CHERBOURG, FRANCE — “Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force: you are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.” U.S. Army Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War II, spoke these words to his troops before the Battle of Normandy in 1944. The war had been raging for several years, and now the U.S. and its allies decided to invade enemy-occupied territory. Eisenhower, knowing the operation would be costly, prepared his men to face an epic struggle. “Your task will not be an easy one,” See D-DAY, Page 2

The partnership between host nation law enforcement and U.S. forces can be traced back to 1976, when U.S. Air Forces in Europe ceded Wiesbaden to the U.S. Army and moved all major operations west of the Rhine River. D-DAY from Page 1 he said. “Your enemy is well-trained, well-equipped, and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.” The battle, known famously as D-Day, was catastrophic. On the first day of the invasion alone, Allied casualties exceeded 10,000 troops. Throughout the course of the campaign, the casualties multiplied to more than 200,000. However, the Allies managed to break through enemy defenses and capture critical beachheads. These achievements paved the way for the liberation of Europe — and ultimately victory over the enemy. Fast forward 74 years later: U.S. and allied troops landed upon Normandy again — not to liberate the region from tyranny, but to honor those who did. Aircraft from the U.S. and other allied nations airdropped parachutists, both military and civilian, over the town of Sainte-Mère-Église to commemorate the Normandy campaign. Many of the aircraft in the formation came from the 37th Airlift Squadron, based on Ramstein Air Base. The 37th AS is a descendant unit of the 37th Troop Carrier Squadron, which dropped paratroopers near Sainte-Mère-Église on D-Day. “The significance of us being here is to remind the people of what was achieved here,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Foley, a 37th AS C-130J Super Hercules aircraft instructor pilot who served as the mission commander for the Ramstein Airmen. “It’s been an amazing experience to see the French people still excited about D-Day and the liberation of France. It’s something that I’ll always remember, and it will always stick out in my mind because there is nothing else that I’ve experienced like it.” Foley emphasized the importance of memorializing D-Day, saying that the event will provide valuable lessons to current and future generations. U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Richard G. Moore Jr., commander of the 86th Airlift Wing (which includes the

D-Day lives on in the partnerships forged between the U.S. and its partners in Europe today. Europe lives peacefully because of the courageous sacrifice of those who descended upon Normandy more than seven decades ago, he said.

Paratroopers descend upon Sainte-Mère-Église, France, June 3.

“U.S. forces continue to stand with our European allies and partners ensuring Europe is whole, free, prosperous, and at peace,” Moore said. “As we reflect on this 74th anniversary of D-Day, please take a moment to consider the powerful stories of these heroes and their courage. Think about the reality of so many lives lost in defense of our nation and allies, and the special grace shown by the families left behind. Reflect upon the sacrifice of those who gave their lives to guarantee the freedoms we enjoy today.” If one were to visit Omaha Beach today, they might find the scene typical of a sunlit shore: children playing and flying kites, couples walking hand in hand along the sea, and tourists scouring the sand for shells. It can be difficult to imagine that the beach was the site of one of the bloodiest days in history. But if they look in the hills above, they would see the Normandy American Cemetery where more than 9,000 U.S. troops rest in peace. The endless rows of white stone crosses and Stars of David serve as sobering reminders of the epic battle which took place there. “This is something that changed the course of the world,” he said. “It changed the shape of Europe and our relationship with our allies across the world. It was a big deal in the 1940s, it’s a big deal now in 2018, and it will still be a big deal 10 years from now.” When Eisenhower concluded his D-Day speech, he envisioned an era where liberty would overthrow tyranny. Both Moore and Foley would agree that this is a mission yet to be fully accomplished. “The tide has turned,” Eisenhower said to his men. “The free men of the world are marching together to victory. I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory. Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.”

