21st OWS: Writers of the storm by Senior Airman Devin M. Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Planning for operations in the military takes information from multiple sources including weather. When 4,000 troops were at risk due to a record-breaking storm, Airmen from the 21st Operational Weather Squadron sprang into action. They began tracking winter storm Friederike from infancy to a record storm persisting three days in northern Europe Jan. 17 to 19. The 21st OWS observes and reports weather patterns for all of U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command. At any given time approximately 20 weather technicians are on watch. “We started looking at this storm around 13 of January,” said 2nd Lt. Scott LaVoise, 21st OWS weather operations officer. “As it materialized, we issued the special weather statement giving all areas forecasted to be involved a heads up.” See WRITERS, Page 2

New Parent Support Program offers support for families by Airman 1st Class Alexis C. Schultz 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For parents who are expecting and those who already have children, the 86th Medical Group’s New Parent Support Program can offer information, support, and guidance. With a team of registered nurses, the NPSP provides assistance in the areas of pregnancy, labor and delivery, child care and safety, and more. The program gives parents the opportunity to express concerns and ask ques-

tions about their infants and young children. Families learn new skills while improving old ones with resources the program teaches them. The NPSP provides information and referrals, a support group for parents, as well as a library with books and DVDs. Tara Coenen, New Parent Support Program family advocacy nurse, says parents can attend classes such as prenatal and post-partum care, breast feeding, infant massage, and infant and toddler parenting.

“It really is a wonderful program,” said Coenen. “I feel very honored to help even one family.” NPSP registered nurses work with parents to arrange home and office visits at times that work for families. Home visits give parents a chance to talk with a professional about their pregnancy and parenting issues in the comfort of their own homes. Coenen explained that even if parents have already raised a child, they are still eligible to be a part of the NPSP.

The program helps families adjust to new challenges often experienced as their family grows. “You have to have compassion,” said Coenen. “I have been able to connect to these families more than I ever have before. It’s an honor to be let into someone’s space. It’s their home.” Department of Defense ID card holders are eligible to be a part of the program. WRITERS, from Page 1 Winter storm Friederike started leaving a path of destruction Jan. 17. Maj. James Caldwell, 21st OWS operations officer, said the squadron makes sure the forecast is accurate and that it gets to the right people at the right time. “We’re telling a story,” said Caldwell. “We try to paint the best picture in the commander’s mind and planner’s mind about what to anticipate two or three days out. That way they take environmental conditions in mind when they plan a mission.” The 21st OWS identifies the importance of a storm based on how widespread the event is, how many installations will be affected, what kind of missions it can potentially impact, and the duration and intensity. Once the Airmen gather weather information and build the forecasts, they notify predetermined planners within each combatant command that could be potentially impacted. “We can’t know every operation that goes on at each and every location, but we want to alert as many people as possible that hazardous weather is going to happen at a specific place and time,” said Caldwell. Caldwell said the 21st OWS operates in a role similar to the national weather service and storm prediction center for the forces in Europe. LaVoise said that during winter storm Friederike, Airmen were also keeping track of several lightning storms in the area.

“It was pretty hectic,” said LaVoise. “There were a lot of weather alerts we issued, a total of 38 wind watches and 58 warnings over the course of three days, which is a significant amount.” Caldwell said that being able to issue a special weather statement between 48 and 72 hours before the event, is a good hit. The statement for storm Friederike was put out 60 hours before the first impacts were felt in Europe and actual weather events played out as initially forecasted. As a result, Caldwell said, approximately 4,000 troops involved in a multi-national exercise who were in the path of the storm were moved to safety.

“We like to harmonize everyone’s talent in this unit, whether it’s our training team or the systems folks who provide our connectivity to the outside world,” said Caldwell. “Everyone teamed up on this one. It was up to the operational flights to keep the narrative going. Typically, when our ‘weather story’ needs to change, then it is up to that flight to give us a detailed update. That didn’t have to happen because everyone was in sync. It was a team effort from the entire squadron once we knew the forecast was accurate.” Storm Friederike was labeled the worst storm in the last 11 years in Germany, and Caldwell said it was the

kind of storm that comes around once in an Airman’s career. “This event didn’t take much coaching or quarterbacking. Already seeing such a harsh winter, our Airmen were poised and ready. Watching our people instinctively over communicate and squeeze all the accuracy out of this building that we could, it was remarkable and a highlight of my time here at the unit,” said Caldwell. “This whole winter season has been intense. Our reaction to these hazards is a testament to the noncommissioned officers training our new Airmen on the ops floor, our training team and our leadership on the ops floor.”

