Around-the-clock fitness at Ramstein Story and photo by Senior Airman Damon Kasberg 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Air Force mission runs 24 hours a day, but not every base service does the same. That is about to change as the Ramstein Northside Fitness Center plans to modify its hours. Starting Jan. 1, the fitness center will be open from 4 a.m. Monday to midnight Friday. “The Air Force started an initiative about a year ago to have fitness centers open 24/7,” said Maj. Michelle Tarkowski, 786th Force Support Squadron commander. “Unfortunately, we haven’t received the funding yet to implement that fitness access program, but we had a lot of customers in Ramstein and the KMC who expressed Airmen enter the Ramstein Northside Fitness Center Nov. 26. Starting Jan. 1, the Northside Fitness Center will be available to service members and other ID card holders from 4 a.m. Monday to midnight Friday.

Capt. Daniel McCarey is posted to Germany, yet rarely sees fellow American Soldiers. McCarey, a U.S. exchange officer at the German Armed Forces’ military police command in Hannover, Germany, recently brought 27 German military police troops to U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, where they met with U.S. military police, criminal investigators and detention specialists. The three-day visit served as an efficient way for allies to interact and learn from each other. “There is not a lot of American contact in German life,” said McCarey, who grew up bilingual as a son of a German mother and a U.S. Army Soldier. “I think it gives them a good idea of what Americans do.”

McCarey, who is five months into a twoyear assignment working with the German MPs, last served in Stuttgart in 2007. He was raised in Germany and attended German schools, so he’s comfortable in his current role. Still, it’s much different than a regular overseas assignment. “It’s crazy, because you don’t work with any Americans on a day-to-day basis,” McCarey said. “I am not on a U.S. base; there is no PX, no commissary, no APO box.” A good partnership program is based upon the evaluation of the partner unit’s practices, which can be adopted to the organization’s

Don’t let trust fall COMMENTARY

by Lt. Col. Amy Russo 86th Medical Squadron administrator Trust is a small word with immense consequence. It is the key component to effective organizational communication, the driving force for innovation, and the key element of successful leaders and the organizations they lead. When you walk into an organization, you know if there’s a culture of trust. You either feel it, or you don’t. In a military society, trust is a lifeline we cannot live without. Our organizational structure, our chain of command, the basis upon which we promote the next highest grade and our ability to perform our duty all comes down to trust. When trust exists in an organization or in a relationship, almost everything else is easier and more comfortable to achieve. Information flows with less effort, actions are less likely to be delayed because of mistrust, and suspenses more likely are met. Communication that builds trust is elevated communication and more effective. It lifts understanding, aligns POLICE, from Page 1

concepts, said 2nd Lt. Jan Oswald, a German MP who shares an office with McCarey. “He is full of ideas and always tries to reach a goal,” said Oswald of his American colleague. “You learn a lot from each other, especially many cultural aspects, which can be so different.”

our purpose (especially if we can’t see it) and improves relationships. For this and many other reasons, we have to continue to trust ourselves and each other. With all the challenges the military faces today, it was great to read that a June Gallop Poll rated the military as the institution Americans have the highest level of confidence in, with a 76 percent rating. Why? They trust us. Leaders who empower subordinate leadership with the flexibility to define outcomes will meet mission requirements and support creative solutions to that end. Creating that environment starts with basic principled actions of consistency, respecting boundaries, and release of omnipotent control to foster an open organization that breeds creativity. Sound crazy? Yes. It’s a paradox and a risk. For many outsiders, the military represents a highly structured and controlled environment that would seem to stifle creativity rather than support it, but that’s not the case. Military innovations have changed the face of medicine and redefined transportation safety. The environ-

For MPs, knowing how allied forces operate offers both nations opportunities to develop, Oswald said. Lt. Col. George Brown, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s emergency services director, first learned of the exchange program during a visit last year to the German military police school in Hannover.

ment for that level of innovation grew from a culture of trust — trust we rely on to succeed. Organizations, military or civilian, with the highest trust levels outperform those that are not trusted 2-to-1. While leadership that comes with rank and position still has a place, power-based leadership is becoming less relevant. It must be earned, not demanded. It’s the ability to persuade someone over whom you have no power, or to persuade without using the rank-based power, that will identify you as a successful leader. A wise, old chief once said about leadership: “Either inspire or retire.” Without trust, you cannot hope to inspire anyone. Trust is a function of both character and competence. We indoctrinate ourselves based on core values embodying integrity, excellence and service. Cultivating those values first requires trust. We must build it, foster it and sustain it. Steven Covey said it best, “I could give you a dictionary definition of trust, but you know it when you feel it.” I would challenge you to ask yourself, “Do you feel it?”

