Brig. Gen. Arlan M. DeBlieck, incoming commanding general, 7th Civil Support Command, receives the unit colors from Maj. Gen. John R. O’Connor, commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, during a change of command ceremony Saturday. DeBlieck took responsibility of command from Brig. Gen. Paul M. Benenati, outgoing commanding general, 7th Civil Support Command after 20 months in command. See article on Page 5.

With more than 400,000 enlisted active duty, Reserve and Guard Airmen, few get to tout the distinction of being honored as an Outstanding Airman of the Year. Senior Airman Shabree Heasell, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, accomplished that honor this year while stationed here as an imagery analyst with the 603rd Air and Space Operations Center. Though, before she was put up for the award, she had not even heard of it. “It’s really exciting, but I guess it hasn’t hit me yet,” Heasell said. “Everyone keeps telling me how big of an accomplishment it is. My supervisor says it probably won’t hit me until I go to the ceremony in

September and see the big picture of what it is. Right now, I’m just trying to stay humble and do my job every day.” The OAY program was established at the Air Force Association’s 10th Annual National Convention in New Orleans in 1956. Outstanding enlisted members representing each major Air Force command and operating agency were invited to the convention as a means of highlighting an Air Force military manpower crisis. Initially meant to be a onetime event, the program was so well received that it has continued as a way to recognize top performers. The award recognizes Airmen for superior leadership, job performance, community involvement and personal achievements. See OAY Page 3

A German medical officer was awarded the Army Achievement Medal July 23 in Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. “No matter what field we work in, we are Soldiers first,” said Capt. Michael Guthmann, from the German air force Center of Aerospace Medicine. “From staying physically fit, to improving our skill, it is important we train every day.” Guthmann received the prestigious award for teaching medical U.S. Soldiers, Airmen, and Sailors various contingency skills that could be implemented down range. “For example, during the German proficiency course we had all the medical members shoot

with a variety of weapons so they can familiarize themselves with what they might use in the field,” Guthmann continued. “The point was to build on the interoperability between the two nations by providing these unique opportunities to train together.” From October 2013 to March 2014, U.S. Soldiers, Airmen and Sailors came together with their foreign medical counterparts to participate in various training. The course consisted of firing German rifles and pistols to qualify for the Proficiency and Schützenschnur badges, track and field events for the sports badge, ruck marches and much more. “Joint training like this, not only with our sister services, but with the host nation is always beneficial,” said Maj. Michael McCown, Public See AWARD, Page 3

Air Force Core Values – The 86th Materiel Maintenance Squadron

by 1st Lt Gregory Souder 86th Materiel Maintenance Squadron The Air Force Core Values are a three-part code for all Airmen to uphold no matter the situation. This code is ever present to help guide Airmen even when the path to completing a mission is unclear. As long as you put integrity first, service before yourself, and strive for excellence in all you do, the mission will be accomplished. In the 86th Materiel Maintenance Squadron, the Core Values are essential to our success. Our squadron is made up of 16 Air Force Specialty Codes supporting the readiness of U.S. Air Forces in Europe by maintaining its largest supply of War Readiness Materiel. Here are some opinions from our members on each of the Core Values: Integrity First — Staff Sgt. Kyle Sarringer: Integrity is defined as having an adherence to moral and ethical principles. To break this down further, integrity is more than just having a moral compass or doing what is right. It means doing what is right every time, even when it would be easier to look the other way. For example, when you see Airmen of any rank who may not be adhering to regulations, you should make it point to address the situation when you see it. Some assume that if a member forgets

their cover, they are already aware of their mistake. However, any infraction must be dealt with at the present time, otherwise it may continue. Integrity is what it takes to properly accomplish the mission because when an aircraft takes off or a convoy leaves the gate, they must rely on the integrity of the mechanic, technician, or engineer to make sure they can return safely. If there is one slip in the chain, the whole mission can fail. Integrity is a service to our fellow Airmen as well as a service to our nation. Service Before Self — Tech. Sgt. Patrick Araujo: This simple little three-word phrase is the catalyst of our nation’s armed forces and the invisible fabric that binds us together to transform individual Airmen into the world’s premier Air Force. Some say putting the uniform on is an act of service before self, but how do we serve when wearing that uniform? Are we providing knowledge and expertise to our fellow Airmen by asking the hard questions, leading by example, and molding our replacements? Or are we only thinking about our own career path, goals and aspirations, leaving the others to fend for themselves? The time is now for all Airmen to ensure we can provide our force with impeccable service. So before you take care of yourself, let’s think about how we can better serve in whatever position we hold. No matter

