Dining facilities up for AF Hennessy Award Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 786th Force Support Squadron’s Rheinland Dining Facility, Lindberghof Dining Facility and the Jawbone Flight Kitchen were nominated to be inspected for the 61st annual Hennessy Trophy Awards program Feb. 21 on Ramstein. The nomination, in recognition of the outstanding work done at these three food service operations, is part of a program that promotes excellence in customer service and meal quality, inspires morale and improves management concepts and practices. The program is named after John Lawrence Hennessy, a man recognized by U.S. presidents as a leader in his field. Thought to be one of the nation’s most capable hotel and restaurant executives, Hennessy was appointed as chairman of the War Food Committee to develop food service systems capable of sustaining millions of military personnel involved in the war effort in 1943. A contingent of Army AH-64 Apache helicopters, delivered by two U.S. Air Force Air Mobility Command C-5M Galaxies, arrived today in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve. Operation Atlantic Resolve is a tangible demonstration of the United States’ commitment to main-

taining peace and stability in the region, while providing reassurance to NATO allies and regional partners. Through multinational training and exercises, OAR highlights the flexibility of U.S. ground and air forces to rapidly respond to contingencies alongside regional partners. The Apaches, from the 1st Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment, Ft. Bliss, Texas, arrived as part of the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade.

This is the first deployment of an aviation brigade in support of OAR under the Regionally Aligned Forces concept, an Army unit tailored to provide flexible, responsive and continuously available support worldwide. “This operation epitomizes the jointness of our military and how we work together,” said Army Brig. Gen. Phillip S. Jolly, deputy commanding general, Mobilization and Reserve Affairs director. “You

have the world’s greatest Air Force enabling the Army to do our mission, which is to assure security to our European allies and friends.” In total, 85 aircraft, including CH-47 Chinooks, UH-60 Black Hawks, AH-64 Apaches and MEDEVAC helicopters, as well as approximately 2,200 Soldiers, comprise the 10th CAB deployment throughout the European theater.

Maj. Gen. Timothy Zadalis, vice commander, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, noted the historic nature of the joint venture with this year marking the 70th anniversary of a U.S. Air Force presence in Europe. “This is a 70-year commitment we have had to Europe and our partner nations, and all of us see no change in that,” Zadalis said. “It’s a relationship built in trust, common values and our belief in freedom. The aircraft that is behind us and the helicopters they brought in is a demonstration to that commitment.” Zadalis added that there was also a significant training aspect to the U.S. Air Force and Army crews working together on the helicopter transport and delivery. The successful helicopter arrival, Zadalis said, “prove(s) the point that the United States Army and the United States Air Force is ready at a moment’s notice to deploy anywhere around the world. It’s where the Army needs them that the United States Air Force puts them.” U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Mobility Command directly support

the joint and multinational warfighting environment with air superiority, direct air operations, global air transportation and capabilities that are essential to supporting the warfighters on the ground. One of the largest aircraft in the world, and the largest lifter in the Air Force inventory, the AMC C-5M Galaxy provided the necessary capabilities required to bring the Apaches to Germany. Capable of carrying six Apache helicopters, two M1A Abrams tanks or 250,000 pounds of relief supplies, the Galaxy is uniquely equipped to carry bulky combat equipment and oversized cargo in a rapid global environment. “It’s a tremendous aircraft, and it’s crewed by the brightest and smartest young men and women our country has to offer,” Zadalis said. “The beautiful thing about the C-5M is that one day you could deliver combat airpower. … And the next day you could be delivering humanitarian airlift around the world. It’s part of what we do. It’s part of our commitment to Europe. It’s part of our commitment to NATO. And it’s part of our commitment to freedom.”

“It’s an honor to be nominated and have the chance to show what a great team we have here,” said Tech. Sgt. Joshua Alvarez, 786 FSS facility manager. In 2016, the 786 FSS demonstrated its versatility by supporting the ordered departure of all Department of Defense dependents from Turkey — about 750 — with less than 72 hours’ notice for preparation. Last year the squadron also supported more than 1,900 professional military education students and 1,200 Airmen stationed here. The Jawbone Flight Kitchen supported more than 4,000 sorties and 500 medical evacuation flights. Between the three facilities, more than 290,000 meals were served

February 24, 2017 locally throughout the year. The 786 FSS also hosted the Food Service Shift Leader Course this past fall, training 13 Airmen and preparing them to lead their peers while saving Air Force travel funds. This is the third year that the 786 FSS has been nominated for the Hennessy award. To be nominated for this prestigious award is a testament to how the 786 FSS’ kitchen operations and overall readiness is recognized as one of the best around, said Airman 1st Class Taylor Messer, 786 FSS food service apprentice. Results for the 61st annual Hennessy Trophy Awards program are expected to be announced in April. For more, see photos on Page 10.

