US, Israeli Airmen fortify airlift capabilities Story and photos by Tech. Sgt. Matthew Plew U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Public Affairs

NEVATIM AIR BASE, Israel — Two C-130J Super Hercules aircraft along with approximately 80 Total Force Airmen attached to the 37th Airlift Squadron, deployed to Israel in support of exercise Juniper Falcon from May 7 to 18. The 37 AS conducted airlift integration training with the Israeli Air Force designed to build interoperability and maintain the enduring partnership between the U.S. and Israel developed over decades of cooperation. “This is a great opportunity for us work with our Israeli partners to exchange ideas and concepts and the meaningful cultural aspect that comes with those discussions,” said Maj. Libby Music, 37 AS detachment commander. These training sorties, which See AIRLIFT, Page 2

tions. It is also important to travel at least in pairs, never alone. Another precaution is to avoid wearing clothes that identify someone as American or in the military. This includes garments with sports logos, American flags, or military symbols. As before, the off-base uniform policy still restricts members from wearing their uniform other than travelling between home and their duty location. Walking off base and riding a bike or motorcycle while in uniform is prohibited. Military members should not exit their vehicle while in uniform unless it is an emergency. In addition to concerns stemming from terrorism, travelers should be

alert to the possibility of political unrest, violence, demonstrations, and criminal activities. European Command directives require all Department of Defense travelers to register in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, or STEP, at https://step.state.gov/step/. This is a free service the U.S. Embassy uses to communicate important information about country-specific safety warnings and allows them to contact members in emergencies. For more information, call the 86 AW Antiterrorism office at 480-7029 or 06371-47-7029, or email them at 86AW.AFTP@us.af.mil.

LIFESTYLES

The attack in Manchester, England, this week is a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant in the face of terrorism, according to base officials. “An emergency situation can take place without any warning. Military members and our families are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness,” said Lt. Col. James Clark, 86th Security Forces Squadron commander. “Be aware of immediate surroundings and avoid crowded places. Exercise particular caution during

holidays, dates of religious or historical significance, and at large festivals or events.” Service members are strongly encouraged to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement by calling 480-2050 or 06371-47-2050. The U.S. State Department advises that extremists are increasingly aiming to attack targets such as highprofile public events, hotels, clubs, and restaurants, places of worship, schools, parks, shopping malls, markets, tourism infrastructure, public transportation systems, and airports. One step to reduce the risk of becoming a terrorist target is to avoid or minimize time spent in these loca-

focused on bilateral air interoperability and joint service integration through low-level flying, assault landing, and airdrop of cargo and personnel from the U.S. and host nation forces, gave the “Blue Tail Flies” pilots the chance to take part in flights unique to the region. The training also allowed them to become more familiar with the airspace and region that their Israeli partners are charged to defend. “The biggest takeaway for us is the unique exchange of air tactics, drop zone and landing zone operations and maintenance procedures between our two militaries,” said Capt. Wesley Dembek, 37 AS deputy of operations. “This is also a great opportunity for us to train in an austere environment that challenges us to adapt and become more familiar with the region.” Juniper Falcon represents the combination of several bilateral component exercises that have been executed annually since 2011. These exercises were combined to increase joint training opportunities and capitalize on transportation and cost efficiencies gained by aggregating forces. Airmen, Soldiers spring into action to support Special Olympics Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Timothy Moore 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen, Soldiers, and civilians alike came together on Ramstein to support and cheer on their Olympians during the 2017 Spring Kaiserslautern Military Community Special Olympics, May 19. More than 70 students from various schools throughout the KMC competed in several events including a relay race, volleyball, basketball skills, hula hoop, tug-of-war, and more. Though a steady rain prevented some events, it couldn’t stop the smiles from coming out to brighten up the day. “All of the smiles on every kid’s face (were my favorite part),” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jonathan Garrett, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron resource advisor. “Some were in wheel chairs and many had to have a lot more help than others with the events, but when the buddy cheered them or gets them excited about the next event their smile is what lights the world up!” At least two volunteers for each Olympian facilitated the day’s events. Some, like Garrett, got to be a “buddy” to the Olympians, who guided and offered encouragement during each event. “The committee does a good job of separating the schools so that they can meet other kids, but many of them are here on Ramstein for the first time,” Garrett said. “My (athlete) had never been at a Special Olympics, and his parents did not know what to expect either. I was their guide on where to go, how loud to cheer, and just an extra person for encouragement for their child. Sometimes someone yelling and cheering them on for something as simple as a hula hoop makes them the happiest person on the planet; this is where I think it makes the biggest difference.” Volunteers from organizations across the KMC made a difference this day as events like these happen largely because of their participation. “This is really a wonderful event, and it wouldn’t be possible without the volunteers who give so gener-

ously of their time each year to make it happen,” said Dr. Dell McMullen, Department of Defense Education Activity Europe director. “I see so many of our students here from the Kaiserslautern and Ramsteinarea schools. To see the smiles on their faces and the joy they take home at the end of the day is truly inspiring.” For many of the Olympians, having the chance to participate in the event meant the world to them. “This is not my first and definitely will not be my last time volunteering for such a great event,” Garrett said. “I love to help any way that I can with the Special Olympics every year and love being a buddy to these kids… I just encourage anyone looking to give back and make somebody’s day: volunteer.”

