Remembering D-Day 75 years later in Picauville by Airman 1st Class Kristof Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

PICAUVILLE, FRANCE  Ten United States Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa service members paid respects as they attended a ceremony held to commemorate all service

members that served on D-Day, June 6, 1944, at the U.S. Air Force monument in Picauville, France, June 4. U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. John B. Williams, HQ USAFEAFAFRICA mobilization assistant to the commander, provided key remarks and personal thoughts as

the ceremony’s guest speaker. “It’s been a lifetime ambition of mine to see the D-Day commemorations here,” said Williams. “This is the first year I’m attending Normandy for D-Day’s anniversary and this year is such a special year as it’s the 75th anniversary. With

D-Day, seeing the terrain where so many U.S. sacrifices were made is a poignant reminder of the cost of our freedom.” Williams went on to speak about the importance of families in See DDAY 75, Page 10

COMMENTARY

Make it the team you want!

by Chief Master Sgt. Daniel Guzman U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Command First Sergeant

Setting and sustaining a positive organizational culture is often associated with organizational leaders, business owners and project c hampions. A multitude of articles, books and studies exist on the impor tance and primary responsibility of leaders to cultivate a successful culture within their organization. This can lead to flawed expectations for “leadership” or “upper management” to be the sole generator of answers for solving issues such as process inefficiencies and low morale. It is known as the “ask the person in charge, I just work here” approach. I fell victim to this methodology during my time as an Airman and as a young, junior noncommissioned officer. I remember hearing about issues from my immediate leadership and about dissatisfaction with our assigned

leader’s solutions. Oddly enough, I don’t recall hearing or seeing a proposed course of action or potential alternate solution. “Ask the person in charge” was standard protocol that made working in these sections and organizations dreadful. According to organizational leadership consultant Michael D. Watkins, “organiz ational culture functions much like the human i m m u n e system in preventing viruses and bacteria from taking hold and damaging the body.” G o o d organizational culture keeps our teams and organizations healthy and functioning properly. Bad or toxic organizational culture can amount to poor performance, member dissatisfaction and eventual mission failure. Don’t get me wrong, leaders are principally accountable with an inherent responsibility to provide and uphold an organization’s vision, standards, and effective communication. It is important to deliver resources and person-

nel development required to ultimately set the team up for success. But, team members are just as critical in contributing when it comes to influencing culture and making their organization or team successful. As I look back at my 22-year career, I recall multiple examples where “we” the young airmen, section, and flight leads took charge of resources within our span of influence to handle issues affecting us. Arriving to a supposedly broken section as a young NCO and team member in a large flight, I remember asking myself what can I, and more importantly “we,” do to get this team on track. After much reflection, I realized “we” were faced with two simple options, continue to look up and point the finger, or go after solutions by leveraging the resources available. In essence, we needed to own it. After adopting this ownership approach, we noticed a change in our team’s culture and performance. Growing a positive organizational culture and shaping the organization into what we want it to be required an all-in effort. In three months, problems festering for years were finally resolved. And, we slowly figured out that you don’t have to be a leader to do leader things. For young leaders in training, ask yourself the following:

Are “we” holding ourselves accountable by making it a priority to be mentally, emotionally, physically, socially, spiritually fit and ready? Tending to these areas needs to be a crucial part of our daily routine in order to be better family members, Airmen, friends, and wingmen.

Are “we” looking to develop ourselves, our family members and our peers to be better people and professionals? Specifically, “we” need to grow ourselves by making a habitual deliberate effort to feed our brains by reading, listening to podcasts, meditating, then sharing what we learn with our families and peers. Are “we” taking the time to be true wingmen? “We” should be looking out for each other’s welfare on a personal, as well as professional, level. Are “we” pushing the envelope when it comes to being innovative? “We” regularly need to further refine the programs and procedures we use by refusing to settle for the status quo. Are “we” holding the line with regard to workplace conduct and discipline? It is important to step up and in when we witness something that is illegal, unethical or immoral.