18th CMSAF: Airman behind the stripes by Staff Sgt. Hailey Haux Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Command Information A business card sits in the depths of a wallet. Sitting on the couch, the owner contemplates his next step in life, the billfold falls onto the floor and the card is strewn across the ground along with the other contents. The 18-year-old picks it up, studies the words ‘Air Force recruiter’ and makes a phone call. “It was fate. Two months later I was in basic training,” said the new Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright. Growing up with five other siblings, Wright said he had a very loving home. However, living in poor neighborhoods and moving from place to place presented trials. In his own words, they were, ‘humble beginnings.’ “Personal resilience is important to deal with the ills of life, period,” Wright stated. “We all have to ensure that we become as resilient as we can.” Like many others, Wright went to basic training without a secure job and was unsure what was in store for his future. When he found out he was selected as a dental assistant, the Columbus, Georgia, native wasn’t exactly sure what it meant, confessing he had been to the dentist maybe once in his life up to that point. During his first enlistment, he claimed to be undisciplined, less well-rounded, and not the typical model Airman. That changed with the help of a mentor who pointed him in the right direction. Wright, a smile lining his face glanced at the ceiling as if returning to a point in time said, “At about my three-anda-half-year mark, my mentor (retired Master Sgt.) Joseph Winbush had me join the base honor guard and that was the turning point.” Performing his duties at a military funeral, he was assigned to present the American flag to the deceased’s family for the first time. That moment, locked in his memory forever, he said with conviction, “That’s when I decided I wanted to become a chief.”

As a child, Wright, now a jazz music enthusiast and avid golfer, loved to play checkers because he loved the strategy of moving the pieces around the black and red board in an attempt to beat one of his siblings, a rare occurrence he found to be challenging. “When I find something challenging, it inspires me to go after it and get good at it,” Wright said. “Life is tough, but I think it’s supposed to be tough. It’s how you learn and grow and get better.” Believing multitasking was the key to success and balance, he found it’s actually best for him to communicate and be present in his surroundings. As he progressed through the ranks, held multiple positions throughout the service, and grew as a person, the father of three still looks at challenges the same way. “When I am home, I try to be home and engaged in the moment with my family,” Wright said. “Same thing when I am at work. I have learned that whatever I am doing, just be in the moment. Communication with my wife and making sure I understand her desires with respect to how much she wants to be involved in work, are major factors to my success as well.” Being a senior leader, the chief said there are times when you have to decide what you are most passionate about. Wright said his passion is motivating, encouraging and inspiring people. He enjoys helping people achieve their goals and discover their dreams. “I am here to serve the Airmen and hopefully on a broad scale, or even on an individual scale, help people achieve their goals,” Wright said. “Sometimes that’s providing advice, mentorship and guidance; sometimes it’s providing resources, removing barriers, giving them the right perspective, or creating opportunities.” As the 17th Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James A. Cody retires, Wright said he is humbled and blessed for the opportunity to be able to serve at the highest level, saying it gives him a chance to help even more Airmen. In order to help more people

achieve their goals, Wright said it would make things easier if he were able to teleport to maximize his time and spend it doing the things he is passionate about. Unfortunately for the chief, we aren’t quite there. “Life is short so you have to enjoy it while you can,” said Wright with a grin. “Smiling and laughing is good for the soul. I am an eternally optimistic person and coming from humble beginnings to me, every day is a good day.” Having dabbled in poetry and writing roughly 30 poems, Wright is no stranger to expressing himself and his thoughts, and when asked about giving advice to Airmen he knew exactly what he wanted to say. “Wake up every day, work hard, stay humble and repeat. That’s a good philosophy to live by,” Wright said. “Being an Airman and being in the military is tough under some of the circumstances we have now and I think it will only get tougher; but I am asking them to trust in me and to trust in their leadership. We are doing everything we can to make life easier for them to help them

Chief Master Sgt. Wright

be successful. And read, read, read! Leaders are readers.” From humble beginnings to the spotlight, Wright stands, shoulders rolled back, a sense of pride in his chest as he accepts the duties and responsibilities of the highest enlisted

Airman. For his next journey, he will not measure success on how many meetings he attends, or the policies he affects; his success will be measured by the number of Airmen he has helped achieve their goals while under his watch.

The 86th Communications Squadron maintains multiple Giant Voice mass notification towers on Ramstein, Vogelweh, Kapaun and Einsiedlerhof. In order to ensure the reliable operation of these towers for actual emergency notifications, 86 CS is increasing the frequency of maintenance testing. Effective immediately, additional broadcasts will occur on Tuesdays between 9 and 11 a.m. During this time, technicians will test individual towers located on the Air Force installations within the KMC. Personnel on Ramstein, Vogelweh, Kapaun and Einsiedlerhof may hear a short duration warning tone and verbal test message lasting 5 to 10 seconds each during this maintenance window. The 86th Airlift Wing Command Post will continue their weekly test each Wednesday at noon, and retreat/national anthems will continue to play from selected towers at 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Exercise patience. Many accidents are caused by impatient drivers who are rushing to get from point A to point B. While time is certainly a valid consideration when traveling, safety is even more important. After all, if you are involved in an accident, you’ll certainly experience more of a challenge arriving at your destination on time than if you simply exhibit patience while driving.