One person’s trash is another person’s treasure Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Force Support Squadron sponsors an Auto Recycling Center for military members and their dependents looking to repair, get rid of, or purchase a car. There are two ways to buy a vehicle at the Auto Recycling Center: customers can bid in an auction or just outright buy the car. “Auctions with sealed bids take place from the 1st through the 15th of every month,” said Casey Buckheister, 86th FSS tool and equipment operator. “The highest bidder has 48 hours to inspect the car and decide if they want to keep their purchase.” If the customer decides to not purchase the vehicle after inspecting it, the next highest bidder gets priority. If a car has no bid on it, it will be sold for a flat

price of 350 U.S. dollars, said Buckheister. Customers can pay with cash or check. Credit cards and euro are not accepted. “The Auto Recycling Center also provides a pick-and-pull service,” said Buckheister. “Meaning customers need to bring their own tools to retrieve the needed car parts. “We have to drain the cars before we put them in the yard, but we do not pull the parts ourselves,” continued Buckheister. Old tires, batteries and scrap metal can also be discarded in the various dumpsters at the Auto Recycling Center. The Auto Recycling Center is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May to September and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. from October to April. It is located outside the Ramstein East Gate at building 5122. Brian Davidson searches for car parts May 17 at the 86th Force Support Squadron Auto Recycling Center near Ramstein Air Base. Mindfulness helps build resilient Force Story and photos by Senior Airman Devin M. Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Jannell MacAulay, leadership and performance specialist and consultant, spoke to Airmen about “Mindfulness” June 4 at Ramstein Air Base. Mindfulness is a person’s ability to be fully present, aware of where they are and what they’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around them. MacAulay, who has a doctorate degree in the field of strategic health and human performance, spoke about how mindfulness can lead to success. “In the pursuit of success, we all end up in a space where we start to sacrifice ourselves along the way - in particular our health and our relationships,” MacAulay said. “I’m here to offer you an alternative. You don’t have to sacrifice those things on the pathway to success.” For MacAulay, that pathway to mindfulness and success came at a moment when she felt as if she was being pulled by everybody in different directions. “One night I was giving my son a bath and all of the sudden while bathing him, trying to multitask, he looked up and put both hands on my face and asked, ‘Mommy, what’s wrong?’” she said. “Instead of being in the moment with him, I was distracted.” The distracted mind MacAulay displayed in that moment was a stark contrast from what she had displayed as a combat aviator, who had deployed numerous times. “What I found after flying planes for

so many years of my life, I never translated the same concept in my own life,” she said. “I needed to learn to live life better, and ‘put on my own oxygen mask’ to serve others. That’s what I devoted the last few years of my life to.” During her stead as an Air Force officer, MacAulay said research found that applying resilience techniques to include mindfulness training can help protect service member’s mental states prior to their deployments. “From a purely preventative state, leadership wants their troops to be protected,” MacAulay said. “We know you will experience psychological and emotional trauma in a combat environment.

It’s stressful, it’s unpredictable yet, now researchers know we can protect your brains against it.” Air Force leadership actively speaks on the importance of the four pillars of Comprehensive Airman Fitness, and mindfulness training falls directly in line with the mental aspect. “I think it’s vitally important because the results are speaking for themselves,” said MacAulay. Some of the results came from a performance improvement program held at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, and used a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness skills and sports psychology on both fighter

