Air Force senior leaders unveil new priorities by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

WASHINGTON — In a recent letter to the total force, Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright released their new priorities and addressed issues Airmen face day to day. “For more than 70 years, our fellow Americans have asked you to be the sentinels of air and space for the nation, and you continue to deliver unmatched air and space power every day,” the leaders said. “Looking forward, our obligations to the country will never change. We will always lead and support the

joint force in defending our homeland, owning the high ground and projecting power with our allies.” As the demands for Air Force capabilities continue to increase, the senior leaders established the following priorities to ensure the Air Force is always able to answer the nation’s call and win: Restore readiness … to win any fight, any time. Cost-effectively modernize … to increase the lethality of the force. Drive innovation … to secure our future. Develop exceptional leaders … to lead the world’s most powerful teams. Strengthen our alliances ... because we are stronger together.

Air Force leaders recently released new Air Force priorities.

“Everything we do as a team should advance or augment these priorities,” they continued. “Each and every one of our total-force Airmen

has a role to play in making us successful in this endeavor. We will prevail through the power of our people. You and your families repre-

sent the absolute best of our nation. We are humbled to lead our great Air Force and honored to serve with you every day.”

Transitioning to Windows 10 Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Every day the U.S. Air Force rallies in defense against enemy forces wishing to inflict harm, whether it’s through physical harm or via cyberattacks. As the advancement of technology expands, cyber security is more important than ever. The National Security Agency has directed all of the Department of Defense to make the transition to Microsoft Windows 10. The NSA directive puts all branches of the military on the same operating system for the first time ever. “The Air Force and (Department of Defense) are always moving forward in cyber security … to protect

us against cyberattacks and provide a better and more protected network,” said Staff Sgt. Christian Valdivia, 86th Communications Squadron systems acquisitions supervisor. Keeping up with the civilian enterprise has its challenges as the military fights for optimum security and for smooth communications between departments to deconflict software issues. “In the past, we couldn’t put Air Force on Army equipment down range or vice versa due to software conflict,” Valdivia said. “The only solution then was reimaging the computer and wiping them completely, but with Windows 10, we won’t have to do that,” Valdivia said. The 86 CS supports more than See Standardization, Page 7

Making things right by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs It was a chilly spring evening as I was driving home after spending some time with friends. My wife, who was nine months pregnant at the time, was sleeping soundly in the passenger seat. My only concern at the moment was to bring her home as quickly and safely as possible. As I pulled up to the gate on base where we live, a 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron entry controller there told me they were doing random safety checks, and I was their lucky winner. Occasionally, security forces conducts checkpoints to ensure people coming in and out of the installation are obeying the law. I was quite annoyed when I found I had to go through the process, but I knew resisting them would make things worse. So I begrudgingly pulled my vehicle over and slammed the gear into park. As I turned off my engine, another Airman walked up and started reading the standard briefing:

“My name is (rank and name omitted), you have been selected for a random safety inspection …” At that point, I cut him off saying, “I’ve heard this spiel before, let’s just get this over with!” I’ve been pulled over for random checks more times than I care to remember, and that night I was tired of it. My past experiences and my unrealistic fear of what may happen accumulated like gas in a sealed bottle, and I popped. The rest of the evening went by without an incident, but as I drove off I was still fuming. “What a waste of time,” I thought to myself. “How dare they inconvenience me like that.” For some reason, my mind hung on the word inconvenience. As we got home, I started remembering times my wife and I talked about how happy we were to live on base. “Aren’t we very blessed to live here,” she said. “We don’t have to pay house bills, it’s very peaceful, and it’s safe. We even have police patrolling the area, it’s literally a gated community!” When I calmed down, I felt my conscience stab my heart. The same people I was being thank-

ful for were the same people I just disrespected. I felt like such a wretch. The next duty day, I wrote the following email to one of the security forces Airmen on duty that night: Good Morning (Rank and name omitted), I want to apologize to you and the Airmen who worked with you for my behavior when I was going through your safety checkpoint last Saturday. Although I did not curse the Airmen or resist the procedure, I was being rude by cutting them off in the middle of their talk and showing my displeasure. My behavior is unwarranted, unjustifiable and unbecoming of an Airman. Please do extend my apologies to the Airmen with you that evening. Lastly, I want to thank you and all the other security forces Airmen for what you do: protecting the installation and the people therein. My family can sleep soundly at night because we know you are there. You sacrifice sleep and free

