Silver Flag builds runways, multi-capable Airmen Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Megan Beatty 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 435th Construction and Training Squadron hosted a total force Silver Flag training course for U.S. Air Force Airmen and members of NATO, the Dutch army, German and Israeli air forces, Nov. 9-19. The training allowed more than 150 members from civil engineer, force support and vehicle maintenance career fields to come together and learn skills necessary to complete large-scale base recovery and rapid air field damage recovery (RADR) operations. The training is required for U.S. Airmen every three years. The Airmen learn skills such as building a bare base, responding to base attacks and operating a mortuary. The course ends with a two-day field training exercise; culminating with RADR training to repair a runway. “This is the first time a lot of these Airmen are seeing this equipment and getting hands-on See SILVER FLAG, Pages 2-3

Page 2 SILVER FLAG from Page 1 training with it,” U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Nicholas Mosier, 435 CTS cadre, said. “Training like Silver Flag makes us multi-capable Airmen across the board so we are ready for any type of attack that might occur.” The students perform tasks outside their regular duties while at Silver Flag. This is because they may be called upon to aid other areas of their career field in realworld scenarios. “If we are attacked and there are craters on the runway, RADR allows us to get back to being a fully operational air field as soon as possible,” U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Soren Hoffman, Royal Air Force Lakenheath 48th Civil Engineer Squadron Engineering Flight deputy and Silver Flag RADR officer in charge, said. “We are learning things along the way, like limitations and what needs to be prioritized first so we can stick to the timeline to finish quickly.” Previous iterations of Silver Flag were only able to support smaller classes consisting of just U.S. Airmen due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the courses are

now available to more than just U.S. members. “We recently opened classes to NATO allies and other partner countries,” Mosier said. “It is important for our allies and partners to understand how we operate, and vice-versa, when we need to recover a base after an attack.” Including allies and partners in Silver Flag allows them to support these critical war fighting requirements at their main operating and forward deployed bases, and enable agile combat employment. Synchronizing engineer forces between U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa, NATO and other partners allows them to streamline future bilateral operations. “I think this exercise is really good for us to compare how we work and how Americans work differently than us,” Dutch Solider 1st Class Jeffrey van Meerwijk, 435 CTS student, said. “It is important for us to know in case it is necessary for us to help after an attack.” Although some of the training was foreign to the students, they were still able to work together and learn how to accomplish base recovery operations in a simulated forward deployed environment.

“This is my first time being here and it is really great,” Hoffman said. “It is cool to see all the pieces moving together and be able to interact with our NATO allies and partners. This is great training and it is always awesome to work with our allied countries.”

569 USFPS, 86 AMXS raise DUI awareness Story and photos by Senior Airman John Wright 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron and 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron hosted a wet lab to raise DUI/DWI awareness at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 15. The wet lab consisted of volunteers who were provided alcohol under supervision to show the direct impact alcohol consumption has on various body compositions and the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol. “The goal here was to drive home the importance of making good decisions, being responsible and understanding how important our relationship is here with our host nation,” said Master Sgt. Teve Molioo, 86th AMXS first sergeant. The Kaiserslautern Military Community has recently seen an increase in alcohol-related incidents like DUI/DWI, including the operation of electric scooters while under the influence. “We’re teaching to bring awareness to DUIs and basically show the public and other units why we conduct Standardized Field Sobriety Tests,” said Staff Sgt. Madison Alicea, 569th USFPS unit training instructor. The 569th USFPS training instructors worked with 86th AMXS Airmen to go over SFST procedures and the proper handling of intoxicated subjects. “We conducted three tests during our DUI (training),” Alicea said. “We did the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, or HGN, the walk-and-turn test

co-worker. • The Airmen Against Drunk Driving program is available as a safety net. • Remember that operating automatic scooters while under the influence of alcohol can also result in a DUI/DWI.

and the one-legged stand. Basically we tried to obtain clues to see if that person was intoxicated.” The HGN test is based on observation of involuntary jerking movements of the eyes as they follow horizontal motion. Airmen attending the training observed HGN and other sobriety test results, witnessing firsthand the effects varying levels of alcohol consumption have on coordination and thought processing. “It’s awareness and it’s education on the effects and impacts alcohol has on their ability to operate a vehicle or ride a scooter, and, more

importantly, how a bad decision could severely impact their safety and the safety of others,” Molioo said. According to the 569th USFPS Training Section, other resources and things to remember when it comes to decreasing DUI/DWI incidents are: • Have a plan before consuming alcohol. • Have a designated driver in place. • Utilize taxi cabs and have a taxi service number saved to a phone. • Phone a friend, supervisor or

Units can also reach out to the 569th USFPS Training Section to inquire about coordinating a wet lab for DUI/DWI education and training at DSN 314-489-6311 or commercial 0631-536-6311. “I think this training is for all Airmen,” Molioo said. “It’s not immune to our noncommissioned officers, senior NCOs or officers. I think it’s across the board, to include our civilians and our active duty dependents. Alcohol has an ability to adversely affect someone’s ability to make good decisions, so have a plan and make sure you have a Wingman out there who will help you make those tough decisions.”