Do “we” take time to celebrate each other’s personal and professional accomplishments? This means we should be ten times as happy for our teammates’ accomplishments as we would be for our own. We need to make it a point to show up and show out when the opportunity to recognize and support our team presents itself. When challenges arise do “we” look for “leadership” or “upper management” to come and solve our problems? We need to look to the team mates to our left and right and craft a solution with the resources we have available, and up-channel what we have done to attempt and resolve the situation at hand. I often told my previous squadron commander and mentor “Sir, nobody wants to play for the Bad News Bears.” Nobody wants to be a part of a dysfunctional, laughing stock outfit. By relentlessly tackling the questions outlined, “we” can get, and keep an organization’s culture in great shape. Our goal should never be to be part of something that is just good enough, but to be a part of something great! Ultimately, “we” leaders and team members have to be willing to put in the time and effort to cultivate and maintain an organizational culture “we” are proud of. We need to shape our team, the team we want — a winner!

Story and photo by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Attention to those packing up and leaving the Kaiserslautern Military Community: Moving companies that support the KMC have already reached their capacity for customers until June 20. The 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron Personal Property Office advises movers to call them four weeks before moving to begin booking the process. This year, May to July is peak moving season for personnel in the KMC, according to Staff Sgt. Donald Perez, 86th LRS Traffic Management Office flight administrative training manager. Perez expects additional blackout days throughout the summer as TMO continues booking moves. Perez said many members wait too long to begin the household moving process, thereby causing additional stress to the already stressful moving process. In worstcase scenarios, members have to leave their possessions in someone else’s hands and sign over general power of attorney, or there is a potential for

loss of assignment. “It really falls on the outprocessing members to get their orders to us in a timely manner,” Perez said. Members can’t get too far ahead of themselves, though. Perez discourages purchasing airline tickets or terminating housing leases until members have received a date of confirmation, via email or phone call, from a local mover. TMO’s policy is to book no earlier than four weeks out. Perez said that it is good to keep in mind that, from the point of booking, the entire moving process takes an average of two weeks, depending on the customer. The process is as follows: 1. After completing the 86th Military Personnel Flight’s out-processing checklist, members will receive their PCS orders. 2. Members must take their PCS orders to the 86th LRS TMO PPO on Ramstein, Bldg. 2106. The PPO will not accept draft orders. 3. The PPO gives the member a date for a briefing that will go over tentative dates, how to prepare the house, what to expect from the mov-

ing company, any personal questions, and the difference between household goods, unaccompanied baggage,

and professional gear. 4. The moving company will do a pre-move survey at the member’s house or over the

It is very important to keep personal documents, such as passports, in a safe place while the movers are working. This will ensure that the movers don’t unwittingly pack up necessary documents with everything else. To contact the 86th LRS PPO office and begin booking the moving process, members may call 06315365509, or DSN 480 5509.

The 435th SFS Airmen were awarded first place in the 10K ruck march category. More than 500 participants and 47 volunteers attended the event to honor Airey’s legacy and resilience as a prisoner of war during World War II.

Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Nesha Humes Stanton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs It was 1944 and the U.S. was in the height of World War II when a B-24 Liberator plummeted to the ground after being shot down. The crew bailed out onto enemy territory, leaving the surviving Airmen to be captured and detained. Paul Airey, the Liberator’s aerial gunner, was one of them. Airey endured 10 months as a prisoner of war, and was among few who survived dysentery, exhaustion and star-

vation, while being forced to march 400 miles across Germany during one of the coldest winters in history. The British eventually rescued Airey and the other POWs. Airey persevered to continue his story. The combat veteran regained his strength, and went on to serve as a first sergeant, personnel sergeant major, and in 1967, he was hand-selected as the first chief master sergeant of the Air Force. Kaiserslautern Military Community members commemorated Airey, and his

resilience during the Fourth Annual Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Paul Airey Memorial Ruck on Ramstein Air Base, May 29. “Today, you did more than just remember, you did more than post a somber message on social media,” said U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Robert Merriman, 86th Maintenance Squadron superintendent. “Today, you chose to remember through your personal efforts — building resiliency through fitness, both mental and physical — and through fellowship with your

