Kisling NCOA partners with Botswana air arm by Tech. Sgt. Rachel Waller U.S. Air Forces in Europe & Air Forces Africa Public Affairs When Airmen hear of an enlisted professional military education school, they typically think of an Air Forceonly school with a narrow mission scope. However, according to the Kisling Noncommissioned Officer Academy’s website, the mission is not only “to prepare junior enlisted leaders to be adaptable for current and future leadership and management challenges in order to operate critically in complex and ambiguous environments,” but to bring their curriculum to joint and combined environments. LRMC staff targets to improve relationships, patient care with Ukrainian counterparts Story and photo by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Rehabilitation specialists from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center recently participated in a joint medical training exercise with their counterparts in the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence at a military hospital in Lviv, Ukraine, in efforts to build key relationships and increase levels of interoperability. The exercise, part of the Military Health System’s Global Health Engagement initiative, allowed for the

sharing of interdisciplinary best practices, standardization of processes and discussion of medical resources and capabilities. “We go teach (Ukrainian rehabilitation specialists) on specific topics during each engagement,” said Capt. Daniel Huffman, assistant chief of Rehabilitation Services at LRMC. “This gives them some new things to work on.” During the exercise, LRMC specialists, along with rehabilitation specialists from See LRMC, Page 6

‘Hybrid Airman’ training enhances 435 CRG mission attrition rate, we need our Airmen to be able to fill a variety of roles,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Jason Terry, 435th CRG commander. The event was put together by U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Travis Drouin, 435th CTS pavements and equipment maintenance craftsman, in hopes of giving attendees an “idea on how the RADR process works and how to operate the equipment associated within the RADR process.” Additionally, Drouin hopes the training will “instill confidence in the students’ ability to operate the heavy machinery equipment.” CRG Airmen were able to take away their own unique experience from the training. “The most interesting thing I learned during the training was what (the equipment) does and what it is capable of doing,” said U.S. Air Force

Tech. Sgt. Donovan Reid, 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron, Aerospace Maintenance Flight, noncommissioned officer in charge. “As a crew chief, this training provides the necessary handson training in order to augment personnel tasked with building tents and other shelter options for contingency response forces.” The 435th CRG is USAFE-AFAFRICA’s only open-the-base force. It provides scalable, cross-functional and rapidly deployable forces designed to assess and open air bases in order to perform initial airfield operations enabling rapid standup of combat operations anywhere in the area of responsibility. Hybrid Airman training provides the 435th CRG with cross-functional Airmen who are able to operate in austere environments.

NCOA PARTNERS from Page 1 “When you hear ‘Kisling NCOA,’ you immediately think of U.S. Air Forces in Europe-wide students at a centralized location but we do way more than that,” said Master Sgt. Justin Luna, Kisling NCOA director of education. “We actually go to different countries and different countries come here. We have international students and students from different branches of services. We are more than what is physically here.” Kisling NCOA isn’t limited to just USAFE students, it also extends to Air Forces Africa as part of the African Military Education Program. AMEP aims to professionalize African militaries by helping them to develop faculties and curriculums for African professional military education institutions. “This is a continuing effort and not a one-time thing,” said Chief Master Sgt. Terrance Smiley, Kisling NCOA commandant. “There are multiple events looking to professionally develop other armed forces so they can mimic what

here and we teach them how to be instructors,” said Tech. Sgt. Ruben Pineda, Kisling NCOA instructor. “We are helping them build their school house, lesson plans, curriculum writing and instructor delivery.” In order to help the Botswana air arm, Kisling instructors spend time in Germany and Botswana with the initial four instructor cadre.