pilots and explosive ordnance disposal technicians. As a part of the program, the pilots and technicians set aside time during their day to take a step back and think, observe life in the present moment, and brought their thoughts back onto the then current topic of interest. “The fighter pilots were improving their reaction times by up to 2.5 seconds, and EOD techs were shaving almost a minute and a half off of their tasks,” said MacAulay. “Now this is performance data. Not only will it make you feel good; not only can it improve your focus; it can improve your performance at your job.” The military veteran and strategic health and human performance specialist also discovered mindfulness training can help outside of high-stress environments and improve cognitive function during casual day-to-day circumstance to help a person perform better. MacAulay actively used mindfulness training during her time as a squadron commander and slowly built the trust with the Airmen to better utilize the training. Soon after, the squadron was recognized as Airfield Operations Complex of the Year for 2016, as well as the Air Mobility Command Operations Support Squadron of the year for 2016, and many other accomplishments. USAG RP welcomes Waterhouse as new CSM by Mary Ann Davis Installation Mangement Command Public Affairs The U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz community welcomed its new top enlisted leader during an assumption of responsibility ceremony, June 6, at Rhine Ordnance Barracks. Command Sgt. Maj. D. “Brett” Waterhouse brings 27 years of training and experience to the garrison’s highest noncommissioned officer position that provides support and oversight of 29 sites with more than 50,000 Soldiers, government civilian employees and their families. He is also responsible for enabling readiness capabilities and ensuring first-class processing, equipping and training of thousands of rotational forces from the U.S. and allied nations as they answer the call to forward deploy eastward in a show of strength, partnership and deterrence. “As the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Command Sergeant Major, Brett Waterhouse’s mission is as complex as it is important, providing support for 29 individual sites across our widespread footprint of almost 100 miles to some of the United States’ most important military organizations and finest warfighters,” said USAG RP Commander Col. Keith E. Igyarto. “We’ll need strong enlisted leadership for our Soldiers to navigate upcoming changes, and I’m confident we will have that in Command Sergeant Major Waterhouse.” The command sergeant major came to the garrison from the United States Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle, Pa., where he served as a senior noncommissioned officer researcher at the Army’s preeminent museum and research complex, devoted to educating and preserving the legacy of Soldiers. From his recent experience, he spoke to the historical significance of his ceremony date. “Today marks the 74th anniversary of Operation Overlord — the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, most

D-Day was an epic multinational amphibious and airborne operation that forged partnerships and reinforced transatlantic bonds that remain strong to this day,” said Waterhouse, who counts himself among today’s U.S. Soldiers, who remain indebted to these WWII veterans. “And what better way to illustrate those strong bonds than with an airborne jump. A few days ago, more than 500 United States, French, Dutch, Romanian and German paratroopers jumped from nine [multinational] aircraft in France to pay tribute to D-Day veterans who demonstrated selfless service and sacrifice characteristic of the greatest generation.” Alongside the garrison commander, Waterhouse will be at the forefront of directing and leveraging U.S. Army Europe’s rapid response capabilities in overseeing the garrison’s unparalleled logistical support for downrange operations and crisis response as it demonstrates the Army’s abilities to deploy, mass and sustain combat power across the theater. “Today marks my first day as your command sergeant major. KMC service members shoulder rucksacks in remembrance Story and photos by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For the past three years, Ramstein service members have packed their rucks, laced up their boots, and gathered in memory of the first Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force. More than 400 service members participated in the Third Annual Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Paul Airey Memorial Ruck/March/Run June 1 on Ramstein Air Base. Airey served as a B-24 Liberator aerial gunner during World War II and, in 1944, crashed onto enemy territory, where he became a prisoner of war. During one of the coldest winters in history, Airey and other POWs were forced to march approximately 400 miles across Germany. By the time the British rescued Airey, he, like many of the others, was stricken with dysentery and weighed a mere 100 pounds. Yet, he recovered and continued to serve with such vigor that in 1967, he became chief master sergeant of the Air Force, where he tackled matters such as welfare and effective utilization and progress of the enlisted members of the Air Force. Airey retired in 1970, but continued shaping the Air Force and engaging with Airmen until he passed away in 2009. “We thought it was fitting to honor Airey’s legacy and resilience, and what he and his team endured as POWs,” said Robert Lovett, 603rd Air Operations Center facility manager. “We want to let our servicemen know their history and the heritage of the Air Force.” Lovett had met Airey on several

occasions, and said Airey had a love for Airmen, team building, and for pushing Airmen to be the best they can be. “I think if he could be here he would see the teamwork and the resiliency that the ruck marchers show,” Lovett said. “He’d be proud that someone is remembering Air Force history. The point is honoring, respecting and remembering, because once you know your history, it can propel you in a better direction.” Lovett also stressed the importance of team building, which many of the service members displayed as they pulled together and pushed for the finish line. U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jason Brennon, 86th Security Forces Squadron Phoenix Raven, and his team took first place in the ruck. “I couldn’t have done it without any of these guys,” Brennon said, motioning to his teammates. “When I was going down, starting to cramp, they started pushing me and motivating me.” Brennon recounted that when his team found a fellow Raven behind them, they teamed up and pulled through together. “This is what the ruck is all about: leadership, pushing through, and being a team player,” Brennon said. U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Heath Tempel, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and 435th Air Expeditionary Wing command chief, spoke of Airey’s experiences. “Keep faith with your teammates,” Tempel said. Airey and his men also relied on teamwork to survive, Tempel said as he spoke of the testimony an indi-