brothers and sisters in arms.” With the help of about 50 volunteers, more than 500 participants lined up to ruck, run, and walk various distances for the event. “The event is a huge success; every year it’s a huge success,” said Robert Lovett, 603rd Air Operations Center facility manager. “The turnout is great, the weather is great, we’re having a great time.” Lovett said he hopes the attendees gain some history on Chief Airey and the importance of us being here in Europe. “We have a reason for being in Germany and that’s to defend the U.S. and our allies. It stems all the way back to the second world war and our presence here,”

More than 500 participants and 47 volunteers attended the event to honor Airey’s legacy and resilience as a prisoner of war during World War II.

Lovett continued. Merriman concluded with closing remarks and stated: “Today, you challenged yourselves to build teams, you fought through adversity and focused on the task at hand, all with Chief Master Sgt. Paul Airey’s memory cheering you on, believing in you and your team... We choose to remember Chief Airey [with this ruck] as his legacy is more relevant now, than ever.” Airey passed away in 2009, yet his legacy and story of courage lives on.

Senior leaders visited Aviano as part of the first USAFE-sponsored integrated air and missile defense exercise taking place at various locations in Italy, Croatia and Slovenia. Astral Knight is the first USAFEsponsored integrated air and missile defense exercise but it will not be the last, said Basham. He continued by saying Airmen and Soldiers, along with partner nation service members, will encounter demanding scenarios in the coming days that are designed to test the IAMD capabilities. During the press conference that was held, both Basham and Frigerio emphasized the importance of enhancing the strong and strategic relationships between allies and partners from strategic locations in Europe. This exercise gives our forces the opportunity to train together and improve our ability to operate together in order to enhance collective readiness, said Frigerio. The U.S. and Europe are mutually committed to facing emerging malignant forces and evolving strategic challenges. The 31st Fighter Wing has been stationed in Aviano for 25 years. This testifies the strong commitment the U.S. has toward Europe, and in particular the solid relationship and friendship between the U.S. and Italy, said Frigerio. Participation in multinational exercises enhances the professional relationships and improves overall coordination with allies and partner militaries during times of crisis. “Bringing together multiple nations for an exercise of this size and this scope, is crucial to fostering those relationships and partnerships,â€? said Basham. Astral Knight 2019 ensures that we are in the proper stance, and ready to respond to any situation with speed and agility. Enhancing our readiness, through demanding and challenging exercises allows our joint and multinational team to be ready for any challenges we may face. Before departing, the senior lead-

New director joins IMCOM-Europe

IMCOM-Europe Command Sgt. Maj. Samara Pitre affixes the organization’s lapel pin for Tommy Mize, director of IMCOM-Europe.

by Ray Johnson Installation Management CommandEurope Public Affairs Installation Management Command-Europe welcomed its new director while bidding farewell to his predecessor during a transition of authority ceremony held in Sembach, May 31. Tommy Mize becomes only the fifth director for IMCOM-Europe, replacing Michael Formica, who will now serve as deputy to the commanding general of the Army’s Combined Arms Center. Lt. Gen. Chris Cavoli, commander of U.S. Army Europe, who hosted the ceremony, credited Formica for building a strong rapport that exists

today between USAREUR and IMCOM-Europe. “I don’t think there is a better relationship between two commands in the Army,” said Cavoli. The general described Formica as a “thoughtful, warm leader; one who cares about people…and that is a gift to all of us.” Formica took the reins of IMCOM-Europe in late 2014, when the U.S. military on this continent was set in a very different force posture. The Army had undergone more than a decade of transformation in Europe, with 30,000 Soldiers standing guard here when once there were 10 times that number. Just a few years earlier, the First Armored Division had moved to Fort