“We are halfway between our 10-visit program. For the next iteration, they will be shadowing our instructors on how to be instructors themselves,” Pineda said. “Two of the four instructors have attended our NCOA course at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. So, they know what it’s like to be a student in the classroom but never have actually facilitated a course, seeing behind the scenes and

learning what it takes to be an instructor.” Once the initial cadre is trained, the Kisling NCOA instructors will travel back to Botswana and watch the cadre deliver the lessons they created. “We are going to watch, assess and provide feedback. The curriculum is going to be based off of their needs and their culture,” Pineda said. “Eventually, we want to give them a completed product, a product they can deliver once they open up their school house.” Currently, AMEP has 16 African countries with active partnerships and Kisling NCOA will continue to do its part to ensure that each country’s enlisted force is professionally developed. “The noncommissioned officer corps is the backbone of any military,” said Chief Master Sgt. Ramon ColonLopez, former U.S. Africa Command senior enlisted leader, to an auditorium full of Ghana Armed Forces soldiers during a 2018 visit to Ghana. “If you have an effective NCO corps, you will automatically have an effective and efficient armed force.”

Airlifter of the Week: Ramstein deployed Airman helps those coming home

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Eric Mrkonja, Deployment Transition Center lodging manager and vehicle control officer, inspects a vehicle at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 25. As a member of the DTC, Mrkonja helps provide critical reintegration skills and decompression opportunities for service members returning home after deployment.

Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Kirby Turbak 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs An Airman from the Deployment Transition Center was awarded Airlifter of the Week on Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 25. U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto J. Rendon, 86th AW command chief, congratulated Senior Airman Eric Mrkonja, DTC lodging manager and vehicle control officer, for his LRMC from Page 1 the 7th Medical Support Unit-Europe and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, discussed electrodiagnostic medicine, cardiac rehabilitation, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and musculoskeletal medicine. Following lectures by the Americans, Ukrainian specialists performed hands-on training on Ukrainian patients to test effectiveness. “It’s very rewarding and beneficial to (participate in the exercise),” said Huffman, a physical therapist by trade. “It’s really good for me to go and see what level they are practicing at.” The most recent journey to Ukraine is the seventh medical exercise over the past three years. Although staff consisted of rehabilitation specialists, previous collaborations also included physicians, behavioral health specialists, and nurses. “Our team provides lectures, case pre-

work with deployed service members returning home. In the last four months, he has coordinated lodging for over 1,500 redeployers and transported over 91 tons of cargo for members transitioning home. Mrkonja is currently performing twice the amount of work expected from someone in his position. “Eric isn’t only doing a phenomenal job, he’s doing jobs that are usually done by two noncommissioned officers,” August said.

As a vehicle control officer, Mrkonja worked with the 700th Contracting Squadron to purchase four passenger vans needed for daily operations. Mrkonja says he couldn’t have done it without the help of his fellow wingmen. “I’d like to thank the whole staff here. Specifically I’d like to thank my logistics staff, Sgt. Nailer, Sgt. Jones, Sgt. Sanders and Lt. Taylor,” said Mrkonja. “They helped me out every day with different obstacles.

So huge thanks to them.” The DTC provides critical reintegration skills and decompression opportunities for service members returning home after deployment. Mrkonja, a Pittsburgh native, enjoys working out, sports, travel, trying new foods and spending time with his family and friends. The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen for their hard work and dedication, making the 86th AW the “World’s Best Wing.”

sentations, and hands-on training focused on sharing our current best practices for rehabilitative interventions and goals with our Ukrainian allies,” said Terry Fee, a physical therapist at LRMC who has participated in five medical training exercises with the Ukrainians. “All major Ukrainian military medical centers are represented with approximately 30-40 attendees per session. Proficiency in rehabilitation techniques are immediate – often the techniques we discussed in lectures, actual case presentations, and smaller group lab demonstrations are implemented within one day.” Since 2014,conflict in Eastern Ukraine has resulted in an estimated 13,000 casualties, with more than 30,000 wounded, according to the United Nations. By connecting with allies and coalition partners, the providers have a better understanding of health capabilities and enhanced interoperability, resulting in improved quality of care for patients.