whether you are Officer or Enlisted, we all owe it to those past and present that have paved the paths we follow today to allow us to be known as the most powerful Air Force in the world! Excellence In All We Do — Staff Sgt. Myra Melendez: When I think of this core value, the first thing that comes to my mind is the quote, “Excellence is not a skill, it is an attitude.” This is true because in order to do excellent things, you have to want excellence and you have to want to produce excellence. When we don’t feel passionate or proud of what we do, excellence will seldom be the outcome and we settle for mediocre work. We have the honor and privilege of serving in the most excellent branch of service, the U.S. Air Force. Let us uphold the standards and continue to represent the Air Force in an excellent way. Whatever you do, do it with excellence in mind and you will not be disappointed with the outcome! As sergeants Sarringer, Araujo and Melendez state, the Air Force Core Values help define what it means to be an Airman. The 86th MMS follows these Core Values everyday to accomplish our mission. We encourage all members of our service to take time to reflect on what the core values mean to them and how they apply those values everyday.

AF Assistance Fund may not hit 2014 goal by Staff Sgt. Carlin Leslie Air Force Public Affairs Agency OL-P

In spite of persistent economic difficulties, activeduty and retired Airmen have contributed more than $6 million to the Air Force Assistance Fund, or AFAF, during this year’s fund drive. Although the annual AFAF drive has yet to garner this year’s $6.4 million goal, contributions continue to roll in from the 79 assistance fund campaigns around the world. Those coupled with retiree and annuitant contributions may make the difference, said Bill D’Avanzo, from the Air Force Personnel Center. Even though the AFAF drive has closed for the active-duty members, it remains open for the retiree’s year-round to submit contributions through the mail. While the overall totals to date paint a sobering picture that may be indicative of the current economy and financial uncertainty that permeates the U.S. and its government right now, officials said

An example of the impact these charities have on Airmen comes from prior-enlisted member, Maj. Jim Murtha, a 811th Force Support Squadron operations officer. As an airman first class at Rhein-Main Air Base, Germany, his wife then pregnant with their twin daughters ran into a very tight financial situation. The family was under extreme stress expecting two children at once, which would double their new baby needs (two cribs, two high chairs, two car seats, and more). In addition, they had a 10-year old car that kept breaking down and a home to pay for. Murtha’s first sergeant referred him to the Air Force Aid Society representative who put him at ease, helped put his family on the right path, offered financial counseling, provided information on food pantries, as well as contacts for a support group for parents of twins. Some of Heasell’s highlights include developing secret service primary and alternate routes, which secured the visits of not only President Obama but also 223 other personnel; resolving 82 errors after being requested by her group commander to scrutinize more than 1,000 civilian timecards; co-authoring a new career field education and training plan, which aided in standardizing two Air Force specialty codes among other things. “I love imagery more than anything I’ve ever done before,” Heasell said. “I think I’m just really fortunate that I have a job that I love, which makes it really easy for me to do.” Heasell’s enthusiasm is not just limited to her job. She also spends quite a bit of time volunteering. “I think it’s important to do stuff you are passionate about,” Heasell said. “It’s not about going to get a couple of hours, but to go do something you really want to do.” One of the things Heasell is passionate about is victim advocacy. Her passion has led her to spend more than 280 hours on-call and personally advise three victims as an advocate, but her energy isn’t limited only to her passions. “Whenever my supervisors or my chain of command would tell me about an opportunity and ask me if I was interested, I would never say no,” she said. “If there was something that was important to them, I would always try to do it.” Behaving as such, Heasell volunteered 250 hours at 41 events with 12 organizations in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. She counts taking over as the co-chair for the Ramstein Officers Spouses Club committee among one of her greatest. According to Heasell, the previous chair asked her to take over as he had seen leadership qualities in her during previous volunteer events. She rallied more than 200 volunteers to raise $6,500 for the Air Force Ball, for which she also served as a chairman. Heasell’s accomplishments didn’t end there. She finished a Community College of the Air Force degree in Intelligence Studies