vidual gave during the War Crimes Commission. “Chief Airey’s group of POWs was described as a domain of heroes,” Tempel said. “The stronger helped the weaker. Those fortunate enough to have a coat shared it with others. Sometimes the Germans provided farm wagons for those unable to walk, but with few horses available, the POWs themselves shouldered the burden, pulling the wagons through the snow.” Ramstein’s dedication to honoring the past and shaping the future continues to be evident through the men and women who give their time and energy to memorial events such as the Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Paul Airey Memorial Ruck/March/ Run and many others.

Proceeds from the ruck went to the Air Force Enlisted Village, whose core mission is to provide a safe, secure home for surviving spouses of retired enlisted U.S. Air Force Airmen.

BICYCLE SAFETY by Thomas Burns (USAF CMSGT Retired) Supervisory Logistics Management Specialist / Senior Logistics Management Specialist DoD Civilian, NATO Support and Procurement Agency Capellen, Luxembourg Now that the weather is warming up most of you bicyclists have probably already tuned up your bikes and are out on the bike trails … not without your helmet. It was late summer and the days were getting shorter as daylight was slowly yielding to darkness. I had had a long stressful day at work and wanted to squeeze in a quick bike ride before I ended my day. As I cruised along the bike path, I enjoyed the fresh air and the opportunity to reflect on the day’s events. It was getting late, so there was not much bike traffic along the trail. After approximately 35 minutes into my ride, I — unintentionally — left the paved area of the bike path and was now riding on a graveled area. As I was trying to maneuver my bike back on to the paved area, I lost control and was surprised to find myself on a collision course with the pavement. Seconds later I hit the pavement with a force that seemed to rattle every bone and internal organ in my body. I took a couple of deep breaths and attempted to get up. Broken and unable to get up, I realized I had sustained some serious injuries; after a few more seconds of dealing with the pain, I wondered, “What now?” As I glanced over to my left, I was pleased to see my cell phone on the ground next to me. Fortunately, I had made it a habit of always bringing it along. I called my wife, explained what had happened, and she was promptly on her way. As I lay there in pain, for what seemed an eternity, I glanced over to my right and noticed my safety helmet lying on the ground. Fortunately, I had made it a habit to ALWAYS wear my bicycle safety helmet when biking. I was thankful that it had protected my skull during my fall. Moments later I was con-

sumed by a great sense of relief as my wife arrived. Through some creative maneuvering and assistance from my wife, in spite of the severe pain, I managed to get into the car. During the drive to the hospital, it seemed that every bump and crevice in the road enhanced the pain. As I arrived at the emergency room and after checking my vitals, they wheeled me off for x-rays. After a series of unpleasant maneuvers in the x-ray room — rolls, bends, twists, turns, etc. — the doctor examined me and sent me back for additional x-rays and round two of this series of torture. Every twist and turn translated into severe pain. Afterward, I welcomed the dosage of painkiller the nurse injected into my IV tube to make the pain bearable. I was left wondering why she had not given me that dosage earlier. The doctor studied the x-rays and informed me of the damage: separated shoulder, dislocated thumb, two broken ribs, and some additional dents and stretches, but no head injuries! After a late night at the hospital, I was in early the next morning to see orthopedics where they reset some bones. Ouch! Conscious of my wife’s presence in the room, I tried to bear the pain. However, that was the first time my wife had witnessed me overcome by pain. After that, I was off to see the trauma surgeon who informed me that my injuries would not require surgery.