“(Ukraine) has some very complex patients who are Soldiers, families, and friends, (and their) rehabilitation specialists are highly dedicated to what they do,” said Fee. “We all share a common goal: To provide the best rehab possible in order to obtain the best outcome for their patients. We are all the same.” Although the Department of Defense has been engaged in issues of global health for over a century by providing humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, combating disease and reducing health threats, efforts have shifted toward building and supporting the health system capacities of partner nations. Through these efforts, partner nations and allies are trained to be more capable and ready to support the health needs of their troops and populations. “I was very impressed with the level of care they were providing but could still see where they needed more help,” said Huffman. “Through the initiative, we’re

trying to help them clinically improve their skills because in the end it’s all about trying to return their Soldiers back to (better health).” Even though current best practices are shared between American and Ukrainian specialists, resourcing the efforts to improve care in Ukraine remain a challenge. “(Americans) are lucky to live in a country where we have timely access to highly trained personnel, equipment, facilities, financial resources, and adaptive equipment at our fingertips. I was impressed with the innovation our allied rehab specialists utilized in designing ‘homegrown’ rehab tools and kits to get the job done,” said Fee. “We continue to learn from each other and I am extremely impressed with the level of compassionate care, hard work and innovation that Ukrainian rehab specialists put into treating their patients each and every day.”

Wasting time on others’ dime Story and graphic by Staff Sgt. Kirby Turbak 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In the military, it’s very common to hear “on time is late” or “always show up 15 minutes early.” Working for the U.S. Air Force involves a lot of moving parts. When any of those parts stop working, things get backed up quickly. Service members experience these moments when others decide to show up for appointments and training “fashionably late” or worse, not at all. Three units which get hit the hardest f rom missed and late appointments are medical, combat arms training and maintenance, and the emergency management flight. Instructors of the 569th Combat Arms Training and Maintenance annually train more than 7,000 service members to ensure they are able to employ their weapons in garrison and at deployed locations, according to U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Luis Fontanez, 569th CATM NCO in charge.

Tall.

Missed appointments don’t just hurt their students, but instructors take a hit as well according to Fontanez. Instructors have to work their schedules and personal appointments around class time and if a student has to reschedule, that could mean their instructors have to reschedule their appointments too. Time wasted can easily stack up man-hours for many units.

Monthly missed appointments average an additional 45 work hours for the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Emergency Management Flight. Emergency management teaches courses such as chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear training. Their training is vital for mission readiness for service members at their home base and deployed locations.

Grande.

Cars for everyone... even Court-knee

“We’re hitting the peak deployment band,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Kendra Violanti, 786th CES Emergency Management Flight installation emergency management section chief. “Members are needing these classes before heading out, but are missing them because someone who was late for one class rescheduled for another class, filling two spots.” The 86th Medical Group knows how much missed appointments cost them, and it’s stacking up. “The valued cost for each missed appointment is approximately 202 dollars,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Melvin Tsui, 86th MDG practice manager. “With 335 no-shows per month, the monthly total is equal to 67,670 dollars.” Service members can mitigate these costs by utilizing time management skills like maintaining a calendar, setting an alarm and arriving early. If all else fails, individuals should alert units ahead of time to inform them of their tardiness or missed appointment.

Angel Tree: First Sergeants kick off season of giving Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Kirby Turbak 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Kaiserslautern Military Community first sergeants got together to host the Angel Tree Kickoff on Dec. 1. The event was held at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center and promoted the Angel Tree Program, a charity that financially helps military families in the community. “The Angel Tree Event is one of the more grassroots fundraising events that you’re going to find in the Air Force. It’s been going on for quite a few years now,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Ato Ellis, 435th Air Expeditionary Wing, Security Forces

