COMUSAFE thanks Airmen, reflects on service Story and photo courtesy of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Public Affairs After 37 1/2 years in the U.S. Air Force, Gen. Frank Gorenc shared a few departing words to Airmen as he prepared for the Aug. 11 change of command and future retirement. As U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander for the past three years, Gorenc will leave behind an exceptional legacy that has helped propel all European-based Airmen to the next level by reinvigorating a “Forward, Ready, Now” mentality. “It’s always an honor and a privilege to be a commander; it’s really an honor and privilege to be a commander when you’re presented
with a significant challenge, a worldwide challenge that tests not only the people but the organization,” Gorenc said. From day one at the helm of USAFE-AFAFRICA, the commander was presented with a number of challenges testing his ability to lead the command on a multitude of fronts while maintaining the long-standing allied partnerships within Europe. In 2014 alone, USAFEAFAFRICA’s endurance was tested again and again, including Russia’s actions in Crimea, the proliferation of Daesh and the deadly Ebola outbreak in Africa. European Airmen cinched the opportunity to serve up a dose of airpower under Gorenc’s leadership through strategic and See COMUSAFE, Page 2

A group of commanders from the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing participate in an inspection meeting Aug. 4 on Ramstein. The meetings are designed to properly train commanders on what to expect during inspections.
When new commanders come into the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, they must attend a briefing with a 435 AGOW inspection team member. This is important for commanders so that they can understand the inspector’s role and what standards are expected to be maintained in areas such as safety, readiness, proficiency and more. According to Lt. Col. Denis Briceno, 435 AGOW chief of inspections, this initial briefing, required within 30 days of assuming command, is part of a vital process to helping a new commander settle into his or her position.
“Part of my roles and responsibilities is to give a new commander an introduction into the Air Force Inspection System,” Briceno said. “It’s important for them to know how to comply with Air Force instructions and expectations that come with their position. They’re incredibly busy individuals. They may not have time to dig into inspection details, so they need that third party to come in and highlight these aspects.” An inspection team is charged with examining the actions of a government agency, military organization or military contractor as a general assessor of their operations. This is to ensure compliance with generally established pol-

It’s your loss if you don’t floss COMMENTARY
by Staff Sgt. Justin Lane 86th Dental Squadron The other day while browsing Facebook for funny fail videos, I came across something even more outrageous. It was an article — recently gaining considerable coverage — attempting to debunk the need for dental floss by claiming no significant evidence exists to support flossing. In fact, for the first time since its introduction in 1979, this year’s national Dietary Guidelines for Americans does not include flossing as a recommendation. What’s the real story? I am an oral preventative dental assistant at the 86th Dental Squadron, meaning I have the distinct pleasure of cleaning every square inch of your grill, and not the propane or charcoal kind. Pretty much, I am a subject matter expert in the field of cleaning teeth, and I’d like to set the record straight on flossing. When a person doesn’t brush their teeth well, food particles left unattended in the

humanitarian capabilities. “The satisfaction of watching our Airmen do the business of the Air Force over the last three years has simply been spectacular and personally fulfilling. It was a significant three years in our history, and we always rose to meet the challenge,” Gorenc said. He attributed USAFE’s success to the fact that the Air Force has always been a nonstop force of innovation since its inception in 1947. “It’s been reassuring to see that we continue to develop and nurture Airmen that understand; that when our nation calls, they rise to the occasion and deliver our core competencies in a way that allows us to consistently win 100-0, not 51-49,” Gorenc said. “In this busi-
ness, winning 51-49 is not an option.” The general said he’s proud to see Airmen continue to build upon each generation’s success to further the Air Force’s core competencies of air and space superiority, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, rapid mobility, strike, and command and control. “It’s very satisfying to know how consistent the Air Force message has been and how we have been able to find better ways to deliver exceptional combat power,” Gorenc added. Since his time and graduation from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1979, the general has repeatedly set and achieved many of his goals throughout his career, but he said it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of strong mentors and family