Back to business: Guidelines for starting private businesses by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Starting a business and maintaining rules and regulations that come with a home-based business is hard work. For those looking to start a home-based business in base housing on Ramstein, there are guidelines to keep in mind. Regardless of where a business is located, on or off a U.S. military installation, the German law still applies. The German law must still be abided by, even if the business services exclusively U.S. residents or base ID cardholders. “There are quite a few rules as we fall under German law,” said Greg Fobell, 86th Mission Support Group

plans and programs director. “You can’t just start a home-based business without filing proper documents with the German government, as well as requesting permission from base housing and your commander.” Moving to a new country involves respecting its basic customs and courtesies. It is illegal to use any military privileges for a private business. Privileges include using an APO address to ship merchandise or a United States Army Europe plated car to transport or pick-up sales. Aspiring entrepreneurs must register their business with the local German trade office, pay a registration fee and receive permission from the installation commander. After registering, a German tax identification number is given. Recipients must

file German taxes whether the business is active or not. Additionally, businesses must comply with the Air Force Instruction and cannot conflict with what the Army & Air Force Exchange Service is selling. Depending on the nature of the business, it may require regular inspections to stay in compliance with health standards. The local German trade office will inform members of any necessary permits needed. “I recommend that the business is set up properly and carefully,” Fobell said. “Failure to comply could result in loss of privileges.” Furthermore, any active-duty military personnel wishing to engage in off-duty employment must receive approval from their commander first.

For more information on limitations, solicitation, and liability for commercial activities from family housing, reference Chapter 16 of Air Force Instruction 32-6001. “Whatever your business may be, it’s important that it complies with the procedures and policies here,” said Diana Keener, 86th Civil Engineering Squadron KMC housing deputy director. “Members should be aware that there are special considerations and requirements prior to applying for registration.” For more information, contact the Vogelweh Housing Office at 314-489-6643/6671 or 011-49-631536-6643/6671, or the 86th Airlift Wing Ramstein Law Center at 480-1040 and German Legal Assistance at 480-2552.

Connections, camaraderie at Ramstein’s SpouseFit

KMC spouses interact during the 86th Airlift Wing's SpouseFit event Feb. 23 at the Ramstein Officers' Club. The two-day event featured various activities.

by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing hosted its first-ever SpouseFit event this week at the Ramstein Officers’ Club, boosting the morale of military spouses by offering a fit, fun and fabulous opportunity to build connections and to stay resilient. The event veered away from the usual “death by PowerPoint” presentations, offering more hands-on activities, said Kristin Moore, spouse of 86 AW commander Brig. Gen. Richard G. Moore Jr. “So often we go into a classroom

setting, and we leave knowing the same three or four people we knew when we walked in,” Moore said. “Our goal with SpouseFit is to get people up and moving around — meeting new people and finding out about new organizations to volunteer with. “It’s exciting because we have people from every base organization,” Moore added. “Besides Air Force spouses, we have Army spouses and spouses of contractors and civilian employees.” Activities included hands-on fitness activities, to include self-defense and yoga. Other activities included nutrition, lessons geared to build resilience

and an active volunteer fair. The two-day program ended with a fashion show featuring common styles of dress — business casual, semi-formal and formal. “Our focus was on fun,” said Jan Devitt, 86 AW installation community support organizer. “We wanted everybody to come out and have fun, to build connections with each other and for everyone to know they are valued and that we are all in this together.” Moore said it is important for military spouses to connect with one another, especially overseas, explaining that social networking opens up opportunities that will grow long after any given event. The bonds are also

very useful in helping spouses stay strong in challenging times, she said. “People sometimes feel isolated when they get overseas,” Moore said. “They could be nervous about going out; they’re nervous about traveling and the language barrier. If you have a friend you can venture out with and go to these places with, you’re more likely to do it. Getting together on base with people who are in the same boat as you can be empowering.” While SpouseFit is only for two days, the friendships and bonds formed can last a lifetime. Organizers said to stay tuned for information about the next event, tentatively scheduled for the fall time frame.

Fluoride: Protects teeth for life by Senior Airman Benjamin Martinez 86th Dental Squadron

There is more to keeping teeth healthy than daily brushing and flossing. The American Dental Association recommends using a soft-bristle tooth brush and floss to keep our teeth clean along with another great aid, fluoride, to help protect our teeth. Our daily consumption of carbohydrates and sugars is food for bacteria, or sugar bugs, which produce a byproduct of acids that can harm and damage teeth. This is where fluoride comes into play. It helps protect teeth from those acids by strengthening the outer tooth structure. Fluoride can help reverse early signs of cavities and is actually all natural. Fluoride is derived from the natural occurring element, Fluorine. Fluorine is an abundant element in the earth’s crust, which is mixed with minerals in rocks and soils. As water passes by those rocks and soils, fluoride is dissolved into the water. This results in small amounts of fluoride present in water sources around the world.