Squadron and Wing Staff Agencies first sergeant. “We identify families that can use that help during the holiday season and give money out to the families depending on the number of kids they have.” The kickoff included games with prizes, a children’s choir, a guest speaker and free cake. U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Terrance Smiley, Kisling Noncommissioned Officer Academy commandant, spoke about the importance of giving back and how it affected him in the past. “I can think back to times where the Angel Tree Program impacted me when I was a young Airman and then a young staff sergeant at Keesler Air Force Base,” Smiley said. “My finances

at the time probably weren’t what they were supposed to be, but programs like the Angel Tree allowed my family to get gifts for my kids.” From past experience, Smiley recognized the importance of communities coming together to help each other out. “Angel Tree is a program that, without a doubt, makes an impact in the community,” Smiley said. “When I think back to last year, Angel Tree throughout the KMC, raised more than 25,000 dollars, impacted more than 200 families and 400 kids. That’s what making an impact in the community is all about and that’s what Angel Tree does.” Anyone can donate by depositing cash or gift cards in envelopes and placing them in security boxes located adjacent to any Angel Tree. Angel Trees can be found at the listed locations: • Ramstein/Vogelweh commissaries • Ramstein Community Center • Ramstein North Chapel • Ramstein Officer’s Club • Vogelweh Shopette • Ramstein Express • KMCC

Postal Service employees ramp up for holiday surge

and ask to volunteer. Price said the volunteer is trained and the hours are tracked so the volunteer can get credit for the hours worked. Natalia Acosta did exactly that three years ago while her family was stationed in Belgium. “I volunteered at the post office in Belgium,” the Army spouse said. “I was offered a job shortly afterwards, so I took the opportunity and now I’m three years in as a postal employee.” After her husband was reassigned from Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers-Europe to the KMC, Acosta worked at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Postal Service Center before transferring to Rhine Ordnance Barracks eight months ago. “It’s a great opportunity. You meet people from all walks of life and all ranks,” she said. “You learn something new. I had no postal experience but I came in and volunteered, made my own schedule, and I was able to learn

from, and work with, a great team.” Acosta said getting mail to soldiers, employees and family members stationed overseas is rewarding because mail can make a bad day good. Price said the holiday season is the perfect time for volunteering in the PSC. The garrison mail rooms are full, extended open hours to accommodate holiday mailing and the employees can use the help. If the holiday season is the Super Bowl for the postal service employees, they’re beginning the second half. KMC residents who are planning to mail holiday presents to the states need to be aware of the deadlines to ensure packages arrive before Christmas Day. “We’re already very busy right now because the packages from the Black Friday sales started arriving the Monday after Thanksgiving,” said Price. “It’s already too late to guarantee a package sent on a space-available

basis will get to its destination on time. Priority and First-Class mail needed to be mailed before Dec. 11.” The post office on Rhine Ordnance Barracks is the only post office open on Saturdays for mailing a package during the holiday season, due to its centralized location within the garrison footprint, according to Price. The clock will run out on the PSC’s holiday season Jan. 11 when all of the garrison mail rooms will return to normal hours. “We have to wait until Jan. 11 to allow for all the packages that weren’t mailed in time to get here before the holidays, to arrive,” explained Price.

Story and photos by Keith Pannell U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz November started a two-month holiday season operational surge for garrison postal service employees that will last until mid-January. There are about 65 garrison employees and 10 local nationals working throughout the garrison Postal Service Centers. But, this time of year means bringing in reinforcements. “During the holiday season, we have to have seasonal hires who work from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31,” said Justin Price, Kaiserslautern Military Community acting postmaster. “We also use volunteers. We have people who volunteer year-round and they’re even more important during the stretch run through the holiday season.” Any service member, government civilian or family member who wants to volunteer can walk into any garrison postal service center (mail room)

AF releases FY20 Selective Retention Bonus program by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs WASHINGTON (AFNS) — Air Force officials released details Nov. 20 on the fiscal year 2020 Selective Retention Bonus program, which includes 72 eligible Air Force specialties. “The Air Force works hard to retain our highly trained and experienced Airmen and the annual Selective Retention Bonus program is a key element in that effort,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force Manpower, Personnel and Services deputy chief of staff. “Based on past efforts and the growth we’ve enjoyed the last few years, our manning levels are better than we’ve been in a while. Even so, we still have shortages and will continue to strategically use the Selective Retention Bonus program for those AFSCs that are most in need.”

