Ramstein welcomes NFL’s Panthers by Senior Airman Jonathan Bass 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

As part of a USO campaign to say thank you to service members and their families, players and cheerleaders from the Carolina Panthers flew to Germany and spent March 6 and 7 learning about Ramstein. “The Carolina Panthers organization has always been a great supporter of our service members and their families stationed in North Carolina,” said John Falkenbury, USO of North Carolina president and CEO. “I am honored to be traveling alongside them and helping the USO’s long-time partner, the NFL, deliver upon its mission of connecting troops to family, home, and country.” Five players and two cheerleaders made the journey from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Germany. The players met with fans in the 721st Aerial Port Squadron’s Passenger Terminal, the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal flight, the 86th CES fire and emergency services flight, and the 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron during their visit. is a critical part of our commitment.” The DTC offers its services to Airmen of every career field and combatant command. “We have to take care of people; they are the human capital that the Air Force banks on,” said Maj. Corey Carnes, program director. “Why do we think the DTC is important? Because we need our Airmen.” Airmen pass through the DTC at the discretion of their deployed commander. A deployment commander wishing to send people through the DTC only have to fill out a form called the

Another way for Airmen to pass through the facility on the way back is if their career field functional manager defines it as a requirement before they deploy. The Air Force Deployment Transition Center is continuing to push forth its mission to support the Air Force’s most valuable assets: Airmen. The deployment decompression facility, which recently marked the arrival of its 10,000th redeployer on Ramstein, aims to help Airmen coming home from deployment transition back into a nondeployed environment.

Gen. Tod Wolters, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander, praised the personnel at the DTC for taking care of Airmen and working to enable the Joint warfighter. “The DTC helps Airmen transition from deployment to back home. ... The center has been in place for nearly seven years,” Wolters said. “This vital program ensures our deployers get the time and the assistance they need to adjust from deployment life back to at-home life. Our Airmen are committed to supporting the joint fight, and the DTC

Celebrating 75 years of Airmen helping others with AFAS Story and photo by Senior Airman Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The Air Force Aid Society celebrated its 75th anniversary March 10 on Ramstein. The AFAS, the official charity of the U.S. Air Force, has been meeting the unique needs of Airmen and their families since 1942. AFAS works to support and enhance the USAF mission by providing emergency financial assistance, educational support, and community programs. Celebrations were held at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center for families to come together in a large forum, and the event reminded people of the many different ways the AFAS helps Airmen and their families, said Wesley Yancey, 86th Force Support Squadron exceptional family member program and family support specialist. “The celebration of 75 years of the AFAS is an opportunity for Airmen and their families to reflect on what it means to take care of one another,” Yancey said. “The mission of the AFAS reflects what is written in the Air Force creed, ‘I will never leave an Airman behind.’ Today, we honor the AFAS and its dedication to ensuring that Airmen who need help have

rates, life in an overseas community, and the high cost of flying back to the states in case of an emergency. AFAS can potentially provide an interestfree loan and community programs to help offset those unique challenges one faces when living overseas.” Helping Airmen is the singular philosophy driving everything at AFAS. According to their website, more than 50,000 assists and nearly $15 million in direct help through emergency financial assistance, education support, and community programs has helped Airmen across the world. Giving to others has served as the foundation for a culture that spans for 75 years, and to become a part of that, all one needs to do is educate oneself and take action. “There are several different ways people can donate to AFAS,” said Juli Robertson, 86 FSS community readiness specialist. “One-time donations can be made by phone or online, or a monthly recurring donation can be set up through either the Five Star Circle on the website or during the Combined Federal Campaign. Donating to AFAS is a great option because for every dollar donated, there are three dollars providing help to Airmen and their families. Our Air Force family has proven again and again how important helping each other continues to be.”

a place to turn to. There couldn’t be a better way to share this milestone of service than to give a little more back to the community.” Families were provided information not only on what the AFAS does, but its history and accomplishments for the past 75 years. Older than the Air Force itself, AFAS traces its roots back to 1942. General Henry H. Arnold had a vision of an organization that embodied the idea of Airmen helping Airmen, and it still drives the Air Force’s mission

