General Breedlove becomes 35th USAFE commander by Master Sgt. Brian Bahret USAFE Public Affairs Gen. Philip M. Breedlove took command of U.S. Air Forces in Europe from Gen. Mark A. Welsh III today in a change of command ceremony on Ramstein. Presiding over the ceremony, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz praised Welsh’s past accomplishments and Breedlove’s future potential as the commander of USAFE, Allied Air Command Ramstein and U.S. Air Forces Africa. “These two men are quintessential Air Force leaders — innovative, forward looking and strategically oriented,” Schwartz said. “They are both Airmen’s Airmen — one an incumbent commander and the other eager and incoming. Both are exactly the kind that we need to serve at the helm of the United States Air Forces in Europe as the command conducts its very important mission.” USAFE is an Air Force major command and is the air component for two See COMMAND, Page 6

Members of the KMC start the Viking Challenge hosted by the KMC 5/6 club July 27 and 28 at the Pulaski Park track. The Viking Challenge is a rain or shine 24-hour run/walk-a-thon that raises money for the Fisher House located on Landstuhl Regional Medical Center as well as other organizations around the KMC.

“Singing in the rain … (we) are singing in the rain,” was just one of the many chants heard during this year’s Viking Challenge held July 27 and 28 at the Pulaski Park track. The fund-raiser was hosted by the KMC 5/6, a private organization that comprises KMC staff and technical sergeants who provide mentorship to NCOs. Starting with sweltering 94-degree heat then some light showers, the elements did not seem to slow the teams. “We are out here rain or shine every summer and every year it is a great event,” said KMC 5/6 chairman Tech. Having the honor to serve by Col. Margaret Walsh 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron have the honor to serve as the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron commander. In that capacity, it has been my pleasure to share the uniqueness of the U.S. aeromedical evacuation system with numerous visitors, as well as with colleagues from partner countries. I routinely use just those words, “honor to serve,” when I introduce myself and have reflected on their meaning. While the phrase may be considered to be common in the military community, it is no less profound, and I wanted to share a few aspects of my reflection. First, turning to the Cambridge dictionary, the noun “honor” means a quality that combines respect, being proud and honesty. It is the perfect word to illustrate my feelings of the people and their dedication to complete our squadron’s mission. My squadron provides nursing care and transports sick, injured and wounded service members

and beneficiaries. On a recent aeromedical flight, a patient shared his opinion of my flight nurse role. “You have the coolest job,” the patient said. Of course, I agreed. While aeromedical evacuation is a particularly visible role, there are numerous mundane, behind the scenes tasks that are critical for the safe execution of each flight. Regardless of recognition, each job in the military is essential, and all service members must complete their duties to the best of their abilities for success. For me, honor is not limited to a unit-level perspective, rather it extends to all men and women who have taken the military oath upon which our service was founded. Honor is an apt noun related to military service, however, it can also be used as a verb and be bestowed. Americans honor military personnel and their service. As recipients of such honor, all military personnel are charged with the responsibility of preserving it. Military service is not just a job, but a duty to protect our coun-

try 24/7. The actions rendered in the completion of that duty are accountable to the public to whom we serve. Furthermore, each member is a representative to advance or damage the public’s trust and confidence by their acts. Choices individuals make on and off duty create the military face to the public. Service core values are the foundation of the military lifestyle and behaviors exhibiting adherence to these values are key to what separates military service from any other job. Let us shift from honor to ponder on the word “serve.” One definition of serve is to work for or to carry out your duty. While the work concept is a natural link to the military, in order to be focused and efficient to carry out duties, balance is required. In the Air Force, this is termed resiliency and is divided into four realms: physical, spiritual, social and mental. Military service demands physical fitness, mental strength and financial security, while forging family and social bonds, as well as internal and spiritual serenity.