Story and photos by Senior Airman Thomas Karol 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Force Support Squadron hosted the 2021 Turkey Trot 5k at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 19. Runners ran a 5K to kick-off Thanksgiving celebrations and were entered in a raffle to win Turkeys, gift cards and gift baskets. They also received prizes based on placement and holiday attire. “We hosted the event because it’s a great way to get people together,” Savannah Pentek, 86 FSS recreational assistant, said. “This is the

first event we have held since the beginning of the pandemic. It is is so great to see everyone out here to have a good time.” Some participants dressed up in Thanksgiving related attire like hats, shirts and accessories for the event. One of the runners said it was a great way to put themselves out there and have a good time all in one event. “I got here pretty recently and I heard some of the people in my unit were participating,” Senior Master Sgt. Jeff Huot, 86th Healthcare Operations Squadron senior enlisted leader, said. “I fig-

ured it was a good way to network and meet some of the people from my unit. I find events like these are one of the best ways to get acclimated to a new assignment and bring in the holiday season.” For Pentek it is all about people. She expressed how happy she was to see so many participants come out and make new friends along the way. “Holidays can be a stressful time,” Pentek said. “A lot of people are away from their families so it is good to see people trying become part of the Air Force family. This is what it is all about.”

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 435th Security Forces Squadron hosted the U.S. Army Air Assault Assessment for the Kaiserslautern Military Community at the Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Nov. 18 and 19. The candidates, from the 435 SFS, 52 SFS, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron, and 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron, were tested on their physical and mental strength while completing an Army Physical Fitness Test, a 25-foot-high rope climb, and a 12-mile-long ruck march. On the first day, Airmen completed the APFT which consists of push-ups, sit-ups and a two-mile run. After the APFT, they did the rope climb. On the second day, Airmen assigned to the 435 SFS monitored the candidates during the ruck march, who had to carry at least 35 pounds of equipment and complete the 12-mile march in less than three hours. “Candidates are not only facing physical but mental fortitude throughout the ruck march,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Ulysses Ortiz, 435 SFS contingency response team leader. The Air Assault Assessment is a step in the process of attending the Sabalauski Air Assault School in Fort Campbell, Ky., a 10-day course that prepares military members for insertion, evacuation and pathfinder missions. The curriculum at the schoolhouse heavily focuses on rappelling techniques, sling load operations, and combat assault. “This is a prep course, essentially,” Ortiz said. “They needed to do this assessment so they can gauge their abilities and if they want to go to the Army Air Assault schoolhouse.” Once the Airmen pass, Air Assault qualified personnel assigned to the 435 SFS teach them everything they will see at the schoolhouse in Fort

Campbell, such as inspecting loads, Humvees and trailers. “For this course [at the schoolhouse], it will take somebody who not only has the mental fortitude, but the physical fortitude as well,” he said. “It is a very demanding course. The first day is nothing but physical exhaustion to make sure that you actually want to be there.” Airmen increasing their combat capabilities is crucial to the 435 SFS because it adds skills outside of the usual airborne operations, Ortiz said.

Story and photo by Senior Airman Branden Rae 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A noncommissioned officer from the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron was selected as Airlifter of the Week, Nov. 10, for outstanding performance above and beyond his duties, which included his position as an emergency operations center manager during Operation Allies Welcome at Ramstein Air Base. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. David Smith, 786th CES emergency management craftsman, contributed to OAW where he led 441 members, resulting in 554 tents being deployed, 1.5 million meals served, $168 million in assets utilized and 35 thousand travelers granted safe passage. “He was kind of a jack of all trades,” said Master Sgt Mark Turner, 786th CES emergency management section chief. “He fit in where we needed him for OAW. He is filling in for multiple positions, normally above his pay grade” As an emergency support function five, Smith helps facilitate all the requested tasks that come into the Emergency Operations Center by connecting the requestor with the proper person to fulfill the

requests and passing information up and down the base chain of command. During OAR he not only worked 12-hour shifts, he also volunteered his time, with his wife, to sort three thousand food items that served six hundred travels. Smith’s regular job includes managing the upkeep and the renovation of the emergency operations center for the base, which includes making sure members are fully trained and certified for emergency situations. “Honestly, my favorite part of the job is when we actually get to do what we are trained to do,” Smith said. “Managing the situation during OAW was where I enjoyed my job the most.” Work is not all that Smith does while living in Germany. He enjoys getting away on the weekends. “Traveling is definitely a big hobby while living in Germany,” Smith said. “I am also very outdoorsy. I love going hiking, running, skiing, snowboarding and staying active.” He brings that same spirit and active personality to the workplace as well. “He just has a positive attitude, no questions asked,” Turner said. “It is a pleasure to work with him.”