Grow speech skills with Toastmasters Story and photos by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The fear of standing in front of a crowd and addressing any topic can be daunting, especially for those with little experience in public speaking. Toastmasters’ Ramstein Speakers Association remedies that by preparing individuals for these situations. Whether it’s for an upcoming brief or getting ready for speech-heavy professional military education, RSA is designed to shape members into communicators. “Our goal is to mold and build strong communicators yet continuously provide feedback and opportunities for growth through a support system of experienced Toastmaster personnel,” said Senior Master Sgt. Hugo Caballero, RSA senior mentor. Toastmasters focuses on highlighting individuals’ strengths while pointing out their weaknesses so they can grow as speakers. “We ask them to work their way through a set of handbooks that has 10 different agendas inside of it, and we give them evaluations and critiques on how they can improve their speaking,” said David Sears, RSA mentor. “We try to allow this area to be a place where they can practice what they are going to do in public, what they are going to state in front of a large squadron, and what they’re going

to tell their commander. Whatever it may be, this is the place they come practice their sales techniques, their

pitch, their story, and have people listen to them.” One of the training methods they use in Toastmasters

is table topics. “Ideally, we give them a short topic that they know a little bit about and they

come up and tell us what they’re thinking,” said Sears. After receiving the random topic, the students have one to two minutes to present an on-the-spot speech. “Once you become accustomed to that, you are essentially able to adapt to virtually any atmosphere regardless of the situation,” said Caballero. “Here within Toastmasters you’ll be set for outside experiences away from the speaking association.” In the RSA, members have the ability to advance through tiers of competence. “After you accomplish the very first 10 speeches out of the initial handbook you become titled as a competent communicator,” said Sears. “After that, we have accomplished communicator bronze, accomplished communicator silver, and accomplished communicator gold. Each one of those are 10 speeches out of more advanced books.” Members can also move forward in leadership paths and potentially become sergeant of arms, vice president of education, and president of toastmasters. “We need those leadership positions filled in order for us to continue to grow and operate effectively,” added Caballero. Toastmasters’ RSA meets at noon on the first, second and third Tuesday of every month at the Ramstein Southside Chapel. Baumholder, Landstuhl teens tackle AFAP issues by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Installation Management Command Directorate Teens voiced their concerns at an Army Family Action Plan meeting last fall, and now their voices were heard by garrison leadership, Feb. 23. AFAP provides active-duty and reserve Soldiers, Army civilian employees, spouses, youth, survivors and retirees a role in improving their quality of life by identifying issues for resolution by Army leadership. “AFAP is important to the community because it allows real change in a grassroots form,” said Heather Miles, Army Volunteer Corps coordinator. “Each member has an opportunity to voice their ideas so leadership can hear what the community needs to thrive.” Young adults from Baumholder met with participants from the Landstuhl Teen Center to discuss issues and propose solutions during an AFAP Teen session Nov. 3 to improve both communities for garrison youth. This was the second time 16-year-old Timur K. was involved in an AFAP teen session, and said he enjoyed taking part in the annual event. “I’m used to participating in these type of meetings not only for AFAP, but in the Keystone Club as well. We don’t just throw issues out there — we address them and have an active role in finding solutions for the changes we would like to see,” said the Wetzel Keystone Club president. “On a small scale, it’s good for teens to discuss our issues, but on a larger scale, it would be great if our meetings actually made things better for everyone in our community.” Participating in AFAP for the first time, 15-year-old Mia D., said she liked how teen matters are addressed with leadership to affect change. “I think that it’s amazing that our ideas were heard by someone of impor-

tance that could make these things happen,” she said. “I’ve never had the opportunity to help make a difference in our community, so it makes me feel good knowing that we were taken seriously, and I look forward to being involved again.” Some teen initiatives were already put into place on a trial basis in Baumholder. The lack of weekend activities was an issue impacting teen morale in the area, and the proposed fix was to open the post exchange and eateries on the weekends. Two months later, their suggestions were put into place on a 90-day trial basis, and it was all due to the handful of teens who wanted to see positive changes take place. Additionally, the Wetzel Teen Center was also opened one Saturday per month. This change is contingent upon a 15-person minimum attendance to remain open. “Youth well-being is important for Soldier and family well-being. They have the great experience of moving to new communities and countries, but those moves can be stressful,” Miles said. “By meeting the needs of teens, we keep the whole family more engaged and with a higher quality of life.” 16-year-old Tyler P. participated in