“It feels great to be able to represent the Carolina Panthers organization,” said Andrew Norwell, Panthers left guard. “To come over here and thank the troops, it’s truly an honor to be here and supporting everyone.” The Cincinatti, Ohio, native, added that seeing the teamwork demonstrated by individuals working as a unit here was an inspiration to him as a football player. “Seeing what it takes to come together for a common goal, to protect us back home, is truly amazing,” Norwell said. The Carolina Panthers organization is an avid supporter of service mem-

bers, frequently including them in their game-day activities, and even reserving a row of honor for service members to sit in at every home game. Norwell explained that the respect and admiration for those who volunteered starts at the top. “It’s great,” he said. “It starts with the head coach (Ron Rivera). He has a deep military background. He loves the salute to service month. His father served in the military, and he loves to pay it forward.” After their visit to western Germany, the team loaded up and drove to U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr, to continue their trip in Europe. Senior master sergeant to new SNCOs: ‘Determine your own legacy’ Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein’s newest senior NCOs gathered March 7 at the 86th Force Support Squadron building on Ramstein in order to gain additional leadership skills and refresh themselves on what it means to be part of the Air Force’s highest enlisted tier. Senior Master Sgt. David Stollings Jr., 86 FSS career assistance advisor, explained that NCOs who are selected to promote to Master Sergeant will wait longer than one year before their next professional military education experience. The three-day professional enhancement seminar helps bridge the PME gap between Air Force NCO Academy and Senior NCO Academy, he said. “Not only do they have the opportunity to learn about what it means to be a senior NCO, but they also interact with their peers to discuss scenarios which pose challenges to Airmen and leaders,” Stollings said. Stollings added that the course is meant to be interactive, and that participants were encouraged to provide their inputs and theories during group discussions. “We want them to actually think thoroughly about every situation and redeployers, from page 1

Master Sergeants, particularly, are in a state of transition from being first-

sions about post-deployment life, and experiential outings in the local area. The program aims to give Airmen tools to immerse back into normal society. “We’re not teaching them rocket science or anything new,” Carnes said. “We are reminding them of the positive skill sets they probably already possess, things you learn in basic training or on wingman days. That means more than any stripe that I’ve ever put on.” Tate also cautioned senior NCOs against prioritizing their careers ahead of their families, saying a person’s career should not overshadow the importance of their loved ones. Their families will remain even after they retire from the Air Force, he said. “When you take off the uniform, who will be there for you,” Tate asked the audience. “Hopefully your family, if you did it right.” Other topics scheduled to be covered during the seminar include lessons on enhancing human capital, team building and motivation, aerospace physiology, standards and discipline, and a Chief Master Sergeants’ panel. While the variety of talking points discussed during the seminar went many different ways, they all point toward the same direction: To be a leader means to be a servant. Towards the end of his talk, Tate challenged those in attendance to chart their own course in their career. “What is your purpose,” Tate prodded them. “What is your legacy? Don’t let anyone else write it for you. Determine your own legacy.”

What SOFA status means Courtesy of Ramstein Passport Office

The Kaiserslautern Military Community is the largest American community outside the continental United States, which makes it easy for U.S. military members to forget they are actually a resident of a foreign country. Traveling within Germany and crossing international borders is as easy as crossing from one U.S. state to another. But, most military members have never been stopped by police for a routine check or while driving or boarding an airplane back from Iowa. The following are rules of the military’s Status of Forces Agreement status showing how service members can identify themselves as legal residents of Germany and not as visiting tourists. Active duty U.S. military members assigned to Germany should present their military ID cards and NATO or travel orders. U.S. government civilian employees, DOD-sponsored contractors and all eligible family members require a Status of Forces Agreement certificate in their passport to show they are a legal resident. What are the SOFA status benefits and responsibilities? SOFA is a treaty setting out terms under which members of the force and the civilian component of a foreign NATOmember state are allowed to operate in another NATO state. The SOFA certificate identifies the bearer as a person who is entitled to unrestricted entry and exit from Germany and to benefits, privileges and protection under the NATO SOFA and the German Supplementary Agreement. These benefits include the exemption from having to register a presence with the German authorities and from paying German income tax. Certain goods may also be purchased tax free, including vehicles. The SOFA treaty also requires service members to observe certain responsibilities. Individuals are responsible for learning and obeying German laws, carrying an official ID card issued by the sending state, registering vehicles with USAREUR and having a SOFA