Austin looks to alleviate financial harm pandemic caused military families by Jim Garamone Department of Defense News The pandemic has imposed unusual hardships on the military, and Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III is taking immediate steps to alleviate the worst effects. Austin announced the moves he's taking to strengthen economic security in the armed forces. He spoke during a Pentagon news conference today. “The pandemic and tight housing markets across the country have made financial struggles (for service members and their families) even tougher,” Austin said. “With the holidays approaching, I know that this is on the minds of our military communities. And it’s certainly top of mind for me.” The challenges service members face include food insecurity, extended wait times for housing, drastically reduced housing inventories and sudden, sharp increases in rental or purchase costs for housing. A memo from Austin outlined some immediate steps the DOD will take. “The Department of Defense has temporarily raised

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III briefs media members at the Pentagon, Nov. 17.

the basic allowance for housing in areas that have had a 10% increase in rental costs this year,” he said. “And in places with housing shortages, we are extending temporary lodging expense reim-

bursements so that families have more time to find a home that fits their needs. “And when it comes to making sure our people have enough to eat, we’ve created a new toolkit

that will help leaders identify service members who are struggling and connect service members and their families to resources and support programs and more,” he continued.

The toolkit will be on Military OneSource in a new “Military Leader’s Economic Security Toolkit.” Part of the kit will help leaders identify service members struggling to feed themselves and their families and connect service members to additional resources and support programs to alleviate food insecurity. This is only the start, Austin noted. He also tasked the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness to provide a strategy and “implementation roadmap” for strengthening food security in the force within 90 days. “The steps outlined in today’s memo won’t solve all the economic worries that our military families face. But they are important steps, and we’re committed to getting this right,” the secretary said. “Men and women in uniform and their families have enough to worry about — basic necessities like food and housing shouldn’t be among them. This is a readiness issue. And that’s why I’m focused on making sure that our service members and their families have what they need to thrive, so that they can focus on the hard work of defending our nation.”

by the German-American Community Office Appropriate tires: It is important to make sure your vehicle is prepared for winter conditions. Article 2 of the German traffic regulations requires the use of suitable tires when road conditions are icy. Appropriate winter and all-season tires will have a marking indicating that they are rated as appropriate for driving in snowy and/or icy conditions. The marking is a snowflake (indicating tires suitable for snow). If you are found driving in winter conditions without the appropriate tires, you could be fined €60 and given a point against your license. If you impede traffic, the fine could be €80 and a point against your license. In case you endanger someone, the penalty could be €100 and a point against your license. If you cause an accident with the wrong tires, you could pay €120 and receive a point against your license. In addition to that, if you are involved in an accident and your vehicle is equipped with the wrong tires, your car insurance may hold you completely or partially liable for the damage. Driving in other European countries: In general, it is highly recommended to familiarize yourself with the traffic rules of the country you intend to visit. This applies even more for the winter season. by Senior Airman Thomas Karol 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs On the night of Dec. 5 German children place a boot outside their front door in hopes they are visited by an iconic figure. When they wake up on Dec. 6 they rush to the front door to find their boot is filled with treats and small toys. The figure is no other than St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas was born more than 1,700 years ago in Myra, now in modern-day Turkey. The stories about his great deeds spanned the ages of time and influenced countless people. He is said to be dressed in a red robe, a bishop's hat and a large white beard. Many confuse him with the American version of St. Nick, or Santa Claus. But, the St.

Nicholas and St. Nick are far from being the same person. According to the St. Nicholas Center, St. Nicholas is the patron saint of many groups such as sailors, merchants, brewers and children, to name a few. His legendary charitability, kindness and secret gift-giving led him to be revered all over Europe. “My daughter gets so excited when she sees the treats and little toys St. Nicholas brought them in the night,” said Anna Schindler, 86th Airlift Wing host nation advisor. “It is such a fun tradition and even though it is not as big of a celebration as Christmas it still makes her so much joy.” As well as placing treats in boots and bowls, he is known to visit

schools with a bag of goodies. The children sing him a song, and in return, he hands out the goodies. According to The National Geographic Society, he would travel with his companion Knecht Ruprecht, also known as the infamous Krampus. St. Nicholas would hand out treats to good children, and Ruprecht carried a bag to carry the naughty ones away. Today, it's a day to have fun and celebrate the man who lived so long ago. St. Nicholas day is an integral part of the German Holiday season with its own set of rich traditions known worldwide. Maybe Americans stationed here can start their own St. Nicholas traditions and continue to spread joy wherever they go.