Wetzel Teen Center participants brought their ideas to the table at an Army Family Action Plan teen meeting, Nov. 3, to discuss how to make life better for teens living in the Baumholder Military Community. Their suggestions were brought to U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz leadership for discussion, Feb. 23.

the AFAP meeting with several friends from Landstuhl Teen Center as well. “This was a good opportunity to be involved in our community,” said the senior from Kaiserslautern High School. “I’m glad we were able to get together as a group, think critically and propose solutions.” The Landstuhl teens brought up the issue of limited transportation — especially the concern that only one shuttle bus picks up youths from Ramstein and Kaiserslautern high schools. This takes a

great deal of time and limits their ability to reach the teen center for homework assistance and social interaction. “It takes a long time to take the shuttle to the teen center every day,” said Xxayvion T., a 14-year-old KHS freshman, “We also have a lot of teens looking for rides to work too — so having shuttles picking students from each school would be better for us.” Five issues and proposed resolutions were brought up to the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Commander Col. Keith E. Igyarto, Feb. 23. Their concerns were discussed and potential fixes are being worked. Although the issues came from junior members of the community, the commander was impressed with their collaborative spirit and commitment to help the garrison. “I’m proud of these young adults for volunteering to be a part of the AFAP process,” the commander said. “I also appreciate the active role they are taking to improve their lives, as well as the teens that move here in the future. Supporting our garrison through continued AFAP involvement makes our community a better place to live and work.”

Young adults from the Landstuhl Teen Center participated in an Army Family Action Plan meeting, Nov. 3, to discuss issues affecting teens and suggest solutions. Practicing safe supplement use by Senior Airman Timmethy D. James and Senior Airman Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs When people hear the word “supplement,” some tend to think about gym weights clashing and sweat, but supplements are used for far more than just getting “swole” or losing weight. There are a myriad of reasons people choose to take a supplement, but service members should be cognizant of what is in a supplement and the potential risks involved before making that choice. Operation Supplement Safety is a Department of Defense dietary supplement resource for the military community, leaders, healthcare providers, and Department of Defense civilians. Operation Supplement Safety has an official published list of dietary supplement “ingredients” cur-

rently prohibited by the DOD, which service members can find on the OPSS website. “Supplement manufacturers are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration or any other governmental entity, and can choose to not screen their products,” said Brian Kirby, 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron Kaiserslautern Military Community health promotion coordinator. “As a result, there are some supplements that are deemed banned or illegal to Olympic and professional athletes, military members, and other select groups of society.” There are supplements for weight loss, weight gain, boosting sexual performance, and sustaining energy, Kirby said. The OPSS website provides tips for fitness and performance, dietary supplement ingredients, weight loss, gen-

eral health, and a dietary supplement system to help supplement users make informed decisions. Operation Supplement Safety also maintains a list of tainted products marketed as dietary supplements, and other announcements for the supplement user community. “The outcome of a urinalysis test may show positive for an illegal drug that was sold under the auspices of being a supplement,” said Joseph Foster, Ramstein’s base exchange health store supervisor. Though they may not be illegal supplements, there are some that may produce effects that are illegal by ingesting them. However, customers can feel comfortable purchasing from on base, Foster said. Ramstein’s health store is the only health store at any DOD installation owned by the Army and Air Force

Exchange Service, and therefore is government regulated, so there are no DOD-banned products sold in the store or the main BX. “The Army and Air Force Exchange Service and GNC are not responsible for the misuse of any supplement, so people are encouraged to read labels and follow directions accordingly,” Foster said. Every year there are stories of injury, illness, and disease

as a result of supplement misuse. Just like food and drugs, service members should be careful about what they put in their bodies. It’s also very important for service members to know what can be ingested along with prescribed medications or any other over-the-counter medicine. Always consult with a medical professional, and monitor your supplement use.

Air Force expands virtual appointments FALLS CHURCH, VA.  The Air Force Medical Service is eliminating some of the hassle of medical appointments by expanding use of virtual, overthe-phone appointments for patients who do not need to see their provider in person. “When you are really sick, need a shot or an examination, then sure, you need to go in and see your doctor face-toface” said Maj. David Abbott, director of the Access to Care Program at the Air Force Medical Support Agency. “We find that many appointments that eat up space in our providers’ calendars don’t require a face-to-face visit, and can be accomplished quicker and just as effectively over the phone.” Virtual appointments are quicker and easier than coming into the office. What could take hours out of your schedule in person can be resolved in minutes over the phone. Avoiding the waiting room also reduces your risk of exposure to illness.