“If we make sure that our missions and support are in line and parallel to each other, we are stronger than we are individually,” Brown said. “This open relationship with each other is certainly mutually beneficial to both of our organizations.” During their visit to the KMC, the German MPs visited the emergency services directorate at Rhine

Ordnance Barracks, the Criminal Investigation Command at Kleber Kaserne, and the U.S. Army Regional Correctional Facility-Europe in Mannheim. “It will be up to whatever the Germans take from that (visit) and maybe develop into some of their own courses of action in their army,” McCarey said.

COMSEC every Airman’s job Story and graphic by Senior Airman Damon Kasberg 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In an era when everything from banking, mass communication and shopping can be done in front of a computer screen, communications security is more important than ever. When that security involves the safety of service members around the globe, mistakes can be life-threatening. The wing COMSEC office is responsible for providing safe and secure communication methods throughout Ramstein, but ultimately every Airman plays a role in cyber security. “People should keep COMSEC in mind at all times, especially when dealing with classified material,” said Tech. Sgt. Ezequiel Rivera, 86th Communications Squadron COMSEC manager. “Loss or release of classified information could negatively affect the interest of national security. It could lead to an adversary gaining an advantage over the United States. “Airmen need to ensure awareness of what constitutes a COMSEC incident and who they report incidents to if necessary,” he added. COMSEC measures and controls are taken to deny unauthorized persons from accessing telecommunications. This includes crypto security, transmission security, emission security, traffic-flow security and physical security of COMSEC material. “It is used to protect classified and unclassified traffic on military communication networks,” Rivera said. “This guarantees the authenticity of telecommunications, while still delivering the con-

tent to the intended recipients. “Security issues that occur can vary,” he continued. “Minor breaches in COMSEC can be the destruction of material too late or too early without approval. Major breaches can be theft, unauthorized viewing, access or copying of classified material.” While COMSEC is comprised of many different aspects, there are simple steps Airmen can take to ensure information assurance. “Airmen shouldn’t download freeware, shareware or public software; they should check with the information assurance officer before downloading anything,” said Staff Sgt. Tobey Newby, 86th Comptroller Squadron information assurance officer. “They shouldn’t plug in devices that aren’t approved. They should also familiarize themselves

interest in being able to work out during evening hours. To fulfill those needs we decided to extend the Northside Fitness Center’s hours during the work week.” The fitness center being open all day provides Airmen more flexibility with their workout routines, especially for those who work different shifts. It’s not only available to military members; anyone who is an ID card holder can take advantage of the 24/5 program. “This sounds like a great idea,” said Airman 1st Class Alex Boutwell, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron vehicle mechanic. “People in my shop work swing and night shifts, which makes it hard to get a workout in when the gym closes at 11. Sometimes I fall asleep after work, and by the time I get up, I don’t have enough time to work out. It will be nice to have it open longer.” Though the fitness center will be open longer, not all the areas will be available. The weight room, racquet ball courts, locker rooms and parent-child play area will be closed. “People will still have access to a lot of equipment,” said Isaac Melendez, 786th Force Support Squadron Northside Fitness Center director. “The main fitness lobby will be open, along with the two bathrooms in the front lobby. They can utilize the resistance weight equipment, cardio machines and free weights. “People love to workout, and I think this a great idea for those who can’t come to the fitness center because of their schedule,” he continued. “They’re going to have more time to workout, and it’s not going to be as crowded. The public should be very excited … our staff is already excited about this new transformation.” For more information on the Ramstein Northside Fitness Center and its hours of operation, call 480-8085.

with the computer emergency quick response aid by their desk. “It’s everyone’s responsibility to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the information we receive and information systems,” he added. Airmen of the past and present learned to defend the skies, but now must learn how to defend cyber space from an ever present threat. Though the threat seems less tangible than the enemies of the past, the damage it can do is quite real. Proper COMSEC practiced by every Airman will help prevent the damage and ensure the Air Force remains the world’s leading air, space and cyberspace power. For more information or COMSEC concerns, contact the wing COMSEC office at 480-7776.