DOD looks at ways to improve child care access by C. Todd Lopez Department of Defense News During the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenges faced by service members and their families in getting child care demonstrated just how important child care is to the military mission. And now the department is working hard to find new ways to ensure that those who need child care can get it, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for military community and family policy said. “What the pandemic did, and what it showed us was that child care is not just a ‘nice to have,’” Patricia Barron, who spoke on Tuesday as part of the Association of the U.S. Army’s “Thought Leaders” seminar, said. “You’ve got to have it. If you’re going to go to work, you’ve got to have your child care in place.” Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen H. Hicks has challenged the department, and MC&FP to uncover new and innovative ways to expand access to quality affordable child care for military families, Barron said. “We’ve been working really hard on what that could look like,” she said. “And we’ve had a couple of things that I’m very, very proud of.” Earlier this year, Barron said, the department kicked off a pilot program that allows military families to seek in-home child care providers, and the department will help pay for the cost. “Now you can hire someone that

Airmen from the 133rd Airlift Wing, along with their families and friends, take part in Family Day activities in St. Paul, Minn., Sept. 14, 2019. Photos by Tech. Sgt. Amy Lovgren

comes into your home. They still need to be vetted, and still kind of have to go through the process that we would if we were to hire anybody to work in our centers. But you hire someone that comes into your home. And we will provide you with fee assistance to help pay for their salary,” Barron said, adding she hopes the program will be expanded next year. Barron also highlighted the DOD’s “Military Child Care in your Neighborhood +” effort, which aims to get more child care providers eligible for fee-assistance by the DOD.

Right now that effort is underway in Maryland and Virginia, but Barron

said the program is expanding into other states as well.

“That’ll provide more opportunities for access to fee assistance,” she said. For parents needing short-term child care — such as a babysitter — Barron said the DOD has partnered with “Sittercity.” “If you go on to Military OneSource, we have waived the registration fee,” she said. “You can go right into the portal there and you can put in your information and a list of people will come up — and of course it’s up to you to talk to them and vet them and all of that. But they’ve had their background checks done.” Barron said both the DOD and the services are working hard to improve access to child care for military service members and their families. “There’s just never enough child care, because we have a young force,” she said. “You know, we’re always going to have young people coming in, we’re always going to have babies ... and children.”

Traveling locally:

Van camping is the way to go

by Aaron Grogg contributing writer Though camping may conjure images of backcountry wilderness and pop-up tents, there is another way to go: van camping. This is an excellent way to see Germany (or Europe) on a budget. For many of us, living in Germany meant a chance to to travel! Take a train to Paris, Berlin or Munich. Hop in the car for a short drive to Amsterdam, Prague or Brussels. Waltz away on a short flight to Barcelona, Stockholm or Rome. I mean, come on - this was supposed to be amazing! Sadly, today’s travel is not what it used to be (thanks, Covid). Tests, masks, more tests and more masks, not to mention just being around all those other people! Well, there is another way: Camping! No, camping in Germany is not quite the same as camping in the United States (pitching your tent on flat fields is no match for being among the trees in a state park), but it can still be a great way to see the country and all of its natural beauty, without having to deal with hotels and restaurants. Especially if you’re camping in a van! Vans, camping, and gearDon’t worry if you don’t have your own camping equipment! If you are looking for van or RV rentals, try searching for “camper van rentals” in your area. If you want to give tent camping a shot, Pulaski, Baumholder and Ramstein Outdoor Rec all rent tents and other equipment. And some campgrounds also offer rentals themselves, including cabins. Campgrounds everywhere As for where to go, there are a ton of drivable locations, from the Ostsee to the Nordsee, from the Eifel to the Mosel, from the

Schwarzwald to the Alps, and even just within our own RheinlandPfalz. Natural beauty and camping abound. And that’s just in Germany! France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, and Austria all have gorgeous areas to visit, and all offer camping as an option. Locating the right camping area for you For help finding camping areas, try some of these sites: • campinginfo.com - search by region, dates and type (RV or pitch) • freecampsites.net - pan around a map, set filters and more • freecamping.eu - download various apps for on-the-go searches • park4night.com - more for van camping, personal postings & reviews And yes, you read that correctly, some camping areas in Europe are actually free! Services are usually limited, of course, but you can’t argue with that price! Who needs restaurants? Another great benefit of camping is avoiding restaurants by packing and making your own meals! All you need is a cooler and all your meals are ready when you are! You might need to stop at a grocery store now and then, depending on how long you travel, but that’s no big deal. Don’t forget about gas Finally, if you are driving your own car, you probably want to use your ration gas card. To locate the nearest Esso gas station, no matter where you are, on the fly, check-out finditguide.com/esso-finder. Start with your current location, then pan the map around as you drive to update the list of stations in that area. Click any station to check their hours, services provided, and click the Get Directions button to start navigating!

Limitations on wild camping in Germany While “wild camping” (hiking into the woods and pitching your tent) is officially not allowed in Germany, many have found that by being nice, clean and orderly, no one will complain, but do so at your own risk. Open fires are strictly NOT allowed when camping in Germany. So either bring prepared foods that don’t need to be heated or bring something like a small grill.