Patients at Air Force military treatment facilities can make a virtual appointment the same way they would a regular appointment. Patients call the MTF appointment line, or use secure messaging to request an appointment. The MTF staff will recommend a virtual appointment if it is appropriate and available. Air Force patients may still choose a face-to-face appointment, but many prefer the convenience of virtual appointments. “Adoption of virtual appointments has gone very well,” said Abbott. “So far, 88 percent of Air Force MTFs are using virtual appointments, for things like prescription refills, referrals and simple consultations. On average, the AFMS conducts 15,000 virtual appointments a month.” Virtual appointments are also perfect for active duty service members who need to complete one of their required health assessments.

Over-the-phone virtual appointments save time and keep you healthier. The Air Force Medical Service expanded access to virtual appointments last year, and others in the Military Health System are using the Air Force model. U.S. Air Force graphic

“I recently did one of my post-deployment assessments virtually,” said Abbott. “My primary care provider at Andrews Air Force Base called me and we ran through the checklist. He asked if there were any physical conditions I wanted to see him for in-person, I said no and

we moved on. That saved me from having to drive across town and back, and kept me out of a waiting room.” The Air Force virtual appointment program began in June 2017, and has been so effective that it is now a model for others in the Military Health System.

“The Defense Health Agency, the Army and the Navy are all working to adopt our model for virtual appointing,” said Abbott. “We think it’s just a great way to improve access, build the relationship between doctor and patient, and keep our patients healthier.”

‘I wanted my life back’ — An Airman’s recovery after a mysterious diagnosis by Shireen Bedi Air Force Surgeon General Public Affairs

disease. For Caden, his diagnosis is one of the 10 percent of cases with an unknown cause. While Caden was concerned about his diagnosis and the possibility of it spreading to other bones, he knew he had to focus on finding a solution. Caden met with both military and civilian physicians to find the treatment option to help him return to his active lifestyle and remain in the Air Force. “By this point my quality of life was drastically reduced from dealing with the chronic pain,” said Caden. “I received a procedure that aimed to restore blood flow to the bone, and a special brace that would take load off my feet. In the end, it made things worse. I felt more discomfort and the bone was only becoming deader.” Caden soon realized the most effective solution to finally rid himself of this pain would be amputation. On Dec. 27, 2016, Caden received an amputation on his right leg, 6 inches below his knee. “I was confident that my quality of life would be better if I got the amputation,” said Caden. “Aesthetics were not important to me, it was all about being active again.” Equipped with a new prosthesis, Caden wanted to have the best chance of recovering and quickly returning to duty. He and his physicians agreed that a 90-day recovery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center was the best option. It was there he learned how to walk on his prosthesis, and how to ride a bike again. The care and the support he received played a significant role on both his recovery

and outlook on his amputation and prosthesis. “I could not have had a better recovery,” explained Caden. “Three months there put me a year ahead of schedule. Just being there with so many other people going through the same thing as you makes it a lot easier. The physical therapists were also key in ensuring I could return to my active lifestyle and was safely progressing towards that goal.” Caden’s primary care physician at JBLE also provided ongoing care and support vital to his recovery. “She has been a huge advocate for me,” said Caden. “She always listens to my concerns at every step of my recovery, and has directed my care where it needs to be and made sure that I would be able to remain in the Air Force.” From his diagnosis to his physical therapy with a prosthesis, Caden’s providers at Walter Reed and JBLE made him the central part of his care. Because of this, Caden continues to serve in the Air Force and returned to his active lifestyle. Almost a year after his amputation, Caden was not only able to pass his Air Force physical fitness test, he also successfully completed a 100-mile bike race. “Getting the amputation was the best decision I ever made,” said Caden. “The care I received at every step are hard to quantify and played a big role in my recovery. There was never a time where I wished for my leg back, I wanted my life back. With the pain gone and a new prosthesis, I am focused on looking forward and establishing a new normal.”