Page 13

Then he asked me the magic question, “Were you wearing your bicycle safety helmet?” My response was a proud, “Yes!” He explained that he had years of experience dealing with bicycle accidents and how, in spite of my bangedup condition, my injuries could have been a lot more severe had I not been wearing my safety helmet. The following statistics support his claim: • Head injuries represent one of the most serious and potentially lifethreatening injuries that can be sustained by bicyclists • Recent figures show that there are over 800 bicycle-related fatalities annually in the USA, and an additional 45,000 bicyclists are injured • Almost three-quarters of fatal crashes (74 percent) involved a head injury • Nearly all bicyclists who died (97 percent) were not wearing a helmet • Statistics show that in the event of a crash, wearing a bicycle helmet reduces the risk of head injury as much as 70+ percent

In spite of the proven benefits of wearing a safety helmet, studies reveal that only a small portion of riders actually wear safety helmets while bicycling. The most common reasons for not wearing a helmet are it’s uncomfortable, annoying, it’s too hot, don’t need it, don’t own one, messes up my hair, not cool, etc. After a couple of months, the doctor assured me I was OK. I was able to get back on the trail and enjoy bicycling again. I obviously had not planned to have an accident that day. As it was happening, I did not have time to pause and don my safety helmet; it all happened in a matter of seconds. I encourage EVERYONE to heed the warnings and wear your bicycle safety helmet while bicycling. It may not be the cool thing to do, but it is cooler than having a cracked skull, or even worse. In my case, I am convinced my bicycle safety helmet made a difference and may have even saved my life. So, the weather is getting nice. If you are a cyclist, it’s time to hit the bike trail — but not without your safety helmet. It only makes sense.

by Thomas Warner contributing writer Placing several athletes in the top three of numerous events and a consistent presence in the relays was the recipe for Ramstein to win the boys’ Division I title at the DODEA Track and Field championships. Ramstein wound up over 50 points ahead of second place Wiesbaden while Baumholder won the boys’ Division II-III crown. The Division I most valuable track and field athlete was Jose Serrano, a senior Royal runner who has excelled the past few seasons in distance events. Serrano got the most of his four-limit of events, winning first place in the 800 meters, 1,600 Jose Serrano meters, 3,200 Photo by Evan Willingham meters, and as an anchor leg on the 4 x 800 meter relay squad. Baumholder senior Nate Horton was similarly impressive as the MVP for Division II-III. “We broke the school 4 x 800 record and we just missed the DODEA record,” Serrano said after teaming with Nick Clinton, Nicholas Blake and Denver Dalpais to surpass second place Kaiserslautern and everyone else. “It was a great day for me and for the team.” This year’s Euros meet was also big for Kaiserslautern’s Jada Branch, who took wins in the 400 meters, long jump and triple jump. Branch went out as one of the best ever from DODEA schools and has accepted a scholarship to compete at Louisiana Tech. She will

go there following a summer trip to an all-star meet in Australia. “The season went fine and the Euros were everything I could have asked for,” said Branch. “It’s all a growing process and when Euros came around I was content with breaking my Kaiserslautern triple jump record and breaking the DODEA record in the 400 meters. I am proud of (Wiesbaden’s) Whitney (Bivins) for her win in the 200 meters and we both broke our personal best school records. There are always going to be people out there who can challenge you. Whether it’s Wiesbaden, Ramstein or some of the smaller schools … there’s a lot of great athletes here in Europe.” Ramstein boss William Buckley and his staff of nine assistants and volunteer coaches were well aware of the new DODEA scoring system, which awarded double points for relay wins and made it important to structure

relay teams in a way that allowed athletes to also be free for other events. “We had Jose run all four of the open distance events at a meet earlier this season, to sort of get a gauge if he could do it or if he even wanted to,” Buckley said. “We had a large group of seniors on the boys’ side and they came into the season sort of laid back. As the year went on we could see how tight of a group they really were.” Ramstein had five of the first six finishers in the 800, a race that went down to the wire and was a precursor to the relays near the end of the meet when 14 different athletes, mostly seniors, made up the four boys’ race quartets. Kaiserslautern was big in field events, with sophomore Austin Higby winning the shot put and taking second in the discus. On the girls’ side, Zhane Williams and Mercedes Durden won in the shot and discus, respectively. Caprinia Goode of Ramstein gave Williams a stiff challenge in the shot before finishing second. “I was proud of my throwers and jumpers this year. They put in countless hours in the weight room,” KHS coach Jason Steadman said. “Goals can only take you so far but hard work paved the way for these amazing kids. Jada was an inspiration to our team and we will be rooting for her as she takes the next step in her career.” Ramstein runners captured either first or second place in all four of the relays as coaches were able to spread the wealth and get multiple athletes involved in the meet. The 4x800 relay group missed breaking the DODEA record by just one second. “We had 26 seniors on our track and field roster so it was important for us to find ways to get more athletes opportunities to compete on both the girls’ and boys’ sides,” said Ramstein assis-