Ramstein Airmen stand up for safety Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Jordan Castelan 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

afety was the topic of discussion for the 86th Airlift Wing Nov. 25 as organizations took a pause from normal operations to put safety into the forefront of their minds. Ramstein Airmen organized and implemented forums covering a range of safety concerns, including motorcycle and private motor vehicle safety, as well as on- and off-duty concerns. Commanders’ calls were held at the wing, group and squadron levels to address safety concerns. Discussions were designed to create an interactive environment for Airmen to share concerns and experiences. “We have to highlight the importance of safety,” said Master Sgt.

Troy Hoffman, 86th Airlift Wing Safety ground safety manager. “Many people are only concerned about safety after a tragic incident, and we are trying to find ways to change that mindset and have safety in the forefront of people’s minds.” A spike in mishaps toward the end of fiscal year 2013 made it clear to Air Force leadership that additional safety training was necessary. “With proper education and situational awareness, we can eliminate these unnecessary losses,” said Master Sgt. Gil Leal Zertuche, 86th AW Safety superintendent. “Everyone needs to be aware of the outcomes that follow not heeding proper safety procedures.” Standing up for safety and education puts safety back into their minds and can help save lives. It allows them to reach out and impact someone with education and training before something unfortunate impacts them.

Brig. Gen. Patrick X. Mordente, 86th Airlift Wing commander, discusses safety concerns with Airmen, Nov. 25 on Ramstein. Airmen of the 86th AW participated in a wing stand down day where concerns about safety, on and off duty, were addressed.

Local German reserve organization recognizes emergency services director Story and photo by Rick Scavetta U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Encouraged by a growing relationship with U.S. forces at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, German reserve troops recently honored Lt. Col. George Brown, the garrison’s emergency services director. Brown, who oversees military police, firefighters and security at Army posts throughout RheinlandPfalz, received a silver commendation medal from the Bavarian Association of Soldiers, 1874, an organization of German reserve military members. They presented him with the honor and an accompanying plaque during a recent supper at a local restaurant. Oberstabsfeldwebel Roland Christmann, a senior German NCO and the organization’s chairman, and Harald Westrich, mayor of the Otterbach union community, presided over the brief ceremony. After Sept. 11, 2001, Germans noticed they had less frequent contact with American forces, Christmann said. That has changed recently, to include partnering together for community events. On June 14, when garrison firefighters held a “Thank You, Wounded Warriors” luncheon at the USO Warrior Center on Wilson Barracks, German reserve members helped cook food on their field kitchen, said Hans Zoske, a garrison fire prevention inspector who’s helped coordinate partnership efforts. They helped serve both wounded warriors and hospital staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. On Nov. 17, garrison personnel joined the German reserves in Otterbach for the community’s ceremony for Volkstrauertag, the people’s mourning day. The public holiday in Germany commemo-

rates all those who died in armed conflicts. They also joined together for a Nov. 24 church service in Kaiserslautern to support the old, poor and lonesome. “This partnership that began last summer is very important to us,” Christmann said. Christmann spoke of Brown as a longtime friend to Germany, who’s served for more than a decade in Europe, contributing to the safety of Americans and Germans alike. “Security begins with a family and ends within a

nation,” Christmann said. “Because of his work and his co-workers, Europe is a safer place.” During the event, Brown mentioned that he and his German wife, Sandra, were also celebrating their ninth anniversary that day. He stressed that soldiers, regardless of nationality, understand that they act for those beside them — their friends and their partners. “I’m humbled to be a part of this event and proud to be part of this community,” Brown said. “We’re in this together, no matter what comes.”