mouth become plaque, a sticky deposit on your teeth that turns into a breeding ground for bacteria. While plaque is easily removed by brushing, when it remains too long it morphs into a hard substance called calculus. Even though brushing is a relatively simple preventative measure, we unfortunately see a mild buildup of calculus on most patients’ teeth. By brushing your teeth alone, you are only able to clean the front and backsides of your teeth. Brushing does not effectively clean between the teeth. Flossing helps remove plaque in the areas that your toothbrush cannot, preventing calculus formation and cavities. So how could an article state that flossing isn’t important, and why would the U.S. government’s DGA drop its flossing recommendation? Simply put, any health recommendation in the DGA must be grounded in good modern research. Since the 1800s, flossing has been a standard recommendation of U.S. doctors and dentists. As medical research
support. “I’ve had many mentors; I can’t really describe just one,” Gorenc said. “I’ve had a lot of immediate supervisors that have taken care of me in a way that I never expected. “Those mentors, what they did have in common, is that they recognized my potential, and they helped me realize that potential,” Gorenc added. “They saw it fit to make sure they advocated for me in a way that would allow me to continue my career.” In his time, Gorenc has traveled all around the globe and seen too many changes to count, but one of his favorite moments came fairly early on in his career. “One of the best memories that I have occurred after 10 years of being in the Air Force,” Gorenc said.

standards have increased in recent decades, conducting new research on the benefits of flossing is costly and time-consuming, especially for a topic so self-evident to professionals dealing with its benefits daily. Still not convinced? Research is also hard to conduct because so many people floss incorrectly and are not properly removing plaque. Proper flossing is known as the “C-shape” method: gently slide the floss down between two adjacent teeth, wrap the floss around the surface of one side of the tooth like a “C” and then gently bring the floss up again while maintaining the wrapped “C” position. After a few gentle passes, repeat on the other side. Remember, you are not trying to cut down a tree rooted in your gums. Good flossing takes less than one minute per day. Don’t cheat yourself out of great oral health because of the recent media buzz. If you have any questions regarding your oral health, contact the 86th Dental Squadron at 479-2210. Stay flossy!
It was his first real deployment and he was flying combat missions during the first Gulf War. “At that time, it was really great to see my training and my mission really come together for the first time,” Gorenc recalled. “It was great to experience that moment where everything you’ve learned is put to practice and you realize that your training enabled you to do the mission so well.” Gorenc still aspires to reinforce just how important each Airman’s role in Europe is to the overall Air Force mission and American partnerships. “The most important thing that Airmen do in the European theater is work with our allies and partners to develop and nurture trust,” Gorenc said. “The Airman’s key role
overseas is to be an ambassador,” he said. “Each and every one of us is charged with promoting relationships, building trust and enabling our allies and partners to bring peace and stability to the world.” As his time in blue draws to a close, Gorenc also said memories of his family and all of their sacrifices and support during his career hold a very special place in his heart. “Looking back and remembering all the things my family and I have experienced and seeing how my wife, Sharon, and my kids, Michael and Helen, have come through and enjoyed everything the Air Force had to offer is so special to me,” Gorenc said. “It was just a great place to raise a family, and it was a great memory that I have now as I retire.”

EOD stays wired up with FTX Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 786th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal conducted a field training exercise during the week of July 25 to 28. The FTX improved mission readiness through multiple scenarios that ensured the EOD Airmen are ready to properly conduct missions in real-world situations. According to Senior Master Sgt. Tom Pilla, 786 CES EOD flight chief, the event keeps Airmen up to date on EOD capabilities. “Throughout my time in the service, training has become much more complex for EOD,” Pilla said. “We continue to learn more lessons on how to better condition our Airmen for situations out in the field, whether they’ve been in combat before or not.” The exercises included dismounted improvised explosive device training,

the counter-improved explosive device mission.” According to Overton, this cooperation is an example of the camaraderie EOD Airmen have with one another. “We’re very close with one another,” Overton said. “This type of training prepares members for the deployed missions and builds team integrity.” Firefighters from the 786 CES also participated, and according to Master Sgt. Edward Seeley, 786 CES assistant chief of fire department readiness, cooperation with other units across Ramstein is vital to mission success. “Every chance to work with units such as security forces or EOD, I like to take,” Seeley said. “We learn so much more by becoming involved in larger exercises that come closer to real-life situations. Not only that, but learning a little about their jobs goes a long way when it comes to strategizing what we can do to make a process easier for not just us but all Airmen involved.”