tant coach Kyle Cranston. “During the season we put different combinations together and made attempts to let some people focus on their individual events.” That strategy worked but the big guns for Ramstein also produced. Jaya Worthington was second in girls’ 100meter hurdles and CiCi Williams was a winner in the 300-meter hurdles. Both girls will be back next season and the graduating Serrano was brilliant in joining with his cross country champion buddies to earn this final success. “We were all there supporting each other and we had back-to-back cross country titles so we knew we could do well in distance races,” said Serrano, who plans to enroll at West Texas A&M University. The CiCi Williams 800 meter run Photo by Thomas Warner was a dominant Royal performance with Ramstein’s Serrano, Clinton, Dalpais, Robert Cullison, and Blake taking five of the top six spots. The quintet was bunched together and all finished within three seconds of one another. “We ran in packs all year at practices,” said Cullison, one of several RHS athletes who PCS’d here a year ago and got just one season at the school. “That’s how we trained and how we raced. We were all a pretty close-knit group and I am going to miss these guys I’ve become friends with.” Consistent junior Dash Rogers wound up second to Serrano in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs. The 3,200 featured a near photo-finish as the friends crossed together about

June 15, 2018 15 seconds ahead of Kaiserslautern’s Orlando Rojas in third place. Baumholder’s Nate Horton won the long jump and was third in the high jump as well as running relay legs, finalizing a senior year that included a DODEA basketball championship plus his track team’s top prize. His teammate Solo Turgeon was so close with Wiesbaden’s Garrett Armel in the 110 hurdles that judges ruled it was a dead-heat tie for first place. “Nate was the only four-year letterman we had this year,” said Baumholder coach Matthew Martinez. “He qualified for Euros all four years and he won the long jump in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Nate is a clutch performer and works out in the offseason by continuing to build his strength and endurance in the weight room.” Turgeon and Lorne Huxtable also

had giant seasons for the Buccaneers and will return to lead the BHS program next year. Turgeon was a top DODEA hurdler throughout meets all spring, but was edged in the Euros 300 meter hurdles by Caelum Wallace of Wiesbaden. Jackie Harris of Ramstein was third in both of those races and took fifth in the high jump to aid the Royals’ overall point total. “I worked this year as hard as possible and it was amazing to cut four seconds off my personal best time in the 300, but Solo and Caelum really pushed it in both races,” said Harris, who is headed to University of Texas-San Antonio. Harris also won with Nicholas Lowe, Gevaughn Bracy, and Dominique Arizpe on Ramstein’s 4x100 relay. The Lady Royals will lose just three seniors from their nucleus and will be

Page 17 stronger in 2019. Williams had a solid sophomore campaign and will be one of the top returning athletes at any overseas school next season. “I congratulated Jada at the meet and I will miss competing against her,” Williams said of KHS’s Branch. “My meet was positive all around but I was nervous heading into the 300 hurdles because I’d fallen the day before in the 100 (preliminaries) and didn’t qualify for the finals.” “Our coaches did a phenomenal job of preparing us and what we were able to do is mostly because of them,” said distance runner Blake, another Ramsteiner who arrived recently and had just one season with the program. “And I was training and competing all season with my brothers. I’ve never felt so motivated by a group around me as I did with this one.”