Guthmann said throughout his 27 years of service, he has never received a U.S. Army medal and appreciates the recognition, as it is a rare circumstance and will probably never happen again in his career. “I am very excited and honored to receive this award,” he said. “It is not normal for a German service member to receive this and it is very special to me. well ahead of the nine-year staff sergeant average rate of completion. She also completed two classes toward a master degree, having come into the Air Force with her bachelor’s degree. Additionally, Heasell completed and was certified on the Collateral Damage Estimate course, a qualification only 8 percent of the Air Force intelligence community holds. “I really have to give the credit to my leadership,” Heasell said. “If I had to give someone advice on how to do this, it would be, ‘Listen to your senior NCOs.’ I was constantly asking my supervisors what was expected of me, how I am supposed to act, what would make you happy and what about my job do I really need to be good at. They just mentored me like crazy, and I would try to incorporate their experiences in my life. “I’m always trying to be the best version of myself,” Heasell continued. “I compete with myself the most, but it is the dedication of my leadership and the people around me that have helped me get to where I am today. You don’t get awards or recognition by yourself.”

You have really made me feel a part of the team.” Guthmann said he felt a sense of joy when he looked into the crowd of U.S. Soldiers standing before him, the men and women he mentored for so many months. Not for the success of the course or for the medal he received, but for the friendships that were forged along the way. “Though my career requires me to leave soon, I plan to stay in contact with all my new friends I have made here,” Guthmann said. “I thank all the U.S. members who accepted me as their own, I will never forget you.”

Quad riding rules

Before bringing a quad and all-terrain vehicle to Germany or renting one locally, riders must be aware of the rules. Riders in Germany must be in possession of a class B (regular POV) drivers license and wear a helmet. Quads registered in Germany, including USAREUR-registered vehicles, may be driven on all public roads. Riding on the autobahn is only permissible if the maximum allowed speed for the vehicle is over 60 kilometers per hour. Roads and trails designated for agricultural or forestry vehicles only are off limits for quads unless riders have prior permission from the local forestry office. Off-roading is prohibited in Germany. As a general rule, riding a quad is only allowed where it is also legal to drive a car. There are very few off-road quad areas in Germany, none of them are in the local KMC area. The closest quad area is in Saverne, France, 85 kilometers from Kaiserslautern.

Club 7 – Where community comes together by Kimberly Parker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

aving a place to call home is important when transitioning into a new assignment and arguably even more important when transitioning into an overseas assignment. Many refer to Club 7 as their “home away from home.” Besides being greeted with a smiling face, the facility within Bldg. 2410 features comfy couches, gaming systems, large flat screen TVs and fast WiFi. It provides Airmen a friendly and alcohol-free space to unwind and meet new people. “It’s like a big living room,” said Rick Deppe, Airman Ministries Center Coordinator. “ People come in to relax, play games and socialize.” Club 7 offers games, video games, movies, snacks, home cooked meals on Friday nights and even trips at little or sometimes no cost to Airmen. “Some of our planned programs include bowling nights, dinner and movie nights, bible study and early opening from noon to 10 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Fridays,” said Terry Goodwin, Club 7 manager. For Airman 1st Class Luis Castro, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron supply journeyman, Club 7 is a place to get away after work and to meet new friends. “I’ve been here for about a month and this has been a great place to make friends and network,” he said. Whether it is volunteering to help run Club 7 or connecting Airmen with other community volunteer opportunities, the idea is to bring the community together and to get people involved. Master Sgt. Club 7 opened their doors in 2008 and serves approximately 40 Airmen a month. Now, Club 7 is considered a home away from home to approximately 1,500 service members from across Ramstein and Kapaun Air Station. While Club 7 is an extension of the Chaplain Corps, you do not have to be religious to use the facility. “We put no pressure on people to conform to a religion,” Deppe said. “It doesn’t matter what faith you are or if you don’t have a certain faith at all, we are here to support the community. The only time religion enters the conversation is if it is initiated by an Airman.” For more information call commercial 06371-47-5753 or 480-5753 or connect on Facebook by searching Ramstein Club 7.