86 AES train to save wounded Story and photo by Senior Airman Nesha Humes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The roaring engines of a C-130J Super Hercules nearly drown out the Airman’s commands as the team quickly, yet systematically load medical supplies and simulated patients through the aircraft’s open ramp in preparation for a flight departing Ramstein. The 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron flight nurses and aeromedical evacuation technicians practice like they fight. The Airmen conduct training scenarios called aeromedical readiness missions in order to better prepare themselves for possible future scenarios. Their mission is to provide time-sensitive, mission-critical en route care to patients going to and between medical treatment facilities. Their patients include veterans and their dependents injured across Europe, Africa and in deployed locations. Capt. Jeana Angulo, 86 AES, has been a flight nurse for more than a year and said it’s been an interesting roller coaster ride and a huge change from the hospital environment. “You have to be a competent clinician first to be able to feel confident to go up into the air at (a high) altitude and take care of a patient,” Angulo said. “At the same time, you do have to know your capabilities, and if the worst-case scenario happens, (you need to) have it under control. It is tough.” Capabilities such as operating equipment and sustaining resources is significant in caring for their patients’ lives and their own. With the aircraft’s continuous engine noise, compact space and limited medications and equipment, assisting patients in a mobile clinic offers its own challenges. “We had a lot more resources available to us,” said Staff Sgt. Christine Holmes, 86 AES aeromedical evacuation technician, about her previous work in a clinic.
Airmen from the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron assess a mock patient during a training mission July 21 on Ramstein. There are currently four U.S. Air Force active-duty aeromedical evacuation squadrons, which make up 29 percent of the total aeromedical evacuation capability.
“We had everything we needed for a patient, but when you’re in the air, you’re part of a five-man crew of nurses and technicians. If a patient goes south or (is) having some problems in-flight, you have to think outside the box. Seeing the injuries we see and having to adjust your thinking to those situations is challenging sometimes, but definitely rewarding.” On top of the conditions and injuries, the aeromedical evacuation crew must utilize critical thinking skills to care for patients whose symptoms change in-flight. “Once you bring them up to (a certain) altitude you have factors to consider,” Angulo said, “Decrease partial pressure or oxygen, barometric pressure changes, humidity factors and fatigue from flying (are a few considerations). All those factors we have to learn, the stresses of flight and how they specifically affect those diagnoses.” In addition, the crew must learn the aircraft and its emergency procedures. The 86 AES members are qualified on the KC-135 Stratotanker, C-130J Super Hercules, C-17 Globemaster III and C-21. The crew is trained on understanding the aircraft’s emergency procedures and electrical capabilities. “We have to learn so much
about the aircraft and how to take care of our patients, as well as ourselves, in the event of the emergency,” Angulo said. One of the resources Airmen must monitor is calculating the transformer’s amps to utilize equipment for patients and emergencies. “We have to watch how many amps we’re pulling and how many the aircraft can give,” Angulo said. “We have to take into consideration how much oxygen that big green box can hold and (if we have enough). A lot of factors play
(into our actions).” Thus, the weekly ARMs help 86 AES Airmen stay updated on their duties. The training missions provide the crew with simulated patient treatment plans and the opportunity to act and talk out their protocol in real time. After mock patient treatments, flight nurses act as instructors and quiz the crew on further care plans. Senior Airman Cristhian Rodriguez, 86 AES aeromedical evacuation technician, said because each patient has their own treatment plan, he’s
continually learning. “It’s a fast-paced job,” Rodriquez said. “It’s something different every time we fly — different aircraft, environment and place.” The crew follows an extensive checklist in which they’re responsible for knowing the expanded protocols on events such as emergency landing, rapid decompression and fire in-flight. “(The checklist) touches on these responsibilities and gives us guidance on how we’re supposed to react,” Angulo said. “As we are not doctors, we have to rely on our protocols. It’s important to maintain a checklist.” Though the crew has many responsibilities, the mission can be rewarding. “I think it’s special to be part of this mission,” Rodriguez said. “We pick up patients who have been all over the world, and we get to hear their experiences. I’ve always loved patient care, and I like to serve others. I think this is the best job ever. Even if it was a long flight, at the end of the day you feel a great sense of accomplishment.” Whether they are hastily loading supplies or aiding a mock patient approximately 30,000 feet in the air, the 86 AES continues to practice procedures in an effort to provide the best care that they can. Contingency ATCs assisted with International Jump Week by communicating with aircraft and airfield personnel to coordinate safe drops of cargo and personnel.