Military service also extends beyond the individual. Serve can also be defined as: help, spend time and help achieve. Pivotal to serving in the military is the ability to serve one another. This embodies the wingman concept. Here, each Airman actively seeks to identify threats/dangers and assist one another both on and off duty. This is more than a slogan, rather a genuine interest and interaction with fellow service members, and ranges from mentoring individuals to asking the tough questions like, “Are you considering suicide?” This type of wingman extends to families, particularly of deployed personnel. True service is not limited to duties but actions to care for and develop one another. Honor to serve extends beyond an individual perspective to include the responsibility of all military members to preserve it as well as service to the country and each other. I am honored to serve beside such dedicated professionals. What does “honor to serve” mean to you? Are you honored to serve?

My job is prosecuting sexual assault by Col. Don M. Christensen Government trial and appellate counsel chief WASHINGTON — Here’s a simple truth: sexual offenders reject our core values of integrity, service and excellence in favor of following their own base, undisciplined, criminal desires. Most sexual assaults committed by Airmen are “blue on blue,” or Airmen victimizing other Airmen. So, in addition to rejecting our core values, these undisciplined Airmen reject the wingman concept that we prize in the Air Force.

irmen, civilians and host nation members of the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing welcomed their new commander in a ceremony July 30 in Hangar 5 on Ramstein. Col. Randall Reed assumed command of the 521st AMOW from Col. Kip Turain during a ceremony officiated by Maj. Gen. William J. Bender, U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center commander. “He brings many talents, gifts of expertise, judgment, presence and wisdom,” Bender said. “He is ready to take on the mantle of command to lead the 521st to new heights. Colonel Reed’s career has prepared him well for assuming command today.” Before arriving at Ramstein, he served as commander of the 379th Expeditionary Operations Group in Southwest Asia. “Men and women of the 521st, a change of command ceremony is as much about recognizing you — the service members, civilians and families — as it is about the outgoing and incoming commanders,” Reed said. “Together, our future will be equally exciting. I want you to know it is a great honor to serve with you and an equally greater honor to lead you. You have my all. You have my best.” ASSAULT, from Page 2

435th AGOW welcomes new command chief I tell them four things that I think will make them successful. 1. Be credible. Meaning they need to understand their job, inside and out. They need to be technical experts. 2. Be approachable. Other Airmen in the wing must feel comfortable coming to them and expressing their feelings without repercussions. 3. Be aggressive. Not toward each other, but with their tasks. 4. Be humble. Humility is a big attribute that our Airmen need to have.

by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Members of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing greeted their new command chief, Chief Master Sgt. Eduardo Mireles, who has already been a part of their team for a month. As the command chief, Mireles advises the 435th AGOW commander on all enlisted matters as the highest level of enlisted leadership. Mireles discussed his role in the 435th AGOW and his return to the wing. What’s it like to be back in Germany? I’m very excited to be back. I was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, in 2007 as the chief enlisted manager for the 4th Air Support Operations Group, which is now a part of this wing. Over the past two years I’ve noticed how the unit is running a lot smoother, as the wing has established itself. The wing is more efficient now because there is a better understanding of how to support our groups and squadrons. As a whole, we’re all over the world now, and we have a bigger impact on world events. How did it feel to be selected as the 435th AGOW command chief? It’s very exciting to come back and be the 435th AGOW’s command chief. It is a privilege and an honor to be selected for this position. I am very proud of the mission and of our Airmen. I just can’t say enough about them, the amount of deployments, whether here in European Command or in Central Command is unbelievable. We have a very high (operations) tempo, yet the morale in this wing is perhaps the highest I’ve seen in any unit. COMMAND, from Page 1

Department of Defense unified commands — U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command. As the air component, USAFE directs air operations in a theater spanning three continents, covering more than 19 million square miles, containing 105 independent states and possessing more than a quarter of the world’s population and more than a quarter of the world’s Gross Domestic Product. Schwartz said Breedlove, who is USAFE’s 35th commander, played an instrumental role in leading the Air Force during his tenure as the Air Force’s vice chief of staff. A command pilot with more than 3,500 hours, Breedlove has served in six command positions since earning his commission in June 1977. “You have demonstrated your effectiveness as a commander and a leader,” Schwartz said. “You have gained the experience and the genuine credibility to back it all up.” Breedlove’s experience will prove invaluable during his tenure as USAFE commander, Schwartz said. “We look forward to your incred-