Capt. Spanky and the Linderhof Palace Hello Ramstein! I’m so excited to tell you about my newest expedition, my nub won’t stop wagging! Recently, my human took me to a very special castle where I felt like a royal pup for a day. As the smallest of three castles built by King Ludwig II, the Linderhof Palace was the only castle he lived to see completed. The castle is located in Ettal, a four and a half hour drive from Ramstein. Though the drive leading up to the palace is not surrounded by many buildings as it is secluded, I stuck my head out the window to enjoy the amazing scenery and fresh air. For a smaller cas-

Page 9

tle, there is so much to see. Each room is decorated with pawsitively extravagant embellishments, statues, paintings, mirrors and fancy 19th century furniture that smelled good enough to nibble. Outside the palace is the Linderhof Park, which was set out to recreate the palace and gardens of Versailles, France. In the center of it all is a grand fountain that you can’t miss.

The water looked so refreshing, I had to sneak in a doggy paddle session. Normally, I don’t like lemons; they make me lick my snout a thousand times, but this lemon tree had me jumping with excitement. This 300-year-old tree was planted because of King Ludwig II’s fascination with trees. I couldn’t help but bury my favorite bone in the gardens of this hidden treasure. If you want to explore outside of the local area, the Linderhof Palace is a great place to see something different in Germany, and get a great history lesson. I’ll give it two paws up!

Recipe of the week: Fried Egg Cake Servings: 20 Ingredients: TOPPING 2 packages vanilla pudding mix (not instant), unsweetened 80 grams sugar 750 milliliters milk BATTER 150 grams margarine or butter 150 grams sugar 1 package Vanillin Zucker (vanilla sugar) 1 pinch salt 3 medium eggs 300 grams flour, sifted 2 teaspoons Backpulver (baking powder) 2 tablespoons milk 500 grams creme fraiche 700 grams canned apricot halves, drained (reserve juice) GLAZE 2 packages *Tortenguss (clear) 50 grams sugar 500 milliliters apricot juice Directions: Heat the oven to 200 C. / 400 F. TOPPING Follow the instructions for making the pudding, but only use 750 ml. of milk. Allow to cool, stirring occasionally. BATTER 1. Cream the margarine or butter, using the whisk attachment of your electric mixer.

2. Gradually mix in the sugar and vanilla sugar and the pinch of salt. Continue to mix until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time every 30 seconds. 3. Sift together the flour and baking powder. 4. Add the flour mixture and the milk to the creamed mixture, beating continually at medium speed. 5. Spread batter on to a greased baking sheet or jellyroll pan. (Or you can us the broiler pan from your oven.) If using a baking sheet, fold a strip of foil several times and place around the batter to help it hold its form. 6. Stir the creme fraiche into the cooled pudding and spread evenly over the batter. 7. Drain the apricots very well, reserving the juice. Arrange the apricots, cut side down onto the pudding mixture. 8. Bake for about 30 minutes. Allow to cool completely. GLAZE (Tortenguss) Make the Tortenguss according to the directions on the package, using the 500 ml. of apricot juice in place of water. Spread or pour evenly over the cooled cake. Allow to set. *The brand name of the Tortenguss we used is “Ruf”. It is already sweetened. Heat it in a sauce pan on the top of the stove until it comes to a light boil. (If you use unsweetened Tortenguss, add 25 grams of sugar for each package of Tortenguss.)

Be safe, prevent cooking fires by Master Sgt. Edward J. Seeley Sr. and Felipe N. Vazquez 86th Civil Engineering Squadron

Cooking is often a relaxing and fun task that brings family and friends together, and it provides a great way to showcase your creativity and love of good food. But cooking is also the number one cause of home fires and home injuries. Being mindful while you cook can go a long way to prevent these fires. The unfortunate fact that home fires occur is a sad reality, and despite sound fire prevention measures and fire safety campaigns, Ramstein Air Base has had four unattended cooking fires within the past two weeks. This is quite a significant difference from our two-year fire-free track record. With these thoughts in mind, we must move forward by considering some additional control measures. Here’s what you need to know: • Keep an eye on what you fry • Be alert when cooking • Keep things that can catch fire away from cooking area Cooking fires by the numbers: Based on 2009-2013 annual averages, unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in these fires. • Two-thirds (67percent) of home cooking

fires started with the ignition of food or other cooking materials. • Clothing was the item first ignited in less than 1 percent of these fires, but these incidents accounted for 15% of the cooking fire deaths. • Ranges accounted for the largest share (57 percent) of home cooking fire incidents. Ovens accounted for 16 percent. • More than half (55 percent) of reported non-fatal home cooking fire injuries occurred when the victims tried to fight the fire themselves. • Frying poses the greatest risk of fire. • Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires. If you have a cooking fire: • Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. • Call 1-1-2 or 06371-47-112 but only after you leave! • If you attempt to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out. • Keep a lid nearby when you are cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled. • For an oven fire turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