Bliss, Texas, and V Corps was inactivated. Moreover, garrison numbers had dropped from 21 to only seven enduring locations. However, major changes had begun with Russia annexing Crimea seven months earlier. “In response, we moved our stance from engagement to assurance, deterrence and defense,” recalled Formica, adding that “five years later we find ourselves operating from a more complex environment.” However, Formica believes that such challenges also deliver opportunities for success, which he considers a calling card for USAREUR and IMCOM-Europe. “We jointly positioned our garrisons and forward sites to support an increased warfight-

er presence,” he said. “We are reshaping garrisons as platforms for Army readiness. We are providing vital infrastructure and programs to organize, train, equip, deploy and conduct combat operations.” As for Soldier and family quality-of-life programs, Formica said IMCOM “will never lose sight of that calling; we have undergone major changes, but our focus remains the same, especially at the installation level, where we are the Army’s home.” Now charged with overseeing that mission is Mize, who joins the IMCOM team from U.S. Forces Korea as its director of transformation and restationing. Prior to entering the civilian ranks, he wore the Army uni-

form for 30 years as an engineer officer, including multiple deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. “I am both humbled and excited to be back in IMCOM,” said Mize, who served as deputy to the commander of U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan, Republic of Korea, from 2015-2017. “To all our professionals, I want to thank you for what you do each and every day in supporting our units and communities,” Mize said. “There will be challenges ahead, there always are when you strive to do great things in a dynamic, unpredictable environment. Together, we will overcome for the benefit of our Soldiers, civilians and family members. They deserve nothing less.”

DDAY 75 from Page 1 Normandy as D-Day is remembered today. “I’ve had the opportunity to experience the hospitality and gratitude of the people of Normandy as we think back to D-Day,” said Williams. “When you talk with people here you can see D-Day is a part of their family memories and these memories are very real for them, as if it happened yesterday. I spoke with some people that recalled the events as they were children at the time and, with tears in their eyes, they said ‘thank you.’” Williams said it’s very gratifying to know the events that transpired 75 years ago will be remembered well into the future in large part due to the efforts made by the French to ensure the memories of D-Day remain eternal. U.S. Air Force Col. Joseph Wenckus, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander, who attended the ceremony with Mr. Scott Lockard, 86th Airlift Wing vice director, and other service members from USAFE-AFAFRICA, also shared thoughts on the D-Day invasion and the commemorations that followed 75 years later. Wenckus, who has visited Normandy several times and has studied the D-Day battle for years, believes the peace experienced today should not only be valued but protected. “One of the speakers today spoke about the fragility of peace and how desperately U.S. forces fought to gain peace on the European continent. That’s something we can’t take for granted. At Ramstein Air Base, in particular, we need to treasure the peace we are enjoying, and making sure we are ready to defend ourselves at a moments’ notice is a key part in what we do on a day-to-day basis.” Today, Picauville, firmly stands as a symbol of peace, no matter how fragile peace may be, due to the deep ties the

village has to “The Longest Day,” June 6, 1944. In the preparation phase of Operation Overlord, otherwise known as D-Day, the small village was intended to be one of the first towns liberated by the Allied forces. The 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, today known as the 82nd Airborne Division, was charged with seizing Picauville with the intention of using the land as an aviation runway for P-47 Thunderbolts belonging to the 405th Fighter Group. On the fateful day of June 6, 1944, C-47s carrying the 508th PIR were on target for the drop zone of Picauville. However, due to heavy anti-aircraft

fire the pilots flew above the cloud layer, consequently reducing their own visibility. Despite being on target for Picauville, the 508th PIR dropped from the C-47s at an altitude far too high at approximately 700 meters; a standard drop height being 150 meters. Due to the heavy anti-aircraft defenses, the difficulties encountered by the pilots caused half of the regiments’ paratroopers to land more than 15 kilometers from the drop zone, thus unable to accomplish their objective of seizing the village the same night. Approximately three hours after the landing, good fortune swung in the favor of Allied forces when 12