Chief Master Sgt. Eduardo Mireles

What are some priorities and goals for your tenure as command chief? One of my biggest priorities is my Airmen. Getting back to the basics, getting to know our Airmen, I think we need to get back to the faceto-face leadership. To make sure we understand what our Airmen are concerned about. I believe in General Welsh’s philosophy of every Airman has a story, we just need to listen to them. By getting down to that level, it will make our wing that much better because we understand our Airmen. What is some advice you would give to your Airmen?

ible leadership — to your ‘mission first, people always’ approach, which emphasizes empowerment and inspires success, all the while demanding performance,” he said. Breedlove has served nearly a third of his 33-year career in USAFE with assignments in Spain, Italy, and Germany and said he and his wife welcome the new assignment. “Cindy and I feel like we are coming home,” he said. “I’m glad to be back.” Additionally, Breedlove acknowledged USAFE’s NATO partners and the past relationships they developed. “I’m really excited to be a part of this team,” he said to the more than 700 service members and allied partners attending the ceremony. “I look forward to working with you as we continue to shape NATO airpower to support our joint force.” He said since departing Ramstein in 2009 as the 3rd Air Force commander, he watched the growth of the command and its partners. “You all have done so much since I left,” Breedlove said. “I watched you with pride. You were amazing and your reputation for excellence now is

What’s one highlight of your career? The opportunity to lead a squadron for the first time was important to me. Being a squadron superintendent is one of the most tasking jobs in the Air Force for enlisted Airmen. As a superintendent your main mission is to train, equip and organize. But it’s also to listen and take care of the Airmen. As squadron superintendent taking care of 150 to 200 people you’re very busy, always trying to take care of the mission and the Airmen. I think that molded me into the person I am today, by making me a better senior NCO and definitely a better chief. Who was there to guide you along the way? I always had individuals I felt comfortable going to for help. I can remember as a young Airman there were always mentors I went to for advice. As I got older and more mature I started focusing on one specific mentor — Chief Master Sgt. Mark Villella, who ended up being a command chief. Throughout my career he was always the one I went to for advice or guidance. He was a very good mentor and one I still go to today.

“I’m really excited to be a part of this team. I look forward to working with you as we continue to shape NATO airpower to support our joint force.” — Gen. Philip M. Breedlove worldwide. I’m so proud to be back as a part of the leadership of this team.” Welsh and Breedlove share a camaraderie that began when they were stationed together as young lieutenants in the late ’70s at Williams Air Force Base, Ariz. “He brings a passion to this work and a commitment to teamwork that you are going to admire,” said Welsh, who, if confirmed, will take over as Air Force chief of staff from Schwartz, who is scheduled to retire in August. Under Welsh’s leadership, USAFE has flourished in the range of its achievement and the scope of its impact, said Schwartz, who presented Welsh with the Defense Distinguished Service Medal first oak leaf cluster. Schwartz said Welsh’s experience

at each level of command has provided a foundation for success as USAFE commander, and to the command’s invaluable support to operations Enduring Freedom, New Dawn, Nomad Shadow and Odyssey Dawn and its NATO partners. Giving credit to Betty Welsh for her efforts, Schwartz said the two Welshs will make significant contributions to the Air Force’s future. “All of these experiences have not only developed a highly regarded and highly effective, yet humble and grounded leadership team, they also serve as exemplars of judgment, performance and results, which give us deep confidence in their abilities and offer an entirely optimistic outlook for the future of our Air Force should the Senate confirm his nomination as CSAF,” Schwartz said.