Story and photos by Senior Airman Nesha Humes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Twice a year, several participating countries come to together on Ramstein to build relations, share knowledge and offer paratroopers the opportunity to practice high-altitude, low-opening and static-line jumps. Multiple organizations play an instrumental role in preparing for the
multinational exercise, one of them being the contingency air traffic controllers, a portion of the drop zone support team. “International Jump Week is for us to compare tactics, techniques and procedures with our foreign partners,” said Master Sgt. Dustin Guiducci, 435th Contingency Response Group contingency air traffic controller and DZ controller. “It’s a huge partnership-building capacity
event. It allows us to all work together to see how they do business and for them to see how we do business. (The DZ support team is) a very, very small piece.” Tech Sgt. Jeremy Francisco, 435th Contingency Response Squadron contingency ATC in training, said the course is common for Soldiers in combat career fields; however, attending as nonbattlefield Airmen is rare.
“There are only seven contingency air traffic controllers in the entire Air Force,” Guiducci said. One of four CRGs in the Air Force, the 435 CRG contains all seven of the contingency ATCs. Guiducci stated they send ATCs through the course depending on mission needs. The contingency ATCs conduct site surveys, set up visual references See ATCS, Page 11
U.S. Army Health Clinic-Kaiserslautern earns NCQA success by Staff Sgt. Christopher Whitaker U.S. Army Health Clinic-Kaiserslautern Anyone that has worked in a medical facility knows that certification is very important to medical organizations. Anyone that’s ever worked in a hospital knows that when Joint Commission season comes around, you can almost taste the anticipation. One might ask why it matters, and the answer is fairly simple: not only is it required by the Department of Defense but also a prime indicator of a health organization’s commitment to quality health care and care for patients. In addition, the Joint Commission is the standard accreditation body for all U.S. civilian and Department of Defense medical facilities. The conflict is that Joint Commission standards and the inspection that comes along with them don’t always translate well to the standards for outpatient clinics. While the Joint Commission still inspects and certifies primary care clinics, something more specific to those clinics was needed to establish and
ensure quality-of-care standards are met. The National Committee for Quality Assurance was created to do for outpatient clinics what the Joint Commission does for hospitals and other inpatient facilities. NCQA requires the health organization to complete a rigorous survey, documenting procedures, performance and results. After all this is completed and submitted, the organization is ranked on a tiered three-point scale. A result of “Level 1” states that the organization is heading in the right direction but isn’t quite there yet. A rating of “Level 2” is considered the standard for the DOD and implies that the organization is doing everything right and providing great care but is not exceptional. However, the rating of “Level 3” denotes superior achievement and effort by the organization and is a definite mark of distinction. U.S. Army Health Clinic-Kaiserslautern, also known as Kleber Health Clinic, distinguished itself by earning that treasured Level 3 designation, not only showing its commitment to its patients and
their care but also to the larger organization. Kleber scored an impressive 94.5 out of 100 possible points, one of the highest scores in Europe. It was no small achievement, as Kleber was one of the only clinics in all of U.S. Army Europe that received that distinction. This is the second time in a row Kleber has received the Level 3 certification; the initial inspection was completed in 2014. Even more impressive is that preparation took less than 90 days to complete, where the usual standard is closer to a year. This essentially means the staff was already operating at that level and all that was required was the documentation of the staff being able to maintain and improve the outstanding quality of care beneficiaries receive. U.S. Army Health Clinic-Kaiserslautern is justifiably proud of their accomplishments and the highest level of recognition from the NCQA. It reflects all the endless hard work at the highest level of care by the health care team and demonstrates the commitment to providing outstanding quality care to all their beneficiaries.