Jumping from the comfort zone Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Nesha Humes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs It’s hard to step outside of your comfort zone. Some people occasionally step outside of it, tentatively trying a new experience. Others, like Tech. Sgt. Cortney Velez, boldly jumps out of it from 1,250 feet above. Velez, a 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron independent duty medical technician, became U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s first female airborne IDMT after completing her first jump with the 435 CRG, May 12 in Alzey, Germany. Prior to graduating the U.S. Army’s Airborne School, she had never jumped from an aircraft. Wanting to try something different, Velez signed up to simply try something different. “I knew accepting this job position would be stepping out of my comfort zone and pushing myself to my limits,” Velez said. “If you stay in that comfort zone, you start to get complacent, get stagnant. You’re not going to push yourself to that next level. Even though nobody wants to be uncomfortable, every time I’ve taken that leap, it’s always paid off.” Velez is in one of only two airborne IDMT positions in the U.S. Air Force. Maj. Erin Archer, 435 CRSS assistant director of operations, wasn’t surprised upon finding out about Velez’s completion of airborne school. “Tech. Sgt Velez is not someone who is intimidated by challenges or the hard work required to overcome them,” Archer said. “The amount of time and effort she dedicated to prepare for the three-week Army training and her final success with this endeavor is truly inspiring. She is a competent and skilled IDMT, an exemplary Airman, and brings a positive attitude wherever she goes. She has a reputation in the CRG for setting an exceptionally high standard in all she achieves, and does so in a humble manner.” An IDMT is best described as having a small medical group capability encompassed in one individual. They can assess, evaluate, diagnose and treat any active-duty member in the absence of a provider within their established protocols. Some core functions IDMTs perform are emergency medicine, immunizations, bioenvironmental engineering, public health, and aerospace medicine in addition to laboratory, pharmaceutical and dental services. Not only are IDMTs a jack of all trades, but Velez’s mission requires further specializations.

Tech. Sgt. Cortney Velez, 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron independent duty medical technician, and Master Sgt. David Galindo, 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron operations superintendent, prepare gear prior to a personnel drop May 12 over Alzey. Velez completed her first jump with the 435 CRG and is U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s first female airborne IDMT.

“When we go out on a mission, we’re not sitting on the sidelines waiting for our tent to get put up,” said Velez. “We’re setting up tents with the team. We are in there getting our hands dirty; we’re part of a team. We know them and their families, and they know us and our families. The IDMTs know almost every in and out of their job.” Velez said because she’s embedded with the team and knows what they’re going through, if they become injured or sick, it gives her the ability to better administer treatment. Amid encompassing a mobile diagnosis and treatment facility, a few of Velez’s duties within the 435 CRG also include entomology disease management and prevention, food sanitation inspections, hospital site surveys, instructing multiple combat medical care courses, operating heavy equipment, and providing sick-call capabilities to more than 1,200 personnel. Velez has marked a first for USAFE’s history books, and though she thinks gender definitely played a part in some other people’s minds while she was running alongside her airborne-school teammates, it wasn’t a factor for her. “I don’t feel like I ever gave anyone a chance to doubt me,” Velez said. Velez continues to jump outside her comfort zone, descending into partner nations and persists to balance the tasks of multiple medics, maintaining healthy Airmen inside the CRG, one mission at a time.

ACS offers ways to ‘get a move on’ during PCS season Story and photos by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Installation Management Command Directorate Editor’s note: Airmen assigned to Ramstein can contact Military Personnel Flight’s outbound assignments at 4802777 for PCS season questions. Permanent Change of Station season is right around the corner, and several thousands of military families all over the world are on the move from May to August. To help families with their upcoming travels, the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Army Community Service’s Relocation Readiness Program provides classes and resources to get people to their new destination with minimal worries. One helpful course Relocation Readiness offers is a “Smooth Move Workshop,” providing outbound families with organization tips and tools, said Diane Dixon, Relocation Readiness Program manager. “One of the most important tools I teach during the workshop is how to use the online program, ‘Plan My Move.’ This is one of the military’s best kept secrets. It’s a Military OneSource program (www.militaryonesource.mil) allowing people to input what base they are at, what base they’re moving to and their date of departure. The program analyzes the data and lets them know all the things they need to accomplish and when,” said Dixon, who calls Baltimore, Md., home. “It also provides travel and arrival checklists, packing lists and important phone numbers for their current installations and their next assignment. So they can just print it out instead of looking up numbers in the phone book or searching online.” The workshop also informs servicemembers, Department of Defense