time, stand in the sun and rain, and deal with the uglier face of the military to ensure that the community is safe. Therefore, being pulled over and checked for just a few minutes is a small price to pay for this peace of mind. Thank you for being who you are and doing what you do. (End of email) The Airman replied a couple days later saying he was surprised at my email and thanking me for racking up the courage to apologize. I believe the majority of people do not go about their day intending to be knuckleheads. I think pressure from bad experiences and bad days accumulate within someone, and if you push the right button at the right time, they explode. But while we all go through inconveniences, we are always responsible for our behavior. No matter what you experience in life, remember that we are held to a higher standard. Don’t lose control when things get tough. Furthermore, if you have wronged anyone, don’t be afraid to get back in touch with them and make things right. Nothing helps you see life more clearly than a clean conscience. Because as military members, we fight the enemy, not each other.

Want to teach CPR? 86 MDG offers courses Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 86th Medical Group conducted CPR training for personnel from squadrons Aug. 3 on Ramstein. The monthly training is intended to prepare Airmen and civilians to be their unit’s CPR training representative. Staff Sgt. Melinda Wiltse, 86th MDG emergency medical technician, said those interested in taking the course must have prior certification in adult, child and infant CPR. In order to obtain initial certification, prospective participants can reach out to their unit CPR training representative. If there is no representative in their unit, they can go to the 86th Medical Group for their certification, Wiltse added. “Most units require a trained CPR representative,” she said. “The units have physical training leaders in their units, and CPR training is a prerequisite to taking the PTL course. We have students from different units on base who participated in our training, and now they get to teach what they learned to others.” The training began with classes in the morning touching on the principles of CPR. In the afternoon, participants applied what they learned through hands-on training using mannequins. The mannequins contain bags that inflate when a person blows into the mannequin’s mouth and are designed to provide a realistic training experience. Wiltse presented the training in a way similar to a train-

the-trainer event, in which participants not only refresh their knowledge on the subject at hand but learn how to teach the skill to others. Wiltse showed students how to set up the classroom, what materials and mannequins to use and how to teach the course. Wiltse teaches two kinds of CPR: heart saver and healthcare provider. She describes heart saver CPR as the kind people would use in an emergency situation before first responders arrive. Healthcare provider CPR is what medical professionals would use, which involves more knowledge and more advanced techniques, she said. In heart saver CPR, the rescuer uses 30 chest compressions with every two breaths, Wiltse added. Contrary to popular belief, a person does not need to be drowning in water in order to require CPR, Wiltse explained. Even in an emergency on dry land, a patient may need CPR performed for them.

“You can be anywhere, anytime, and an emergency can happen just like that,” she said, snapping her fingers. “If someone, for example, took their physical training test and passed out, they might need CPR. Anything can be a potential emergency situation, and you’ll never know when it will happen.” Wiltse stressed the importance of knowing basic emergency medical skills, saying she wished more people would

learn CPR and other maneuvers. She added that the course will benefit the community through increased emergency readiness and availability of people knowledgeable about CPR. Through 86 MDG’s monthly training program, Wiltse hopes the CPR skills she and her fellow instructors teach will spread throughout the squadrons. “Hopefully the participants will go back to their unit and

show an interest in teaching their members CPR,” she said. “The more people we have trained in CPR the better. This is such a useful skill to have, and you never know when you might need to use it. Few things are worse than needing medical assistance and not having anyone near you trained in giving it.” Those interested in this course or in gaining initial certification can call 479-2476 or 06371-46-2476.