FALLS CHURCH, VA.  A mysterious pain in Chief Master Sgt. Chad Caden’s right foot led to years of pain, uncertainty, and a life-changing decision that proved to be the best one he ever made. Caden’s recovery and return to active duty reinforces the Air Force Medical Service’s commitment to its Airmen and patient-centered care. In 2011, Caden, the chief enlisted manager with the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, noticed pain in his right ankle and foot. With nothing showing up on any x-rays and finding the pain somewhat bearable, Caden chose to live with the discomfort for a couple of years. Over the years, Caden’s pain worsened and simple tasks became too much to handle. During his deployments between 2013 and 2015, it was determined he was dealing with a severe case of tendonitis. Motivated to continue his job, Caden diligently followed the physical therapist’s instructions. “I was doing everything they told me, from stretching and icing it, to rolling it out and wrapping it,” said Caden. “Despite that, it hurt to stand, I had little mobility in my ankle, and it felt as if the pain was only getting worse.” Back from deployment in 2015, Caden knew his pain was due to something other than tendonitis. Daily tasks were becoming increasingly difficult, and standing was becoming impossible. He decided to see an on-

base patient advocate to help direct him to the appropriate level of care and find the true source of his pain. “After an MRI, the primary care physician called me and said ‘I completely understand why you have been complaining,’” explained Caden. “The doctor said my ankle bone was completely dead and had not been receiving blood flow for some time.” Caden was diagnosed with Osteonecrosis, a bone disease due to a loss of blood supply to the bone. This causes the bone tissue to die and collapse. While most people diagnosed with the disease know the cause, such as traumatic injury or an autoimmune

AER takes care of Soldiers Story and photos by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Office

The annual Army Emergency Relief Campaign takes place March 1 through May 15, and U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz is committed to helping Soldiers in need. AER was established 76 years ago to assist Soldiers and their family members in emergency situations to avoid financial hardship. Monetary assistance is given in the form of interest-free loans, grants or a combination of the two. “Army Emergency Relief is the only organization that provides financial assistance to active-duty, retired, Army Reserve and National Guard Soldiers and their family members as well as survivors of Soldiers that died while on active duty,” said Carlos Alvarez, USAG RP AER representative. “Assistance is normally provided in the form of an interest free loan, a grant or a combination of both.” When a Soldier goes to Army Community Services seeking assistance for a financial emergency, an AER officer will review the application, which includes a budget form, a completed AER form and documents supporting the need. The AER officer will then interview the individual to determine the course of action most beneficial to the Soldier, Alvarez explained. The program also provides needbased undergraduate college scholarships for spouses and children of active-duty and retired Soldiers. The Spouse Education Assistance Program and the Maj. Gen. James Ursano Scholarship Program are need-based scholarship programs created to help Army spouses and children of Army Soldiers obtain their undergraduate degrees. Alvarez, a retired sergeant major with 28 years of active-duty service, said he first heard of AER when he was going through Army Basic Combat Training. “One of the Soldiers in my platoon had a death in his family. The soldier was allowed to go home for a week to attend his father’s funeral and AER assisted with his travel expenses,” he recalled. “Because of this, I learned about AER early in my Army career. Throughout my time in the service, I had several Soldiers under my supervision that received AER assistance for things such as rent, electric, gas,

“Army Emergency Relief is about taking care of our Soldiers past, present and future – it stands to reason each of us play a pivotal role in AER’s ability to provide this continued support,” said USAG RP Command Sgt. Maj. Brian N. Hauke. “Through our donations to this storied 76 year old organization, they are able to help relieve the distress of Soldiers and their families. The AER motto, ‘Soldiers helping Soldiers,’ never rings truer than during the AER campaign!” Alvarez said although the AER campaign runs for 60 days, the program accepts donations anytime throughout the year. “AER is a not for profit private organization and is the only entity providing direct financial assistance to Soldiers and their families. There is no other program that matches AER assistance,” he concluded. Donating to Army Emergency Relief couldn’t be easier. People have three ways to help Soldiers in need — by filling out the traditional paper donation forms, on the AER website at www.aerhq.org or by using the AER phone app.

» Inherit the Wind: Don’t miss KMC Onstage’s production of this timeless, science vs. religion story! The accused was a slight, frightened man who had deliberately broken the law. His trial was a Roman circus. The chief gladiators were two great legal giants of the century. Like two bull elephants locked in mortal combat, they bellowed and roared imprecations and abuse. The spectators sat uneasily in the sweltering heat with murder in their hearts, barely able to restrain themselves. At stake was the freedom of every American. This play is based on the evolution trials of the 1920s, but its central theme — the pursuit of intellectual freedom — is just as relevant today as it was 100 years ago. Kaiserslautern BOSS program enhances morale, welcomes new president by Azure Hall U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz

Being stationed overseas offers service members a lot of opportunities, such as travel, experiencing new cultures and stepping outside of your comfort zone. But it may also come with challenges, like distance from loved ones and loneliness. Many of these struggles are often experienced by single service members, and that’s where the Kaiserslautern Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s Better Opportunities for Single Service members program comes in. The BOSS program aims to enhance the morale and welfare of single military members, to include active duty, guard and reserve capacities, who are unmarried, single parents or geographic bachelors serving in any branch of service from any country. BOSS programs increase retention and sustain combat readiness through its three core components for maintaining a balanced life: leisure and recreation, community service and quality of life. Tucker Wakefield, Family and MWR BOSS adviser for Kaiserslautern, explained that many Family and MWR programs and services are geared more toward families. BOSS recognizes obstacles faced by single service members can be amplified when they move overseas. “Aside from just being at a new duty station, there’s the language and culture barrier, different customs and just overall adjustment to life in another country. BOSS is here to support its members in all of these areas,” he said. The Kaiserslautern Military Community has a thriving BOSS program and provides its members with a variety of opportunities to enhance their morale, living environment or personal growth and development. Members are invited to share their ideas with the group and bring programs to fruition. Recreation and leisure activities include life-

Tucker Wakefield, Kaiserslautern Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers adviser, and Spc. Brian Wolford, new BOSS president, encourage single service members living in the Kaiserslautern Military Community to join the program. BOSS provides leisure and recreation activities, community service and improves the quality of life for activeduty, guard and reserve service members.

style classes, free or low-cost excursions, social events and more. Perhaps one of the most important services offered by BOSS is the chance to give back and make a difference in the community. “Volunteers are absolutely essential to making the program a success. No one individual could run this program on their own,” Wakefield said. “We rely on everyone to pitch in, from single service members all the way up to senior leadership support.” There are numerous community service and volunteer opportunities, including American Legion gravestone beautification projects and special event support. For their time, BOSS members have the chance to receive the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. Membership also helps to advance service members’ promotion packets. Service member involvement is paramount to the success of the program. Along with membership, participants also have the opportunity to take on leadership roles. Garrison BOSS programs are led by a senior enlisted adviser, Family and MWR Adviser and BOSS president; each of whom plays an important role in the execution of BOSS missions. Kaiserslautern BOSS recently gained a new president — Spc. Brian A. Wolford.

As a satellite network controller with the 53rd Signal Battalion at Landstuhl, the BOSS program quickly became an important part of Wolford’s life there. “This is my first duty station, and it’s also my first time even being out of the United States,” said Wolford, who hails from North Potomac, Md. “When you’re living over here, you don’t have the direct support that you would stateside. The holiday seasons get rough in particular, so having a program like BOSS helps make those and other times less lonely.” After first becoming his company’s BOSS representative, he moved up in the program until recently taking on the role as president. BOSS affords service members like Wolford with the opportunity to assist in planning and execution of recreational activities for other single service members and provides direction for those interested in performing military and civilian community service-related projects. Serving with BOSS can provide members with valuable experience, skills and a sense of community pride and ownership. For more information about the program, call Kaiserslautern BOSS at 541-9060/9058 or 0611-143-541-9060/9058 or Baumholder BOSS at 531-2912 or 0611-143-531-2912.

Ramstein to hold tryouts for base softball teams by Staff Sgt. Tory Patterson 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The Ramstein Rams varsity men’s and women’s softball teams are scheduled to hold tryouts at the Southside Fitness Center softball fields on Ramstein Air Base March 19 to 29. The tryouts are open to active-duty military members, dependents, retirees, contractors, and “basically anyone who has access to the installation,” said Tech. Sgt. Emmanuel Santillan, men’s team assistant coach. Participants must be at least 18 years old. Santillan, a member of the team since 2014, said the Rams will compete against other U.S. Air Forces in Europe teams, as well as local teams and organizations at neighboring U.S. Army installations. For games that require travel, members may be granted permissive TDY under rules for Air Forcerelated sports at their commander’s discretion. While there are other softball organizations in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, the Ramstein Rams are the official varsity team of Ramstein AB, endorsed by the 786th Force Support Squadron. The amount of people who try out has decreased in the last five years according to the men’s team head coach, Master Sgt. Thomas Hoover. “Softball in Europe is starting to lose

The Ramstein Men’s and Women’s Varsity Softball Team tryouts will be held at the Southside Fitness Center softball field at Ramstein Air Base in March.