certificate in their passport to prove their entitlement to live and travel within Germany. Who is entitled to a SOFA certificate? Eligible people must be U.S. DOD civilians, DOD-sponsored contractors and their family members, military dependents accompanying the force and certain foreign nationals from NATO-sending states employed by the armed forces. Local nationals or foreign employees from countries that are not members of NATO are not entitled to SOFA status. What documents do I need to receive a SOFA certificate? Command-sponsored family members and stateside-hire civilians should receive a SOFA stamp in their no-fee passport before arriving in Germany. Service members need PCS or TDY orders assigning them to Germany and their dependent’s passports and ID cards to apply for SOFA certificates for foreign national or non-commandsponsored dependents. Local hire civilians, contractors and their family members need an AE Form 600-77A from their servicing personnel office and their dependents’ passports and valid ID cards. All family members must be enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System. If dependents, such as those under the age of 10, do not have a valid ID card the sponsor will need to provide a DD Form 1172-2 as verification

that the dependents are enrolled in DEERS. Why do I need a SOFA certificate? If caught without a valid SOFA certificate, at a minimum, your continued travel to your destination in Germany will be delayed, however, violators could face fines or deportation. Not all customs officers check for a valid SOFA certificate but that should not be a risk you are willing to take. Officials have become less lenient after noticing a large influx of travelers without valid SOFA identification. Random security checks throughout Europe have increased due to the current refugee situation. Citizens or nationals traveling on passports from a country that requires a visa for Germany must obtain a SOFA certificate from the Regional Director, IMCOMEurope G-1, prior to arrival in Germany. For a list of these countries refer to the Foreign Clearance Guide, accessible only from a .gov domain, at www.fcg.pentagon.mil/fcg. cfm. Failing to get SOFA identification prior to arriving in Germany may result in denied entry and immediate deportation. U.S. citizens and foreign nationals from countries not requiring a visa for Germany, can enter without a SOFA certificate if they are unable to obtain one prior to departure. However, they should carry a

copy of the sponsor’s travel orders to Germany and must visit their servicing passport office to request the identification certificate within 90 days of arrival. What do I need to visit a foreign country as a tourist? Active duty military members must obtain a tourist passport to enter a foreign country as a tourist. When returning to Germany, they will need to show their military ID card and travel orders assigning them to Germany. If on leave, the member should also carry a valid leave form when traveling in and out of Germany. Leave forms need to identify the unit the member is assigned or attached to in Germany. U.S. citizen family members, civilians and contractors must also obtain a tourist passport to visit foreign countries. Command-sponsored civilians and their family mem-

bers as well as military family members will need to carry both the no-fee and tourist passport when on leisure travel and present the tourist passport when entering a foreign country and the no-fee passport with SOFA stamp when returning to Germany. Members should not use a no-fee passport for leisure travel doing so is at your own risk. All non-command-sponsored family members, local hire civilians and contractors will receive a SOFA card for their tourist passport since they are not eligible for a no-fee passport. Finally, always check the FCG for passport and visa requirements before making any travel plans. Practice the rule of three. Eligible individuals should always carry a valid and unexpired DOD ID card, passport and SOFA certificate when traveling.

Tribute to ultimate sacrifice by Airman 1st Class D. Blake Browning 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

A memorial run was held in the honor of Airman 1st Class Zachary Cuddeback outside the South Side Fitness Center March 4 on Ramstein. The sixth annual homage has become a tradition to members of the Ramstein populous. This year Airman Cuddeback’s father attended the event. “I’ve always been interested in coming over for one of the runs,” said retired Army Chief Warrant Officer Robert Cuddeback, father of the fallen Airman. “I wanted to come over specifically to show that I appreciate the support that the Ramstein community has given me and my family since his death.”

Approximately 300 participants, between runners and spectators took part in this year’s memorial run to remember the sacrifice made by one of their own. “Most people would tell you that he was just honorable, honest and helpful,” Robert Cuddeback said. A member of the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron, Airman Cuddeback’s life was taken in the line of duty March 2, 2011. “Cuddeback was doing a routine aircrew run,” said Tech. Sgt. Allen Brown, 86 VRS vehicle operator. “He was picking up some ‘deployers’ at Frankfurt International Airport, when a terrorist approached the bus he was driving. The terrorist opened fire killing one of the deployers, he then boarded the bus and unfortunately he killed Airman Cuddeback also.”