There are two ways that fluoride helps teeth: topically and systemically. Topically, fluoride strengthens teeth already present in the mouth. Topical fluoride provides local protec-

tion and can also be incorporated in saliva. Topical fluoride can be found in most common dental products, such as toothpaste, mouthwash and even some floss. Systemically, fluoride is ingested

into the body and then released to the developing teeth. It is deposited throughout the entire tooth, essentially strengthening the tooth from the inside out. Therefore, it is imperative for kids to be exposed to water with fluoride. Water on Ramstein and Landstuhl has fluoride and the water on Vogelweh and off base does not. If you or your children are not regularly drinking water with fluoride, you may purchase water with the optimal amount of fluoride at both the commissary and the Exchange. Most of the brands with fluoride have a red top, but be sure to read the label to make sure you are getting water with fluoride. Fluoride is an amazing aid to help keep you and your family’s teeth strong for a lifetime. During the month of February, the 86th Dental Squadron celebrated “National Children’s Dental Health Month” and visited Ramstein elementary, intermediate and middle schools to talk with your children about their dental health. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment for your child, call the Ramstein Dental Clinic at 479-2210 or 06371-46-2210.

In debt, grateful to US Air Force Story and photo by Senior Airman Jonathan Bass 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

On what should have been one of the happiest days of our lives, my wife and I were scalped of our happiness. And our resiliency was tested. January 17, was an amazing day for us. Our daughter Alice was born. She was a fighter from the start. Alice tried her absolute best to stay in the womb; and when the doctor removed her from her warm home, Alice let them know she wasn’t happy. Angry, loud cries echoed off the walls of the small operating room. She inherited her mother’s temper. Cue heart beats and a crescendo of rousing music. Even covered in baby goop, she was beautiful. We were overjoyed to see and interact with our daughter. She was perfect, or so we thought. Less than 48 hours later, we noticed something might be wrong. Alice started coughing up green fluid, and then stopped breathing. I yelled for a nurse and a whole team ran to our aid. Alice’s breathing was restored, but our concern wasn’t alleviated. A few hours later, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit doctor came to assist Alice with a bowel movement. Even after a suppository, Alice hadn’t passed any meconium or stool. Alice was taken to the NICU for further examination and testing. Hoping that nothing was wrong, we followed. My emotions got the better of me as I watched them poke and prod at my brand new baby girl. I cried as Alice cried. The paternal love I’ve heard described so often set in. I prayed this was just a bad dream. Spiritual resilience is a strong suit of mine. My religious beliefs get me through even just everyday life, so I knew I could count on my God to pull us through. Unfortunately it wasn’t just a bad dream. I personally believed in my heart of hearts this was a trial. My belief is that God would use this for his glory, but fear still loomed over us. I knew he didn’t do this. But I still cried over intrusive and unreasonable thoughts that we were being punished in some way. Alice had a blockage in her intestines and there was a possible perforated bowel. She needed to be ambulanced to a hospital in Kaiserslautern for immediate surgery. Cue jaw drop, flat line tone,

Caitlyn Bass, wife of Senior Airman Jonathan Bass, 86th Airlift Wing photojournalist, smiles at her daughter, Alice Jane Bass, Jan. 24 at Westpfalz-Klinikum in Kaiserslautern. Alice spent the first three weeks of her life in the hospital after abdominal surgery.

anvil falling from the sky. We were floored, to say the absolute least. I couldn’t get a hold of my supervisor or my superintendent since it was 2 a.m., so I called my chief. She rushed out to be with me while I waited for Alice’s surgery. My wife couldn’t be discharged from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center yet because of her cesarean section wound. It was on me to travel with Alice in the German ambulance. Mental resilience is a more difficult domain to master. I think it’s because it’s something intangible. It’s all about how you feel and during that ambulance ride, I felt miserable. Fearful thoughts about my daughter’s health, her future, even my life crashed into my head. I was barely coherent due to the emotional and mental turmoil battling inside me. I knew I had to be there for my little girl. Mustering all of my mental faculties, I summoned the courage to brave out that first early morning. At the hospital, I waited while a convention of doctors came into her room repeatedly to discuss her case in German and then tell me we were waiting on more tests or the specialist who was on their way. My heart soared every time they came in, and deflated every time they said we had to wait. I slept about three hours in three days throughout the process. I know it’s not a long period to go with that little sleep, nor was it especially grueling or tasking, but the mental and emotional stress of that time was more demanding than zero week in BMT, and I cried more between Jan.