Once offloaded they will transition from travel to operational mode ready to support Operation Atlantic Resolve.

by Maj. Vonnie Wright 21st Theater Sustainment Command VLISSINGEN, Netherlands – Aircraft and equipment from the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, arrived at the port in Vlissingen, Netherlands today as the unit began a ninemonth deployment in support of Atlantic Resolve. Approximately 40 aircraft and more than 900 equipment items will be staged at the port facility in the coming days and prepared for onward movement to locations throughout the European theater. The equipment arrived aboard the commercial cargo vessel, ARC Endurance following its journey across the Atlantic from the port in Beaumont, Texas. “The initial arrival of 1 ACB into Vlissingen is going extremely well,” said COL Joshua D. Hirsch, Commander, 598th Transportation Brigade (SDDC). “We’re executing the download of the vessel safely and on time. The port here is highly capable and we have an outstanding partnership with our allies in the Netherlands who provide a tremendous amount support for the operation.”

In addition to Vlissingen, 1 ACB is also simultaneously deploying equipment into Europe through the port located in Alexandroupoli, Greece. In total, the BDE will bring approximately 85 aircraft consisting of 12 CH-47 Chinooks, 24 AH-64 Apaches, 34 UH-60 and 15 HH-60 Black Hawks to Europe for its deployment. “The fact that we can bring a single brigade through two ports that are more than 2,600 kilometers apart demonstrates the incredible reach we now have, along with the proven ability to deploy Army combat power into ports located all across Europe,” added Hirsch. Notably, this is the first time an aviation combat brigade has deployed into the Vlissingen port. Moreover, the port will also support the re-deployment of the 1st Infantry Division, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade’s equipment as it returns to the U.S. “Vlissingen will be very busy over the next approximately 30 days as we move equipment into and out of the port,” said, Capt, Jong Lee, company commander, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command.

Members of the 1st ACB tow their equipment off the Endurance Vessel in preparation to change it from travel mode to operational mode, which allows it to be fully mission capable and ready to support Operation Atlantic Resolve.

“When you add up what we’re doing for both rotational units, our team is here to provide reception, staging and onward movement support for over 90 aircraft and approximately 2,000 total equipment items. It’s a very big mission and a great opportunity to show what we can do to move Army forces across this theater.” After training for many months, the 1 ACB’s soldiers were eager to begin their Atlantic Resolve deployment. “We are glad to arrive after multiple months of planning and preparing,” said Capt. Donald Criswell, brigade public affairs officer, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. “Our rotation to Europe will allow the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade to train alongside our allies and partners to develop, demonstrate, and improve our joint and multinational interoperability. We are stronger together with our allies and partners.” Since April 2014, U.S. Army Europe and Africa has led the Department of Defense’s Atlantic Resolve land efforts by bringing units based in the U.S. to Europe. The 1st ACB is a ready, combatcapable force that will conduct extensive bilateral, joint and multilateral training throughout its nine-month deployment in order to increase the readiness and interoperability of allied and partner forces in Europe. The ability to deploy an air cavalry brigade is a clear demonstration of the United States’ strong and unremitting commitment to NATO and the security of the European theater. Following deadlines, observing rules key to smooth postal holiday season

Chris Wells, Rhine Ordnance Barracks postal clerk, processes holiday mail for a customer at the ROB postal operations center, Nov. 18.

Story and photo by Shaylee Rawls Borcsani U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Santa isn’t the only one delivering presents this holiday season. U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz postal operations centers are assisting Santa by sending packages from Germany to areas around the world. This year’s holiday postal deadlines for packages going to the United States are quickly approaching. The recommended mailing deadlines for packages going to the U.S. are: • Nov. 27 - Retail ground mail • Dec. 11 - First class letters and cards /Priority parcels • Dec. 18 - Express Mail The deadline for packages coming from the U.S. to Germany are: • Dec. 11 - First class letters and cards /Priority parcels • Dec. 18 - Express Mail

To have a speedier trip at the post office, Scott Hamilton, garrison postal superintendent, said preparation is key before you arrive at the post office. “It is important to come to the Post Office prepared when shipping your packages,” said Hamilton. “Please fill out your customs paperwork at home online and bring a printed copy with you. Not having this form completed creates a backlog of customers trying to ship their packages and will slow you down.” The post office is still looking for seasonal employees at Baumholder, Kleber, Landstuhl, and Sembach. Please contact your local post office

for more information. The U.S. Postal Service also has online services to prepay shipping costs. “You can use Click-N-Ship or our sanctioned business partners Stamps.com and Pirateship.com to pay for packages,” said Hamilton. “Coming to the finance window with the items pre-paid is a faster and easier process.” Before packing your items, you must first make sure they follow all customs and Army post office regulations. Do not send or receive the following items: • Alcohol, coffee and tobacco products • Ammunition, firearms and fireworks • Counterfeit items • Kinder eggs • Medication (including over-thecounter, vitamins and nutritional supplements) • Plant products, for example items like mushrooms and onions • Poultry, meat and milk products and products containing their bi-products • Unconstitutional literature “The most common incoming violation we see are packages containing supplements,” said Jesse Bond, U.S. Army customs inspector. “This includes protein powders, pre-workout products, dietary supplements, melatonin and natural nutritional supplements” Dog and cat food containing poultry, meat or milk bi-products are also a violation of customs regulations. “We often see people getting