When Gage Riddoch recently learned he’d been chosen as the Army’s top substance abuse counselor, it was not the best news he heard that day. The U.S. Army Center for Substance Abuse Programs recently chose Riddoch, 36, an Army Substance Abuse Program counselor at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, as the 2013 Drug Counselor of the Year. “The same day I found out, I got a phone call from a past patient no longer in Germany. He and his wife called to thank ASAP for helping them,” Riddoch said. “That’s the real award. I don’t get those calls every day.” Riddoch counsels Soldiers at Kleber Kaserne. A clinical psychologist, social worker and chemical dependency professional, he empowers Soldiers with information. “Soldiers have a lot of misconceptions of what the program is about,” Riddoch said. “We offer education and counseling. We offer an opportunity for Soldiers to learn how to function in a healthy manner without alcohol.” Soldiers are either self-referred or ordered to ASAP by their commander because of an alcohol-related incident. If eligible, they begin a three-month outreach program, where they learn new coping skills. “Soldiers are not on sofas talking about their mothers or their feelings,” Riddoch said. “We get right to work assessing their risks and helping them learn new behaviors, so they can get out of our program as soon as they are ready, to get back to their job and the mission.” The garrison’s ASAP was also recently named the Army winner of the 2013 Secretary of Defense Community Drug Awareness Award for the second year in a row. Having a plaque recognizing his service is an honor, Riddoch said. But genuine feedback that ASAP helped a Soldier save his marriage and career, like the call Riddoch received, “That’s huge.” The Soldier, an NCO, struggled with work, relationships and finances — typical when alcohol takes over in a person’s life. But, he learned new life skills, returned to church and broadened his support network, Riddoch said. “He was a good guy and he wanted to make things right. He needed a second chance,” Riddoch said. “A lot of us need second chances.”

The Angel Tree program started once again as the Ramstein Airman & Family Readiness Center and the First Sergeants Council crowned this year’s tree. Designed to help families in financial need, the Angel Tree program offers an opportunity for KMC members to donate to families who are undergoing rough times during the holiday season. Last year, 244 families received help and nearly 400 children received some extra holiday cheer through the Angel Tree Program. “We want to actively help the community as much as possible,” said Dana Doan, 86th Force Support Squadron community readiness consultant. “The holiday season can be difficult for many, and with this year’s previous furloughs and cutbacks, we want to ensure we can help put a smile on everyone’s face.”

This year’s program added four more trees that are waiting to spread holiday cheer. The trees can be found at the following locations. Ramstein: • Kaiserslautern Military Community Center • Express Shoppette • Ramstein Enlisted Club • Ramstein Officers’ Club • Commissary • North and southside chapels • Post office Vogelweh: • Commissary • Chapel • Express Shoppette “We are providing an opportunity for each and every person to improve the lives of everyone around them,” said Senior Master Sgt. Making it home: Safety key from road, house Going home at the end of the day is a welcomed experience for most people after a busy day, but without the right precautions, driving can be hazardous during the winter months. Vehicle accidents increase at an alarming rate during colder weather because many drivers fail to compensate for the increased driving hazards created by sleet, ice and snow. Good winter driving safety practices can prevent most of these accidents, getting people from the road to the house in one piece. Severe weather conditions pose a big threat to drivers. Traction on slippery roads will only be as good as the vehicle’s tires, so make sure they have adequate tread. You have a better chance of weathering the storm if you use snow tires. Brakes should be checked and adjusted if necessary. Check your

exhaust system for leaks, too. Driving with the windows closed in cold weather could mean disaster if your exhaust is faulty. For drivers with little or no winter driving experience, it’s highly recommended to practice accelerations and stops prior to being exposed to heavy road traffic. An empty, wide open area, such as a parking lot, is ideal for this type of practice. Don’t speed — In basic terms, don’t drive faster than conditions safely allow. Remember, the distance needed to stop on ice or snow is three to 12 times greater than the distance required to stop on dry pavement. Plan ahead — Look out for sudden slowing of traffic and pedestrians crossing the street. Plan your stops and slow down well in advance. Thinking ahead

is the best way to make your stops are safe. Slow down gradually, and be especially careful when you approach an intersection. All the traffic starting and stopping polishes the snow and ice, increasing the hazard. You can’t stop on a dime on ice or snow. To avoid a collision when being followed by another car, start your braking action sooner and signal well in advance to allow the other driver time to know your intentions. Communicating with other drivers by using the stop lights and turn signals properly is a very important tool to prevent rear end collisions. When following, don’t tailgate. Give yourself extra stopping distance. If you suddenly find yourself on an icy patch of roadway, don’t panic. Just ride it out with no abrupt change in direction, speed or braking. If your

transmission is standard, depress the clutch to remove the drag on the drive wheels. If it is automatic, slip the selector into the neutral position. Stay away from the brake. Locking your brakes will certainly cause a skid; maintaining rolling traction is better. The best thing you can do to decrease your chances of being involved in an accident is to plan ahead. Look beyond the car immediately ahead and try to determine and anticipate what other drivers will be doing and how it will affect you. Always be on the lookout for hazardous situations as they develop so you can plan your reaction before it is required. If you are involved in an accident, wearing your seat belt could be the tie breaker that keeps you alive. (Courtesy of 86th Airlift Wing Safety Office)