The SRB is a tool used to retain Airmen in undermanned specialties. The program is designed to improve readiness and capacity by targeting retention of experienced Airmen in stressed career fields or those with high training costs, particularly those in operations, nuclear, maintenance, cyber, space, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and certain support career fields. “We’ve used this program to balance career fields across the force for many years,” said Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright. “We’ll continue to use bonuses where needed to make sure that our critical career fields are manned in order to meet mission requirements.” The Air Force will spend more than 150 million dollars for the FY 2020 program, which includes 72 total Air

Force Specialty Codes, including 68 that remain eligible from the FY 2019 SRB program. Due to high operational demands, low manning and retention concerns, four AFSCs in aircraft maintenance and cyber surety were added to the FY 2020 program. The previous efforts to improve career field health allowed 39 AFSCs to be removed from the list. During sequestration-related reductions in FY 2013-2014, the program had a low of 10 eligible AFSCs, and reached a high of 117 AFSCs while restoring readiness and growing over the last few years. Determining SRB-eligible AFSCs is a collaborative process with senior leaders, career field managers, policy owners and operations analysts. “We get this might not be what some folks were hoping for this year, but we’ve looked at it from all angles and this is

what our experts are telling us is the right decision. When you look at it from an enterprise perspective, you can see that while not every career field gets a bonus, this is the right move to set our team up for success in the future,” Wright said. The FY 2020 SRB program goes into effect Nov. 21. Airmen in skills identified for a reduction or termination, and who are currently eligible to reenlist, will have until Dec. 20 to take advantage of the bonus at the previous rate. The FY 2020 SRB listing is available both on myPers and the retention page on the Air Force’s Personnel Center website at https://www.afpc. af.mil/Retention/. Diamond on the rock Story and photos by Ricky J. Baptista 65th Air Base Group Public Affairs LAJES FIELD, Portugal — There are two fundamental necessities for the formation of a diamond, extreme temperatures and tons of pressure. That helps explain why the crown jewel in the arsenal of the United States Air Force is the “First Sergeant.” The 65th Air Base Group is proud to have Senior Master Sergeant Travis L. Rucker as the “Shirt.” Senior Master Sgt Rucker arrived at Lajes Field in Apr. 2018. Since then he has been a vital part in the lives of the men and women serving at Lajes Field. After meeting with him there is one overwhelming impression that Rucker exudes: Passion. His passion for the wellbeing of the organization is well-known throughout the entire installation. Like any success story, the beginning isn’t always smooth. “My dream was to follow in the footsteps of my hero, so I embarked on an unsuccessful bid to be the next Bruce Lee. I packed my stuff and moved from Eagle River, Alaska, to Los Angeles, California, with no car, no job, and no home. It was a fantastic journey and proved I could do anything I put my mind to while simultaneously showing me that without a solid plan, life can get painful very quickly. After going broke I decided to follow my love of aviation and engines and join the USAF. I processed through Military Entrance Processing Station in November of 1998 but didn’t get the call to head to Basic Training until January of 1999. I replaced a last-minute dropout; thus I showed up two days late and immediately joined the Rainbow flight. I quickly learned to hate my haircut but on the flipside, I didn’t have to perform all the “first day” drills everyone else did. That was my first real introduction to the simple fact that everything has pros and cons,” said Rucker.