Hundreds of guests and active duty service members from the United States and Germany gather around the U.S. Air Force monument near the Eglise Saint-Candide de Picauville church for a ceremony honoring all airborne troops and flight crew that served on D-Day in Picauville, France, June 4. The ceremony was one of 55 ceremonies held between June 1 to 9 in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

June 14, 2019 paratroopers from the 508th PIR, who sought information from civilians living in the area, waved over an approaching vehicle for questioning. The U.S. paratroopers opened fire on the vehicle after the driver refused to stop. In the wreckage, the paratroopers pulled out a deceased German General, Wilhelm Falley, commander of the German infantry division controlling Picauville. This loss proved to be a crippling blow to the axis defense controlling the village, however, it was not enough to overtake the area until four days later when an Allied offensive finally managed to seize the village. Under Allied control, the aviation runway was built as planned for the P-47 Thunderbolts during their night missions. The history of the village during WWII makes Picauville a more than deserving candidate and location for D-Day commemorations, such as the one seen on June 4 during the 75th anniversary of D-Day. French national, Denis Dennebouy, President of the Association of Picauville, said he is grateful for the persistent presence of U.S. forces during D-Day commemorations. At the ceremony, Dennebouy, in suit and tie, wore several pins. Individually they showed support to one entity but together, seen on one suit, created a sum greater than its parts. Dennebouy wore a U.S. Air Force pin, one for the U.S. Army, a U.S.-French flag and a German-French flag pin. Together, they illustrated not only Dennebouy’s sense of patriotism for his country but his gratitude for U.S. forces and even forgiveness for the enemies of yesterday. Dennebouy, who spoke during the ceremony, offered a lasting message for all generations as D-Day is remembered 75 years later. “We will never forget,” said Dennebouy. “Freedom and peace are very costly. The blood shed for Normandy and Europe gave us the freedom and peace we have today. We will never forget the 101st Airborne Division, the 82nd Airborne Division and the 435th Troop Carrier Group. I want people to remember their sacrifice because without them we would not have our freedom and peace today.” Towards the ceremony’s conclusion, U.S. Army Airborne infantrymen expressed their gratitude to the U.S. D-Day liberators who attended the ceremony. Some then proceeded to swap patches with German Airborne infantrymen as mementos to mark the commemorations. These acts evidenced two ideas: the cost of freedom will never be forgotten and the enemy of yesterday is the friend of today.

Catholics celebrate ‘Fronleichnam’ or Corpus Christi day, June 20 by Jutta Lausberg-Saam 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

On June 20, Germany’s Catholics celebrate “Fronleichnam” or Corpus Christi day. This regional holiday is observed in Rineland-Palatinate, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland. All stores and official institutions will be closed. Areas with a mainly Catholic population and some Catholic communities in Saxony and Thuringia will also observe this holiday. The word “Fronleichnam” derives from the middle high German words “fron,” meaning Lord, and “lichnam,” meaning body. In the liturgy, the feast is called the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. Legend says that during a prayer, Augustinian nun Juliana saw a small black spot on the moon. Christ explained to her that the moon meant the church year, and the black spot the absence of a feast of the altar sacrament.

In 1264, Pope Urban IV declared Corpus Christi day as a feast to be observed by the entire Catholic Church. The most important part of the Corpus Christi observance is the Holy Mass. Following mass, Catholics will walk in a procession in which the communion wafer will has special meaning. The priest leads participants down a colorfully decorated route carrying the communion wafer in a monstrance, a pompous vessel with a small window through which the communion wafer can be seen. In some areas, people come from far away to be part of the procession. Children also have a very special role on this day as they sprinkle flower leaves on the path where the monstrance is carried. Processions in the Kaiserslautern Military Community will be held 9 a.m. on the Stiftsplatz in Kaiserslautern, 9:30 a.m. at St. Nikolaus Church in RamsteinMiesenbach, and 10 a.m. at the Heilig Kreuz Church in Weilerbach.