Judge advocate general’s corps announces law school programs Eligible officers wanting to become Air Force lawyers can submit applications for the Funded Legal Education Program and Excess Leave Program between Jan. 1 and March 1. The number of FLEP and ELP applicants selected in any academic year is determined based on the needs of the Air Force. Applicants compete for selection. The FLEP is a paid legal studies program for active-duty Air Force commissioned officers. The FLEP is an assignment action, and participants receive full pay, allowances and tuition. FLEP applicants must have between two and six years activeduty service, enlisted or commissioned, and must be a captain or below as of the day they begin law school. The FLEP is subject to tuition limitations and positions may be limited due to overall funding availability. The ELP is an unpaid legal studies program for Air Force officers. ELP participants do not receive pay and allowances, but remain on active duty for retirement eligibility and benefits purposes. ELP applicants must have between two and ten years active duty service and must be a captain or below as of the first day of law school. Both the FLEP and ELP require attendance at an American Bar Association approved law school. Upon graduation and admission to practice law in the highest court of any state, territory of the U.S., or a federal court, candidates are eligible for designation as judge advocates. To be considered for FLEP or ELP, applicants must have completed all application forms, applied to at least one ABA approved law school, received their Law School Admissions Test results and completed a Staff Judge Advocate interview. Officers must also provide a letter of conditional release from their current career field. oldiers from the 7th Civil Support Command and the 21st Theater Sustainment Command gathered in the Kaiserslautern Community Activity Center on Daenner Kaserne Nov. 19 to 21 to conduct quarterly foreign consequence management training. Soldiers engage in FCM operations when natural or man-made disaster afflicts an area or nation such as the disaster wrought by Typhoon Yolanda in the Phillipines. During quarterly training, these actions are refined to ensure all Soldiers are best prepared to perform their mission. This marks the third iteration of training for members of both units. The first few days of previous sessions were classroom-oriented, with briefings from subject matter experts explaining how individual sections in an FCM task force contribute to the overall mission. This time, Soldiers were immediately placed into working groups to develop and refine their courses of action. The goal of the new approach is improved mission-readiness. “Members from the 21st TSC and the 7th CSC are working together in their groups to develop our plans of action now, instead of waiting for a disaster to hit and having to scramble at the last minute,” said Capt.

Dan O’Connor, the 21st TSC’s chief of operational law. “By sitting down together, asking each other the hard questions and determining how we need to act in the future, we will save time and energy when a mission comes up.” Each working group submitted a “sevenminute drill” and any documents necessary for their mission in an FCM situation to Col. Russell A. Henderson, the 7th CSC deputy commanding officer. He reviewed all products and provided feedback to ensure each section had the best product possible. These products are for use in the 7th CSC’s upcoming “Saber Guardian” exercise, Henderson said. “After this training session we will have a very good series of products that will aid us in our upcoming exercise and future foreign consequence management operations,” Henderson said. “When we went into our FCM exercise earlier this year, we spent a great deal of time preparing products. This year, we will go in with our products and information ready.” The 7th CSC and 21st TSC have one more quarterly training session before “Saber Guardian.” “When we get done with the next quarterly training, we want to have the best solution possible to most of the problems we may face during a foreign consequence management scenario,” Henderson said. “Going into ‘Saber Guardian,’ we will be well prepared.”

‘First in Support’ Soldiers learn to think about their thinking, develop strategies to strengthen intel analysis Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Alexander A. Burnett 21st TSC Public Affairs

he 21st Theater Sustainment Command hosted Critical Thinking Structured Analysis training for intelligence analysts from the KMC Nov. 12 to 21 on Panzer Kaserne. Analysts from the 21st TSC’s 16th Sustainment Brigade, 18th Military Police Brigade and 30th Medical Brigade received the training alongside members of the Air Force from the 603rd Air Operations Center and Distributing Ground Station. Their instructor flew from Royal Air Force Station Molesworth in the U.K. and taught each member analysis and critical thinking skills to make them more effective, said Peter J. Hansen, a Defense Intelligence Agency instructor. “We want these intelligence analysts to be critical of any information they receive,” Hansen said. “We also want them to be critical of the way they think. They need to think about their thinking.” Hansen defines “thinking about their thinking” as analyzing how information becomes knowledge.