After a rocky start, Rucker looked inward and slowly realized the only way to achieve greatness is to believe in yourself. “I believe the meaning of life is to give meaning to one’s life. It’s the greatest gift you can give to yourself and the beauty of such a gift is everyone else benefits as well. Personally speaking, my meaning is an overriding sense of adventure in the possible. I love the feeling that comes with an objective, a team, an adversary and clear sense of how to make the world a better place than I found it. I like to think of Hannibal Smith, a fictional character from the ‘A-Team’ television series, ‘I love it when a plan comes together,’ chomping on his cigar during the final scene,” Rucker said. Lajes Field is an unaccompanied short tour. With that, there are unique challenges that Airmen are faced with when stationed there. “When you’re away from the flagpole you always have to keep in mind that the external forces for maintaining discipline are weakened and therefore you have to work harder at reminding the Airmen why integrity is so important. Integrity is about doing what’s right even when nobody is looking and almost by definition, when you’re in a remote location your integrity will be tested. The flip side is if you can maintain your integrity and discipline, being assigned to a remote location is a welcome blessing since the unrelenting pressure of external forces you find near the flagpole rarely exists. The other large factor is separation from family and loved ones, although I would argue Lajes is the best location to mitigate that problem when compared to other remote tours — hands down,” Rucker said. “The reason the First Sergeant billet at Lajes Field is an E-8 billet is precisely because my position demands greater adaptation as a result of being located on a rock in the middle of the Atlantic.

U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Travis L. Rucker, 65th Air Base Group first sergeant, uses both his personal and professional experiences to mentor Lajes Field Airmen. Rucker’s passion for the USAF and taking care of Airmen can be felt across the 65th ABG.

U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Travis L. Rucker, 65th Air Base Group first sergeant, poses for a photo at Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal, November 21. Rucker, who followed his love of aviation and engines, joined the USAF in 1998.

My experience helps with understanding how the logistics, finance, personnel and medical fields interact throughout a base to help an Airman in need. My job is to coordinate and escort that process ahead and, when necessary, use my position to clear away obstacles. However, here I must be two steps ahead of the process or clearing away the obstacles could take much too long. For example, when family members have to visit for an emergency medical issue, I have to coordinate with multiple entities about how travel, who would pick them up and arrange billeting, how to overcome the language barrier, etc. That’s just the hospitality side of the equation, then determining family travel reimbursement, proper coordination and geographically separated unit reach back support with our host wing and so on. It’s just more cumbersome than at typical overseas bases and far more difficult than at a typical stateside base,” Rucker said. It takes talent, hard work, determination at being successful, but there are a few other secrets that will help you attain a personal level of success. “Stay focused on the objectives which stem from your meaning to aspire. Take time to think, and I mean think. Focused thinking takes as much effort as physical training and until you get practiced at it, it’s quite difficult. Focus on your goals and work backwards in small chunks to create the path in your mind and then follow it relentlessly. You’ll fall short from time to time; accept that. But stay focused and write down your way forward and check your progress regularly. It’s quite like finding your way through the wilderness. Plan out the route, find your guideposts of progress, and check your route for accuracy until you arrive. If your objective is to promote then promotion is growth; you need to grow in every sense of the word. Growth is work and it’s uncomfortable; we forget that. Embrace the discomfort; it means you’re growing. Arnold Schwarzenegger always