SCOTLAND’S OUTER HEBRIDES I first fell in love with the Outer Hebrides, or Hebs as I call them for no reason at all, during a class trip when I was 18 years old. Do you know how beautiful a piece of nature has to be to convince a social-media addicted, fresh-air-allergy-sufferer and overall hard-to-impress millenial that its cold, rainy, wifi-less shores are the epitome of heaven on earth? Absolutely beautiful, I tell you. The islands boast wildlife such as eagles, red deer, otters and spectacular marine life including dolphins, orcas and humpbacks, if you’re lucky. And I haven’t even gotten started on shooting stars and northern lights that can shine so brightly because of a complete lack of light pollution. Thanks to the infamous rainy weather, rainbows are extremely likely, sometimes even two at once, and always worth the soaked boots (I called them feet bathtubs throughout my whole trip but that’s enough of my travel jargon for one article).

The Outer Hebrides are a few small islands off the west coast of Scotland, the biggest one being split into two: Harris and Lewis. North Uist, South

Uist and Barra are smaller islands in the south of Harris/Lewis. Additionally, there are more than fifty uninhabited islands that belong to the Outer Hebrides. Its average annual temperature is 44°F/6°C so you can imagine that it’s not the ideal place for tanning but summers are quite mild and without uncomfortably cold air, we would never be able to see the Northern Lights so we can’t really complain about that either, can we? It rains a lot, which only makes the sunshine that much more appreciated. Streets are shared with sheep and it’s a very wholesome experience. The only kind of traffic jam I want to be stuck in on my morning commute, to be honest. Landscape White, sandy beaches that can compete with the Caribbean or Bahamas line the western coast of South and North Uist and Harris, while rough waves hit the cliffs and shores of Lewis in the north. During the summer months, the ferries are always packed with cars and travelers but most of the time you will find yourself all alone with the ocean. Where do all these people and camper vans go once they get off the ferry? I have no idea. All I know is that this is the place to go if you want to become one with nature. There is exactly one large grocery store in Stornoway and about three mini shops spread across the rest of the island so elaborate six-course meals aren’t really on the menu here and planning ahead is key. However, you’ll find lots of egg boxes along the street where you can just pull over and take some in return for a small fee so a lack of protein is not one of the island’s main concerns. Other than that there’s not much left to do but listen to the waves and breathe that fresh sea air while you unplug for a few days.

History Stepping onto the island is almost like stepping back in time. Overpopulation, industrialization and naturedesecrating block buildings have not reached the Outer Hebrides, making them an oasis for nature and wildlife lovers. A short drive takes you from Stornoway, the island’s biggest and quite modern town with a whopping 8,000 inhabitants, through 4,000 years of history to the Standing Stones of Callanish, which were erected in Neolithic times and aided in rituals during the Bronze Age. Some of the oldest rocks on earth can be found on this little piece of land. At small shops and cafés (there are very few of them so maybe bring some tea bags just in case), you will hear people nonchalantly speak Gaelic with each other as the islands have the biggest amount of people still able to speak it in all of Scotland. Efforts are made to keep the language alive and the number of speakers did not decrease in the last decade, which I believe is a beautiful sign of the Scots’ desire to keep their history alive.

Black Houses If you’re interested in finding out more about the island’s history and how its inhabitants lived for many years, you may want to visit the fully furnished Arnol Blackhouse on the Isle of Lewis, which shows you inside both a traditional blackhouse (only vacated 1966) with an open peat fire in the center and the more recent answer to it, the Whitehouse just across the street. Fun fact: there are virtually no trees on the island so dried peat was the only way to make a fire. Nowadays you may only know the scent from whiskey. Blackhouses are thick-walled dwellings where animals and sometimes multiple generations lived gathered around one fireplace. Thatched roofs made of twigs and heather and overlaid with straw were weighed down with stones. “Communal living” is a key term here as it is hard to imagine how tight the space would have gotten with your pet goats, cattle and even horses, grandma, grandpa and your annoying little siblings shar-