Popsy Lazo, Relocation Readiness Support and Smooth Move instructor, provides a desk-side briefing for a spouse who is relocating. The U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Army Community Service Relocation Readiness Support Program provides Smooth Move Workshops to all servicemembers, DOD civilian employees and their families monthly at 10 a.m., the fourth Thursday of the month, in Room 220, Bldg. 3210 on Kleber Kaserne; and at Baumholder at 9 a.m., the third Thursday of the month, in Room 112, Bldg. 8746.

civilian employees and family members how to request sponsors, close out German service accounts, tips on packing household goods, figuring weight allowances, estimate costs for moving, find online relocation resources and provides them with overseas briefings for special assignments to other overseas locations to include Japan and the Republic of Korea, said Popsy Lazo, Relocation

Relocation Readiness Assistant Amber Ybanez-Perez gathers household items from the Lending Closet for a family relocating back to the United States. The U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Army Community Service Relocation Readiness Program’s Lending Closet provides plates, utensils, cookware, cups, baby seats, high chairs, coffee makers, toasters and more. People must bring a copy of their PCS orders and sign a contract to borrow items for up to 60 days.

Readiness Support and Smooth Move instructor. “ACS helps people organize their move to make it as stress free as possible, while still maintaining the military mission, work, school and other responsibilities,” Lazo said. “The most important advice that we provide is to be proactive with planning a move and to have open communication with family members to validate their feelings associated with PCSing.” Workshops are open to all servicemembers, DOD civilian employees and their families and take place monthly at 10 a.m., the fourth Thursday of the month, in Room 220, Bldg. 3210 on Kleber Kaserne; and at Baumholder at 9 a.m., the third Thursday of the month, in Room 112, Bldg. 8746. Sometimes PCSing can be difficult for children who may be leaving friends and familiar places behind, said Dixon, who grew up as a military child. “I know what it feels like being the new kid at school all the time,” she said. “In the first grade, I attended three different schools in one year in The Netherlands, South America and Maryland. So I went to first grade in three different countries speaking three different languages!”

Dixon said to ease children’s transition to a new community, parents can request youth sponsors for school-age children between the sixth and 12th grade through their local school liaison officer. ACS Relocation Readiness also offers Relocation Reassignment Briefings for military personnel (these are mandatory briefings for Soldiers assigned to units in Baumholder), Hello America classes for local national spouses who have never lived in the United States as well as Pre-Move Workshops and Liaison to Citizenship Immigration Services. The classes are offered, but aren’t always on the monthly ACS calendar so people can request desk-side training for convenience, Lazo said. People should send their household goods to their next duty station as quickly as possible after they receive their orders and call the Furnishings Management Office to borrow furniture such as beds, dressers, dining room and living room furniture until they move into a hotel or a military Temporary Living Facility, Lazo advised. Another helpful perk Relocation Readiness offers is the Lending Closet, which is a smart way to borrow items to sustain people after their household goods have been picked up, she said. “The Lending Closet program has ‘survival kits’ that come in two-person, four-person or six-person bins that include plates, utensils, cookware, cups and so forth,” Lazo said. “If there are other needs, the Lending Closet has a list of goods that can be borrowed in addition to the kits. Some popular items include booster seats, high chairs, coffee makers, toasters, microwaves, rice cookers and even waffle makers. People must bring a copy of their PCS orders and sign a contract to borrow items for up to 60 days.” For spouses who want to get a jump on the job market at their next installation, Dixon has help for them as well. “If spouses are looking for employment at their next duty station, I refer them to our Employment Readiness Program at Kleber Kaserne and Baumholder,” Dixon said. “They can get their resumes ready and help spouses start looking for jobs back in the States. They are there all year long and help people PCSing in or out.” Contact the Employment Readiness Program at Kleber Kaserne at 5419001 or at Baumholder at 531-2862. “Moving doesn’t have to be difficult if you start planning early,” Dixon said. “The Relocation Readiness Program is here for anyone moving in or out of Rheinland-Pfalz.” For more information about these ACS programs, call 541-9000.