pet food sent to their APO,” said Bond. “These items, especially cat food, contain meat and poultry biproducts. This is the same for items like beef jerky and soups. Please tell the person sending you packages that you cannot receive items that have poultry, meat or milk or their bi-products.” Coffee is a rationed item but regulation allows you to mail it to the U.S. under certain circumstances. “Coffee is a rationed item and you cannot receive it through the APO in Germany,” said Bond. “You send coffee back if it was not purchased using your rations, so coffee you buy on the economy can be sent in packages going stateside.” Per customs regulations, items sent to the U.S. valued at more than $100 are subject to duty and customs processing fees that only the recipient can pay. A popular holiday gift are wooden nativity scenes. Customs regulations state that wooden items containing moss, bark, wood and untreated straw are restricted items that cannot be sent to the U.S. “Nativity scenes that are made of finished wood, plastic or have straw that is lacquered or commercially cleaned are able to be sent,” said Bond. “Items that contain natural wood or moss can contain insects that are harmful to the American ecosystem.” “We want people to have a smooth experience when sending and receiving packages,” said Hamilton. “Please make sure your packages meet all customs regulations and please have your customs form filled out before visiting the post office”

Military teens, mental health: Here are resources that can help by Katie Lange Department of Defense News If you’re a military teen, you know there are ups and downs to living the lifestyle that comes with your parents’ career. While some of the challenges are standard for a teen, others — such as dutystation moves, school transitions and deployments — can really put a strain on your mental health. While DOD Military Community and Family Policy experts acknowledge that challenges will always exist for military teens, there are programs and resources available to help them get through tough times. Since not all military families know about these resources, we thought we would highlight some important ones here. We’ll also detail coping mechanisms some military teens have told us they used on their own mental health journeys. Nonmedical counseling Elena Ashburn, a high school senior based in Florida, moved to a new high school for her sophomore year. It wasn’t easy. “It was so hard for me to go from a place and people I loved so much to a totally new and different environment that didn’t feel as accepting,” the 18-year-old said. “I’ve moved four or five times before that, and I’ve never struggled as much as I did with that one.”

Ashburn’s family sought out a therapist for her through a private practice; however, parents can also get nonmedical counseling for their teens through military resources, regardless of whether they live on- or offbase. Teens can be connected with mental health providers through Military OneSource and with the help of Military and Family Life Counselors. MFLCs are professionals trained to help recognize teens who are struggling and help them make meaningful connections. “Quite often, we find that the challenges that teens using these services are facing are around relationships and behavioral issues,” said Eddy Mentzer, the acting director for DOD Military Community Support Programs. “[MFLCs] can really get to the heart of the challenges that they’re facing.” MFLCs work at installation family support centers, child development centers and within many youth and teen programs. They’re also available at DoDEA and public schools that have a high concentration of militaryconnected students. They have a duty to warn others if they think an individual might cause harm to his/herself or others. Outside of that obligation, though, meetings with MFCLs are confidential; they don’t keep notes or report the people with whom they meet.

Ashburn was not aware of the MFLC program; however, she said her therapist has done wonders for her mental health. She’s also found that art, music and writing have been avenues to help her cope by expressing herself and collaborating with friends. Meanwhile, Ashburn met Matthew Oh, another high school senior, their freshman year at a public school in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Both are outspoken, but they believe they’re in the minority as teens. “Elena and I are very confident when it comes to talking about ourselves and talking about what’s going on in our lives, but for a lot of people, that’s not the case,” Oh said. “A lot of our peers are the type who would just keep it to themselves if given the option and try to deal with it themselves.” While MFLCs and other professionals are trained to identify, understand and respond to various mental health conditions, the DOD is looking to expand that training to others. Ganote said a youth mental health first aid course will be implemented across the force in early 2022. It will teach front-line youth development professionals how to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health issues and how to start nonjudgmental conversations with those who might be at risk. “We’re going to be providing them with the training to give our staff the confidence and the tools to ask a very powerful question:

How can I help?” explained Dianna Ganote, a program analyst for the DOD Office of Children, Youth and Families. Regardless of the avenue used to get help, Oh said it’s important for teens to find their voice. “Expressing yourself and releasing your emotions is crucial to surviving military life,” he said. “ Don’t bottle up your troubles. Release them in a form that’s comfortable to you.” Relocation-related help Continuity is key for teens who have moved multiple times, and the School Liaison Program can be vital to bridging any gaps that might arise. Every installation has at least one school liaison who can connect transitioning students with peer sponsors. They can also help them sort out school-related transition issues, such as credit transfers or getting onto a sports team that’s already begun its season. The school liaisons are wellversed in the Military Interstate Children’s Compact, which all 50 states and the DOD have signed to help smooth out these transitional bumps. Many parents don’t know about the school liaison program. If they did, experts said some of their transition-related concerns, such as a student not getting credit for a particular subject, could be resolved with a phone call or email from the school liaison to the school’s administrator. School liaisons are well-con-