721 AMXS: Taking care of Airmen, families takes care of the mission by Staff Sgt. Timothy Moore 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For the “Mission Movers” at the 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, the work can be tiring. As the busiest of the 521st Air Mobility Wing’s en route maintenance units, the Airmen often work hours upon hours to keep the mission moving. Working an extremely high tempo, the Airmen put in time, day after day, often missing holidays, family events and special occasions. Yet, looking at them, one might hardly notice as morale is high amongst Airmen and their families. It would seem the 721 AMXS is doing something right. Though that wasn’t always the case for everyone involved with the 721 AMXS. “When I first arrived, I sat in (temporary lodging) for a week and a half with two kids and two dogs,” said Aaron Sandrini, 721 AMXS spouse. “There was no one there to help support me and the kids.” The 721 AMXS leaders, hearing similar comments and anecdotes about difficult transitions to the unit and living overseas from spouses, took a good look at the programs they had to help spouses. “When I took command, an important focus area was taking care of the Airmen and their families,” said Maj. Scott Gilliland, 721 AMXS commander. “That meant creating programs that were crucial to the wellbeing of our AMXS family.” With the help and support of the unit’s leadership, the 721 AMXS key spouses implemented two key programs — the Spouse Sponsorship Program, benchmarked off of the 721st Aerial Port Squadron program, and monthly Newcomer’s Orientation and Dinner. With the sponsorship program, incoming spouses receive emails three to six months prior to their expected arrival and until they arrive at Ramstein with the intention to help answer any questions they may have. Once at Ramstein, both the military member and spouse receive a squadron orientation and invitation to a free meal to meet with leadership and key spouses. “The first impression is a lasting impression,” Gilliland said. “This is a way for new Airmen and spouses to get to know their leadership team in a relaxed setting and a perfect way for us to properly welcome them to the AMXS family.” On top of the Spouse Sponsorship Program and the monthly Newcomer’s Orientation and Dinner, the 721 AMXS leadership team also sup-

Spouses of the 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron attend a New Parent Support Group meeting. The New Parent Support Group is a program created by the 721 AMXS key spouses and leaders to help first-time parents with having and raising a child overseas, away from family. The group not only allows the children, under one year of age, to interact but also gives the parents a support system with people who are in similar situations as them.

ported the establishment of other programs such as quarterly Airmen Appreciation Dinners for the Mission Movers, live social media broadcasts and a monthly newsletter to help keep everyone informed, a spouse group to allow spouses the opportunity to interact and get involved with each other and the unit, Meals on Wheels and the New Parent Support Group. While the programs are backed by unit leadership, they are run by “the best key spouses and spouse group a commander could hope to have,” Gilliland said. “For me, the experience coming over here was very hard,” said Kendra Anthony, 721 AMXS key spouse. “I did not adjust well. It was a really tough year, and then Maj. Gilliland came here and interviewed me for key spouse. One of the things he asked me was what would I have done differently. I said, ‘I would have loved if someone had reached out to me.’” Many of the programs were formed

through similar processes — key spouses and others simply asking what they would have liked done for them. Through the programs, the 721 AMXS leaders and key spouses hope to make family members feel closer to the 721 AMXS family, allowing them to build closer relationships and support groups, not only giving them someone who can reach out to them but also giving them someone to whom they can reach out to during difficult times. When hard times do come around, the key spouses come around as well with other spouses through the Meals on Wheels and New Parent Support Group programs. If an Airman or family member is hospitalized for an extended period of time, the 721 AMXS spouse group comes together and supplies meals to help lessen the strain a long hospital stay can cause. puts new moms and dads together once a month to get to know each other and gain useful information from each other about having kids overseas. “We had our first child out here,” said Senior Airman Steven Stanfa, 721 AMXS hydraulic technician. “It was a bit of a struggle for us, being our first child. It wasn’t planned to be out here, but thanks to all of the key spouses, who already had kids, because they were a super big help to my wife.” Because of the help Stanfa and his wife, Jazmin, received with their child through the New Parent Support Group program, she became more involved with other spouse programs. “The biggest thing I’ve noticed is that when we first got here, she was stuck in the room all day,” Stanfa said about his wife. “She didn’t really have much to do or people to talk to. … She was kind of stuck by herself not doing anything. With the new (programs), (the key spouses) actually reached out, and (my wife) has a connection with all of them now. … Seeing her involved really affects me positively because I know she’s not alone. I know she’s got everyone else here with her.” Thus, Stanfa gets to focus more on keeping the mission moving, and there is less of a chance spouses will have bad experiences when transitioning to a unit with not only a high work tempo but also high morale. “What makes a unit great is the ability to take care of the Airmen and their families,” Gilliland said. “At the end of the day, leadership can come up with amazing programs, but it takes dedicated individuals to make these programs flourish. At the 721 AMXS, we have some of the best spouses who have a heart to serve. Without the combined effort of each and every one of our spouses, none of this would be possible.”