19-21, than I have in the previous four years. Every whimper or stir from Alice jolted me out of whatever rest I was attempting to get in a panic that something else was happening. This was where physical resilience, my least favorite and weakest domain, was needed. My wife and I would get whatever rest we could get on the couches in the parent’s waiting room, but the biggest help was actually going home at night to sleep in our own bed. Rest and recovery is a major portion of physical resilience, if we weren’t rested, we wouldn’t have been able to make crucial decisions for Alice’s care. Terror doesn’t begin to express how I felt. Anguish is only the tip of the iceberg. What we went through during those first few days I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Infants are normally helpless, Alice was beyond helpless. She would look up at me and I could see in her eyes that she was hurting, but I was helpless to help her. Thank God Alice’s surgery went well. She had two obstructions in her Ileum, which connects the small and large intestines. There was no bowel perforation, much to our relief. Part of her Ileum was removed, as well as her appendix, and she was given a stoma. Essentially they brought part of her intestines to the surface, to pass stool through a bag attached to her stomach. She’ll have a reversal surgery to close the stoma soon. After abdominal surgery, patients aren’t allowed to eat in case something went wrong during the operation. This is easy to understand and deal with as an adult, but for an infant, who literally just started eat-

ing, it has to be miserable. Alice was receiving intravenous nutrition, so she was getting food, but not full. There isn’t much worse than looking at your newborn and not being able to feed her. I don’t mean as a man and not being equipped to feed them, but as a parent, not being allowed to feed them. We just knew Alice was incredibly hungry, but we couldn’t do a thing about it. Alice didn’t actually drink milk for three or four days. And when we could give her milk again, it was only a fraction of what she needed. Our journey didn’t end after the surgery, however. A few days later, Alice developed a blood clot in her right leg. Her tiny veins couldn’t support the central IV line which was delivering her medicine and her nutrition. The doctors tried every vein they could think of, including one on her head, but none would hold the line. Just when we thought we were through the tunnel, the darkness reared back its ugly head. Blood clots are incredibly dangerous, particularly to an infant. Here is where social resilience stepped into the ring to help. My wife’s sister drove out from Grafenwohr, my mother flew from North Carolina, friends took care of our dog, brought us meals, and even just sat and let us talk about the whole fiasco. But Alice is a fighter, she has been since the moment she was born. She took the surgery, the blood clot, the needles and tubes, and the restricted nutrition for several days like a champ! She spent more time in a hospital in one month than I have in nearly 28 years. We really didn’t feel like parents during the hospital stay. It felt like we were only part-time parenting. We’d wake up at home, eat breakfast on the way to the hospital, spend as much time with Alice during the day as we could, and then go home at night. It was heart wrenching to walk by her room and see it empty. The bassinet where she should be sleeping was barren. But our resilience helped us survive. We weren’t living during this time. We were in survival mode. We went chow to chow, day to day, and after three seemingly unending weeks, Alice was allowed to come home. And I’ve realized, because of all this, and the fact that we didn’t have any medical bills because of it, I pretty much owe the Air Force my life. I will forever be in debt and grateful to the Air Force for saving my daughter’s life.

The annual celebration included a cooperative effort from Kaiserslautern’s middle and high school students, civilian volunteers and 21st Special Troops Battalion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, personnel assigned in the area. Among the attendees, special guests included Command Sgt. Maj. Alberto Delgado and Col. William Galbraith, deputy commanding officer, both with 21st TSC, as well as Lt. Col. Caprissa Brown-Slade, commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Anthony Williams, with the 21st STB. During the ceremony, Kaiserslautern Middle School eighth-grader Serenity Slade shared what Black History Month means to her through a presentation entitled “Faces of Slavery,” where she discussed famous slaves and abolitionists. “Black History Month means recognizing all of the people that have sacrificed their lives for freedom,” Slade expressed. Sgt. Asi Dzietror, unit supply specialist, 21st TSC, who was the guest speaker at the event, shared her story of tenacity as she discussed her journey

from a young child living in Africa to becoming an NCO in the United States Army this Spring. “We all want to progress in our lives, in our careers, in our families, in our society,” Dzietror said. “What we often fail to see is that without our problems and challenges, progress is impossible. So I will define progress as defining problems and overcoming challenges.” Following Dzietror’s moving personal testimony, Kaiserslautern High

School students took center stage with an interactive museum presentation of historically famous African Americans ranging from poet and author Maya Angelou to former United States first family Barack and Michelle Obama. The presentation wrapped up with a motivation gospel praise dance performed by Staff Sgt. Willie Cook, human resource NCO in charge, 21st STB. As a part of the events decor, the

STB team featured photos of African Americans who also made military history, such as the Tuskegee Airmen and the first female reserve officer, Maj. Gen. RHS earns Green Boot certification Story and photo by Mary Ann Davis Installation Management Command