When developing an intelligence report, Soldiers receive intelligence data and form opinions early on. One objective of the class is to break them of that habit. “One of the things I learned during the class is to stop jumping to conclusions early in my analysis,” said Pfc. Michael A. Peirre-Louis, an intelligence analyst with the 21st TSC. “When I work on an intel product, I form an opinion based on the first pieces of information I read. Now I know not to do that.” During the eight-day course, the Soldiers and Airmen learned of and used strategies designed to make them more critical in their thinking and analysis of information. It taught them to question their own logic, question the validity of the information received and draw solid, data-based conclusions, Hansen said. “By evaluating their sources and evaluating their own thinking the analyst can better assess the information and make any patterns in attack or hostility more apparent,” Hansen said. “In the end, this training will lead to better intel analysis products for these Soldiers and Airmen. It will also allow them to develop these products faster, helping Soldiers that

may be in harm’s way.” The course concluded with the Soldiers and Airmen breaking up into small groups and conducting their own analysis of information on a terrorist organization. Each team worked together and applied what they learned to identify the leader of the terrorist group based on information from a variety of simulated sources. Each team presented their findings

to the class before graduation. “The exercise at the end let us put everything we learned into play. I put together a timeline with the simulated information we received so my team could get a better picture of who the terrorist leader might be,” said Pfc. Ashley N. Wyche, an intelligence analyst with the 21st TSC. “When I go back to my section I will take these critical thinking skills with me.”

10th AAMDC Soldiers keep focus on SHARP lessons by Staff Sgt. John Zumer 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command Public Affairs

eople following the news for Armyrelated topics have plenty to choose from these days, with troop reductions, Afghanistan and the budget sequester only scratching the surface. All of those issues can take a backseat, however, to the Sexual Harassment Assault Response and Prevention emphasis, and several Kaiserslauternbased units continue to provide Soldiers with crucial training. The 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, along with the 19th Battlefield Coordination Detachment and other smaller units, recently gathered senior leadership at respective sessions to discuss many SHARPrelated issues. Recent history, the path forward, the role of alcohol in assaults and victim’s rights were all prominent as leaders grappled with the unpleasant facts all military services confront. For one leader

present, a business as usual approach won’t get the needed job done. “Do we have the right training planned? Death by PowerPoint isn’t going to work,” said Col. Greg Brady, commander of the 10th AAMDC. Key leaders at the seminars were briefed by local experts who handle SHARP issues in their daily jobs. Professionals in the military police, social services and legal realms briefed the gathered Soldiers and Airmen on common sexual assault factors, victims seeking justice balanced against the rights of an alleged perpetrator and how victims attempt to put their lives back together, as hard as that may be. The common perception that a predator leaps out of the bushes to attack a stranger was also debunked by the gathered experts, who cited the more likely scenario of a known acquaintance taking advantage of unsuspecting friends or co-workers. Should a common recreational outlet also be present, the experts cautioned, the odds for an assault to occur increase significantly.

“Bad judgment doesn’t get better with alcohol,” said Lt. Col. Katherine Lehmann, an attorney with the U.S. Army Legal Services Agency, emphasizing the importance of being sober when out on the town or in private surroundings. For the Soldiers and Airmen present, the seminars represented a chance to not only see how other services are tackling the SHARP dilemma, but how joint resources might be focused. The old saying of “one team, one fight” certainly was relevant for many involved, with the KMC containing many military branches. “It’s imperative that we get a joint perspective on the subject of sexual assault because it’s not only the Army’s top priority to stop sexual assault, it’s a priority of the other services as well,” said Sgt. 1st Class David Stegman. Stegman, the S3 planning NCOIC for the 19th BCD, thought the daylong SHARP training was invaluable to those attending. “The in-depth feedback, not only from our unit leaders, but also the feedback from the Air Force subject matter experts, will make our units better,” he said.