Taking swings at Woodlawn classes Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Woodlawn Golf Course, one of the largest military golf courses in Europe, is a second home to some dedicated golfers. One of these golfers is Kevin O’Connor, Professional Golfers’ Association of America teaching professional, and he does more than stay dedicated to golfing once a week. O’Connor spreads his wealth of knowledge to the local community. “The best part of my day is when I help out newcomers and experienced players alike,” O’Connor said. He hosts classes throughout the week, both public classes and private one-onone sessions, to teach players the basics of the sport and better their techniques. According to O’Connor, one of the most important aspects of golf, as with
most sports, is confidence. “One of the persistent obstacles in most golfers is their confidence level,” O’Connor said. “When newcomers start playing the first few times, I’ll notice them hesitantly stay back and observe what other players are doing. My job is to get them to that green and start swinging with some self-assurance.” One of O’Connor’s class participants, Chief Master Sgt. Tamar Dennis, Kisling NCO Academy commandant, experienced her first venture in golfing during a class. “I wanted to try something new, and I always wanted to get into golf,” Dennis said. “It’s something that can follow you throughout your life. I’m having an absolute blast here.” Whether you’re looking to perfect your swing or learn how each golf club works, instructors such as O’Connor want to help the community find enjoyment

Practicing EDITH saves lives Courtesy of KMC Fire Emergency Services A fire-safe family knows just what to do in the event of a home fire because they have a plan and practice exit drills in the home — E.D.I.T.H. Below are ways to help keep your family firesafe. Create a fire escape plan: • Start by drawing a floorplan of your home on a piece of paper. Then draw in all doors and windows. Your children can use crayons to draw in beds, tables and other furniture. • In one color, draw a line that shows the primary way out of each room. In different color, draw another line that shows the secondary way out. • Pick a meeting place outside of your home where everyone can gather after they have left the burning building. • Hold home fire drills and make them realistic by pretending some exits are blocked by smoke or fire. Hold your drills in the evening since kids can get disoriented in the dark and fires often happen at night. • Children may need assistance escaping, so make this part of your plan. • Make sure everyone knows that once you’re out, stay out. Never go back inside a burning building. • Now that you have your fire escape plan, make sure everyone in the family practices it at least every six months. Escape tips: • Close doors behind you as you escape to slow the spread of fire and smoke. • If you have to escape through smoke, crawl while keeping your head one to two feet above the floor where the air will be cleanest. • Test doorknobs and spaces around closed doors with the back of your hand. If the door is warm, try another escape route. If it is cool, open it slowly. Immediately shut the door if smoke comes through. In next month’s article we will talk about living in single family, multi-story housing in Germany. Kaiserslautern Military Community Fire Emergency Services is always available to assist. Earning Edelweiss at exercise Alpendistel 2016 Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Frank Brown Jr. 18th Military Police Brigade GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — Many Americans serving in Germany know Edelweiss as a lodge and resort nestled between majestic mountains, bright, blue skies, vibrantly green trees and fluffy white clouds in Southern Bavaria. But for some brave challengers, Edelweiss can be a lot less comfortable, even a bit of a cliffhanger. Soldiers from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 18th Military Police Brigade participated in exercise Alpendistel 2016, specialized German mountain warfare training, in Bad Reichenhall, Germany. Iterations of the two-day exercise took place July 20 to 21 and July 27 to 28. The exercise is designed to challenge the physical and mental toughness of the participants, as well as prove their proficiency in mountain operations. A total of 39 participants, including eight Soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, completed the training. Of the 39 participants, 36 earned the coveted German Mountain Proficiency Badge, including the special Edelweiss badge specially worn by German Mountain Soldiers. Two fairly daunting
After a long day of rain, rucking and climbing, Soldiers from the 18th Military Police Brigade and German army return to their home base during exercise Alpendistel 2016. The two-day German mountain warfare training exercise took place July 20 to 21 and July 27 to 28 in Bad Reichenhall, Germany. The exercise is designed to challenge the physical and mental toughness of the participants as well as prove their proficiency in mountain operations. The teams were led by specially trained instructors from the German army’s 23rd Mountain Brigade.
obstacles stood between the Soldiers and the badge: the Predigtstuhl and Seinskopf, two mountains located in the Bavarian Alps, where the majestic mountains were mean, the verdant trees were vicious and the fluffy white clouds were just a reminder of how high the daring Soldiers had actually climbed. Scaling more than 6,000 feet in elevation and covering more than 20 miles in distance, the Soldiers and German army allies rucked across the rocky, unforgiving terrain. Carrying more than 25 pounds of equipment and a weapon, they rappelled from a 40 meter rock cliff, climbed the face of the
mountain using ropes and harnessing equipment for 200 meters and went head to head with a special guest challenger — the weather. During the course of the second iteration of training, Mother Nature decided the training wasn’t difficult enough, so she sent a few thunderstorms just to shake things up, turning the bright blue skies to dark gray fire hydrants pulsing rain. Some of the tents were flooded — all Soldiers were required to spend their nights under the stars — and all of the participants were drenched, adding an extra layer of adversity to the training.

