalry. One cold winter day, Martin was riding through country when a shivering beggar came his way asking for alms. Since Martin had neither food nor money, he cut his robe in half with his sword and gave a piece to the freezing man. Supposedly, the following night Jesus appeared in Martin’s dream and explained how he had been the freezing beggar Martin had given half his robe to. This event changed the soldier’s life. He left the army, got baptized and became a student of Hilarius, bishop of Poitiers, France. In 356, after Martin’s teacher was banned and after he failed to convert his father and others to the

teachings of Hilarius, Martin left for an island near Genua, where he lived as a hermit. In 360, Martin gave up his solitary life to join Hilarius again, who returned to Poitiers. In 361, he founded the first Gallic monastery in Liguge, France. In 371, the clergy and the people elected him bishop of Tours. In 375, he established Marmoutier, a monastery for ascetic life and school for bishops. Martin was still trying to evangelize pagans. On Nov. 8, 397, during a pastoral trip to Candes, he died. Thousands of monks, consecrated virgins and others went to his funeral Nov. 11. Years later, a basilica with the St. Martin Abbey was built on top of Martin’s gravesite. King Chlodwig elected Martin as patron of the Franconians. The tradition of the lanterns goes back to former times, when people lit candles to honor a saint and when lanterns were put up everywhere in town during a bishop’s visit. The custom of lighting a bonfire after the lantern procession represents the beginning of festivities. In former times, most of the work on the fields had been completed and now it was time to celebrate, drink and eat. Traditionally, a fat goose and sweet bread were served. One legend says that St. Martin died after eating a whole goose at a single meal. Another legend says that Martin was hiding to avoid his election as bishop of Tours, but chattering geese revealed his hiding place. The tradition of eating a “Martin’s goose” at this time of year has been kept. Many restaurants in the KMC add Martin’s

Each year after St. Martin’s parade through the town, a bonfire gets lit next to the church in Ramstein-Miesenbach.

goose with dumplings and red cabbage to their menus. Even on Christmas, Germans like to serve goose. In Kaiserslautern, the lantern procession of St. Martin’s Church starts at 6 p.m. Monday at St. Martinsplatz at the beginning of Steinstrasse and ends in front of the Rathaus, where St. Martin will divide his coat and the bonfire will be lit. In Ramstein village, festivities will start at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the

Catholic church. Then the lantern procession with St. Martin on a horse and musicians will go through town. The St. Martin’s play will be presented, the bonfire will be lit and pretzels and Gluehwein will be available. In Landstuhl city, St. Martin’s parade will start at 5:30 p.m. from St. Markus Church on Sonnenstrasse 45 and lead to Marienkapelle, Mary’s Chapel. Here the bonfire will be lit, and pretzels, bratwurst and Gluehwein will be offered.

Artists present creative works, show off skills by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 21st annual creative exhibition will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Ramstein-Miesenbach culture and convention center, Haus des Buergers. “Like in recent years, we again are able to present a wide range of creativity,” said organizer Marita Altherr. “A total of 76 hobby artists and crafters will show off their creative works.” Visitors will have the chance to admire and buy items made using different techniques. “Crafters work on their stands and show visitors how they create their products and what techniques they are using,” Altherr said. “For example, one artist from Brazil creates light objects made of vent pipes, and another one makes metal

objects with horseshoe nails.” Artists will show off a miniature fairy tale world and paint funny caricatures. Visitors will be able to admire jewelry, wooden items and ceramics. Also on display will be hats, scarfs, floristic items, nativity scenes and various soap creations. A local sewing machine store will show how to sew creative items in a short time, and a handicrafts shop will present ideas for fall and Christmas. “Hungry and thirsty visitors can take breaks in the cafeteria and taste fresh cinnamon waffles and a big variety of homemade cakes,” Altherr said. Like in previous years, there will be a raffle. All proceeds will go to the RamsteinMiesenbach Hospice Aid. Opening hours are 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

daughter. We just moved to the Kaiserslautern area - I am in the Air Force and my wife has been offered a job at Ramstein so we need someone who can start immediately. Child care would be either at our home or yours, Monday through Friday and roughly 6:30 am to 5:30 pm. We're on a waiting list for base childcare, so this job would be at least 3 to 6 months with the potential to become permanent. Pay is certainly negotiable, and we are willing to pay rates commensurate with education and certifications/experience if applicable.