Peer-to-peer connections Military installations host 223 youth and teen centers worldwide. Each one aims to create opportunities for physical, mental and social growth in the children who attend their various programs, which include sports and fitness activities, recreational programs, specialty camps, classes and youth sponsorships. For teens who live far from base and don’t have great access to youth centers, various partners have stepped in to fill the gap. Nationally, 4H and the Boys & Girls Club of America have partnerships with the DOD. BGCA offers a Military Youth Outreach program, which funds memberships for students who live off-base, including those in rural areas and inner cities. Installations often work with a host of local resources, as well. Victor Oluwagbemi, whose mother is an Air Force veteran and still works for the service as a civilian, is an outspoken advocate for youth mental health through BGCA. As a child, Oluwagbemi went to an on-base elementary school. He said his youth center was critical in helping him build a strong support system. “It was hard to develop long lasting relationships with my peers because everyone would constantly move away, but I stayed in the same place,” Oluwagbemi explained, noting that his mother was a civilian by then. “After being introduced to the Fort Dix youth programs, I was able to cope with that separation. I put my energy into clubs, making friends and finding new passions like volunteering. The youth center was the perfect resource to help me enjoy life without worrying about being alone.”

nected with off-base school administrators. Even if you live an hour from your closest installation, they should still be able to help. “We want people to know these programs exist so they will tap into them in the hopes that they will make these challenges a little bit easier to overcome,” Mentzer said.

December 3, 2021 “I used the youth centers on base many times,” said Ashburn, who was homeschooled until high school. “That was a great way for me to meet other homeschooled military kids. I always had a great time.” In 2020, youth centers kept more than 580,000 kids connected through the pandemic using virtual programming, DOD experts said. The year prior, more than 850,000 children used the youth centers. Military Kids Connect is another platform for youth to connect with their peers before and after a move. You can also search for various installation resources at https:// installations.militaryonesource.mil/ search?program-service=12/viewby=ALL. Learning to adapt School-related extracurricular activities are another way students can make connections and get acclimated — although those can still require some adaptation. “When I got here, it was very lonely and isolating,” Oh said of his move to South Korea his sophomore year. “This DoDEA school didn’t have the same opportunities as I was used to in the states. It made it really hard to plug into a community as I had been able to do in the past.” Oh, a self-described “music kid,” made friends at his prior school during a summertime band camp. He tried to recreate that culture in Korea, but the dynamic there just didn’t match. He said he was forced to “reshape his perspective” using that resilience that military teens are so used to hearing about. Eventually, he got a drumline going. “It’s not what I’m used to, but it’s still fun,” the 17-year-old said. “You have to keep your mind open and explore new opportunities. If you don’t do that — if you don’t adapt — you’re going to be left behind.” Ashburn agreed. She said the best way she has made connections was by trying new things. “I’ve thrown myself into things within my school because I knew that these were the kids I was going to be around for the next two to three years,” she said. Ashburn also turned to online extracurriculars to bridge the opportunity gap in her new, fast-paced

school. “It’s a way that I can continue working on things that I love without having to worry about moving and leaving something behind, because it’ll always be here,” said Ashburn, who, along with Oh, helped co-found Bloom, a group meant to empower, highlight and connect military teens across the globe. Dealing with deployment Military kids often have to say goodbye to a parent who has to deploy for an extended period of time, which can be very difficult, especially for teens. Military OneSource offers 15 tips to help teens cope at a https://www.militaryonesource. mil/family-relationships/parentingand-children/parenting-throughdeployment/15-tips-for-helping-yourteenager-deal-with-deployment/. Ashburn said her dad has deployed for a total of 15 months, not including two-week trainings, while Oh’s dad has had two major deployments. Both said their families leaned on relatives and their community during those times. “For the first deployment, my aunt came to live with us. For the second, we were fortunate to be stationed in my mom’s home state of Hawaii, so we had a lot of family nearby,” Oh said.

The nonmedical counseling mentioned above is also recommended for teens struggling with deployments. Domestic violence concerns Some teens have also experienced some form of domestic violence in their lives. The Family Advocacy Program, which can be found at every installation, is available to help with concerns about domestic or child abuse and problematic sexual behavior in youths. There’s also the victim’s assistance directory that gives the numbers to several 24/7 hotlines available in each state. And always remember — the National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached at 800-799-7233 or 800-787-3224 en Español. If calling isn’t an option, you can chat live at https://www.thehotline.org, or text “START” to 88788. Not sure where to look? Call an expert Yes — we know there are a LOT of resources to filter through on Military OneSource. If you’re ever overwhelmed or not sure what to look for on the site, remember that you can call 800-342-9647, too. OneSource triage specialists will listen to your personal challenges and direct you to the resources that exist.