Active energy conservation plus a smaller ecological footprint equaled a Green Boot certification for Ramstein High School from the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Feb. 15. Col. Keith E. Igyarto, USAG RP commander, presented the Green Boot certificate to RHS Principal Sharon O’Donnell, who accepted the award on behalf of her 1,010 students and faculty that made RHS the first high school in Europe to receive the certification. “I’m proud to say that Ramstein High School is a member of the Green Boot community here in the Kaiserslautern Military Community,” Igyarto said. “There is a Native American saying, ‘We don’t own the land; we borrow it for our children.’ You as our children are setting the standard for this program, so with that, I congratulate the administrators, staff, faculty and, most of all, the students for being actively committed to this energy conservation program.” Also there to praise the school’s efforts was Col. Curtis Juell, 86th Mission Support Group commander. “I would like to congratulate you for the phenomenal things you’ve done with this program,” Juell said. The commander also commented about how the RHS Environmental Club started its conservation efforts off small, “like the grain of sand inside an oyster, creating a pearl that we need to expand upon in this high school and other schools within the KMC. I encourage you to continue these practices and pass along to your parents, siblings and friends the importance of preserving our planet’s critical resources,” he said. The Green Boot Program began in 2013 in Wiesbaden to inspire organizations to conserve energy and natural resources. The program has several conservation focus areas, to include heating, ventilation and air conditioning, awareness, waste management, transportation and water efficiency and quality. These categories help organizations diminish their ecological footprint while saving money and the environment, the garrison commander said. “I’m so excited and proud of our students and staff who helped with this effort by increasing awareness and decreasing our environmental footprint,” O’Donnell said. “This program was possible due to the leadership of Glenn Porter, our Green Boot program manager. He was the driving force behind this endeavor.”

Col. Keith Igyarto, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander (center right), and Konstantin Gross, USAG RP Environmental engineer (far right), present a Green Boot certificate to Sharon O'Donnell, Ramstein High School principal (center); Lauren Jones, RHS Environmental Club president (center left); and Glenn Porter, RHS physical education teacher and Green Boot Program manager, Feb. 15 at RHS. The school chose energy reduction and awareness as its primary focus areas and reduced energy consumption by 0.89 percent, equaling thousands of dollars of savings due to the conscientious use of energy in the 136,805-square-foot school facility.

RHS enrolled in the program in October 2015 and chose energy reduction and awareness as its primary focus areas, said Porter, a RHS physical education teacher who inspired students to become environmentally minded and even initiated the school’s environmental club. “We knew this would be a great program to start here at RHS because we could get everyone in the school involved,” Porter explained. “We replaced standard light bulbs with LED bulbs for lower energy consumption and longer usage. Photocopiers and printers with energy-saving modes were programmed to shut down after 15 minutes of inactivity. Computer monitors were turned off daily after school and before weekends.” Additionally, radiators were adjusted to moderate heat settings of “3” instead of maximum “5” settings. Classrooms were lit with natural sunlight whenever possible, and a campaign to remind staff and faculty to turn off equipment and lights when not in use helped bring energy usage down, Porter said. In one year, the school reduced energy consumption by 0.89 percent, equaling thousands of dollars of savings due to the conscientious use of energy in the 136,805-square-foot school facility. “We are so proud of our staff and students and impressed that they would take on the challenge and make these new habits part of their normal day. Both teachers and students are showing that we have an important

part to play in conserving energy. We started small, but we made big steps in this program, we will keep it going,” Porter said. Although the school started small the first year, it will add more environmental projects next year, Porter said. With both staff and student involvement, the eco attitude may spread to students’ families and others within the local communities. It’s not just about saving money but understanding how each person in an organization can contribute to protecting resources, said Konstantin Gross, an environmental engineer with the USAG RP Directorate of Public Works Environmental office. “Schools are the best places to run this type of program because it teaches the students the right things to focus on when it comes to the environment,” Gross said. “All actions performed by the students and staff affect their environment, making the program more visible and memorable.” The Green Boot program falls in line with Presidential Executive Order 13514, establishing “an integrated strategy towards sustainability in the federal government and to make reduction of greenhouse gas emissions a priority for Federal agencies,” and also Executive Order 13423, “strengthening federal environmental, energy and transportation management.” Becoming a member of the Green Boot community can be done in six steps, Gross said. First, units should contact the

USAG RP Directorate of Public Works Environmental Division to schedule an initial briefing. Next, units send their organizational chart to the Environmental Division for review. Then units will use Green Boot Program checklists to assess unit compliance with the standards. Later, when units complete their checklists, they contact the Environmental Division so they can conduct on-site checklist verification. Lastly, if the onsite verification is successful, the organization becomes a certified member of the USAG RP Green Boot program. The initial certificate is good for one year. After the initial period, it can be extended on a yearly basis by executing a recertification process. Besides the obvious environmental benefits, other advantages of the program are recognition in the program and use of the logo on promotional materials. The Green Boot Assessment will be bundled with the annual Environmental Performance Assessment, which saves time and manpower. “Unit participation raises ecological awareness, while wrapping together their environmental-related actions and processes to make annual program recertification easier,” Gross said. “The depth (of how much they want to do) can be decided by the organization itself.” To learn more about the Green Boot Program, call the USAG RP DPW Environmental office at 493-4744 or 0631-3406-4744.