US Army NATO Brigade welcomes new leadership, says goodbye to Schwetzingen by Sgt. 1st Class John S. Wollaston U.S. Army NATO Brigade Public Affairs SCHWETZINGEN CASTLE, Germany — On the grounds of this ancient castle just outside of Heidelberg, the U.S. Army NATO Brigade bid farewell to not only it’s commander for the past two years, Col. BJ Constantine, but to the Heidelberg area and Tomkins Barracks specifically in a combination change of command, change of responsibility and casing of the colors ceremony. “It seems like only yesterday I stood in a ceremony on Tompkins Barracks to assume command of this brigade. In fact, the date was July 27, 2010,” Constantine said during his farewell comments. “I am honored and humbled to have been associated with this fine organization and the Soldiers, civilian team members and family members that are the USANATO Brigade.” Also during his remarks, Constantine praised the brigade’s Soldiers for their hard work and dedi-

cation to the mission as well as his battalion command teams in Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. “I could not have asked for a better team of leaders. I am continually impressed by your professionalism, your passion, your stamina, and your loyalty to me and your Soldiers,” Constantine said. “Thank you for all you continue to do to lead, train and care for your Soldiers and their families.” This was Constantine’s second time commanding within U.S. Army NATO. Previously, he was the battalion commander for the Allied Forces North Battalion in the Netherlands. Taking over the reins of a brigade that encompasses 37 separate locations in 14 countries is Col. Robert S. Larsen. He’s no stranger to this area of Germany as he previously served in U.S. Army Europe as the director of the USAEUR chorus. “I am humbled and realize I have been given much, and much is expected,” Larsen said about taking over the brigade. “I assure you, I am here to serve you.” As the brigade colors were passed

from outgoing to incoming, at the same time and almost unnoticed, Command Sgt. Maj. Mark K. Schindler quietly stepped to the side and allowed his replacement, Command Sgt. Maj. Joanne M. Cox, to take his place and receive the colors from Larsen, completing the change of the brigade command team. “Today does not truly allow me to thank everyone who has made a real difference during our stay in this great unit,” Schindler said. “This ceremony is not just about the celebration of who we are in the U.S. Army, but also a celebration of the unit we serve, U.S. Army NATO.” Cox comes to the brigade from the Second Infantry Division in Fort Lewis, Wash., and is no stranger to U.S. Army NATO either, having previously served as the battalion command sergeant major for the AFNORTH battalion in Brunssum, the Netherlands. “I am honored to have been selected to serve with and for the leaders, Soldiers, civilians, family members and partners of U.S. Army NATO,” Cox said during her remarks. “I will carry forward the positive, capa-

ble leadership provided by CSM Schindler as we adapt to the evolving NATO mission.” The final piece to this late afternoon ceremony was bittersweet. After 65 years of the U.S. Army and its Soldiers and families calling Schwetzingen home, the U.S. Army NATO Brigade cased its colors, officially marking the start of the brigade’s move to its new home at Sembach Kaserne and becoming part of the KMC. U.S. Army NATO Commander Maj. Gen. James C. Boozer thanked the local leaders in attendance for their support of the U.S. military over the last six decades. “To the leaders and citizens of Schwetzingen, thank you. Thank you for over 65 years of friendship and hospitality to U.S. Army forces in Germany, for embracing and sharing your beautiful city with us,” he said. “It’s hard to believe we won’t be making anymore memories here with our friends.” The first Soldiers from the NATO brigade are scheduled to begin moving into their new building on Sembach by the middle of August.

Munitions Airmen find new way to train by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen with the 86th Munitions Squadron have a new method of training for their mission, recently developed by Master Sgt. Daniel Clark, NCOIC of munitions storage. They use the inside of a bay that is set up like a normal warehouse, where Airmen practice storing/looking for various assets. The 86th MUNS is respon-

sible for storing, maintaining and shipping those assets to various bases and to each area they are responsible for. “This training bay allows us to train our new personnel without the use of live assets,” said Staff Sgt. Marc Hobdy, 86th MUNS crew chief supervisor. “For our more seasoned personnel, this bay allows us to retrain and identify discrepancies out in the area. We bring those things back to this bay so we can teach our Airmen and eliminate those errors.” The training bay offers the