smiled when he worked out. He was in pain, but he knew every repetition meant growth which took him one step closer to his ultimate goals. That’s what success looks like,” Rucker said. According to one of Rucker’s principles for success, “I love life hacks. Anytime we can do anything to solve challenges and improve our collective quality of life is a task worth doing. One of my favorite hacks is to explain to people a bit more about growth. Pareto’s Principle (the 80/20 rule) is exponential in nature. Very few seem to catch on to this yet I used it to map my efforts in becoming a Senior Master Sergeant First Sergeant. Pareto stated 80 percent of the outputs are generated by 20 percent of the inputs. It follows on an exponential scale that 64 percent of the outputs are generated by 4 percent of the inputs since 80 percent x 80 percent gives you 64 percent and 20 percent x 20 percent gives you 4 percent. If repeated this happens yet again. You end up with 52 percent of outputs generated by .8 percent of the inputs. Recognize that ratio? Folks scream foul over wealth inequality but really it’s a natural state, the 1 percent own 50 percent of the wealth for the general fact that the 1 percent are extremely skilled at making money — they work at it relentlessly. Continued growth leads to exponential results, always. Any creative endeavor human beings partake in results in the same ratios of achievement. So use this principle to your advantage and become more than you ever thought possible in just a few short years. Focus on what gives you meaning and purpose, determine the skillsets needed to drive at that purpose and then grow those skillsets continuously. Your motivation will pressure you to continue to grow and before you know it, you’re in the top 4 percent or higher. By the way, the enlisted manpower allocations for E-8 and E-9 are technically 2.5 percent and 1.5 percent respectively, adding up to 4 percent. Coincidence? I think not.”

LRMC ENT employs FORSCOM specialist during Ear Week Story and photo by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Over the span of two weeks, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic maximized on the opportunity to provide specialized ear treatments to troops from Europe and Africa, their families, and military retirees, during LRMC’s Ear Week, Nov. 13-24. During the 11-day Ear Week, patients in need of specialized ear procedures were scheduled for surgical interventions with U.S. Army Maj. Douglas Ruhl, a visiting otologist assigned to the 53rd Head and Neck Team with the 47th Combat Support Hospital, based out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. While Ruhl is assigned to a U.S. Army Forces Command unit, he practices at Madigan Army Medical Center at JBLM as part of the Army’s Modified Table of Organization and Equipment Assigned Personnel, which allows medical professionals to become an organic part of a deployable unit while maintaining their place of duty at a U.S. Army Medical Command Military Treatment Facility. “(Ear Week) lets me do more cases in a short period of time than I would normally, which is nice for me since I wear two hats,” said Ruhl, who completed a two-year neurotology fellowship at the University of Virginia. “I get to help medical and combat readiness and I get

to dabble in the different roles of care so it works out well.” During Ear Week, ENT staff operated in a similar fashion to medical residencies, maximizing caseload and supplementing specialists while operating within appropriate levels of expertise. “One of the reasons of having this ear week is to allow (LRMC ENT staff) to keep that skill set from completely atrophying, so we go in and kind of function in a way like we did in medical residency where we help with the surgery, and then when it gets to the point where it’s out of our expertise level, the otologist will take over,” said U. S. Air Force Maj. Whitney Pafford, otolaryngologist assigned to LRMC’s ENT Clinic. Patients benefit from the specialized

treatments without the need for referral to host-nation providers, which can further complicate a patient’s understanding of potential risks due to language barriers or treatment modalities. “(The diagnosis are) not emergent, so patients don’t have to have surgery in a month and can wait three to five months to have surgery until a specialized provider comes out here to do it,” said Pafford. “There are some cases we’re all trained to do but unless you’re doing them regularly, (the procedures) are pretty specialized, requiring one to two years of fellowship.” Additionally, because there are serious risks involved with the specialized surgical procedures, including worsening hearing, or damage to nerves, they are reserved for specialists who perform

them on a regular basis. For military personnel, otologists may provide medical treatment to potentially career-ending diagnosis such as sensitivity to pressure changes or loss of hearing. Aside from making specialized ear procedures available for beneficiaries, waiting until Ear Week also allows patients to follow up with LRMC providers and is cost-effective for the Army. “Instead of just sending every procedure out to (host-nation specialists), hosting (Ruhl) is beneficial because the amount of money it takes to bring him out here is a fraction of what it would be for one person’s surgery,” said Pafford. “Ear surgery is pretty expensive, especially once you go to the more complex ear surgeries.” According to Pafford, if patients are in dire need of surgery, such as when diagnosed with acoustic neuroma, or a patient doesn’t want to wait for Ear Week, they can be sent back to the continental United States for their procedure where they’ll stay during post-operative care until it’s safe to fly back. This could take up to four weeks due to risks associated with high altitudes following surgery. Although the objective of this partnership with FORSCOM is to equip deploying units with qualified health care professionals, providing care at LRMC benefits all unified combatant commands overseas.