Each team of participants was led by specially trained mountain guides to ensure each task was accomplished correctly and safely. Respondents responded enthusiastically to the challenge and shared opportunity. “It is great. I’m absolutely grateful,” said Brig. Gen. Alexander Sollfrank, 23rd German Mountain Brigade commander based in Mittenwald, Germany. Soldiers of the 23rd German Mountain Brigade are specially trained for operations in difficult, adverse terrain. They’re comprised of different elements, including reconnaissance personnel and engi-
neers as well as a specialized mule company. Sollfrank said he hopes the U.S. Soldiers were able to learn and enjoy the challenging training as well as the cohesion built with German allies. He hopes more Soldiers and allied and partner nations can participate in future iterations of the exercise. The exercise, as well as other specialized small-unit training opportunities, “help enhance individual Soldier skills and overall interoperability with our German Bundeswehr brethren, as well as our other allies and partners nations” said Brig. Gen. Markus Laubenthal, U.S. Army Europe chief of staff, who helped facilitate the opportunity for the American Soldiers. German Mountain Proficiency Badge qualification comes in three phases: “Bronze,” which the participants completed over the last few weeks; “Silver,” which requires participants to complete a winter portion of the training complete with skis and snug accommodations in an igloo; and “Gold,” which requires Soldiers to complete the summer portion twice as well as the winter course within a year’s time. These are daunting tasks, but Sollfrank said accomplishing them yields its own reward. Each Soldier can take pride in accomplishing a feat that only a few can say they’ve done.

If we have a medical situation, then the ambulance goes out. Along with operations down the runway, (we take care of) clearing that runway before the aircraft can land.” Minutes before the aircraft flies over Bitburg Airfield, Germany, the contingency ATCs use a wind meter to calculate conditions. Altitude, surface winds, load type, aircraft speed and DZ size are all variables contingency ATCs must assess when cargo or personnel are aiming to hit the DZ. “Specifically, the (contingency ATCs’) mission is to have a safe and expeditious operation,” Francisco said. “That’s always the goal.” In addition to ensuring the safety and efficiency of air traffic while making quick decisions to monitor multiple variables, these specialized ATCs attend the U.S. Army’s Pathfinder School to learn how to turn an uncontrolled area into a safe landing or drop zone for emergency situations. During the three-week course, the jump-qualified Airmen are taught to rappel from an aircraft, navigate cross-country on foot, conduct sling-load operations, establish day and night aircraft landing and drop zones, and provide air traffic control and navigational assistance to aircraft. The skills contingency ATCs use during International Jump Week ensure all jumpers hit their target safety.