FORT MEADE, Md. — The Joint Hometown News Service, part of the Defense Media Activity here, is partnering this year with SiriusXM Radio to enable service members worldwide to send holiday greetings to loved ones back home. Military members anywhere can call a toll-free number, 888-776-2790 or DSN 312-733-4660, to record a holiday message for airing on the satellite radio network. For 30 years, holiday greetings have been collected by Joint Hometown News Service teams that travel overseas and bring messages back to air on stateside radio and television stations. While this year’s team already has returned home, it’s not too late for service members to participate, said the program’s director. “Even in the world today with social media and service members able to Skype from anywhere, there’s still something special about turning on the radio and hearing a family member who cannot be home for the holidays,” said Rick Blackburn, director of the Joint Hometown News Service. “This is a great opportunity for our folks and is a reminder to the American public that our men and women serve around the world, 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” he said. Airmen can call SiriusXM

around the clock and leave a 15-second greeting. They will be prompted by a recorded message to provide their name, rank, duty location, hometown and then a short greeting to friends or family. “Our goal is to get as many military members on the air for the holidays as possible,” Blackburn said. So far this year, 2,658 holiday greetings have been collected. A Joint Hometown News Service team traveled to Alaska, Japan, Korea and Guam. Additional greetings were also collected from service members in Afghanistan and Europe by American Forces Network broadcasters. With Defense Department budget cuts, teams are not able to travel as much as they used to, and the Joint Hometown News Service appreciates oth-

ers pitching in to help with holiday greetings, said Amy “Natasha” Schleper, JHNS broadcast chief. “With other outlets willing to pitch in and shoot for us, we’re able to really get a good number of holiday greetings, as well as a better mix of locations,” Schleper said. “It’s a lot of extra work for them,” she said. “We hope they know the families at home appreciate their efforts.” Every video greeting is turned into a radio greeting as well, Schleper said. SiriusXM Radio is “another avenue we are using” to collect and distribute important holiday greetings, Blackburn said. The holiday greetings will be aired on SiriusXM’s “Holiday Traditions” channel through Jan. 1.

For Delp and her family, the race was almost a homecoming of sorts. “It seemed like the perfect opportunity and the coming together all of the things we love — Ethiopia and running,” said Delp, an environmental engineer for the Defense Logistics Agency at U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz’s Kleber Kaserne. Earlier this year, Delp’s husband, Mike, saw the ad for the marathon in Runner’s World magazine. “We’d been saying we wanted to go back, we just needed a reason,” she said. They first visited Ethiopia almost seven years ago to adopt Lilly from a local orphanage there. Ever since then, they’ve longed to return to show their daughter her birthplace and give back to the local community. “The needs there are really tremendous, especially when you go to the orphanage. Things like diapers. It is such a critical need, because they just don’t have access to good disposable diapers, and we noticed that the first time we went to get our daughter,” she said. The trip was also an opportunity to bring donations from the KMC to Ethiopia. A group from Church of Christ and the KMC Homeschool Fellowship donated money, diapers, toys, medical supplies, backpacks, candy and other items. While in Ethiopia, Delp distributed those things to children at local orphanages, including the one where Lilly was adopted. “That was just fabulous to have that support from the families here. They really did a lot, and we brought almost 10 huge boxes full of donations,” she said. “We got to go deliver them at the

orphanages and it was a really neat experience.” Delp made sure she documented their visit through photos to show supporters like Erin Acevedo exactly how their donations were making a difference. “It was really a wonderful opportunity for us to become involved in this. Obviously, we would have loved to go on a trip like that, but this was our nearest outlet to be able to be involved,” Acevedo said. “Through them, we were able to give something back and do something good for others.” Moray Mountain Sports, a California-based company, organized the race and coordinated local trips for visiting foreigners. The race, the first of its kind, is planned to be held annually now. During their trip, the Delp family also went on tours, performed charity work and spent a week in the capital city of Addis Ababa. “Ethiopia is really an incredible country and just a really beautiful place. It’s not somewhere that people particularly think of going to for vacation, but the landscape is gorgeous, and the people are so sweet and warm, and the food is amazing,” Delp said. “It just has a lot to offer. But, sadly, I don’t think that message has gotten out.”

Baumholder youth establishes Little Free Library Story and photo by Ignacio “Iggy” Rubalcava U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder Public Affairs Office

Math Counts Math Counts students at Landstuhl Elementary/Middle School try to achieve the Math Counts Gold level status again. If achieved, this will be the sixth time they have achieved this award. LEMS is the only school in Department of Defense Education Activity that has achieved Gold level this many times. Thirty students are involved in the program at LEMS.