June 15-21 by FindItGuide.com If you have spent any time in Germany, you know that the Germans love their bottled water. You can’t go to a restaurant without being asked “mit oder ohne Kohlensaeure” (meaning with or without gas). Having water out of a bottle in Germany is like getting refills at a restaurant in the states. It is just standard protocol! Germany is the country with the highest number of bottled mineral water brands (908 bottled water labels). So why do the Germans pay for water out of a bottle when it is so costly? It must be because the ground water is not drinkable, right? Au contraire! Germany is generally known as a very “green” country, especially when it comes to disposing of waste in streams and rivers. Actually, Germany disposes of excess water resources from their water supply due to the abundance of rainfall and of good aqui-

In past decades much emphasis was dedicated to improving water quality. Protecting groundwater from harmful pollutants requires the allocation of protection

Is my German tap water drinkable? — continued from front page most strictly monitored livelihood in Germany. Another thing Germans are known for is being frugal

with their money. They have a “black belt” when it comes to managing their money and stretching their income is an art in this country. So if they are so frugal, why do they spend money on water when

they have perfectly good water right in their own house? One can attribute medicinal qualities to Sprudel (mineral water with gas), pointing to the presence of numerous little-known trace elements, which are missing in some sources of tap water. They are essential for humans because our bodies cannot produce them, so it is necessary to regularly get them from foods and water. The availability of minerals from food is less than mineral water, because in foods minerals are bound to complex molecules that can limit their absorbability, whereas in water they are present as free ions (which makes them easier to absorb). So although that tap water is clean and delicious, you might want to

think about adding in a bit of the German culture and ordering up a bottle of water next time you are at a restaurant. And if you look in your trunk and find cases of empty mineral water

(stay away from those plastic bottles that leach bad stuff in the water!) to be brought back to the store, you know you have been in Germany for a while! “Einmal Sprudel bitte!”

4 tips to avoid slips, trips & falls

June 15, 2018

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 65 percent of all fall injuries occurred as a result of falls on same-level walking surfaces in 2017. Slips, trips and falls also made up 20 percent of all work-related injuries and accounted for more than 12 percent of workers compensation expenses. Falls are expensive and cost the government and taxpayers approximately $40,000 per incident.

by Seth Dyer Installation Management Command Safety OfficeThe Occupational Safety and Health Administration reported 5,190 workers were killed on the job in 2016, and one of the leading causes of workrelated deaths was falls. The sad part is these tragic deaths were preventable. First of all, people need to move past the idea that, “this can’t happen to me.” Slips, trips and falls can happen anytime, anywhere. During National Safety Month, the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Safety Office offers helpful tips to keep your feet firmly on the ground at work or home.

coverings properly. You can also buy non-slip rug backings to keep them in place as well. 3. Grease and spills: Whether you work in a commercial kitchen or cook at home, spilled liquid and

greasy floors can create slipping hazards. Clean the area by using enough hot water and soap to lift spilled liquid or grease from the floor. Make sure you wear slipresistant footwear while cleaning

and keep others away from the area until you’re done. At work, cleaning up spilled fuel, grease, hydraulic fluid and other vehicle/aircraft fluids will prevent fall-related injuries in a maintenance shop or aircraft hangar. Drip pans only work to prevent the spill if they are cleaned up daily. Spill areas should be properly marked and cordoned off until it can be cleaned up. 4. Footwear: Whether you are at home or work, inside or outside, wear non-slip footwear when walking on slippery surfaces. At work, ensure slick surfaces are marked and people wear safety boots to enter industrial work sites. Many injuries are caused by people entering an industrial area wearing the wrong type of shoes instead of non-slip, industrial footwear. The best tip of all is to be proactive and think of ways to protect yourself, your family and co-workers by removing hazards before any incidents occur. Being proactive and following these simple tips will help you remain on your feet and injury free! For more information about slips, trips and fall prevention or National Safety Month, call the Kaiserslautern Safety Office at 541-2301 or 0611-143-5412301 or Baumholder Safety Office at 531-2748 or 0611-143-531-2748.

4 Easy Tips to Stay on Your Feet 1. Clean Up: Housekeeping is the key ingredient to keeping your home or workplace free of slips, trips and falls. At home, many parents know the pain of stepping on a toy in the dark. Get your family in the habit of picking up toys and items off the floor before going to bed to help prevent those type of injuries. At work, make your environment safer by moving trip hazards like electrical cords, work equipment and tools from walkways. 2. Floor Coverings: A large area rug with a crease or one that rolls up on the corners can cause tripping hazards. Create a flat surface by using double-sided rug tape to secure floor