FMSC rehearses dual finance mission Story and photo by Sgt. 1st Class Jacob McDonald 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs
Soldiers from the 266th Financial Management Support Center, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, prepared to conduct dual missions from the Middle East and home station during a challenging mission readiness exercise held Aug. 1 to 5 on Kleber Kaserne. With only about 15 of the unit’s Soldiers preparing to deploy for the nine-month rotation, half of what would normally deploy for the mission, the unit is relying on its unique global position to ensure the mission is successful. “We will have to do a lot of dual hats, a lot of cross training, and that is what this evaluation is exercising,” said Capt. Aurelio Varela, 266th FMSC plans officer. “We are falling in on a mission set where the tasks themselves haven’t decreased. The missions are still the same. … But we are only going there with 15 (Soldiers). “The main reason we are going with 15 is because we have unique reach-back capabilities here in Germany,” Varela added. With only a one-hour time zone difference, the unit is counting on their location in Germany to support

the deployed team and make up the difference. “Normally, an FMSC would deploy with around 30 to 34 Soldiers,” said Lt. Col. Glenn T. Simpkins, 266th FMSC interim director. “Because we are here and we consider ourselves theater-committed and engaged in this theater, we are deploying a smaller team. We believe only the 266th can do the mission with this number because, unlike other FMSCs, this is what we do every day.” In an effort to make the training as realistic as possible, the small team split into two groups and worked from different offices to replicate the
separate countries they will operate out of. The physical barrier simulated the challenge of working together despite a geographical separation. “They can’t walk over there and say, ‘Hey, how are you doing?’” Varela said. “That’s the first time for an exercise like that here because it is the first time the FMSC has been split-based. So this week has been testing that system, how sections communicate back and forth and how they use the reach-back here.” As they worked through scenarios, an eight-man operational support team evaluated the team’s processes and skills to certify the training for
the deployment. “The MRX is really our capstone exercise on our ability to perform our technical mission while deployed,” Simpkins said. Evaluations encompassed a variety of tasks, including cash management, banking and disbursing operations, commercial vendor accounting, pay support and other vital financial management functions. “The end state is we’ll receive evaluations for every section on tasks that have been identified as critical tasks throughout the deployment,” Varela said. “An example is the cash management section will receive a specific evaluation on tasks on how to account for cash, how to move funds in and out of the theater, those sorts of tasks. “This is the one week we can test all the systems,” Varela continued. “This is the only opportunity we will have to figure out where we stand and the best way to utilize the systems.” Simpkins said that while deployed, the 266th FMSC Soldiers will provide oversight of all finance operations, including military pay, contract payments, funding and the flow of funds into and out of theater. Steady state missions, meanwhile, will continue at home station throughout the deployment.
Ramstein engages couples during marriage seminar Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
The Ramstein chapel community hosted a marriage seminar for KMC couples Aug. 6 on Ramstein. Gary Chapman, marriage counselor and author of “The 5 Love Languages” book series, spoke to the couples about the different ways they can better understand their spouses and improve their marriage life. “I think it went really well,” said Chaplain (Capt.) Kristin Swenson, 86th Airlift Wing. “It’s encouraging to see so many couples wanting to continue to grow and develop in their marriage, whether they are struggling or even maintaining (that) healthy relationship. “Either way, hopefully it was beneficial for them,” Swenson continued. The topics discussed during the seminar included how different people give and receive love, common causes of conflicts between couples and how couples can improve communication in order to minimize conflict. Chapman emphasized communication as an indispensable tool in producing a healthy and intimate marriage. “The only one that knows what you’re think-