Story and photos by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A flea market of a special kind takes place March 3 to 5 in the event hall of the Kaiserslautern Gartenschau. It’s the annual Pfennig Bazaar sponsored by the GermanAmerican and International Women’s Club Kaiserslautern. The Pfennig Bazaar is known as the biggest flea market in the West Palatinate. Its name originated from the former German currency, which was Deutsch Mark and Pfennigs, today euro and cents. The club, established in 1956, says its Pfennig Bazaar is the biggest fundraising event. All profits will be donated to various German, American and international charities, German-American youth activities and student exchange programs. “Last year our club donated a total of almost â‚Ź30,000 to institutions such as the United Service Organizations and the Airman’s Attic,â€? said Christine Schneider, the German club president. “Momentarily we are looking for some more American organizations that are in need of a monetary donation this year. They can contact me at president@gaiwc.com.â€? The GAIWC is promoting tolerance within cultures and international understanding and fosters friendship between German, American and other communities. The club offers a variety of interest groups, to include foreign languages, literature, international cooking, reading lessons and handicrafts, and it organizes evening events, concerts, trips and monthly get-togethers. Club members also get involved in community activities. They take care of the kindergraves at Kaiserslautern’s main cemetery and support the Fisher House at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

For the Pfennig Bazaar, the club is still accepting donations such as clean clothes for men, women and children, household goods, books, toys, small electrical appliances, collectibles, bed linens and music media. Furniture will not be accepted. Donations can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the event hall. “For the actual bazaar days, we hope to also receive American cake donations. Fasching reaches peak, parade leads through Ramstein Tuesday by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Fasching, Germany’s “crazy season” continues through Tuesday with masquerade balls, dances, children’s parties and comedic performances. A special Fasching highlight are the Rose Monday parades. The most famous ones are those leading through the main Fasching cities of Mainz, Köln and Düsseldorf. Spectators from Germany and throughout Europe come to these cities to watch the annual spectacle with decorated floats, bands, dancing and marching groups. Participants in vehicles throw out candy or hand out drinks to the crowds along the streets. It is traditional for revelers to sing, sway and dance during the five-hour parades which all start at 11:11 a.m. The official Fasching greeting in Köln is “Alaaf,” and in Mainz and Düsseldorf, it’s “Helau.” Kaiserslautern will have no parade, but a Rose Monday party starting at 11:11 a.m. in the center of town on Schillerplatz. The day is called Rose Monday because the organization committee of the Köln parade, which was founded in 1824, had its general membership meetings on Monday after the so-called Rose Sunday, also known as midlent Sunday or Laetare Sunday. Originally this day was the third Sunday before Easter. Since the eleventh century, the

In order not to compete with the big Rose Monday parades, Ramstein-Miesenbach has its parade Shrove Tuesday. The official Fasching shout is “Ralau.” “Our parade with more than 1,1000 participants consisting of 12 carnival associations and more than 21 floats and 40 walking groups will start at 2 p.m. on August-SuessdorfStrasse and lead through the town,” said Hartmut Schaeffner, chief of the parade committee. “Also, 9 music bands including the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Dixie Band will walk in the parade, that will be about 2 hours long.” More than 50,000 promoting items to include candies will be tossed to spectators along the 2.4 km route. Food and beverage booths will be set up. To be able to finance each year’s parade, vendors will be out in the streets selling parade buttons for €2 to spectators. These buttons grant free admission to the Fasching party, which takes place after the parade at the Haus des Buergers. “Our Fasching Princess Sara I and the Ramstein Carnival Association will invite everybody to have a good time,” Schaeffner said. “We are asking parents to watch their children and for safety reasons, spectators should not get too close to the floats.” Tuesday, the center of Ramstein-Miesenbach and Bahnhofstrasse will be closed

For the Tibetan Mastiffs living on Snow Mountain, a dog’s life has a simple riff: Guard a peaceful village of wool-making sheep from the thuggish wolf Linnux and his rabid pack. To avoid distractions, Mastiff leader Khampa forbids all music from the mountain. But when Khampa’s son Bodi discovers a radio dropped by a passing airplane, it takes just a few guitar licks for his fate to be sealed: Bodi wants to be a rock ‘n’ roll star. http://militaryingermany.com/understanding-fasching-carnival-germany Fasching is a traditional German celebration – also known as Karneval or Fastnacht. It is carnival season, which has been celebrated for centuries by people worldwide who have German heritage. It’s utterly bonkers and terrific fun – get involved! Fasching can be documented back to pre-Roman times. These times were entirely difficult for the average person and so the carnival season was a chance to be free, enjoy life and have some fun in a world where fun was nonexistent for many. The masks and costumes of today date back to the medieval times when they were not in place as fun decorations but as ways to avoid punishment and persecution as carnival goers would mock the strict rulers of the day, had they not used masks to disguise themselves they would have been caught and death would have been an inevitability. Fasching is celebrated in all German speaking countries and it’s timing in the year is poignant as it is just before the fasting season of Lent, which is when many people will forsake food as a sacrifice for religious reasons. Fasching allows a person to have a huge celebration, indulge, enjoy and embrace all that is good before things are out of bounds during Lent. Germany is the country which holds the largest and most vibrant carnivals to celebrate the

Fasching season with every city having its own celebrations. The city of Cologne (Köln) probably holds one of the biggest carnival celebrations in the country. Many places of work see this time as a public holiday, though it is not yet officially recognized as one. This means to have the time off, your boss needs to be a fan!