U.S., British Soldiers learn the details of deployment with MCT University by Staff Sgt. Alexander A. Burnett 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs The 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 39th Transportation Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade hosted U.S. and British Soldiers through the Movement Control Team University at the Deployment Processing Center on Rhine Ordnance Barracks July 22 to 24. The 15 Soldiers from the 39th Trans. Bn. and three from the British 29th Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps received in-depth training on the proper procedures needed when deploying a unit. The course featured classroom portions covering the steps needed to inprocess deploying personnel, paperwork needed to move personnel and equipment, maintenance requirements for moving equipment and vehicles, weapons transportation and storage, how to conduct a proper inventory and how to construct an aircraft load-plan. The group even got a refresher course on the proper labeling and transporting of hazardous material aboard a

military aircraft. “These classes definitely show the similarities and differences to how the British and U.S. military operate,” said British Army 2nd Lt. David Wilson. “In the future, when we conduct operations together it is important for us to know how the other works, so each mission will go more smoothly.” During the three-day instruction period, the international group of military students also received hands-on training in several areas. They spent one morning conducting rail load operations and learning how to properly place equipment onto rail cars for transport. They also learned how to build and secure a pallet and how to brace and block a container to ensure safe air travel for equipment. “This is definitely a change for us in the British Army because pallet building is something we have our Air Force do,” Wilson said. As the course came to an end, one U.S. noncommissioned officer reflected on the importance of this sort of training. “For our Soldiers and our international partners, this kind of training is very important for members of the

KMC Red Tails Come Up Short by Colin Smyth Contributing writer

Kutno, Poland — The KMC Red Tails Little League Baseball All-Star team’s quest for the Little League World Series ended last week. The team was unable to advance out of pool play against some of the best young ball players in all of Europe. In a field crowded with the most teams ever to qualify for the European Regional Tournament, the Red Tails began the tournament on July 15, with a game against France. Seeking to make a statement early, the Red Tails led with their ace south paw, Andrew Smyth, who shut down the French champions for the first two innings. Relievers Brett Parker and Josh Yosfan then closed the door, combining for another two innings of shutout baseball as the Red Tails completed the mercy-rule shortened victory 13-0. Hard-hitting center fielder Damon Nelson sparked the offense with a triple off the fence, and timely defense across the board, including two tough catches by left fielder Terry White, which

sealed the KMC victory. A scrappy Belgian squad turned out to be more of a challenge than the Red Tails anticipated, and after ace starter Ry Yates and the offence jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, the tide began to turn. Ultimately, not even a stellar 4-hit performance (2 home runs and 2 doubles) by clean-up man Brandon Reynolds, stout defense and tough relief pitching by Ben Lenahan, Damon Nelson and Mason Peace, who each made their first appearance on the mound in the post season, was enough to overcome a sudden explosive Belgian offense, which amassed 17 runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings, earning a 17-10 victory. With their backs against the wall, the Red Tails came out fighting on Thursday against the defending European Regional Champs, Czech Republic. Turning to their two aces to hold the Czechs down, KMC started fast with Ry Yates, who went for two solid innings, allowing only 3 runs and smashing a solid RBI double in the gap to score speedster Gabriel Falcon. Knowing they were close, the Red Tails handed

the ball to dominant lefty Smyth who punished the Czech batters over the next three innings, allowing only 1 additional run. Superb defense behind the dish by catcher Cody Schwope and up the middle by short stop Jackson Leech, along with several highlight-reel plays by Carter Woelkers at second base helped keep the game within reach, and together the Red Tails limited an explosive Czech squad that had scored 37 runs in their last two games to only 4. Ultimately, though, the offense could not generate any more runs and KMC lost 4-1. The Czech Republic team would go on to win the tournament for a second consecutive season, outscoring their other opponents by a combined total of 60-9, with no other team allowing fewer than 11 runs — a testament to the spirit of the Red Tails, and their “never quit” attitude. Even though this season ended earlier than they hoped, Manager Jason Ralph expressed pride in all of the players for their work ethic and effort during the season, and said he is already looking forward to next year.