its luster,” he said. “However, we are trying to revive it and bring certain things back, like a European championship.” But that revival requires renewed interest, and the coaches hope anyone interested in softball will consider trying out. The Ramstein Fitness Program sports director and coaches determine the number of players allowed on the men’s and women’s teams, but rosters typically include 20 players. “That’s the baseline number we go with, but if we have 20 sharp players,

and we have that 21st player who is really sharp, we could make that call as coaches in conjunction with the sports director,” said Hoover. Potential players, even those who have been involved with the team in prior years, must earn their spots. “No one is officially on the team until after tryouts,” said Hoover. “Everyone competes for their spot every year – including us as the coaches.” The men’s and women’s softball season begins in April and ends in September. Hoover said tryouts are

designed to challenge participants. “Once the season starts, you’re playing softball from eight in the morning until eight at night sometimes, so tryouts are not a joke,” he said. Despite the demanding season, both Santillan and Hoover said their love of the game keeps them returning to the Rams. “I’ve been in the Air Force 13 years now, and what keeps me in is the camaraderie,” said Santillan. “This softball team takes it to another level. We’re a band of brothers and sisters.” Most tournaments take place on the weekend, which helps by minimally impacting the mission for players with a Monday through Friday work schedule. However, Hoover noted that while team involvement is “a lot of commitment, the military comes first.” Although team fundraisers sometimes ease the financial burden, travel costs are the responsibility of individual players. To try out, players must show up to any of the scheduled dates with a glove, protective equipment, and rubberized (not metal) cleats. Tryouts for the men’s team will be on March 20, 22, 27, and 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and March 24 from noon to 3 p.m. Tryouts for the women’s team will be on March 19, 21, 26, and 28 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and March 25 from noon to 3 p.m.

Baumholder Bucs DODEA Champions

Andrew Carter blocks a second-half shot attempt by Brussels center Callum Proulx as Daryon Jones (10) and others watch.

Story and photos by Thomas Warner contributing writer

WIESBADEN  After beating Brussels three times already in 2018, Baumholder had to work extra hard to do it again and win the Division III boys’ basketball crown at the Department of Defense Education Activity Europeans championships. The Buccaneers’ defense was steady early, when senior most valuable player Nate Horton rejected two Brussels shots and fired up an immense group of fans that traveled to support the team. Just hours after Baumholder’s cheerleaders finished second overall at Euros, the basketball team was stalling away the final minutes for a 35-28 overtime win against the Brigands.

Behind the play of Horton and his mates, Baumholder (19-1) made 13-of15 free throws in the first three quarters before eating up key late minutes. Daryon Jones, Kwameer Gindraw, Andrew Carter, Chandler Piggé, and Solo Turgeon were also part of an ironclad lineup as BHS secured the big prize. “This roster is better than any of the other lineups I’ve been with,” said Horton, who played four years and was as a freshman on a BHS team that lost in the 2015 Euro finals. “We are best friends off the court and that makes it all the better to win the title. We are a close group.” Carter and Turgeon did their best work on defense, diving for loose balls and securing rebounds en route to rewarding their coach with his long-

awaited championship. Both players are juniors and will be counted on next season to try and help Baumholder contend again. “To win it for Coach Piggé means so much,” Carter said. “He has put so much into the program and given so much energy for his players. It was a physical game but we knew there would be bumps and bruises afterwards. There always is when we play Brussels and they gave a ton of effort. I really congratulate them.” It was a huge reward for the Baumholder community, which packed their section of the Clay Kaserne Gymnasium and kept things loud the entire contest. Baumholder’s last title came in 2009 but that was before Piggé arrived. Raised in Texas, he coached in Japan at Kadena and at MC Perry High in Iwakuni for several seasons but never won a DODEA championship. “The determination and the defensive effort by these guys, carrying out our plan, makes for a great ending to the tournament,” Piggé said. “When you come in undefeated like we did, then lose one, I think it can make you realize that nothing is for sure until you actually do it.” Horton’s fancy dribbling was part of all-around ball control throughout the title contest and Baumholder showed no depression after seeing their undefeated season altered in a 31-30 loss to Ansbach two nights earlier. The Buccaneers swept Brussels in the regular season and had beaten them once more in the round-robin play during this tournament, so both teams knew what to expect. “It wasn’t much of a guessing game,” Brussels senior center Callum Proulx said afterward. “They had some really good guys that can play inside and it was physical. There were a couple of balls that just didn’t go our way.” Gindraw scored all nine of his points on free throws and the 6-foot-3 freshman Chandler Piggé scored a basket plus two free throws in the overtime, when BHS outscored Brussels 9-2. Horton had a steal and a score, plus two free throws to help establish a 13-4 lead after one period. Baumholder also got a pair of baskets from Carter and Gindraw while staying on top by 20-14 at halftime. Dominick DeFazio enabled Brussels to stick around with excellent decisionmaking and 11 points, but none in the fourth quarter or the OT session. Baumholder did not often stall the ball this season, but in a one-possession game it turned out to be the right move.