Thousands of miles away, Zach’s father said he could sense the presence of his son leaving. “It was a difficult day of course,” Robert Cuddeback said. “I knew right away actually. Before it was on the news, before anybody called me; there was just something spiritual and I knew Zach had passed. And probably 10 to 15 minutes later I received a call from my brother asking if I had seen the news. I tried to call Zach, and he didn’t answer his phone of course. So I kind of knew right away but about 10 to 12 hours later the casualty assistance officer came to the door.” Cuddeback believes the best thing to do is extract the wisdom from the situation and pass that guidance along so another Airman doesn’t fall victim to the same tragedy.

“What’s really important is that as a former soldier myself, retired military, I really want the Ramstein community as well as everywhere to understand that Zach’s death should not be in vain,” said Robert Cuddeback. “So we need to remain vigilant against our threats around the world. We need to remain vigilant personally and professionally. We need to work towards what our mission is, to protect the citizens at home. Protect America, protect our freedoms.” While this tragedy still shakes the hearts of many, the Ramstein community continues to honor the sacrifice made by one of their own. “We’re never planning on stopping,” said Brown. “As long as we have operators here on base we will be doing this event.”

Airman uses training to aid injured Soldier Story and photo by Airman 1st Class D. Blake Browning 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A fast-acting Airman assisted a Soldier after a vehicle collision Feb. 10 near Kaiserslautern. Airman Gregg Randolph, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron firefighter, described the scene he encountered while simply coming back to base. “I was on my way home from downtown Kaiserslautern around 11:30 p.m.,” Randolph said. “And on the way back I noticed someone lying on the ground near a car collision and it appeared they were injured. So, I turned the car around because they were on the other side of the road. When I got there I noticed no one was around so I grabbed a cone from inside my car and started blocking off traffic.” As a certified first responder, Randolph understood the sense of urgency required in an emergency situation and immediately notified the authorities. “After deterring traffic I went back to check on the injured person,” Randolph said. “There was snow on the ground so I grabbed a blanket out of my car to lay her on and took off my jacket to give to her. I went back to my car and grabbed two more jackets so I could support

her head. By that time the ambulance and fire department were on their way, and because she was able to move, I brought her to my car and turned the heat on.” It was during that time she revealed to him that she was a Soldier in the Army. “I waited until the ambulance arrived,” Randolph said. “While the emergency services were assisting her I called some of her friends and supervisor, and notified them of the situation; they agreed to meet her at the hospital.” A first-term Airman, Randolph has been training for approximately the past year. “I wasn’t on duty but this was my first emergency,” Randolph said. The training Randolph underwent at the Goodfellow Air Force Base taught him the basics of first aid, amongst other skills, which he has continued to hone in his current upgrade training. “I just relied on my training basically,” Randolph said. “I didn’t second-guess myself at all, it was just natural.” Airmen like Randolph are an asset to the Air Force and exemplify the core values instilled in Airmen from the dawn of basic military training, refined through their careers and extended on into their other endeavors.

Overcoming shadow of death: One Airman’s fight against depression by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Staff Sgt. Srun Sookmeewiriya, pronounced Sook-mee-vi-ri-ya, may seem like a happy and carefree Airman at first glance. The 313th Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron NCO in charge of reports regularly puts forth an earnest effort to keep his unit alive and running. The name Sookmeewiriya means happy in Thai, and for Sook’s coworkers, it suits him very well. “He’s like the morale person, that’s what everybody else refers him to,” said Master Sgt. Melissa Vela, 313 EOSS NCO in charge of console operations. “He’s so full of energy. When everybody’s tired, he would make a sound or be as loud as he could be just to perk up everybody else, and people just laugh at him. He’s so infectious, he makes everybody laugh.” However, Sook has a dark past which may take many by surprise. When he was young, in his native Thailand, he witnessed his mother committing suicide. “I just stood there and watched and didn’t know what to do,” he said. “I was thinking, ‘Is this for real? Is this happening?’ I was just stunned and thought, ‘why would she do that?’” One year later, Sook noticed his father was not acting like himself. He asked his father how he was doing and asked permission if he could go out and play with his friends. “It was a rough transition; my father drifted into depression,” Sook recalled. “He said, ‘I’m fine, just go out and play. I’ll see you when you get back.’” But the two never saw each other again. When he got home, Sook