435 CRG trains for contingency down range Story and photos by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The mission of the 435th Contingency Response Group is to open up bare bases and air fields in austere environments. During base-opening operations, they may face a variety of threats. In the past, those who needed training to counter these threats needed to travel stateside to attend contingency response courses. The 435 CRG created Contingency Response Top-Off to replace stateside requirements and provide all necessary training locally in three days, saving thousands of dollars and hundreds of man hours and building a better bond between trainers and students. Tech. Sgt. Joshua Sams, 435th Security Forces Squadron section chief for flyaway security and the combatives program, was one of the instructors during a recent CR Top-Off class. “Training here is more effective than sending them back to the States,” Sams said. “Not only are we saving time, energy and effort by training them locally, but they’re getting trained by the same security forces members who deploy with them. We’re enhancing our relationships, camaraderie and capabilities by working with one another.” Sams said that the CR Top-Off training is a three-and-a-half-day course teaching integrated defense, force protection, and tactical casualty care. Integrated defense encompasses all the 435 SFS operations and training that are involved in defending a base, while force protection describes the preventative measures taken to mitigate hostile actions against base personnel, resources and information. Tactical casualty care involves caring for wound victims in combat situations. Participants spent time in classrooms receiving knowledge on topics such as use of force, entry control point operations, and tactical movements and

formations. On field day the participants suited up in helmets and body armor, loaded blank ammunition into their weapons and headed out to the woods on Rhine Ordnance Barracks to do hands-on exercises such as checking vehicles for simulated explosives, detecting improvised explosive devices, and treating and caring for an injury victim under fire. “The training has absolutely been effective,” said Master Sgt. William Crismon, 435th Contingency Response Squadron first sergeant and one of the course participants. “The instructors here are definitely on point, very professional and proficient in everything that they’re doing.” As the participants treated simulated victims, checked beneath vehicles and defended their positions under simulated fire, instructors stood by to critique and give guidance. “The most important part is that these members get this training, which is going to make them qualified to continue to deploy down range and continue operating the mission of the 435 CRG successfully,” Sams said. “Without this training they don’t have the most up-to-date tactics and techniques for what they need to do when they get to the austere environments.” The 435 CRG is currently in the process of training 60 personnel with CR Top-Off and calculates that they will save approximately $210,000 and more than 10,000 man hours by training them locally. “The most rewarding part has been seeing everybody operate together,” Crismon said. “Watching the experience and expertise from the cadre and watching the team grow.” They intend to continue to giving their Airmen the best possible training, allowing the Airmen to continue their mission with the knowledge and experience they need to keep themselves and their country safe.

86 AW Command Post reacts quickly

wings and 39 geographically separated units across Europe. While some units work a regular schedule and close for the weekends, command post never shuts down. “We are a necessary part of the machine,” said Tech. Sgt. Melvyn Thompson, 86 AW Command Post senior controller. “We are the engine that drives Ramstein. Without us, commanders cannot make informed decisions to do their job. Without us, we can’t make notifications for incidents.” Thompson added that command post Airmen are considered mission-essential personnel, which means they report for duty on time even in less-than-ideal conditions. Additionally, they may also be called in to work during their off times. Airman 1st Class Jackson Dollar, 86 AW Command Post junior controller, added that command post Airmen must always be alert, saying one can never know how any shift will go. “Sometimes at night, you’ve got a lot of stuff going on that can come up randomly out of the blue,” he said. “It’s really unpredictable, but overall I say it’s a good experience because I get to talk to high-up leadership and all that kind of stuff.” Dollar expressed his pride in his job, adding that he acknowledges the importance of his mission even as a junior enlisted Airman. “I kind of look at (it) like we’re the eyes and ears of the base, and without us, we’re walking blind,” he said. “What I feel gets me up in the morning is how important our job is. I feel like the job is super important, and it’s an honor to do such important tasks as an Airman first class.”

CS adds the new computers to their inventory tracking system, then moves them to standard desktop configuration to be reimaged. “We are taking that equipment and putting it on the network, making sure it has all the security updates to remove vulnerabilities and bring it up to compliance,” Kosakowski said. Out with the old and in with the new, the 86 CS gives unit customers 30 days to bring in their old computers to ensure they are no longer connected to the network, as they are not compliant with new security standards and become vulnerable to viruses. For customers who have compatible computers, the 86 CS will execute a network patch that will go out electronically once the first phase is complete. “It’s the customer’s responsibility to frequently back up their computers,” Kosakowski said. “This is especially critical for the protection of