“We held our own pretty much during the tournament but when it got down to crunch time in this one, we had to focus on possession,” senior forward Daryon Jones said. “It was nervewracking at first but we got through it and we also played great defense and executed.” Baumholder led the entire game except for a few seconds after Brussels’ Shahzod Niyazov converted a run-out

basket off a steal. Moments later, BHS pulled back in front for good on a pair of free throws by Jones. Niyazov finished with 12 points and DeFazio had 11 in the title game loss. Baumholder led 20-14 at halftime but was in close quarters due to scoring just six total points in the third and fourth quarters against the veteranbased Brigands. Clinging to a slim lead, BHS chose to rotate the ball from player to player for most of the final three minutes instead of attacking offensively. The Bucs got an open look but missed a late shot, then a long heave by Brussels was off the mark to set up the four-minute overtime. After Horton scored underneath, he and Chandler Piggé combined to make a steal and earn free throws. When Brussels chose to foul late, BHS got four key free shots from Gindraw and Piggé. Coaches and his teammates said Gindraw stepped up his game late in the year and became a key player. Against Brussels, Gindraw defensed inbound plays and rebounded with regularity but the key intangible was the team’s ability to carry out the four corners stall and not give Brussels chances to score.

It had been nearly a decade since Baumholder won a basketball championship so the team had no qualms with slowing down the tempo and running off clock time in its Department of Defense Education Activity Division III championship game last weekend. The coaching staff instructed players to pull out to the far corners of the court and play a game of keep-away in the final minutes against Brussels. The strategy paid off when Baumholder made key free throws and converted on two shot opportunities. “We’ve done the four corners stall once or twice this season and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t,” Buccaneer guard Andrew Carter said. His defense was key when he joined fellow junior Solo Turgeon in putting bodies on Brussels players for all four quarters as well as an overtime stanza. “I was an eighth grader when the last Baumholder team played in the finals and that was exciting to see,” junior guard Turgeon said. “Ansbach and Brussels are both amazing teams this year. They have big men and they know how to post up. It wasn’t easy at all.” Baumholder missed four of five free throw attempts late but was able to hold on for the win thanks to the stall and two key misses underneath by the Brigands. The Brussels team only scored once in the OT and the Buccaneers stalled again when they got separation in the scoreboard. “With this group we’ve always practiced four corners and clock management, trying not to give the opponent the ball,” Piggé said. “The defensive intensity was there for us and it really picked up toward the end of the fourth quarter and going into overtime. Nate Horton came through big time for us and Chandler hit a big shot at the end. Andrew Carter, aw, he’s amazing … very fundamentally sound. He does everything you tell him to do, but better. And this is actually his first year to play organized basketball. I am proud of these guys. They are great to be around each day and there’s no question they are champions.”

Renting an apartment...with no kitchen! by Bret Helenius I remember looking for a place to live when I first arrived in Germany and coming across a bazaar occurance on more than one occasion. What was odd wasn’t that everything was in metric (it was!) and it wasn’t that all the rooms were separated off with closing doors (they were, including living rooms). It was that some of the places I saw had no kitchen!

If you have ever put in some serious time in the housing market in Germany, you possibly have come across places with the kitchen missing. If you haven’t come across this yet, consider yourself lucky. That means you probably

found a place to live rather quickly and were not subject to loving everything about the house/apartment...except for the fact it had no kitchen. As Americans, we would never run into this strange occurrence in the states, probably because the reason we rent a house is because we don’t own any part of an apartment. We need a place to live with all the amenities, including a sink! I have asked many of our German hosts why this is a thing. It seems many Deutschers actually like this! One friend brought up a good point when he explained it to me. “When I moved into a flat, it was the perfect location and the price was

right. Unfortunately, the landlord hadn’t updated it in about 30 years and the kitchen was the ugliest pea-green you have ever seen.” He went on to say “one of the best ways to have a nice modern place is to actually update it yourself!” I asked what you do with the kitchen when you move and the next place is a different size? “No problem. There is actually like a black market for kitchens where you can almost find every size of used kitchen you want to buy or sell.” So what else might “move with the owner” in Germany? It is often likely that the light fixtures move with an owner or renter, but Read more on last page of Property Section