found the door unlocked, his father lying lifeless with a gun in his hand, and his younger brother Thana struggling to survive. “I saw him lying there in bed,” Sook recounted about his father. “I wasn’t sure what happened. I tried to wake him up to see if he was still alive.” All kinds of thoughts started racing through Sook’s mind. His parents were gone, and his brother was dangling between life and death. “I thought I was alone,” he said. “I didn’t know where I was going to stay, and I didn’t know who I would go to now. My head was just spinning at that point, it was a shock. “It slowly sunk in that I didn’t have anybody to care for me anymore,” Sook added. Thana survived the gunshot, but was never the same — both physically and mentally. With his mother and father gone, Sook found himself taking care of the only family he had left. The two went into the care of a family member from their father’s first marriage. They sent Sook to a boarding school, where depression continued to haunt him. “They sent me to boarding school because no one wanted to take care of me, at least that’s how I felt as a kid,” he said. “I got bullied a lot in school. They taunted me saying, ‘You have no parents, you have no parents!’ At that point I just felt like I was alone.” Eventually, Sook decided he couldn’t take it anymore and wanted to end it all, and made his first suicide attempt with an overdose of prescription medication. He remembered hallucinating, then vomiting, and finally blacking out. When Sook woke up, he thought he had been out for just a few hours. But then he found out

he had been in a coma for two days, he said. In the course of time, Sook finished boarding school and eventually immigrated to the U.S., where Thana would join him soon after. Sook spent his early days in America with relatives from his father’s first marriage. He mentioned how he would bounce around from family to family because of his troubled personality. He also felt as if he was just an outsider because of his status as a “half-relative.” “I felt like I didn’t belong, because I wasn’t a part of their family,” Sook said. “I was just half blood. I didn’t feel any sense of emotion when I hugged them.” The feeling of being an outsider overwhelmed Sook. He made a second attempt but stopped after seeing that it wouldn’t work. “I didn’t want to deal with the state I was in: not feeling welcome and not feeling like I was part of the family,” he said, describing what he was feeling at the moment. “At that time as a kid, I thought that the best way was to just end it all and leave.” Sook tried to hide his attempted suicide, but his relatives eventually found out and sent him to the doctor to get help. His half-sister, Kim, was especially appalled, and confronted him about what he done. Kim grilled him, asking why he would do such a thing and why he thought that killing himself was the answer to his problems, and then she asked, “What about your brother?” “When she mentioned my brother, I totally thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m leaving him behind,’” Sook recalled. That’s when he decided to turn around and confront his issues, not run from them, he said. Sook described his brother as his inspiration in his fight against depression. “He was the only family I had up to that point,” Sook said. “It was me and him. He has been through a lot tougher things than I had. Because of the gunshot wound, he was scarred for life; he didn’t grow up normally. “But he never gave up,” Sook continued. “That’s one reason why I should not and will not give up on

him — because he didn’t either.” As part of his process of recovery, Sook found strength in his faith and his sister Kim, who helped him get back on his feet. “I got help spiritually,” he said. “I went to church regularly every Sunday with her, listened to the messages, and read the Bible. For me, that’s how I bounced back. “It took me a while, basically a couple years,” he added, explaining that his recovery process did not happen overnight. “I think I’m still bouncing back to this day. I think of this tragedy which happened to me as a lesson, and that lesson is to not repeat the same thing that they did.” As the years passed, Sook joined the Air Force as a civil engineer Airman, and later on as an air mobility controller. He also adopted Thana as his dependent, married and started a family. Sook noted that although his life still has its ups and downs, he copes by confiding in his wife. He also expressed gratefulness for the support his coworkers give him continuously. “Having a good work center in the Air Force actually helped me out a lot,” he said. “When I have other issues, they continue to help me out.” Vela described how surprised she was when Sook opened up his past to her, saying that she would have never guessed that an Airman like Sook would have such a traumatic past. “I was speechless the whole time he told his story,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, are you ok?’ To me, I can see the strength in his words and his actions. Seeing the strength that he had to come forth and tell his story is amazing.” Sook shares his story occasionally with the public, hoping to encourage people suffering from depression to seek help and not try to survive on their own. Opening up to people who care is important to overcoming life’s challenges, and there are many people standing by ready to assist in the battle against depression, he said. “There are so many agencies on base which can help,” Sook said. “Don’t bottle up those issues. If you stress out, talk it out. Find somebody who is willing to listen.” Sook encouraged Airmen to look for a cause, and do what it takes to survive so they can continue to fight for it. “Don’t give up, look for what you’re fighting for,” he said. “I fight for my brother, my wife and my kids. It’s their future and my future.”