any compatibility issues. Supporting the Kaiserslautern Military Community and deployment of Windows 10 to surrounding bases, Ramstein leads the charge in USAFE towards a more secure operating system and standardization across the board.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Every day, thousands of people come in and out of Ramstein going about their business and accomplishing a host of missions. Ramstein is part of the Kaiserslautern Military Community, which is the largest community of Americans outside the United States. The installation itself is a major hub for operations throughout Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia. For a base of such magnitude, keeping track of what’s happening in the community can be a daunting challenge. Airmen assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing Command Post tackle this challenge every day. The command post is responsible for sending emergency notifications to units, managing the emergency mass notification system, and providing command and control support to operations coming in and out of Ramstein. “For most of our incidents here, we use quick-reaction checklists to respond,” said Master Sgt. Katrina Strother, 86 AW Command Post noncommissioned officer in charge of command post operations. “It gives us a detailed plan on how to take the information and who to notify of it. We give the commander the information he needs to make informed strategic decisions for the installation and for the local population.” The 86 AW Command Post provides the largest command and control service for U.S. Air Forces in Europe. The unit also supports four Standardization, from Page 1

The 86 CS is capable of imaging 50 personal computers per day and has distributed approximately 250 each week since they started in May. “We are taking a phased approach,” said Tech. Sgt. Ross Kosakowski, 86 CS systems acquisitions noncommissioned officer in charge. “We have machines that are capable of taking the new operating system remotely, but the first phase is taking care of the computers that aren’t compatible with it.” To replace computers that can’t support the new software, USAFE purchased more than 3,000 computers, with the 86 CS expecting approximately 7,500 more to complete the mission. New general takes command of 7 MSC by Lt. Col. Jefferson Wolfe 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs The 7th Mission Support Command hosted its second change of command in about a year as Brig. Gen. Steven Ainsworth turned command over to Brig. Gen. Frederick R. Maiocco Jr. during a Friday morning ceremony on NCO Field on Daenner Kaserne. Maiocco comes to the 7 MSC, the U.S. Army Reserve’s only forward-stationed command in Europe, from the 85th Support Command in Arlington Heights, Illinois, where he relinquished command July 9. “I am deeply humbled and honored to stand before you today,” he said during the ceremony. The 7 MSC Soldiers are an “impressive group,” he said, not only during the ceremony on the parade field but across the continent of Europe. Maj. Gen. Steven Shapiro, commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, presided over the ceremony. The 21 TSC is the 7 MSC’s higher headquarters, and the 7 MSC’s commanding general will be dual-hatted as the deputy commanding general for the 21 TSC. “The effect of the 7 MSC is felt widely throughout the European theater and the Army,” Shapiro said. He welcomed Maiocco, saying he had spoken to his previous chain of command, and they had nothing but good things to say about his leadership. “You and the team at the 7 MSC will bring it to the next level,” he said. Ainsworth, who took command effective Aug. 8, 2016, leaves the 7 MSC after almost a year. He has been selected for promotion to major general and will take command of the Army Reserve’s 377th Theater Sustainment Command in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. “The unit’s done a lot in the last year,” Ainsworth said. The 7 MSC has reconfigured the staff, developed a new mission statement, taken part in exercises and realworld missions all over Europe in the past year, and is looking forward to adding about 300 Soldiers in five new units during the next year. “These great achievements are not about me,” he said. “I stated that when I took command. Command is not about the commander, it is about the command, the unit.” He said it has been an honor to serve in the 7 MSC. “We have done some phenomenal things, but today I feel the future is even brighter,” he added. “Brig. Gen. Maiocco will take the unit further.”

Airmen in developmental special duties epitomize leadership, core values by Kat Bailey Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas — Air Force officials filled 770 positions across nine developmental special duties, or DSDs, for spring 2017. The DSD nomination process occurs twice each year and is designed to fill specific special duties the Air Force has acknowledged as developmental due to their unique requirements. Commanders are encouraged to nominate any Airman in the rank of staff, technical and master sergeant they feel is the right fit for these critical duties. Nominees must have a demonstrated record of exceptional performance and a high capacity to lead. “Airmen selected for DSD have high potential and are filling some of the Air Force’s most critical positions,” said Master Sgt. Danielle Hamilton, special duty and DSD assignments manager at the Air Force’s Personnel Center. “They must be an ambassador and role model for the Air Force core values of integrity, service and excellence.” The nine developmental special duties are career assistance advisor, military training instructor, military training leader, Air Force Academy military training instructor, Airman and Family Readiness Center noncommissioned officer, first sergeant, Air Force Honor Guard NCO, recruiter and Professional Military Education instructor. “The more opportunities Airmen have to broaden their skill sets, the more capabilities they bring to the fight,” Hamilton said. “We are systematically preparing those Airmen with high potential to assume their place as tomorrow’s leaders.” In June, Air Education and Training Command