ing and feeling right now is you,” Chapman said. “That’s also true of me and my wife. If we’re ever going to be intimate, I must choose to reveal to her something that is going on inside of me, and she must choose to listen. “If we do, we can get close, but if we don’t, we
never will,” Chapman continued. Chapman also pointed out what the essence of marriage is and why many people desire to marry. “The very heart of what marriage is all about is this idea of unity, oneness or the sharing of life,” Chapman said. “There’s something about the way we’re made that cries out to have an intimate relationship. “It doesn’t mean we lose our individuality, but it does mean we have a deep sense of intimacy,” Chapman added. Swenson was pleased with how receptive the audience was to Chapman as he spoke. She also said she was happy with the way Chapman engaged with the audience and that she learned some things even as an organizer. “He’s a pretty dynamic speaker,” Swenson said. “Watching him, I think people were very engaged. As a chaplain … I can definitely use (his) book as a resource for couples in my counseling and teaching.” At the end of the seminar, Chapman told the participants to face their partners, hold their hands and proclaim their love and commitment for each other despite their imperfections. As the seminar drew to a close, Chapman and Swenson both hoped the participants left with a renewed sense of passion and commitment for their spouses.

The upper castle is built on a 12-meter-tall oval-shaped sandstone and has a seven-corner tower and a three-floortall hall. The lower castle is divided into three parts connected by gates. In its beginning, Graefenstein served as an administration center for the surrounding farms and villages and had defense capacity. Graefenstein Castle’s known history dates
back to 1220, when the castle was first documented. During the Thirty Years War, Graefenstein was burnt down accidentally in 1635 when imperial troops, who used the castle as a garrison, were careless with fire. From then on, Graefenstein Castle was in ruins. In the 20th century, the castle was partially renovated. It is open to visitors throughout the year. Merzalben is located northeast of Pirmasens. Go on B270 toward Waldfischbach-Burgalben, then left to Donsieders, Clausen and Merzalben. Past Merzalben, take a right toward the castle. Visitors can walk up to the castle by foot or take a shuttle bus. For details, visit www.merzalben.de.

Kirchheimbolanden will celebrate its 66th annual summer fest called “Residenzfest, meaning “residence fest, Saturday through Monday. The fest, which is also known as “three summer days in the little residence, features live music, culinary specialties, wines, Sunday shopping and a fireworks display. Kirchheimbolanden is called the “little residence, because it was the residence of the princes of NassauWeilburg for about 400 years. In 1368, it received town rights. That’s when the town wall with town gates and towers was built. The palace, palace garden, ball house, orangery, court church and baroque houses were built in the 18th century. These buildings reflect the character of the town. City officials, including the mayor and the wine and beer majesties, will open Residenzfest at 5 p.m. Saturday on Roemerplatz. Niederwald Eagle Sanctuary
Story courtesy of MilitaryInGermany.com Ornithology is the study of birds and the term ‘birder’ is for bird watchers that travel long distances to spot a rare bird. When a birder sees a certain bird, they check it off on their list. There is even a 24-hour World Series of Birding which is held in New Jersey every year! Well if you can’t make it to the World Series of Birding, you can still feed your inner ornithologist (that is just pecking to get out) at the Adlerwarte Niederwald (Niederwald Eagle Sanctuary) located on top of the hills in Ruedesheim. The Location and History First of all, this eagle sanctuary has one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen. It is located right next to the Niederwald monument above Ruedesheim. You can get there by going up the cable cars or driving up the mountain in your car to the car park. No doubt these birds are living on some prime real estate! Founded in 1968, the mission of the sanctuary is to look after injured birds of prey and owls, as well as raise abandoned chicks. As soon as the birds are either recovered or are grown enough, they are then released into the wild. The sanctuary has 15 different species of bird of prey with 30 to 35 birds in total. You can even catch the birds’ flight training from time to time.
Also Go Hiking The sanctuary has wonderful woods with spectacular views of the Rhein, and it is also a perfect place to go for a hike! Some famous locations nearby are the old town of Ruedesheim, Bingen, Schloss Johannisberg, and the Niederwald monument. What to Expect You can buy your tickets at the entry way. The entrance price for adults is €4.50 and children 3-14 years €3. There is also a family group rate for €10. The ticket man was very nice and we were ready to see his birds! There is a path in the sanctuary where you can view the birds in their cages. The cages have plenty of room and often have only one bird per cage. We were looking at them and they were looking right back at us! I think one of the coolest things about the sanctuary compared to a zoo is that you know these birds will be back in the wild someday soon. So now we have a rare opportunity for an up close look and have a connection with them.