Chop walnuts, basil, parsley and garlic. Put lemon zest, feta cheese, salt and pepper, walnut, basil, olive oil, parsley and garlic in a bowl. Stir and let this rest for 20 minutes to 1 hour. Boil the tortiglioni in salted water. Take out at the al dente stage. After straining tortiglioni, keep ½ cup of the boiling water. Cut chicory in half, remove the core and cut into ¾ inch pieces and put aside. Season lamb filet with sea salt and coarsely ground pepper. Roast the filet in peanut oil for 5 minutes on medium to high heat. Wrap in aluminum foil and let rest. Put onions in the leftover peanut oil pan. Let them simmer in the pan for two minutes. Add more heat as you put in the chicory. Let it roast for 1 minute then turn the heat off. Drain liquid from the foiled lamb and place in pan with the chicory and onion. Slice lamb in an angle so that the slices look a little larger. Return to aluminum foil. In the chicory and onion pan, add half of the pesto sauce and the reserved boiling water. Add tortiglioni and mix all together. To plate, make a bed of the tortiglioni pasta mixture. Put sliced lamb on top. Garnish with remaining pesto sauce, parsley and basil. The most important part of this recipe is to give the pesto sauce time to allow the flavors to mix with each other before going on with the recipe.

St. Patrick’s Day honors first Irish Christian missionary by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The Irish celebrate a national and religious holiday today — St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a day to honor Ireland’s first Christian missionary. March 17 is also an official holiday in Northern Ireland, the British overseas territory of Montserrat and the Canadian province of Newfoundland. But even in many other countries, Irish emigrants and even non-Irish celebrate the day with festivals, parades and other events. The St. Patrick’s Day custom came to America in 1737. The first parade with 770 participants was held in 1843 in Chicago. Today, more than 100 cities in the states hold St. Patrick’s Day parades, the largest of which is in New York City. According to historical documents, St. Patrick was not Irish. He was reportedly born in Scotland around 385, near the town of Dumbarton. His real name is believed to be Maewyn Succat and his parents belonged to a Roman family of high rank. Patrick lived a normal live for 16 years, before he was captured by pirates and forced into slavery in Ireland. He never was interested in God or the church, but being away from home and all alone, he turned to God and learned to pray while herding sheep. After being a slave for six years, Patrick dreamed that God told him it was time to go home. So he escaped on foot across 200 miles of unknown

land. After an adventurous sea voyage, he finally returned home. A couple of months later he visited St. Martin’s monastery at Tours and the island sanctuary of Lerins. Patrick placed himself under the guidance of a bishop, St. Germain. Several years later he promoted to the priesthood. He engaged in missionary works and after the bishop recommended Patrick to the Pope, he traveled to Rome. Pope Celestine entrusted Patrick with the mission of bringing Christianity to Ireland. Since he learned the Celtic language during his years of slavery, it was easy for him to spread the word of Christianity. He conquered one kingdom after another and destroyed Paganism. Despite several death threats, Patrick baptized, confirmed, preached and built churches, schools and monasteries. St. Patrick even was arrested several times, but escaped each time. He succeded in converting

almost the entire population of the island. Patrick died on March 17, 461 in Downpatrick, Ireland. That’s why St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated March 17. There are many legends to tell about Patrick. One says that he used the shamrock, which resembles a threeleafed clover to explain the meaning of the Trinity. He used it in his sermons to represent how the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit could all exist as separate elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day. Finding a four-leaf clover on St. Patrick’s Day is supposed to bring double good luck. Kissing the Blarney Stone supposedly brings the kisser the gift of persuasive eloquence. The stone is set in

the wall of the castle tower in the Irish village of Blarney. It is hard to reach. It’s between the main castle wall and the parapet. Kissers have to lie on their back and bend backwards and downwards, holding iron bars for support. The origins of the Blarney Stone’s magical properties aren’t clear, but one

legend says that an old woman cast a spell on the stone to reward a king who had saved her from drowning. Also associated with the Irish holiday are Leprechauns. Otherwise known as Irish fairies, leprechauns are small, unsociable, unfriendly men, who live alone. They are dressed like shoemakers, with a cocked hat and a leather apron. Legend says they possess a hidden pot of gold. If the leprechaun is caught by a treasure hunter, he must tell where the pot is. If the leprechaun can trick the hunter and vanish, all hopes of finding the treasure are lost. The color green is associated with St. Patrick’s Day because it is the color of spring, a shamrock and a color in Ireland’s flag. In many countries, people wear something green. School children started a tradition of their own — pinching classmates who forgot to wear green.