accountability required when working with munitions. “Our job requires 100 percent accountability, which we practice for by using this bay,” said Senior Airman Tadd Meyer, 86th MUNS crew chief. “Every asset has a number, which tells us where that specific item is when we look it up in our system.” The identification number makes it easier for Airmen when performing their monthly inventory. “We can complete a check relatively quickly, as long as everything is in the right

position,” Meyer said. “We account for what our system says we have once a month. We even place traps to test if our personnel are taking the proper steps while performing these checks.” Issues that don’t get corrected during the monthly checks are taken to the training bay to make sure they get caught the next time. “If left unnoticed, those ‘traps’ would be reported and used for training in the training bay,” Meyer said. “We don’t try to mess anyone up on purpose. We just need to

ensure that everyone is doing what they’re supposed to.” This training is there to prevent potential dangers, like missing munitions which could lead to punishment for munitions Airmen. “If there was an incident where munitions were unaccounted for, a ripple effect would take place,” Meyer said. “If the lost asset couldn’t be accounted for, everyone from the crew chiefs to commanders would be in trouble. To make sure this doesn’t happen, we take training seriously.”

Cadets discover new opportunities through Ops AF Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Hailey Haux 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein hosted two groups of six U.S. Air Force Academy cadets over the past two months for Operation Air Force 2012. Ops AF provides both USAFA and AF Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets with experience in the operational Air Force while focusing on different areas of cadet development. “Before coming to Ramstein, I was expecting it to be more German,” said Cadet 2nd Class Kathryn Lopez, USAFA cadet. “Now that I’m here, this base is like a little slice of America.” While here, each group toured several different squadrons to get an idea of the types of jobs available to them. “I have always wanted to be a pilot,” said Cadet 2nd Class Claire Bieber, USAFA cadet. “Getting to see all my options was great, but this trip solidified me wanting to be a pilot.” Jam packed with a number of things to do and places to see, the cadets took a tour of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the contingency aeromedical staging facility, the fire station, the German Buechel Air Base, a castle in Landstuhl and received a C-130J Super Hercules incentive flight. “The incentive flight was great,” said Cadet 2nd Class Brooke Bagdasar, USAFA cadet. “We were able to talk to the pilots and get their perspective on

what their job is like.” During their time here, the cadets went into Kaiserslautern to meet up with their German counterparts. “The Ops Air Force ‘Host Nation Day’ was a rousing success,” said Maj. Christopher Bender, officer in charge of Ops AF. “Our day spent with our host nation counterparts was very pleasant and it was wonderful opportunity to foster the proud and lasting relationship between our nations.” After touring the castle in Landstuhl, the first group of cadets ate lunch at the restaurant while discussing the events of the day. “This has been an amazing experience,” Lopez said. “It was weird seeing how old everything is, but the Roman symbols and the caverns were cool.” Visiting Ramstein and seeing everything the Air Force has to offer, the cadets had a lot to think about. “Before coming here I was struggling with wanting to be a pilot or apply for medical school,” Bagdasar said. “After going to the hospital in Landstuhl, I found that being a surgeon is my dream. I am passionate about aiding wounded warriors and am now dead-set on going to medical school.” Getting a feel for how the operational Air Force works was the experience of a lifetime and one that will never be forgotten, Bieber said. Toward the end of their visit, the cadets thanked everyone for the time they took out of their work