A new library is now open on Smith Barracks. You don’t need a library card, there are no late fees, there is no librarian hovering ominously nearby ensuring that a book does not accidently fall into your coat pocket and it’s open 24/7. It’s a little bigger than a bread box and looks more like an upscale condo for birds than a library, but the books in it are free for the taking, with the stipulation that you eventually return it or replace it with another book. Take a book, return a book is a simple but effective concept that the Little Free Library is based on. Conveniently located near the entrance to the community mail room, the Little Free Library is the brain child of Lorne Huxtable, 12, a seventh grade student at Baumholder Middle High School. Like the library’s concept, Huxtable’s motivation for the project is also a simple one. “I need to get better at reading, so I thought I’d just promote literacy throughout the whole community as well,” he said. Huxtable enlisted the aid of the U.S. and German communities to make his idea a reality. Construction and installation of the library was done by members of the USAG Baumholder Directorate of Public

Works. Huxtable’s mother, Michele, a teacher at Baumholder Middle School, rounded up the initial collection of books by soliciting donations from her friends and colleagues, and one of her students painted the library. Huxtable also received support from Lt. Col. Mike Sullivan, USAG Baumholder commander. “I think this is a great idea. I love the fact that I’ve seen people take books out and put another book back. In fact, I’ve got some books at the house that I’ll bring down here once it gets a little bit empty,” Sullivan said. Although Huxtable came up with the idea of providing this service to the community, the Little Free Library is not a new idea. Little Free Libraries are chartered and located around the world, so Huxtable had to obtain permission to establish his Little Free Library. “It’s registered online so we have permission to do this,” he said. Baumholder’s Little Free Library is the third one in Germany. He also has plans for expansion. A second Little Free Library is planned for Wetzel and yet another will be installed on Smith. “On behalf of the whole Baumholder community, I have to tell you we’re proud you came up with this idea. You did all the leg work and you’ve given something back to the community that’s going to touch literally hundreds of people,” Sullivan said.

Librarians answer questions about books and library services and teach parents how to interest their children in books. Story time is for children ages 2 to 5. No sign-up required. Enjoy stories, music and crafts. The RheinlandPfalz Main Library is located in Bldg. 3810. For details, call 486-7322 or 0637186-7322.

Lt. Col. Mike Sullivan, U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder commander, listens as Lorne Huxtable explains the concept of the Little Free Library. Huxtable’s desire to improve his reading skills and spread literacy throughout the Baumholder community inspired him to provide this free service.

Sankt Wendel hosts Christmas/medieval market by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The City of Sankt Wendel will hold its Christmas market combined with a medieval market Saturday to Dec. 15. More than 130 little decorated houses and booths will offer arts and crafts, gift ideas and regional culinary specialties from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Vendors in historical costumes will

Every day at 4 p.m., the Three Holy Kings and their camels walk through the center of St. Wendel.

sell their merchandise. Craftsmen such as basket makers, lantern makers, blacksmiths, potters, turners and soap makers will demonstrate their work and ask visitors to try to do the same. Jugglers, dancers, singers, musicians and a magician will entertain in the streets and on stage. Camp groups will demonstrate how people lived, worked, ate and celebrated in the Middle Ages. A Roman re-enactment group will display Roman times during the time of Christ’s birth Dec. 14 and 15. Every afternoon at 4 p.m., the Three Holy Kings from the Orient and their camels will go through the center of town. Back at their camp they will perform the Christmas story in colorful scenes. Each day there will be a show with fire, lights, music and dancing. Children can meet Santa Claus and his reindeer at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. daily. They can have a seat on his slide and tell him their wishes for Christmas. A 12-meter-tall Christmas pyramid, life-sized nutcrackers, a miniature village with 200 dwarfs and a big Nativity scene will lure visitors as well. A toboggan run with snow from the Alps will provide some winter fun Monday to Friday.

Street artists in fire bird costumes entertain the audience at St. Wendel’s Christmas market.

A nostalgic merry-go-round, a colorful magic tree and live animals will provide some more excitement for children. A night watchman with horn and lantern will patrol the market at 7 p.m. before the brass players perform from the basilica tower at 7:30 p.m. to let visitors know that

the market is about to close. For more information, visit www. sanktwendel.de. Sankt Wendel is a little romantic town in the federal state of Saarland, north of Neunkirchen. Parking is available in City-Garage from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays.