ing one bedroom. To this day, the museum makes sure the fire never goes out. As you can imagine, the island wasn’t the easiest place to live back in the day and keeping the fire going was absolutely essential. Whitehouses didn’t house animals inside anymore as a new health bill was introduced in the 1900s and forbade this type of living arrangement. They also contained multiple fire sources throughout the house and chimneys transporting the black peat smoke outside rather than covering the walls and ceilings in a thick layer of ashes. As a matter of fact, they were named white houses because the interiors were so light and pleasant thanks to wallpaper and windows, which then caused the older houses to be referred to as blackhouses. Before Whitehouses came along they would have been simply called houses. Fascinating, right? Visit virtualheb.com to take a virtual tour through one of these houses. Where to Stay Gearrannan Blackhouse Village is as unique an accommodation as it gets. The historic blackhouses are fully modernized inside with all the charm of two hundred years ago and all the heating, plumbing

and comfort of modern times. You can either rent an entire cottage for your family or rent a room or even just a bed in the bunkhouse, which has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and seating area. During the summer months, a small cafe and gift shop as well as a museum depicting traditional island life are open on the premises, too. The houses are for rent in the winter months as well. The five-house village is right next to the ocean with fantastic sunsets over the water, spectacular hiking trails starting right there on your doorstep, sheep greeting you in the morning and an unparalleled serenity all around. Vigadale Guest House The best place to stay on Harris might be Vigadale Guest House. The B&B is located close to Tarbert Ferry Terminal, only a short drive from the beaches and in the middle of majestical hiking or cycling areas. It is run with love and the famous regional hospitality that will make you feel right at home. There is a guest living and dining room, a guest kitchen, an outdoor seating area and a wooden hot tub from which you can watch

the Northern Lights dance it out on a clear night. The owner’s daughter studies Gaelic at school and if you ask nicely she might introduce you to a song or two. There really aren’t that many B&Bs or even hostels spread across the four main islands so it is recommended to book in advance as they get really busy during the summer months and failing to spontaneously find accommodation might result in either a very expensive one or you driving all the way up to Stornoway where proper hotels will have availabilities for you. Alternatively, you can always bring a tent or spend the night in your car. For an honesty fee of 5 pound sterling a night, you can park in many designated areas right next to the beach. Check out booking.com and airbnb.com for private accommodation and see hostel-scotland.co.uk for shared dorms and bunkhouses. The Temple Cafe This beautiful cafe is located on Harris, south of the Tarbert ferry terminal and en route to the southern islands like Uist and Barra. It has a changing lunch menu, super fresh and homemade dishes with a lovely view of the island’s signature scenery. Outdoor seating is perfect for a sunny afternoon while the interior is ideal for cozying up with a mug of hot chocolate. It’s open Tuesday through Sunday and now accepts card payments as well. Stornoway Black Pudding While you’re in Stornoway, you might want to try a Scottish delicacy fittingly called ‘Stornoway Black Pudding’, which has been called the best sausage made in the UK by The Guardian. It’s very similar to the German ‘Blutwurst’ (blood sausage) and

Page 23

certainly not for everyone but if you can eat a deep fried Mars bar (another one of those weird Scottish delicacies that I actually tried myself and will recommend if you’re crazy enough), you can handle a Stornoway Black Pudding, which, another fun fact, may only be called that if produced on the Western Isles. Getting There You can drive to Scotland with your own car and while it’s certainly a spectacular road trip, it does take quite a while and might not be ideal for a oneweek vacation as it includes 2 ferry trips and crosses about 4 countries. There are flights to Stornoway on Lewis from Manchester and car rental options on site. You can also fly to Edinburgh or Glasgow and explore the beauty of the Scottish Highlands on your way to the island. If you do rent a car on the mainland, make sure to gas up before going on the ferry as Hebridean gas stations are spread out and are often more expensive. Ferries leave from Uig on the Isle of Skye (to Tarbert, Harris) and Ullapool in the north of the mainland (to Stornoway, Lewis). P.S. I’ve already booked my next trip to the Hebs and I can just smell the peat fires whenever I think of it!