Career fair provides learning opportunity for teens Story and photo by Erinn Burgess Installation Management Command Baumholder teens attended an informal career fair with representatives from U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Nov. 22 at Wetzel Teen Center. The event provided an information gathering session for youth ages 11-18 to hear about different career fields within the garrison, according to Ryan Flynn, the center’s director. Representatives from across the garrison spoke about their respective careers and answered questions. Organizations present included the Directorate of Emergency Services — Military Police and Fire Department; Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation — Sports and Fitness; Directorate of Human Resources — Army Education Centers; Public Affairs and others. Staff Sgt. William Reynolds, DES Traffic Management and Collision Investigation NCO in charge, said the

event was “a great chance to share what we do on a day-to-day basis to help steer the kids in the directions they want to go.” Reynolds was joined by Baumholder Provost Marshal Capt. Brandon Dinger, who said “it’s good for [the teens] to start thinking about where they want to go and what they want to do. They’re young and have plenty of ideas of what they might want to do, and can narrow it down as they go along.” Over at the sports and fitness table, Teens speak to Capt. THE RED LION

IN LANDSTUHL

From left to right: Nika, John, Alex, Kat & Ashley

Now under new management, The Red Lion in Landstuhl, is not what you remember. The new owners Kat and John Kramer took over in July 2019 and have turned the place upside down! Each and every room has been renovated and updated: new lights and painted walls, a completely new tap for the bar and more. It is now bright, welcoming and even family and dog friendly. The entire staff and their families helped out, along with customers like Alf (thank you!), who all worked endlessly all day and all night for four days straight to help Kat and John’s dream come true. They turned the Red Lion into to a place you feel comfortable and safe in. A place to stop by for lunch, dinner, a late night snack or even breakfast at any time of day. A place to unwind after a long day at work. A place to come to with friends, by yourself or even with children. Four legged friends are also welcome! No matter who you are or why you go there, Kat and John will always greet you with a big smile and “Hello, How are you?” as you walk through the door. And rest assured, if you’re by yourself, you’ll have met a group of new friends by the end of the night. The atmosphere is always fun and boy do they have a lot to offer! The staff of five, plus the owners, know how to take care of their guests. They have a pool table, offer bingo, karaoke, live music, and show NFL, college football and UFC. If you’re there and would rather watch basketball, that’s perfectly fine too. Just ask! The entire staff cares about you Photos with Santa

and your input. They are open to suggestions and criticism, want to improve wherever possible and take the time to listen to and implement your feedback. As a bartender by trade and originally from England, Kat surely knows what belongs in your traditional English pub. The menu does not disappoint. The tap itself consists of 11 different kinds of beer, like Kilkenny, Guiness, Newcastle Brown Ale or even Strongbow Cider, just to name a few. One tap is seasonal and used to introduce new kinds or specials (while supplies last). If you prefer exported beers, you can order Corona, San Miguel or Heineken. German beers are naturally on tap, too — Karlsberg Helles, Paulaner Hefeweizen and Bitburger. There is also a huge selection of spirits and liquors. If you’re feeling hungry, John will most certainly take care of you. Besides your typical bar snacks, the Red Lion has quite the extensive choice of food for a pub. Hamburgers with all the trimmings and sauces on the side, chicken wings, bangers (sausages) and mash, or fish & chips. Be sure to try their homemade Cottage Pie with ground beef in gravy, covered in mashed potatoes and baked in the oven — taste a piece of Great Britain right in the middle of Landstuhl! The pub can seat up to 30 people and easily accommodate up to 100. The former smoking area in a separate room has its own bar at which you can order shots on Friday nights. Next year they plan on remodelling this room to make