made three substantial changes to the DSD process to improve the ability to fill these positions by adding more flexibility and increasing opportunities for noncommissioned officers. “The changes included opening military training instructor opportunities to staff sergeants, using the Enlisted Quarterly Assignment Listing-Plus website to advertise technical training instructor positions for three-level awarding schoolhouses and aligning the physical training score for all DSD and TTI positions to the Air Force standard of 75 points versus the former DSD standard of 80,” Hamilton said. Assignment opportunities for TTI positions shifted to EQUAL-Plus advertisements June 26. Airmen who were selected for TTI roles received assignment notifications via the normal channels. Airmen who were selected for DSD have received an assignment or were contacted by the appropriate assignment authority for further instructions. Airmen who were nominated for a developmental duty, but not selected, remain eligible for selection until the end of each DSD cycle in the event of future openings. Airmen who were not nominated for DSD but are still interested in career-developing opportunities can go to the Enlisted Quarterly Assignment Listing-Plus website as well as review the special duty catalog. The list of Airmen who have received DSD assignments is available on myPers under Special Duty Assignment Programs on the Active Duty: Enlisted Assignments Home Page or select “Active Duty Enlisted” from the dropdown menu and search “DSD.” For more information about Air Force personnel programs, go to myPers.

Air Force to radically reduce instructions Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs WASHINGTON — Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson announced the Air Force will seek to significantly reduce unnecessary Air Force instructions over the next 24 months in order to allow greater flexibility and mission focus. Empower exceptional leaders, enable the warfighter In a room full of new Air Force fellows at the National Defense University, Wilson said the 1,300 official instructions are often outdated and inconsistent, breeding cynicism when Airmen feel they cannot possibly follow every written rule. “There are more AFIs than we need,” she said. “Let’s not tell Airmen how to do everything. Let’s tell them what to do and let them surprise us with their ingenuity.” “Secretary Wilson and I trust our Airmen will make the right decision, based on the values, training and experience the Air Force has provided them,” said Gen. David L. Goldfein, Air Force Chief of Staff. “By reducing the number of Air Force directives we are trusting our Airmen and pushing down decision authority to commanders.”

The way ahead — restore readiness The effort will start with the 40 percent of instructions that are out of date and those identified by Airmen as top priorities. “The first step will target immediate rescission,” Wilson said. “We want to significantly reduce the number of publications, and make sure the remaining ones are current and relevant.” Airmen can visit the Airmen Powered by Innovation portal to provide input on which publications should be prioritized for review. The second phase will be a review of all other directive publications issued by Headquarters Air Force. These publications contain more than 130,000 compliance items at the wing level. Publications should add value, set policy and describe best practices, she said. They should also give authority to the lowest practical level to waive instructions when experience and good judgement suggest that is the best course. Airmen will have the opportunity to be part of an Air Force survey within the next several weeks. The survey will ask for feedback on the most important instructions to rescind or revise.

LRMC, Army clinics in Europe open USAREUR training holidays by Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and LRMC clinics throughout Europe are open during U.S. Army Europe training holidays to help service members keep up on their medical and dental readiness needs. All Army health and dental facilities in Kaiserslautern, Baumholder, Wiesbaden, Brussels, SHAPE and Vicenza will be open for appointments for Soldiers and family members during training holidays but will be closed during federal holidays. “Everyone is busy during the normal duty day, but training holidays are great opportunities to catch up on annual exams and ensure you’re ready to deploy if called upon,” said LRMC Commander Col. Timothy Hudson. Every Soldier is personally responsible for their medical and dental readiness, which you can easily check through your Army Knowledge Online account under the My Medical section. If they are anything other than green,

they need to be seen. Being medically ready is critical for a deployable Soldier, as Soldiers must be ready to fight and win today’s wars as part of globally integrated operations. All Soldiers are assigned a Medical Readiness Classification MRC of one to four. The class of MRC four consists of Soldiers whose medical and dental status is unknown. These Soldiers are therefore nondeployable. Many Soldiers marked MRC four are simply overdue for an annual dental exam or physical health assessment, both of which can now be completed during a USAREUR training holiday. Soldiers and all eligible beneficiaries, military family members, retirees and their families, and federal employees, can take advantage of appointments during USAREUR training holidays. To schedule an appointment, simply call your clinic’s appointment line during regular business hours or go online at your convenience, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to www.TRICAREonline. com to choose from many open appointments in your primary care clinic.