Fastnachtdienstag The celebrations come to an end on Ash Wednesday but prior to this is the much sought after Shrove Tuesday or Fastnachtdienstag in German. This is where you get to don your finery and attend many costume balls that are held all over Germany.

Altweiber Fastnacht The Fasching celebrations begin with the ‘Woman’s Carnival’ which happens on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, also known as Altweiber Fastnacht. This is a day when women can express their freedom and have a lot of fun! Ladies are encouraged to cut the ties of men and also place kisses on a man of their fancy, it is a flirty, fun and much looked forward to event – from both genders!

Costumes Fasching is very much a time where everyone, and especially children, like to dress up in fancy dress to take part in the fun. You will notice all the German department stores around you will start promoting their fancy dress costumes ready for the parties and parades of fasching.

Rosenmontag Rosenmontag or Rose Monday is what comes next; this is a major highlight with many dancers, marching bands, float parades and the streets filled with entertainment for all. These days the masks mentioned are more extravagant and more modern with the faces of politicians and prolific figures caricaturized upon them. Look out for masks and edifices of German leader, Angela Merkel!

Narrenrufe Narrenrufe is the collective name of the various Carnival greetings that people call out to each other in the street during carnival season. Each city/ region tends to have its own so it’s good to learn your local Narrenruf so you can join in the fun! Normally people call “Helau!” In Ramstein, people call “Ralau,” in Kaiserslautern it is “Kalau.”

A friend of mine told me about a super cool tour she took back in fall, so I decided to check it out and share it with you all. Have you heard about the Copper Mine of Fischbach? In German, it is the Kupferbergwerk Fischbach.

http://militaryingermany.com/fischbachs-copper-mine It is in the village of Fischbach and is less than a one-hour drive from the Kaiserslautern area. I was fully prepared to arrive, do a quick tour and take some pictures. What I did not know was that a wonderfully energetic gentleman named Nicolai Bollenbach, “Nico,” would be so excited to have an American writing about his copper mines that he would take me and my guests on a very detailed 1 ½ hour tour! Nico is the Betriebsleiter or manager of the mines and he loves to practice his English. We had a lot of fun with him!

ertheless, the walk was easy enough and we arrived at the mine entrance where we were told that we would be required to wear hard hats. Wait, what? Oh, only for safety in case of falling rocks. I felt so much better. He reassured us that no one has been injured from falling rocks. Cool, let’s go mining!

What to Expect The tour is normally about one hour long. Starting in mid-February and ending in midNovember, they open daily at 10 a.m. We decided to get there just in time for the first tour. We paid 14 euros for three adults, but he actually gave us the one adult with two children rate. I have no idea why, but we were not going to argue! Our tour started with a quick hike of about 400 meters UPHILL. This might be a good time to recommend that you wear comfy walking shoes. I did not. Nev-

Unexpected Fun and More I can’t even begin to describe this day. We had so much fun, which was a bit unexpected. I know I should be more open to these experiences, but I have just never had an interest in copper mines. Well, that was until I met Nico. I will give you a brief list of the things we learned, because I do not want to spoil the surprises for you. Let’s just say that I now know more about the French Revolution and the 30 Year War along with stalactites (tapering structure hanging like an icicle from the roof of a cave); how to prospect a mine; why mineworkers actually did look like Snow White’s Seven Dwarfs; and what a twelve-hour day in the life of a mineworker was like. Did you know that if a mineworker shows up late for work two times

IN HIS LIFETIME, he could be put to death? Yea, me neither. I also did not know that miners believed in ghosts and fairy dust. We saw both. As you can imagine, the mine is damp and cold inside. However, it is very well lit and we did get to see a lot of fun stuff. Things like Malachite and Azurite, which are apparently signs that let the miners know copper ore is below. We even got to see and touch a “baby gemstone” that was being formed. A blue-green color seemed out of place among the plain rocks, but it was breathtakingly beautiful. We were encouraged to touch it – then he told us it would be worth about 15,000 Euros if they mined it. YIKES! General Information The mine is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the last tour starting around 4:15 p.m. Prices are 6.50 Euros for adults and 4 Euros for children ages 5-16. They also have family and group rates available. The telephone number is +49 (0) 678 5 7 9103. The address is Hosenbachstrasse 17, Fischbach 55743. Happy Mining! If you run into Nico, please tell him “Gluck Auf!” from me. CHEERS… How to Get There Fischbach is under one hour northwest of Kaiserslautern. Author’s Profile: Cheryl Koller is a native of Georgia.