The run honors Airmen in the aerial port career field who lost their lives within the past year in incidents across the Air Force. “We’re showing them that we are a family,” said Tech. Sgt. This is what we do day in and day out but we’re people and we put family first,” Alessandrini continued. The memorial run began with a ceremony honoring Master Sgts. William Russ and Kelly Bartholomew, Staff Sgt. Jonathan Turner, and Airman 1st Class Russell De Leon. While the runners were met with inclement weather, Alessandrini said it only added to the emotions of the event. “It doesn’t matter if it’s raining or shining, we’re going to do this to respect our port dawgs,” Alessandrini said, using a popular nickname for aerial port Airmen. “It’s a somber event because we’re remembering our fallen friends. It just adds that effect to it when it rains.” Alessandrini said these traditions illustrate the camaraderie between aerial port Airmen, even if they are from different bases. The small size of their career field helps magnify the sense of community aerial port Airmen have, he said. “There’s not that many of us,” said Alessandrini. “Odds are that somebody at your base knows one of the people that passed away because we’re such a small career field. We’ve always been a close-knit bunch.”

Encourage visitors to pack medical travel insurance by Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs

Sturdy walking shoes? Check. Camera? Check. Travel Insurance? When friends and family come to visit, no one envisions a medical emergency during their European vacation, but in the military community, we try to plan for everything. You never know when a visitor might need medical services on the local economy. From replacing lost medication or treating the flu to something life threatening, like a car accident or heart attack, visitors need to arrange healthcare insur-

ance before their trip. One of the worst-case scenarios is someone not being able to return home on a commercial aircraft and requiring a medical flight back to the United States. A medical flight alone can cost approximately $13,000 or more, depending on the need for medical equipment and accompanying medical personnel. Some people are surprised to learn that Medicare and some health insurance companies do not pay for health care outside the United States. Some have special rules for health care outside the U.S., such as requiring patients to pay their bills out of pocket and fil-

ing a claim with the health insurance company for reimbursement. All of these examples have the potential to create extreme financial hardship for those involved if medical insurance is not available or doesn’t extend outside the United States. Visitors who do not have a military/retiree/DOD civilian Identification Card are not eligible for care at a Military Treatment Facility except for emergencies to save sight, life or limb. At times, even those who are eligible may need to receive care in the local community if an appointment isn’t available or if a military treatment

facility is not nearby. Those interested in obtaining travel insurance should carefully research covered services and limits. Does the travel insurance include a medical flight back home? Will the travel insurance pay hospitals directly or will the patient need to pay out of pocket for an expensive surgery and file for reimbursement later? These are all important questions your visitors should ask before their trip so they can enjoy their European vacation, knowing they are covered if a medical need arises and ensuring a worry-free visit for hosts and guests.

Don’t suffer alone – mental health disorders have effective treatments by Peter Holstein Surgeon General Public Affairs FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Mental health disorders are relatively common within civilian and military communities, but with early treatment, most mental health disorders can be effectively treated, and patients can return to mental wellness. While invisible wounds like posttraumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury are often associated with military service, they are not the most common mental health problems Airmen face. Far more common are depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders and other issues that, despite getting less attention, have a serious effect on the health of Airmen. “Mental health problems left unaddressed can be very disruptive to our lives,” said Col. Steven Pflanz, the Director of Psychological Health at the Air Force Medical Support Agency. “They affect our quality of life day-to-day, and as they get worse, can impact our relationships with significant others, children, friends and work. That’s a significant cost.” There is good news about treating these conditions, according to Pflanz. “The evidence is that we’re actually very effective at treating mental health problems, across the gamut of conditions. If you come into the clinic, you can expect that your problem will get identified, diagnosed and treated, and there’s a very good chance that you will be healed.” Many Airmen cite concerns about their career as reasons why they avoid seeking mental health care. But Pflanz challenged the logic behind this way of thinking. “Airmen notice the small number of people who are separated from the military through a medical evaluation board,” said Pflanz. “People don’t see the many people who get treated at our mental health clinics successfully

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and mental health disorders are common in both military and civilian communities. Fortunately, effective treatments exist for most mental health disorders. Often, the biggest impediment to getting better is an unwillingness to seek care.

returned to duty. Patients who go to our clinics and get better don’t often go back to their unit, raise their hand and talk about it.” Airmen who avoid seeking treatment may actually be jeopardizing their health and their career by staying silent. “Untreated mental health problems are a far bigger risk to most careers than seeking treatment,” said Pflanz. “If you have depression and don’t get treated, it may get so severe that you can’t function. Like with any medical problem, the longer you wait to deal

with it, the harder it is to fix.” Taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Like your physical health, mental well-being can wear down over time if you don’t attend to emotional needs. “To do well on your PT test, you have to work out regularly,” said Pflanz. “To do well emotionally, you have to take care of yourself regularly. Find time for the things that are important, that bring meaning to your life, like time with family, leisure activities, hobbies, volunteering

and rewarding work activities.” Air Force mental health providers are trained in the latest clinical practice guidelines developed by the Department of Defense and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. These methods incorporate the latest science into evidence based treatments. Airmen who go to Air Force mental health clinics can be confident that the treatment is the best medical science has to offer. “One alternative is suffering, the other is the chance of getting better,” said Pflanz. “I encourage Airmen to come in.”