WINTER FOREST from Page 1 Winter hiking and snowshoeing are excellent activities for those of you who are not into skiing or snowboarding and want to keep up your fitness levels while checking out amazing scenery, tasting schnapps and local food specialties along the way, visiting landmarks, and seeing a variety of wildlife and plants that thrive throughout the winter months. Below are four routes for you to start enjoying nature in the colder months. Gipfelrauschen Hike This hike begins at the Hunsrueckhaus located next to the Erbeskopf ski slope. The clearly marked trails lead you through dense spruce and fir forest areas with a variety of wide open spaces to narrow footpaths and nature preservation areas. It then takes a few upward spiral turns and drops back into a valley path that leads you to the Gipfel (peak) platform which is the highest point in the region. From the Gipfel you have a view of the hills, valleys, and villages for several kilometers in every direction. The path from the Gipfel leads you down to your start point at the Hunsrueckhaus where you can recharge and warm up with an amazing soup of the day, local schnapps, local food specialties, and visit the nature museum and souvenir shop. • Start point: Hunsrueckhaus am Erbeskopf, 54411 Deuselbach • Distance: 7.5 km • Time estimate: 3 hrs • Experience: Excellent • Terrain: Various flat and steep areas • Difficulty Rating: Moderate to dif ficult. Not stroller or small child friendly. • Detailed info: www.erbeskopf.de

Wind, Wasser & Wacken Hike The Wind, Water, and Rock trail is an excellent environmental education hike for adults, school groups, and anyone who wants to get out and enjoy a day crossing streams, meadows, and trekking along thick forest paths in the Hardtwald forest near Thalfang. The theme is climate protection, energy conservation through the use of wind and water power in the region, and also focuses on geology. Along the way you encounter windmills, underground springs, mineral wells, a dark narrow oak forest area, and the Berger Wacken geological area. All areas have informational signs posted, and there are a variety of rest stops along the way for a picnic lunch and snacks. Just below the start point in the village of Thalfang you will find a variety of restaurants and cafes to enjoy local food and drink specialties, as well as grocery stores and shops just in case you forgot to pack something for your day out on the trail. • Start point: Wanderparkplatz, “Huns rücker Windweg,” junction K77 / K76, 54426 Heidenburg / Berglicht • Distance: 10.1 km • Time estimate: 3 ½ hrs • Experience: Excellent • Terrain: Wide open meadows, narrow trails, creek crossings, dense forest • Difficulty Rating: Easy to moderate. Not stroller or small child friendly • Detailed info: www.erbeskopf.de Baerenbachpfad Hike The Baumholder community is often regarded by many as a place that they are stuck in with nothing to do and nowhere to go locally, especially during winter. However, there are many adventures just minutes away from post and the housing

areas. The Baerenbachfad (bear stream path) hiking trail takes you on a very quiet and peaceful journey by streams, rock formations, waterfalls, through meadows, fields, and forest areas with amazing panoramic views. Take advantage of the many rest stops along the trail for a picnic lunch or to get a glimpse of the many inhabitants of this wellpreserved forest region. The old town of Baumholder has a variety of small cafes and restaurants where you can find local specialties as well as American, Italian, and Asian restaurants. • Start point: Am Weiherdamm 1, 55774 Baumholder • Distance: 14 km • Time estimate: 4.5 hrs • Experience: Excellent • Terrain: Excellent • Difficulty Rating: Moderate, not stroller or small child friendly • Detailed info: www.baumholder.de Feldberg Although I’ve been snowboarding and skiing for many years, snowshoeing is a way for me to mix up my activities while avoiding crowded slopes, long ticket and lift lines, and hauling a bunch of equipment around. This very popular sport does not require hours of lessons, is very easy to learn, has a low injury risk factor, is inexpensive, and a great way to relieve stress, the winter blues, burn excess holiday calories, and spend quality family time outdoors. One of my favorite snowshoe adventures start at the House of Nature adjacent to the Feldberg ski lift. All trails are clearly marked, and you can get a trail map for free or hire a guide for an additional fee. Although some of the trails can be a bit challenging while trekking through

deep snow, it is worth the extra effort to experience the panoramic views, crisp mountain air, and taking a break at one of many mountain huts and lodges to relax and recharge. They offer the best local specialties that include Black Forest smoked ham, sausages, cake, cherry schnapps, beer and wine. Some of them also have overnight accommodations. The House of Nature in Feldberg offers regular guided snowshoe tours as well as snowshoe rental. Based on snow conditions, tours are provided every Sunday from December till March at noon. • Start point: Haus der Natur, Dr. Pilet Spur 1, 79868 Feldberg • Distance: 12.5 km • Time estimate: 5 hrs • Experience: Excellent • Terrain: Deep snow and slippery at places • Difficulty Rating: Moderate to difficult. Not stroller or small child friendly. • Detailed info: www.hochschwarzwald.de What to bring: Sturdy hiking shoes or boots, gaiters to keep snow out of your footwear, allweather clothing that includes layers, water, snacks, first aid kit, toilet paper, sunscreen, phone or GPS and Euro. Most remote huts and rest areas do not accept plastic. Dos and Don’ts: • Stay on the trails to avoid disturbing wildlife and eco systems. • Keep your pets in control and clean up after them. • Take frequent breaks based on your ability level. • Research and rent snowshoes before purchasing them. • Constantly check weather conditions and know where to go for shelter.