Spangdahlem’s SciFi Con needs participation by Staff Sgt. Daryl Knee 52nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany — A free science fiction convention takes place from noon to 6 p.m. Nov. 3 at Club Eifel here. The base SciFi Con will allow people interested in science fiction in any form of media a chance to meet, greet and share their enthusiasm. This convention will include role-playing and computer game demonstrations, people in costumes, prizes and giveaways, and other activities. “My motto has always been, ‘Go big or go home,’” said Jarrod Garceau, 52nd Force Support Squadron and event coordinator. “I’m going to do everything in my power to make this a huge success.” This is Garceau’s 10th such event at Spangdahlem, with his most recent being Comic Con earlier this year

and a “Star Wars” convention in 2011. Both events had more than 600 people attend, and he anticipates more for SciFi Con since the convention encompasses all aspects of science fiction and fantasy. “It’s a wonderful program,” he continued. “There’s nothing like it in the rest of the Air Force. Spangdahlem is special — no other base has events like these.” Garceau said he intends to organize the event much like his previous ones, where he awards custom-made coins for the attendees who show up first and announces prizes throughout the day. However, for this convention, there may be a surprise or two. Garceau has invited 29 SciFi celebrities — actors, artists and directors — to the event, and most have answered saying they are interested in touring this area of Europe. The final list of guests is being withheld until confirmation of their visit. Other confirmed guests will

include members of the 501st Legion, a worldwide “Star Wars” costume organization, and Act Eifel, the base’s premiere theater group. “I highly recommend going to the SciFi convention,” said Tech. Sgt. Jonathan Graham, 606th Air Control Squadron assistant NCO in charge data maintenance and attendee of other Spangdahlem conventions. “I can pretty much

guarantee that it will be a hit.” Graham said he enjoys the atmosphere of conventions and the ability to connect with people of similar interests. The attendees share a certain sense of camaraderie in these types of venues. The date for the SciFi Con is more than three months away, but Garceau said he needs volunteers and additional coordinators now to

ensure the venue is as successful as it can be. To volunteer for the event, email Garceau directly at jarrod.garceau@spangdahlem. People may also RSVP by visiting the SciFi Con Facebook page at events/402866159765386. Garceau said that there may be more prizes and funding as more people RSVP.

Physical therapy treats Airmen’s aches, pains Story and photo by Tech Sgt. Chad Thompson 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

veryone has been through something in life where they needed a helping hand to get them back on their feet. Whether it’s recovering from a broken bone or surgical procedure, a sprain or strain, runner’s knee, sore feet or a bad back — physical therapy can help. A physical therapist’s role is helping a patient relieve pain through flexibility, strengthening key muscle groups and ensuring proper joint alignment when performing tasks. “The key concepts … for injury prevention are using proper body mechanics and alignment,” said Maj. Linda Schemm, 86th Medical Group physical therapy flight commander. For example, making sure one’s knees and hips are aligned while walking, running or performing an exercise can help prevent injury, Schemm said. Knowing one’s limits is just as important as making sure someone is working out correctly. “Modify or tailor exercises to your ability,” she said. “If you can’t do an advanced-level activity, you can modify it to a simpler one.” She said doing knee pushups rather than regular pushups will help someone if they are having difficulties or if it’s causing them pain. But what’s the difference with being sore or being injured? “Pain after an exercise is normally muscle soreness and that will resolve if you stretch a little and keep moving

… that’s actually a good sign because you can build on that,” Schemm said. “If you have joint pain and swelling, this is not a good thing and you need to ease off on what you are doing.” After a difficult workout, she stressed to do something with less impact or focus on a different muscle group the following workout in order to prevent injury and give the sore joints and muscles time to recover. “If the pain or swelling lasts for only a couple days it probably means someone may have overdone it,” she said. “You don’t want to overtrain any single area. If the pain persists beyond three or four days, you may need to see your healthcare provider.” Her best advice — take it easier for a few days and ease back into the workouts, but don’t completely stop. “You want to keep moving,” Schemm said. “If you aren’t able to run, you want to do something else like walk or ride a stationary bike, elliptical machine or swim … you don’t want to just throw your hands up in the air and say, ‘That’s too much, I’m not doing it’ — find other things to do.” She said if there was one workout method she would highly encourage Airmen to try it would be crosstraining. Cross-training is a workout that combines a variety of strength-training exercises, cardio and flexibility and can be varied throughout the week for an overall body workout without stressing one particular area, Schemm said Strength training may range from beginner’s exercises like squats and pushups to advanced ones like burpees, handstand pushups, battle ropes