Kirchheimbolanden sponsors 3-day summer fest by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Kirchheimbolanden will celebrate its 67th annual “Residenzfest,” “residence fest,” under the motto “Three summer days in the little residence” from Saturday to Monday. The summer fest will feature live music, dance performances, culinary specialties and regional wines in backyards and along medieval walls, gates and towers. Kirchheimbolanden is called “the little residence” because it was the residence of the princes of NassauWeilburg for about 400 years. In 1368, it received town rights, and that’s when the town wall with town gates and towers were built. The palace, palace garden, ball house, orangery, court

church and Baroque houses were built in the 18th century. These buildings reflect the character of the town. The summer fest weekend actually will begin today with the city’s culture night, “Kulturnacht.” There will be art displays, lectures and musical performances. “Cyber Lights,” an LED show with dancing, art and juggling will close out activities at 10:45 p.m. in front of Paulskirche. To find out about all Kulturnacht happenings, visit www.kirchheimbolanden.de/_files/kulturnacht.pdf. The mayor of Kirchheimbolanden, Klaus Hartmueller, and the wine and beer majesties will officially open Residenzfest at 5 p.m. Saturday on Roemerplatz. You can choose to head feet first into the chilly, brisk, knee-high river while clutching two ropes for balance or you can simply walk a bit further and go across the bridge. To get back across the river, you can inch single file across a rope bridge suspended above the water, or choose to take a small ferry. We opted for the suspension bridge. The path ends at a snack bar overlooking a playground. There is also a playground just before the suspension bridge. It took us about an hour to walk the entire path. There was a lot of conversation and laughter during this time. I honestly cannot recall the last time I went barefoot in public on a random Wednesday. Once I overcame the mud and dirt caked between my toes and up to my knees, I immensely enjoyed this adventure! Story and photos by Cheryl Koller The secret to feeling young might be as simple as walking barefoot outdoors. Sometimes I just enjoy being silly with my grown daughters. Today was such a day. We shed our shoes to traverse Bad Sobernheim’s barefoot path- known as BarfussPfad in German. Knee-Deep in Mud When we first removed our shoes and I realized that we would be beginning the 3.5 kilometer walk with a 15yard stretch of knee-deep mud (called a clay pool), it took a lot of effort for the “mommy” in me to stop worrying about what might be lurking underneath that mud. I mean, come on, had I not raised these girls to stay OUT of the mud? Not only am I now permitting it, I am encouraging it. It was cold and mucky (a word we use in the South) and solicited squeals and giggles. The girls thought it was fun too.

Liberating Fun Turns out that ignoring said initial mommy instinct and strolling shoeless is quite liberating and loads of fun. My oldest daughter educated me on this walk that it is also “grounding.” There is a lot to be said about the health benefits of this particular type of exercise. Even the brochures promote this walk as nature’s way of treating yourself to a foot reflexology massage. And, yes, there is a foot wash that you can use when you return to get your shoes. The Path The path is a flat loop and is quite easy for the most part. One side offers wide-open, ever-changing scenery through a great big meadow bordered by a hiking and biking trail. On the barefoot side, the terrain is mostly hard-packed dirt, mulch and grass. Scattered throughout are several stations of pine cones, tree bark, river stones, wine bottle corks, volcanic rock, sandstone and brick. For those

More Information Visit www.bad-soberheim.de for additional information. The park is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily between May 1 and Oct. 3 but will close in the event of inclement weather. The cost is 3.50 euro (for adults), 2 euro for children (ages 3-17) and free children under the age of 3. Additionally, furry children (aka dogs) are NOT allowed in this park. How to Get There Bad Sobernheim is northwest of Kaiserslautern, about 62 miles or an hour’s drive. Once in Bad Sobernheim, head into the main part of town and follow the signs for Barfusspfad. Parking near the venue is free. Author’s Profile: Cheryl Koller is a native of Georgia. She is a DOD spouse, mom of 4 daughters (2 adults, 2 teens), thrill-seeker, avid traveler, and lover of food and wine. She is a self-proclaimed Freedom-Preneur and Blogger currently living in Ramstein with her family.
